WIP WEDNESDAY 🩸
Tagged by @hemlocksandfoxgloves @fruchtfliege @honestlydarkprincess
“Forever a victim. Never a hero, or dare I say, a villain?” Liam catches the last drop of blood and Theo’s body shakes with undeniable fear.
There’s a staggering wonder at how much he’s enraged, but also turned on at the same time.
“I never said I was a victim.” Theo sputters, growing colder and more aggressive at the thought of being seen as damaged.
Theo’s not damaged. There’s nothing left of him to break. Pieces maybe, but only remnants of himself that hang around. Only to make him feel slightly more normal than he is.
“You never said you were anything. Your sense of purpose is consumed by staying alive and out of Scott’s way.” Liam viciously says, a perfectly honest assessment and Theo shoves him away, no longer being able to hold in his anger.
“Oh, don’t be too bold Teddy.” Liam growls.

I talked about this already to some extent. But let’s round it up. Because there’s new DA people and I’m v tired but also invested at this point.
Also there’s a broader point here. Several tbh.
When people are kind of flailing around looking for the source of problems with a piece of media, particularly an unchallenging piece of media, and resorting to a shallow set of ‘criticisms’ that gesture at real issues, often there are fundamental flaws in said piece of media. They’re just being misidentified to the point of nonsense.
When something is by all metrics genuinely well done AND spectacular in execution, you do not get this. You get straightforwardly stupid people crying about Atreus acting like a child. You get transparently bigoted or immature people whining about Ellie or Joel having coherent arcs.
When something is by most metrics competently written but lacking in execution in multiple ways AND it makes ‘representation’ a selling point. It’s gonna get both column 1 and column 2 in force. This makes everything very loud and very stupid forever. I refuse to be held captive by that so I will keep talking about real things. Because in column 1 there’s an attempt to get at the actual problems, just without the needed vocabulary and experience.
And yes there’s overlap in column 1 & 2. I call it the clown show. That’s just not everything that’s happening.
The actual problems in Veilguard are the problems with BioWare as a whole. And mostly they have to do with motivation and ethics. Anyone who wants to seriously understand what’s gone so terribly wrong with every game release since Origins needs to reckon with this.
This company refuses to consistently define its storytelling values within the game world/s beyond ‘yay friendship’ and ‘trauma sad’. This is why the use of sexual violence in origins is there to shock 12 year olds. If that game were well written and actually meant for mature adults, sexual violence would just be one bad thing that can happen* to people (and if it were weighted towards women, we’d have clearly defined patriarchal systems and sexism that, again, is not there for laughs or shock value) and there would be some actual grasp of psychology and power in the text in general. This is also why people are reducing an attempt at actual mythic storytelling with Mythal to ‘abusive mother’ ‘trauma sad’. These games as texts invite reduction.
That psychology? Utterly lacking for the most part. And not lacking in the way of a story that’s doing something else. Lacking because the text willfully uses shorthand and assumed empathy** from the audience instead of laying bare the actual human motivations*** behind everything. Individual characters rise above this, and all the characters give hints of it, but that’s not the same as actually writing a story that accounts for real human motivations as part of its larger narrative. Characters in truly robust fiction are supportive functions of the larger narrative, and that narrative has clear priorities founded on strong values.****
The damn audience. These games are written for a specific audience. And that audience is really racist and pretty self indulgent. It doesn’t care about motivation. It thinks Varric is an interesting character who isn’t written like a checklist. It’s happy as long as it gets to smash its dolls together. It also likes to send death threats. This audience is an abstracted boogeyman in the writers room as far as I can tell, and it’s stealing all the motivation.
Cannot believe this site has pushed me to actually say this. It’s liberal! These are distinctly liberal games. They cannot and will not say anything truly meaningful because their whole ethos is built on pretending they’re not conservative (an ethos defined by retreat). This is why the subversion of power fantasy in DA is interesting but can ring hollow. It’s incoherent for a reason! It’s not looking its values in the eye. This is also why ME2 remains distinct. Turns out it’s easier for liberals to write villains pretending to be heroes. Take that as you will.
I’m not really interested in talking about how corny Bioware dialogue has always been. It’s always been corny. There’s actual voice direction problems in Veilguard that add a layer of technical problems to this, and that’s a bit more interesting, if frustrating to experience. This is why people are reaching for when they say ‘clunky’. I’m also not really interested in the structural issues. Which are there. Because there’s fewer structural issues in Veilguard than in any previous BioWare game. Most of these complaints are coming from people who have apparently let time soften them on how poorly built the other games are. Again. These are real problems people are flailing at with reductive takes. They’re also on brand for BioWare.
