April flurries? Ho-hum ...
In case we had forgotten the fact that spring above the 45th Parallel is always an iffy proposition, we got a brief, but robust, snow flurry Saturday morning at the lake.
No accumulation, but a reminder to never expect much from the vernal equinox which, as you my recall, came and went a month ago.
Saturday's weather event caused us to reminisce: the Mother's Day blizzard we experience one May near Charlevoix, the snowflakes that fell on the Fourth of July parade in the Upper Peninsula town of Paradise, where we vacationed for a few years ...
T.S. Eliot famously called April the cruelest month. But only if we expect it to behave like June.

Les Mis socials - official 2023 ranking
Here they are - The results of the "Worst post of 2023" competition and overall an archive for the worst posts the Les Mis social media teams have cursed us with this year.
1- "Who should Marius choose ?" - January 29
That one can be crowned "Worst post of the year" by far - The musical seems to once again have misunderstood three of its most important characters, reducing them to being mere love interests and defining Eponine and Cosette's relationship by a rivalry over Marius.
Tumblr media
2 - Cosette at Thanksgiving - November 23
The US competitor also took a very strong stand here - not only because it shows a deep misunderstanding of what the character of Cosette fundamentaly stands for, but also because it can be seen as offensive by many. Putting an abused and starved french child in front of a Thanksgiving meal, really ?
Tumblr media
3 - Mother's day - March 19
A picture of Madame Thénardier ? For Mother's day instead of Fantine ? It's more likely than you think. Although on this one the team gets extra credit for acknowledging that Madame Thénardier is not a good mother, which shows an unusual level of understanding when it comes to their own musical.
Tumblr media
4 - The Wimbledon post - July 15
Also known as That One Post Where Everything Is Wrong - and for sure not their best use of this promotional picture. From the tennis racket to the editing of Cosette's arms to make her look muscular, it is the proof we never needed that there should not, in fact, be a Cosette for every occasion. Not to mention they somehow messed up the colors of the French flag... not a good look for them.
Tumblr media
5 - Christmas Eve - December 24
Just a very disappointing post all around as an adequate way to wrap up this year. On the 200th anniversary of Valjean meeting Cosette in the woods, we got a quality pun and an edited picture that we could, at the very best, consider as inappropriate - would it only be because they added snowflakes to a barricade that was build in June.
Tumblr media
Honorable mentions for this year go to :
The Fourth of July post - that surprisingly did not make it in top 5. The US team might win the battle for "Most incorrect use of this Cosette picture" with this one - and it is made even worse by the fact they did not post anything for July 14, the national french holiday.
Tumblr media
The World cup one - similar to the Wimbledon post in that it just gets everything wrong overall, from the awful pun to putting Cosette in front of an english flag.
Tumblr media
Easter Cosette - not surprising, but still extremely disappointing.
Tumblr media
Christmas Cosette - in the same way, it is the exact same post as last year and never fails to disappoint.
Tumblr media
Any time they felt the need to put sunglasses on Cosette - which, honestly, was a lot.
A very uncanny use of emojis in every single post, that never gets less disturbing.
Overall a very good year to archive their fuck ups - but they still did not manage to beat the record set last year by the Queen's Jubilee post ! Maybe they will do even better in 2024 ?

Two Fanarts (FW and CB) in two different holidays: Independence Day (Fourth of July) and Tanabata (a Japanese holiday). I know both of these two holidays were already passed a month ago - 4th of July and Tanabata (July 7th), but it’s better late than never.
Hope you had a good Independence Day - Mine was good because my family and I went out to stay at my brother’s house for Independence Day/Summer vacation. ;)
1. FW in Independence Day/4th of July theme:
Victor F and Elsa were watching at the fireworks together, while they were both sitting on a picnic blanket outside (Yep, Elsa’s hand placed on Victor F’s hand). The rest of the kids (Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Weird Girl, and Edgar) were also watching at the fireworks. The children were amazed to see the fireworks on Independence Day night. (As for the dogs, Sparky and Persephone, they were inside at Victor F’s house together (after all, some dogs can be scared with fireworks)).
Pardon the picnic blanket - I tried my best while I looked up on a pattern for references. I also looked over the 4th of July picnic and fireworks for references from online. As for Elsa and Victor F’s Summer clothings - they were referenced from children’s vintage clothings (mostly 1950’s) that I looked up from online.
2. CB in Tanabata theme:
Victor VD and Victoria were watching the stars together at night - they were at the bridge outside from town. They were so amazed that they saw two big, bright stars together - represent Vega and Altair (Orihime and Hikoboshi).
Tanabata (meaning “Star Festival”) is a Japanese holiday that celebrates every seventh day on a seventh month (July 7). It was originated from a Japanese myth, Orihime and Hikoboshi (Vega and Altair) - about two lovers who were separated by the Milky Way (so, you can say that the couple were “star-crossed” lovers). So, every July 7th, the princess and the cow herder can reunite together by crossing the bridge (made by magpies) once a year. In tradition, people in Japan write their own wishes on colored papers, and then hang them on bamboo trees. The paper wishes were called “tanzaku.”
Even though these CB characters lived in Europe (England), I’m imagining that Victor VD and Victoria both read the tale of “Orihime and Hikoboshi” from the book of Japanese myths and folklores. Then much later on, they both go out at the bridge to look at the stars at night - to see the stars of Vega and Altair (And how about that? A Victorian couple were on a bridge to watch the stars - while the Japanese legend mentioned the bridge for a star-crossed lovers to across the Milky Way. Get the picture when it comes with bridges?).
Originally the background’s stars (in white) were going to be in different shapes and sizes - tiny dots and star shapes (small and large). However, I didn’t wanted the background’s stars to be mistaken as snowflakes. Then, much later on, I upgraded the background into a Starry -Night style (referenced from Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” - and even the “Cafe Terrace at Night” ) with few different colors (white, light blue, dark blue, and yellow).
