Killing Eve's Winter TCA panel
*spoilers ahead*
In the sneak peek, Eve reconnects with her handler Carolyn on a park bench and admits she went to find Villanelle in Paris (Carolyn: “What’s her flat like?” Eve: “Chic as s–t”), while a fleeing Villanelle recovers from her stabbing, pouring vodka on her knife wound. She ends up in a hospital, telling her fellow patient that a woman stabbed her. “Women don’t stab,” the boy says. “It surprised me, too,” Villanelle replies, adding that “she did it to show me how much she cares about me.” We also see flashes of Villanelle stabbing a new victim and wearing crazy new outfits… before she and Eve end up on opposite sides of a door once again.
Emerald Fennel didn't work on the first season but is showrunning the second. She came on board before the season came out so the explosion of joy and attention started after they were already working on the second season.
Sandra Oh says that Emerald and Phoebe Waller-Bridge have been friends for a long time and have a similar sensibility. "Emerald has her own voice entirely but it really moved from one hand to a similar hand."
Jodie Comer says "Villanelle's reaction to Eve stabbing her and how emotionally she perceives that" is interesting because neither of them are quite expecting that action.
"I think you see them vulnerable in slightly different ways. They've crossed a line and there's kind of no going back. We have a lot of energy at the beginning...and that pushes both of them into a different place of vulnerability," Sandra Oh.
Neither Sandra Oh nor Jodie Comer want to share on what they draw for the tense moments between their characters because they are such personal things. Also Oh notes that it's hard to remember where they were a year ago when filming to articulate it now.
"I always viewed her as an actress. She does her homework and she learns her lines, and she's very proud and wants to do a good job," Jodie Comer says of how she sees her character.
For Jodie Comer, the “complexity and versatility” of the characters is what keeps things interesting. “It’s written by a woman who understands all of this and it’s so visible in the writing. It’s so much fun to play. It’s a real gift,” she said.
"How can you come to terms with a relationship that seems to be impossible? That's what I think we're trying to figure out daily," Sandra Oh.
Emerald Fennel says this show is "much more particular" about costumes than many others because "Villanelle fetishizes clothes." It's something she relates to personally, but they have an "amazing team" who brings "amazing stuff to us."
You have to be specific w/ Villanelle's clothing, from PJs to the moment she puts on Crocs in the second season. While clothes have been thought of as frivolous in the past, "we all know, as women, how powerful clothes can be as a weapon"
In the first two episodes, Villanelle is in a very vulnerable setting, Sandra Oh notes, and after she moves out of that we'll see how much clothes mean to her.
The second season of the show will also expand outward a bit to consider the possibility that there is another assassin in the mix. While the Eve and Villanelle relationship will always be the core of the show, Emerald Fennel said that “what is really interesting is saying, ‘What do we do when somebody else comes along?’ Is Eve an assassin expert or is she a Villanelle expert? And what does that mean for her, for Carolyn, for her job?'”
Why did Killing Eve become a hit? Sandra Oh turns the table & asks the critics: "We're in it, we're making as best as we can... You watch everything!" Why did it resonate, she asks. Co-star Fiona Shaw's theory: "This series nails that nobody has a clue what happens next!"
Fiona Shaw about Jodie Comer: "Jodie is a chameleon. She could turn into a lizard tomorrow."
“I think it’s also the placement of the humor within the show — the way it undercuts the really serious moments is genius,” Jodie Comer said.
"The humor is the open door," Sandra Oh notes of what makes Killing Eve stand out. "Humor is the door that's easier for people to pass through." Adds EP Sally Woodward-Gentle: "The freedom to being naughty. What Villanelle does is a bit of wish fullfillment."
Jodie Comer on the show's success bringing out others who want to be a part of it: "We have people who want to be a part of the show and want to be killed!'
Sandra Oh on Killing Eve impact: "It was amazing to be making a show and doing exactly what Time's Up is trying to do and trying to bring. And feeling the wave... our show examining and taking the female psyche seriously... that's what I feel aligned by."
The same is true for Emerald Fennel, who pointed out that as women working in this business, “we’re used to being the cement and men are the bricks. We’re used to filling in the cracks — we take in the space and make it work. [But] on a show like this we’re the bricks.”

