#commercial success (and the beginnings of a more commercially viable sound for the band) has to be the lead vocals by Graham Bonnet

Infinite list of favourite lyrics: 228/?
Rainbow - Since You Been Gone (1979)
"So in the night I stand,
Beneath the backstreet light,
I read the words that you sent to me.
I could take the afternoon
But nighttime comes around too soon -
You can't know what you mean to me.
Your poison letter,
Your telegram,
Just goes to show you don't give a damn!"
#favourite lyrics#rainbow#since you been gone#1979#russ ballard#down to earth#I'm not sure how many people realise that Since You Been Gone (and it is You‚ not You've‚ despite the intriguing typo on the single sleeve#i used for an image) the song which gave Rainbow their first hit single‚ became a rock anthem and forever associated with the band‚ is#actually a cover version. Russ Ballard‚ in the aftermath of leaving Argent‚ had reinvented himself as a solo artist and wrote the song for#his 1976 album Winning. his version is good‚ but can come as a bit of a surprise: it's... a little goofy tbh. punctuated by strange#electronic boops and bleeps‚ it's a chipper‚ strangely upbeat delivery. Ballard was a celebrated songwriter already in his own time‚ and#his songs commonly covered; several artists beat Rainbow to this song‚ actually‚ with US rockers Head East perhaps the first to give it a#slightly heavier sound. but it was Rainbow who stripped the song down and built it back up from scratch‚ retooling a piano heavy oddity#into a hard rock tragic masterpiece. there's some subtle changes in their arrangement (the scansion in the quoted lines is markedly#different across Rainbow and Ballard's versions) but the chief ingredient that made Rainbow's version a radio mainstay and a huge#commercial success (and the beginnings of a more commercially viable sound for the band) has to be the lead vocals by Graham Bonnet#actually Down to Earth was Bonnet's sole album with Rainbow‚ replacing Ronnie James Dio who'd departed after disagreements with band#founder Ritchie Blackmore. the band had something of a rotating membership from the beginning‚ and Bonnet soon moved on to form his#own metal band‚ Alcatrazz. his delivery on this song‚ though‚ is incredible: a full throated‚ roaring‚ soul baring triumph#that couldn't be further from Ballard's vaguely cheery sing song. backed by a wall of guitar and drums‚ it's a completely different song#a complete stylistic reinvention into a blaring‚ stomping‚ iconic entry in the 70s hard rock canon

