Traintober 2024 Day 2: The Game
from the Victorian Railways Newsletter , September 1949
A bit of a history related post today, I am going to natter a bit about railway footy.
The Victorian Railways Institute, a school set up by the VR to educate their employees, had its own amateur Australian Rules competition. This was not uncommon in Victoria where company leagues could spring up in particular avenues of employment (there even a State Bank league for bank employees).
Nor was this uncommon with railways generally, as some of the Big Four railway companies in Britain provided sporting clubs for their employees to participate in.
But the VRI Football League was notable for having players within it that competed in the major leagues as well, the top tier Victorian Football League (the one that is now the Australian Football League today) and the second string Victorian Football Association (which exists only as a rump to the AFL now).
The teams were generally made up of enginemen and staff from various railway lines (Coburg Line, Essendon Line, Heidelberg Line or "Suburban Line"), stations (Flinders Street Station), divisions (Car and Wagon, Goods, railway police), workshops and marshalling yards (North Melbourne Loco, Melbourne Yard, Spotswood). Its to be noted that they did not all compete at at once, seasons running with a few teams on the park according to availability.
They apparently played on Tuesday afternoons and were unpaid, though umpires were paid £2 for the afternoon.
The league competition apparently did keep running until recently but I need to do more research.
Information on hand regarding the VRI-FL is a little difficult to get through so I mainly cribbed this info from "What A Journey" by former VR Station Master Thomas Yates and these fellows here.

I hope this isn't offensive but Aussies watch NFL? <3
yes but its definitely a younger thing and not at all as much as other sports and i checked and there IS a minor gridiron (what we call american football) governing body here but they're pretty small and id never heard of them till now 💀
its cos we have AFL (australian football league) that plays aussie rules football. we're kinda like the usa in that we have our own kind of football and therefore call 'football' soccer. also honestly your football is SOOO pussy omg you guys wear pads and helmets? look at our glorious boys climbing all over each other sling tackling shoving each other in short shorts and jerseys and nothing else REAL MEN!!!
and our beautiful ball with the maccas logo on it. in terms of sports popularity in australia it goes AFL, cricket, rugby, soccer, tennis as the top 5, then basketball netball and maybe formula one. the MCG (melbourne cricket ground) is where all the big sports stuff is held and traffic and public transport is an absolute nightmare when there are games (i lived in melbourne which is THE home of the afl, since the afl used to be just for the state of victoria (vfl) which is where melbourne is)
HOWEVER. we are probably comparitavely one of the bigger non-american fans of american football, i checked and the superbowl had ~a million viewers. australians love sports and tv and ESPECIALLY gambling lol

Canadian Thanksgiving
Since 1957, Thanksgiving Day has been a holiday in Canada on the second Monday of October. Canadian Thanksgiving is a chance for people to give thanks for fortunes in the past year, including a good harvest. Below, we will explain what people do on Canadian Thanksgiving, as well as the ways that it differs from U.S. Thanksgiving. So, let’s find out more…
History Of Canadian Thanksgiving
Long before Canada celebrated thanksgiving, the native people of America held festivals and ceremonies to celebrate the completion and bounty of harvest way before European settlers and explorers arrived in what is known as Canada today. Early European thanksgivings took place in order to give thanks for some special fortune. One example of this is the ceremony that Martin Frobisher held in 1578. He held this ceremony after he survived an extensive journey in an aim to find a passage to Asia from Europe.
A lot of thanksgivings in the 18th century occurred after noteworthy events. The custom of a yearly thanksgiving festival was first brought to Canada as a result of refugees fleeing from the civil war in the United States. From 1879, Thanksgiving Day occurred each year, yet there were different themes and it was held on a different day every year. One of the most common themes for a lot of years was “Blessings of an abundant harvest.” Nevertheless, in later years King Edward VII’s coronation and Queen Victoria’s diamond and golden jubilees formed the theme in later years.
From the end of WW1 until 1930, both Thanksgiving Day and Armistice Day were celebrated on the Monday falling the closest to the 11th of November, which is the date that marked the official end of hostilities in WW1. Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day in 1931. Also, Thanksgiving was moved to a Monday in October. Since 1957, it has always occurred on the Second Monday of October.
Symbols Of Canadian Thanksgiving
Canadian Thanksgiving is associated with the European tradition of harvest festivals. At this time of year, a common image that people see is a horn – cornucopia – that is filled with seasonal vegetables and fruit. The cornucopia means ‘Horn of Plenty’ in Latin. In Ancient Greece, this was a symbol of plenty of bounty. Ears of corn, pumpkins, and turkeys, as well as large displays of food, are also used to symbolize Canadian Thanksgiving.
