Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors

Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?

What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.

Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.

Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.

I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!

I came across BoB only last year (thanks Netflix the best thing you have done to me) hence 22 years late. I wish I had done it earlier (I definitely heard about the title, maybe in the 2000s, but I was too young at the time to take interests in it and I forgot about it), but because of it there are already a lot of resources and materials (and numerous fanfics) to dig into. Re the symposium, I love some of the trivia stories the cast shared, like when some replacement guy (I remembered it's Rene Moreno who played Ramirez but my memory could be fuzzy) were having dinner with the OG Easy men at this posh restaurant after shooting. Someone asked Moreno what he did today and he said he cut his hair and got to shoot the gun something like that, and Neal McDonough (Compton) asked him to drop and gave him 20, Moreno looked at Ron Livingston for help, who he thought was the only normal person at the table, but Ron was like yeah you had to do it, and so he dropped and did 20 push-ups and startled the waitress and other customers.

The other interesting episode is that when they were shooting for the river crossing scene in Ep 8, a replacement guy (Ramirez or Hashey?) who wasn't in the bootcamp and wasn't that immersed, jokingly told Dexter Fletcher (Martin) to fuck off, everyone went quiet like how dare you say to that to the officer, and Ross McCall (Liebgott) asked, "Permission to throw him off the boat, sir," Fletcher said let him think about it. They didn't throw him off the boat but I find the comparison between those who went to the bootcamp vs. those didn't and thus didn't have a clue is so interesting. Oh, and Matthew Settle still scared the other cast and staff because Speirs is so scary lol.

Review: I’ve read Brennan’s previous book, Brennan’s War shortly after it was published in 1985. A lot of what was in it stuck with me as a classic retelling of some ones honest look at their own experience, their failures/stupidity, and both good and bad choices. 

This version adds a lot more nuance and more understanding to what he experienced, and the added snippets add a lot to round out some of the people and tales without watering down the experiences or raw emotion.

His experiences are unique due to his circumstances, and most importantly, he has an excellent way of telling the story. It’s not just a cut and dry “i went here, I did this...” ... but he understands narrative, he understands human emotion, and he is able to convey things in a way many other authors of this genre actually fail to do.

The Thanksgiving holiday typically brings families and friends together in a celebration of common gratitude for all the good things that have happened during the previous year. People celebrate the holiday in various ways, with parades, football marathons, and attending religious services, but food remains the over-arching theme. For astronauts embarked on long-duration space missions, separation from family and friends is inevitable and they rely on fellow crew members to share in the tradition and enjoy the culinary traditions as much as possible. In this most unusual of years when the pandemic may alter typical Thanksgiving gatherings, it seems appropriate to review how astronauts over the years have celebrated the holiday during their time in space. Sejarah Ernst & Young 

Ernst & Young masuk dalam jajaran empat besar firma akuntan di dunia sebab besaran karyawan dan pendapatan selama setahun jumlahnya bersaing dengan tiga firma besar lainnya. Pada 2022, Ernst & Young tercatat memiliki 365.399 karyawan di seluruh dunia dan mencatatkan pendapatan senilai USD45,4 miliar. 

Semua perusahaan akuntan The Big Four ini juga menyediakan jasa lain di samping audit, yakni jasa perpajakan, startegi dan management consulting, valuasi, market research, dan layanan legal lainnya. Standar yang diberlakukan EY pun sama tinggi dan ketat dengan tiga firma lainnya. 

Pendirian Ernst & Young tidaklah dimulai dengan satu entitas, melainkan terbentuk dari beberapa proses merger antara firma-firma akuntan. Firma pertama yang menjadi awal pendiriannya adalah Harding & Pullein yang berdiri pada 1849 di Inggris. 

Pada tahun yang sama, firma tersebut bergabung dengan akuntan yang membuka jasa audit, yakni Frederick Whinney, yang setahun kemudian menjadi partner atau mitra. Firma tersebut kemudian sempat berubah nama menjadi Whinney, Smith & Whinney. 

