Filter coffee in Paris! - I went to Saravana Bhavan because I was craving some flavours of home. The filter coffee transported me across time zones to the streets of Mumbai (I know it’s not from there, but the Udipi cafes are famous for their coffees). Love it :) - #eatingoutloudtheblog #filtercoffee #saravanabhavan #yum #pariseats #foodinparis #foodieinparis (à Saravanaa Bhavan Paris) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUQRNo7tEQ5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello Everyone! Let’s start with one of my all time favourites. Paris=Good Food
-La Cuisine de Philippe-
Located just south of the river. Home to the most flavours we experienced in Paris.
Just to be sure the Soufflé’s were done correctly we tried them in every format possible!
A must visit when in Paris! Making me hungry just thinking back!
Bon Appétit!

Day 103 - Oops
Day 100
Was busy enough packing and Black Friday shopping last Friday that I totally forgot that it was my 100th day abroad! Wow! Milestone achievement? Nah. Maybe. But I should've celebrated nonetheless. You know, alone. Why not? But I forgot. Even if I'd only realized it 10 hours before and told myself to remind myself...but when I go to sleep brain resets. Yup. Sucks to have exams in the morning. And now I'm hurriedly tying loose ends so I can have fun that next two weeks even more north where it's even colder than here right now in Paris...brrr...
Until the next bite! I had traditional French fare last night so I'll write about it...sometime. Soon-ish. Still gotta post those photos....

Day 99 - A thought from yesterday and a realization today (just now)
(This was drafted yesterday while on the metro.)
Day 98
I really shouldn't be blogging at the moment considering I have a final tomorrow to study for, but it suddenly struck me that I do like Paris after all. Yes, there is relatively nice weather today and that is affecting my mood (blue skies and blue waters will do that to me ^^) but I honestly feel that I like this city. Despite all that has happened with my exchange since the beginning, counting in the bureaucracy, the people, politics, and culture, and this, in my North American eyes, stupidly administrated school lacking proper logistics and inconvenient organizational structure; yes, considering all the miseries the grander outcome is that I still do like Paris. It's just that I came here in the completely wrong context. I should not have made my first trip to this city an academic endeavour. There are a lot of factors going into why school takes over my life, but at least now through all the pain and suffering I have learned many things about myself and the way I function away from home, away from UBC, away from Vancouver, and away from all that I've ever known. I've adopted new outlooks on life and repositioned old ones, and shed a lot of tears in the process too, but the overarching result is a, I wouldn't say better, but (internally) different me. A class that I took in this supposedly acclaimed school has made me look critically at culture and hence myself; my own behaviour, thoughts and perceptions as posed inside of the culture(s) which I belong. I am going to be leaving soon enough but am glad to be leaving Paris on a slightly more positive than neutral note. Paris, I will be back!
This is a pretty premature note given the way I'm currently ending it but my mindset has already taken to a "farewell" kind of gear mode. Anyways before I can actually leave I must tackle tomorrow's final and finish that critical paper!!! Back to studying... >o<
Until the next bite, Vivian
P.S. and sorry I have posted those pictures yet. There's only going to e more and more added to that so...well in due time. XD I believe that those who want to see them will come back to see them. In the meantime you can find some on my Instagram. I know I'm speaking to thin air but oh well. Those of you reading this probably already have me on Facebook and I'll also be uploading them (more, even) there, so maybe this is redundant. And I haven't gone out to eat in Paris as much as I had wanted to. Everything is so expensive here, especially food, that I wouldn't go to a restaurant without companions, and, well, that's another story. Point is, there will be more travel pics than food pics, and even then, I'll try to limit the ones I put here. Just takes too long to upload! Tumblr is for gifs...(and not lots of large-sized photos)
Day 99
Oh my gosh! Tomorrow marks the 100th day of my exchange! 100 days away from home!

Day 82 - Sudden thoughts
A random, sporadic urge to post on something I've come to realize recently.  It seems that this exchange has "inflated my ego" or raised my self-esteem, which, should be seen as a positive thing since I've always been one to beat myself up over things.
