@sistersoftheforce asked: "Oh, yeah that's… huh. That's a lot of blood." (Itzel to Poe)
Hidden Injuries | Accepting
Poe's face pales when he sees the amount of blood covering her and coating the ground under her. "Yes!" He says louder than he means to. He inhales before exhaling shakingly, hands shaking a bit as he tries to calm his nerves. "Yes, it is a lot of blood. Can you stand? We got to get you to the med bay."

trust you | anakin skywalker: episode V
Tumblr media
Summary: You go on a mission with Cal... and Anakin. You have a task as a tech engineer, but dealing with General Grievous and his army of droids can be challenging. Ps: There's a character guest in this chapter, remember it doesn't follow the actual timeline of the franchise!!
No warnings, just vulgar language (a lot of it because it's a mission and they're all on the verge of flipping out lol)
Word count: 4.7k
*
(Y/N):
I'm not sure I even had the option to actually deny the offer Cal made. To be honest, he practically begged me and forced me to agree on going with him and his team to a trade with someone with a weird name.
Worst of it all, I had to be their tech guy for the mission. A mission led by none other than Anakin. I wish I could actually have had a choice, because I sure wasn't expecting to see his face this soon.
Especially after he literally threatened me the other day. I don't think I've ever felt this scared in my life. We all know the guy has a temper and he doesn't follow any rules. As much as we all hoped he would change through the years, it seems like it's getting worse instead.
Now I'm sitting next to Cal in his ship, while Artoo is on top of it. He seemed a little distressed, he doesn't show off his emotions a lot because he knows I get worried. But I know after what happened that day he's not getting along with Anakin.
I mean, who would at this point? He looks at you like he's about to rip your eyes out.
And I know Cal didn't want to look like he's only on this mission because of the team itself. He told me he didn't want to collaborate this time, which only made the Jedi Master walk around with a deadly look on his face.
But the redhead never felt intimidated by him in any way. Or at least he doesn't show it. As far as I know, we're heading to General Grievous' spaceship. I feel like I've heard this name before, but I can't collect it.
"So, what's the plan? Leaving me trapped in here with R2?" I ask as he maneuvers into outer pace, a concentrated look on his face as he does so.
He chuckles with dramatic concern. "You'll be looking out for us with commander Poe Dameron first" Cal explains as I nod. Who is Poe Dameron, by the way?
"He's a Jedi as well?" He shakes his head in response. "He's... not?"
Okay, that concerned me. I'm only used to being around force sensitive people, and being a human already scared me enough. Now, knowing I'm going to be around another human makes me wonder whatever happens if we get attacked.
"Nope, but he's a good Resistance's Starfighter Corps member. And a good pilot" He gives me a smile as he turns his head to face me. He can read my panic plastered all over my face and reaches out his hand to grab mine. "We're gonna need you there to break into their system".
So, we'll watch as the trade unfolds and hope for the best first. Do I agree with that? I didn't, but I had no choice but to help them.
"And if something happens, before he drops you there, he'll bring you back to Coruscant" Cal shoots his head back forward as we approach the starship.
Yeah, simple as that, right? If something happens, like, we'll just go back and live it out. Doesn't seem too tragic for me, I love the adrenaline.
Not.
We landed on a hangar, Cal preparing himself up before leaving me out here with only a Droid and a man named Poe. I hope this guy isn't a douchebag like Skywalker is, I won't be able to run away from him if I wanted to.
He gives me a small kiss on the forehead before leaving the ship, sending me a half smile before meeting the others already in formation. I watch as a brunette man walks towards from where the redhead just left and waves back to the others.
He has wavy dark hair, as well as dark brown eyes, and a stubble. Damn, this man looks fine as hell.
Poe steps in and sits down on the seat next to me, looking right up with a kind smile on his face. He finishes buckling himself before introducing himself to me, while I still glance at him like he just came out of a Disney movie.
"Hi, I'm Dameron. Well, Poe Dameron but they call me by my last name since I'm a commander" He explains, extending his hand for a greeting. I grip his hand for a few seconds before releasing.
Good handshake, firm and gentle. What am I even saying at this point?
"You're (Y/N), right?" I nod as he looks back at the panel, starting the ship.
"Yes, I am. It's nice to meet you" I say for the first time, feeling like I have never met anybody that gorgeous.
"Likewise. So, you're an engineer? You fix everything?" Poe asks, concentrating on lifting the flight.
"Well, mostly prosthetics and spacecraft. They're already too much to handle most of the time. But I can manage computers and systems as well"
"You were responsible for creating the robotic arm General Skywalker has?" He seems interested in what I do for my living and it kinda distracts me from the mission we were on.
I wish I could not hear this name on a daily basis.
"You know him?" I didn't mean to sound too surprised, but my voice gave it away anyway. "And not really, I usually fix it for him".
Yeah, and the last time I did it he almost got killed and that led to me almost getting killed as well.
"We've been out and about on a few assignments. I'm mostly doing tasks for the Resistance, leading attacks and all that" He sets the ship on standby as we watch from a distance while the group of Jedi gets in the Trade Federation Starship.
"Are you never scared of doing these dangerous jobs being human?" I ask out of curiosity, it gives me such a bad feeling being out for work like this.
He looks at me and grins. How can someone be so good looking like that? This is so distracting. "Kinda get used to it at some point, I chose this life".
I just nod and stare back at the distance. We both had comlink for communication, R2 looking out for any threats as well. I shuffle uncomfortably on my seat, desperate to be done with this mission. Poe notices my discomfort and rests a hand over my shoulder.
"You're going to be fine, they'll protect you at all costs and we'll be on full alert from afar. That's why we have other starships in position" He tries to comfort me and gives me a nod.
It doesn't change anything about this assignment, we all know how difficult they can be.
My sweaty hands grab my duffel bag and I look over the tools I brought with me. I hope this shitty idea works, because I can't be bothered to feel bad for failing their job.
A few minutes later, which seemed like hours, Cal spoke over the comlink and Poe promptly shifted the gears and flew back to the starship. As we land, I see him next to another General all while waiting for me. My nerves are on edge and I feel like I'm gonna fucking throw up.
Before I leave, Poe gives me a sympathetic look and offers a handshake. "May the Force be with you" He says kindly.
"May the Force be with you, commander" I force a smile that might have come out as a grimace and follow along with the other guys.
Cal stands next to me as we enter the enormous vessel, full of bodyguards and droids. He ignites his lightsaber and gets closer to my ear.
"We're close to the vents that lead to this small control room. We'll have to get into their system and gather as much information as we can" He whispers, walking me through a small hallway.
He and the other Jedi stop on their tracks and immediately drop both of the droids standing there. Cal turns on his heels and approaches me, handing me a blaster gun. One I was supposed to carry around but am too fucking scared to do it.
"You might wanna use it this time" He reaches out for a pocket knife strapped on his ankle and offers it to me as well. "I didn't say you'll have to. Just for self-defense".
He glances up at me with a tender look on his face. This man gives his life to protect me and I'd do the same if I could. I mean, I do but not the same way he does of course.
I just nod at everything he says and we look up at the vent. I'm not doing this alone, am I?
If I had a dollar for everytime he uses his force for mind reading, I would be such a rich person right now. "I'm going with you" He adds.