Rock en español is a topic I’m pretty passionate about, and also something that I feel like has not received a lot of attention in the anglophone world. There is a lot of complexity to this topic--easily enough to fill an entire book. However, I’m going to try to break down the basics for anyone looking to get their feet wet with some new Spanish-language music, as well as try to provide a bit of historical context.
Since there is no way I can cover everything in one post, there will be a certain amount of bias towards music I personally think is significant--but I will try to cover music that is typically considered universally known or important. We’re starting with Argentina, because of their massive influence on the genre in general.
1. La Balsa, Los Gatos (1967). A “balsa” is a raft, and the theme of this song is, essentially, a generation “shipwrecking” itself. This is the song credited with really starting Argentina’s rock nacional, selling 250,000 copies, inspiring the name for a band (”Los Náufragos”), and becoming an iconic reflection of the youth counterculture of the time. What’s important to understand about this song is that this is the era of the Vietnam War, of Cold War tensions, and of a desire to break with tradition, particularly in regards to sexual relationships & gender roles. Under Juan Carlos Onganía (president 1966-1970), long hair in men and “immodest” clothing for women was particularly targeted (you can read more about that here). The original lyrics started off with “estoy muy solo triste acá en este mundo de mierda” but were later replaced with “estoy muy solo triste acá en este mundo abandonado” [2]. Musically, their first album has a very Beach-Boys vibe to me, but more melancholy.
*For a song that speaks pretty openly about the feelings of this time period, try listening to Rebelde (1966) by Los Beatniks.
The next biggest players to show up in the 1960s and ‘70s are “El Flaco” Louis Alberto Spinetta (1950-2012), and Charly García (1951-Present).
2. Muchacha (ojos de papel), Almendra (1969) & Bajan, Pescado Rabioso (1973) are the songs I am choosing to highlight. Spinetta has had quite a few bands over the years, but to me his most impactful projects were the album Almendra I and Artaud. Spinetta is known for his very poetic songs, and sort of spiritual, otherworldly sound. Artaud in particular is very surreal, psychedelic, Pink Floyd-esque. This was the era of Operation Condor and a lot of senseless violence and social change, and many feel that Spinetta’s nod to the writer Antonin Artaud (and his “theater of cruelty”) is a sort of reflection of the Zeitgeist of the time. It does not feel to me like an overtly political album, but more introspective and melancholy. Regardless, both are considered classics. Personally I’m particularly fond of the song  Que el Viento Borró tus Manos.
3. Charly GarcĂa - GarcĂa is credited for nearly 50 albums so far in his career, and so summarizing his impact is a bit of a challenge! Starting off with his involvement in the band Sui Generis (Latin: “of its own kind” i.e., unique) during the years 1969-1975, I want to mention the songs Botas Locas and CanciĂłn para mi muerte, which describe his experience in the army after being drafted. GarcĂa more or less faked insanity and health problems to get kicked out of the military, as he considered the service unethical (and has been known for his somewhat erratic behavior his entire life) [3]. Some of his songs were censored, and he later became known for writing subversive songs that could escape censorship, famously Los Dinosaurios--the implication here being that certain politicians were “dinosaurs” who would one day disappear. During his SerĂș GirĂĄn era (1978-1982), he wrote some really interesting songs like JosĂ© Mercado, which speaks directly to the increase in consumer goods available in the ‘80s, and one of my favorite songs, Viernes, 3am, which is a beautiful, haunting song about suicide. During his career as a soloist, his style has varied tremendously, but I would be remiss to not mention the album Clics Modernos (1983), which is where I feel like people should start when getting into this tremendously influential artist.
*Pappo and Manal are also extremely influential during this time.
What happens in the 1980s is a complete explosion of rock en español and the first time it is really shown to be commercially viable and exportable on a large scale. And a lot of that is due to the influence of Soda Stereo.
4. Soda Stereo & Gustavo Cerati. I need to explain that even despite the success and influence of bands in the ‘60s and ‘70s, that rock music in Spanish was still somewhat seen as of “lesser quality” than the British Invasion bands, and that many Latin Americans listened to music in English, regardless of whether or not they understood the lyrics. However, something happened in 1982: Argentina went to war with the United Kingdom (Falklands War). During this time, English language music was actually banned from being played on the radio, and for the first time, Spanish-language bands got enough airtime to really compete and gain a following [5]. In 1983, Argentina elected RaĂșl AlfonsĂn, effectively ending the military dictatorship. Soda actually released their first album in 1984, capitalizing on and quickly dominating this emerging market for Spanish-language rock. Soda is remembered for more of a pop-rock sound and for creating great hooks, as well as for creating a massive fan base--take a look at this version of Nada Personal from 1987 and the size of the crowd--this is a real turning point for rock en español. These bands spread to the rest of Latin America and inspired the conception of many more.
Soda had 7 studio albums and numerous hits. The songs everyone knows are Persiana Americana, De MĂșsica Ligera, Nada Personal, and En la Ciudad de la Furia. Many people remember them for their danceable rhythms and frivolous lyrics, but I think that’s oversimplifying them a bit too much. They are typically seen as apolitical but they are not entirely--their first album features a fun song, DiatĂ©tico, which is ostensibly about dieting--and contains the shouts El regimen se acabĂł! Se acabĂł! -- a clever pun on the Spanish word for diet (regimen) and (military) regime. What Soda does in their first albums is essentially “celebrate” this newfound freedom with feel-good, romantic, “fun” music, which in a way was inaccessible during the dictatorship, and a sharp contrast to the more melancholy music of the ‘60s and 70s. However some of their later albums have very different feels, and Dynamo (1992) in particular still stands out to me as a very progressive, unique album.
Cerati went on to produce five solo albums before his death in 2014, the most essential of which is undoubtedly Bocanada (1999). This is a beautiful, complex album that (in my mind, anyway) has no rivals. And I am not the only one who thinks so [6]!
In the 1990s and 2000s, rock en español in Argentina (and everywhere else) begins to multiply and take on a number of sub-genres (punk, alternative, indie, grunge...).
I don’t have the space to explore all of these artists, but I will mention a few that are popular. Personally I am fond of Bersuit Vergarabat, who are difficult to classify genre-wise, but try the song Sencillamente. Los Piojos are quite popular, and everyone knows El Matador by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Babasónicos is also very well known, and I do love Carismático.
5. Fito Páez. Páez is the last artist I will mention here, and has achieved pretty significant popularity in the ‘90s and 2000s. He’s won five Latin Grammys, and to me is more pop than rock, but everyone loves 11 y 6 (1985) and Mariposa Teknicolor (1994). Cerati, Páez, and García did some collaborative work in the late ‘90s, which is actually pretty cool.
Okay, I think that’s enough for an introduction. There’s a lot more music out there to be explored, but this should give you guys a good basis. Let me know if you end up liking these artists! Music has been an incredibly helpful way to learn both languages and history for me, and I think you’ll find the same. Suerte!

