The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) Review
The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare may be shallow and sensationalised but it sure is fun, in a glib Nazi-smashers kind of way. #Review

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare [trailer]
The British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II.
Killing nazis is always a noble task, and the movie is meant as light entertainment. But when it happens like in a bloodless video game, it feels a bit pointless. Though it helps that most actors speak with an always pleasant to listen to British accent.
It gives me no pleasure to say that, thanks to Alex Pettyfer, Til Schweiger is not the one who gives the worst performance in this film.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: Guy Ritchie, Gangsters, and World War Two
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has it all. Guy Ritchie, gangsters (In the guise of Nazis.) and World War Two. It is based on the book of the same name by Damien Lewis (And before you ask. No, not the actor from Band of Brothers. The actor spells his name with an ‘a’.) The only drawback, if it can be counted; as one, is the dodgy timing of it all. "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare"
A historical WWII film based on incredible true events that's lively, refreshing, and feels like it's operating on a different level of creativity and vision.
Blending fact and fiction, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” isn’t the movie I expected, but it’s a movie I highly enjoyed. Fully embracing his signature slick visual style, action-packed storytelling, and sly wit, director Guy Ritchie has made a historical WWII film based on incredible true events that’s lively, refreshing, and feels like it’s operating on a different level of creativity…

"The entire country without electricity, hospitals collapsing, and they're like this. We're not to be demoralized nor weakened, 25 years are already enough".
This is El Cuartel de la Montaña. There's where Chávez rests are. During the entire blackout, that, for me, was 19 hours long, that place had electricity.
El Helicoide, the largest torture centre in LATAM also had electricity.
"A patient in the Noriega Trigo hospital in San Francisco just died. She was intubated and glued to a respirator.
The hospital doesn't have a power plant, nor UPS for the devices. They tried to resurrect her with CPR and nothing".
friend since 4 in the morning without electricity. The light came on about an hour ago with a lot of force and burned down a small refrigerator that we have with my mom and sister's insulin. This is a disaster. We went out to buy ice as best we could and the neighbor lent us some Colman coolers to store them in because the heat here is very intense. God willing, we'll get away from these people. Thank you. Anonymous. Please.
In Lecheria, girl.
Maria Corina is very badass, she flew with her rocket and left us all without electricity EXCEPT Chavez, Helicoide and Miraflores... it's incredible that they are even incoherent when it comes to lying.
— Without showing evidence, Freddy Ñáñez blamed María Corina Machado and Edmundo González for the national blackout: "People like that cannot be considered Venezuelans" "FREDDY ÑÁÑEZ BLAMES MARIA CORINA AND EDMUNDO FOR THE NATIONAL BLACKOUT"
Do you still believe that everything that has happened in Venezuela (electrical failures, shortages) in these last 25 years is the fault of others? No, gentlemen, it is a system of psychological conditioning to exhaust every Venezuelan.
— Hospitals, nursing homes, schools, homes... WITHOUT LIGHT The Helicoid TORTURE WITH ELECTRICITY What is this called? STATE TERRORISM
And this happened already.
Additionally:
Two former Colombian soldiers, Alexander Ante and José Aron Medina Aranda, were detained in Venezuela during a stopover while returning from fighting in Ukraine. Following their arrest in Caracas, both were extradited to Russia, where they now face charges of having fought against Russian forces as mercenaries. A Moscow court has ordered their provisional detention, which could lead to a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The family, who had been waiting for their return in Colombia, were devastated to discover that they had been sent to Russia without warning.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (no spoilers)
I saw an early screening of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It’s the new film directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Henry Cavill. It was far better than Cavill’s previous movie this year - Argyll. (I won’t go into details but Cavill wasn’t responsible for Argyll’s failure. That distinction goes to the muddled direction by Matthew Vaughn; a script filled with plot holes; and Bryce Dallas Howard playing the frumpy and unbelievable as a master spy.
But back to TMUW, it’s a heavily fictionalized version of an actual mission to thwart German submarines off the western coast of Africa during WW2. It’s an action movie with some comedy but never over the top. And it revels in killing Nazis. On a scale of Hated-it/Liked-it/Loved-it, I liked-it-plus. It kept my interest and I never felt bored.
A minor character in the film is future spy novelist Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox). It’s suggested that the mission was the inspiration for James Bond (a role that Cavill narrowly lost out to Daniel Craig).
But TMUW is more like Mission Impossible (the TV show, not the Tom Cruise movies). Cavill, with his wild curly hair and lumberjack style beard, leads a team with special skills.
Alan Ritchson (from “Reacher”) plays a Danish soldier who is a master archer. The real Dane who wasn’t nearly as muscular in real life. I enjoyed Ritchson’s performance, and I’d love to see him and Cavill work together again.
The film also stars:
Babs Olusanmokun (doctor on Star Trek Strange New Worlds).
Mexican actress Eiza González, a femfatal that might recognizer from Netflix’s 3 Body Problem.
Til Schweiger, the German-Brad-Pitt, plays the Nazi commandant.
Rory Kinnear is unrecognizable as Winston Churchill.
The movie is rated a hard R due to all the Nazis killed with guns, machine guns, arrows, knives, daggers, and bombs. After a while it’s like shooting fish in a barrel or shooting ducks at a carnival arcade.
If Guy Ritchie makes a sequel, I’d watch it.