Getting in a vent with a duffel bag is probably one of the worst scenarios I never thought about. We were dragging our bodies while he tried to drag the bag without making much noise, but obviously not being very cautious with the tools, the gears and other objects in there. We get to the room, me behind Cal as he shoots his blaster against the soldiers. I can't feel my legs at this point, and it's not even because we're in such a small space.
He drops on his feet first, glancing around the room, before looking up at me. He shoots both arms up, waiting for me to jump in as well. I don't know how I was able to pull a stunt like that since I'm afraid of heights. And I mean 8 feet is already too much for me. Cal grabs my hips and slowly puts me down, a large smile on his face.
"There you go, James Bond!" He mocks, arching his back as I swat him on the chest.
"Shut up, smartass" I can barely speak as I feel my voice falter from the stress and the adrenaline.
He walks over a large control panel, hundreds of different colored buttons and keys. They have pretty much a huge system for such a small room. I mean, if there's a bigger room then this is just a gist. First things first, I had to disable the security camera before someone came bursting into the door. I sit on the big chair and Cal leans against the desk next to me. I'm sure he has no idea what the hell I'm doing. I use a small device to hack into the system and quickly find the program to the security camera.
They clearly need a better safety system, because it's too easy to get into their computer. Either that, or it's a trap. But I'd rather believe they're just that stupid. I turn off the cameras, both of us making sure they're all shut down.
Next, I type in a few things on the keyboard, trying to find what exactly they need. Cal uses his pointer finger to make sure he's looking for the right folder, carefully reading every single word on the screen. "We need strategies folders, every spacecraft and architecture project. List of trades and traders they use".
He said it like he was writing down a fucking grocery shopping list.
I try not to send him a glare or even look at him like I'm pissed. So I just go straight to the point. "Might as well just wipe out the entire computer, Kestis. This might take hours!".
"You can just add them to the device you have?" I swear to God, he can't be that serious.
"You're smart, Cal. Use your head. How big do you think these files are? They're all programs, it's a heavy stack of files" I start to get freaked out with the idea of being there for too long.
"Okay, right I'm sorry if I'm a newbie at technology" He adds dramatically. "Can you just drag the list and the strategies folders then?".
I move the mouse right away, bringing everything to my device, waiting for the system to calculate the estimated time. I can't help but tap my fingernails over the desk while I wait for it. Cal doesn't seem too worried like I am, as though he carries a very serious look on his face.
"We've been in for ten minutes. We probably still have a good half an hour left" He says, still leaning next to me, looking at the watch on his wrist.
"Considering this ship can blow up when we least expect it, I don't think it's good" I look at him like I'm not feeling well. He reaches my right arm and folds his big hand around it, giving it a light squeeze.
"We'll know before it happens, darling" Cal reassures me as his hand goes up and down on my arm in a comforting attempt.
Fifteen fucking minutes. I'm gonna throw myself off the ship. He uses his comlink to let the others know, which they all agree. For the first time, Anakin goes in the line and says he's trying to make a trade. It was all a set up as Cal explained.
The remaining seven minutes turned into a disaster, when a loud blast echoed through one of the hallways outside the room. Then an alarm went off and the lights switched to a dim green light. I just wish they won't turn off any other system before I can transfer everything, otherwise this would be just a waste of time and job. We looked at each other, he was gripping his lightsaber tightly waiting for something to happen, while I held the blaster just for the sake of it. There was another loud burst from a distance, the red head sprinted closer to me.
"Is everyone good?" He asked through the comlink, no one answered. "Damn it" He muttered.
"We need to get out of here before it gets worse!" I try to step in and figure out a way for us to get out. He didn't seem to listen. "Cal!".
"We're closing in on the ship. We noticed a few explosions around" Poe finally chimes in, but not with good news.
Why is it never good?
And then Skywalker called out again, this time shouting words I couldn't understand. I twist my head to the side and look at Cal with desperation.
"It's a code, they're attacking us" He immediately watched as I stood up from the chair. "Hey, look at me! I'm here, you're fine okay?".
Definitely far from being fine. He then proceeded to talk but I'm too busy being stunned to care about it. His voice started to get muffled and I felt like my vision was getting blurry. Is this even the right time to faint or have a panic attack? He shakes both of my arms calling out my name, and I slowly blink a few times before staring back at him.
"For fuck's sake, (Y/N/N). Listen to me" He then places his hands over my face, forcing me to look him in the eyes. "Please, listen. I need to go back there and help them. There's a digital lock on the door, they can't get through if you block it. They'll need to blow it up to get to you".
And you think it's hard for them to do it? That won't be enough.
Again, he furrows his brows and keeps holding my face. "Stop with the overthinking, I can hear it louder. Look, I'll manage it. I'll be back in no time, just wait for the files to finish and you wipe out the rest, fuck it. We don't care!"
I try to agree with the plan, but it was just too hard to keep up with everything. Before he turns on his back to leave the room, Poe speaks up again.
"There's a General lying on the floor, he seems to be injured. It's on Block D" He states before going off again.
This time, me and Cal share the same look. Now he seems more concerned than I do. I follow his gaze up the vent we came from, nudging himself up as he grips the edge literally vanishing. I call out to him, but he doesn't answer.
"Shit!" My hands are shaking so bad, I can't even type without missing the keys. "Shit, shit, shit".
Two minutes. Just give us two minutes and we're out. I hear a lot of grunting up on the room, the floor above me filled with noises and shuffling. The locked door starts pounding and I look straight ahead, fright starting to wash over my body.
"Poe" I have no fucking idea what I'm doing. "Are you there?".
"Definitely here, Miss. How are you holding up?" He asks.
"Do you see any of them? There's someone trying to break in and I don't know what I'm gonna do!" My heart is racing and it feels like I'm going to have a stroke in the middle of the room.
"Just talk to me, alright? How long until it's done?" His voice sounds comforting from the other side until he shouts. "R2! Not that guy, he's friendly!".
I have no idea what's going on outside but I try to shrug it off. "Two minutes! My hands are shaking so bad that I'm not sure I can shoot whoever comes in".
"Okay, not so bad" It takes him another second to keep talking. "I remember I learned a breathing technique, we're doing it together alright?".
I forget he's not next to me and I nod, but I feel like he got that anyway because he started counting and walking me through it. Breathe in and count to 4. Then count to 4 breathing out. Repeat.
"Now, hold your blaster up. Focus on anything as a target and breathe. When you inhale, you count one second and shoot. Don't wait, just shoot. If you miss it, just keep shooting" He explains, wasting his time giving me attention instead.
It makes me feel bad that someone has to do it when he could've been minding his own task. But I'm really appreciative either way. I don't know where the fuck Cal is.
"Don't forget to use anything for hiding and leverage. And please, don't forget to bring back the device" Nice one, Poe. Imagine being in danger like this and not even being able to remember one simple thing.
"Okay, thank you, commander" I breathe through my mouth and grasp the blaster.
Looking over the computer screen, I see that there's only forty seconds left and the door is about to burst open. At the same time, I hear Poe for the last time.
"We're sharing a beer when we land in Coruscant. I wanna learn some technology tricks" I barely have time to laugh as I watch the door sling open.
Okay, breathe. One. Shoot.
