HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF
Since I'm incredibly anxious and very much annoyed, I'm compiling this post as a sort of master list of relief organizations and individual fundraisers for those in the path of Hurricane Helene.
Many of the links I post on this won't be individuals, but I encourage those within the path to add their links to this post in reblogs! Likewise, if you have any organizations / volunteer / grassroots efforts y'all would like to share, please do so!
LAST EDITED: 9/29/2024 - MAKE SURE TO CHECK REBLOGS FOR UPDATES!
My list is particularly focused on widely accessible resources, as well as Florida specific resources since... I'm from Florida.
(INTER)NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
American Red Cross - The American Red Cross is on the ground helping people as Hurricane Helene approaches land as a very dangerous storm. Helene may produce winds over 150 mph, a massive 20-foot-high storm surge and as much as a foot of rain. Prolonged power outages and tornadoes may occur. The effects will be felt hundreds of miles inland including in Georgia and the Carolinas.
FEMA Disaster Assistance Improvement Program - The Disaster Assistance Improvement Program’s (DAIP) mission is to provide disaster survivors with information, support, services, and a means to access and apply for disaster assistance through joint data-sharing efforts between federal, tribal, state, local, and private sector partners.
Roll Mobility - An application that equips wheelchair users with reliable information about the accessibility of restaurants, public spaces, businesses, trails, and parking areas. Good information to have on hand, especially for those evacuating from their home areas.
Warmline Directory - Providing extensive yet accessible resources that empower individuals to find the mental health and wellness resources they need through a directory containing accurate and in-depth information. For those unfamiliar: Unlike a crisis line, a warm line operator is unlikely to call the police or have someone locked up if they talk about suicidal or self-harming thoughts or behaviors. A good resource for individuals in mental distress due to natural disaster circumstances.
Food Not Bombs - Recovers food that would have been discarded and share it as a way of protesting war and poverty. They also reduce food waste and meet the direct need of communities by collecting discarded food, preparing vegan meals that they share with the hungry while providing literature about the need to change our society. Food Not Bombs also provides food to protesters and striking workers and organizes food relief after natural and political crisis.
Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies - The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies (The Partnership) is the only U.S. disability-led, 501(c)(3) organization that prioritizes equity, access, disability rights, disability justice, and full inclusion of people with disabilities, older adults, and people with access and functional needs before, during and after disasters and emergencies.
FLORIDA
Volunteer Florida Disaster Fund - The Florida Disaster Fund is the State of Florida’s official private fund established to assist Florida’s communities as they respond to and recover during times of emergency or disaster. In partnership with the public sector, private sector and other non-governmental organizations, the Florida Disaster Fund supports response and recovery activities.
State and Local Level Referrals - When a disaster occurs, local governments often work together with community leaders and organizations to provide on-the-ground emergency management. Curated by FEMA. (Has 52 Organizations Listed)
GEORGIA
State and Local Level Referrals - When a disaster occurs, local governments often work together with community leaders and organizations to provide on-the-ground emergency management. Curated by FEMA. (Has 60 Organizations Listed)
TENNESSEE
State and Local Level Referrals - When a disaster occurs, local governments often work together with community leaders and organizations to provide on-the-ground emergency management. Curated by FEMA. (Has 49 Organizations Listed)
NORTH CAROLINA
State and Local Level Referrals - When a disaster occurs, local governments often work together with community leaders and organizations to provide on-the-ground emergency management. Curated by FEMA. (Has 45 Organizations Listed)
Beloved Asheville - A community-led coalition dedicated to providing home, healthy, equity, and opportunity for all.
Triangle NC - This links to another post I've made, but Triangle Mutual Aid is organizing supply drop offs as well as financial support.
