"The Moon Shines on The Mess" Great photo by Gary Crossland snipped from the Crossland Captures Facebook page, where the caption is "The Moon got stuck on Fred Haise's head tonight." That's the Fred Haise statue across from the Biloxi Lighthouse on the beach highway. Yeah, that's bird poop on the statue in a beach parking lot.

Enterprise First Free Flight by NASA on The Commons Via Flickr: The Shuttle Orbiter 101 "Enterprise" soars above the NASA 747 carrier aircraft after separating during the first free flight of the Shuttle Apporach and Landing Tests (ALT) conducted on August 12, 1977 at Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center in Southern California. Astronauts Fred W. Haise Jr., and C. Gordon Fullerton were the crew of the "Enterprise." The ALT free flights are designed to verify Orbiter subsonic airworthiness, integrated systems operations and pilot-guided approach and landing capability and satisfying prerequisites to automatic flight control and navigation mode. Space Shuttle Enterprise separates from the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft during its first free-flight of the Approach and Landing Tests. August 12, 1977.
Approach and Landing Test 12 was the first free flight of the Enterprise, crewed by Commander Fred Haise and Pilot C. Gordon Fullerton. The flight lasted just over 5 minutes, with the Shuttle landing at the Rogers Dry Lake just outside of Edwards Air Force Base and NASA's Ames-Dryden Flight Research Center (now named the Armstrong Flight Research Center).
Another view of Enterprise as it separates from the SCA.
Out of sixteen tests during the ALT program, the final five were free-flights. Three of these free-flights included the tailcone, with the last two removing the tailcone and including mock ups of the RS-25 Space Shuttle Main Engine.
Fred Haise and C. Gordan Fullerton pose in front of the prototype Space Shuttle Enterprise outside of Rockwell International's Orbiter Assembly Facility in Palmdale, California. September 1976.

Apollo 13 (1995)
During the flight Fred Haise developed a urinary tract infection and later kidney infections. These caused him to be in pain for most of the trip
(This is my favorite movie and I have no idea if anyone’s made gifs of this scene but if they have, I couldn’t find them, so I just sighed and said: Fine, I’ll do it myself...)

Against all odds. Apollo 13 astronauts Fred Haise, James Lovell & Jim Swigert stand with President Nixon following their harrowing ordeal in space. An oxygen tank in the service module ruptured 2 days into the mission which crippled the craft’s life support system. Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 film captures the essence of the frightening experience beautifully.

A fantastic, rarely seen view of OV-101 (Enterprise), at the moment of release from the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft during Free Flight no. 5 (FF-5), October 26, 1977. FF-5 was the final flight in the Space Shuttle Program’s Approach and Landing Tests (ALT), this one being ALT-16. The 2-minute, 1-second flight, crewed by Fred Haise & Gordon Fullerton, touched down on the main runway at Edwards Air Force Base (Runway 04/22). FF-5 was the first & only free flight to land on this runway, in order to simulate the conditions of an actual return from orbit.