Shit.
I miss it by inches. From across the room, I look at Anakin giving me a snide stare as the blast just crossed past his shoulder. I gasp from the outcome and the sudden surprise, but he doesn't give me time to process everything as he shouts at me. His eyes are pure angriness and his shoulders are stiffened.
"Come on, I don't have all the time in the world!" Anakin waits by the door as I quickly set the system to wipe everything out and grab the device before we sprinted out of there.
We rushed with him behind me, there was a mess all over the place and the blaring alarm was deafening. I couldn't even aim while running, my hands were sweating and I was afraid of tripping on my foot. He kept dodging the attacks as well as blocking them from coming at me. This is the most attention I'm going to get from him and it's kinda funny given he hates me.
Anakin pulled a hand over my shoulder to guide me towards the hangar, my eyes shifting to take notice of what was incoming. I tried to at least shoot some of the droids but I was terrible at it.
"Grievous just left the hangar with an escape pod" Cal spoke up after a while and I let out a heavy and long exhale. "Knock down these fucking droids and hurry up!"
I didn't understand the seriousness in his voice, the Jedi Knight behind me still hasn't said a word yet and I have no idea what I'm actually doing at this point. Shooting at them and missing doesn't quite help knocking them down faster and I swear I can hear Anakin just groaning in frustration.
Out of nowhere my arm gets yanked back by a guard droid, pulling me over a room and wrapping its robotic arm around my neck. As if I was panicking already, this time I was pretty sure I was going to collapse. I tried to shove myself off from the tight grip, but it only made me flinch more.
"Drop your weapons, Master Skywalker" It said with their gun stuck to my temple.
I looked at him with such fright, my eyes were desperately crying for help. Anakin frowned, using his flesh hand to hold the lightsaber while the other one he used to pull back using his force.
"Let her go!" He screamed, bloodshot eyes and blue irises staring at the droid holding me. "I said let her fucking go!".
"I'm sorry, Master. We have a mission of our own to do" The droid said before managing to leave me unconscious on the floor.
Anakin:
Fuck. Shit. Motherfucker. Fucking cunt.
I kneel in front of her as she lies unconscious on the floor. She seems to be breathing, but I have no idea what this cocksucker did to her. I didn't expect my mission to be such a disastrous piece of shit. As she's still out, I look back at the droid that's staring at me with a puzzling look on its face.
I know how to read droids' faces and it's a gift from heaven. It's easy to trick them when I want.
"What did you do?" I shout and use my hands to shove it back with the force. I tap her face a few times, she doesn't even flinch. My voice barely comes out as a whisper to avoid the other droids to find me.
How much worse can it get?
I grab her, sliding my arms under her torso and lifting her up in a quick motion. At least she's easy to carry. Through my comlink, Cal starts getting riled up and spitting words like he was worried about something. And then I remember about their friendship.
Fuck me.
I try to ignore all the cursing through my ear, at the same time as I pull (Y/N) up on my shoulder, her body swinging as I run faster. I can't dodge all the attacks at once, but I maneuver myself avoiding getting us both killed. My lightsaber slashes them, knocking them down making it easier to get to the hangar.
"I have her, Kestis! Will you shut the fuck up now?" My voice screeches when I yell at him and my throat hurts.
"Why doesn't she answer her fucking comlink, then? Did you kill her, Skywalker?" His voice started to annoy me, my head was hurting from all the situation. I groan loud enough for him to listen.
"Yeah sure, I killed her and now I'm bringing her body myself because I'm just that smart. She's fucking unconscious, relax!"
And now he's just being even louder and insufferable.
Poe spoke up, his voice emerging like an angel sent from God. "Alright, guys. Let's just settle down, we're not at kindergarten".
I roll my eyes at his statement, rushing towards the hangar. The only ship in good shape was one of theirs, and Cal was standing in front of it. He was pacing around, hands on his hips, his forehead was creased and when he saw us he bolted forward.
"What the fuck happened?" The redhead asked in dread, throwing his arms up.
"We don't have time for bickering right now, Cal. Just help me get her up inside!" I swear my head was going to explode anytime soon. "A droid pulled up some shit on her and she just blacked out".
Could've said it sooner, he would probably understand. He looks at me like he knows something, but I don't bother asking.
"It was probably a spell or something. We need to lay her down" He says sternly as we approach the back of the vehicle and drop her on a cushioned bench.
"This is not what I planned for this goddamn assignment!" I mumble before turning on my back to both of them, heading to the cockpit.
"Well she got the fucking device, you should be glad she could do it and not die either!" He spat back, his hands holding her feet as he props her on the bench.
I just turn away from him making my way to my seat, turning on the gears. Hopefully we'll be back sooner than I expect, I just want to take a long shower and be with Luke for a while.
"We're good to go?" Dameron asks, his voice in a relieved tone as he watches us leave the hangar.
"Yes, commander" I mirror his tone and fly off the starship.
My mind eases as we leave it behind, I feel my hands grip the yoke from the ship tight. We didn't get to do the trade, Grievous noticed our plan way before we could get ahead of them. They attacked us in a matter of seconds, bolting at us with no time to figure out an escaping route.
This one mission is hours away from Coruscant, so it was going to be a pain in the ass to sit this close to Kestis. The moment I realized I had to be next to him it just made me pissed. I don't care about (Y/N) on the back, she tried to help and she barely knows how to blast a gun.
I won't complain about how Cal helped the team out there, as a matter of fact. But I still can't stand seeing his face, considering we just confronted each other the other day. The guy always means good to people, but it doesn't stop me from hating his guts after what he pulled on me during our meetings.
Almost two hours after we left Grievous' ship, we were almost entering the Coruscant atmosphere. That was when she finally woke, a grunt escaping from her lips as she finally took in where she was. Cal helps her lean against the wall, while she places a hand over her head.
"Holy shit" That's her first words after waking up. She can't help but smile at the achievement she made.
I watch as she still keeps the smile on her face, pulling the device between her fingers and raising the object in front of her eyes. It took me seconds to notice I myself had a side smile against my will. The red head leans for a hug, both of them laughing.
I can't help but clear my throat before I regret doing this. "Uh- Good job out there, geek. The team is proud of you" I barely speak and the guy seems to remark that.
"What did you say? We can't hear it!" He says it out loud on purpose, and I feel my hands balling into fists. "Did you just compliment (Y/N/N)?"
"Don't push it, Kestis" My eyes roll to the back of my head, I push myself off the wall. "Good to see you're up".
They stare at my figure quite shocked, their faces almost the same as their mouths hanging open in such a surprise. I'm very aware that's the kind of effect I cause on people when I'm being nice, and I know I'm not really the golden boy of the year either.
But I can't just avoid the fact that, without her, we wouldn't have information about General Grievous and his army. Even though it didn't end how we expected it, that's a win after all.
Before I walk back to the cockpit, I hear her cracked voice speak up. Like she was embarrassed of talking to me. "Thank you for saving me out there".
My head nods before I turn on my heels, it almost feels like I've switched back to the young Anakin. Real smooth, Skywalker.

So, hopefully by now people are off the "Poe Dameron is Cassian and Bix's son" train.
