Fun Fact Friday

This isn't a mind blowing thing, but I like to slip stupid little references into my writing that I might be the only one who ever gets it.

For example: In Signs of Light and Shadow Book One, the MCs encounter a mermaid named Marina. She offhandedly describes a favourite meal from when she was human.

"I miss this one dish our neighbours used to make. A flat baked dough, topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and meats. Spices in the sauce, then it was cooked till crispy. Never learned what it was called. After years of nothing but fish, I would do anything to eat it again."

Now, if anyone can guess what I'm trying to reference here, then you get a cookie. Answer is below the break, but the tags for this post might also be a clue.

Ok.

It's a rather stupid reference to the Ninja Sex Party song Courtship of the Mermaid, wherein the singer tries to woo a mermaid using pizza. Marina is describing pizza.

The song came out some time after I'd written the chapters with Marina, but I felt compelled to go back and put in the reference.

#Ohaguro was a practice in #ancient #Japan 🏯👘 where #women would blacken their #teeth as a sign of #beauty and marital status. It was popular among #aristocratic women during the #Heian period (794-1185 AD) and continued into the #Edo period (1603-1868 AD).

The blackening 🖤🦷 process involved applying a special toothpaste made of vinegar and iron filings to the teeth.

Oh shit it's Fun Fact Friday with Moondust~!

Today's fun fact is that my second job was working at Hyvee in the Produce section! I made some good friends at that job, but most of what I enjoyed was the quiet time in the back where I didn't have to talk to people and could focus on the cleaning that I enjoyed. I recently heard Owl City's song about the fact that one of his first jobs was at Hyvee, so it's cool to think that we have something in common!