SOUTH CAROLINA
State and Local Level Referrals - When a disaster occurs, local governments often work together with community leaders and organizations to provide on-the-ground emergency management. Curated by FEMA. (Has 44 Organizations Listed)
INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISERS
Support a Resilient Family Seeking a New Home - LINK ; Tumblr @junpei-iori-ace-defective (Close Friend of the Affected) | Fundraiser Text Below:
My name is Adam. I'm not the best at this; I never thought I'd have to do this, but my family and I lost our home on September 26th due to the hurricane Helene here in Florida. No one in our area thought it would get bad, but we didn't have any rain. All of a sudden, the water rose, and by midnight, our home was flooded with three feet of water. I had to carry our pets to the neighbors and my disabled wife through five feet of water. Then, my elderly disabled mother and grandmother through the water. We lost all of our clothes and many of our belongings, and our landlord will be having us move out. We have nowhere to go, so today I'm asking for help from the kindness of the world. Anything can help. If I can get enough to get us into a new home, it would be a blessing. Thank you all, and God bless.
Help Rebuild Lives After Devastating Flash Flood - LINK ; Tumblr @undeadnecromancer (Close Friend of the Affected) | Fundraiser Text Below:
On September 27, after being trapped in a flash flood for 5 hours, my father, Jeffrey Fuller, and sister, Kayla Fuller, left with their lives ❤️ but lost everything else. My father had set his life up to be simple and enjoyable. He didn't have a lot extra, but he had everything he needed, and now all of that is gone. Unfortunately, he did not have flood insurance, and the older you get, the harder it is to bounce back from something like this. For a man who has always shown up for everyone he loves, he needs us to show up now. Please help my father rebuild.
If you have seen the video circulating around from Jeffrey Fuller where it looks like a river is going through his house and he ends it with a “Love you all,” you have seen what has brought on this devastation.
Hurricane Helene Aftermath Help - LINK ; Tumblr @moonenjoyer (Affected Individual) | Fundraiser Text Below:
Man I hate to do this but I'm in Valdosta, one of the cities hit the worse by Hurricane Helene. It's BAD here. In particular, there's no estimate of when we'll get power back. Word on the street is it could be a week or longer.
I work from home and going without power that long, I won't be making any money. Meanwhile my groceries are all spoiled in a fridge with no power and my car is on E. All the gas stations are down atm and when they're back up I KNOW gas prices are going to be crazy high because of all of this. In fact, EVERYTHING is going to be more expensive for a while because of this.
If you have anything to spare to help me with gas and groceries and just surviving this, I'd really appreciate it. If not, a reblog/share would mean a lot. Thank you ❤️
Save Nate and Amanda's First Home - Urgent Hurricane Needs - LINK ; Tumblr @luckyfirerabbit (Affected Individual) | Fundraiser Text Below:
Hi. I'm Porter Henderson. This isn't about me, though. You’re going to see a lot of fundraisers with Hurricane Helene. This might be a little different.
You see, I’m writing this on behalf of my landlords and friends, Nate and Amanda. The home we share with an additional disabled man in Lithonia, Georgia had some repairs that they couldn't afford, made much worse by the hurricane. They'd been limping along like everyone dealing with inflation and underemployment, but the situation has become urgent, and they need and deserve help.
Nate and Amanda have been my friends for over a decade, and when they heard I was no longer able to work and in a bad situation, they offered me a place in their first home. I told them I wasn’t sure what or when I would be able to pay. They told me that if I ever won my disability case I could start paying rent then.
You see, I'm trying so hard to save this home because they’ve tried so hard to save me.
I was so grateful to move in, and they treated me like family. When I lost the ability to drive, they made sure I got to my doctor’s appointments, and still do. When I can’t afford food, they take me to food banks, and what I can’t find there they’ll help me get at the store. They meet all the needs they could reasonably meet, and then a couple more.
I’ve lived here for three years now, and they’ve never stopped assuring me that I am wanted, even if I can’t contribute to the household on a daily basis. They have never let me go without if there was any other way. They have helped friends and strangers every time they have seen a need. They are unfailingly honest, incredibly trustworthy, and extremely hardworking people.
They've never had much, but they've shared everything they have.
Now, though, the hurricane turned a seem in our roof into a gushing waterfall, and finally into a large hole in Nate and Amanda's bedroom ceiling.
We tarped the leaking roof from the inside to channel out as much water as we could, but with a literal hurricane outside, there’s only so much that you can do.
