Hell Hath No Fury
There are only three things a Navy man fears:
The sea in storm,
a night with no moon,
and the anger of Lieutenant Katherine Bright.
- Short Story-
Chapter one
The afternoon sun blazed down on the tarmac, mirroring the intensity of expectation that buzzed through the air at Coronado Island, San Diego. Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw strode across the base with a sense of purpose, his light brown wavy hair tousled by the breeze, a stark contrast to the regimental lines of parked fighter jets. He carried the weight of his father's legacy on his broad shoulders, but his gait was easy, his browneyes alert as he scoped out the scene for anyone he might recognize.
"Hey, isn't that Bradshaw?" someone called out from a group of naval aviators huddled near the hangar, their conversation momentarily pausing as they sized up the newcomer.
"Rooster!" another voice joined in, and there was a tinge of respect laced with a hint of jest.
"Bradshaw" was indeed a name well-known around these parts, and Bradley's arrival was not going unnoticed. He flashed his signature smile, the one that crinkled the corners of his eyes, and approached the group with a casual swagger that seemed to come as naturally to him as flying.
"Thought I'd find you birds here," Bradley quipped, his voice carrying over the din of aircraft engines warming up in the background. "You guys look like you're about to fall asleep—hope I'm not interrupting naptime."
Laughter erupted from the aviators, and one of them, a guy with a crew cut and an armful of tattoos, gave Bradley a good-natured shove. "Only thing we're missing is your stand-up routine, Rooster," he retorted, the camaraderie between them clear.
"Give me a break, Jackson," Bradley shot back, his moustache twitching with amusement. "I just got here and you're already after my killer material?"
"Save it for the skies, hotshot," another pilot chimed in, a smirk playing on his lips. "We'll see if your jokes fly as high as your F/A-18."
"Ouch, that's cold, man," Bradley feigned hurt, rubbing his chest as if wounded. "But you know I only soar with the eagles, brother."
They ribbed each other some more, the exchange of banter as fluid as the ocean waves crashing against the San Diego shorelines. Bradley's charm was as evident as the glint of sunlight on polished aviator wings—a tool he wielded with finesse among his peers.
"Alright, alright," Bradley finally said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "Let's save the trash talk for someone who can handle it. I'm off to check the duty roster. Catch you jokers later."
With a final round of laughter and a few slaps on the back, Bradley left the group, still smiling as he continued to navigate his way through the living, breathing entity that was NAS North Island.
Bradley's laughter trailed off as he turned away from the group, the echo of their camaraderie fading into the hum of activity that enveloped the base. With each step, his boots struck the tarmac with purpose, mirroring the rhythm of his anticipation for what Top Gun would bring. He wove through a maze of aircraft and personnel, the scent of jet fuel hanging heavy in the balmy San Diego air.
It was then that he saw her striding across the base like a tempest given form. Her auburn hair slicked back in the regulation bun, capturing the golden sunlight in a fiery dance. She moved with a confidence that drew eyes effortlessly, her flight suit hugging the curves of her tall frame in a manner that suggested strength rather than vulnerability.
Bradley paused midstride, his gaze latched onto her figure from across the distance. The world seemed to slow, the clatter of mechanics' tools and distant chatter of pilots blurring into insignificance.
She lifted her head, as if sensing the weight of his stare, and for an electric moment, their eyes locked. Bradley's heart revved like an engine pushing into afterburner. In the young woman’s bright hazel eyes, he caught a glimmer of something—a flash of recognition, perhaps, or the flicker of curiosity that mirrored his own. A silent conversation passed between them, laden with questions neither had voiced.
The woman’s gaze didn't waver, but there was no softening in her stance, no smile gracing her lips. She held his eyes just long enough to acknowledge him before she redirected her attention forward, her pace never faltering as she continued on her path.
Bradley watched her go, the sight of her leaving an imprint on his mind like the afterimage of a camera flash. There was something about her—a gravity that pulled at him, urging him closer even as common sense dictated he maintain his orbit. He shook his head, attempting to dislodge the sudden fascination, and resumed walking.
"Bradshaw," he muttered to himself, a smirk playing at the corner of his mustached mouth, "pace yourself."
The sound of his boots against the ground returned to its steady cadence as Bradley made his way to the duty roster, his thoughts lingering on the enigmatic redhead.
The midday sun was merciless, its rays bouncing off the tarmac and creating mirages that danced at the edge of vision. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw sauntered towards the hangar, his flight jacket unzipped to combat the heat. He was a man who moved with purpose, but there was an ease to his steps—a casual confidence that marked him as much as the wings pinned to his chest.
"Hey," he called out, spotting the familiar auburn hair that had captivated him earlier. Her nametag read; Bright, examining a clipboard, her brow furrowed in concentration as she stood beside one of the F-18 Super Hornets.
"Hello," she said without looking up, her voice clipped and efficient.
"Bradley Bradshaw," he offered, extending a hand. "But you can call me Rooster."
"Is that supposed to charm me?" Katherine finally glanced at him, her hazel eyes appraising as they met his own. There was no warmth in her handshake, only the firm grip of someone used to asserting herself.
"Depends," Bradley replied, his smile easy and undiminished by her cool reception. "Does it work?"
"Let's keep this professional, Lieutenant Bradshaw." Katherine withdrew her hand, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I've heard about you. Top of your class, son of an aviator, the whole package, right?"