So that whole mess up there? That’s what’s going on. It’s what’s going on with the games and the actual real life audience constantly being at each others throats. It’s what’s going on with expectations and weird takes and the usual clown show.
* You can also go the Alien route of course. But this would require the violence to happen indiscriminately re: gender, and it would need to use the disgust response intelligently to interrogate something like…oh I don’t know the disgusting male power fantasy intrinsic to forced pregnancy-as horror.
** This is part of why people keep saying ‘marvel’. Marvel movies run on assumed empathy and it’s the most immediate touchstone and cheapest shot. BioWare was doing it first though. Guardians is literally riffing on DA and ME. And yes it’s cheap writing. I just don’t know why anyone expects anything else.
*** I’d be fine with mythic or purely dramatic motivations myself, but these games definitely do not know how to do more than gesture at that.
**** Something that’s gotten seriously muddled in our current publishing environment. Character-driven doesn’t mean you can reduce everything to the characters and their arcs. This is how we get shallow self-actualization narratives in place of deep explorations of what it means to be human. This is the problem at the heart of the ‘representation’ debates.

N°2 for the book asks
Thanks for the ask kind anon and sorry for taking forever to answer! (this one was not easy!)
Top 5 books of all time?
In no particular order:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
Set in an interesting historical period (Canada in the 1800s) + partially based on real events + focuses on women's issues + from a female perspective + includes complex, morally grey characters + unreliable narrator trope + criminal (sub)plot + weird historical psychoanalysis & psychiatry + some really great writing. Need I say more?
(Also the show is actually really good as well, if you don't feel like reading the book!)
2. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
I mean, it's a classic for a reason. Gay yearning. Corruption. Murder. Beautiful descriptive prose. But hey, this is Tumblr, so I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here.
(Still need to get my hands on the uncensored version at some point!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy
I've reread this one more times than I can count. Duffy draws on the classics (mostly Greek mythology, but also fairy tale characters and even Faust) but reimagines them through a more contemporary, as well as female perspective. That could go wrong really easily, but this book in fact does a stellar job in my opinion.
Just read Eurydice, my favourite (I don't think I've ever felt quite as represented by a poem before). Or Medusa. Or Pygmalion's Bride.
Or, you know, and poem that is not Mrs. Tiresias - I like to pretend that one is not there.
4. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
Very much my teenage obsession. It's a gripping read written from the point of view of a teenage criminal that speaks in a strange mix of English and Russian that is at first barely coherent. It's raw, it's brutal, but it also asks some very interesting questions about the nature of morality and free will in a way that does not feel forced.
Oh, and the movie's great as well. Possibly the best soundtrack of all time. So good and so problematic that it's been banned in the UK until the 2000s.
5. The Great Cat Massacre (and Other Episodes in French Cultural History) by Robert Darnton
A collection of essays focusing on the microhistory of 18th century France? It's a real mystery why I like it so much, huh.
It's actually a bit insane how much I owe to this book. It arguably helped to spark my Rousseau and Diderot (and, in general, enlightenment era) obsession. I also sneakily reapplied Darnton's argument to justify my thesis (it's totally necessary to study 18th-century mental health approaches, give me all the funds now, please! /s).
Darnton is not only a hilarious author, but you also get a sense that he truly cares about the people he writes about. If you get your hands on it, I recommend reading chapter 4 (includes police description of the key enlightenment figures, like V, Rousseau, and Diderot!) or chapter 6 (the Rousseau stan culture analysis).
Maybe skip the titular chapter, especially if you are fond of cats. I'm afraid the name is, in this case, quite literal.

I went so fast to tag you in the “is this guy punk” post before realising you reblogged it lol. Why are 20 year olds from TikTok obsessed with pretending subcultures are based on politics or fashion when they all literally originate from music, the artists of which can have any political ideals or clothing style. Those things can be a huge part of said subcultures sure but the entire reason they exist in the first place is MUSIC. Acting like punks invented socialism or some shit smh it’s tired
Yeah it's wild to me bc like. Acting like the music part of a music based subculture doesn't matter and then claiming new ahistorical definitions to the terms used to describe them indicates such a fundamental lack of interest or respect for punk and goth and like - if you don't respect it and you're not interested in it then why are you obsessed with redefining it so you can apply it to yourself??? Does not compute. Idk, it's a huge pet peeve.