I can understand the excitement or something. It would have been a bittersweet connection to the Sequel Trilogy. But we met Poe's parents (in fact, we met them almost as soon as TFA released) in the mini comic series Shattered Empire, and they've appeared in several books and comics since, and they've mentioned Poe and looked at holograms of him in two different comics. Plus, it has already been established that Poe was born in 2 ABY. Bix's baby was born in 1 BBY.
If they were to retcon this (and I actually wouldn't be surprised. They seem to be retconning Poe's story a lot in the last decade: "He might be force sensitive because of the force tree in his yard-oh wait, never mind, he's not.", "He died-oh, wait, never mind, he survived.", "He's been a Rebel legacy his whole life- oh, wait, never mind, he used to be a spice runner", "He's gay- oh, wait, never mind, he's straight", "here's a love interest for him- oh wait, never mind, she's not interested.", "He was born in 2 ABY to Kes Dameron and Shara Bey and grew up on Yavin 4- oh, wait, never mind, he was actually born in 1 BBY to Cassian Andor and Bix Caleen and grew up on Mina Rau.".), then the only thing that would make sense is that Bix was afraid that the Empire might come after her after learning how Cassian died, so she changed her name to Shara Bey. She met a local kid named Kes Dameron. They fell in love, got married, and somehow "Shara" got into piloting. And it was KES'S dad who Poe was raised by.
SMH....
Anyway, there are several things funny about that theory:
-Back when Rogue One came out, there were fanart and posts about Cassian and Kes being friends and Cassian playing with baby Poe.
-Before the movie came out, people got excited and thought Diego Luna would be cast as Kes Dameron
-Cassian and Bix made a home on Yavin 4... so did Poe's parents after Endor
-People thought Cassian and Jyn were Rey's parents before the movie actually came out (and people also thought Poe and Rey were siblings. I guess Cassian is everybody's father now. XD)
-There's a few fanfics where Poe was intrigued by Cassian's story
-An acquaintance of mine hoped that Adria Arjona would be playing Shara Bey, Poe's mother
-Personally, I had hoped that Shara and Kes would make a small appearance. Cassian would somehow inspire the two to join the Rebellion.
-I imagined Poe telling Rey and Finn how the Rebellion ended up on Yavin 4 (Cassian being stranded there and suggesting that planet to the Rebels)
Well... Cassian, Kes, and Shara never met, but there's a chance their sons could meet. I hope they explain why Cass Jr. didn't join the Resistance, though. Or maybe he did, but he'd technically be a "Remember the new guy?" character.

Poe Dameron x Na’vi!reader [5]
summary: Poe comes across an old friend on Pandora, and learns something new about himself (~2.3k)
content: lots of talking, Poe misses his mom and his friends and is very homesick, he cries a few times, force sensitive Poe (finally!), grief and loss, overuse of italics
a/n: oooookay, strap in. this one is really sad; like, I cried while writing it. Poe is really sad and homesick in this one, and I am so sorry for that. happy May the 4th tho!! (A little early when I’m posting this, but shhhh)
Poe and his companion spent most of the day out, following the trails and learning the sounds of the forest. It was his favorite day yet, staying out in the early sunlight, through the eclipse and into the early evening.
They trailed far from the village, getting caught up in the beauty of the forest, following every track, every sound; Poe never wanted to go back.
Eventually, they go far enough out to come across a very familiar sight.
Black One, parked right where Poe had landed her. Moss has begun to grow on the landing gear, claiming the ship to be part of the land.
There’s a tightness in Poe’s chest, twisting somewhere deep at the sight of his ship—his girl. Homesickness, clawing up his throat and threatening to spill out of his eyes and his mouth.
He wants to wipe his eyes, hide any sign of emotion from the sight of the ship that’s gotten him through so much, but he can’t; the Perspex mask prevents that, keeping his emotions on the forefront.
His Na’vi companion stops when she sees the ship, caution evident in the lowering of her ears and the flick of her tail.
Before she can go on the defensive, Poe puts a hand on her forearm, reaching up to stop her before things can escalate to an unnecessary level.
”No, it’s—it’s mine,” he clarifies, barely keeping his voice steady with the simple words.
He misses his friends back home. He misses the General. He misses BB-8.
She softens when he speaks, the defensive grip on the handle of her blade loosening when she confirms that this ship has been here for a while, without any sign of other Skypeople.
“It’s, uh—“ Poe starts, struggling to find the right words while also maintaining his composure.
“It’s how I ended up here.”
His companion doesn’t speak—she’s able to read the emotion on his face, his difficulty with acknowledging this; it’s only fair that she listens to him.
Poe steps towards Black One, approaching her slowly, carefully.
When he’s close enough, he rests a hand on the steel body, remembering the countless times he’s been on this ship, piloting her around like it was the only thing he knew how to do.
He hasn’t even been gone that long, but it all feels so distant now.
He presses a switch, and the transparisteel canopy opens up for him, just as she always did.
Getting leverage in the foothold, Poe hoists himself up, but doesn’t seat himself fully into the cockpit; instead, he opts to sit at the edge of the ship, where the canopy seals when it’s closed.
The ship is untouched inside, all his controls exactly as he’d left them.
He’d hung the chain with his mother’s ring in the ship, wanting to keep it for a good luck charm, knowing how far this mission would take him.
The sight of the brushed steel ring makes his heart twist in his chest, and he can feel the fresh wetness in his eyes when he blinks.
Poe reaches into the cockpit, taking the chain in his hands, running his thumb along the smooth metal of the ring. His companion watches, concern in her eyes.
“This was, uh—“ he starts, laughing dryly, even though there’s nothing funny.
“—my mother’s.”
From his position, Poe’s now eye-level with the Na’vi, and he can see the way her gaze softens at the sight of him, her expression one of sympathy and conflict.
This is a human, the species that’s caused so much pain and destruction to her people, but he’s so…vulnerable. Honest.
He’s expressing his grief to her, the homesickness he feels, and she doesn’t know what to say.
She rests a hand on his thigh, the touch light and comforting. At the feeling of it, Poe shuts his eyes, a couple of disobedient tears dropping and leaving little marks on the inside of his mask.
Poe secures the chain around his neck once more, before letting his hand rest atop hers; his entire hand is about the size of her palm.
Poe is in an interesting position; he doesn’t know the hurt that humans have caused the Na’vi, but his companion does. She can see that he’s different, that he’s a lost soul—his heart is strong, and he’s smart, but he’s lost. So far removed from his home that there’s nothing left for him to do but grieve, and start from the beginning.
A few beats pass, and the tears have begun to subside. Poe pulls away, reluctantly.
He turns to face the cockpit of his ship. The comms won’t reach out here, he knows that already, he just..
He has to try.
His hands move over the controls effortlessly, the muscle memory doing the heavy lifting for him, and he flips the necessary switches to send out a communication to the Resistance base back home.
Poe clears his throat, the static of the comms channel an uncomfortable, unyielding noise.
“This is Commander Dameron. I am sending this message out to any members of the Resistance who are near enough to receive it. I am currently stranded on an unknown moon, far beyond the furthest reaches of our own galaxy.”
His voice wavers at the last sentence, when he says it out loud, it strikes deep in his core.
“I will remain stationed on this moon for an indeterminate amount of time. Please, if you receive this, send a signal so I know you’re there.”