Done with drawing pencils, art markers (Prismacolor, Copic, Fabre-Castell), color pencils, ink pens (including ink brush pen), and Posca markers. Enjoy.

Chapter two of Lonely Remnants, “I wish I'd find all the lonely remnants, Of you that left when your head cracked open”, is here! Short but wild. Surprisingly, no trigger warnings this time!
Tumblr media
Here are the extras!
- The lyrics for this chapter’s title are from “Coma Baby” by Nicole Dollanganger, and is also the origin of the fic’s title! I won’t go in depth as to how this song relates to the story, as that would be spoilers!
- “Painstakingly, she babysat the demon as it rinsed off the worst of what was left, then she used a pile of different washcloths and hand towels to wipe when she could off his face.” - If I had a nickel for every time a scene like this happened in my Beetlejuice fics, I’d have at least two.
- “My real physical form before I took this body was a bucket full of black goo. I could show ya, but I’d have to be qui-” - It was going to say it would have to be quick, because it wouldn’t have much time to return to the body.
- “It certainly hated the noise and the heat, growling and reminding her over and over that it needed to stay cool. She just rolled her eyes and kept doing her best to get the rotten little beast dry.” - IF I HAD A NICKEL-
- “A photo taken mid-snowball fight, Lawrence with an impish grin as he wound up to throw a rather large ball of snow at an unsuspecting Lydia. Lawrence, apparently having not grown up with snowy winters, sat bundled up in blankets on the couch, a cup of hot cocoa in hand. He was red-faced and obviously still freezing, but he was still smiling so brightly as Adam leaned down to kiss the top of his snowflake-covered head.” - Lawrence got absolutely decimated by Lydia for sneaking up on her like that. His ass got pelted with so many snowballs that Emily, Barbara, and Adam had to drag him inside so his southern-born ass wouldn’t get frostbite.
- “(Lydia’s passion for the arts seemed to have died with her mother, she thought. Just the idea of picking up a camera now made her sick to her stomach.)” - GUYS DON’T WORRY SHE WILL REGAIN HER PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY!!!
- “ “That’s me and my dad, Charles. He used to take you golfing every summer to bond with you, but you sucked at it.” The Shoggoth gave her a funny sort of look as she continued.” - It was not prepared for her to refer to it as Lawrence.
- “ “Emily…” the Shoggoth echoed, some strange pained look flickering through it’s eyes.” - Hmm. Interesting!
- “There was a pair of photos of a family escape room trip. All of them, photographed by the employees, standing with bright grins and excited thumbs up. Then, in the same setting, with all of them staring angrily at an anxiously grimacing Lawrence, who held a sign that read “We did not escape”.” - It was Lawrence’s fault they did not escape.
- “Clusters of photos of nature, of them all in camping gear, of Charles teaching Lawrence, Adam, and Lydia how to fish. Lawrence diving in to the lake and then coming back up with a large bass in his hands, to the slack-jawed Charles’ astonishment, and cheers from Lydia.” - A little bit of foreshadowing to Lawrence’s country roots! My boy used to wade through the Everglades barefoot and grab pythons and such without batting an eye.
- “Lawrence hunched over a campfire, arms outstretched and face twisted and shadowed in a ghoulish grin as he recounted some ghastly horror story that seemed to especially petrify his partners.” - He has always been very talented at scaring people :)
- “Pridefest in a nearby town, Lawrence having Lydia sat on his shoulders as she flew a transgender flag high and proud for him. Adam, Barbara, and Emily smiling and flocking to their sides, touting their own flags. (Charles had taken the picture, it was amateurish and shaky.)” - Lydia is mad, hence why the narration/she is calling him ‘amateurish’ and not mentioning him as much. Also, ha ha, Charles is the only cishet one! Loser /lh
- “Fourth of July, where Charles, Adam, and Barbara followed Lawrence extremely closely each year, but somehow still never caught him before he could set off the disastrous “Fat Dragon” fountain firework that was captured in a bright, blurry photo of all of them running and screaming from it after it had tipped over and shot in their direction.” - Based on true events from my own life. Also “Fat Dragon” is a reference to “The Babysitter”, a movie I have a love-hate relationship with.
- “He looked… very different. It was almost startling. His face was clean-shaven, his cheeks were sunken, his hair was long and unmanaged. His features were almost… softer. Certainly younger. Very different from the bold, loud, scruffy thirty-something she knew.” - It’s because he went on testosterone after this!
- “He wore tattered clothes and had fake blood smeared all over his face. A zombie. How ironic. She held up the photo, eliciting a strange, grating chuckle from the Shoggoth.” - The Shoggoth also sees the irony. It finds it very funny.
- “Lydia pushed the album aside to ensure a sudden deluge of tears didn’t ruin it’s pages. The Shoggoth flinched, brows furrowed in a sort of pained expression. “… y-… you alright, kiddo?” ” - Oh? What’s this? The freaky creature already showing signs of caring??
- “Lydia raised an eyebrow and tilted her head hard to one side. She could swear she saw Barbara flinch at the movement, but the pained expression was gone in a moment.” - That particular gesture reminded Barbara of Lawrence.
- “ “… is that why they never came to…. Visit?” She got the implication in an instant, it seemed, as Barbara solemnly nodded her head.” - By “visit” she means come pay for a gravesite.
- “It isn’t our story to tell, sweetheart. Especially not..” - She was going to say ‘while you’re so young’, as they had an agreement with Lawrence to have him tell Lydia what happened before he came to their town when she was older.
- “ “Oh my god, that explains the weird accent!” Her second mom nodded fervently, leaving the rag where it was as she went to make her way around the counter to Lydia. “He tried his best to hide it, but it always slipped out!” She lowered her voice in her best approximation of her brother’s own cadence as she mockingly drawled out, “now, pardon me, ma’am, but I do believe he did a right shit job of hidin’ it!” ” - Partially based on my own experience of being clocked immediately for my own stupid yeehaw accent, although mine is not from Louisiana. Lawrence hid it very well, but it came out on certain words like ‘pardon’, and he let it slip more in front of his loved ones.