COZY: Pub-glam goofing from a Minneapolis four-piece that might actually be from England, or not.
Tumblr media

"Denim is simply the medium we have chosen to express ourselves as artists."
It's not clear if Cozy are kidding or if they’ve just aged really well. Listening to their bootstomp-tastic garage pop, one gleans fairly quickly that they are majorly influenced by the ever-expanding cult sub-genre of "junk shop glam." And basic snooping reveals they hail from Minneapolis. But deign to ask, and they can convince you they had in fact been cryogenicized back 'round 1974 in some cloudy northern British town, and HoZac Records paid to get them melted out and back on the road. Goofin' or not, on stage they can erase historical perspective worries from your craw with their huge hooks, beastly drummer, and frequent band makeout sessions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COZY are: Bonkers Waddington – Vocals; Baz Bosworthy – Guitar; Gordie Leatherby – Bass; Archie “Swiz” Tugwell – Drums
Give me a basic history of the band.
Bonkers Waddington: Allow me to take this opportunity to dispel a common misconception. For years we were under contractual duress which forced us to peddle a fabricated origin story to the press. However, having asserted ourselves as artists on the heels of our recent smash hit “Denim Child” single -- which I must stress was written by us and not the songwriting team of Stately and Poundsworth our management previously enlisted the services of -- we now have unprecedented control over our destiny. So to be frank, and give you what I believe you Americans call “the straight dope,” the origin of Cozy does not lie in our manager Edwin Bickerton casting us in order to form a prefabricated pop group, as has been previously reported. The truth is we started out nearly a decade ago as a skiffle band that played under various names. As times changed we took on the name Silas Cozy and progressed into a more experimental psychedelic sound. We issued an album called Sidepiper at the Gates of Dawn on EMI, but unfortunately it failed to chart and has long since been deleted. The failure of Silas Cozy hit us all hard, and we briefly considered giving up on music in order to become lorry drivers and such. However, one fateful night Edwin stumbled upon a gig we were doing in a small Dongcaster pub. He was struck by our unrelenting power as a live band and offered to take us in a more commercially viable pop direction, provided we truncate our name. Six months later Cozy’s first single, “Cola Shock Kids,” was sitting at number one on the charts in 21 different countries across the globe. The rest, as they say, is history.
Baz Bozworthy: Four saunas. My house has four saunas.
Now of course music is the thing, but let us start with your clothing. What's with the vests? Who makes the fashion decisions for the band? And what bands / bands would be the prime inspiration for Cozy's evening wear?
BW: To be honest, I’m not sure I agree with the premise of the question. Granted, music is "a" thing. We take our jobs as recording artists and performers very seriously. However, in the pop music business, boots and flares are every bit as important as notes and chords. As for why we wear denim vests: why does Warhol work with paint? Why did Rodin choose to sculpt in bronze? Why did Tolstoy sit down and write War and Peace in the form of a novel rather than compose a philosophical treatise on the relationship between our concepts of fate and divinity? Denim is simply the medium we have chosen to express ourselves as artists. There are a number of bands who have been inspired by our choice in evening wear, but I’m not sure if I should be giving them free press for ripping us off. However, if imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, then this young band called Hello appear to be the biggest Cozy fans around.
BB: Baz hate pant!
So you are the influential band? Who influenced you?
BW: Again, there are lots of bands coming up these days who appear to be influenced by Cozy. Have you heard of Slade? They show real potential, despite flagrantly nicking Baz’s signature guitar sound. But to be honest, I don’t feel they are a threat to our spot atop the charts just yet. The best thing I’ve heard recently is a song called “Memories” by this new band named Kenny. It has strong commercial potential and very moving lyrics. I think it could be a big hit.Oh wait, were you asking about what groups influenced us when we were starting out? To be honest, we don’t have any musical influences. Cozy doesn’t believe in following trends, we believe in setting them. If a group attempts to become the next Beatles, how can they expect to ever become bigger than the Beatles? We would never impose that kind of limitation on our success.
You seem a mild mannered lad, Bonkers. Do you think people are surprised by your forcefulness onstage?
