The Myth of Sustainable Fashion by Kenneth P. Pucker

New business models including recycling, resale, rental, reuse, and repair are sold as environmental life savers.

The sad truth however is that all this experimentation and supposed “innovation” in the fashion industry over the past 25 years have failed to lessen its planetary impact — a loud wake up call for those who hope that voluntary efforts can successfully address climate change and other major challenges facing society.

Take the production of shirts and shoes, which has more than doubled in the past quarter century — three quarters end up burned or buried in landfills. This feels like a personal failure of sorts.

Pressure for unrelenting growth summed with consumer demand for cheap, fast fashion have been a major contributors. So too are the related facts that real prices for footwear and apparel have halved since 1990 with most new items made from non-biodegradable petroleum-based synthetics.

Because it is hard to make a better performing or more efficient blouse, handbag, or pair of socks, to motivate consumption, the industry pushes change. Not better — just different, cheaper, or faster.

Notwithstanding improvements in technology and communications, predicting demand across tens of styles that are launched seasonally is much easier than doing the same for thousands of styles released monthly. Therefore, fashion inventories inevitably accumulate, and 40% of fashion goods are sold at a markdown. “The urge to sell more and get consumers to buy more is still in the DNA of the industry,” says Michael Stanley-Jones, co-secretary for the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion. “Clothes have a very short life span and end up in the dump.”

Selling tops for $7, dresses for $12 and jeans for $17, Shein makes Zara and H&M look expensive and slow. To deliver on low price points for fast changing styles, these “real time” brands rely on fossil fuel-based synthetic materials that are cheaper, adaptable, and more widely available than natural materials. As a result, polyester has grown to become the number one synthetic fiber and now represents more than half of all global fiber production.

Innovators are now fermenting and growing bio-based substitutes for conventional livestock derived materials (e.g., leather) and fossil fuel-based synthetics (e.g., polyester). Some of these new bio-based textiles can be engineered to deliver performance features alongside properties such as biodegradability. Unfortunately, these innovations are plagued by high initial costs (relative to well-established alternatives that benefit from scale economies), large requirements for capital (to fund new production sites), resistance to change, and the lack of pricing for externalities (that allow fossil fuel-derived alternatives to be priced to exclude their true social costs).

Retire “Sustainability”: Less unsustainable is not sustainable. To their credit, Patagonia no longer uses the term. At the same time, fashion companies should not be allowed to simultaneously profess their commitment to sustainability, while opposing regulatory proposals that deliver the same end.

So, let’s just say the dominant ideologues out there aren’t flipping your wig. You say it’s because you think the parties are the same, equally corrupt, etc, and that you’d like to see a 3rd party. In reality, of course, most of what you’re really saying is “look at meeeeee, sheeple!”

A couple of points of order:

1. Everyone thinks they are the sole conscious human in world full of “sheeple”. This is the same sort of egomania that makes people think they are the Main Character. In both cases, everyone is WRONG.

2. Everyone assumes that a 3rd party would be the one that represents their interests. Again, not going to happen, both because the people hollering about it are crazier than a shit house rat, and because any party with a high enough profi le to get elected has already been bought and sold by the same people that own the existing parties. Given that, why would “THEY” pay for three parties when you get the illusion of choice with two? You will notice that the Green Party and the Reform Party mysteriously flew to pieces when they become large enough to show up on the ballot.

Not that either of these points will stop or even slow down your average libertarian. This is because the average libertarian has no motives in actually being successful in raising a party. No, the average libertarian is out to score with chicks, and can’t figure out why it isn’t working, no matter how much he talks about Going Galt.

(Hint: It’s because being a radical only works on women if you’re a radical leftist, and only then for a very narrow window. Radical rightists are boring.)

For the rest of us, of course, this state of affairs is hilarious.

Is there anything funnier than a man making a great big show of reading Atlas Shrugged at Starbucks, quite obviously wondering why none of the women in the shop have chatted him up?