- “All the while the Shoggoth hissed and shied away, but Barbara pursued it and demanded it get out of their home as she continued to hit it.” - Hehe, she wants it to leave but she’s not letting it leave
- “Lydia called, surging forward and going to grip the woman’s arm, but she was stoped by Adam suddenly returning to his senses and lifting her up under her armpits and trying to carry her away.” - Adam dad reflexes!!!

Man who threatened to kill Democratic election officials pleads guilty
By COLLEEN SLEVIN – Associated Press
Updated 17 hours ago
DENVER (AP) — A Colorado man repeatedly made online threats about killing the top elections officials in his state and Arizona — both Democrats — as well as a judge and law enforcement agents, according to a guilty plea he entered Wednesday.
Teak Ty Brockbank, 45, acknowledged to a federal judge in Denver that his comments were made “out of fear, hate and anger,” as he sat dressed in a khaki jail uniform before pleading guilty to one count of transmitting interstate threats. He faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced on Feb. 3.
Brockbank’s case is the 16th conviction secured by the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force, which Attorney General Merrick Garland formed in 2021 to combat the rise of threats targeting the election community.
"As we approach Election Day, the Justice Department’s warning remains clear: anyone who illegally threatens an election worker, official, or volunteer will face the consequences,” Garland said in a statement.
Brockbank did not elaborate Wednesday on the threats he made, and court documents outlining the plea agreement were not immediately made public. His lawyer Thomas Ward declined to comment after the hearing.
However, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Colorado said in statement that the plea agreement included the threats Brockbank made against the election officials — identified in evidence as Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold and former Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, now the state's governor.
Griswold has been outspoken nationally on elections security and has received threats in the past over her insistence that the 2020 election was secure. Her office says she has gotten more frequent and more violent threats since September 2023, when a group of voters filed a lawsuit attempting to remove former President Donald Trump from Colorado's primary ballot.
“I refuse to be intimidated and will continue to make sure every eligible Republican, Democrat, and Unaffiliated voter can make their voices heard in our elections,” Griswold said in a statement issued after Brockbank’s plea.
Investigators say Brockbank began to express the view that violence against public officials was necessary in late 2021. According to a detention motion, Brockbank told investigators after his arrest that he's not a "vigilante" and hoped his posts would simply "wake people up." He has been jailed since his Aug. 23 arrest in Cortez, Colorado.
Brockbank criticized the government's response to Tina Peters, a former Colorado county clerk convicted this year for allowing a breach of her election system inspired by false claims about election fraud in the 2020 presidential race, according to court documents. He also was upset in December 2023 after a divided Colorado Supreme Court removed Trump from the state's presidential primary ballot.
In one social media post in August 2022, referring to Griswold and Hobbs, Brockbank said: “Once those people start getting put to death then the rest will melt like snowflakes and turn on each other,” according to copies of the threats included in court documents. In September 2021, Brockbank said Griswold needed to “hang by the neck till she is Dead Dead Dead,” saying he and other “every day people” needed to hold her and others accountable, prosecutors said.
Brockbank also posted in October 2021 that he could use his rifle to “put a bullet” in the head of a state judge who had overseen Brockbank's probation for his fourth conviction for driving under the influence, under the plea agreement, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors say Brockbank also acknowledged posting in July 2022 that he would shoot without warning any federal agent who showed up at his house. Prosecutors earlier said in court documents that a half dozen firearms were found in his home after his arrest, including a loaded one near his front door, even though he can't legally possess firearms due to a felony conviction of attempted theft by receiving stolen property in Utah in 2002.
The investigation was launched in August 2022 after Griswold's office notified federal authorities of posts made on Gab and Rumble, an alternative video-sharing platform that has been criticized for allowing and sometimes promoting far-right extremism, according to court documents.
And although Brockbank only pled guilty for threats made between September 2021 and August 2022, prosecutors say he's made more since then.
In December 2023, after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled Trump should not appear on the state's primary ballot, Brockbank allegedly told his stepfather in a text that he was adding the four judges who backed removing Trump to "my list." The U.S. Supreme Court later restored Trump to the ballot.
And this July, prosecutors say, Brockbank continued to threaten Griswold because her office triggered the investigation of Peters by notifying authorities about the data breach in 2021.
Peters was sentenced to nearly nine years behind bars this month for allowing access to the county's election system to a man affiliated with My Pillow chief executive Mike Lindell — a prominent promoter of false claims that voting machines were manipulated to steal the election. Authorities investigated separate threats made against her trial judge, Matthew Barrett. Most of the messages appear to have been strongly worded opinions but none appeared to rise to the level of a crime, Mesa County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Wendy Likes said Tuesday.
In 2022, a Nebraska man pleaded guilty to making death threats against Griswold in what officials said was the first such plea obtained by the Election Threats Task Force.
The Justice Department task force's longest sentences so far — 3.5 years in prison — were handed down in separate cases involving election officials in Arizona. In one case, a man who advocated for “a mass shooting of poll workers,” posted threatening statements in November 2022 about two Maricopa County officials and their children, prosecutors said.
In the other, a Massachusetts man pleaded guilty to sending a bomb threat in February 2021 to an election official in the Arizona Secretary of State’s office.
Another man was sentenced on Monday to 30 months in prison for sending threatening messages to an Maricopa County Elections Instagram account.

SHE TASTED METAL IN HER MOUTH — blood? — she didn’t quite know in her delirium.
One moment, she’d been scrambling in a crawl with George Luz as artillery smothered their surroundings, splintering trees left and right in their path. In the blowing chaos, they’d heard Skip and Penkala beckoning them to the safety of their foxhole — come on! — their hands, scarred from frostbite and cuticles bound with dirt, had been extending across the snow like lifelines. Until the whir of a direct whistled through the bitter air of snowflakes, and disintegrated the two men before them into pieces; not even flesh, truly, just ash in the icy dirt. In the sound of the explosion, had come a horrendous echo as if it were the anguished cry of God. She had only been a few inches ahead of George, her hand grazing the icy fingertips of Penkala when the direct whirred itself into their foxhole, imploding with a force that tossed her back like a rag doll into the snow.