"Guilty as charged," he conceded with a half-shrug. "And you're Fury, the instructor who makes grown men cry in the simulators. Impressive."
"Impressive indeed," Katherine quirked a brow, a hint of amusement in her tone. "But I don’t aim to make them cry, just sweat a little. The tears are optional." Her lips curved into a sardonic smile as she held his gaze, her hazel eyes shimmering under the harsh sunlight.
Bradley chuckled, a low, throaty sound that seemed to reverberate through the hangar. "Well, I’m all for a good sweat session now and then. Keeps things interesting, don’t you think?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow, a silent challenge in her expression. "Oh, so you’re one of those, are you? Thinks he can charm his way through everything?"
He took a step closer, the playful glint in his eyes matching hers. "I assure you, Lieutenant Bright, my charms are just one aspect of my many talents."
She arched a brow, clearly unimpressed. “Careful," she cautioned, her voice a blend of warning and amusement. "I've seen pilots like you come and go, thinking they can sweet talk their way into anything."
Bradley's lips curled into a confident smirk, the challenge in her eyes only fueling his desire to crack through her defenses. "Maybe they just didn't have the right copilot to navigate those tricky maneuvers."
Katherine's laughter was unexpected, a melodic sound that cut through the tension between them like a breath of fresh air. "You're certainly not lacking in confidence, Rooster. I'll give you that much."
His grin widened, a dimple making an appearance on his cheek. "Confidence is my co-pilot's middle name."
She shook her head in mock exasperation, but there was a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Well, Lieutenant Bradshaw, consider this your pre-flight check. I don't make exceptions for charm in the cockpit."
"Good thing I'm not just all charm, then," Bradley retorted with a wink, his tone light but laced with a flicker of intensity. He was enjoying the banter, the push and pull between them sparking a fire that he couldn't deny. Despite Bright’s resistance, there was a magnetic pull drawing him closer to her flame.
She rolled her eyes playfully, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. "We'll see about that, Lieutenant." Her words held a challenge, but her eyes betrayed a glimmer of amusement, a crack in the armor she wore so well.
As they stood in the shadow of the fighter jet, a comfortable silence settled between them. The hum of mechanics working on aircraft engines provided a rhythmic backdrop to their charged conversation. Bradley found himself studying the woman, taking in the set of her jawline, the curve of her lips, and the determined furrow of her brow as she reviewed the clipboard.
"So, Fury," Bradley began, what’s your name?”
She spared him a sidelong glance, as if deliberating whether to indulge him with her real name. After a beat, she relented, a small smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "Katherine. Katherine Bright," she confessed, the admission carrying a note of vulnerability that surprised even her. It was as though sharing this small piece of herself was a breach in the fortress she had so meticulously built around her heart.
"Katherine," Bradley repeated, savoring the sound of her name on his tongue as if testing its weight. "A fitting name for someone who shines as brightly as you do."
Her cheeks flushed imperceptibly at the compliment, but she quickly regained her composure. "Smooth, Bradshaw. But I've heard that line before."
A mischievous smirk crossed his lips as he savored the challenge she presented. "I must admit, Katherine, you have a way of bringing out my creativity. And trust me, I have plenty of new lines up my sleeve just for you." His voice dripped with seductive charm as he leaned in closer.
Katherine's hazel eyes flickered with a mixture of amusement and something deeper, a hint of intrigue that she tried to mask behind her professional demeanor. He could feel the magnetic pull between them intensifying, his presence almost tangible against her skin as he leaned in closer, the scent of her perfume mingling with the metallic tang of jet fuel.
"Is that right?" she challenged, her voice barely above a whisper but laced with an undeniable spark., his gaze locked on hers with an intensity that made his pulse quicken. "Oh, I have a whole arsenal of lines reserved just for you, Katherine," he murmured.
A dark blush crept up from her neck, her attention already returning to the clipboard. "If you'll excuse me, I have work to do."
"Of course," Bradley replied, pushing himself off the jet. "See you around, Fury."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bradley finds the roster, scanning it meticulously until he finds his name, he’s to start tomorrow morning at 0800 hours in briefing room four, with a lesson from none other than Lieutenant K. Bright.

Remember my little story about Mike's son in love with porn star Will from my dream?
Here's an extract!
It's a WIP so don't hesitate to let me know what you think of it!
WARNING: language and sexual themes.
___________________________
Mike Wheeler was a man of average. Born and raised in small, provincial town Hawkins, Indiana to a traditional family with his parents and two sisters. They were all grown now, his sisters living their life in Seattle and San Diego and parents gone to Florida. Only Mike remained in Hawkins. Even his childhood friends had left to other states or countries.
He had lived in the city for a while, during his College years, until he met a young woman named Jezebel Markowski, an American girl from Polish descent he married at twenty five after she'd gotten pregnant with their unexpected son. And they moved from the city back to Hawkins, in his parents' house that he inherited for the occasion. And just like that, Mike's life was sealed. Two years later, they had a daughter and four years after that, another one, completing the perfect American family painting of mommy, daddy and their three adorable kids.
Jezebel was a stay-at-home mom and Mike worked as a clerk in a printing company. Not the most exciting of jobs but it paid the bills and provided food for the whole family.