The speaker of his communications device clicks and buzzes from being so far out of range, and there isn’t even the suggestion of any incoming messages.
Poe clicks everything off, the mechanics of Black One settling into silence once more.
He turns, shifting to face his companion once more. Her gaze continues to shift between the interior of his ship and Poe himself.
Poe knows that he’s too far out. He knows that no one’s coming to get him.
Even with that crushing revelation, he doesn’t feel as alone as he thought he would. He’s got someone here, someone that’s welcomed him into her life, and is teaching him the ways of her people when she absolutely didn’t need to.
“I’m sorry, I just—“ he starts, struggling to find the right words.
“I thought that this would make me feel better,” he laughs again, fingers toying idly with the air flow tube that connects to his mask.
The sun has begun to set, the now-familiar bioluminescence of the forest making its presence known once again.
There’s something that Poe’s never noticed before.
An…animal? No, insect? No. Something else.
Pure white, floating through the air like a leaf on the water. It looks like nothing Poe’s ever seen before, drifting through the air, and he’s intrigued.
His companion takes notice immediately, her attention focused on the thing that has drifted between them; it carries an energy, settling the nerves that had flooded Poe’s veins.
The Na’vi takes Poe’s hand, carefully, turning it so his palm faces upwards, and the floating…thing takes a rest in his hand.
It’s feather-light, and there’s something peaceful about its presence.
“Atokirina,” she murmurs, voice soft and reverent.
When Poe gives her a slightly confused look, she clarifies.
“Seeds of the sacred tree, very pure spirits.”
Okay, there’s definitely something else going on here, and it gives Poe the same feeling he’d get when anyone back home would discuss the Force.
The seed rests in his palm, giving off the softest glow, before it heads off again, drifting back into the sky and deeper into the woods.
Poe lets his hand fall, resting both of them back in his lap. Something’s shifted in the air, the energy is different.
The Na’vi considers what’s just happened, debating whether or not she wants to afford Poe the same vulnerability that he’s just shown her.
She needs to. Decision made.
There’s no hesitation when she puts her hands on Poe’s waist, lifting him off of Black One with ease and setting him back down onto solid ground.
Poe doesn’t falter, doesn’t even pause when she maneuvers him so effortlessly; he enjoyed it much more than he probably should’ve.
“Come. I’ll show you,” she tells him, leading the way once more, heading away from the clearing and back into the woods.
Poe has just enough time to shut the transparisteel canopy of his X-Wing before he heads off after her, unsure of where she’s leading him.
Thankfully, the journey doesn’t take very long, and Poe knows right away when they’ve arrived.
He sees it in the distance, a cluster of trees that shine so beautifully, vines hanging low from the branches, glowing and teeming with life as he and his companion step beneath the thick foliage.
On closer inspection, they’re not so much vines, as they are the proper leaves of the tree, nearly reaching the ground, shining a brilliant pink hue.
They glow brighter than any other plant he’s seen in his time here. This is much different.
As they walk deeper into this group of trees, Poe extends a hand out to his side, allowing the many tendrils of this tree to brush across his arm as they pass.
This place carries the same energy that the seed had, something that resonates deep in Poe’s core.
His companion slows, then stops, turning to Poe and watching as he takes in his surroundings.
“This is Utral Aymokriyä. The Tree of Voices,” she tells him, taking a few of the long, glowing vines of the tree in hand.
“It is how we communicate with our ancestors, our loved ones who have returned to Eywa.”
There it is again. Eywa. That word sticks out in Poe’s mind, and it’s something that he just can’t place.
“I’m sorry, I—who- what’s Eywa?” He asks, trying his hardest to sound as respectful as possible.
It seems to have worked, because she doesn’t come across as offended at his question. She takes a few moments, considering her answer and the man who’s asked it.
“Eywa is everything. She is the air and the soul, the beat of our hearts and the strength of the clans. She protects the balance of life.”
Poe listens, enamored. His brain makes the immediate connection between Eywa and what he understands as the Force, and he can’t stop himself from making the comparison known.
“It’s like the Force,” he agrees, the thought that a place so distant could have such a similar energy absolutely flooring him.
His companion is intrigued, and she watches him, waiting for him to continue.
“It’s, uh—“ Poe stammers, trying to condense the magnitude of the Force into something easily explainable.
“It’s everything, like- surrounds everyone, good and bad. It’s this…energy. Some people are more…sensitive to it than others.”
He feels like he’s totally failing at this, but when he looks up at his companion, she seems to understand completely, and that puts him at ease.
“Are you…sensitive to it?” She asks, curiosity piqued.
Poe doesn’t have an answer to that. He doesn’t know, honestly. He’s always felt…something, but he always just assumed that was just a normal part of life.
He shrugs, suddenly feeling small and averting his gaze.
“I don’t know, honestly, I—it’s not something you just know right away.”
She listens, showing no judgement or discrimination towards his uncertainty; she just…listens.
Silence falls between them once more, and Poe can feel his companion’s eyes on him.
She can’t take her eyes off of him, and she can feel the energy surrounding him—the sign from Eywa. There was a reason he came here, why he was able to bond with the pa’li without making tsaheylu.
She waves her hand softly, carefully inviting him closer. She takes a few long vines of the tree in her hand, making tsaheylu with the glowing plant.
She can hear the voices of her ancestors, her loved ones that all live on in Eywa.
She reaches out, taking Poe’s small hand in her large one, before placing it atop where she’s made the connection to the tree.
Poe’s fingers flex, wrapping carefully around not just her queue but the pink-hued vines as well.
“Feel,” she urges softly, her ears twitching as she looks down at Poe, watching to see if something—anythinghappens.
Poe takes a deep breath, shuts his eyes. He focuses hard, reaching out in his mind for anything that calls to him.
He hears a voice. No, he hears several voices. Cheering and laughing, singing songs that he knows have been passed down for generations.
He feels love and loss, like the voices are more than just that—voices; they’re alive, living on even after they’ve left this world.
Poe’s heart pounds in his chest, his hand trembling slightly where it rests. The emotion is so much, flooding through him at the feeling of so many lives, continuing on even after death.
He pulls away, eyes wet with fresh tears as the voices go quiet in his mind.
His companion watches, concern evident on her face, hiding something one can only describe as reverence.
She reaches a hand down, resting a large palm on the side of Poe’s face; he leans into the touch, silently cursing the mask that blocks so much of her affection.
“She spoke to you, tsamsiyu,” his companion murmurs, her tone low.
“Wha—who did?” Poe asks, blinking away the remainder of his unshed tears.
“Eywa.”
As always, thank you for reading!

Way to Remember Someone You Close to
Tumblr media
Requested by @thebadbatch2022 . I hope you like this one because I've been struggling to involve all three of them on this fic, I did my best.
Tumblr media
Poe just finished his new duty as new general along with Finn. He was exhausted to deal with larger problems they had to deal with.
He couldn't image how Leia could deal with all of this while dealing with her son. "Wish you were here, Leia."
Suddenly he noticed a west-com beeped in gold light which he never seen or have that before. He took it and wear around his wrist and actived it.
A hologram of Leia showed up in front of him "General ?"
General Organa didn't say anything, she only held her hand to him. Poe just hold her hand then a gold bright was somehow explosed really fast...
