No. I know that I'm not smarter than you.
Then how did you catch me?
You had disadvantages.
What disadvantages?
You're insane.

Since I live in Toronto and my rewatch of HANNIBAL has ignited a Fannibal fire within me I'm visiting some of the shooting locations. So far I've been to the ext for
*Francis Dollarhyde's house (Hamilton)
*Dr. Lecter's Office Baltimore (Toronto)
*Hannibal's House (Toronto)
Definitely going to go to more spots. Unfortunately the beautiful house that was used as Will Graham's home in Wolftrap was torn down due to real estate development in Pickering Ont where the house was located. A beautiful property lost to the greed of Ontario developers is not uncommon here, a sad turn of events for the family who were forced to vacate the property.

Finished Beastars, at it stands, and am eagerly (albeit, not strictly patiently) waiting for the other half of Season Three to drop.
Let's dig in, shall we?
So, Legoshi has recovered from his near-death experience and is now continuing his quest to find Melon, who he believes he can change if only Melon would allow himself to be understood. Louis's investigation into the carnivore narcotic has led to him nearly being devoured, though it also leads to him exposing the truth to the public. Bill and Els have gotten approval to run a show of their own during the Festival of the Meteor. And Haru is... kinda there, in the background? Yeah, she's not really given any focus here.
A few highlights:
Sangwan continues to be weird. When Legoshi is the normal one, there's clearly something going on. They share a bath and philosophize about death and the food chain.
Flash, Flash, Hundred Yard Dash has a cousin here, who's a tattoo artist with a mild tendency to endeaden his clients. I've never considered how a tattoo would work over fur, but this one world-building detail is going to haunt me for the rest of the night.
Melon's developing leopard spots, a condition that parallels the affliction that caused Legoshi's mother to take her own life. Melon copes by having tattoos of melon leaves cover them. This bit actually harkens to a Riz moment in Season Two, where after enteethening Tem, his sense of taste is muted (Melon, apparently, has neither the palate of a carnivore, nor an herbivore, which leads him to have no sense of taste). Melon explicitly has no sense of taste, or libido; no desires. He does take exquisite pleasure in the pain Holger's tattooing inflicts upon him (how is this guy in business if he tends to kill clients so much? There's no way Melon pays enough to avoid the liability having this guy on staff would cause).
For some reason, the show chooses to pixilated Louis's lock-picking. This was quite funny, especially since nothing about the framing of this shot would at all be useful to someone interested in learning to pick locks. It's also probably the least illegal thing we have ever seen a character do in this show.
Legoshi fantasizes about going to the beach with Haru. He fantasizes about playing in the water with the Boys from Cherryton. He looks so damn happy to see Sangwan's home.
Ogms confronts Louis outright on the distinct possibility that his son might be gay. Louis, despite having a well known history with women, chooses to change the subject completely. Dude. Bisexuality. Look it up.
Legoshi once again fans the flames by desiring to see Melon naked. This isn't even gay speculation; he's just weird that way.
Melon is a melo(n)dramatic bitch, and I love him. I mean, yes, he's shot Legoshi again (rood), and yes, he did throw him off a cliff into the ocean. But he's so manic and demented that I just cannot not love him.
Melon is evidently a teacher at Haru's university. The plot thickens.
Anyone else see Melon as a Francis Dollarhyde-like figure? I mean, nowhere near as soft-spoken as The Great Red Dragon, but he's like a considerably more psychotic version of him.
Now, I theoretically could actually read the manga. I have a bit of time perhaps before the rest of the show concludes. But my backlog of this I need to read is looong. Still, as the actual ending draws closer, I'll be sad to see it over. They should adapt Beast Complex next.

