Milestone Monday
Poetry in Punk
On this day, December 30th, 1946, Patti Smith, a singer, songwriter, author, poet, photographer, and painter, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Often referred to as the "Godmother of Punk," Smith is known for her influential music that blends rock and poetry. Her debut album, Horses, released in 1975, is considered a landmark work in the punk rock genre. Beyond her music career, Patti Smith has written several books, including the acclaimed memoir Just Kids, which explores her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and their experiences within the New York City artistic scene. Throughout her life, she has been a prominent cultural figure, advocating for artistic freedom and social change.

Our first edition of A Useless Death, a poem by Patti Smith that was published as a chapbook and distributed by Gotham Book Mart and Gallery in New York in 1972.

Top, The first thing you’ll see if you search Google for “tank man” right now will not be the iconic picture of the unidentified Chinese man who stood in protest in front of a column of tanks leaving Tiananmen Square, but an entirely fake, AI-generated selfie of that historical event. Update 9/21/2023: Google says it has removed the AI-generated selfie from Knowledge Graph and Knowledge Panels, where it was appearing, after 404 Media reached out for comment and first published this story. Computer imaging tends to flatten our magnificent, multi-sensory, simultaneous and synchronic capacities of imagination by turning the design process into a passive visual manipulation, a retinal journey. The computer creates a distance between the maker and the object, whereas drawing by hand as well as working with models put the designer in a haptic contact with the object, or space. In our imagination, the object is simultaneously held in the hand and inside the head, and the imagined and projected physical image is modelled by our embodied imagination. We are inside and outside of the conceived object at the same time. Creative work calls for a bodily and mental identification, empathy and compassion.

Milestone Monday
On this day, November 4th in 1946, noted and often controversial American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was born in the Floral Park neighborhood of Queens in New York City. Perhaps best-remembered for his homoerotic imagery, Mapplethorpe's subject matter focused on statuesque male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes, and highly formal portraits of artists and celebrities, mostly in black and white.
His portraits of Patti Smith, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Louise Bourgeois, and bodybuilder Lisa Lyon, among many others, have become iconic. Perhaps the most notable controversy related to Mapplethorpe centers on his 1989 exhibition, Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Moment at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in DC and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, which sparked heated debates about obscenity and the use of public funds to display such works. The Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center was even brought to trial on charges of obscenity, but was exonerated by a jury. Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989 at age 42 due to complications from HIV/AIDS.
The images shown here come from several publications held in Special Collections:
Robert Mapplethorpe by Peter Weiermair, published in Frankfurt am by Frankfurter Kunstverein in 1981.
Robert Mapplethorpe by Richard Marshall, with essays by Richard Howard and Ingrid Sischy, published in New York by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1988.
Some Women by Robert Mapplethorpe, with an introduction by Joan Didion, published in Boston by Boston : Bulfinch Press, 1989 in 1989.
Pictures: Robert Mapplethorpe edited and designed by Dimitri Levas, published by Arena Editions in 1999.

As part of the opening day program of DEMO-, an exhibition of site-specific virtual art in the public space of Frankfurt am Main, the symposium ARtificial Realities was held in the Crespo Studio in Frankfurt –– a collaboration between WAVA and the NRW-Forum, where the second edition of the AR Biennale will open on May 13th under the title HYBRID NATURE (see for more information). PANEL II Not so ARtificial Realities With Adela Demetja (Tirana Art Lab) Gloria Aino Grzywatz (peer to space) Ofili Ebube Sett (Memory Cubes) Moderated by Alke Heykes (Kunstverein Göttingen) DEMO- Augmented Exhibition With works by Morehshin Allahyari, Tony Cokes, Flaka Haliti, Ahmet Öğüt, Tamiko Thiel & /p, and Les Trucs. The streets and squares are crucial sites for creative and political expression. From demonstrations to monuments, advertisements, graffiti, guerilla actions, and street art, public-space activations are essential for democratic thought and action. Today, with the virtual layering of data continuously feeding through our mobile devices, every physical space is also an augmented space. To mark the 175th jubilee of the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung, the first attempt to form a freely elected German parliament, DEMO- seeks to reimagine the public space by bringing the virtual “down to earth,” anchoring it in specific places and contexts, challenging the linearity and binarity of the physical. With visual and sonic interventions, participative installations and critical monuments, DEMO- virtually occupies specific locations across Frankfurt am Main and introduces artworks of different media that take over and augment the shared public space. All artworks are accessible on location via the WAVA app, free to download on Android and iOS until April 30th 2024. About WAVA DEMO- is powered by WAVA—Withstanding Audio Visual Augmentations—an emerging platform for site-specific augmented reality turning the world into an ever-changing exhibition space, developed by Ben Livne Weitzman, David Bachmann, Florian Adolph, and Grit Medea. With WAVA, artists, curators, institutions, and the broad public can easily place, share, and experience virtual artworks in specific sites and contexts, envisioning a new hybrid space that bridges the physical and virtual. Get in touch! DEMO- was made possible through the support of the Netzwerk Paulskirche and the Cultural Office of Frankfurt am Main on the 175th anniversary of the first German National Assembly in the Paulskirche.

I had this visiting professor in grad school who was the director of a contemporary art museum in Frankfurt and she is probably the hottest woman I have ever seen. She was really intimidating and we were all scared of her but that made us like her so much more and made her even hotter. I think about her often.
Franziska Nori, thanks for existing.
#like she is the blueprint#and she’s in her 50’s??#frankfurter kunstverein#I usually forget her name but after a quick Google I find her and just gape at her photos#she shamed us for not knowing who the new director of the met was#and now he’s my boss#her influence