Also the punk thing in particular drives me nuts bc the #1 thing that tells me you're not actually interested in punk at all is when someone claims there's a coherent political ideology that defines punk. The no true Scotsman shit - "if you're a bigot you're not a punk!" Hate to break it to you, pieces of shit can exist within any subculture. Conservative and racist punks have existed in the movement since forever - I think it's ignorant at best and dangerous at worst to lead people to believe that someone into punk is automatically safe to be around. Jello Biafra didn't die writing "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" for you to pretend the entire community is sweet, soft-hearted anarchist leftists wearing studs and patches while calling their congressmen to support a minimum wage increase that's going before the house next month

Tumblr media
˞ ⚘ synopsis: you’re at the brink, and kazuha comes to comfort you in your time of need.
˞ ⚘ warnings: being done with life, crying, not proofread
˞ ⚘ love, quill: bro this is like the worst fic i’ve ever written please forgive me zee. also this is so so late, i’m really sorry i just lost my motivation for writing it halfway through :( i love you sm and thanks for sending in an ask<3
Tumblr media
when spring finally bloomed, flowers would unfurl from their shy buds, revealing beautiful, bold petals.
but you, kazuha’s flower, were wilting.
archons, you were so tired.
even the most simplistic of actions fatigued you, your chest heaving with the effort of having done anything at all. you couldn’t anymore. what was the point anyway? nobody appreciated what you did and you felt so stupid, so silly for walking around pretending like you belonged when you were really messing everything up. for everyone.
you closed your eyes. the world disappeared and the darkness embraced you. the lack of pain you felt beckoned you, and you felt like you could live in this darkness forever.
and so you would. forever.
and just as the impulsive thought entered your mind, kazuha burst into your shared home, hazphardly carrying takeout, flowers, and the scent of maple leaves in with him.
"dove, forgive me. this son of a hilichurl kept assigning me more work and i know i usually don’t use such mean la—“
“dove?”
you looked up through tear filled eyes, at a blurry kazuha. bags slipped down his arms, with mussed up hair from the harsh wind outside. he dropped the bags at the front and ran to your side, worry coloring his voice.
“hey, are you alright?”
you suppressed the urge to snap at him, did you really look alright? a frown overtook your features, but as you looked at his sincere face, your expressions softened, sobs coming out instead of cruelties.
warm arms encircled you as you babbled nonsense, trying to get your sorrows across to him.
"tell me everything will be okay. please."
one one coherent thought left your mouth, and you were begging for so much more in that one request. tell me everything will be okay. tell me you’ll always be by my side. tell me i’ll get out of here and be happy like i’ve always wanted to.
he looked at you, his own sorrow evident as he gazed at you in this state, tears rubbing in rivets down your cheeks, your voice leaking sorrow.
“i-“
kazuha was always a steady rock, a pillar of strength for not you but all his friends and family. anytime comfort was needed from him he was ready to drop everything just to tell you how loved you are. but today, doubts filled him, yelling in his head so loud he couldn’t think. he did he not notice you were suffering? he did he let it get this far? was he even a good boyfriend? his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth, physically stopping him from saying the one word you needed the most.
you looked up at him, your eyes swimming with tears as your heart sank in your chest, weighed down by his lack of confidence in you.
“you don’t think it will be, do you?”
sobs started leaving your body more rapidly, as you moved away from him, burying your head into your hands. you knew it.
“god it’s never going to be okay. i’m going to be lost lost lost lost lost—“
“no! no dove i’m so sorry. i just.”
he paused, moving closer to you. his hand inched closer to you, settling right next to your thigh and he could feel the warmth from your body, warming him from the inside out.
“i just couldn’t take seeing you like this. i do think you’ll be okay. i promise.”
he paused to think and whispers filled his head, rapidly so. he was the reason you were crying more. maybe you didn’t want him here, and so he spoke his afterthoughts.
“do you need alone time? i can stay, if you want.”
you nodded into your hands as another sob wracked your body.
“i love you.” kazuha’s voice floated near you, and you felt his arms around you, one hand resting at your waist, the other the small of your back.
one small kiss at your temple.
“i’m so proud of you.”
another, on your forehead.