I know that as a fandom we collectively love, marvel, and simultaneously laugh at the murderous face Will made when Hannibal said he found Francis Dollarhyde interesting, but what do you think would have been Will’s reaction (and actions) if Hannibal had indeed taken a “real liking” to Francis’ and started showing interest in meeting him or being with him or even running away with him? Showing him admiration for real?
Idk during the entire show I’ve felt that Will always worried about losing Hannibal’s total and undivided attention at all times. I think that moment when Hannibal shows admiration for the Red Dragon made Will feel seriously threatened. So what do you think Will would do?
Oh yes, I agree! Will absolutely hates the thought of not being special to Hannibal. I love the scene where they discuss Francis in canon:
Hannibal: The Dragon likely thinks you're as much a monster as you think he is.
Will: Is this a competition?
He sounds very pissed here, and my opinion is that he came to be angry about Molly but ended up being angry about Francis being more daring and impressing Hannibal. The conversation before this quote, including the deleted bit, seems to prove it.
Hannibal: Before he became the Red Dragon, this shy boy would not have dared any of this.
Will: Now he thinks he can do anything. Anything. Anything (he's so emotional here, he's nearly shaking).
Hannibal: Fear brushes the walls of your chest, circling inside you like a bat in a house. Get hold of it.
Will: The Dragon's gotten hold of his.
The words about 'competition' sound after this. So there is definitely some murder jealousy happening. Will sets up Chilton right after this. To show he can do anything, too?
If Hannibal showed more genuine attention to Francis and it went on for a while, I think Will would have made it his mission to hunt him and take him down - to get rid of competition and to prove his superiority to Hannibal, to himself, and to Francis. And he would have succeeded much more quickly than it had taken him to investigate Francis' case because the stakes would be much higher and much, much more personal.

Leave it behind, Let me follow
I wrote a fic! At least the first chapter!
Will graham is conflicted after NOT throwing himself and Hannibal off a cliff after killing Francis Dollarhyde. He promptly spirals and spends the fic trying to figure himself and his relationship with Hannibal out. Anticipate angst and domesticity and fluff and murder.

October Horror Movies #5
'Manhunter' (1986) - Dir. Michael Mann
Summary: Former FBI profiler Will Graham is back on the job to catch a dangerous serial killer—will he catch the killer before he strikes again? Will his sanity remain intact when he's done?
Michael Mann is so cool. Even in what is ostensibly a horror/thriller story, Mann has to include his love for synth/electronic music, his slick sense of fashion and decor, his attention to procedure and the chase in catching criminals. He's so fucking cool, dude.
Tumblr media
'Manhunter' isn't my first experience with the 'Red Dragon' story by Thomas Harris. I remember seeking out the 2002 movie of the same name (when I was younger I was really into Edward Norton—maybe a teenage celeb crush?) and then the novel. I recall getting about halfway through the novel before putting it down: I think I just didn't have the drive at the time to finish it.
As for the movie, 'Red Dragon,' I was a little obsessed with it, mainly because of Ralph Fiennes performance as serial killer Francis Dolarhyde: it's sad, scary, and often over the top, which makes it the movie's most distinct feature. Looking back now, I think he's the only real highlight of the movie, and even then, I have a few reservations about what they chose to adapt when compared to 'Manhunter'.
Tumblr media
I want to talk a little more shit about 'Red Dragon' that I think will segue into 'Manhunter's strength. Again, looking back, 'Red Dragon' feels kind of melodramatic: there's an orchestral score that permeates every pore of the film, the last half-hour has WAY too much going on—I really can't take it seriously.
Tumblr media
Some stuff is just funny—the burning body of Freddy Lounds (Philip Seymour Hoffman) rolling in a wheelchair downhill looks like something out of a 'Jackass' outtake, Francis scarfs down the Red Dragon painting like a dog loose in a paper bin; when Graham's kid is taken hostage by Dolarhyde, Graham roasts the shit out his flesh-and-blood to provoke the Tooth Fairy (I get WHY he did it, it's still kind of funny when it shouldn't be).
Pivoting to 'Manhunter' now—the movie cuts out some of the fat from the book and leaves a lean thriller that breezes through its two-hour runtime. I think this is helped by Mann's emphasis on procedure—the focus of the movie is on Graham (William Peterson) building a case piece by piece, collecting and analyzing evidence, enmeshing himself deeper into the psychology of a serial killer before it all comes together in one great, big "Eureka!" moment at the climax.
Tumblr media
Peterson's performance is spectacular. Will's empathy has left him burnt out in a way that feels more believable than Norton's take on the character. His self-hatred for identifying with serial killers, his tremendous love for his family and the victims, and his brilliant detective work make him entrancing to watch. He feels like a prototype of the "damaged but gifted" copotype we see so much in the modern era.
Tumblr media
Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde is no slouch either. Dollarhyde feels totally alienated, a prisoner of his own psyche. He's so worn down that he comes off as an emotionless husk, only breaking through with the occasional flash of empathy as Francis, or the cold rage of the Red Dragon.
Tumblr media
The rest of the cast is played perfectly—Brian Cox's Hannibal Lecktor is smarmy but radiates quiet menace: he feels like someone you'd meet on the street. Dennis Farina as Jack Crawford is the perfect authority figure—I particularly love his thick Chicago accent. Joan Allen as Reba McLane is played with confidence and kindness—which makes her victimization at the hands of the Dragon tragic and terrifying.
Tumblr media
And of course, how could you talk about a Michael Mann movie without discussing the production values. Almost every scene is color-coded—Lecter's stark white cell represents his purity, his self-acceptance; Graham is mostly seen in a black suit, a walking void devouring the emotions of those around him; his home is bathed in soothing blue light in the evening, right off of the ocean; anything related to the case is associated with green, for discovery and inquisitveness. Every frame is its own little piece of art, from the color to how it'scomposed.
Tumblr media
The best thing about the movie is the synth driven score, which somehow works. I was sort of worried going into the movie that the score would clash too much, but it didn't for me. You have ambient themes to emphasize dread and discovery, driving anthems to emphasize the emotional and thematic punch of a scene. Notably, the movie uses an eight-minute cut of Iron Butterfly's 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' at its climax, which heightens the terror of Dollarhyde menacing a captive Reba, while also taking his confrontation with Will and the cops to the next level.
'Manhunter' is sort of the odd-man-out of all the Hannibal Lecter adaptations, but I think it's the one I've been charmed the most by. Mann has a reputation as being the poster-boy for the slick '80s style, but I think his work displays a tremendous amount of rigor, from the production details to his empathetic character writing. On this platform I know NBC's 'Hannibal' is inarguably the most popular version of this story—but this movie is well worth a watch for an alternative take on characters you may be familiar with. Even then—it's a Michael f'n Mann movie. It's gonna be cool as shit.