Lying in the snow, her glazed eyes beared witness to the simmering aftermath of the ambush, the stray flares akin to fireworks on the Fourth of July. Her brothers were feverish admirers of the explosive arrays of color, often tinkering with methods of how they could make the explosions more remarkable, boundless in their spectacle of light in the starry sky. She’d set off a fair share of their concoctions and the adrenaline that surged in her veins with each crackle, whistle, and ignition was addictive. She’d be laughing boundlessly with them in the projected, kaleidoscopic light, a few ashes of their creations intermingling with her pigtails and their tousles of short hair.
However, she wasn’t laughing now.
Her throat was throbbing, her body vigored with a heat she hadn’t felt in her months in Bastogne. Her stiff and aching back was cradled subtly in the grinds of snow — a fine mixture of blood, her own and other wounded soldiers, splatters across the pristine, crystal white. Her legs throbbed with oozing burns on skin that had been exposed by shrapnel from the explosion, twitching with her strained endeavors to claw away to safety before another deluge opened the heavens into another hell. She wanted to crawl over this slush and blood, over the spent shells and the branches, yet the cold was seeping into her wounds and the furnace of anguish was dizzying.
The pain overwhelmed a portion of her brain, as if draining every ounce of energy from her exhausted body. It was as if some invisible flame were held against the pallid goosebumps of her skin whenever a radiance of adrenaline graced her weary nerves, and she’d shakily toss herself onto her side to acquire an inch towards salvation — yet, she wondered if there was such. Skip and Penkala had been in their foxhole, a sanctuary from the daily deluges of death, and they’d still been obliterated where they stood. Throw salvation into the shitter when it came to war.
Abruptly, there was a pressure encompassing her forearm, it being the trembling hands of George as his distressed expression wavered into the bleared snowfall, his disheveled brown hair askew in his face as wind bustled it about, “You gotta get up!”
Y/N hastily shook her head, bracing her callus hands against his forearm as he bolstered her upper half from the bloodied and arid dirt, “It fucking hurts.” She peered at him through cold-bitten eyelashes as if he had three-heads. Don’t make me.
“I know, I know, but,” he commenced with a flurry of smoky breath through his gritted teeth, a distant explosion rattling the ground beneath them, “Goddammit. We need to get you help, okay? You ain’t bleeding too much…” His frenzied, wide eyes gave a once over to her uniform with a confirming, relieved nod to himself, hastily yet tenderly continuing to ease her up.
She gasped through gritted teeth at the impressive surge of agony trembling her petite frame as he hauled her up with an arm about her waist, urging shuffles through the powdery snow with their rawed feet. Just leave me, George!
“Medic! Medic!” George clamored with a trickle of cracks from his scratchy throat, as he essentially maneuvered both the weights of themselves and their gear through the churns of snow.
Y/N dubiously leaned meager stretches of strength into her feet yet cowered as if her foot met a flame rather than ice — she was a paratrooper….yet couldn’t even fucking walk on her own, muster the strength to do so. She had been banged up by a few shreds of shrapnel in Normandy, walked the entire night with a makeshift tourniquet while following a few other lost Easy soldiers, one being her boyfriend, Donald Malarkey. Her glazed eyes impossibly widened as George’s demands for a medic blurred in her hearing; both of his best friends were dead. And it was only fitting, devastatingly so, that she’d be the one to tell him.
“Luz! What happened?!” Eugene Roe’s lanky figure came hurtling over a mound of frosty dirt, hand securing his helmet atop his head as it quavered with his hasty steps. In the hazy smoke of the deluge’s aftermath, it had been rather difficult to depict just where the medic had come bounding from — however, that’s how it always seemed with the young man; he’d come when he was needed, and one may often ponder on just how he’d get there.
“She was near one of the directs when it exploded!” George panted incredibly fast as if his system was ramshackled with gradually increasing grief, now that the adrenaline had washed away. Roe bounded up to the pair of them, easing an arm to replace George’s as the man’s lip vaguely quivered, “Skip and Penkala….their foxhole got hit. They’re…they’re gone.”
“You go get yourself some rest, Luz, okay? Lip said we’re alright for now,” Roe solemnly managed, cracking a meager smile across his chapped lips, regarding how George gazed around the snowy wasteland with a distant glint in his swollen brown eyes.
He eventually bowed his head before patting Y/N’s shoulder, the tremble of his hand radiating through the cloth of her jacket, “Take good care of her, eh?”
“‘Course,” his voice was scratchy, his pink nose twitching with a cough shackling his body as George dubiously trudged away through the snow, his hand fumbling for his cigarettes in his pouch.
“You sick, Gene?” Y/N murmured in attempt to alleviate the nauseating pain from her misery and wounds, the pair of them hobbling through the snow towards Eugene and Spina’s foxhole.
“Nah, just the cold — Louisiana ain’t never this cold, I ain’t used to it,” he shrugged whilst tweaked the place of his hand on the curve of her torso, peering towards her from beneath the contour of his helmet, “You shouldn’t be worrying about me, ma’am, anyway. You’re the one who is injured.”
Y/N mustered a nerve to smile — ma’am, Eugene Roe was undoubtedly and to a fault, a gentleman — and, yes, she was above him in rank, but he was a year her senior, nearly a foot taller than her. Such an endearment was uncanny to her.
“Someone’s gotta look after you, too, Eugene,” she asserted, tone wandering with haze from morphine she hadn’t noticed he injected. And, he just nodded away slightly at her words as they approached the foxhole, Spina mounting the crumbling dirt of it to aid them the distance to it.