“you will be okay. i know it”
the third, on your cheek.
“and i’ll always be there for you”
and through soft kisses and whispered words, you, kazuha’s flower, drifted off into his arms, with the knowledge that you definitely would, be okay.

Logan wanted to try drawing the Sides (+ himself) as well, so we now have his drawings to grace our presence
Let's get started (it will have our little bonus details, I never would've left you like this!!)
Tumblr media
Our happy pappy Patton!! He heard Logan was gonna draw him so he missed no opportunity putting on Logan's glasses and posing right in front of him. Logan will be drawing everyone with very harsh lines, including Patton. More on his drawing style later though ;). Through his sketches, you can really tell what he deems more important for each side (in this case, it's Patton's smile) as he puts it in the very centre.
Tumblr media
Moving on, we have our Prince Roman! Logan really wanted to accentuate (and place at the very centre) how self absorbed and lost in his imagination Roman is. He drew him kissing his sword because what better way to show the physical manifestation of ego of how unrealistic they are.
Tumblr media
Virgil!! Logan took point about how Virgil draws himself smaller than all other sides (like in my first post about them all) and acted accordingly! I personally really love how they seem to understand each other very well and sympathize with each other's struggles. He drew him happily posing with his birthday cupcake, as he should!
Tumblr media
Our reptillion repscallion is in the house! Can we acknowledge that Logan has Janus related trauma? We still have no idea what happened to him when Janus snatched him away in POF. So I took matters into my own hands and made Logan draw him as a disney villain. He has a sinister smirk, the infamous hook, his cape is flowing in the wind. Our Lord of the Lies is looking in the distance, slits for eyes. I think it there's one dark side that has managed to get under Logan's skin, it's Janus.
Tumblr media
Look at how adorable Remus is!!! Hhhhh I love him and I'm sure Logan does too (you don't have to ship it but I ship it and that's that). He is shown eating his deodorant, a vacant expression as he calmly stares at the distance. Logan can understand that the Duke has no actual impact on him. He can (and will) figuratively undress him with logic. He is just a silly little guy after all.
Tumblr media
Lastly we have Logan. He has a closed book in the centre of his sketch, which I find fascinating. I believe the book itself is a metaphor for all of the knowledge that he possesses, as logic, as the overseer of Thomas' language Centre, as the manager of Thomas' right arm (if I'm not mistaken). But the book is closed. The knowledge isn't only not being used as of this moment but it's closed, it's disregarded. Like Logan is being disregarded. Hence the look of hurt and disgust on his face. There is no use for him if knowledge has no power.
As for the harsh lines all over the place, this explanation will be a little long but I'll do my best to be coherent.
Logan is, as far my understanding of the canon goes, as war with himself. His whole arc consists of him realising his importance in the creative process. His job is not to only keep Thomas at check, but to also urge him to create things that are informative, coherent and hold intelligent value. As of right now, Roman is the only one who's handling the creative process (who's being censored by Patton) so the creative process is stuck in a family friendly, full of criticism and stagnant ideas sort of situation. Unless Thomas (and Roman) realise the importance of Remus and Logan in the process, the product will forever be incomplete.
So, you might have thought that Logan sketching the sides would be full of harsh, symmetrical lines, devoid of any character. But even though his appreciation for perfection can't go unnoticed (as it is a big part of who he is), I can't personally pretend like Logan wouldn't figuratively kill it at creating and drawing and writing and sculpturing and singing and acting and and and and...
Conclusion: Logan is precious and must be protected at all costs (also he should be given a little more power, he knows the sides almost as good as Janus and Patton do)

I used to not care about Sweden ships that much but then my third eye was opened to his shipping potential and I now love every Nordic ship with him.
SuFin - need I say anything? Iconic. Next.
DenSu - Enemies to friends to rivals to friends again to fuck buddies to lovers
SuNor - surprisingly sexy. Ship that's able to simultaneously bring out the best and worst in both of them.
SuIce - why just give him Ice a big brother kink? Give him a daddy kink TOO
All this to ask, any headcanons for SuNor specifically or for Swe ships in general?