The three of us who couldn’t get into the attic pushed our chronically ill bodies past their limits, dragging furniture away from walls, hauling totes as fast as we could with our canes, shoving empty containers into the corner as we kicked the debris out, and researching strategies for how to deal with the nightmare. Later we would wade through flooding water to dump out rain and tie down loose trash cans, shine lights and relay directions from the attic to outside, as we all attempted to get the water venting outside the house.
To make matters worse, the HVAC needs to be replaced. It’s a seventeen year old system, with a huge crack in the (inaccessible) drain pan and a bad motherboard. Some friends pooled money with Nate and Amanda to get a couple of window air conditioners for the summer. With medications that make three of us sensitive to heat, it’s been a rough summer, but we got through.
Unfortunately, winter is a few weeks away, and it’s going to be a little less than seventeen thousand for a new system to be installed.
What makes it an emergency however, is that without the drying and air movement of the AC, trying to dehumidify everything is going to be even harder, giving us a greater chance of mold. If mold takes hold, I'm not sure if we can save the house.
This fundraiser is for the $2,500 hurricane deductible that we're almost certainly going to be charged by the homeowner's policy and the $17,000 for the HVAC, plus estimated fees for the platform.
Not included in the total are any cleaning supplies, or a tiny storage unit and rental truck if we need one to store all of their bedroom furniture while the roof is redone. (We won't know about any of that until we get the estimate from insurance/roofing.) The claim has already been filed.
The air conditioning is a pre-existing problem, and I've found no way for it to be covered by any charity, government program, or private programs in the state. The ones that my social worker knew about didn't apply (I applied anyway) and I let her know about two more that I found. The religious groups I've reached out to in my area don't work in anything but clothing, children's furniture, and durable medical goods.
If additional costs emerge, or anything ends up being less expensive, I will update and adjust the goal accordingly as soon as I find out.
Please help these genuinely good people. The smallest donation helps. So does sharing.
Thank you in advance.

Federal Judge Gregory Presnell has placed a preliminary injunction on a Florida bill banning individuals under the age of 18 from attending drag performances.
[Note: "Preliminary injunction" means that the judge has blocked the law from going into effect. The ban is temporary, and is designed to keep the bill from being enforced or applied while the bill goes through the appeals process, where higher-level judges will rule on whether they agree with DeSantis, or with this judge.
Given how incredibly overbroad the law is, previous recent rulings on these issues, and this judge's ruling in particular, DeSantis's government will almost certainly have a difficult time convincing any not-a-total-right-wing-crony lawyer that the law is constitutional. Because, in fact, this law is a huge violation of the first amendment, which protects freedom of speech and freedom of expression.]
The law, dubbed the “Protection of Children Act,” would allow “the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to fine, suspend, or revoke the license of any public lodging, establishment, or public food service establishment if the establishment admits a child to an adult live performance.” DeSantis previously said that drag shows, which are covered by the ban, “sexualize” children.
In his ruling, Presnell sided with Hamburger Mary’s, a restaurant that hosts drag performances and sued the DeSantis administration, claiming that the restrictions implemented by the act were too broad and not only violated their first amendment rights but unfairly harmed their business.
In a move the DeSantis administration likely did not see coming, Presnell cited previous laws passed by the Florida governor in his reasoning for placing an injunction on the law. Presnell wrote that the Florida government had failed to sufficiently narrow the breadth of the ban to prevent its unjust application and its “inevitable clash with the Florida ‘Parents’ Bill of Rights’ and other laws.”
The “Parental Bill of Rights” was signed into law by DeSantis in July of 2021. The law, as quoted by Presnell states that “all parental rights are reserved to the parent of a minor child in this state…including…[t]he right to direct the upbringing and the moral or religious training of his or her minor child.”

We went to California for my work trip, and it really was great leaving from our little airport with its 7 gates down here in Florida. (I didn't get groped by TSA!) We spent 4 days in Napa, visiting the vineyards where we're members, drinking so much great wine, and eating so much great food, then my work event went great, and then we went back home to NYC for two weeks for Thanksgiving with my husband's family and to see all of our friends.