BW: Sometimes even I’m surprised by my forcefulness on stage! But to answer your question, yes, I do believe some are confused by the dichotomy between my on and off stage personas. As you’re no doubt well aware, I’m often referred to as the voice of my generation for penning the lyrics to songs like “Sidepiping” and “Denim Child.” While it isn’t my place to weigh in on whether or not I agree with this assessment, as we both know a number of prestigious universities are already assigning my lyrics in poetry classes which normally focus on giants such as Tennyson and T.S. Eliot. However, academics are often shocked to learn that not only did I pen the oft-quoted couplet “You’re my denim dream/I think I’m gonna bust a seam,” I was also voted “Best Male Dancer in Pop Today” by Cub Beat magazine for the past three years running. Personally I don’t distinguish between my verbal poetry and my kinesthetic poetry. Both are heartfelt expressions of my essential essence.
Do the other bandmates ever express pushback against your frequent onstage kisses?
BW: For the record, I would never kiss anyone without permission. All members of Cozy have signed an “On Stage Skinship Waiver” which grants us the right to show physical affection for one another within the context of our performances. I’ve heard it said storytellers should show rather than tell. It’s in that spirit I sometimes take it upon myself to give our audiences a visual representation of the theme of kissing, which is so integral to our art.
Is there a good story of going for a smooch, missing, and falling down?
BW: During a recent intimate live performance held in Chicago to commemorate our American label HoZac Records’ 10th anniversary, someone in the crowd pulled my knickers off, leaving me fully nude on stage. Surprisingly enough, the culprit wasn’t Baz! If you ever get a chance to talk to him about it, Baz can go on for hours about what a repressive custom he finds the compulsory donning of trousers to be. He has assembled a flow chart on the issue which, I assure you, is quite persuasive!
BB: BAZ HATE PANT!!!
Who would you consider current bands-in-arms for your junkshop power pop sound?
BW: Like I mentioned before, Cozy is often imitated, but never duplicated. It’s almost cute when I hear bands like the Sweet try to copy our sound. I feel like patting them on their well-coiffed little heads and telling them, “Good luck with that boys, you’re going to need it!”That being said there are a number of bands we love and feel an affinity with. Giuda is one. Gorilla is another. The Jeanies, Baby Shakes, and Nobunny are a few more.
Any of your members in other side projects?
BW: Being in a band at the level of Cozy is like juggling multiple full time jobs, so none of us have the time for any outside projects right now. People have said Gordie looks like the leader of this band called Real Numbers, but trust me, Gordie is much better looking than that bloke. Same goes for the story going around about how Baz has started a new band called Private Interests. These rumours are just idle fabrications invented by fans with too much time on their hands.
How was that most recent end-of-summer tour I saw you on? Any good stories you wanna tell from that one?
BW: We had the time of our lives on that tour! Too many enchanted evenings to recall them all here, but Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Fidenza were especially magical. I can’t wait to tour the Continent again and see all the new friends we made! Special thanks to our promoters Jensie and Franz for their hard work. Extra special thanks to our tour manager Mr. Johnny Denim. Johnny was voted Most Valuable Piper for his dedication to Cozy above and beyond the call of duty. We love Johnny so much we have immortalized him in a new song called “Denim Delinquent” that we composed in his honour. There are many stories I would love to share with you from the tour, but our legal counsel has advised me against revealing the lion’s share of them for the time being. I could tell you about the time in Eindhoven when Baz held court with Russian dignitaries backstage while Gordie, Swiz, and myself were terrorized by ghosts in a haunted cornfield, but I don’t think anyone would believe me. Suffice to say, Cozy now wants nothing to do with cornfields ever again.
What's up for Cozy in 2017?
BW: We are taking a much needed breather, but reconvening soon to begin the recording of our much-anticipated second album, tentatively set to be a two-LP set called Double Denim. I’m very excited for our fans to hear how we’ve grown as artists since the recording of Button By Button (HoZac, 2014). A string of new singles is also in the works. I’m not sure when our next world tour is scheduled to begin. Hopefully we will have something to announce within the next few months. Rest assured we are all looking forward to hitting the road as soon as possible and making magical memories with our dear fans.
BB: Building up a horny corner.
Anything else you want to go on about?
BW: I would like to send a message to our fans: Don’t let anyone ever dissuade you from following your dreams. After all, following mine led me to a treasure of immeasurable worth – all of you!