He didn't hate his life. Not really. Not completely. Sure, it wasn't exciting. Younger, he dreamed of becoming a famous writer, turning his campaigns into full fledged stories that would captivate crowds. He wanted to be the new Tolkien. The new Tolkien! Thirty years later, he laughed at his own candid naivety. He wanted to live on a boat too, with only love, sun and water as fuel. You're stupid like that when you're twenty and he was no different.
Now, at forty, all his youth dreams had long been buried and forsaken. He couldn't stay idle with a child on the go and selling printers was a mature job, an adult job, something real and responsible. And his house was clean and homey. Jezebel was good at this kind of thing. And she always wore floral dresses with her blond hair tied in a loose bun.
He sniffled, securing his bag of groceries under his arm and opened the car with the other. Looking absentmindedly at his surroundings, his eyes fell on the facade of the bookstore just across the street and he froze. Among the books and magazines on display, there was the new edition of People magazine.
The title read, "WILL BYERS, THE CONQUEROR, HOW HE REVOLUTIONIZED THE PORN INDUSTRY."
His heart sunk in his chest. Will Byers was his best friend from childhood, among other things. They had grown up together in this small town before Will brutally moved to Chicago with his mother and siblings when he was fourteen. Now, his best friend among other things, and Godfather of his elder daughter, was a porn star! If someone had told him decades prior that shy, cute little Will would end up fucking men in front a camera and pose naked in magazines for a million dollars weekly, he wouldn't have believed them! This just wouldn't have made any sense.
And yet. Will was a porn star. And it was damn awkward. He had never watched any of Will's movies per se. He had roamed the Internet once or twice, out of boredom and curiosity, falling across a video of Will being sucked off in oil, and it had made him uncomfortable as hell. A bit grossed out too. The worst was visiting him on set. Oh boy, that was unpleasant! And Mike avoided it unless he didn't have a choice, like this one time he had to let baby Nate to Will's care because Jezebel was having post birth complications and Mike had to go to work to pay the hospital bill.
Crossing rooms full of naked men and women doing all sorts of sexual stuff with a crying baby in his arms and find his best friend naked, his cock buried in some guy's ass with a camera right on them and a guy on a chair, shouting "Try another angle so we can see your lovely cock better!" was the most awkward, most surreal experience he'd ever lived. He hadn't lingered, pushed the crying baby into the arms of a confused Will and fled with a vague thank you without looking back. Jezebel yelled at him when he told her he had left their two weeks old baby on a porn set. Said it was going to leave their child traumatized and scarred.
Fifteen years later, Nate didn't look traumatized or scarred. He was a polite and well behaved kid, did good in school, had healthy friends. And most importantly, he wasn't interested in dating, which was a very, very good point as far as his religious mom was concerned. He didn't seem to be interested in girls or boys - Mike wouldn't have cared if it were the case - and spent his days reading and playing video games. And he loved Will. All his kids did. Will was like a surrogate dad to them and Mike was glad. Will was very important to him, after all.
Jezebel had her reservations. She disapproved of his job and lifestyle, among other things, but she was clever enough to know not to interfere in her husband and his best friend's complicated relationship. And she knew that in spite of doing porn, Will was a good and healthy man. Not exactly the Puritan role model she wanted for her son but then again, Mike wasn't either. Not that she ever pressed the matter of course.
He blinked, swallowing on empty, his eyes still glued on the magazine cover.
It was a photo of Will clothed (for once), wearing a revealing black shirt that stuck to his toned body, showing glimpses of skin and tattoos from its designed holes. His bronze coloured hair was disheveled in an elaborated mess, his hand holding his head with a cigarette between two fingers, his pink, full lips, parted to expire a round of smoke. It wasn't fully sexual but it still was a very erotic photo. Inviting. Sinful. But then again, Will was sin incarnated. And it made Mike's heart hammer in his chest and ears buzz, oblivious to the rest of the world.
He sucked in a deep breath, forcing unsolicited memories away. Those days were long gone. He wasn't bitter. He wasn't. He had chosen the life he had. It was for the best, the right, mature thing to do! He sighed, still looking at Will's flawless beauty. He was still as breathtakingly gorgeous as when he was twenty. And it wasn't even that photoshopped. Mike knew the guy in real life, after all. Will was flawless naturally.
And Mike, with his growing baldness, beer belly and stress wrinkles paled in comparison. He was far from the dark-haired tantalizing ephebe he used to be. Really far… He barely recognized himself anymore.
He shook his head. This wasn't the moment to reflect and wallow in self-pity. He was passed forty years old and didn't have Will's money. He didn't have time to go to the gym or have a personal coach. He didn't have time to do yoga, diet and care for himself. He worked twelve hours a day for minimum wage and had three kids to care for! Will didn't. Will spent his days soaked in massage oil with his cock constantly warmed up!
In opposition, Mike had sex maybe once or twice a month, at best! Most of the time, it was more like once every two blue moons! And a quickie before sleep in the dark.
Clearly, they lived quite different lives.
He sighed to himself. Will was coming over for dinner tonight and he was happy to see him. He was coming with his boyfriend Ravi, a nice guy. A porn actor too. Not as famous as Will but they still shot a lot of sextapes together and Ravi was known enough in the gay porn scene. They had been together for ten years but didn't have any children. Will said it was for the best, given their job and life. He didn't want his kid to be under media scrutiny. This was a cruel world after all and Mike could only agree with Will, even if it was a waste. Will would have made a wonderful dad.