It was a little peek into what our life might be like if we lived in Florida full-time and just went back to NYC now and then. We went to our usual bar trivia and some movies at our favorite theater, but then I also went to a 2 Michelin star $700pp tasting menu with one of my co-workers (work paid, don't worry!) and we went to one of the holiday markets with my husband's sister who was in town from Poland. So, partly everyday things and partly NYC-specific things! I'm a little jealous of our friends back there hanging out without us, but I'm also very happy right now to not have any social responsibilities and to be able to eat a little lighter and focus a little on my YouTube channel (that's been growing!).
Anyway, I was inspired to post because I woke up this morning and the sun was shining in through the balcony doors, and I stood in front of them and watched the ocean waves hit the beach as I put on some pajama pants. And I love waking up in my NYC apartment, too, but there's something special about walking around with no pants with my wide open windows and knowing that no one can see me! 🙂
Also, we bought our first-ever air fryer, and because my husband loves a gadget, he's almost exclusively been the one to use it. And because it keeps setting off our smoke alarm, he's been obsessively cleaning it. He does a ton around our house in NYC, but cooking and washing the dishes is usually my domain! It's been a nice break for me.
And one more thing: I need to renew my passport, so yesterday we took my photo and then went to Walmart to get a money order to send with my application, and then we went to Office Depot to print out my application, and then we went to CVS to print out the photo, and then we went to the post office to mail everything. And everywhere we went, people were SO NICE. Employees went out of their way to help us at every store, like they were just INTERESTED in us and doing their jobs. People said hello to us when we walked into the stores. There are of course amazing employees in some NYC stores, but a lot of people act like saying hello to you even when you're literally standing in front of them at their register is just out of the realm of possibility. I don't know if people outside of NYC just have better manners or are just less tired because they don't have to deal with as many customers, but it is REFRESHING.
Okay, enough of my blathering, off to read your posts!

One last little mermay fic because it's the last day and I thought it would be cute (also I may be posting on June 1st technically, but I wrote the bulk of it yesterday so...).
Steve hadn't been working at the aquarium for long, but he loved every second of it. He'd moved out to California a while ago and he'd been down on his luck when Dustin came out one time to visit, all jazzed up about marine life, since it was his latest obsession, and he'd suckered him into a trip to the place before he left again for Hawkins. Steve had never had much interest in undersea life before, but as Dustin dragged him through the exhibits, he found himself in awe of all the beautiful creatures. At the end of their tour, he was buying Dustin a souvenir in the gift shop, when a large "Help Wanted!" sign caught his eye.
"That, uh, that sign," he asked the girl who was scanning the barcode on Dustin's stuffed seahorse and new San Diego Aquarium cap, "Is that just for the gift shop or is it the aquarium in general?"
"No, it's for the whole place. We are looking for a few people to be cashiers in here and the food court, but we're also looking for tour guides and trainers. The trainers have to have some kind of prior experience working with animals though, so just keep that in mind. Would you like an application?" She asked, her smile bright as she handed the younger boy the bag.
"Yes, please," Steve smiled back, and the girl handed him a small packet of papers fill out before smiling and greeting the next customer.
By the time they left, Steve had already returned the packet, completely filled out, to the right box, and two days later, he got a call to come in for an interview. He went, and an hour later, walked out with a job as a tour guide and a date to come in for his first day of training.
By now, nearly two months later, he knew the ins and outs of the entire place, and he could spit facts about sharks or jellyfish or anemone or sea cucumbers like he was listing the days of the week. He was one of the favorites among the tour groups, since he often made stupid dad jokes and gave out aquatic themed stickers to the kids. It was a hands-on aquarium, and a lot of the parents liked the gentle encouragements he would give their kids if they were scared to touch a certain animal, and the kind ways he would explain how to do it properly so as not to hurt the animals so that everything went smoothly. He was often handed tips from appreciative parents, and even though he always tried to refuse them, they always insisted he take them for helping their young kids to have such a positive experience. His fridge in his apartment was running out of room on the front of it from the amount of drawings kids would do for him, and he had made a note to get himself a little scrapbook or binder or something to keep them in so that he didn't have to throw them away to make room for new ones.
So yeah, Steve absolutely loved his job.
And when his boss pulled him aside one day and said that he wanted him to be the one to help launch the newest attraction on May 1st, he was more than happy to do it. He was just supposed to lead the families into the amphitheater that faced the biggest tank in the aquarium and get them pumped up to see some kind of show involving mermaids. He had no idea what it was or how it was going to work, but he was excited to do it, so he did.