Death Cab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs
Death Cab For Cutie has a new album. It’s called Narrow Stairs, and if you haven’t read the articles, then you may not know that it’s “bloody and loose” and more “hard rock” than any of their previous work. Or maybe you have no clue that guitarist Chris Walla is back as producer, and from there, the album was recorded on analog tape to minimize overdubs. These are the token details we’ve been given. 2005’s Plans, the band’s first major label release, is high-profile studio work – sparkling and calculated. Being the epitome of commercially viable indie rock and a band that’s proved themselves capable of making literate music in the face of popularity, the release of Narrow Stairs isn’t about doubt; it’s about questions. Like, how will the band live up to darling Transatlanticism? Or will Narrow Stairs come close to the ability of Plan’s platinum success? Will Ben Gibbard top his past lyric and vocal work? If the analog Narrow Stairsprocess really was “bloody and loose”, will we even notice, or was it more for their own well-being? Death Cab’s art pop as hard rock? Wait, really? Well, let’s see. The album begins with “Bixby Canyon Bridge”, which starts right into familiar sounds: atmospheric, sweeping and an approximated path of room-filling sequencing. A small ways in, massive, no-holds percussion (accompanied by heavily fuzzed guitar and bass) thwarts the idea that we’d be getting another “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”. And it’s important to reinforce that Narrow Stairs isn’t Plans or Transatlanticism 2.0. If anything, it’s a compromise. The band isn’t reinventing their own wheel, per se, but they are still exploring the structural landscape they’ve already built. The pop elements from Transatlanticism are there (even though a bit subdued in contrast to tracks like “The Sound of Settling”) like on the festive march of “You Can Do Better Than Me” and the flirty riff on “Long Division”. The dark romanticism of Plans are replaced by a dusky and observant attitude that snuggle up nicely with the analog production.  But how does Narrow Stairs speak to the band’s musicianship? The distortion on “Bixby” makes the song come alive, and it’s a trend we hear frequently on tracks like “Cath” and “Long Division”. There are bass lines too, many of them, that richen up the context of Narrow Stairs’ already hearty layering. They are front and center on the band’s eight-minute single, “I Will Posses Your Heart”. More thumpin’ four-string play captain on pessimistic but bouncy “No Sunlight”. Narrow Stairs utilizes a bass’ natural tonality in bewitching ways. Ben Gibbard shines still with his whispery, almost Zen-like lyrics (see “Grapevine Fires” and “Talking Bird”). Some of the tracks – like “Cath” and “Long Division” – might be the best songs they’ve ever written. So maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself. “Pity and Fear” and “The Ice Is Getting Thinner” are outdone by the rest of the album. Others like “Grapevine Fires” and “Your New Twin Sized Bed” have taken several spins to sink in, and they don’t capture the right gut like “Cath”. The first single, “I Will Possess Your Heart” is far too long in context, almost defeating the linear, live band structure of the analog recording. Death Cab has always built brilliant emotional connections with their listeners, both lyrically and instrumentally. In that aspect, Narrow Stairs is just the same as any of their previous work. It’s an experience that I, more than a casual fan, have come to internalize dearly, whether it be with with grand, clean-cut soundscapes or with some blood and tapes.  This article was originally published on AbsolutePunk.net Archive Screenshot --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/reviews/death-cab-for-cutie-narrow-stairs/