Tumblr media
HELLO my dear my beloved my angel of the askbox. i love this journey youve been on, you are completely correct in everything and ur suice take made me scream out loud btw <3 i want my babybabyboy 2 have a daddy kink so bad <3
YES OFC 🫡 SYNTHESIZING MY MINDS VERSION OF MRSWEDEN INTO SM COHERENT FOR YOU POSTHASTE
(edit: this was not very posthaste of me.................... enjoy anyway if u are still out there... i love you...)
hard agree that sunor is So Hot. im obsessed w them as a concept. like. you dont even know
first of all sunor has the norice problem where ppl want to assign them Platonic Sibling energy but then u look at them and its like why is there clearly sexual tension here...... i suspect its norways fault for havign that sexy voice disease where everything he says comes off flirty. and sweden is -- 🧠💥 wait wait wait wait wait
its coming together. sweden spent a lot of his life as a closeted gay man and was very uptight about it (source: look at him), claiming to humans that nations dont do sex and that he is a good asexual boy with no impure thoughts and other times pretending to have interest in women to fit in, depending.
but norway is shamelessly himself in every era—at least in comparison to sve... he wont pretend to be something hes not. and he wouldnt hesitate to fuck a strange man for fun, even in times where getting caught would severely damage his reputation. sweden even in modern day would not do one night stands. or you know. never say never, but hes LEANING never. norway is leaning Always.
what im saying is. sve would be so jealous that nor is living his best life and doesnt feel shame, even in an era(s) where he really should. and i think due to a series of cinematically coincidental outside circumstances (my brain is writing a fanfic without me rn) (edit: i have since forgotten the fanfic), they would start butting heads about it, not in the same way su and den fight... theyre passive aggressively sniping at each other. sve wants him to represent himself better, and nor is like i can literally do what i want forever.
from the outside it looks like a brotherly disagreement over differing life choices, but its 100% sexual tension fueled. nor is like lmao why are you mad? are you jealous? and would come onto him to freak him out and sve would be like STOP this is WRONG but he wants it so bad and they both know it. he hates nor because hes hot and fucking everyone but him and the one thing he can't do is admit he wants him. ...all norway has to do to win is keep teasing him until he breaks, but it would take several years. not decades, bc even if the flirting is infrequent sweden is not strong enough for this treatment.
... in general, i think they have different views of sex. to me norway has a high sex drive, lower than average standards, and doesn't feel shame as acutely as he does and sweden cant stand it. that's my sunor headcanon. they fuck anyway ofc but in modern day sve has made nor get std tested at least once. but could they be exclusively together like a monogamous ship? .............. i could be convinced.
OTHER SU SHIPS, QUICK FIRE ROUND
sufin - need we say more? i want to anyway... i love them married with kids i love them divorced i love them in a 500 year unlabeled situationship i love them one-sided and i dont really prefer one dynamic over another tbh. actually wait i do have a hot take. i think finland deserves to top sometimes. FinSu nation rise up <3
densu - what can i even add to this... they should look like the happiest couple on the surface but be crazy & toxic behind closed doors. theyre perfectly normal guys when separated but when left alone together they scare me. this is a good thing to me btw
suice - jsgdk gjk s klga liwi egi j tjil 2 t. g 8aw9e gae0jo d ;gawj dp2gjawodgijl aij e 0g;eglj aw irgl ajoweg lahrigawi egji awlji dg d i need to write them together more i could get so insane ab these two & i have a scene planned for my longfic where they fuck like crazy and i think ab it once a week. suice is so cute. theyre so cute. AHH

I started following you for cell of empireo purposes so. haruki atou for the character thing? :>
hiii i love haruki atou!! Spoilers for all endings of Cell of Empireo, and I mention a character from interlude!
How I feel about this character:
Oh haruki atou my darling!!! I love this guy. I think everyone comes out of COE with an appreciation for Haruki Atou, and I am not immune! Haruki Atou worldwide! I cosplayed him! I think he’s really well written, and the route differences and the way his will shifts depending on the circumstances are so compelling to me. I think about this all the time but it’s in more than just “in the lower roots, Atou refuses to face the truth and the humanity of those around him, more and more.” It’s also how he chooses to handle things in each ending.
in A root, he places his priority on saving Shinano and in being there for him, but he doesn't confront his own past, and focuses on the current moment instead. That’s why in that ending, nothing is resolved (as seen by the pink hair), but Shinano and Atou are sticking together, with Shinano staying in the Nagoya office.