The strangers whom I have met and had proper, serious conversations with (those in the working class in their mid-ages anyway) have all told me one similar thing: that I am mature, wise, have a good head on, or will go on to do great things one day. Well, my, thank you for the compliments! I do not know if I should take these words of praise with a grain of salt, being strangers, I can question the sincerity of their words. But then the flip side of the equation is also because they are strangers, for what reasons would they need to flatter me? I don't know, but I do believe that they meant what they said, because if it was a unique case then I would take it lightly as just a simple compliment but similar observations have been made consistently by people I have met only for the first time. From friends of my homestay, or customers at the table next to me at a restaurant in Italy, or even back home from professors I have spoken with, it's the same. The only time we have spent together is a conversation over the dinner table, and yet they would make this judgment of me from just that.
It intrigues me to mull over why they think so well of me having just met me. And then I remind myself these people have been through many walks of life and I should believe in their opinions, "They know more than you, Vivian. Trust them. You are meant to do great things. Fulfill your destiny."
Okay, I'm getting a bit carried away. This isn't a superhero drama. But hopefully I've made my point across. I want to believe in these folks who have inadvertently raised my self esteem in their kind, strong words.
I believe that different people appear in your life at different times for different reasons. The timing does matter and certain people you are fated to meet only during those times, even if you wish you'd known them before or never at all. It was simply, meant to be. I don't believe in superhuman beings who created the earth and has power over you but I do believe in karma, and more importantly, fate. Some people you will meet and wish they could have stayed in your life longer, while others you feel like couldn't have gotten out (seriously, gtfo) quickly enough. I feel that these strangers who have given me such positive energy have appeared at a unique time in my life. It's probable that I would not have pondered upon their words so critically had it not occurred to me while I am abroad on exchange. I probably would have just brushed it off casually as nice words, like I so often do back home because that's just the way people are here.
Sigh, genuineness is so hard to come by these days.
Thank you, strangers. Your thoughts were much, much appreciated, more than you will ever know (about my past, and my record of low self-esteem).
Until the next bite,
Vivian
P.S. Wouldn't "genuinuity" be such a cool word if it existed?

Day 79 - Recap!
Sorry it's been so long! It's been a month since I last updated?!? My exchange is more than halfway over, and I've lost count of the days now...our "vacances scolaires" or aka reading week has come and gone and although I should be working on my numerous papers and finals, I want to blog a bit, since it is long overdue.
I've gone on two trips since I last blogged, and that would be why I haven't really had time to blog. Coming back from one trip, I had lots to do before going on reading week break. And here, everyone travels away for reading week...
Me? Well...I went to Italy! Did a 10.5 day trip from Rome to Milan, with Pisa, Florence, and Venice in between. It was a fun trip with its rough start and end but overall enjoyed it very much. Ate lots too! ;P Can't wait my trip with you but first I should go back and blog about the days I should do first...
Day 45 - Paris
So in my previous post from long ago that surely you've forgotten, I spent the weekend with a visiting friend. Because I had dropped my phone in the toilet (sigh, long story short, I thought it'd stay in my pocket T___T) I had to send it in to a shop. And leaving that shop, we just decided to walk around the area, which was the 2eme arrondisement. To our happy surprise we stumbled upon these cool covered passageways full of shops (some weren't open), something that my friend had tried to find before but couldn't, and now we find it by chance! It's pretty awesome because I never even knew these passageways existed...
Leaving these covered passages we were back where we started and walk by Musée Crévin, a wax museum, and to my surprise, Hard Rock Café! My friend asked if I was going to get a shirt, because the thing with Hard Rock is that people collect shirts from around the world. And I thought to myself, "Heck no, if I start collecting these, I'll never be satisfied because I can't collect them all! I'd rather not be unhappy from trying to collecting them but never having a complete collection." So off we went to our next stop...