Is Canadian Thanksgiving A Public Holiday?
Yes; Canadian Thanksgiving is a public holiday in Canada. A lot of people have the day off work. All post offices and schools are also closed, as well as a lot of businesses and stores. There is also usually a reduced timetable in terms of public transport, with some services not running at all. Some areas have different rules and regulations. For example, in Nova Scotia, this day is deemed a retail closing day. This means that some retail companies are not allowed to open and employees have a legal right to refuse to work. In New Brunswick, this is deemed a day of rest. This means that businesses have to close on this day.
How to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving
A lot of people will have the day off work on Canadian Thanksgiving. This gives them a three-day weekend, which they will typically use to have family and friends in their own homes or visit those who live far away. It is a tradition to prepare a special meal to be eaten at some point throughout the weekend. This will traditionally include a roast turkey, as well as seasonal produce, for example, pecan nuts, corn ears, and pumpkin.
A lot of people also decided to take a short autumn vacation during this period. This is because it can be the final opportunity in a while for people to use holiday homes or cottages before the winter season sets in. Other activities that are popular during this time include outdoor breaks so that the amazing colors of the autumn in Canada can be admired, fishing, and hiking. If you are a fan of the Canadian Football League, you may decide to spend the three-day break enjoying the Thanksgiving Day Classic matches.
Of course, no matter how you decide to spend Canadian Thanksgiving, the main thing to remember is that this is a day of thanks. Therefore, it is important to spend some time reflecting on what you are thankful for. Make sure you take the opportunity to thank people who have played an important role in your life or done something special for you. A small ‘thank you’ goes a very long way.
Differences Between U.S. And Canadian Thanksgiving
Of course, a lot of people will think about the U.S when they hear the word thanksgiving, and so you may be wondering if the two holidays are observed in the same way. There are actually some key differences between both of them. For example, in the U.S. Black Friday – a huge retail sales event – is typically coupled with Thanksgiving. However, the Canadian equivalent of this is Boxing Day, and this happens two months after Thanksgiving.
You will also notice that parades and football are smaller affairs in Canada. Similarly to the U.S., you can expect football marathons to occur on the day, giving families the opportunity to watch plenty of sport. Aside from this, the traditions are pared down a little bit.
It is also worth pointing out that Thanksgiving Day in the United States takes place in November, not October. There are a number of reasons why this is the case. One is because the Canadian Thanksgiving is more about thanks for the harvest season, as opposed to being about the arrival of pilgrims. Another one is that Remembrance Day on 11 November is a Canadian holiday. So there would be two holidays very close together.

Markle versus the Beckhams by u/ElectricalAd9212
Markle versus the Beckhams So the latest story is that Markle and Harry are spitting because the Beckhams upset them by not behaving in a way that Her Divine Majesty Meghan deemed appropriate towards her.Lets compare and contrast these couples.David and Victoria are both from working class / lower middle class London backgrounds. Both worked hard for decades to achieve what they have achieved.David became a Champions League winning footballer and England captain, as well as a male style icon.Victoria became part of one of the most successful womens pop groups in history, and then became a successful fashion designer. They have a close relationship with their children and families. When the Queen died, Markle and Harry defiled her funeral with their vicious and hateful egotistical games, whilst David Beckham stood in the queue to pay his respects to Her Majesty as she lay in state, and said he did so to bow his head to our Queen, but also to represent his family and especially his late grandparents.Recently, the Beckhams have cemented their status as A list celebrities with longevity. They are middle aged but more relevant than ever, widely respected and liked. David has brought Lionel Messi to Miami, and they are living their best lives. The world's attention is on the Beckhams. They are rich, respected, influential, connected, trans-Atlantic, charitable, and loved. They are successful businesspeople. They have A list friends. They are down to earth, they are role models.Markle must be spitting watching them flourish and she must be in fury and rage. They are everything she thinks she should be but isn't. She can't be like them, because her personality is so warped and twisted, and the Beckhams are good people with good hearts. She is furious they didn't bow down to her, furious that they distanced themselves from them. From the couple who thought they could wage a war against the British monarchy and Queen and future King because of their petulant narcissism, it seems that Markle wants to wage war on the Beckhams. What a spectacle. What a pair of clowns. What a loathsome pair, thrown into deeper ugliness by the wonderful lives and hearts of those self made icons, the Beckhams. post link: https://ift.tt/pu2CS7T author: ElectricalAd9212 submitted: August 01, 2023 at 12:31PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

Entry 4 - Critical Analysis of Internship Application
