Having watched it as children, Amy and Gabby's mostly just remember how sad it was. Now they revisit the '90s classic with adult eyes and find both its charm and its shortcomings readily apparent.

Pride Month -Fried Green Tomatoes 1991

Though the film leaves the relationship um...ambiguous, this food fight is their "love scene" per the DVD commentary apparently. I'd argue there was nothing ambiguous about the way that Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker played the roles tbh.

Some of the quotes are from the book, which while it never uses the word lesbian, makes it clear how they feel about each other and that Ruth and Idgie are a couple in the eyes of everyone and their mama.

Also, while the movie is great( I mean damn if I don’t have a crush on both Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker and the idea of them playing girlfriends? Dream come true) the book is just generally fantastic.

DNF: Hell Followed with Us by Andrew Joseph White

*thinks despairingly about the year wrap-up* UM, December, right! Bad news first: I hated reading this month’s book club choice so much that I quit, but the two other people at the meeting liked it and I immediately read two other books, so I’m refusing to feel bad about it. Ahem. But overall a very good month - there was a lot of 20s-50s historical fiction, which I didn’t plan at all, but the only part I’d call a mistake was reading two different 1920s m/m historical fantasy mysteries at the same time lol. The Charm Offensive was a really fun break though, even if I hate reality TV. And to round it out: bless Victoria Goddard for unexpectedly dropping a new seasonal short ft. my favorite boys, may Lev AC Rosen give us more queer mid century detective fiction, and thank you Foz Meadows for giving me a book that feels like I could have read growing up, but came out in 2016.