But the funniest thing about 3rd party people is that they invariably turn into conspiracy freaks. Chemtrails, HAARP, 911 Truthers, FEMA camps, etc. I think this has to do with the fact that when you make yourself believe one great whacking lie (the existence of a “free market”, etc), it’s suddenly easier to believe just about anything. So you go to parties and tell everyone about the danger they’re in, until it gradually dawns on you one day that none of your friends seem to throw parties anymore. Silly sheeple. From there, it’s usually an alcohol-fueled ride to Crazytown, population YOU.

I gotta say, it must be rough, living in a universe in which your flawless ideology, whether that be communism or unrestrained capitalism, doesn’t work even though it makes perfect sense to you, and OUGHT TO WORK and WOULD WORK, if only people weren’t such sheeple.

But it doesn’t work, does it? And yet here you are, trying to explain to it people for the umpteenth time.

Rinse, repeat.

Last week after after much looking I finally bought a car I’ve wanted since seeing one on my town green, an 07 Lotus Exige S. It has been heavily modified by previous owners and is fairly well sorted all around.

I picked the car up in Fort Meyers Florida and drove it ~600 miles home to Atlanta with a friend from work. I would not recommend a trip over 4 or so hours, and would recommend ear plugs. Conversation is possible at highway speeds but you definitely have to speak quite loudly. The ride is extremely stiff but honestly not as bad as I thought it could be. All in all the car is a joy to drive, very much like a slightly over sized go kart. The perfect weekend toy/track weapon. The car has a slightly bouncy idle (I think the idle air control cave needs to be cleaned) but all in all no issues thus far.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 Beta Branch is available to try and test out

1.45 Open Beta is now live for Euro Truck Simulator 2 on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the work and development of SCS Software. Available to owners on Steam and Humble Store. The 1.45 Open Beta branch for Euro Truck Simulator 2 is now available to try and test out. Including support for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Having personally tested the Linux build myself. Due note, that this Beta branch has been released earlier than usual. It is also a work in progress Linux build that contains known issues and bugs. If you plan on taking part in this Open Beta, help SCS by reporting any bugs you may encounter. Doing so in the appropriate section(s) of the games the official forums.

So, what does the 1.45 Open Beta has in store?

If you wish to take part in the open beta. You can find this version in the public_beta branch on Steam. The way to access it is as follows: Steam client → LIBRARY → right-click on Euro Truck Simulator 2. Then click → Properties → Betas tab → public_beta → 1.45 Open Beta. No password required. You might have to restart your Steam client to see the correct branch name there.

Hannover Rework

The city of Hannover has been given a fresh look and has been completely reworked for 1.45 Open Beta. Similar to the Austria rework, SCS have more or less deleted the entire city and started from scratch. The city circle has been moved, while keeping as much from it as possible. That’s not the case with the city center and southern part. Since these areas now feature a completely different layout with a new economy. Which also consists of some unique depots in the world of Euro Truck Simulator 2. One of the most unique areas arriving in this game rework will be the very famous Hannover Messe. Since it is one of the world’s largest trade halls. And also one of our biggest tests in 1.45 Open Beta. Due to the fact that the additional part is almost a 1:1 scale. Dedicated to the topic of industry development, trucks and trailers. That always take the spotlight during the IAA event. Which is an exhibition for commercial vehicles. As well as a chance for brands to showcase their constant tech advancements and evolution. Perhaps this area might come in handy later this year. Ownable Tank Trailers via 1.45 Open Beta

There is also a long-awaited addition coming to the selection of purchasable trailers - ownable cisterns! For now, there are two different types of tank trailers to the games. Fuel Tanks and Silos (Dry Bulk trailers). Both types will have different customizations and use. And don’t worry, there are plans to bring more versions of this trailer in the future. The fuel cisterns in Euro Truck Simulator 2 are for transport of combustible liquids. For silos, you will be able to deliver a number of bulk materials with them. Such as, sand, concrete, or grain. Tank Trailers will feature a selection of 4 connection types (Single, Double, B-double, HCT). 1.45 Open Beta will see you hauling these new cistern trailers in your company. Krone Trailers Pack DLC Update