When conducting my internship applications for both my graded assessment and to be eventually sent out to the organisations that I personally sought to be involved with, a focus was firstly made on aligning the skills and knowledge I know I have acquired over the years in study and in outside opportunities with what was required and recommended for the role at the given internship. It is stated by Roberts (2005) that putting forth one’s social identity (in this case, for a job search within the sports or sports media industry, headlining a consistent and lifelong passion and participation in sports) is vital to shaping the professional identity presented to organisations during job seeking (as cited in He & Kang, 2021). I already had in my mind the types of organisations that I would like to target, although I do understand the value of putting yourself out there by placing yourself in an organisation of a sport you know little about, seeking opportunities that truly spoke to me was important in being truthful in my application and not seeming genuine. The three applications I used were for Fox Sports (Fox Footy), Outer East Football Netball League, and Basketball Victoria. The latter, for instance, was crucial as basketball has always been a spark in my life and something that I always can lean back on as it’s my deepest passion. Making sure to display that love and passion for the sport was integral in showcasing my yearning to be involved with Basketball Victoria in any way which is shown through my history with sport in my local community. This likewise applied to my applications for each of Fox Footy and Outer East FNL, by highlighting my long involvement and passion for football locally along with my love for the AFL. When applying for positions that require experience and skills not necessarily developed yet, it was important to be upfront and honest about these limitations but still show a desire to be taught these newfound skills that widen your skillset and chance for opportunities in the future. For example, by being forthcoming about my lack of experience with video production for my Fox Footy application, I still showed a commitment and desire to learn new skills even despite having no prior knowledge of said tools. With each of the three internship applications, I made sure to be as straight as possible with them about my garnered abilities from my prior work experiences in sports while also noting on my commitment to learning new skills when taking on the position.

Football Survey 2023
Started this last year, so why not make it a tradition?
Top 5 games of the year?
Arsenal 3 Chelsea 1, 4th March, Selhurst Park (Continental Cup final)
Haywards Heath Town 2 Chatham Town 4, 12th November, Hanbury Stadium (FA Cup 1st round)
Valerenga 4 Avaldsnes 0, 17th April, Intility Arena (Toppserien)
Arsenal 2 Bayern Munich 0, 29th March, Emirates Stadium (Champions League quarter final)
Arsenal 2 Wolfsburg 3 (aet), 1st May, Emirates Stadium (Champions League semi final)
Total number of matches?
Eight, slightly down from last year but life got in the way (also there wasn't an international tournament hosted in my country).
First match of the year?
Gillingham 2 Grimsby Town 1, 14th February (yes, I spent valentine's day in the most romantic place on earth!)
Last match of the year?
Gillingham 0 Crawley Town 2, 26th December (yes, I spent the day after Christmas at the most magical place on earth!)
Most surprising game?
Arsenal 2 Wolfsburg 3 (aet), given Arsenal's injury woes I wasn't expecting them to run Wob so close!
Most disappointing?
The first half of the Gillingham game vs Grimsby - this was my first men's game in England in nearly five years and the quality of football was 10x worse than the women's game I was used to for much more money. It was cold, abject and nearly turned me off men's football for life. If it wasn't for the next train being cancelled I would've left at half-time - thankfully I stayed, saw a significant improvement in the second half and a last minute winner!
Farthest travelled?
Intility Arena in Oslo, around 1000 miles/1,600km from my front door.
States attended games in?
Cheerful, grateful, euphoric, bored, knackered and achy.
Stadium most visited?
Gillingham's Priestfield stadium and Arsenal's Emirates, both twice.
Worst injury?
I got surprisingly sunburnt for the Champions League semi-final in May.
Most expensive ticket?
Gillingham, for £22. This was cheaper than a Champions League quarter final (£9) and semi final (£20, in the club lounge!). I can't even bring myself to joke about paying more for quality.
Player seen the most?
I saw a number of Arsenal players at least three times.
Best new discovery?
I've really enjoyed watching Victoria Pevlova play.
Bands seen this year that also broke up this year?
I’m not sure how to make this football related, but I’m open to suggestions.
Friends made at games?
None, I've kept myself to myself this year.
Footballers met?
After the Valerenga game I saw while on holiday, which they won 4-0, they had a meet-and-greet with the entire squad in the stadium canteen afterwards. I got chatting with the American goalkeeper as we were both quite pleased to talk to someone in our native language and joked about her having a quiet game ("I let them have a corner because I was bored"). Due to the post covid landscape, and an abundance of small children holding suspiciously well written signs begging for players' shirts, I've not met any at English games. However, while out for my morning run around Brighton earlier this year, I passed a number of the Man Utd squad (including Leah Galton and a pre-Arsenal Alessia Russo) who were out for a stroll ahead of their FA Cup game at Lewes.