Tumblr media
Poe's eyes were flashed by it, definitely too bright to open his eyes for a second. He then opened his eyes and looked around in a shock.
"What just happened ? Where am I ?" He definitely wasn't in his own room.
"General ? General ?!" He definitely was lost.
Everything he saw was white like he had no idea where he was. As he walked around, he saw a young lady who has dark black and purple painting of a lady, she looked familiar, he thought.
He decided to ask the lady "Excuse me, ma'am."
The lady stared at him "Don't call me that, I'm not even 20 yet."
"Sorry. I just wanna say your painting looks amazing. If you don't mind, who is she ?"
She smiled "Thank you and I present you Princess Leia Organa !"
General Organa ? It couldn't be true. "You mean General Organa ? This is not General Organa that I remember." "General, uh ? She must been promoted." She was surprised.
He nodded "She was. She was the one had been keeping me and the resistance alive."
"Resistance ? You mean the rebellion ?" Sabine asked.
Rebellion ? Man, was she from.... "Wait, please tell me I'm not only one thinking crazy about...this ?" "Now we're talking, I never seen you before. Guess you must been from the future, right ?"
He nodded "I am ! Let's just say I'm one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy."
She shook her head "I doubt that. The greatest pilot in the galaxy is definitely General Hera Syndulla."
Hera Syndulla, Poe definitely heard that from his parents in the past. He admitted she was incredible pilot leader "You're not wrong about that. She has been over the news for years."
She smirked, knowing she was right "I'm Sabine anyway. What's yours ?"
"General Poe Dameron. You can call me Poe."
"General Dameron. Impressive, she must been proud of you."
"I wish I could heard that way but....she's gone." He expressed his grief.
Sabine was shocked hearing that news "So sorry to hear that. I bet she had been an incredible woman and a strong leader as well."
Poe sighed "Yes, she was."
"I know it's always hard to deal with grief, I have too." Poe payed attention at her "He was a great Jedi and a great leader too. He even trained me to be a better fighter even through I'm not force sensitive and now, he's gone."
"I'm very sorry for your loss." He said.
Sabine nodded at him then saying "Sometimes we wish if we had any chance before the time's up but it's inpredictable. And...this is not my first time being flashed." He was shocked that she was used to be taken nowhere.
"My first time being nowhere was being targeted by a clone sniper." She told her first experience.
"A clone sniper ?" He was surprised.
She nodded "Yeah, but he missed the targets so many times because his hands were too shaking to hold. I could tell something was on his mind, something he never had a chance to take...."
She took a deep breath and said "He lost his brother, he even never had a chance to say goodbye because.... He was prisoned by the Empire."
Poe was so shocked to hear that "He may been tough and grumpy but he also grieving and that was where we made a deal, I helped him to be a better sniper so long as he doesn't kill me. That's how we became friends, I guess."
"I guess all we can do is keep moving, right ?"
"Yeah, and be thankful to someone who we close to." She added.
Suddenly their gold west-coms were beeped "Looks like our time's up. It was nice to see you, Poe." She held her hand to shake hands. He smiled as accepting "You too, Sabine. Good luck for everything."
When they were shaking hands, the gold bright was explosed again around them.
Tumblr media
Poe was still shocked that he was back in his room somehow as he heard a door knock "Hey Poe, I know you needed some time alone but we have a situation right now."
"I'm on it, General ." Poe responded. "Oh, Where did you get that poster, man ? It looks so cool."
Poe raised his eyebrows as saw a painting of young Leia was on the wall "An old friend gave it to me as a gift."
Finn nodded as left his room as Poe stared at his gold west-com that he wearing. "I would make you proud, General." then he left.

Star Wars Pilots Tournament - Round 4
Who's the better pilot?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Poe Dameron:
I love him so much
not only does he rapidly familiarize himself with a ship he has no prior experience flying (the TIE fighter in TFA) he is able to fly it well, until they get distracted squabbling and one of the missiles land (and when he does crash, he keeps them both alive which is especially impressive considering the design of a TIE). Furthermore, he's not just considered the best pilot in the Resistance in the movies, in the comics he is referred to as the best pilot in the galaxy — and considering how gracefully he flies (which we see during his 1 on 1 with the dreadnought in tlj), its no surprise hes considered that! He literally flies like/better than most Jedi I've ever seen and he isn't even the least bit force sensitive!! And altho he has a little trouble with the falcon, he's able to successfully navigate the lightspeed skipping and do the calculations himself while avoiding crashing at any of the new locations, and keeping the ties off them at the same time that he's trying to fill Finn in on what he's doing. Extra bonus propaganda: he was canonically trained by Wedge Antilles, and lightspeed skipped for the first time when he was just 16 years old. It's also heavily implied that he graduated the flight academy early by a year in various canonical timelines cited, and he very quickly rose through the ranks in the New Republic Defense Fleet, becoming a Commander of his own squadron, and holding that rank when he joined the resistance and was instantly put in charge of his own flight wing.
Han Solo:
I mean he did the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, I mean it’s Han Solo how much propaganda does an iconic character like Han Solo need

Character Introduction:
Amaiya Solace
A resistance pilot known for her impeccable accuracy both aboard her ship and with a blaster and for her quick reaction time. Having been naturally gifted with these talents, the rumor mill has turned up talks about her being “force sensitive” but she denies any rumor that comes her way. Long time friends (and maybe more) with Poe Dameron. She is his right hand person, assisting him in leading the star fighter squadrons. Amaiya is a kind-hearted but fiercely protective person who won’t hesitate to defend her loved ones at a moments notice.

Summary
The Sequel Trilogy reimagined with smuggler Ben Solo reluctant to take on the family mantle of Jedi in the fight against the mysterious Kira Ren and the diabolical First Order...
Chapter Summary
Poe Dameron is brought aboard the First Order Star Destroyer Finalizer, where he is interrogated about the map to Luke Skywalker's whereabouts by the enigmatic Kira Ren. Meanwhile, a remorseful stormtrooper named FN-2187 yearns to leave behind the villainous organization...
EXCERPT
Poe Dameron woke up with a start, and with a pounding headache. Actually, it was hard to pinpoint what part of him didn't ache. Those stormtroopers really did a number on him. He was in a dimly lit room. He tried to move to explore his cell, but found that he couldn't. He looked down. A glint of durasteel indicated that he was bound to some sort of restraining slab. "I had no idea we had the best pilot in the Resistance on board," a now horribly familiar feminine voice whispered from the shadows. Poe flinched. Like a ghost, Kira Ren materialized out of the darkness, a faux friendly smile etched on her face as she regarded him. "Comfortable?" Poe replied through battered lips. "Not really." The false smile remained on the girl's face. "I'm impressed. No one has been able to get out of you what you did with the map." Despite himself, Poe grinned and winked at her. "Might wanna rethink your technique." The flirtation and double entendre in his voice was obvious. Kira had been around enough lecherous men and women to pick up on it. "You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Kira purred, her friendly smile twisting into something more sinister. She pressed herself against him and ran her hand up the inner thigh of his pants. Poe dared himself to breath. Kira's face was close...too close...her lips parted, eyes closed... "URK!" Poe grimaced as her hand closed over his testicles in a vice-like grip. The one area the troopers thankfully didn't abuse, and now his captor was threatening to rip them off. "Where is it?!" Kira snarled, squeezing even harder on his most sensitive of areas. "TELL ME!" "T-the R-R-Resistance will.. n-not be intimidated... b-buh-by you!" gasped Poe, eyes watering in agony as Kira squeezed, twisted, and pulled down on his genitals. Kira released her crushing grip on him and stepped back, saying nothing. She then reached out for his face, though not touching him, and Poe's head slammed into the headrest of the restraining slab. "Where. Is. It?" Kira repeated. Poe couldn't endure the psychic invasion that came next. It was like his brain was being ripped apart, every thought, memory, and emotion laid bare and cast aside as Kira rifled through his thoughts. Not only that, but Kira was activating the pain receptors of his brain on purpose. The torture was meant to be as physical as it was mental.  "AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!" Poe's screams reverberated throughout the corridors of the Star Destroyer, and those that walked by the interrogation cell picked up their pace for fear of joining the prisoner.