In B root, he doesn’t have the information to save Shinano (or he’s chosen not to believe in him). He abandons the reason why he went to EHRI/Path to Empireo in the first place. His will is to seek a normal life, and for things to go back to normal. He doesn’t care anymore about the past, or about saving Shinano. And that’s why he ends up with Noa-Nina, in the end. The desperate attempt to pretend that it’s okay, and that they’ve reclaimed that peaceful dream (and he knows it’s a dream, and that he’s running away. He just doesn’t want to confront it).
In C, it’s Nina. The loss of Karen and the others meant he was desperate to save the one person he still has a chance to. So he abandoned himself, in favor of saving her in any way that he can. I still need to replay C and D, so my thoughts are a lot less coherent there ^^; I'll write again once I finish replaying those two roots.
In E? He loses everything. Haruki atou runs and runs away until all he has left to run from is himself. He runs and he fails and he watches everyone die ^_^ he denies the humanity of the path to Empireo/EHRI members and denies any connection to them. Refusing the truth as everything falls apart around him. I love E root and I will talk about it again but it’s soooo <3!!! the circumstances changing his mindset and his will growing weaker and weaker until he just doesn't want to do it anymore!! kill everybody fuck it we ball alpha take the reins!!! AND CALAMITYRUI!!!!
Even in S vs S+! he accepts all aspects of himself, and in doing so, he has the opportunity to save Reiji. He accepts Origin, and he rewrites what Hatsutori had planned. I went on a tangent but I like atou and I like the variations of his will and his decisions in all the endings!! It's a really important facet for me! Haruki Atou worldwide I love that guy
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
HARUKI ATOU HAS TWO HANDS AND TOO MANY LOVE INTERESTS!! My favorite pairing is him and Shinano (atou please give ur doggy a kiss please please plea--) and i've talked about them a lot before! other characters I ship with atou include:
Kanou! Atoukanou sweep I think they’re so fun! I love the banter, the layers of lies and yet they both understand each other. The murder. The Note. 'Kouji Asou' being the only one to understand Kanou, and the only one that he trusts with his will. Kanou’s curse protecting him. The Note. I like those guys a lot <3
Rui! Domestic best friends who are forever comfortable with each other! They understand each other! They trust each other!!
Nina! I think this one is less popular but C root is compelling to me and B root grew on me bc it’s the funniest ending to show other people. The chorus of pain and agony every time I watch B root makes me laugh. I think they could be cute,,
Aiba! This is a background one for me so i don't feel super strongly about it, but I replayed lately and it’s cute?? Aiba lives in every root, so Atou doesn't need to worry about him, and they stay in contact in every root too,,
My Nonromantic OTP for this character:
ISOI FAMILY SWEEP!!! The dynamics between reiji-haruki-sanemitsu are so compelling to me!! It’s complicated and difficult and it’s so fun!!! Layers and layers of unspoken words! Haruki being pissed at snmt and snmt’s reluctance and difficulty to even MEET with haruki, meanwhile haruki and snmt both have one favorite and his name is reiji isoi 🫶 The S root conversation vs the S+ one makes me so crazy,,, I like those guys a lot.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
It’s so awkward answering this bc I’m not sure this fandom is big enough that any of my opinions are “unpopular” more than just “my read of haruki may not line up with these 2 other peoples reads” 😭 and I don’t know Korean or Chinese so I’ve got no idea on the average fandom opinions there… I guess it’s a bit of a cop out answer ^^;
I've certainly had moments where my reads on characters or situations end up drastically different than what i've seen from others, but I don't think I've had such a visceral reaction with Atou opinions? At least, not to the scale where I'd consider any of my opinions 'unpopular'.
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character:
IZU AND HARUKI MEETING IN CELL OF MIRAGE. Fukao Please,, I'd do anything,,

If a person who's basically Lanolin's creator is willing to give her this much near-villainous dialogue, I'd fully expect her to become a villain in the actual comic. I can definitely picture her trying to turn all of Restoration against him just because she personally doesn't understand (and doesn't want to understand) him at all. I know that's (most likely) not the path they have for her but still.
Also dunno how much you know of star wars but she really reminds me of that equally snooty commander lady in return of the jedi.
Yeah, people keep saying maybe Lanolin will turn out to be a villain but like, that's not going to absolve her of her nastiness right now, nor retroactively make her writing more entertaining.
It might contextualize her behavior, but it won't be such a dramatic improvement that it'll elevate the writing to a higher standard of quality. They keep receiving chances to give us A Reason(tm) to explain why she's Like This, and the fact that they miss every single one tells me they're more content with letting fans fill in the blanks themselves.