The How I Met Your Father Idea is Good, Actually
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
At first, it admittedly seems like a bad late April Fool’s prank. Alas, it is not.
Per Deadline, Hulu today announced that it had commissioned a full-season, 10-episode order for a sequel to the hit CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother. To switch things up a bit, this iteration will be called How I Met Your Father and will star Hilary Duff (Lizzie McGuire) as Sophie, a woman in the future who is telling her son the story of how she met his father.
The new series comes from This Is Us showrunners and Love, Victor creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are onboard as producers, as is Duff in addition to holding down the starring role.
“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” Duff said in a statement. “As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”
One could be forgiven for reacting to this news with annoyance or even outright horror. It has all the hallmarks of only the most creatively bankrupt decisions. A studio has taken a well-liked property, changed precisely one noun in the title, and tried to repackage it to you as new. That’s not even to mention the fact that HIMYM has a toxic legacy thanks to a deservedly loathed series finale.
But if we try to put aside all the baggage for a moment, maybe we can appreciate that this idea might actually be…good?
Or at least I think it might be. And so too did American actress, director, visionary, celestial being Greta Gerwig. Real terminally online TV heads will recall that this isn’t the first time a studio has attempted to grab the low-hanging fruit of “How I Met Your (Insert Parent Here).” Back in 2014, just as the original show was wrapping up, CBS commissioned a frustratingly titled spinoff called How I Met Your Dad (why they chose “Dad” other “Father” in that title will never make sense) with Gerwig set to write and star.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Though How I Met Your Dad came before Gerwig wrote and directed 2017’s Lady Bird or 2019’s Little Women, she was already an indie cinema darling with an iconic role in 2012’s Frances Ha under her belt. To put it simply, even in 2014, Greta Gerwig was very comfortably above this material. But she signed up for it anyway and the show actually made it pretty far into production! Look at this footage from the actual pilot:

And get a load of this amazing DVD screener box art, highlighting a surprisingly excellent cast:
Time to break out this DVD for another watch? pic.twitter.com/ibmDe0gFc6
— Michael Schneider (@franklinavenue) April 21, 2021
Despite being a transparent money and zeitgeist grab and premiering so soon after HIMYM’s terrible finale, How I Met Your Dad made it pretty far all things considered. And I suspect it made it so far for the same reason that the project has popped up once again: it’s a good idea.
Before losing steam at the end, How I Met Your Mother was really a charming sitcom. That is largely due to the talent of its cast and appeal of its characters (yes, even Ted Mosby) but it’s also due to the strength of its core premise. How I Met Your Mother was a show about the present (roughly 2005 through 2014) told from the perspective of the future.
By narrating his own story years in the future (2030, which is scarily now only nine years away), Ted Mosby (voiced by Bob Saget) got to edit and tailor his story to his will. This meant cutting out some less savory aspects for children to hear (sandwiches instead of marijuana) or casting himself as the hero when he was the villain.
How I Met Your Mother’s main narrative of five young friends finding themselves in the big city was often relatable and entertaining, but it was that meta narrative of a story being told from a flawed memory that made it truly compelling. To a certain extent, we are merely the stories we tell about ourselves to other people. And that’s what How I Met Your Mother was all about.
Shows about (usually white) friends in New York City are an inescapable part of the TV landscape. From Seinfeld to Friends to Girls, they are simply never going to go away as long as there is television and as long as there is New York City. If they’re to be a fact of life, they might as well come along with narrative devices as creative and flexible as HIMYM’s.
Now another group of talented folks will have the chance to pick up that narrative device and run with it. Aptaker and Berger are very capable television storytellers, as evidenced by their previous work. Duff is an appealing presence and has outlasted the stigma of Disney child stardom for a reason. Together, they’ve earned the opportunity to tell a new story with a familiar framing device.
And if none of that is convincing, just remember that if an idea is good enough for Greta Gerwig, it’s good enough for all of us.

Finally, a real fashion moment at an Apple event
Apple events are not traditionally hubs for bold style, so thank god for Wyatt Mitchell.
Mitchell, who is the company's director of app design, stepped onstage at Monday's Apple event in Cupertino wearing a white workwear-inspired jumpsuit and Off-White x Converse sneakers. In a world of Silicon Valley vests, uniform dressing, and low-key button downs, it was a rare men's fashion moment — so of course Twitter noticed.
This guys jumpsuit is my #AppleEvent highlight so far pic.twitter.com/Z8bIkEKrJK

Is this the first time we’ve had a presenter in a jumpsuit at an Apple event? I’m digging it.
— Dan Moren (@dmoren) March 25, 2019
That jumpsuit is easily the best outfit I have ever seen on stage at an Apple event.

Yeah yeah magazines, great. But where can I download this guy's jumpsuit? #AppleEvent
— Michael Schneider (@franklinavenue) March 25, 2019
I was really bored by this Apple event until I saw this guy’s jumpsuit. Heck yeah dude. I’m into it.

— Jacques Slade (@kustoo) March 25, 2019
The outfit's only downside: There's a chance it distracted the audience from what Mitchell was talking about (magazines on the new subscription service Apple News+). But if it gets him a cover spot on GQ, maybe it was worth it?