Hear me out-
A Guardians of the Galaxy AU where they exist in the Star Wars universe
Rocket is a pilot/mechanic who is the definition of sass and is always mouthing off to Poe Dameron and trying to prove that he's better than others
Peter is the go-with-the-flow pilot who is cocky sometimes, but not nearly as much as Rocket and he can be reckless at times
Gamora and Nebula as spies working for the Resistance who used to be with the First Order
Mantis working with the healers to help people feel better with her powers
Drax is one of the fighters who takes charge of the guns on bigger ships, but is also considered the muscle
Groot is a Force sensitive being who is learning to channel that power to help the Resistance
I'm not a huge Star Wars person, but like- this idea is stuck in my head-

For my SW fic rn:
Nina - Jedi (During Order 66)
Kaz - Pilot (Ex-Street Rat (Dregs))
Jesper - Force Sensitive (Ex-Smuggler)
Matthias - Ex Imperial (Special Forces)
Inej - Mandalorian (Clan Ghafa)
Wylan - Ex-Mechanic (Trader's son)
Ooh, I'd never thought of Nina as a Jedi! That'd be a good conflict with her character, I like that
Pilot Kaz >>>>>
You know when you hear something and you never knew how badly you needed it until you heard it? Pilot Kaz. Wait, are we talking pilot like Poe Dameron orrrrrrrr?
MECHANIC WYLAN, WE HAVE THE SAME BRAINCELL ON THAT! AND EX-IMPERIAL MATTHIAS!!!
Bestie, I might just have to write a star wars fic. I'll squeeze it in between my possessed Jes fic and my newsies au, maybe
Yknow in Solo, how Han got the Millennium Falcon by gambling for it? Imagine if that's how Jesper met Kaz and/or Wylan. He gambled them for their ship (the outcome depends on the trajectory of the fic, ig)
How deep into Mandolorian, like, religion is Inej? Does she remove her helmet?

polo i hate it!
Ahhhh thank you tbh I was afraid someone would ask about this one lmao
From this list of WIPS
So the title is because the ship name for Poe Dameron and Ben Solo is Polo and that's... absolutely miserable. Some have adopted "dark pilot" which is better but still bleh IMO.
Anyway this is a Star Wars AU that came about because I heard The Rise of Skywalker claim Poe Dameron used to be a spice smuggler and I was like you did not make your one (1) Latino lead a drug dealer, and then just claim it's to make him like Han Solo when he's CLEARLY the Leia of the crew
So I wrote a different backstory for Poe where he is ALSO force sensitive and actually trained under Luke with Ben before he left Jedi training to join the resistance and I was rewriting the trilogy's events through that lens. I do genuinely like the series I just got stuck on the Finn/Rose story but I keep picking away at it. Someday I will finish the rewrite of The Last Jedi, but here's my fave snippet from it:
“What do you know about the Force?” Luke asked, leading them through the temple and out the other side to a cliff that looked out over the water.
“It’s a power the Jedi have,” said Rey. She looked to Poe for help, but he shrugged his shoulders. “It…” Rey hesitated. “It lets them control people and… make things float.”
Poe grinned, despite his trepidation at returning to training. He liked Rey’s definition.
“Impressive,” Luke said. “Every word in that sentence was wrong.” He gestured to a raised slab of stone. “Sit here, legs crossed. Poe, would you like to offer a better definition?”
“No, Master Skywalker,” Poe said. “I thought Rey did great. I guess she forgot about the part where it makes you jump really high.”

Poe had been sitting by himself away from everyone, hidden under his X-Wing. He rubs his eyes with the palms of his hands as another sob rocks through him. He drops his head to rest in his arms which were folded on top of his bent legs. He lifts his head a bit when he hears someone walking closer.
He scoots further under his X-Wing so no one can see him, but stops when Rey's face appears under the ship. His eyes are red and puffy as his tears slowly slip down his face. He watches as she crawls under the ship and sit in front of him. He goes to wave her away but stops as she reaches up and begins to wipe away his tears.

...Just rediscovered this WIP in my files, and I don't foresee it getting fleshed out anytime soon, but I do love the ridiculous scenes I've got, so I might as well release them into the wild. 😉
A Tree Grew on Yavin
Summary: Poe's friends in the Resistance are baffled/skeptical when he describes the animate "Force tree" he grew up with on Yavin IV, but they soon get to see for themselves when Groot, his partner Rocket, and their team of "morons" make contact.
“You know, Poe,” said Rey, as they rehashed the attack run, “that almost sounds like the Force.”
“Wait, is that how the Force works?” said Finn. “Because I've gotten some conflicting reports on that.”
“Nah. I don't have the Force, Rey. I grew up with this tree… It's kind of complicated to explain. But if I had it, I think I'd know.”
“Of course you have the Force, Poe.” Leia entered from the hall. “We all do. It's life's music. The song we make.”
Poe didn't argue, but he shrugged. Fine. Terminology. He wasn't Force-sensitive.
It wasn't until days later, during a lull from the work of settling the remnants of the Resistance in on Ajan Kloss, that the subject came up again.
“We want to know more about that tree,” said Rey, apropos of nothing.
Poe stared blankly at her, and then at the jungle surrounding their new base.
“Which one? And why would I know any more about it than you do? I've never been to Ajan Kloss before, either.”
“Not these trees,” said Finn. “On the Falcon, you said you grew up with a tree, and that's why you're confident you're not Force-sensitive. Why? Rey's been studying the Jedi texts and we asked around a bit, but no one has ever heard of tests for Force-sensitivity involving trees.”
Poe raised an eyebrow. “You've been—who would you even ask about that? Besides the General, of course. She would have been able to tell you.” He frowned. “You also could have just asked me to begin with, you know.”
Rey and Finn eyed him with identical expressions of skepticism.
“You mean, in the cumulative 5 spare seconds since we got here that you haven't been busy setting up landing fields—”
“Building hangars.”
“Organizing patrols.”
“Flying patrols.”
“Eating.”
“Or sleeping?”
“...OK, fair. It's been a little hectic.”
Rey smirked in victory. “So, the tree?”
Poe sighed and settled in for a story. “I warned you it's complicated to explain.”
Both listeners nodded.