Owners of the Krone Trailer Pack DLC will receive two new trailers. Doing so as part of a free update in 1.45 Open Beta. The new Profi Liner Building trailer, and the Paper Liner trailer. These new three-axle trailers will both come with lift axles. So what can be hauled with these new trailers? The Krone Paper Liner curtain sider trailer is used. Due to haul standard cargo and Krone's updated Profi Liner Building Material. The drop side trailer allows drivers to transport goods. Such as seed bags, fertilizer, plant substrate, outdoor floor tiles, roof tiles, and bricks. You will also find a new freight market cargo for the Boxliner. Which consists of two stacked box liner chassis for hauling! Both trailers also come with optional accessories. Including original Krone paint jobs, side skirts, pallet boxes, tire stores, and bumpers. This 1.45 Open Beta update also includes five new Krone accessories for your cabin. Including cute bear and truck toys. but that's not all. SCS are working closely with the fantastic team at Krone. Due to bring you an accurate representation of the Krone production plant in game. But virtually in Euro Truck Simulator 2. Drivers who own the Krone Trailers Pack DLC will have the opportunity to deliver parts. Doing so to and from the factory. As well as deliver brand new trailers from the Krone Trailer Point. And within the production plant where they are rolled off the line. Custom City Intros for Austria & Hanover

1.45 Open Beta brings a new experimental feature. Introducing it to players during the Open Beta is custom city introductions. These special cutscenes will appear when a player selects a starting city. When creating a new profile. For now, these custom city introductions will only be shown for cities in Austria,. As well as the city of Hanover in Germany. Your feedback on this new feature is welcome. Due to gauge opinions if you believe this would be an interesting new addition for new players to see. Be sure to use the official forums, your comments are appreciated.

Optional Mods Support for Convoy

One feature being worked on in the 1.45 Open Beta is for a Convoy. Which is the in-game multiplayer, yet to be tested on Linux. But does offer support for missing modifications. Some Linux players do play with third-party game modifications created by the community. But not everyone would like to download all the required modifications to join a friends' convoy session. Players can join Convoy sessions without the need to have all of the required modifications of the host's session. There will be options to opt-in, both on the server's and client's side. Due to enable this if you choose to use this. In most cases, the session will not display the modification that is missing. However in some cases, such as if a player is using a vehicle that you do not have. This will show as a coloured placeholder box in 1.45 Open Beta that replicates its size. If you are a game modder, please note that your modification must be tagged as "mp_mod_optional". So that it can be recognised as a MOD that can be ignored by a convoy server. That allows for missing optional MODs.

Rain Sensor in 1.45 Open Beta

When traveling on the road for a while, you are bound to come across a bit of rain. Whether it's just a short passing rain shower or a full on storm. It's important for drivers to stay safe in 1.45 Open Beta. All while driving on the road during variable weather conditions. One of the more common safety features found on vehicles today is Rain Sensors! This tech does exactly what it says on the box, it detects the density of the rain. While in turn, adjusts the speed of the wipers for you. This feature is active when you set the wipers of your vehicle to the first position. This new feature will be available as an option. One that you can choose to enable on the settings page.

Option to hide inaccessible road markers

Another new UI option that we are introducing in this 1.45 Open Beta update. The ability to show or hide the X markers which mark inaccessible/undriveable roads for the player. This new option may make the game feel more immersive for some drivers. However, players should take care and follow the correct route. Hilti Announces New Wearable Exoskeleton for Tradespeople

Heavy lifting, exhausting overhead work, and awkward positions are just some of the perks of working in construction, but they can also lead to chronic back and shoulder pain for many later in life. One technology that I’ve been following pretty closely in the past few years has been exoskeletons, which promise to alleviate at least some of those problems. At a recent press event, Hilti has thrown their hat into the ring with an exoskeleton announcement of their own.

The Hilti EXO-01 wearable exoskeleton provides relief for work performed at shoulder level and overhead by transferring weight from the arms of the wearer to their hips. The 4-pound device includes shoulder and waist straps, as well as forearm supports. The company states that internal and external research has shown that the exoskeleton can reduce the peak load on muscles and shoulders by up to 47 percent.