THE NEWS OF THE direct hitting Skip and Penkala’s foxhole fell upon Donald Malarkey before she secured the opportunity to do so herself; George Luz had come numbly lumbering into a foxhole where Malarkey nursed a wrinkled cigarette between his teeth whilst he prepared food. Luz had mumbled lowly of how Y/N and him had been scrambling in a crawl towards the foxhole in seek of safety from the ambush of artillery, how Skip and Penkala had been yearning in grasp towards them — screaming their names through the descent of fiery hell — and how a direct whistled from above, landed in the abyss of the dirt, and exploded, shattering the two men to ashy pieces. How Y/N had been just mere inches ahead in the snowy distance, yet was injured by shrapnel and ripples of heat that would’ve — should have — blistered his own skin.
And Luz wasn’t shocked when the redhead blundered out from the foxhole almost breathlessly, flicking away his smoldering cigarette to the frigid earth. Luz snuffed it out haphazardly with the tip of his boot as he kindled his own fresh cigarette from his rumpled pack, shakily inhaling the toxic, invisible poisons to his aching lungs.
Donald Malarkey trudged with anchors in his tired muscles through the snow towards Roe’s foxhole. He heaved his beanie over the greasy tousle of his crimson hair, noticing how his fingers quivered from gradual shock rather than the bitter air. Muck and Penkala were dead. Y/N was injured…to what extent he didn’t know.
“Roe!” He snapped through the evening briskness as he caught glimpse of the silhouette of the medic bustling towards his foxhole, hands nestled beneath his armpits to absorb the scarce warmth of his body heat.
“Malarkey,” Roe nodded curtly in acknowledgement, peering his glossy eyes out from beneath the rim of his helmet, “‘ya hurt?”
Don briskly shook his head, nearly too belligerently, “I heard Y/N got hit — she here?”
The shadow of a helmet swayed in the vanishing daylight within the foxhole, as if the individual had perked at the mention — rather aggressive — of the female paratrooper. He didn’t stall for Roe’s agitated response, striding the dainty distance to the fringe of the foxhole, face as red as his hair.
Y/N was knelt against the curve of arid dirt, a cloth bandage cinched around her thigh with blemishes of blood dotting its white canvas, the diminishing daylight grazing vaguely over the dirt and lacerations on the highs of her cheekbones and the crook of her forehead. Hell. She looked as if she had been ravaged by hellhounds, drained of morality by Hades himself. She was far cries away from the spitfire woman that defied stereotypes years ago in Toccoa.
“You found me,” she murmured bluntly, pale fingers picking apart the resemblance of food in her K-Ration, dropping away the shreds in distaste.
“You could’ve been killed, Y/N,” he hissed bitterly, stooping to the icy circumference of the foxhole, boots crackling the wintry concoction beneath them,“And it seems like you don’t give two fucks that you almost were obliterated.”
Her anxious fingers halted in a hasty reaction, almost cramping at the abrupt cease of movement in their frigid tendons. And she laughed. It was a sputter of cynicism and miff that bubbled from her chapped lips as she fluidly pushed herself to her feet, the K-Ration tumbling aside. Her balance was thwarted by the anguished blasts of soreness in her leg, a hand clenching the grassy edge of the foxhole to bolster her achy figure upwards.
“That’s because I saw two of my best friends get shot to hell right in front of me,” she callously asserted, her knuckles thronging with white as the pressure upon the edge swirled in her frustration, “When I should’ve been, too!”
The aghast and bewilderment that irked the dullness on his face made her aware that her choked up words had opened a Pandora’s Box. The one small comment had stirred the hurricane in the both of them and their blazing eyes strung in a tightrope in the biting air. Their steady breaths canopied in front of their faces as they glowered at each other.
“You could’ve at least found me and told me you got hurt,” he chastised, a clipped reprimanding that had her feeling more so a red-handed child rather than a soldier.
“Ah,” she clicked her tongue, jabbing it fleetingly against the concave of her cheek as to contemplate her wit-drawn remark, “So, you could’ve berated me sooner?”
Her eclipse of his concern had the flush of his cheeks once more rivaling the shade of his hair — wisps of crimson against pallid complexion, distinct from those caused by the whip of arctic air.
“Because I care about you, okay?!” His true desire was to have his tone be a verbal clobber — beckon the self-preservation to her mind through some marvel — yet had to settle for a searing and acrimonious murmur in the girdle of a noise mandate.
Y/N was emotionally far past his counsel, composure shot by the regret and irritation she festered and allowed to strengthen with each moment done.
“Anybody would be fucking grateful they were alive,” she muttered, her throat aching with the pinch of a cry, “But that’s not me — if I was to be grateful to be alive, I wouldn’t be a true soldier. There are so many others who deserve to be alive instead…be here instead, go home instead….” Y/N cleared her throat of the swirls of temptation to break down crying, sniffing her pinkened nose whilst shaking her head, “And I know you feel the same so don’t even dare reprimand me, Malarkey.”
The irate snap of his surname radiated just how pissed she was presently with him, how her fury rolled off her in tidal waves, a furnace in the Bastogne frigid damnation. And he opened his mouth but never uttered a syllable. She was right. Of course — she was notorious for her tendency to be right. He’d be a foolish man to conceal the survivor’s guilt that gnawed at the linings of his stomach each day, each moment a fatality was broadcasted across the company. It was a torment that sliced deeper within his conscious, sharp knives carving out his morality with each dead body he saw, each name he heard from the casualties report.
A paper-like pressure on his clenched fist roused him to reality, away from his mind that gnawed with too many emotions to start processing. Her scarred, ivory hand encompassed his larger palm, a bustle of trembling erupting in their clasp as she peered into the dead look molded into his eyes — eyes that she was accustomed to seeing depths of youth and warmth within. Neither was nowhere to be seen.
“Don,” she beckoned, shifting her weight from the burning twinge on her injured leg, crinkles of a wince on the corners of her eyes. She gulped away the discomfort — ruminating on how she wasn’t keen on being the recipient of such obstinate attitude, “Come on … look at me.”