“All right, then. So my mother, Shara Bey, flew for the Rebellion—both my parents fought in the Rebellion, but Mom was the pilot.”
A mixed group of mechanics and pilots passing by their table chuckled affectionately. “Everyone knows, Dameron!”
“Er, I didn't, actually,” said Rey.
“Yeah, same,” said Finn.
“Thank you!” He mock-glared at the passing group. “You may think you know all of my stories, especially after hanging around with L'ulo too much, but this context is actually relevant.”
“Someone has to heckle you with the rest of Black Squadron still out on mission!” teased a tech.
“Your mother was a Rebellion pilot, and?” prompted Rey.
“And right at the end of the war, after the second Death Star blew up, when the dregs of the Empire were still coming down, she got pulled onto an undercover mission that Luke Skywalker was running. He needed to get something out of an Imperial research lab. Apparently, the Jedi temple in the Old Republic was built around this massive Force-sensitive tree. The Empire destroyed it, but they kept a few live pieces. For research, I guess.”
Rey's forehead wrinkled thoughtfully. “The Jedi texts on Ahch-To were in a tree. I wonder if it was the same type.”
Poe blinked. “Uhhh… maybe? …You couldn't put books in our Force Tree, but I don't know. Can't rule it out, really.”
Rey shook her head. “Sorry! I'm side-tracking your story. Go on.”
Poe smiled. “So when they got there and tricked their way into the lab, they found these two little Force trees. Skywalker was only expecting to there to be one. At the time, my parents were just about to muster out and go settle down somewhere, so Skywalker gave them second one to take with them and plant. He said he wanted it to be safe somewhere.
“Point is, according to Skywalker, that tree just radiates Force energy and is obviously not an ordinary tree. So it seems highly unlikely that I would never have sensed that growing up if I were Force-sensitive.”
Finn looked vaguely let down. “So… it's this amazingly cool thing, but without the Force—or, without being sensitive to the Force—it's just like a regular tree?” He frowned. “You don't think Skywalker was just pulling your mother's leg, do you? Rey said he's kinda sarcastic…”
“Well, not just like a regular tree. I mean, regular trees don't walk around. Or talk.”
“What?!”
“I said, regular trees don't—”
Finn waved for him to stop. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Got that. Completely true. You're saying this Force tree does walk and talk? Like a person?”
“Yeah. His name's Groot.” He glanced around at the jungle again, with more satisfaction this time. “He would like it here.”
...
“Commander Dameron! Commander Dameron!”
Poe stifled a groan and rose from his crouch under the X-wing he was working on. “Yes, Threepio?”
“We have just received a communication for you, sir!”
Poe frowned as he ran through the mental list of who might be calling him. Black Squadron was all here. Finn and Rey were here (in fact, Rey was heading towards them now, apparently on her way back from another obstacle course run). If it were his father, C3PO would have led with that. Any of his old navy contacts who hadn't died on Hosnian Prime had mostly found their way to the Resistance by now…
“OK, who is it?”
“He called himself 'Rocket,' sir. He refused to be any more specific and insisted you would know who he was. If fact, he was quite—”
“Rude?” said Poe.
“Indeed!”
“Yeah, I know who he is. Thanks, Threepio. It's not personal. He's rude to everyone.”
Poe replaced the open panel and grabbed his jacket.
“Wait…” He stopped in his tracks. “What codes did he use to call us?”
“I believe it is one of the communication codes we use with our suppliers, sir! I was intending to ask you with whom you had shared it.”
Poe shook his head and sighed. “He didn't get it from me, pal. But Rocket turns up all kinds of things he's not supposed to have. Might be time to start cycling in some new codes.”
He fell into step beside Rey as they both headed for the base's central complex. “Done already?” she asked curiously. “I figured that sort of repair would take all afternoon.”
“It will, but apparently not today. Threepio said a communication came through for me.”
The curious stares started as soon as they stepped through the door. Rey wasn't that much of a curiosity anymore, and Poe certainly wasn't, which meant Rocket must be in fine form today. Rey gave him a sidelong glance—she'd clearly noticed, too.
“Poe!” Finn waved from the command room and jogged towards them, flashing Rey a quick smile before getting back to the business at hand. “There's someone on the line for you, named—”
“Rocket. Yeah, Threepio told me. That's why I'm up here.” He continued his brisk stride towards the command room, running a hand restlessly through his hair. “Who did he insult besides Threepio?”
“What?”
“What did Rocket say? Threepio was in a huff; everyone's giving me weird looks, and I know Rocket—civility is not his strong suit.”
Finn hesitated. “I'm not sure he insulted anyone exactly. He's just… kind of… glowering at everyone.”
Finn wasn't wrong about the glowering. The holo showed Rocket's diminutive arms folded belligerently over his chest, his pointed face twisted into a familiar sullen scowl, and the tip of his bushy, ringed tail swishing impatiently over the ground.
Of course, most of that was just Rocket's default appearance. The gigantic blaster over his shoulder, almost as large as his entire body, was new since Poe had last seen him, however.
“Rocket! Good to see you! You still working with Groot?”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Finn and Rey straighten sharply, suddenly laser-focused on the conversation.
Behind Rocket, a much taller being leaned into the shot. The long wooden face split into a broad smile as he boomed out a cheerful “I am Groot!”
Force, it was good to see him again. Poe grinned up at the hologram that now towered over him to capture both of the beings on the other end.
“Beep! Bee-weeoooo!” BB-8 piped up cheerfully from by Poe's feet.
“I am Groot,” agreed Groot.
“Yeah, yeah,” groused Rocket. “Everyone's happy to see everyone. Great. Now that we've established that, can we get back to business?”
“What are you calling about? And how did you get this access code?”
Rocket loftily waved off the latter question. “Oh, you know. Sometimes you just stumble across these sorts of things.”
“Actually, no, I think there are quite a few people working to make sure you don't just 'stumble across' that code.”
“Well, maybe not just lying around, but once you're already in the right computer system…”
Poe sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Threepio wasn't going to be thrilled, but knowing Rocket, he could guess the rest. Apparently at least one of the Resistance's suppliers wasn't Raccoon-proofed. Probably not a huge security risk—just Rocket being dangerously skilled and a compulsive thief, as usual.
“OK. I'm assuming you weren't just calling to make sure it works.”
“No. Quill came across an interesting piece of merchandise that we thought you or your… friends” (Rocket somehow made it sound derogatory.) “might be interested in.”
Poe glanced around the command center, wondering if General Organa was around by any stroke of luck. He blinked. Every one of the unusually large number of people currently in the room was watching the conversation play out in more-or-less open fascination. You could have heard a pin drop.
He glanced back at Rocket, as his full sentence sank in. “Who's Quill?”
Rocket frowned at him, one ear cocking quizzically. Then his expression cleared. “Riiight. You haven't met the morons yet.” He turned towards someone out of sight and shouted “Quill! Poe's on the line! Where's the thing?”
“I told you it's in the aft compartment.” A human man entered the hologram. He glanced towards Poe and frowned. "It's—Wait, that's Poe?” He peered at him for a second. “Weird. I expected you to be a tree."
Rocket stared at him. "Why would he be a tree, you moron?!"
"You said Groot knew him when they were kids! I made an assumption! A wrong assumption, clearly!"
