Being into gothic horror is wild, because you’ll look up the reviews/public opinion on a book and all the posts will be like “ugh, this was insufferable. The main character was the most melodramatic whiny narcissist cunt who’s perspective I’ve ever had the displeasure of following. When the main character wasn’t whining, it was just pages and pages of the most useless boring shit describing stupid landscapes over and over again. Boring and insufferable to read.”
And then you’ll get the book and read it and it’ll be like “Hi, I’m gothic protagonist. My entire family got brutally murdered by an unknown person and I also got horrifically abused as a child and struggle with severe mental illness, and now there’s unholy paranormal forces at work all against me, but at least I have the love of my life and my closest friends who I’d kill and die for and they’d do the same for me. Even though I’m cripplingly psychologically unwell and severely burdened with the mass of terrible things in my past, I’m going to figure out and track down the thing that killed my family and seek to destroy it, whilst poetically mirroring my suffering with the most beautiful and profound descriptions of the nature around me that you’ve ever read, contrasting the horror of nature with the beauty and goodness of it and giving you an existential crisis. This book is going to make you so ridiculously attached to these characters and change your whole perception of the life you lead.”

Boomers: Grumble grumble, young people don't read the classics, they're always on the tiktaks and their goddamn phones, mutter grumble bah.
A bunch of dorks on tumblr: Where is my good friend Jonathan? We haven't heard from him in a while. Victor, you are a bad parent! Take responsibility for your giant corpse baby! Man, I love Dickens' descriptions. Alas, poor Ogilvy. A trip to Jurassic Park? Sure!

I love the ways that the Frankenstein novel subtly questions the unquestionable elements of godhood and creation simply by putting a human in the role. The Creature demands that Victor create him a wife and give her to him, like God created Eve specifically for Adam’s loneliness.
Having Victor question whether a second creation would want the purpose she’s created for underhandedly asks: what if Eve didn’t want to be given to Adam?
It would definitely track with all the explorations of the trauma of motherhood and the mother’s role that Shelley seems to be processing through the story. What if the mother of all humanity didn’t want to be a mother?

There's something about Victor saying that he doesn't want a mutilated version of his story to go down in posterity and the fact that due to countless adaptations and reimagenings the perception of Frankenstein has been changed so much that most people don't really remember the original story.

Damn, pretentious traumatised men driven to their downfall by their obsessive pursuit of knowledge and their poet boyfriends who take care of them. Real not fake.

I do have to say that one detail of Victor's first nail in the coffin of his illness is how before he finally collapses from exhaustion, is how his wild laughter, then his following calls for Clerval could be interpreted as a horrified wife suffering from "hysteria" calling for her husband's protection.
Victor created the creature as a scientific experiment to bring life from the cold claws of death. Yet by making the creature "from scratch" instead of reanimating a corpse, he inadvertently put himself into the role of the mother instead of the father.
Victor made the creature with his own hands, selecting beautiful parts, feeling anxiety over the result, and neglecting his health in favor of caring for the parts of the creature. Mimicking the process of motherhood with a scientific view that made Victor feel partly impersonal from the creature, but not enough. After the process Victor feels horrified by his crime against nature personified by his corpse son staring at him in the middle of night, then Victor leaves him to escape from his responsability.
Then, after Victor wandered without any direction, Clerval comes as a beacon of hope to him. Like a light coming to guide Victor in the middle of the darkness. And it feels like it, Victor is so rejoiced that his dear Clerval has finally come to put his horrified mind at ease. Until Victor has to confront his reality once again, but this time Henry's opinion of him is on the line.
After Victor realized that the creature is gone, the last straw of his poor mental sanity is finally broken with cold laughter that horrifies Henry, along with Victor's cries asking him to save him. Then, the two of them stay with eachother for months, with Henry playing the role of worried yet caring husband, and Victor playing the role of ill and fragile wife.