He frowned, clearing his thoughts, and pushed the bag of groceries in the back seat of the car before hopping in and turning the engine, Will's photo cover following him from the corner of his eye down the street.

California braces for another heat wave (Yahoo News) The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Tuesday for much of California that will last from Wednesday through next Monday, the third potentially record-breaking heat wave over the last two months in a state racked by a drought made worse by climate change. Temperatures are forecast to reach 116 degrees in the valleys of San Diego over the weekend, and even higher in desert portions of the state. In the Central Valley, where much of the nation’s food is grown, temperatures are forecast to reach 111 degrees on Sunday, and Yosemite National Park could see temperatures of over 108 degrees for several days in a row, the National Weather Service warned.
Haitian President assassinated (BBC/AP) Haitian President Jovonel Moïse, 53, was killed in his private residence at 1 a.m. local time by armed assailants, amid political instability in the impoverished Caribbean nation. First Lady Martine Moïse was injured in the gunfire. Moïse had been ruling by decree for more than two years after the country failed to hold elections and parliament was dissolved. Prime Minister Claude Joseph assumed leadership of Haiti with help of police and the military and decreed a two-week state of siege following Moïse’s killing, which stunned a nation grappling with some of the Western Hemisphere’s highest poverty, violence and political instability. Inflation and gang violence are spiraling upward as food and fuel becomes scarcer, while 60% of Haitian workers earn less than $2 a day. The increasingly dire situation comes as Haiti is still trying to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 following a history of dictatorship and political upheaval.
Dutch journalist shot who exposed the mob (Washington Post) It was evening in Amsterdam when Peter R. de Vries stepped out of the television studio and into the downtown streets. Decades investigating cold-case killings had earned the silver-haired 64-year-old accolades and a reputation as one of the most famous journalists in the Netherlands. His career in crime reporting had also earned him death threats, but friends said he laughed off the danger. Shortly after leaving the TV studio on Tuesday, de Vries was shot. “He was seriously wounded and is fighting for his life,” Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema told reporters. “He is a national hero to us all. A rare, courageous journalist who tirelessly sought justice.” The Netherlands has one of the lowest violent crime rates in Europe. But its long shoreline, numerous ports and excellent infrastructure has made it a major hub for drug trafficking, and de Vries had been working against them.
Russia’s pandemic response (Foreign Policy) Russia is firmly in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave. Every day, there are about 22,000 reported new infections—twice as many as during the peak of the first wave in May 2020—and more than 600 deaths. The new delta variant of the virus, which Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said is responsible for 90 percent of new infections in the Russian capital, has caught Russia almost completely unawares. Now, the campaign for parliamentary elections in September could make fighting the pandemic even harder, since the ruling United Russia party may be even more reluctant to impose unpopular measures like lockdowns.
Taliban Try to Polish Their Image as They Push for Victory (NYT) In June, when the Taliban took the district of Imam Sahib in Afghanistan’s north, the insurgent commander who now ruled the area had a message for his new constituents, including some government employees: Keep working, open your shops and keep the city clean. The water was turned back on, the power grid was repaired, garbage trucks collected trash and a government vehicle’s flat tire was mended—all under the Taliban’s direction. Imam Sahib is one of dozens of districts caught up in a Taliban military offensive that has swiftly captured more than a quarter of Afghanistan’s districts, many in the north, since the U.S. withdrawal began in May. It is all part of the Taliban’s broader strategy of trying to rebrand themselves as capable governors while they press a ruthless, land-grabbing offensive across the country. But the signs that the Taliban have not reformed are increasingly clear: An assassination campaign against government workers, civil society leaders and security forces continues on pace. And in areas the insurgents have seized, women are being forced out of public-facing roles, and girls out of schools.
Iran nuclear worries (Foreign Policy) Iran has begun the process of making enriched uranium metal, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported on Tuesday, a move which the United States called “an unfortunate step backwards” while France, Germany, and the United Kingdom said the process fulfilled “no credible civilian need.” Development of uranium metal was banned under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal due to its use in the core of a nuclear weapon. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative at indirect U.S.-Iran negotiations in Vienna noted Iran’s breach of the deal on Twitter while offering a reminder that Biden’s failure to lift Trump-era sanctions on Iran also constitutes a breach. Ulyanov said another round of Vienna talks and a full restoration of the deal was the “only way out of this vicious circle.”
Vietnam’s biggest city sees panic-buying over virus lockdown fears (Reuters) Anticipation of stricter movement curbs triggered panic-buying in Vietnam’s economic hub Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, the epicentre of its coronavirus outbreak, while media reported unrest at a city jail where dozens of inmates were infected. The health ministry said outbound travellers from the city of 9 million people would be subjected to a week of quarantine and testing at their destinations, a day after dozens of flights were suspended to control the spread. Shelves at the supermarkets were being emptied since late Tuesday, witnesses said, in preparation for tighter measures, as the country reported more than 1,000 daily coronavirus cases for the first time.
Australia’s largest city Sydney locks down for third week (AP) Sydney’s two-week lockdown has been extended for another week due to the vulnerability of an Australia population largely unvaccinated against COVID-19, officials said on Wednesday. The decision to extend the lockdown through July 16 was made on health advice, state Premier Gladys Berejiklian said. The extension of the lockdown, which covers Australia’s largest city and some nearby communities, means most children will not return to school next week following their midyear break.