Like some other exoskeletons in the marketplace, the EXO-01 does not require external power to provide the support. The weight is transferred from the arms to the hips using a mechanical cable pulling technology.

To develop the technology, Hilti has partnered with Ottobuck, a prosthetics, orthotics, and exoskeleton provider.

“Exoskeletons are an important trend having great relevance for us. They provide relief for physically demanding tasks, such as those performed on construction sites every day. In Ottobock we have the ideal partner to combine our user protection and ergonomics knowledge with 100 years of biomechanical expertise. Our technology partnership will serve as the basis for the development of additional innovative and customer-oriented systems,” explains Johannes Wilfried Huber, Head of Hilti’s Diamond Systems Business Unit, in a press release.

Hilti has made it clear that this is only their first step in providing human augmentation devices and that there will be more to come in the future. In addition to releasing hardware, the company also plans to follow up the rollout with implementation, training, and support services for their customers.

The EXO-01 is expected to launch in the fall of 2020, but pricing has not yet been announced.

"Our innovations have always been fueled by our deep understanding of our customers' challenges and needs, so it's only natural that we can drive innovation with solutions for human augmentation and jobsite automation," said Rafael Garcia, Senior VP and CMO of Hilti North America. "Human augmentation and jobsite automation innovations, alone or combined, will create productivity gains the likes of which haven't been seen since cordless tools got a foothold in commercial construction."

Hilti has been a unique driver of innovation in the tool industry in recent years and the company has been busy investing in startups and other outside-the-box technologies to support the commercial construction industry.

Earlier this year, Hilti acquired Concrete Sensors, an appropriately names concrete maturity sensor company. The company has also developed ON!Track, for asset tracking; PROFIS Engineering, for designing baseplates; PLT 300, for bringing BIM designs to the field; and TraceFast, which are their traceable fasteners that were announced earlier this year at the World of Concrete.

The answer is simple; it is pre-established. To counter the issue of currency devaluation, ‘Bitcoin’ mining was designed in such a way that a total of 21 million coins would ever be issued, which is achieved by cutting the reward given to miners in half every 4 years. Therefore, it is an essential element of ‘Bitcoin’s existence and not a decision. Acknowledging the occurrence of the halving is one thing, but evaluating the ‘repercussion’ is an entirely different thing. People, who are familiar with the economic theory, will know that either supply of ‘Bitcoin’ will reduce as miners shut down operations or the supply restriction will move the price up, which will make the continued operations profitable. It is important to know which one of the two phenomena will occur, or what will the ratio be if both happen at the same time. There is no central recording system in ‘Bitcoin,’ as it is built on a distributed ledger system. Although, it would not automatically occur if a ‘Miner’ gets a control of 51 percent of the issuance, yet, it could happen if such situation arises. It means that whoever gets to control 51 percent can either exploit the records or steal all of the ‘Bitcoin.’ However, it should be understood that if the halving happens without a respective increase in price and we get close to 51 percent situation, confidence in ‘Bitcoin’ would get affected. It doesn’t mean that the value of ‘Bitcoin,’ i.e., its rate of exchange against other currencies, must double within 24 hours when halving occurs. At least partial improvement in ‘BTC’/USD this year is down to purchasing in anticipation of the event. So, some of the increase in price is already priced in. Moreover, the effects are expected to be spread out. These include a small loss of production and some initial improvement in price, with the track clear for a sustainable increase in price over a period. This is exactly what happened in 2012 after the last halving. However, the element of risk persists here because ‘Bitcoin’ was in an entirely different place then as compared to where it is now. ‘Bitcoin’/USD was around $12.50 in 2012 right before the halving occurred, and it was easier to mine coins. The electricity and computing power required was relatively small, which means it is hard to reach 51 percent control as there were little or no barriers to entry for the miners and the dropouts could be instantly replaced. On the contrary, with ‘Bitcoin’/USD at over $670 now and no possibility of mining from home anymore, it might happen, but according to a few calculations, it would still be a cost prohibitive attempt. Nevertheless, there might be a “bad actor” who would initiate an attack out of motivations other than monetary gain.
