Premier League: 5 players who could move to Chelsea this January

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has plenty of options for improving his squad during this transfer window. After their summer transfer ban prevented them from making any pre-season acquisitions, Chelsea are now able to sign players for the first time in 12 months.

Despite winning eight Bundesliga titles with the Bavarian club during his career, Bayern have struggled in Germany’s top-flight this season and sit third in the table behind RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Chelsea believe that they could tempt Alaba with a new challenge in the Premier League, with the Austrian left-back being a mainstay in Bayern’s side since he came through the club’s youth ranks in 2009.

Wilfried Zaha, Crystal Palace

The Blues may look closer to home, as Wilfried Zaha remains a potential transfer window mover from a tumultuous summer.

Signing Zaha would be a clever move for any top-six sides the Ivory Coast winger is a proven Premier League player and can torment the league’s defenders across the whole front three.

Crystal Palace, however, are holding out for an £80m transfer fee for their star player, having rejected lower bids in the summer from Arsenal and Everton.

Nathan Aké, Bournemouth

Chelsea is also widely linked with a move for former defender Nathan Aké from Bournemouth.

The Dutch defender, who can also play at left-back, last played for the club in 2017 before sealing a £20m move to the Cherries that summer after an initial loan spell at Dean Court in the first half of the 2016/17 season.

Having been virtually ever-present for Eddie Howe’s side since his permanent move, Chelsea are tempted to bring him back to Stamford Bridge but will reportedly need to sell once of their existing center-half options before making a move for Aké.

The most likely candidate is Andreas Christensen, given Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma’s popularity with current head coach Lampard and Fikayo Tomori’s potential in defense.

Where better in the world to train for a marathon than London?

It's flat; safe; seldom windy; never too cold or too hot; and the rain (plenty of it, for sure) falls in a steady, manageable hum.  Above all, the biggest city in Europe is also magnificently green.

An Antipodean new to London, I spent much of 2016 shifting across town from couch to couch and exploring running routes fascinating and varied.  The quirky maritime history of Canada Water and Rotherhithe greenways. The weird, hulking industrial scapes along the Thames path from Woolwich to Dartford.  The wide open spaces of Richmond Park.  The monuments and manicured lawns of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park.  The locks and houseboats of the Lea River.  The odd thrill of running 20 feet above London on an old disused rail line from Highgate to Finsbury Park.

Every serious runner needs a favourite route.  Call it a “happy trail” - so aesthetically-pleasing and so familiar you just it all in and smile, no matter how your day’s been, or how it’s shaping up.

It's an easy one for me – the 11km loop of Thames-side running between my place and Hammersmith and Putney Bridges. 

I cross the former first, taking a left turn on the south bank to follow the leafy path behind the Wetland Centre.  Crossing Beverly Brook, I'm back on a quiet, paved road; sometimes sidestepping rowers carrying their craft to or from the water like a robber dodging furniture movers in a pantomime sketch.

The view upstream from Putney Bridge at high tide is one of the best in London: tree-lined banks across a wide blue river dotted with boats, crowned by the distant Wembley Arch far away to the north-west.  On the north side, I turn left again and run through the ancient Bishop's Park, ducking away from the river briefly to skirt around Craven Cottage – Fulham Football Clubs's home ground – before returning Thames-side for the leg towards Hammersmith.

From there, it's a right turn past Charing Cross hospital and the grand terraced houses of Baron's Court and I'm home.  It’s a route I could run in my sleep.

Do I get tired or bored of running the same route?  A better question is - when I’m alone amongst London's endless greenery, passing happy faces and riverside vistas, what is there not to be happy about?

Transfer deadline day: Luiz, Lukaku, Iwobi and all major moves as window closes

The transfer window was busier last night for Premier League clubs being the final day of the window. Together Premier League clubs spent £1.41bn this summer, which is just short of the record £1.43bn spent two seasons ago, according to Four Four Two. Notable football stars made the headlines as they were involved in shock moves away from their previous clubs. Players such as Rumelu Lukaku, David Luiz, and Andy Carroll were among the headline movers on a busy final day. Arsenal completed their shock signing of Luiz from Chelsea while Manchester United allowed Lukaku switch to Italian giants, Inter Milan. The other player that joined Arsenal yesterday was Kieran Tierney from Celtic. Arsenal’s deadline day moves saw them edge past Manchester City to become the Premier League’s biggest spenders of the summer having pushed out £155million. Luiz’s surprise move came at a reported cost of £7million with Tierney arriving for around £25million. For Newcastle United they were able to bring back Carroll who left the club eight years ago. Tottenham also captured Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham. The Spurs spent a reported £25million to land highly-rated winger Sessegnon on a six-year deal from Fulham with Josh Onomah moving the other way. Midfielder Giovani Lo Celso also joined Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Betis. Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi left Arsenal switching to Everton. Everton signed Iwobi for an undisclosed fee on a five-year contract. For Manchester City they were able to sign 33-year-old former England goalkeeper Scott Carson, on a season-long loan. Wilfried Zaha, Dayot Upamecano and Paulo Dybala are all possible deadline day movers