Ever Given: Ship that blocked Suez Canal sets sail after deal signed (BBC) A huge container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March—disrupting global trade—is finally leaving the waterway after Egypt signed a compensation deal with its owners and insurers. Witnesses say the Ever Given weighed anchor shortly after 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT) and headed north towards the Mediterranean escorted by tugs. The ship has been impounded for three months near the canal city of Ismailia. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Egypt had demanded $550m (£397m). The vessel, with an Indian crew, is still loaded with about 18,300 containers. It is due to undergo safety checks at Port Said before sailing to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and then to the UK port of Felixstowe where it will offload its containers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Khalid bin Salman Gets Quiet Washington Welcome (Foreign Policy) Prince Khalid bin Salman, the son of Saudi King Salman and brother of Crown Prince Mohammed, meets with State Department officials today on a trip to Washington that the White House would rather not talk about. Prince Khalid’s visit was not publicly announced by either U.S. or Saudi officials, and is the highest profile visit by a Saudi official since the Biden administration declassified an intelligence assessment surrounding the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi hit squad in Istanbul in 2018. On Tuesday he met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. As Saudi Arabia’s deputy defense minister, there is nothing unusual about a representative of a U.S. regional partner meeting with U.S. officials. However, the lack of fanfare underlines the Biden administration’s wariness in dealing with a government that then-candidate Joe Biden promised to treat as a “pariah” for human rights abuses, chief among them the killing of Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and critic of the Saudi government. Biden initially held true to his promise that “America will never again check its principles at the door just to buy oil or sell weapons,” when he announced a pause in proposed weapons sales to the kingdom; the decision will likely be watered down to a suspension in the sale of air-to-ground offensive weaponry.
South Africa’s ex-leader turns himself in for prison term (AP) Former South African president Jacob Zuma turned himself over to police early Thursday to begin serving a 15-month prison term. Just minutes before the midnight deadline for police to arrest him, Zuma left his Nkandla home in a convoy of vehicles. Zuma handed himself over to authorities to obey the country’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, that he should serve a prison term for contempt. Zuma, 79, was ordered to prison for contempt because he defied a court order for him to testify before a judicial commission investigating widespread allegations of corruption during his time as the country’s president, from 2009 to 2018.

Because of the backwards narrative style, the entire second season of American Crime Story has been one big origin story for Andrew Cunanan, his relationships, and the motives that eventually led to his string of murders. The seventh episode, titled “Ascent”, was the episode that we’ve been leading up to all along to fully get a changing point in Andrew’s life.
Last week’s episode (titled “Descent”, in parallels that were evident throughout) was about Andrew losing everything he built for himself. This week we get a peek into how he started putting it together...
Episode 7: “Ascent”
1992, Milan. The episode opens with Donatella Versace, which is always a welcome change. The the further we go back in time, the more the Versace appearances are more thematic tie-ins to Andrew’s journey than a look into their personal lives. But Penelope Cruz in a platinum blonde wig is always a vision to behold.
Donatella is anxious that she can’t seem to design a dress by himself. Gianni can see the potential and talent in his younger sister, and decides to guide her; he proposes they design a dress together. He will show her the ropes. Learning to adapt to your environment will be a big theme of the episode.
We then go to a San Diego pharmacy, where Andrew is working as a cashier. Every week, we see Andrew being stripped more and more of the egocentric, glamorized monster of the first episodes. He’s slightly less delusional, less hurt, less polished; somehow more human, which is reinforces the weird moral statement the show is making out about a murderer.
The Andrew we meet this week is an Andrew that is fueled by dreams. This is something that has always pushed him forward (and what eventually pushed him over the edge), but here we see someone who has yet to accomplish what he set out to do. He’s just a cashier reading a Vogue magazine.
We also see more of the relationship with his mother, who was first introduced last week. In real life, this woman was severely mentally ill, which the show hints at in small, hardly overt ways. We see a tremendous dependency she has not only on her son, but on her son’s success. His value under her eyes is measured on how much he can accomplish.
“You can tell lies, but you either have money or you don’t”, a man at his regular dive bar tells Andrew, perhaps pulling the final trigger inside him to activate him and make him go pursue his dream life. For Andrew, this naturally means to join an escort service. After all, he is well-versed, can carry a conversation, and older guys are keen on him.
The following scene, where Andrew interviews for an escort position, is the only scene so far in the series in which Andrew’s Asian-American identity takes a hard toll on him. “I can’t sell a smartass Filipino,” the escort manager tells him, after she’s asked him to put himself in every box the potential clients might check. “Then I will sell myself.” The idea of not being desired or wanted is something that will chase him for life.
Andrew insinuates himself into the life of Lincoln Ascot, an older millionaire, by charming him and his group of wealthy gays in an opera playhouse. Soon, they have reached an arrangement; he will get monthly allowances, expense credits, and travel benefits, in exchange for redecorating Lincoln’s house and social life. A bargain that benefits both of them.
And then we finally witness the fated encounter between Andrew and David Madson in San Francisco; the night that has been hinted to since David’s introduction in episode four, and that would define the rest of their lives. What starts as Andrew buying a drink for the lonely blond gentlemen at the bar, ends as one of those nights; a night of endless conversation and opening yourself completely. Andrew is hooked. The way Cody Fern portrays David as a wide-eyed dreamer, talking endlessly about his goals, is so much painful and traffic knowing his end. The show has been very effective in highlighting the theme of hope and lost dreams via the backwards narrative.