Best souvenir from a game?
I didn't get anything from games, but the new Gills home shirt really makes my eyes pop.
Longest time in line?
I've not really queued up at any games.
Games seen from the front row?
Arsenal’s game at Meadow Park I’ve seen from my favoured spot on the front row of the northern terraces. I spent the second half of Haywards Heath Town vs Chatham Town on the barrier, close enough that the Chatham players could hear and follow my joking time-wasting suggestions!
Most games in one month?
March and November tied for two games apiece.
Most games in one week?
Two - a Thursday night game Continental Cup game at Meadow Park, then a Sunday lunchtime FA Cup game at Haywards Heath Town, both in November.
Biggest crowd?
Arsenal vs Wolfsburg in the Champions League semi final at the Emirates set a record for a domestic women's game in England, at 60,603 people.
Smallest crowd?
If Haywards Heath vs Chatham broke three figures I'll be surprised. It's more likely that more people finished ahead of me at Lancing parkrun - one of the smaller ones in Sussex - the morning before, than were in the crowd.
Any drunk encounters?
I did not get to drink at my annual game abroad, as the Valerenga game only had alcohol-free beer. I did take advantage of attending a non-league game at Haywards Heath Town and was pleasantly merry for the start of the second half.
Top 5 best 2023 footballing moments:
An injury hit Arsenal taking Wolfsburg to the last minute of extra time despite having about three fit players at the end.
Making a women's game abroad an annual thing
Seeing matches across five different competitions this year (League 2, Continental Cup, Toppserien, Champions League, FA Cup)
The Youtube algorithm seems to keep showing me Argentinian games live whenever I have the TV to myself for an evening!
Taking in a football match with my dad for the first time in a decade.
Top 3 worst 2023 footballing moments:
I've been on holiday to Italy three times and still not managed to see a Serie A game. The original holiday was booked to coincide with a Gillingham friendly there but was postponed due to a family tragedy (the second of the year). We rebooked it for early September, thinking that the season will have started and at least one of the three clubs that play around Milan would have a home game, only to find that the season didn't begin until October. Maybe next year?
As mentioned above, the first half of Gillingham vs Grimsby was dreadful. Even by Gillingham's standards. Especially by Gillingham's standards.
More of a personal one than a footballing one, but after the Arsenal vs Bristol City game in November, I happened to notice a tweet comparing the turnout for a midweek cup game - which was a sell-out weeks before the game - with an equivalent fixture in 2019, which was sparsely attended. My initial positive thought about the growth being good for the women's game quickly saw my mood plummet when I realised that it didn't need my help any longer and led me down an existential rabbit hole when I realised how little difference it would make if I didn't attend any of the matches/gigs I've got lined up next year - after all, Taylor Swift isn't gonna see a space in the crowd and think "wow, James isn't here, I hope he's ok", is she? Thankfully I managed to snap out of it, get some sleep and park that train of thought to pick up again with a therapist in the new year, but it was a concerning thing.

David Beckham Gets Hands-On, Brightens Teeth of Lionel Messi's Mural
Lionel Messi, the renowned footballer, is set to make his debut for Inter Miami on July 21, when the Major League Soccer (MLS) club takes on Mexico's Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup opener. After leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Messi joined Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, following his decision not to renew his contract with FC Barcelona.
In preparation for Messi's arrival, David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami, took matters into his own hands by personally enhancing a large mural depicting the football star. The artwork, believed to have been started by Beckham's wife Victoria, serves as a tribute to Messi and a warm welcome for his upcoming visit.
The anticipation surrounding Messi's move to Inter Miami has generated excitement and curiosity throughout the United States. The mural, completed by Beckham himself, showcases his commitment to the team and the MLS. It symbolizes a significant achievement for Inter Miami and the league to have one of the greatest players in history join their ranks.
Messi's decision to join Inter Miami represents a fresh start and a change of environment after his successful stint in European football. He and his family opted to move to the United States, declining offers to return to Barcelona or join Saudi Arabian clubs in pursuit of becoming the richest athlete of all time. Messi emphasized his desire for new opportunities outside of European football, a chance to focus on his loved ones, and an alternative footballing experience.
With Messi donning Inter Miami's jersey for the first time on July 21, the MLS club eagerly awaits his debut in the Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul. Beckham's personal involvement in brightening Messi's mural exemplifies the enthusiasm surrounding the football superstar's arrival in Miami and his potential impact on the team.