He collapsed the kneel bolstering him, a whoosh into the crinkled snow while glimpsing at her, the pain she subdued with the scraps of strength in her drained soul and body, the juxtaposing earnestness of her eyes. She wrenched his hand subtly, beckoning wordlessly for him to get into the foxhole for, God forbid, another deluge of artillery hail down on them. Numbly, he sank into the depth of the foxhole, resembling more of a ghost from a horror story than a breathing human being.
“Your leg,” Don muttered bluntly, beady eyes upon the haphazardly wrapped bandage encompassing her thigh, gaze moving along the crimson splotches that didn’t vanish in the evening gleam.
“Just a few minor burns,” Y/N shrugged, casting a sidelong glimpse up towards him as he crouched against the icy sludge, “Roe says they’ll be healing in a week or so.”
He shakily nodded whilst propelling his eyes impossibly fast from her, staring at the crevices of ravaged dirt before him, a habit many Easy soldiers developed in the dragging hours they were pinned in their foxholes. And even though things were rather precarious between the pair of them, she still plucked the clenched hand from atop his thigh, thumb absentmindedly trialing over his split knuckles.
“You should get some sleep,” she asserted, well aware he was a constant subduer of slumber, preferring to smoke through his cigarette packs and penning letters to his mother back home during the night, “Can’t keep yourself alive if you’ve got one eye shut.” She was acutely aware of such since she would offhandedly stay awake with him, chuckling beneath a tarp about childhood shenanigans and aiding the penmanship of his letters.
His eyes were opaque with slumber when they glanced towards her — nearly cynical — as if wondering just why she’d say such, fathom how she thought he could sleep right now.
“You first,” he dared yet she knew from the subtle grin that cracked a spiderweb of content on his face, that she had shattered even a fraction of his woe — Donald Malarkey couldn’t settle with being swamped with morose, that just wasn’t the ginger’s ways. Even war couldn’t hinder that.
His chapped fingertips skimmed gingerly on the rosy ample of her cheek once a comfortable silence glutted the cold, heaps of exhaustion flushing into her own eyes at the familiarity of his touch — the subtle warmth of it on her rawly bitter skin. His thumb brushed her bottom lip rather fleetingly, openly admiring her for a slim second before the crumbling of snow indicated someone approaching, and his hand fell away.
“You both sleep,” Roe’s voice beckoned lowly from the brink of the foxhole, as he tapped the bow of his boot against the rear of both of their helmets. His voice was muffled vaguely by the cigarette that bobbed at the corner of his mouth, “I’ll wake ‘ya in an hour.”
“Thanks, Gene,” Y/N nodded faintly back his way as he trudged through the snowfall towards an intact tree trunk.
Her head felt nearly embedded with surges of lead as it settled onto Don’s shoulder, her eyes swollen with anchors of weariness from sleepless nights and the allure to release into slumber swelled by him stroking her the hair that bustled from beneath her helmet. Whilst he shut his eyes, lips shifted to the icy ivory of her cheek in a delicate kiss, her shoulders composing away from their tension at the warmth blossoming across her cheek from the contact.
And for the first time in weeks, they soundly slept.

A year and a week - 372 poems - now all in one PDF:
ertylerex .itch.io/day-poetry ko-fi .com/s/dcf40775bb patreon .com/posts/day-poetry-2023-78041331
If you give it a read (or just like these excerpts), let me know what you think. ID and transcripts are under the cut:
Image description: A crop of the cover of my poetry compilation. It is a photograph of a sun-gilded storm cloud swelling behind shadowed clouds. The text reads Day Poetry, a complete poem-a-day diary by ABV. The poem excerpts are as follow:
May 9, 2022 Even after all this time and change, I'll tell you who I am in every certain term I have, If you come to me through the ivory gate, Know that I wear a crown of horn; Put your arm around me if you will, I am the shade that you recall, If my voice can reach you still, listen well, I mean not to deceive, not to mislead, not to withdraw; You will leave me one more time, And not look back before you reach the door, Whosoever leads you now is no shade of mine, If she remains, I am no more.
End first poem. The second poem follows:
June 26, 2022 I do not know about intelligent design. In an ultra-high-definition photograph of a bee, I can see its salt-fired face, I know what techniques to recreate it with On paper, canvas, woodblock, but I have a reference point, and, anyway, They've been drawing bees for eight thousand years. When a light falls evenly across my face, halving it, I can marvel At the hidden symmetry, the same as a seedpod, as a mountain, as two near stars That I see and think, how perfect, that I can reflect in my work and think, too prefect. When an egg balances on a spatula, when a leaf balances atop the water, Rock atop rock, world atop the turtle, yes, When water and wind make music, a kitten and fox sound human, When the word comes after eight thousand years of language, the light comes after Eight thousand light-years of distance, when I am half shadow, I know all things, I see what it is, name it, I walk around among them on Earth, which is everything, Two near stars in my mind, receiving the light.
End second poem. Third poem follows:
July 22, 2022 You will pull me out of the water and not find the end of me 'til morning; I kneel in the bottom of the boat, teeth like embers in my mouth; Your hands are cold.
End third poem. Fourth poem follows:
November 9, 2022 If I had five people I could trust, this would be different, But I withdraw trust as easily as I fall asleep, I lay in the dark listening and wondering, do snowflakes make a sound as they fall through the air, or only when they hit the ground?
Trudging through the snow alone, I fold my hands over my eyes against the light like my heart closing, Every stride sours the stomach to think of them needing turned aside, This would be different, this would be done, this shovel makes a dull thud against the ice and my arms shake, do they make a sound as they cut through the air, or only when they hit the ground?
End fourth poem. Fifth poem follows:
December 15, 2022 Wind's outside, content to have all the world, save me, And winter, SHE DOES TURN IN HER SLEEP, softly, pianissimo, Will she wake to find me here? Won't she, and know me, And know the loss I suffer even as SHE GIVES ME BACK THE LIGHT, slowly, adagissimo, That was stolen before she ever woke? We are always meeting at the end.