...Galeries Lafayette, which, I must say, is super gorgeous in the center! :D
After, we were famished from all the walking we did...
And so we, for some reason I forget, went all the way over to the 6eme and had mussels...yummy, delicious, mussels...and a decent crème brûlée, but it was nothing like the amazing one I had last time during dinner the day I went to Versailles...did I ever write about that? Geez, Vivian! I keep missing stuff! I'll go back, like I keep saying I will. Once I'm finished my exchange and home I'll have more time to go back and cover everything, albeit a long process and if you do actually want to read about it, it could stretch on for months.
Our last plan for the day was to see the Eiffel Tower at night! Pretty lights!!!
And then I felt super faint and sick and had a stomachache and could barely stand on my own two feet, my brain was boiling and I just wanted to lay down and curl into a ball...
[Pictures are to come, I promise! Check back in a couple of weeks if you want to see them! For sure they should be up by then...if only Tumblr had a quicker photo uploading/embedding feature.]
Day 46 - Paris
---See end of post---
Day 52 - Off to the land of the Catalans~
My first trip since the start of school! Unlike other exchange students, I haven't been travelling every chance I get every weekend. In September I was going through my own issues as you may have read about in my previous blog posts but after that was settled I have tried to plan things but they always fall through because I try to match with other people. Being fed up, I've decided to forget other people and just do it on my own. And then I find someone who's going the same weekend, funny how things work out...
Sooo~ I went to Barcelona for a few days. Although I made the plans about a week and a half in advance, it was kind of a sudden decision to go at this time.
Arriving in Barcelona, it felt great to see some sunshine!
I checked in to my hostel and meet up with my schoolmate, then we went and had some (kind of expensive) lunch at a seafood place that's evidently Japanese fusion soon as we see the menu. It was pretty good though!
And look what we walk by on our way to the metro!...
Our hostel is really close to Casa Batillo, one of the famous houses-turned-museums by Gaudi.
Afterwards we went on a small walking tour of Barcelona...
And had this Spanish "tortilla" at the end of it. It was an omelette more than anything, nothing like the Mexican tortillas we know back in North America!
Walking along the port we see this guy making bubbles, and as the sun sets we spend a good half hour just watching him make bubbles...and taking photos.
We were hungry and before we could make it to have dinner, we got a pre-dinner sweet snack...
Finally reaching our dinner destination...Spanish tapas!! :D Can't go to Spain and not have some traditional tapas!
And last stop of the day, we wanted to go see a water fountain and lights show but sadly the tour guide from the walking tour said it's from 7-10 pm but when we arrived at 9:30 we were told it's only from 7-9 pm, so we missed it. :( We'd have come earlier but we were so hungry dinner had to come first...and the foodie me, that's A-OK! The tapas were so good... ^ ^V
Oh, and on the way to the fountain there was this small Oktoberfest festival with a beer tent and amusement park rides...obviously it's not the actual one, that's in Munich!
That's it for the first day, lots of walking and very tired feet! But happy stomach and couldn't wait to hit the hay...
[Pictures are to come, I promise! Check back in a couple of weeks if you want to see them! I have to sort and upload them...for sure they should be up by then...if only Tumblr had a quicker photo uploading/embedding feature.]
Day 53 - //
I'm too tired to do this any longer, I've already spent like 2 hours writing just this, covering two days, and no pictures have been uploaded yet! (Sorry I'm sure you'd rather see pictures than read writing!)
I want to give detail, because I don't want to just brief state what I did each day, that would be boring. I did A, B, C, D today. Okay, so what? What were your feelings and thoughts on it? Pointless to blog if no personal opinions can be heard...
But there's just too much to be said, so I'll have to break it up and those who really want to read it, I know will read it no matter how many months the time gap is. Wish I could blog in real time...have my brain hooked up to a computer that can translate my thoughts into computer bits. That would make life so, so much easier!
So sorry for the confusing order and jumping back and forth between dates! :(
Until the next bite,
Vivian
