Hi everyone I’m sorry I haven’t updated as much as I planned, but I thought I’d share pics of how everything’s going in my garden (6/23/24)
The tomatoes have exploded and there’s lots of flowers. I’m hoping it’s not too hot and we actually get fruit this year (last year got so hot our tomatoes didn’t even flower during the normal growing season).
Next is the corn, which are also doing really well. It’s the sweet corn variety. Funny story, I planted the corn seeds without knowing you kind of need a lot to get a good crop because it’s wind pollinated. However, we have about 10 mature stalks and I’m hoping to get at least a small harvest. A few of the stalks are taller than me (5’3”/160cm) and one of the ears growing already has silk growing out of the ear.
Next are the cucumbers. One of the plants has a few eggs on the bottoms of the leaves so I used some Sevin dust. I’m hesitant to use neem oil because I’ve noticed lots of ladybugs in the garden and don’t wanna kill them.
The carrots are doing well after being transplanted. Unfortunately I don’t remember when I started the seeds so I’m not sure if they should be farther along by now (I believe I planted around late April/early May—late for seeds I know but I’ve got a long growing season and few frosts).
The various fruit trees/bushes/shrubs are doing well. Pictured are a thorny blackberry vine, an olive tree, a papaya tree, and a babcock peach tree. Everything is doing amazing. The blackberry is producing, the 4 peaches are growing and changing color while the olive, fig and papaya have been putting in some major growth/establishing.
Last is the melon patch. It’s also exploded and there are so many watermelons throughout the whole patch of varying sizes from bb-sized to the one pictured with my hand. I didn’t see any cantaloupe yet, but there’s lots of flowers. I haven’t actually gone into the patch due to how crowded it is (I’m hoping if we do get some we’d be able to see them when they get big enough). I’m estimating we have between 12-15 watermelon at least so far.
However, not everything is doing so well. The rabbits have been so destructive, they killed my producing pole bean, the peppers I transplanted into the ground and most of the radishes, leaving 2 left for us (I did start new seeds though because radishes are some of the quickest vegetables you can grow from seed to harvest).
For things I didn’t cover like the grapes, blueberries, raspberries, guava trees, the apple tree, the lemon tree, various flowers, onions, potatoes, and pineapples, they are all doing good as well. I also wanna add that I did start new bush beans/pole beans as well as various kinds of peppers (jalapeños, hot salsa blend peppers, golden bell peppers) in containers to make up for the ones that got chewed. Hopefully those will make a nice fall harvest. The potatoes are almost ready to be harvested and the blueberries and raspberries have had berries ripen one at a time due to how small they are (this is the first year for berries).
As for other things I have planned, I have a few art pieces I’d like to post if that’s something y’all are interested in. I also would love to talk about my experience with gardening and mental health but any and all posts related to that will be labeled with appropriate trigger warnings.
Thanks for all the support with likes/reblogs. Feel free to come lurk, talk, vent, ask, whatever. I just wanna inspire others that think they cannot grow things that they can. If you’d like to talk I mostly would like to talk about gardening/plants/mental health and how it impacts us as humans.
Happy growing🌱🌿💙

hey does anyone know if there's any way to reap generously without sowing generously? i'd really like to reap generously but idk i kinda feel like it would be easier to sow sparingly lol
#i know i have to make an effort to see the fruits of my labor but i dont wanna!!!!#also im irl ordering crops for spring rn 🤣#and im being thrifty and cheap by ordering the smaller trees bc they're easier to plant and im broke rn lol#even tbo im wondering if i should also get 100 of the bigger ones they were so hard to plant last year 😖#but they look amazing this year ngl#anyway certified farmer post#this has been a shitpost#its not really a big deal bc i was advised to go w the smaller ones by a more experienced farmer due to the rocky soil#and he's right#but i want the immediate rewards of watching my trees get big faster :)#lol#also we keep sowing clover seed and its not really taking over the field as hoped so i need to order more and do tbat in the spring too#alas#fourth times the charm

I WAS overwintering these pink lady apple seeds for the late winter planting, but they decided to sprout in the fridge.
They were all in that iceream container, and I split them up last night. I'll probably lose a couple within the next few weeks, but they'll be inside pretty much all fall and winter.
I do have a grow lamp for them, too, so with the short days coming, I'll leave it on a couple hours for them.

jumping and dancing around every time i successfully code a new function. the tangible feedback of gamedev is so much better than other programming i've done, being able to see my changes in real time makes me go WAOW!!!!
#evander makes a video game#im working on chao fruit trees right now and i've completed step one which is making a seed you can pickup#i'm learning about groups resources and singletons in godot rn#i love how modular godot is#being able to make these things in bits and pieces is making it easier and a lot more fun