4. The Business Side of AFL: Finances and Sponsorships
The financial aspect of the AFL is just as important as the gameplay itself. The league is funded through various sources including ticket sales, merchandise sales, and sponsorships. These funds are then distributed amongst the clubs to cover expenses such as player salaries, travel costs, and team facilities.
One of the primary sources of revenue for the AFL is sponsorships. Major brands such as Toyota, Coca-Cola, and McDonald's are among the league's top sponsors. These companies provide financial support to the league in exchange for branding and advertising opportunities during games and events.
Team sponsorship is also a significant component of the AFL's financial structure. Each team has partnerships with local and national companies, with logos and branding prominently displayed on the team uniforms and throughout team facilities. These sponsors often provide financial support for team operations and events, and in return receive advertising exposure to the team's fan base and beyond.
Another important source of revenue for the AFL is broadcasting rights. The league has lucrative deals with major television networks and streaming services to televise games and provide online access to live and recorded games. These deals provide significant revenue for the league and its teams and help to expand the AFL's reach beyond Australia to international audiences.
Overall, the business side of the AFL is crucial to the success and sustainability of the league and its teams. Strong financial support from sponsors and revenue streams like broadcasting rights ensure that the AFL can continue to grow and provide entertainment to fans around the world.
5. AFL Broadcasting and Media Coverage
The AFL has a massive following across Australia and beyond. In recent years, the league has expanded its reach beyond traditional television broadcasting. It has evolved to include football livestreaming, social media coverage, and other innovative digital media approaches.
The AFL has a strong media presence that covers a broad range of media platforms. Television broadcast is still the primary source of media coverage, with major networks such as Channel 7, Foxtel, and Kayo providing comprehensive coverage of the games.
The AFL utilizes social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to complement television broadcasting. These platforms deliver real-time updates, highlights, and commentary, keeping the fans connected throughout the season.
Livestreaming has become increasingly popular lately. Subscription-based streaming services such as Kayo, Telstra TV, and Foxtel Go offer fans access to watch the games live and on-demand. This approach serves Australians outside of the country as well, where they can stream and watch live games online.
AFL also produces a wide range of content, including documentaries, podcasts, and video clips, available for fans on the league's website and social media platforms. This content provides fans with behind-the-scenes access, interviews with players and coaches, and various insights into the league.
In conclusion, AFL's media coverage is multi-faceted, reaching a diverse and large audience globally, including die-hard AFL fans and casual viewers. Keeping up with modern times, the AFL utilizes various media forms, ensuring its fan base stays engaged and excited throughout the season.

Entry 1: About me page including: a brief on your background, sports interests, work experiences, and career ambitions. In addition: a reflection on your study performance to date and areas to improve, expectations and aspirations for this subject, and your internship.
My name is Teagan Burton, and I am a current Holmesglen student in my final year of a Bachelor of Sports Business.
I currently play professional basketball in the BigV league with the Sherbrooke Suns and have recently joined the Upwey-Tecoma Tigers Football team. I have been playing basketball since 6 years old and have now reached the highest league in the BigV.
My previous work experience involves working in a warehouse for a small company, packing and distributing orders, and continuing to complete the same role at Bunnings Warehouse during covid. I then moved into my current role at Epworth Eastern Hospital inpatient services as a business office where I deal with patients’ health insurance and admit them into the hospital. Within the workplace, it is important that workers are able to express their emotions and their concerns within the organisation (Sloan, 2007).
I am currently unsure of my exact career path and my career ambitions, but I am eager to take on any roles that gauge my attention. I am enjoying my current role at Epworth Hospital working with patients and customers and would love to be able to assist people in the sporting aspect.
In 2020 I completed a double diploma in Sports Development and Event Management. From there I transitioned into a Bachelor of Sport’s business beginning in 2021. My study performance throughout the last 3 years to now has greatly improved since I began this degree. Over the years I adjusted to the large workload increase and provided sufficient work to my assignments. My areas to improve are managing my workload with working and then further adjusting when I begin my internship. My expectations for this year are that it is going to be a year full of work and obstacles but an exciting time as finishing my degree.
I am currently beginning the preparation for my internship and am hoping to complete my internship with Basketball Victoria. I have also been seeking my own internship at South East Melbourne Phoenix which is an NBL club located at State Basketball Centre. I am hoping to obtain an internship with Basketball Victoria or South East Phoenix due to my experience in basketball. I look forward to experiencing my final year at Holmesglen and look forward to the internship that I obtain.