Firma kedua yang menjadi pondasi pendirian EY adalah Ernst & Ernst yang didirikan oleh Alwin C. Ernst dan saudaranya Theodore Ernst pada 1903 di Ohio, Amerika Serikat. Firma ketiga yang juga menjadi pondasi EY adalah Arthur Young & Co. yang didirikan di Chicaho pada 1906 oleh seorang akuntan Skotlandia bernama Arthur Young. 

Pada 1924, kedua firma ini menjalin kerja sama erat dengan firma akuntan Inggris bernama Young with Broads Paterson & Co., sementara Ernst menjalin kerja sama dengan Whinney, Smith & Whinney. 

Barulah pada 1979, kedua kumpulan firma tersebut bergabung untuk membentuk jaringan firma akuntan profesional yang lebih besar, saat itu bernama Ernst & Whinney. Satu dekade kemudian, barulah firma itu melakukan merger dengan Arthur Young & Co. untuk membentuk Ernst & Young. 

Merger antara Ernst & Whinney dan Arthur Young & Co. ini berkontribusi pada pembentukan The Big Four Accounting Firm. Mulanya, firma akuntan terbesar di dunia pada 1989 berjumlah delapan perusahaan. 

Pembentukan Ernst & Young, juga merger yang dilakukan Deloitte Haskin & Sells dengan Touche Ross dan Price Waterhouse dan Cooper & Lybrand, akhirnya menyusutkan jumlah menjadi empat. 

Dilansir dari Investopedia (2/5), keempat firma akuntan ini melakukan audit dari banyak perusahaan publik terbesar di dunia. Bahkan, 500 perusahaan global dalam urutan Fortune, menggunakan jasa The Big Four untuk menyelesaikan urusan audit keuangannya. 

Beberapa klien The Big Four antara lain Apple, Exxon Mobil, Amazon, Ford Motor Co., dan lain-lain. Laporan dari CFA Institute pada 2018, menyebutkan bahwa 30% emiten dalam S&P 500 diaudit oleh PwC, 31% diaudit oleh Ernst & Young, 20% diaudit oleh Deloitte, dan 19% diaudit oleh KPMG.

“Twelve Cases in Supreme Court,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 16, 1933. Page 3. ---- Murder Charge Against Hendrie Included in the Heavy Docket ---- Twelve cases including two criminal and ten civil actions appear on the docket for trial at the Spring Assizes opening here Monday afternoon with Mr. Justice Raney, a former Attorney-General of Ontario presiding. Sir Alfred Morine of Toronto will be the Crown Prosecutor for the two criminal cases. Sir Alfred was knighted in Newfoundland.

George Albert Hendrie will face thecharge of murdering Peter Davis. Hendrie is alleged to have brutally assaulted and robbed Davis at the RCHA canteen on December 18. Davis later succumbed from injuries received. Hendrie was arrested in Smiths Falls a few days after the assault and brought to Kingston.

Hess Vinkle of Oso township will face an arson charge in the other criminal case at the Assizes. Vinkle was tried on this charge some time ago but the Jury disagreed.

Nine of the civil actions are non-jury cases while the case of Cecil Heasllp against Abe and Ida Mrister for $2500 damages caused by the negligent operation of the defendant's motor car will be tried by Jury.

Included in the non-jury cases is the divorce action of Marguerite Smith against William Clifford Smith and Edna McEahern. This case was heard before Chief Justice Ross at the Fall Assizes. 

The other non-jury cases are:

Ebenezer Woodcock, plaintiff, and the County of Frontenac, township of Kennebec, John Wesley Hayes and Frank H. Purdy, by order of Judge H. A. Lavell, dated Nov. 21, 1932, defendant. The plaintiffs claim is for damages for the wrongful sale of certain lands.

Cecelia Mahoney, plaintiff, and Georg L. Carpenter Bessie Carpenter and William Lower, defendants. Plaintiffs claim is on a mortgage dated October 5 1928. 

James Grant, plaintiff, and Charles Zizso, defendant. Plaintiffs claim is tor damages caused by the negligent operation of the defendant's motor truck. 

Annie Lacey and William Lacey, plaintiffs, and Frederick J McGarvey and William McGarvey, defendants. Plaintiffs claim is for the principal and interest due under a covenant contained in a deed.

