Actress Jennifer Esposito bravely opened up about a dark chapter in her early Hollywood career, revealing how a "Harvey Weinstein-esque" producer nearly derailed her dreams. This incident highlights the power dynamics present in the entertainment industry and the devastating impact such abuse can have on aspiring actors. Let's delve deeper into Esposito's story, exploring the details of her experience and its lasting effects. Jennifer Esposito Recalls A Brutal Encounter: A Producer's Unjust Actions In a recent episode of the "She Pivots" podcast, Esposito detailed a harrowing experience with a powerful and ruthless producer. While she refrained from naming the individual, her description paints a clear picture of abuse: Unjustified Firing: Esposito recounted being fired from a project "for no reason" at the young age of 26. This abrupt termination suggests the producer's decision was based on personal motives rather than her performance. Blacklisting Attempts: Esposito further alleges the producer actively sabotaged her career by attempting to blacklist her. This tactic involved discouraging other studios and production companies from hiring her. False Smear Campaign: The producer allegedly resorted to spreading fabricated stories about her, labeling her a "drug addict" who locked herself in trailers. These lies were damaging to her reputation and further hampered her ability to secure jobs. Loss of Representation and a Struggling Career The producer's actions had a devastating ripple effect on Esposito's career: Loss of Agency Representation: Esposito claimed her talent agency dropped her, suggesting they were either pressured by the producer or unwilling to challenge his influence. Two and a Half Years of Unemployment: Without an agent or manager, Esposito was locked out of opportunities for an extended period. This highlights the importance of representation in the film industry, particularly for navigating challenging situations. A Painful Time and a Catalyst for Change Looking back, Esposito described the experience as a "really, really painful time." It robbed her of the momentum she had built and threatened to extinguish her dream: Dreams Crushed: Esposito emphasizes the producer's actions took away something she'd passionately pursued since childhood. This incident underscores the emotional toll of abuse in the entertainment industry. A Turning Point: However, this adversity also fueled a desire for creative control. Esposito eventually wrote, directed, and starred in her film, "Fresh Kills," which she describes as a project for the "26-year-old kid who got slaughtered." Fresh Kills: A Story of Resilience "Fresh Kills," released in June 2024, marks Esposito's directorial debut. This film can be interpreted as a powerful expression of overcoming adversity: Reclaiming the Narrative: By writing and directing "Fresh Kills," Esposito takes ownership of her story and narrative. This film can be seen as a testament to her resilience and determination. A Creative Outlet: Esposito's experience with the abusive producer fueled her creative fire, pushing her to explore new artistic endeavors beyond acting. Esposito's story sheds light on the dark side of the entertainment industry and the power imbalances that often exist. It also serves as an inspiration, demonstrating how perseverance and artistic expression can lead to personal and professional growth. The #MeToo Movement and a Call for Change Esposito's experience, while disturbing, reflects a larger pattern of abuse faced by many in Hollywood. The rise of the #MeToo movement has brought these issues to light, highlighting the need for: Increased Accountability: The entertainment industry needs to hold individuals with power accountable for their actions. Stricter enforcement of policies against harassment and abuse is crucial. Stronger Support Systems: Aspiring actors and actresses need access to resources and support systems that empower them to speak up against abuse. Shifting the Power Dynamics: A conscious effort towards creating a more equitable and transparent industry is essential. Esposito's story serves as a call to action, encouraging the entertainment industry to create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.

I was just thinking of the scene in Eclipse where Leafpool and Jaypaw discuss it, so I was wondering, what do the Clans think of euthanasia? In canon ShadowClan does it but ThunderClan thinks StarClan decides when a cat would die and I was wondering how you would handle this in your rewrite.
Every time it comes up in canon, it gives me less confidence that it has any place in my rewrite tbh
(CW: Animal death, convulsions, poisoning, Sagewhisker generally being a horrible person, euthanasia, what you'd expect from this convo really)
We're told it's only used to "save a cat from a lingering death" but in-canon it's been actively considered four times that I can remember;
Sagewhisker implying Yellowfang could kill her unwanted children (sincerely sagewhisker what the fuck)
Cloudpelt's injury as an apprentice (why is sagewhisker so horrible?!)
Brokenstar, of course
Hollyleaf telling Leafpool to kill herself
All of these times were loathsome! If anything it looks more like it's considered out of spite or convenience, not once has it ever come up as real mercy.
And we HAVE seen what death by yew berries looks like in comparison; Brokenstar went into convulsions and Sorrelkit, a small child who should have logically been killed quickly based on how much she ate, suffered in agony and survived.
Thankfully Cinderpelt was able to get yarrow into her almost immediately so she threw it up, but it still suggests these aren't as "quick and painless" as the medicine cats imply. Every time we've seen a deathberry poisoning on-screen, it's painful and traumatic.
(And deathberries are even worse in my rewrite, since Bonefall Sorreltail walks away from this with lasting neurological damage.)
So the logistics of poisoning aside, it's like... why even keep it, y'know? Sure as a writer I could make deathberry poisoning less painful, and there are more types of illness now that could warrant euthanasia consideration (like Hazeltail's accidental hyperthyroidism), but, I'm rewriting the Clans into a culture where the scars you earn from hard-fought battles are a point of pride.
Why would the clans want to take that from a warrior? The chance to fight and win their lives? Philosophically speaking, could that not be considered breaking the Right of Challenge?
I'm sure it does happen occasionally though, and a medicine cat euthanizes a suffering warrior... secretly. Euthanasia and other types of poisonings are the sort of skill taught by Dark Forest medics, not casually passed from mentor to apprentice.
No more "ShadowClan is the evil Clan so they're more Morally Ambiguous than everyone else" stuff
Yellowfang probably picked it up from Runningnose's killing of Marigoldkit, or simply realized it would be an easy way to secretly end his life. She's smart enough to just have that idea on her own, really.
Yew berries might be used to kill foxes and problem corvids though, particularly ones that start stealing and are too crafty to catch.

posting the freshkillic flag I made bc I haven't been able to find a flag for it at ALL but I'm like severely attached to the label/gender lol.
definition for freshkillic is "A gender related to recent death, gore, feeling at one with nature, accepting a part in the cycle of life." <3 sadly have no clue who coined it (I've looked extensively and came up bunk) but I'm still very much in love w the term so. meh.

do you thing some sort of mouth-operated sling would work as a weapon...? im picturing a strip of woven grass with a rock that one would hold in the mouth and whip the neck to launch, idk if this is feasible At All but the mental image is funny enough to offer up
I'll be ruling against most mouth-based weapons, particularly ones that require the cat to whip their neck around. It wouldn't be possible to take aim or keep an eye on the target like that
A stationary ground slingshot wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, especially considering WindClan is set up on hills which would be a prime place to see ranged weapons like that. Still... it's a bit far from warriors. I'm not sure if I'll ever cover something like that.
But hey, if you'd like to take the idea of a simple trebuchet or turret and run with it, it's feasible for a FanClan with some woodworking skills.