But Lincoln is not pleased with Andrew taking in new lovers, and breaks off the arrangement. That very same night, he picks up a straight-identified man at a bar, perhaps for the sake of company and drowning his sorrows. But this man, terrified of Lincoln but more terrified at himself, freaks out at the slight touch of Lincoln’s hand, bashes his head, and brutally murders him. “An act of self-defense.” Andrew witnesses this from afar.
While this murder actually took place in reality (and the man later confessed to it to committing it out of gay panic), there is no evidence of Andrew ever being there, but his placement in the room makes for an interesting addition. It allowed Andrew to be a passive bystander for something that he would later commit himself more than once. He would also use this to underline the fatality of not being able to speak up as a gay man against a crime. We all had it coming; it’s always our fault.
Andrew mourns Lincoln with Norman, one of his closest friends and (because we’ve seen last week’s episode), the next man he will be kept under. As they work through their grief on a beach, Andrew offers Norman what he had with Lincoln. A dream that he can build for them.
But he’s not telling his mom he’s become a kept boy. He’s telling her that he’s going after a bigger dream; he’s travelling the world with Gianni Versace as his costuming assistant. His mother assumes that she’s coming along with them. But Andrew has to shed everything from his previous identity, including her. In what has now become the peak trope for selfish behavior, he ends up hurting his own mother, pushing her away and making her fracture her shoulder blade. But she still thinks he’s such a good boy. Andrew cries at this. He will never be a good boy again.
In between Andrew’s titular ascent, segments of the Versaces are peppered throughout. Donatella takes the red carpet spotlight for the first time and becomes a public face for the company. Gianni goes deeper into an illness he will never be cured off, and eventually has to leave Milan for Miami, and Donatella takes over the day-to-day operations. “If we are not talked about, we are nothing,” she says to her new employees after Gianni’s departure. This is another reminder that the Versace’s presence has mostly been used for thematic underlining.
There are two episodes of this season left. According to early critical coverage, next week’s episode we will go back in time one last time, to fully understand Andrew’s life motivation to social climb his way towards murder. And as much as I’ve enjoyed the backwards narrative and the emotional places it takes the audience, I hope the finale puts us back where the premiere left off, with Andrew after the last murder. There needs to be a conclusion to Andrew’s life, as he ended it shortly after.
It’s been a bittersweet journey to explore the lives of people whose fates we already know. I’m enjoying the deep exploration of their characters, but also question them. I get the necessity (and, in a way, the debt) to humanize the victims that have become footnotes in a larger story. I get the necessity of painting the world of prejudice around them, and the decisions that led them to meet and need this man. I thank that we’ve gotten to explores the themes of isolation, longing for connection, and community in the gay sphere that still permeate today. It’s almost a pity, though, that in the way we are also getting a human, almost relatable portrait of a killer. But I guess if there was a way to do it, taking all factors around it into consideration was the way to go.

Detailing Services on a nice car
The moment you drive off the lot whether you own a Mercedes or Hyundai, that car is thought about utilized. As much as cars and truck dealers like to deflect from that 'dreadful used automobile' term, with creative options like Licensed Utilized, or Previously Purchased, you're still handling a used flight. With every mile drive, your Car starts to window tinting near me decline.
Unknown Facts About Car Detailing Shop

Detailing Services on a nice car
Companies like Kelley Blue Book and the National Automotive Dealers Association have actually established a series of requirements that determines depreciation a vehicle. The leading element is the mileage and mechanical condition of the vehicle. Now, there specify guidelines that individual ranking firms use to figure out the value of each year, make, and design of automobile.
For instance, let's presume that two, similar 2015 Ford Mustangs are being traded-in at a car dealership. One of them has 100,000 miles, the other has 50,000 miles. When you average it out, vehicle A has actually put 20,000 miles per year on the vehicle. While the other is half that being available in at 10,000 mile/year average.
At this point, the vehicle is appointed a base value. But this results in the second phase which is mechanical verification. You'll observe that when you sell the vehicle at a dealership, and even utilize a service like Carvana to sell a Car, the trade-in value is settled when it's gotten a mechanical inspection.
However, primary parts such as suspension parts, seals, and fluid conditions can provide the dealership with a general concept of its mechanical condition. At this moment, they identify an expense of repairing issue locations, and deduct from the preliminary vehicle worth. Another important attribute to designating value on a used automobile is its area.
Indicators on Car Detailing Services You Should Know
If the same situation takes place, where you have two similar lorries, in the very same condition, but one in San Diego the other in Omaha, Nebraska the car on the west coast is going to appreciate for a larger sum. The next level of worth is the meat and potatoes of the Car or in this case, the trim alternatives consisted of.
The 2020 Kia Telluride provides 4 Trim Levels. Each has a higher worth when you're ready to sell. Upgrades like including a premium audio system, infotainment display screens, leather interior and such will likewise include a few bucks onto the resale value. Nevertheless, adding aftermarket parts or upgrades like performance suspension, exhaust, and even ceramic finishings or paint protection film might not constantly benefit you.
The FINAL aspect of assigning a car worth, whether it's by means of a trade-in or for personal sale, is the appearance and condition of the outside and interior. This is where detailing a Car and securing the automobile from potential damage enters into play. When you have that final inspection of the Car completed, the mechanic or appraisal manager at a dealership will inspect the paint, chrome or other polished elements, trim, glass, and the interior for signs of damage.