Which WordPress theme is high-quality on your business company

At the off danger that you too had those inquiries, then you’re in the suitable vicinity. In this text, we will speak about free WordPress topics as opposed to top rate WordPress issues (blessings and drawbacks).
Commercial
Positives of loose WordPress topics
Within the first region, we’d want to specify that once we say unfastened issues, we simply free WordPress topics which can be recorded Inside the authority WordPress.Org themes registry.
It is free
The best benefit of a free WordPress subject is the value, loose. It brings down the boundary of phase to beginning a weblog. But hearing the word free makes many individuals careful. these are a few normal disservices of making use of a loose WordPress topic:

Is It Worth Hiring A WordPress Consultant?
With regards to hiring someone for a WordPress related activity, it actually depends on who you suspect is the proper character of the activity. You can rent a freelancer, a WordPress company, a first rate developer or a WordPress consultant. But no longer all conditions call for a WordPress consultant. In addition, now not all tasks can be executed by a freelancer.
It depends on loads of factors.
Nature of work
For easy obligations like e-newsletter integration or customization of a theme, You may method a decent freelancer or a developer.
In case you want a custom WordPress website to your commercial enterprise, you really want to method either a company or a equipped WordPress developer.
If you are a small, medium sized or big commercial enterprise residence, you want more than just a custom internet site answer. You want a well-behaved website, a hit online presence, Seo optimized website and conversion price optimization. You will want to run numerous advertising campaigns.
This involves the invention, planning, implementation, and deployment. A consultant is a right individual for this sort of task (period).
A WordPress representative will start with assessing the desires of an internet site for the business/corporation, will exercise session a plan and discuss the viable answers. He’s going to take the reins in his palms to supply a site that takes your enterprise to the subsequent level. The focal point of a WordPress representative is on turning in the website online that generates revenue and drives income.
Price range
You can hire a freelancer at a totally low price. You may find a freelancer too, fortunately, give you the results you want for as low as $five consistent with her. The trouble is freelancers test at the cost of your website. A lot of my customers have shared their terrible memories of running with the freelancers. A number of them well worth mentioning are:
– The work brought was now not as according to the expectations. – After the closing date turned into over, freelancer informed that he turned into now not ready sufficient to provide the answer. – I should technique the freelancer on occasion to get the site fixed. My internet site breaks with each WordPress / plugin replace.
So basically operating with reasonably-priced freelancers come at its own cost.
Hiring a respectable WordPress developer, the only who has a longtime identification is a higher alternative than going for a freelancer. They rate someplace inside the range of $25 – $100 on the hourly basis.
WordPress agencies and WordPress specialists are on the higher give up. The fee for the value and the nice they offer. Their charges commonly vary relying on the form of undertaking necessities you have. If you are a business residence, it’s better to lease a WordPress consultant. This may save you a whole lot of ache for a touch greater rate.