End fifth poem. Sixth poem follows:
January 27, 2023 One more absurd use of time, gone ahead with nothing to bring back, I didn't plan this far ahead, my hopes are as far-flung as that star that just went supernova, unreachable, (meaning) I cannot fold my mind around the thought of distance into any shape that means anything, I've travelled the same highway both ways for two decades already without ever once wanting (wanting) to be anywhere else, is that ambition? My understanding can unfold outward and take sympathetic forms without knowing how one end of the crease connects me to anything else, just like a hope of a plan and the supernova a star never thinks of becoming, (but then) I'm burnt down to a fine, soft powder that darkens the hand and shines just a little in the sun.
End ID.

I love WikiFandom
Okay so I just found out that there are official dates/years about when Owari no Seraph is happening and when characters were born by year. Yuu would be about my age by now if it was all real.
Yuu was born in October 16, 2004
Mika was born in May 1, 2004
I’m from July 16, 2005
ACCORDING TO MY CALCULATIONS THE WAR IS IN 2020′S
Yuu was last seen in Hyakuya orpahanage at age 8, before and after Mika helped him and other orphans get back to the building soon after vampires released the virus (2013)
There were small memories of Yuu, being nagged by Mika to join his family more than one time, they could be 8 and 10 by that time (2013&2015)
Yuu escaped from vampires at age 12, meanwhile Mika was turned into a vampire by Krul, all after all the other orphans were killed by Ferid (2017)
Four years pass and Yuu becomes a soldier to fight vampires probably at age 15 assumed on the weather he wasn’t lawfully and physically 16 yet but Mika could already be 16 since warmer seasons couldn’t really be visible amongst city ruins (2021)
The rest of the war displayed in anime lasts about a year if you take weather change, snow, as proof (2021-2022):
At some point it started to snow (Mika watching and catching snowflakes in his hand; it could imply him worrying about missing Yuu’s birthday for the fourth time) so the year was about to end without New Year’s celebration (2021)
Last timeskip in anime said few months later then shows summer-like atmosphere by the beach which means Mika already turned 17 and Yuu was stil 16 (2022)
So according to those calculation I could be sent to war and the world would be nothing but ruins, soon to be rebuilt, right now.

White picket fences
Barbed wire and trenches
Trick or treat, merry christmas
Howdy neighbor, thank you Jesus
Oh what is he building in that painted lady?
A participation trophy wife, or blonde, blue eyed baby
Wide eyed and wired, the snap crackle pop of the Geiger
Camouflage billboards for lead lined brooks brothers
You elbow the jukebox and sing duck and cover
And breed out our incisors, feed on white wine and Pfizer
It don’t look like survival, but buy now or die
Suburbiaaaa~
You’re not aloneeee~
The lights are onnnnn~
But no one’s home (so welcome home)
Myers Briggs, OKULTRA
Takes a village to fake a whole culture
Your ear to the playground, your eye on the ball
Your head in the gutter, your brains on the wall
Oh well, home is where heart is
You ain’t homeless, but you’re heartless
It’s the safest on the market
But you still gotta watch where you park it
So give me your half life crisis
I can tell you don’t know where paradise is
Where parasites don’t care what your blood type is
Only pheromones
Is it true that a snowflake only matters in a blizzard
Everyone knows that, nobody knows that
Everybody’s all up in my, everybody’s all up in my
Everybody’s all up in my BUSINESS
Suburbiaaaaa~
Where you belonggggg~
The lights are onnnnn~
But no one’s home (so welcome home)
Chameleon peacocks are talk of the town
Well, word gets around on hit number stations
He cums radiation
The dog bites the postman, while basement eyes dream
Of a night at the drive in, with an AR-15
I dropped my eyeballs in the bonfire
We fucked on a bed of nails
I caught kuro from your sister and died laughing in jail
Smell those screaming teenage sweetbreads on the Fourth of July grill
Smile and wave boys, kiss the cook, live laugh and love
Please pass the pills
It’s only culture, it’s only culture, it’s only
Cultureee~
Sulfur smoke and soot
You learned to torture house cats like vultures
You cocked and sucked your lack of empathy
Pulled the trigger with your foot to prove you’ve got
BLOOD
Didn’t they want your blood?
So why apologize for being blue and cold
Blood, didn’t they want your blood?
So why apologize when you’ve turned blue and cold
🎶🎶🎶🎶
It’s only culture, it’s only culture, it’s only
Ah- ah- ah- ah
Culture’s not your friend
Hey fuck your culture, I ain’t got no culture
It’s only culture and it’s more afraid of you than you are of it!
C’mon drink that blood!
Didn’t they want your blood
So why apologize when you’ve turned blue and cold
Blood, didn’t they want your blood?
So don’t apologize for being blue and cold
Were you Nabokov to a Salinger
Were you Jung to Freud or Dass to a Leary
Were you mother, daughter, subject, and author
You don't make the rules, you just write them down and
Do it by the book you throw around
Do you know the difference between blazing trails and slash-and-burn
Going against the grain and catching splinters
You pull out your Rorschach like a paint-by-numbers treasure map
The ink upon on your jigsaw piece traces you back to your fingerprints
Well Lot he had his lot in life, Job his job and I guess you'll too, and die
The Lord looked down, said, "hey, you're only mortal"
Giveth and taketh away 'till things come out a certain way
Leave you wondering when they might go back to normal
Leave you wondering why they can't have just been normal

July TBR--
Tumblr media
This is going to be another month that is split between books for the Christmas in July TBR and a regular TBR. I only physically own three books for this month’s TBR while the rest will be coming from my Kindle, NetGalley, or the library. I’m excited for a few more Christmas books, but I’m most excited to see how I feel about a hyped new release AND one of my friend’s favorite books.
1. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee-- I picked up the first book in the Montague Siblings series on recommendation from a friend. I want to say it was about a year ago when I got is so it’s about time I actually read the thing. I’ve heard that it’s pirate-y as well as historical. We follow Monty as he embarks on a Grand Tour of Europe with his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice. But his family has expectations of him--to take over the family’s estate upon his return. I don’t know a ton about this one and I kind of want to keep it that way until I get the chance to pick it up towards the middle of the month.
2. Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells-- The third novella in the Murderbot Diaries. I’m continuing my reread before the new one comes out later this year. We continue to follow Murderbot as it attempts to help the floundering case against GrayCris and avoid the questions about just where Dr. Mensah’s SecUnit has gone.
3. Starsight by Brandon Sanderson-- Another reread for the month. I’ll be reading the second book in the Skyward series. A lot of people didn’t like the fact that we are yet again following Spensa in a flight school, but I enjoyed the fact that the universe has expanded so much. Yes, we do see her in flight school with all new characters but the difference in species and the different political issues popping up were things I found to be so interesting. I’m looking forward to the reread.
4. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (Library)-- Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders. Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general--also known as her tough-as-talons mother--has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise. This one is so hyped right now on the bookish spaces of the internet so I just gotta know what I’ll think of this one.
5. Between Us by Mhairi McFarlane (NetGalley)-- Roisin and her boyfriend Joe join their friends for a weekend away to celebrate a birthday, an engagement, and the launch of Joe’s new TV show. But tension starts to rise when they watch the first episode of Joe’s new drama and she realizes that the private things she told him--which should have stayed between them--are right there on the screen. With her friend group in chaos, and newly single, Roisin returns home to avoid the unwanted attention. While there an old friend becomes the shoulder she can lean on.
6. Snowflakes and Sparks by Sophie-Leigh Robbins (Kindle)-- Suzie is an L.A. girl who gets volunteered to help keep a small town bookstore going after the manger dies. When she makes a return to Old Pine Cove ten years after her embarrassing exit, Suzie comes face to face with the one person she never wanted to see again. But Alex is a cute, charming, baking yoga instructor living right next door. Will old sparks fly again? Or will Suzie be overwhelmed by her past?
7. Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison (Kindle)-- Stella enters a contest to try to save the Christmas tree farm she’s loved since she was a kid. But in order to make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays she lied on her application and said she owned the farm with her boyfriend. Enter best friend Luka. Fake dating around the holidays? I’m so here for it.
8. The Christmas Wager by Holly Cassidy (NetGalley)-- This book is pitched as an enemies-to-lovers holiday rom-com set in a quaint town about a city girl and a small-town boy competing in the town’s annual holiday games. This one sounds so cute and I’m so prepared to find another favorite NetGalley Christmas in July ARC. It’s three years running of loving NetGalley ARCs about Christmas romances. Let’s do it again.
9. The Christmas Murder Game by Alexandra Benedict (Library)-- Last year I read a murder mystery centered around Christmas for the final book of Christmas in July and I plan on doing that again. This one is centered around a moneyed family who has an unsolved murder in their past which has outcasted the murdered family member’s child. The annual Christmas Game is afoot at Endgame House and Lily Armitage has no interest in attending. Until she receives a letter from her aunt promising that this year’s riddles will give her not only the keys to Endgame but also to the identity of her mother’s murderer.

Seasonal Decor: Brighten Your Holidays Year-Round with Neon Lights
The holidays are a time for dazzling decor, festive vibes, and memorable celebrations. Whether you’re hosting a cozy gathering at home, an office party, or a grand event, LED neon light are the perfect way to elevate the atmosphere. These glowing masterpieces add a modern, vibrant touch to your decor—no matter the season. From custom designs to bold shapes and colors, neon lights provide endless possibilities to make your space shine. Here’s how you can use neon lights to add a festive touch to your holiday and seasonal celebrations.
Spring: A Fresh Glow for a Fresh Start
Spring symbolizes renewal, with blooming flowers and bright skies inspiring decor. LED neon lights shaped like tulips, butterflies, or sunbursts can perfectly capture this energy. Use pastel colors like mint green, soft pink, or warm yellow to add a cheerful vibe to your home or event. Hang neon signs in windows or along entryways to welcome guests with a fresh, lively glow. Tip: Create a custom spring-themed sign with your favorite quote or family name for a personalized touch.
Summer: Amplify the Fun with Neon Vibes
Summer brings warmth, outdoor parties, and plenty of opportunities for creative decor. Transform your space with tropical-themed neon signs Texas loves, such as palm trees, flamingos, or ocean waves. Pair cool blues with fiery oranges for a stunning contrast that embodies summer fun. Whether it’s a backyard barbecue or a poolside soirée, neon lights set the perfect tone. Perfect for: Pool parties, Fourth of July celebrations, and summer wedding receptions.
Autumn: Add a Cozy Glow to Crisp Evenings
Autumn is all about cozy gatherings and earthy tones. Imagine glowing pumpkins, falling leaves, and warm oranges lighting up your home. Use LED neon light signs to accentuate seasonal decor, making your space perfect for Halloween parties or Thanksgiving dinners. Combine neon with candles and string lights for a magical atmosphere. Get Creative: Design custom spooky signs for Halloween or a "Grateful Hearts" sign for Thanksgiving.
Winter: Sparkle Through the Long Nights
Winter nights feel magical with the soft glow of neon lights. Picture snowflake-shaped neon decor illuminating your living room or a glowing "Let It Snow" sign above your mantel. Neon blues, whites, and icy purples evoke the serenity of winter, while reds and greens create a festive Christmas vibe. Whether for a New Year’s Eve bash or a family Christmas gathering, neon lights make every moment shine brighter.
Celebrate Every Occasion with Neon
From Valentine’s Day to July 4th fireworks, neon lights are a versatile decor element for any celebration. Neon signs Texas customers adore come in all shapes and themes, from romantic hearts to patriotic stars.