The Mosley Review: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Do you wanna know why we constantly revisit World War II in film? It isn't because it was the greatest war. It isn't because of the enginuity that came from it. Its because it features the most robust stories ever to be told or discovered whether its from the American or the European campaign. There are probably hundreds of classified documents that are still sealed to this day and it is always fascinating to see them revealed. Yes, we love the heroism in the stories about the front lines, but what's more interesting to see is the internal planning of all Allied Forces and how they're plans get executed. Whether they succeed or fail is the real drama and the stuff of legend that ends up inspiring fictional characters we all know and love. That is what this film lovingly highlights and I have to say it was a smooth and joyful ride has good suspense with great action and comedy. The tone was a bit off at times as it would struggle with wanting to be a smart espionage driven story and a adventure film with little consequence for the heroes in the story.
Henry Cavill truly charms every moment he's on screen as Gus March-Phillipps. He was a fun leader of the ragtag team of mercenaries and I liked his controlled nature. He never really seemed to have doubts, but he did have a moment or too that he felt challenged. The amount of glee and calm he has in this film was cool in the more action driven scenes. The most standout moment of the film truly comes from his introductive scene as within in five minutes, you understand the man and his motivation. Alan Ritchson was good and brutal as his fellow merc, Anders Lassen. I liked the banter he had with Gus as the film went along and how eager and efficient of a Nazi killer he was. Henry Golding was fun and smart as the explosive expert of the team, Freddy Alvarez. The banter between him and Anders was fun as they would tease each other often. Hero Fiennes Tiffin was good as Henry Hayes and even though he didn't have that much depth, he was effective and a valued navigator in the war occupied Atlantic Ocean. Alex Pettyfer was cool and collected as Gus's oldest friend, Geoffrey Appleyard. You really felt the bond and history between them in the scenes that they had together. Cary Elwes is always a joy to see on screen and as Brigadier Gubbins 'M', he was perfectly royal and commanding as the leader of the secret operation the team is recruited for. Freddie Fox was good as the iconic Ian Fleming and I loved that he was apart of the operation from beginning to end. He wasn't a forgotten character and I liked that he seemed to plotting out his soon to be famous character. Rory Kinnear was fantastic and steadfast as Winston Churchill. He had a dominating presence and sense of urgency that is needed for the legendary Prime Minister. Eiza González and Babs Olusanmokun were fantastic as Marjorie Stewart and Mr. Heron. Their chemistry together was great and I enjoyed their convert planning and business deals. Eiza charms the screen with such control in her more tense dialogue scenes and Babs was that quiet type of dangerous that you never saw coming. Til Schweiger is always intense as a hero or villain and as Heinrich Luhr, there is an amount of sinister motivation in his eyes that made him the marquee antagonist.
The score by the director's frequent collaborator, Christopher Benstead, was good, quirkie and epic toward the end of the film. I felt the tension in the finale the most thanks to his score as the action kicks off and the plan doesn't go as smooth. Like I said before, the tone was a little all over the place at times since you have so many parts moving at once. Director Guy Ritchie's flair for elaborate planning was on display, but it felt a little rusty in its execution. Its a massive cast so not everyone has a chance to have a moment to shine outside of the action. Maybe some of them didn't really have much to work with or the real people in the true story the film was based on weren't that deep. Either way, I still had fun with the film and I enjoyed the action. Is it gonna be one of the most memorable films of Guy Ritchie's filmography, no, but it'll be a fun one to view once in awhile. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, a film with Henry Cavill, gets a trailer.
Inspired by a true story, this action and comedy film will follow UK special forces during World War II. Henry Cavill is proving he's very game for a spy adventure or two.
youtube
Inspired by real events, the action/comedy film follows a secret World War II combat organisation formed by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, and the writer Ian Fleming – the creator of James Bond.
The film is based on recently revealed documents from the British War Department. The plot follows the first special forces organization in the United Kingdom, formed by the Prime Minister of the time, Winston Churchill, during the Second World War.
It follows Cavill's character as he is released from prison and asked by Churchill to help on a top-secret mission, although he reveals that the team he would have in mind to accompany him might not be to the Prime Minister's tastes.
The group, with rebels and bandits, sets out on an unauthorised mission against the Nazis, using combat methods described as unconventional and completely “nasty”. It is worth mentioning that, in real life, this organisation gave rise to other secret operations units, such as Black Ops.
"The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly 'ungentlemanly' fighting techniques.
"Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare."
A new film by Guy Ritchie ( Tycoons of Crime ) with Henry Cavill, got its first trailer on Tuesday, March 30th. In addition to Cavill – who takes on the lead role of the real-life founder of the No. 62 Commando unit Gus March-Phillipps – the film boasts a star-studded supporting cast, including Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusanmokun, Henrique Zaga, Til Schweiger, Henry Golding and Cary Elwes.
Meanwhile, some actors are playing historical figures who will be very recognisable to most viewers – for example, Cary Elwes is taking on the role of Winston Churchill and Freddie Fox stars as James Bond author Ian Fleming.
The script is also written by Ritchie, along with Paul Tamasy , Eric Johnson and Arash Amel . The basis of the project comes from the book with the same name as the production, written by Damien Lewis .
The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare portrays a heavily fictionalised version of “Operation Postmaster.” The film is scheduled to be released in the UK and US cinemas on Friday 19th April 2024.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was excellent. A small group of soldiers and spies are sent on an unofficial mission to sabotage a Nazi supply ship off the coast of equatorial Africa.
Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill team up again after The Man from UNCLE. We're getting a double fix of Henry hotness as Henry Golding plays another one of the main characters. There's also Alex Pettyfer and Eiza González (I knew I recognised her, she's in 3-Body Problem).
As usual in Guy Ritchie's movies, there's some queer imagery, and Anders Lassen even discusses his taste in men: Freddy Alvarez is his type. ^^