And... no. I'm not doing their job for them. They're the writers here. They need to quit being lazy and write something coherent for once.
I just need one line of explanation to put everything into context and scrub my hands of her forever, but we don't have that, and it's likely we'll never get it. All we have is "guys be patient with me I'm still learning the ropes uwu," only for her to turn around and continue being a bad leader and an overbearing, overstepping #girlboss. Which is compounded by the fact that nobody particularly wanted or needed her to step up in the first place. Lanolin has a lot more agency than the book lets on, and yet she continues to refrain from sensible decisions in favor of getting mad that people can't read her mind and do what she wants.
We've played this game multiple times before, characterizing the OCs so that they're actually coherent because the alternative is balking at how fucking abysmal the writing is, and it always proves to be a pointless exercise. Reality disappoints so much more than whatever you have in your head. I'm not going to write fanfic for the book if they can't be bothered to develop their characters properly.
Sorry for my terse tone, but the book's stagnant writing frustrates me. I got burned from following Starline too closely, hoping his story would have culminated in some sort of point other than "he didn't think his plan all the way through" (then why hype him up as more meticulous than Eggman for years? Jesus fucking Christ, don't waste my time like that), and look what happened. He got buried under rocks, eulogized with big oof, and everyone who was previously saying Starline was the shit was now laughing at his still-warm corpse because Flynn essentially told them to.
Nuh-uh. Fool me once.
In all likelihood, the book will try to pretend she's not a raging bitch. That she was justified in sneering at the heroes due to a deficiency on Sonic's part. They'll probably pull a "well, Sonic does need someone to rein him in."
And what will happen then is the crowd will murmur agreement, and take it to be a God's-given truth about the character, and spread it around as if it's fact. And then we'll have to slog through "um ackshually, Sonic probably should have somebody slap a leash on him, he's a careless force of nature and a danger to everyone around him" discourse for the next several months. I am not having 'nam flashbacks to three and a half years' worth of people parroting "Eggman never has a solid plan," why do you ask
Because the OCs can never be in the wrong. If there's a problem with OC/canon dynamics, clearly it's the game characters who need fixing. If only Sega would let us flanderize them to make our characters look better by comparison! Alas, mandates. 😔

Alex the Space Ace: Main Blog and Side-Blogs.
Unrepentantly myself:
Main blog: Alex the Space Ace. Has a bunch of "it me" type posts. ATSA: Godless Snarker: because every day some manner of religious bullshit reminds me that being an atheist is something to be proud of. ATSA: Politics: My politics are in flux right now (drifting leftism-ward from liberal), so this side-blog will have a range of opinions. ATSA: Further Left: What it says on the tin. Should have just posted this stuff to politics. White workeness is a journey, not a destination. Me making an effort to do the background reading listen to diverse voices, but again, these reblogs could have just gone to politics. Might consolidate the three later. Alex IRL: Empty for now. I intended this to be for things I write about my life and pictures I took myself instead of reblogs. I do at least intend to post some pictures (none of myself or relatives, but relatively safe stuff like my own art projects or the sandhill crane I saw near the building where I work recently) eventually. ATSA: That Queer Shit: Because I am queer and support other queer people. ATSA: That Kinky Shit: Because I am kinky and support other kinky people. Most of my kink life is what I read and write these days, so this blog is mostly reblogs of kinky or kink-adjacent stuff I wanted to see again. ATSA: Canned Turnip: Things that made me laugh out loud at least the first time (Side-blog title from the old account's Canned Turnip Off Cockslap, which gets its title from this fic (link goes to AO3).
Arts and Crafts:
ATSA: Arts and Crafts general crafts blog. I have too many hobbies already, but I love looking at art projects, even if I never make one. ATSA: Pixel Art: in which I pretend I'll ever cross-stitch anything as complicated as what's reblogged here. ATSA: Yarn and Floss: pretty pictures of things made with yarn, embroidery thread, and occasionally string.