However what's the price benefit? Well, that's the problem. It's more of a basic grade as opposed to particular monetary effect. However, based upon the overall value of a car, the visual appeal of the outside and interior of the vehicle can affect worth approximately 5 to 10%. If the paint is dented up, and needs a lot of repair, this might reduce the value significantly.
All About Automotive Detailing
Including aftermarket upgrades does not constantly include value. This is primarily due to the reality that not all aftermarket parts or particularly, installation approaches are OEM quality. Here is an excellent example. Let's say you own a 2015 Ford Mustang. It's equipped with a 5.0-liter engine, and you include a K&N Filters Consumption, a Borla Sport Exhaust system, and have customized 20-inch chrome wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tires slapped on all four.
How can that be? Well, rather honestly, the dealership has no concept who set up that Intake or Exhaust system. They do not know if you have actually changed Car ignition timing through the ECU, fuel trim, or other crucial aspects. In their eyes, you screwed with the genius of their OEM engineers so why should they reward you with more money? The exact same thing uses to ceramic coverings or other paint protection items.
In vehicle speak it's an unknown variable which does not assist with increasing trade-in worth. As you can see from the info above, the condition of the cars interior or exterior is last on the list of designating value particularly if you're selling the automobile. So, if you're making the decision to information the automobile often simply on keeping your resale worth you're climbing Mt Everest, in the middle of winter, with one hand connected behind your back.

Buying College Essays Is Now Easier Than Ever. But Buyer Beware
As the recent college admissions scandal is shedding light on how parents are cheating and bribing their children’s way into college, schools are also focusing on how some students may be cheating their way through college. Concern is growing about a burgeoning online market that makes it easier than ever for students to buy essays written by others to turn in as their own work. And schools are trying new tools to catch it.
It’s not hard to understand the temptation for students. The pressure is enormous, the stakes are high and, for some, writing at a college level is a huge leap.
“We didn’t really have a format to follow, so I was kind of lost on what to do,” says one college freshman, who struggled recently with an English assignment. One night, when she was feeling particularly overwhelmed, she tweeted her frustration.
“It was like, ‘Someone, please help me write my essay!’ ” she recalls. She ended her tweet with a crying emoji. Within a few minutes, she had a half-dozen offers of help.
“I can write it for you,” they tweeted back. “Send us the prompt!”
The student, who asked that her name not be used for fear of repercussions at school, chose one that asked for $10 per page, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
“For me, it was just that the work was piling up,” she explains. “As soon as I finish some big assignment, I get assigned more things, more homework for math, more homework for English. Some papers have to be six or 10 pages long. … And even though I do my best to manage, the deadlines come closer and closer, and it’s just … the pressure.”
In the cat-and-mouse game of academic cheating, students these days know that if they plagiarize, they’re likely to get caught by computer programs that automatically compare essays against a massive database of other writings. So now, buying an original essay can seem like a good workaround.
“Technically, I don’t think it’s cheating,” the student says. “Because you’re paying someone to write an essay, which they don’t plagiarize, and they write everything on their own.”
Her logic, of course, ignores the question of whether she’s plagiarizing. When pressed, she begins to stammer.
“That’s just a difficult question to answer,” she says. “I don’t know how to feel about that. It’s kind of like a gray area. It’s maybe on the edge, kind of?”
Besides she adds, she probably won’t use all of it.
Other students justify essay buying as the only way to keep up. They figure that everyone is doing it one way or another — whether they’re purchasing help online or getting it from family or friends.
“Oh yeah, collaboration at its finest,” cracks Boston University freshman Grace Saathoff. While she says she would never do it herself, she’s not really fazed by others doing it. She agrees with her friends that it has pretty much become socially acceptable.
“I have a friend who writes essays and sells them,” says Danielle Delafuente, another Boston University freshman. “And my other friend buys them. He’s just like, ‘I can’t handle it. I have five papers at once. I need her to do two of them, and I’ll do the other three.’ It’s a time management thing.”
The war on contract cheating
“It breaks my heart that this is where we’re at,” sighs Ashley Finley, senior adviser to the president for the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She says campuses are abuzz about how to curb the rise in what they call contract cheating. Obviously, students buying essays is not new, but Finley says that what used to be mostly limited to small-scale side hustles has mushroomed on the internet to become a global industry of so-called essay mills. Hard numbers are difficult to come by, but research suggests that up to 16 percent of students have paid someone to do their work and that the number is rising.
“Definitely, this is really getting more and more serious,” Finley says. “It’s part of the brave new world for sure.”
The essay mills market aggressively online, with slickly produced videos inviting students to “Get instant help with your assignment” and imploring them: “Don’t lag behind,” “Join the majority” and “Don’t worry, be happy.”
“They’re very crafty,” says Tricia Bertram Gallant, director of the Academic Integrity Office at the University of California in San Diego and a board member of the International Center for Academic Integrity.
The companies are equally brazen offline — leafleting on campuses, posting flyers in toilet stalls and flying banners over Florida beaches during spring break. Companies have also been known to bait students with emails that look like they’re from official college help centers. And they pay social media influencers to sing the praises of their services, and they post testimonials from people they say are happy customers.
“I hired a service to write my paper and I got a 90 on it!” gloats one. “Save your time, and have extra time to party!” advises another.
“It’s very much a seduction,” says Bertram Gallant. “So you can maybe see why students could get drawn into the contract cheating world.”