Also from L.A. Takedown, here's Xander Berkeley as the OG Waingro. Berkeley has a bit part in Heat as Ralph ("Shut up, Ralph. SIT DOWN!!!"), Justine's effete, nerdy side piece. In his clothing is a prime example of Mann's thoroughly developed costuming language: abstract and/or geometric patterns to represent psychological instability (as a function of fragmentation, or permeability). You also see this in the almost Enid Marx-looking shirt Sadak wears in Blackhat, and Francis Dollarhyde's hideous splotchy button down in Manhunter. The brighter and louder or more fine-grained the print, the more trouble you're in.

Watched Manhunter last night and a few things jumped out at me:
It’s so weird to see a film with these characters from before their was a cohesive visual language for the franchise. It’s very Dario Argento, 80′s, Miami vice-ish in its color scheme and set design. And it’s a ton of that mid-80′s Art Deco revival that makes you think that someone has done cocaine off of every surface.
Brian Cox’s Lecter is unrecognizable as lecter. It’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination. He has like three scenes and he eats them up. But his lecter is... kinda greasy, a little bit more flamboyant, and less self possessed. Like when he’s talking with Will Graham from his jail cell and he has his feet propped up on the wall while he’s laying on the bed. It’s less menacing and more deranged, but it’s a choice and it works for this movie.
Tom Noonan just always kinda looked like that. Also his physicality and characterization as Francis Dollarhyde / The Red Dragon was so much more interesting and explosive and menacing than any other actors. I mean Ralph Fiennes’ was more monstrous, but also more cartoony. Noonan’s Dollarhyde is uncomfortably real.
Great actors with great performances all around, but the differences between this movie and the other’s (even including the TV show) feel so jarring that it creates an uncanny valley-esque sense when you watch it.