Mary Hewgill, plaintiff, and Jock Wilson, defendant. Plaintiff's claim is for damsges caused by the negligent driving of the defendant. 

Melville Norris by his next friend, John Norris, plaintiff, and Frank Smith, defendant. Plaintiff’s claim is for $2500 damages as the result of the negligent operation of a motor car.

A friend reminded me, recently, that I don’t have time (for what is irrelevant here). Have been ruminating on (avoiding the consequences of) this, since. And thinking too about the place dimension of time, as discussed by Veronica O’Keane in her The Rag and Bone Shop : How we make memories and memories make us (2021) — “One’s sense of time is inseparable from events, but this is a sense of time. Might time have something to do with place cells?” (107) and “The whole concept of time is generally unhelpful in understanding science, be it physics or neuroscience... From the perspective of recording events, the present is consciousness. In a seemingly ironic twist, I myself think that the only place that time does not exist is in the moment of consciousness...” (113)

The encountered lines — all included above from my search in pre-1923 sources — have found their respective though non-chronological places in a kind of rocking, panning motion, in which sediments settle into their respective ripples / couplets.

Would, could, does this — sequence — work (whatever “work” means) without the anchorings / tetherings / bibliographic wastefull(ness; line 9 above) that follow it? They were needed in the making, anyway, and for there to be sufficient distraction for the making to sustain.

Little Girl Holding Apples in Hands, Petite fille tenant des pommes dans les mains by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1895

Petite fille tenant des pommes dans les mains is a three-quarter length portrait of one of Bouguereau’s favorite models, a little girl named Yvonne. She and her two sisters, Jeanne and Marguerite, who also modeled for the artist, lived in La Rochelle where Bouguereau spent most of his summers in the 1890s. Yvonne appears in many of the artist’s most charming paintings, including Les prunes, and Le goûter. La Rochelle had strong personal associations for Bouguereau, for not only was it where he was born, but also the place he chose to spend the last years of his life. Every summer, Bouguereau would depart Paris and travel to the country after months of relentless painting; La Rochelle, which provided him much needed solace and peace, also allowed him to work at leisure.

In the present work, Yvonne is depicted as a very young child, just past toddlerhood, clasping a group of three apples to her chest in her still chubby hands. Her hair still retains the silken softness of baby hair, and the artist’s ability to capture the texture of individual strands of hair is just one of his remarkable technical achievements. She is portrayed as both timid and mischievous; her eyes gaze straight at the viewer, her lips are parted in an almost-smile, as if she knows she might possibly have taken one apple too many.

The child is depicted on a path rather densely lined with trees, evoking the forests of fairy tales. This is a conceit that Bouguereau used in the later years of his career and appears in La liseuse, Les deux soeurs, La fleur preferée and La Bergère, all painted in the same year as the present work. The image of the blossoming flower also appears in several of the artist’s paintings of very young girls such as Espièglerie, En penience, La liseuse and Les prunes. The connotations of innocence and purity inherent in the delicate flowers would not have been lost on his audience.

In 1895, the year the present work was painted, Bouguereau described his process of transforming the every-day into the ideal in an interview with Eugene Tardieu, ‘In painting, I’m an idealist. I see only the beautiful in art and, for me art is beautiful. Why reproduce what is ugly in nature? I don’t see why it should be necessary’ (W. Bouguereau, interviewed by Tardieu in ‘La Peinture et les Peintres’, L’Écho de Paris, 8 May 1895, n.p.).

Petite fille tenant des pommes dans les mains is seemingly identical to a painting by the same title which is currently in the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine. Although Bouguereau painted reductions of many of his most popular works, a painting executed on the same scale is unusual in his oeuvre. However, paintings depicting charming young children were among Bouguereau’s most commercial subjects and there was always a ready market, primarily in America, therefore it would not be out of the ordinary to find two identical paintings. The signature, while original to the painting, appears to be signed by another hand. One may speculate that after Bouguereau completed the painting, for reasons unknown, it was signed by a studio assistant. Frederick C. Ross has confirmed that the work is entirely by the hand of the artist.