Premier League transfer spending could drop for the second summer in a row – unless there are some big signings on Thursday’s transfer deadline day.

English top-flight clubs have spent just over £1bn this summer, short of last year’s £1.2bn and 2017’s £1.4bn.

The deadline for Championship clubs is also Thursday, but teams from Leagues One and Two, Scotland and across Europe can buy players until 2 September.

Ten Premier League clubs have broken their transfer records this summer.

Spurs could have to break their transfer record to sign Juventus’ Paulo Dybala

Tottenham are being strongly linked to Juventus forward Paulo Dybala and Real Betis midfielder Giovani lo Celso – with their playmaker Christian Eriksen keen on a move abroad. They ended their interest in a loan move for Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho on Wednesday.

Manchester United had been interested in both Dybala and Eriksen but could now make no deadline-day signings.

English clubs can still sell players after the deadline – with Romelu Lukaku likely to leave United for either Inter Milan or Juventus.

Likewise, Eriksen could leave Spurs any time until 2 September. But with Premier League clubs unable to sign replacements after Thursday, a Paul Pogba exit from United seems less plausible.

Arsenal could do with a defender after letting captain Laurent Koscielny go to Bordeaux – with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano a rumoured target.

Title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool appear happy with their squads – with no deadline-day activity expected.

Chelsea, who sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid for up to £150m, are unable to sign anybody – bar Mateo Kovacic, who had been on loan – because of a transfer ban.

Everton could be busy on deadline day. They are expected to improve on their £30m bid for Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi, while they also want Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.

Who have been the big movers this summer?

Nicolas Pepe (Arsenal), Wesley Moraes (Aston Villa), Youri Tielemans (Leicester), Rodri (Man City), Joelinton (Newcastle), Oli McBurnie (Sheffield United), Danny Ings (Southampton), Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham), Sebastien Haller (West Ham) and Raul Jimenez (Wolves) have all gone for club-record fees this summer

Half of the 20 Premier League clubs have broken their transfer record this summer, with Sheffield United smashing theirs four times. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leicester (twice), Manchester City, Newcastle, Southampton, Tottenham, West Ham and Wolves are the other nine.

Harry Maguire’s £80m switch from Leicester to Manchester United has been the biggest Premier League signing of the summer so far.

Arsenal spent £72m to sign Lille winger Nicolas Pepe, champions Manchester City bought Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri for £62.8m and Spurs spent £53.8m on Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele – Spurs’ first first-team signing since January 2018.

Villa have spent more than £100m, the second promoted club to hit that figure after Fulham, who did so during the summer of 2018, only to be relegated in April 2019.

The other biggest transfers have been Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m from Crystal Palace), West Ham striker Sebastien Haller (£45m from Eintracht Frankfurt), Newcastle striker Joelinton (£40m from Hoffenheim) and Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans (reported £40m from Monaco).

Chelsea also spent £40m on Real Madrid midfielder Kovacic despite having the transfer embargo. He was already there on loan, so they have been allowed to sign him permanently as he was registered.

Premier League spending could fall behind

On 1 August, Premier League spending was £922m, with La Liga’s 20 clubs spending a combined £1.06bn this summer.

Real Madrid have spent about £280m this summer – rising by another £61m if clauses are met in the signing of Hazard from Chelsea.

Atletico Madrid have splashed out over £220m in a big squad rebuild – recouping £280m in sales. They signed Benfica forward Joao Felix for £113m, the fifth most-expensive transfer of all time, to replace Antoine Griezmann, who became the sixth most costly footballer when Barcelona paid £107m for him.

English top-flight clubs have since overtaken that La Liga figure – but Spanish clubs have another three-and-a-half weeks to beat their total for the first time in over a decade.
