delighted though i am for ghost's growing success i'm keeping my fingers crossed for an obviously low-budget ghovie like the chapters before it. because the papa nihil darth vader breathing and seestor's car crash montage and the shitty nihil ghost effects and copia living in the hall outside a bathroom with no door etc all add a certain je ne sais quoi

just tweeted this but like. if you told past lucie, even lucie from last year, that they'd get obsessed with a pop band, they wouldn't believe you. but here we are 🕺

What have I done?!? 🥁🎸🎹 This is so, so cool! You wrote the audition like i mini-fic 🤩 Drabble? I don’t know, it was very cool, thank you 👏🏼 And Mary’s comment when she was adjusting the chair, hahaha. Loved the idea with neon colors, what a cool concept 🎨 Who’s the singer of this band? And how would Ava know of their music? Has she seen them live, or is their music out? Maybe it could be combined with your earlier thoughts? That Ava worked in a bar they played, and that’s how she found out about them (and Bea). Does the band have a name? And/or will it change/develop when Ava joins? Thank for taking my questions seriously, this is so much fun 😘
anon oh no, oh no now we're getting into the details aren't we. i'm torn between the band being primarily instrumental (akin to Polyphia) and having guest vocalists every now and then, vs having some hella strong vocalist - i'm thinking like Fuki from Doll$Boxx or omg what if someone like Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer?!? yoooo that would be intense. if the latter, then Lilith would be a terrifying analogue oh geez.
okay yknow what, i'm leaning towards instrumental first with guest vocals because i kinda like the idea of them working with different vocalists occasionally, which would be kinda like canon what with how their "front man" / halo bearer changes. but also like, that puts more pressure on each instrument to be on their game (which Beatrice impresses upon Ava when they have their two-day bootcamp).
as for how Ava first heard of them (aside: anon I am the absolute worst at naming things, their band's name is just going to be "the band" for the forseeable future lolol) maybe she happened upon their music online or heard about them somehow - someone playing a cover, someone mentioning them in passing, or maybe someone watching a video on their phone and Ava happens to see - oh that would be amusing if it was JC, yeah, lol okay, maybe JC's also a musician and someone sent him a video of their band but he's not really paying attention to it because it's not his vibe but Ava is enthralled. she goes home, looks up all their stuff, immediately starts playing along and it's difficult and brilliant and it pushes her to the limits of her skill level but she still has the utmost fun and it pushes her to keep learning. she becomes a fan but while she's eaten up every video and interview she could find about them (perhaps she happened upon one of those explainer videos that Beatrice did lol) she hasn't had the chance to see them live because they'd been on hiatus - hence why Beatrice (and Mary though she tries not to show it) are stressed about the upcoming gig, because while it's a small one, it is important to them since it's their first one in a long time.
oh and maybe also they're debuting new music for the first time in a long time at that gig - and maybe, after Ava's proven herself to Mary, they work through the song with Ava and Ava is able to play it perfectly, but then maybe during a break or something she's playing along to the track - not exactly practicing but like casually playing like she does at home alone whenever she listens to their songs, adding stuff here and there - and maybe Mary and Beatrice come back from break early and hear her and Beatrice looks at Mary and is like, "I'll make sure she keeps to what we've written" but Mary forestalls her, steps into the room fully, which catches Ava's attention, who abruptly stops playing and somehow manages to stop the track too without falling over.
"hey boss," Ava says, twirling the drumsticks between her fingers nervously. "that was a uh quick walk."
Mary's face is unreadable still, and she rewinds the track a bit. "do that fill again."
Ava blinks and Mary gives her a look that's like, 'do not make me repeat myself' and Ava scrambles to remember what she did and fumbles.
Mary shakes her head. "no, you did it differently last time." she kinda beatboxes what she remembers and Ava's like, "oh yeah" and repeats it correctly this time and Mary's taking up her bass and is muttering to herself about voicing things differently to match and Beatrice is like, "you want to change it? the performance is the day after tomorrow" and Ava's like, "hey I was just messing around" but Mary looks Ava straight in the eye and says, "it's a good idea. let's use it." then she looks at Beatrice and raises an eyebrow. "two days is more than enough time, right?"
and Beatrice kinda helplessly laughs because of course Mary would get caught up in this, in this energy Ava's brought with her - it's the renewal they've needed; Ava's exactly what they've been looking for.

Serious question for my music friends
I often hear people talk about how confusing the timing is in a bunch of Radiohead songs, which I would agree with for like Pyramid Song (though IMO a big part of that is Thom playing a little rubato) but I hear it said a lot for Videotape.
Now it seems like the studio version is just piano on the ones, with the drums coming in on the "and" after four and the first beat, There's supposed to be a live version that is shows that there's a "secret syncopation" but it sounded the same to me just with the drum playing kick in the 2 and snare on the 1 (and I am not of the belief that even if the timing was different live it would mean anything to the studio arrangement)
Are people counting the kick as the 1 when the drums come in?
What exactly am I missing here?
Is it the swing? The triplet feel in the vocal melody? The fact the piano is a little early on that live version (to my ears it sounds like it's meant to be the 1's and is just a touch rushed, the entire live version is a little rough timing wise not that I would do any better with that arrangement for the first time lol don't get me wrong they sound amazing and all)
Am I wrong or is everyone else?