There was a good-sized stand of pawpaw trees down by the branch at the new nature preserve. Sadly, not even the largest ones had any developing fruit on them. I think most of our wild patches are too far apart to effectively pollinate each other.
#pawpaw trees#native plants#asimina#asimina triloba#edible plants#fruit trees#my attempts to start some from seed this year failed#i'll have to try again - or ask that pawpaw farmer if I can dig up some of the seedlings I saw by their packing house

just had the best most delicious mango i’ve ever eaten in my life. it was so good that i felt sad after i finished it like damn.. gone too soon. but then i looked up how to plant a mango seed on youtube and now i’ve got a mango seed germinating in a little plastic baggie on my windowsill and maybe hopefully in 5-6 years i’ll be eating the second best mango ever
#altho idk i guess the accomplishment of growing a mango tree from seed and taking care of it to the point of bearing fruit would definitely#make the mangos that grow on that tree the best so that would makes today’s mango second best?#i think i can do it

so idk if i mentioned this but i got really into gardening this year. i've wanted to grow my own vegetables ever since i was a kid and now i have a garden i can actually do it. so i went all out. i grew tomatoes and strawberries and courgettes and peppers (they didn't go so well, wrong climate) and i spent weeks digging up the bamboo that the former owners planted (top tip: NEVER PLANT FUCKING BAMBOO, IT'S THE DEVIL'S PLANT) so i would have more room to grow things and it was SO FUN going out and picking my own food straight out of the garden, being like 'hmm i kinda feel like lettuce' and then just. going and grabbing some from the garden. AMAZING!!!
anyways then i went on holiday for two weeks and my family did not really take care of my garden while i was gone (fair, not their job) and the wind trashed my plants so i kinda lost enthusiasm cos it was all wrecked, and then all my tomatoes got a disease due to irregular watering because i couldn't be bothered going out there to water them every night, and THEN it was winter. so i lost interest and now i only go out into the garden to put potato peelings in the compost bin
and i was sat here like damn, i really hope that gardening wasn't just a short-lived obsession because it's easily one of the coolest hobbies i've had and also gets me away from the Horrors, aka, screens and the internet, and also let's be real, i spent way too much money on compost and plant pots, so it'd really suck if i never do that again, especially because everyone says the first year you grow your own food it's not really helpful financially cos all the supplies cost so much, it's only when you've been doing it for a year or two and figure shit out and don't have to start from scratch that it starts saving you money. so like. it would be nice to actually reap some financial benefits of what was a very expensive hobby lmao. (i bought OVER TWO HUNDRED LITRES OF COMPOST. IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT'S REALLY NOT, ESPECIALLY WHEN MOST OF YOUR GARDEN IS PATIO SO YOU HAVE TO GROW EVERYTHING IN CONTAINERS)
ANYWAY tl;dr the switch flipped in my brain again and i spent an hour today looking up different kinds of runner bean. there's a variety called firestorm, so obviously i'm gonna have to try and grow that. and i'm mentally planning out everything i'm gonna grow and now i'm chewing on the bars of my enclosure cos i can't start growing anything until april >:( boooooo
#i also really wanna grow different kinds of tomato#i had 8 cherry tomato plants this summer and it was GREAT. i never had to buy tomatoes. which was useful cos i eat a lot of them#but i wanna branch out (pun absolutely intended) and grow some of the cool-looking ones#i found some black ones. emo tomatoes!! i wanna grow them so bad!!#and i wanna see if my strawberries are more productive this year cos apparently they don't do much in their first year#i'm excited to try beans cos i've not tried those yet. and hopefully my peppers will do better this year...#and i'm also gonna try companion planting and weave some flowers in among it all for the pollinators!! I'M SO HYPED#i'm also gonna try and grow some more fruit this year cos that shit is EXPENSIVE#i'm not gonna do that from seed though. i'm gonna buy a couple of fruit trees. you can get raspberry bushes that are designed to grow in#pots. same with blueberries. my friend is gonna get me a blueberry bush for christmas!! so i just need to get the compost. they need acidic#soil. GAHHHH I CAN'T WAIT#pls brain. don't let this obsession die by the time i can actually get out there and grow things

It's the start of harvest season over at our place. We got the last of the Shiro Plums yesterday and I think we ended up with a haul of 90-100 pounds of fruit.
That is the same basket being filled 5 times total, dumping out the fruit into paper bags after.
And look at the prime juicy ones we have already separated out!
And here is a little video of me breaking an unripened one to show how juicy they are anyways, before feeding it to our pup (no waste here!)
(by the way I love this dress, even if I maybe got it caught once or twice in the branches 😅)
We've even already made our first good trade on these things. Swapped 20 pounds of fruit for 25 pounds of freshly butchered pork!
Overall I'm really excited for harvest season at our new place. With 22 fruit trees on property and so many people already interested in trading or even paying for the fruits I'm very excited to make more community connections and stock up for a few months.
Now to just find a recipe for good jam using these things 💙
(decided while doing the tags I'm gonna start tagging these with: lesbian island life)
#fruit trees#Shiro Plums#love these things#they are sweet almost like an apricot#but with a smaller seed#we've been eating a load of fhe little guys for days now#lesbian island life#oooooooh i like that tag. im gonna keep using it

Tea Time: Kentucky Coffeetree
Learning to identify Kentucky coffeetree in the winter brings you one step closer to making a coffee-like (albeit caffeine-free) beverage from its seeds. Humans have a long history of occasionally using the “beans” of Gymnocladus dioicus to make this tisane, which explains common names like coffeetree, American coffee berry, and coffeenut. The process is a bit time consuming, and the end result…