YouTube has been cracking down on essay mills; it says it has pulled thousands of videos that violate its policies against promoting dishonest behavior.
But new videos constantly pop up, and their hard sell flies in the face of their small-print warnings that their essays should be used only as a guide, not a final product.
Several essay mills declined or didn’t respond to requests to be interviewed by NPR. But one answered questions by email and offered up one of its writers to explain her role in the company, called EduBirdie.
“Yes, just like the little birdie that’s there to help you in your education,” explains April Short, a former grade school teacher from Australia who’s now based in Philadelphia. She has been writing for a year and a half for the company, which bills itself as a “professional essay writing service for students who can’t even.”
Some students just want some “foundational research” to get started or a little “polish” to finish up, Short says. But the idea that many others may be taking a paper written completely by her and turning it in as their own doesn’t keep her up at night.
“These kids are so time poor,” she says, and they’re “missing out on opportunities of travel and internships because they’re studying and writing papers.” Relieving students of some of that burden, she figures, allows them to become more “well-rounded.”
“I don’t necessarily think that being able to create an essay is going to be a defining factor in a very long career, so it’s not something that bothers me,” says Short. Indeed, she thinks students who hire writers are demonstrating resourcefulness and creativity. “I actually applaud students that look for options to get the job done and get it done well,” she says.
“This just shows you the extent of our ability to rationalize all kinds of bad things we do,” sighs Dan Ariely, professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. The rise in contract cheating is especially worrisome, he says, because when it comes to dishonest behavior, more begets more. As he puts it, it’s not just about “a few bad apples.”
“Instead, what we have is a lot … of blemished apples, and we take our cues for our behavior from the social world around us,” he says. “We know officially what is right and what’s wrong. But really what’s driving our behavior is what we see others around us doing” or, Ariely adds, what we perceive them to be doing. So even the proliferation of advertising for essays mills can have a pernicious effect, he says, by fueling the perception that “everyone’s doing it.”
A few nations have recently proposed or passed laws outlawing essay mills, and more than a dozen U.S. states have laws on the books against them. But prosecuting essay mills, which are often based overseas in Pakistan, Kenya and Ukraine, for example, is complicated. And most educators are loath to criminalize students’ behavior.
“Yes, they’re serious mistakes. They’re egregious mistakes,” says Cath Ellis, an associate dean and integrity officer at the University of New South Wales, where students were among the hundreds alleged to have bought essays in a massive scandal in Australia in 2014.
“But we’re educational institutions,” she adds. “We’ve got to give students the opportunity to learn from these mistakes. That’s our responsibility. And that’s better in our hands than in the hands of the police and the courts.”
Staying one step ahead
In the war on contract cheating, some schools see new technology as their best weapon and their best shot to stay one step ahead of unscrupulous students. The company that makes the Turnitin plagiarism detection software has just upped its game with a new program called Authorship Investigate.
The software first inspects a document’s metadata, like when it was created, by whom it was created and how many times it was reopened and re-edited. Turnitin’s vice president for product management, Bill Loller, says sometimes it’s as simple as looking at the document’s name. Essay mills typically name their documents something like “Order Number 123,” and students have been known to actually submit it that way. “You would be amazed at how frequently that happens,” says Loller.
Using cutting-edge linguistic forensics, the software also evaluates the level of writing and its style.
“Think of it as a writing fingerprint,” Loller says. The software looks at hundreds of telltale characteristics of an essay, like whether the author double spaces after a period or writes with Oxford commas or semicolons. It all gets instantly compared against a student’s other work, and, Loller says, suspicions can be confirmed — or alleviated — in minutes.
“At the end of the day, you get to a really good determination on whether the student wrote what they submitted or not,” he says, “and you get it really quickly.”
Coventry University in the U.K. has been testing out a beta version of the software, and Irene Glendinning, the school’s academic manager for student experience, agrees that the software has the potential to give schools a leg up on cheating students. After the software is officially adopted, “we’ll see a spike in the number of cases we find, and we’ll have a very hard few years,” she says. “But then the message will get through to students that we’ve got the tools now to find these things out.” Then, Glendinning hopes, students might consider contract cheating to be as risky as plagiarizing.
In the meantime, schools are trying to spread the word that buying essays is risky in other ways as well.
Professor Ariely says that when he posed as a student and ordered papers from several companies, much of it was “gibberish” and about a third of it was actually plagiarized.
Even worse, when he complained to the company and demanded his money back, they resorted to blackmail. Still believing him to be a student, the company threatened to tell his school he was cheating. Others say companies have also attempted to shake down students for more money, threatening to rat them out if they didn’t pay up.
The lesson, Ariely says, is “buyer beware.”
But ultimately, experts say, many desperate students may not be deterred by the risks — whether from shady businesses or from new technology.
Bertram Gallant, of UC San Diego, says the right way to dissuade students from buying essays is to remind them why it’s wrong.
“If we engage in a technological arms race with the students, we won’t win,” she says. “What are we going to do when Google glasses start to look like regular glasses and a student wears them into an exam? Are we going to tell them they can’t wear their glasses because we’re afraid they might be sending the exam out to someone else who is sending them back the answers?”
The solution, Bertram Gallant says, has to be about “creating a culture where integrity and ethics matter” and where education is valued more than grades. Only then will students believe that cheating on essays is only cheating themselves.