Infinite list of favourite lyrics: 228/?
Rainbow - Since You Been Gone (1979)
"So in the night I stand,
Beneath the backstreet light,
I read the words that you sent to me.
I could take the afternoon
But nighttime comes around too soon -
You can't know what you mean to me.
Your poison letter,
Your telegram,
Just goes to show you don't give a damn!"
#favourite lyrics#rainbow#since you been gone#1979#russ ballard#down to earth#I'm not sure how many people realise that Since You Been Gone (and it is You‚ not You've‚ despite the intriguing typo on the single sleeve#i used for an image) the song which gave Rainbow their first hit single‚ became a rock anthem and forever associated with the band‚ is#actually a cover version. Russ Ballard‚ in the aftermath of leaving Argent‚ had reinvented himself as a solo artist and wrote the song for#his 1976 album Winning. his version is good‚ but can come as a bit of a surprise: it's... a little goofy tbh. punctuated by strange#electronic boops and bleeps‚ it's a chipper‚ strangely upbeat delivery. Ballard was a celebrated songwriter already in his own time‚ and#his songs commonly covered; several artists beat Rainbow to this song‚ actually‚ with US rockers Head East perhaps the first to give it a#slightly heavier sound. but it was Rainbow who stripped the song down and built it back up from scratch‚ retooling a piano heavy oddity#into a hard rock tragic masterpiece. there's some subtle changes in their arrangement (the scansion in the quoted lines is markedly#different across Rainbow and Ballard's versions) but the chief ingredient that made Rainbow's version a radio mainstay and a huge#commercial success (and the beginnings of a more commercially viable sound for the band) has to be the lead vocals by Graham Bonnet#actually Down to Earth was Bonnet's sole album with Rainbow‚ replacing Ronnie James Dio who'd departed after disagreements with band#founder Ritchie Blackmore. the band had something of a rotating membership from the beginning‚ and Bonnet soon moved on to form his#own metal band‚ Alcatrazz. his delivery on this song‚ though‚ is incredible: a full throated‚ roaring‚ soul baring triumph#that couldn't be further from Ballard's vaguely cheery sing song. backed by a wall of guitar and drums‚ it's a completely different song#a complete stylistic reinvention into a blaring‚ stomping‚ iconic entry in the 70s hard rock canon

one of the things about where are your boys tonight i really appreciated and, to me, seemed like the most significant thrust of the book (but never garnered much attention, imo), was the focus on the business side of things and particularly the way the many bands never saw long term success or stability or the way a lot of very young people were taken advantage of even after making their labels and handlers metric butt-tones of money and this really culminated with the discussion about paramores record deal and the inherently coercive nature of making a 14 year old sign a record deal (not even really mentioning that record deal was 20 fucking years lmao) and yet i still see people argue she was an industry plant or whatever. sorry ig one of my fatal flaws is i give child stars the benefit of the doubt considering the fundamental exploitation necessary for that position to exist or whatever
#sorry was thinking about this bc I saw some truly horrible and dismissive posts on twitter about hayleys contract#but i also think it dovetails into the general malaise that existed in the third wave that a lot of places are quick to dismiss#idk. i keep thinking about how so many ppl were taken advantage of (in the sense of predatory contracts or not getting paid victory style)#and how many are stuck in an endless loop of diminishing returns in order to be career musicians who can actually support themselves#and fundamentally this is the key linchpin in the emo nostalgia- some of the btier andlower bands Need stuff like#emo nites or wwwy to actually make a living (no matter how much you make up front a altrock hit single cannot sustain someone as livelihood)#and since touring is the only reliable way to make money. well why put significant expenses into ur new album#none of your fans care about anyway? its a pre-existing cycle. very thrash metal. but its almost worse#when you factor in shit like the fan perception of the used the canyon....#idk ive been thinking about it a lot and i dont find nostalgia circuits reprehensible bc of the fundamental indignities#of the recording industry and all its issues#but its hard to see people shit talk the third wave for being full of impressionable kids hoping to survive of their passion#like you do realize they dont sound like assholes in that circumstance for crashing and burning? right?#(esp when you add mental health and addiction into the mix- these bands were full of sick people being denied care bc it would interfere w/#the 'rawness' or authenticity or whatever the fuck. these bands were having their sadness wrung out of them for money)#anyway i think hayley williams should be allowed to hunt any and all current or former atlantic higherups for sport#my posts