Positives of loose WordPress topics

It is free
The best benefit of a free WordPress subject is the value, loose. It brings down the boundary of phase to beginning a weblog. But hearing the word free makes many individuals careful. Why might somebody come up with a WordPress subject matters unfastened download whilst others are offering top rate subject matters? What is the size? Often people suppose free topics are low nice. It is a brilliant contrary.

Cons of loose WordPress themes

You may find a freelancer too, fortunately, give you the results you want for as low as $five consistent with hr.
They fee for the value and the nice they offer. Their charges commonly vary relying on the form of undertaking necessities you have. If you are a business residence, it’s better to lease a WordPress consultant. This may save you a whole lot of ache for a touch greater rate.

Most Popular Kpop Boy Groups from Old to Newest
1. Seo Taiji & The Boys According to most followers, South Korea's "idol" K-pop scene was created upon the 1992 debut of Seo Taiji & The Boys, a trio of hip-hop singer/rappers that fused American pop music with Korean lyrics. The band's immense popularity helped modernize the country approach to boy band creation, beginning Korea's still-popular trend of preparing polished acts with in-sync choreography, coordinating fashion choices and genre-melding music. Their  first single "I Know" mixed New Jack Swing with pop combination and hip-hop beats, and wound up breaking chart records in Korea. The commanding track laid the groundwork for the boys to continue experimenting with sounds throughout their careers, mixing everything from metal to gangster-rap into their sound, and adopting different musical "concepts" for each album release. Seeing Seo Taiji & The Boys' popularity as an opportunity for profit, Korea's record labels jumped on the new style and began creating copy-cat groups.
2.  H.O.T The first manufactured boy band to debut under the modern-day K-pop power label SM Entertainment, H.O.T dominated the music industry after exploding with bubblegum-pop smash "Candy," and created a kind of fan fervor never before seen in South Korea. The quintet's concerts in the early '90s and late '00s caused near pandemonium, making headlines on national news and forcing the country's Board of Education to make new rules that restricted students from ditching school to see shows. Before the group disbanded in 2001 after five years together, they broke records, sold million of albums and even boasted the first official fan club outside of Korea.
3.  Sechs Kies Similar to how *N SYNC soon became the rivals to the Backstreet Boys, Sechs Kies quickly became the only boy band that could compete with H.O.T. While the two groups acted as friendly rivals to one another, their supporters were notorious for creating online 'fan wars' that likely fueled today's hyper-passionate K-pop fan bases. Like H.O.T, the sextet also sold moved tons of albums, sold out concerts in hours and had their own movie thanks to the success of hits like "Pom Seng Pom Sa," "Couple" and "Road Fighter." The group abruptly announced their decision to disband in 2000, after just three years together, saying they preferred to leave at their height of their success.
4. Shinhwa Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, K-pop's longest-running act Shinhwa continues to live up to its name  which translates to "legend" in Korean.  While most groups fail to even reach the five-year benchmark, the sextet has not only managed to stay together, but has become one of the country's most consistent commercial success stories. The guys count chart-topping hits throughout the years like 1999's "T.O.P.," "I Pray 4 U" in 2002, and this year's "Sniper." Today, members Eric, Lee Min Woo, Kim Dong Wan, Shin Hye Sung, Jun Jin and Andy -- now all in their mid-30s -- refuse to slow down, releasing their 12th album, embarking on an Asian tour and even coming Stateside for KCON 2015.
5. TVXQ This outfit is one of the initial boundary-pushers for what it meant to be a global Korean act. Most notably, the group lead the way for K-pop to enter and thrive in the humongous Japanese record industry, but also held a Guinness world record for the largest official fan club, broke overseas touring records in Japan and headlined Billboard's K-Pop Masters concert in Las Vegas.  one of the very first large-scale Korean pop shows in America. With more than a decade active, TVXQ! were one of the first acts to defy the usual five-year expiration date for Korean pop acts, setting the stage for other acts to enjoy greater and longer success.
6. BIGBANG One of the biggest international Phenomenon to come out of the K-pop scene, BIGBANG blew by boy band tropes by producing and writing their own music, forgoing hardcore choreography and seeing all five members find solo success. BIGBANG currently is the only K-pop act to hold two arena tours in North America and just this year tied a record on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart only PSY had previously achieved. Their fan base, the VIPs, are a force to be reckoned with too -- they earned the Best Worldwide Act honor at the 2011 MTV EMAs and cinched Billboard's inaugural Fan Army Face-Off in 2014. "Fantastic Baby" is also the K-pop music video with the most views on YouTube, not including PSY.
7. FTISLAND With their harder pop-rock sound and multi-instrumental skills, FTISLAND was one of the earliest acts to show that an emphasis on musicianship won't befuddle fans -- the band has a following just a rabid as their dancing boy band counterparts. And with each member boasting success on TV and in musicals, you could argue that every member is a Pete Wentz- or Adam Levine-type, instead of one dude getting all the attention and focus.
8.  INFINITE This septet is the best representation of intense, K-pop boy band choreography, always making a point of improving their dance moves with each new project. With nearly every music video release, INFINITE puts out an accompanying choreography version to highlight their dedication to their steps. But their music is always on point, too, from last year's excellent "Back" to 2012's "The Chaser" Billboard's No. 1 K-pop song of that year.
9.  Beast More impressive than Beast's music is the group's origin story Beast's members were initially known for having very little individual success in the industry being dropped by other labels,  joining groups that never launched before they were put together by their record label. Despite a slow start, Beast has proven to be both not only a commercially viable act but critically acclaimed as well; member Junhyung has co-produced and co-written a majority of Beast's material, including "Good Luck," Billboard's No. 1 K-pop song of last year.
10.  G.O.D The five-member boy band quickly hit it big after their 1999 debut, Chapter 1. The group earned an elusive "million-seller" album just two years into their careers and were the last group to sell as much with one album until current K-pop sensations EXO. The band indefinitely went on hiatus to pursue solo activities in 2006, but reunited for a hugely profitable comeback in 2014. They're not the sole K-pop boy band to successfully regroup, but have since been one of the few K-pop acts to book American arenas like the Staples Center and Prudential Center