Fandom stuff:
ATSA: Fic Links. Because if I put these in any other fandom blog, they'll get lost in the other reblogs. ATSA: Fandom Dork, for all my past and sort-of fandoms, except for Star Trek (my first and forever fandom) and whatever my current obsessive fandom is. ATSA: Space and Sci-Fi: Space, science, and science-fiction that sometimes overlaps with the fandom and derisann stuff. ATSA: Star Trek Forever: My first and forever fandom. Like, since watching Next Gen as a kindergartener in 1989. ATSA: Star Wars: My current obsessive fandom. I've always been aware of it through cultural osmosis, and got into the prequels for a bit when they were new (they began right before I started high school and ended in my early adulthood), and I got into the Sequels a bit (mostly the fic because fuck everything that happens after Episode VII), and then in May of 2023 I got back into Star Wars in a big way. Cue watching tons of youtube videos and reading tons of meta and fanfic and, oh yeah, the canon and legends material. I'm working on an AU of an AU fic-verse that is kind of all over the place and is spawning multiple timelines, but if someone, somewhere, read any of it and left a comment, I might cry from joy that I'm not just typing into the void. ATSA: Star Wars: Daydream 'Verse: A side-blog I made for the above AU of an AU fic-verse. ATSA: Reaction Gifs: Reaction gifs, gifs from movies and TV, and recently screencaps from movies and TV, because obviously I already have too many side-blogs. ATSA: Reverse Hope Chest: Called such because the original version was as I was leaving my ex and looking for my own place. ATSA: Sidetrackedery: interesting articles. Began as Sidetrackedery on LiveJournal (that started in 2009) and moved to verticalfile on LiveJournal. This is something I'd like to have kept up, but there just aren't enough hours in the day to do the stuff I want to do online AND do all the art projects I want to do when I also have to do stuff like commute and work and sleep and stuff. Stuff I wanted to hold onto but which didn't fit in any of the other side-blogs: ATSA: All the Rest ATSA: Useful: More stuff I wanted to have easy access to. It's a little bit different from reference, but they probably could have been combined. Unsmoted Art: NSFW/18+ type stuff that's managed to survive on Tumblr. ATSA: Best of the Best: when it's a great post and I remember this side-blog exists. ATSA: Derisann: Blog of pretty things. There will be much (but not total)) overlap from the old derisann.
Not Reblogs:
Out of Context Puzzle in a Thunderstorm: Out of context funny quotes (and otherwise quotable bits) from various PIAT podcasts, including D&D Minus, God Awful Movies, Citation Needed, The Scathing Atheist, and The Skepticrat. Not affiliated with PIAT, but I did ask Noah Lugeons when I saw him at FREEFLO 2023, and he said to ask their social media guy, and their social media guy said it was okay, so it's okay. This is another one of those online things that I'd love to keep up with if I had more time/attention span.

I started the original gifblogforsim before it was common for social media sites to make reaction gifs available, and it was bad "netiquette" to hotlink from someone else's space.
Writing:
ATSA: Writing: posts about writing, writing tips, writing encouragement, the occasional infographic, and probably some prompts if I forgot on the day it was queued that the plot bunny pet shop was also a thing. ATSA: Plot Bunny Pet Shop: Story ideas that I like. I will likely not get around to writing any of them myself (I'm struggling enough to post coherent pieces of my current immersive daydream), and I hope that someone else will--and ideally tag me so I can read it. ATSA: Quotes: Because I have so many of them in my likes and they deserved their own space. ATSA: Book Love: Because books are my first love (you'll see a lot of my old account side-blogs like derisann and booksaremyfirstlove
Other:
ATSA: Music and Video, because most of the time when I'm browsing Tumblr I'm already listening to a podcast or half-watching YouTube videos on the other screen. I'll get back to these, no really. ATSA: Health and Fitness: Exactly what it says on the tin. Also a lot of mental health and disability stuff. ATSA: Food and Drink: Recipes. I reblog simple ones that look tasty and don't have ingredients that are too expensive. Now that I have a kitchen again (as of July 2024; for a year and a half before that I lived in a crackerbox of a studio with just a microwave, a toaster, and an electric kettle), I might actually try to make some of these. ATSA: Read Later: Stuff I intend to read, but not right now. Kind of like the thousand or so dead tree books sitting in stacked crates or the thousand or so ebooks on my external hard drive. I've read many, but the rest of the stack is aspirational. ATSA: Reference: Exactly what it says on the tin. Should probably have combined with ATSA: Useful. ATSA: Reverse Hope Chest: Called such because the original version was as I was leaving my ex and looking for my own place. I've been on my own (though occasionally with roommates) since 2014, but I'm always on the lookout for neurodiverse-friendly cleaning and organizing tips and other general adulting-in-the-home type stuff.
