Image and quote taken from a February 1946 Counter-Intelligence Corps interview of Dr. Von Hyden after his capture by US Army personnel in conjunction with Operation Paperclip while he was in Tokyo in September 1945.

Dr. Samuel Von Hyden was notorious for having been a German medical attache to the Japanese Kwangtung Army starting in July 1940. Dr. Von Hyden's position as attache was cover for his assignment as a research liason between the SS and the Japanese biological warfare department; Unit 731.

During Von Hyden's time working alongside Surgeon-General Shirō Ishii, director of Unit 731 in Harbin, it has been attested that Dr. Von Hyden is personally responsible for over 2,700 deaths ordered on his behalf in pursuit of sadistic research. In exchange for complete disclosure of his knowledge of Unit 731 activies from 1940-1945, Dr. Von Hyden was granted immunity by the Truman Adminstration.

Dr. Samuel Von Hyden died in his home in Frederick, Maryland on October 2nd, 1978 aged 71 of heart failure. It is suspected he was employed for much of his post-war career at the the US Army Biological Warfare Laboratories at the nearby Camp Detrick, which ceased biological warfare research in 1969.