Mary Kay Ash:

After retirement, she decided to write a book to assist women in enterprise. The book turned into a perfect business plan, and Mary Kay founded the world-renowned cosmetics company that bears her name.
Thomas Alva Edison:

Music Review: Dirty Projectors - Dirty Projectors
Dirty Projectors Dirty Projectors [Domino; 2017] Rating: 2.5/5 David Longstreth’s recent comments on Instagram regarding the decay of the concept of indie rock are as valid a critique that I’ve yet read on the past decade-plus of Western music culture. Even if he walked it back post-inflammatory headlines, it doesn’t erase the fact that, whether or not you enjoy the music, “indie” has been an institutionalized commercial force for quite some time now; the more that we come to accept this as a given, the more we need to ask ourselves both what exactly draws us to certain forms of music and what conditions allowed for this cultural moment to come into existence. Why was underground music such a viable commodity at the turn of the millennium? What’s changed since then to allow more poptimist tendencies to creep into the conversation, to shift our opinions about trap music and New Age and allow our once championed 21st-century guitar heroes to seep back into the niche? How much of that music still resonates with you? How much of it doesn’t? Dirty Projectors’ rise to stardom was an odd, yet uplifting best-case scenario of how the early 2000s ideals of indie rock could work within the system. Longstreth’s uncompromising vision — which drew from any number of influences while remaining willfully, undeniably itself — carried the band through a confrontational and bizarre evolution of albums that reached an unlikely nexus with Bitte Orca, one of the most beloved guitar records in recent memory. Dirty Projectors was always staunchly billed as a capital-A Art project, and yet for all of Longstreth’s conceptual acrobatics about Don Henley, the suburban sprawl, and our impact on the environment, in reality the group’s greatest successes were achieved on an incredibly visceral, exterior level. Longstreth’s strange sonic sculptures and compositional anomalies have always been more telling than any of the theoretical underpinnings in his music, and one of the great epiphanies of the project was seeing how, in tunneling into his own twitchy musical rhetoric, Dirty Projectors somehow uncovered an even greater sense of shared communication and shimmering pop universality. So now that we return to Longstreth five years out from releasing anything resembling new work, with the added sting of an ended relationship, a dissolved band, and a hyper-specific sound completely dashed, the matter of language feels as prevalent as ever. On Dirty Projectors (perhaps the first self-titled album whose eponymous name feels as if it were addressing the project in a separate, past tense), Longstreth makes some of the same strides that he did on Swing Lo Magellan towards reaching a simpler, more common musical vocabulary, negotiating the reality of fame and royalties with his longstanding quest for individuality. If Dirty Projectors’ R&B leanings were implied before, here they are blown out to bombastic levels of flair and personal drama, openly touting Longstreth’s newfound songwriting connections to artists like Rih Rih and Solange. In brief moments, Dirty Projectors feels like a great rediscovery, a path forward for the project that unifies Longstreth’s fetishistic eccentricity with his peculiar knack for the accessible. More often than not, however, the album scans more like a warm-up, a shedding of old coats and ideas that in its randomness can’t seem to figure out what exactly it wants its music to do. This unsure balance starts right out the gate with the queasy single “Keep Your Name,” a screwed-up lounge ballad that directly addresses Longstreth’s former bandmate and girlfriend Amber Coffman, setting the tone for Dirty Projectors’ intermittent flashes of beauty and blunder. Led by Longstreth’s jarringly pitched-down voice, which utters petulant insults (“What I want from art is truth/ What you want is fame”) in between awkward segments of rapping about Gene Simmons, the track presents a bounty of musically fascinating ideas that nonetheless seem to sabotage one another. One could certainly take this feeling of disarray as intentional, and it bears mentioning how Longstreth actually samples a previous Dirty Projectors’ song for the chorus of the track; between the album title and the song’s subject matter, it feels unprecedented for a band name in itself to be such a source of personal and musical divide. But like many other songs throughout Dirty Projectors, the ideas ultimately feel glued together, enjoyable more as a novelty creation than as a living, breathing thing. This disconnect between Dirty Projectors’s pop tendencies with its “art” signaling is what ultimately stains the album with such a deep sense of confusion, making it difficult to parse who exactly this music is written for, if not people who are already fans of Dirty Projectors. “Up In Hudson” hits a lovely, theatrical stride that even culminates in an outro jam reminiscent of none other than LCD Soundsystem. But as the lyrics explicitly detail the events leading to Longstreth and Coffman’s meeting and eventual dissolve, the song begs the question of whether it could truly stand outside this band’s specific cult of personality. Elsewhere, “Ascent Through Clouds” achieves an aching beauty in its fingerpicked guitar opening (despite the somewhat redundant autotune), before suddenly flipping the switch into a shuffling house number, replete with unsavory electronic noise and Yeezus-esque vocalizations that leave the track in a weird yet strangely run-of-the-mill middle ground. Where Longstreth really flounders, however, is in his attempts at full-on R&B camp, in the goofy self-destructive rap of “Death Spiral,” the Bollywood techno squelch of “Work Together,” and the mumbling nothingness of “Winner Take Nothing.” These pieces function mainly as insular gestures toward eclectic pop, unusual collections of sound that unfortunately lack the melodic punch of the styles that it attempts to ape. There is one saving grace on Dirty Projectors, however, and that is in the delicately heartbreaking requiem of “Little Bubble,” the most openly emotional song Longstreth has written to date. Between a repeating sequence in which Longstreth juxtaposes the warmth of lying next to Coffman in the morning against the cold desperation of waking up to an empty room, “Little Bubble” is a concoction wholly beholden to Dirty Projectors, a sparse meditation on the futility and longing in dreams, and an apt metaphor on the collapse of indie rock ideology, depending on how you look at it. Some of this forward-looking sensibility makes it into “Cool Your Heart” as well, an admittedly light Vampire Weekend ska that nonetheless deploys its mayhem sampling in support of a freeing, shake-it-off beach jam with Dawn Richard. Where so much of Dirty Projectors stumbles, songs like these light a new path forward for Longstreth, a marriage of the unorthodox and the ubiquitous that tucks a subtle composerly wit into something much larger than itself. If anything, Dirty Projectors is a necessary document of Longstreth picking up the pieces, redefining himself and his art in the wake of enormous personal and cultural crisis. With no clear direction for an acclaimed avant-indie stalwart, it’s a fair move to acknowledge the dominance and possibility in Top 40 mechanics on top of the scattered nature of genre in the digital age. But Dirty Projectors mainly functions as just that: a snapshot of an artist as viewed from the outside, struggling to create something that applies to anybody but himself. The themes of divorce and moving on are laid out literally and without metaphor, and yet the music still feels obscured, reliant upon self-reference to convey its perspective. Though time may have ravaged many of the titans of the 2000s Pitchfork canon, a stroll through Dirty Projectors’ catalog reveals one of the more stunning trajectories in modern music, and there’s no reason to think that Longstreth isn’t still bubbling with new, strange ideas. Perhaps now that the messy business of getting back into the game is over with, he can rediscover that sacred, arcane language that made his music seem so alien yet familiar to begin with. http://j.mp/2mgAaav