Finally, May 1st rolled around and Steve was about to do his first presentation for a packed theater. He scrounged up some of the old confidence he'd had in high school and put on a huge smile as he walked out in front of the tank with his notes, quieting the families and greeting them before asking if they were ready to see some mermaids.
That's what the whole thing was about. It was supposed to be like that one attraction in Weeki Wachee, Florida, where they had the actresses that dressed up like mermaids and entertained families in while swimming under water. It was pretty much the same as that, but while the actors and actresses were swimming around, Steve was supposed to give a presentation on some fun facts about mermaids and then, at the very end, the families would get to pose for pictures with the actors while they were still in the tank. They were going to be going down with air nozzles from oxygen tanks in their hands, so that they could make cool bubble effects, but also so they could still breathe as they were underwater. It was actually really cool, in Steve's opinion, and he was excited to be giving the presentation.
"Okay, so as long as you're ready to meet our merpeople, we have to try and call to them so that they'll come out to see us. Merpeople are king of shy, so we have to be really loud when we call their names, okay? We have a lot of merpeople here at our aquarium, but the ones you're going to see today are named Pearl and Nero, so on the count of three, we're all going to say really loudly 'Hi, Pearl and Nero!', okay?" Steve said as he continued his opening, smiling wide along with a lot of the kids. They all nodded as he counted to three, and they shouted out for the two actors, and they swam over from where they'd dropped into the tank, somewhere off to the side where the audience wouldn't see them going in.
The first 'mermaid', a girl with curly dark hair and tan skin, swam over, wearing a bright red shell bra and a shimmering red tail that caught the light beautifully. She pretended to be shy as she swam over, but she smiled as a manta ray came up to her, and she pet it gently as the kids all oohed and aahed.
"Everybody, this is Pearl," Steve said, gesturing at the tank, and the actress waved back at the audience, flicking her tail as she swam all around and did little tricks. She could hold her breath for an incredible amount of time, only having to use the breathing tube thing once or twice in the past couple of minutes.
"Now, Pearl is a little bit more brave than our other merman, so we have to call out for him again to get him to come out, okay?" Steve said, and the kids all called out for the guy again. The actress in the water even gestured over to someone with her hand as she swam around and played with the fish and other creatures in the tank with her. Finally, the kids all cheered as another actor swam over, looking more timid as he did.
"Everybody, this is Nero," Steve said, and he gestured at the tank, almost forgetting his next bit in the script when he saw the man. He had blonde hair that flowed around his face in ringlets. He had a tiny hint of a mustache on his top lip and the most striking blue eyes Steve had ever seen. His tail was also blue, probably to match his eyes, and as he waved to the audience and smiled, Steve nearly fainted. He was muscular, but not overly so, and his arms looked strong and sturdy, much like the rest of him. And his smile was bright enough to light up the entire ocean if he wanted to.
Steve made himself refocus on his presentation as the actors played under the water, swimming around and playing with both each other and the creatures in the tank with them. They interacted with the crowd as Steve gave his presentation, doing certain motions to go along with the fun facts Steve was spouting, and just seeming to have fun with it. Steve was too, once he got over the initial shock of that gorgeous man swimming around behind him, and when the presentation was over, he both happy and sad about it. The next show was going to be done by another one of his coworkers, and two other actors would be playing the merpeople, so Steve decided to head back to where he knew the actors would be taking their breaks to see if he could get a chance to talk to the guy.
He found him and the other girl laughing backstage as they ate lunch and gossiped, and he was almost afraid to go in and talk to them. They both had towels wrapped around their heads to keep their long, wet hair out of the way as they ate, and they both still had their tails on, since they had one more show to do before they got to leave for the day.
"Oh, speak of the devil," the girl said to the guy, and she gestured to the door that Steve was standing at, smiling widely. "You're our presenter, right? We were just talking about you. You did a great job hyping up the kids for us. Although, your jokes were absolutely terrible. I'm Heather."
"Oh, uh, yeah, I'm Steve," the man said, walking further into the room with them and tucking some hair behind his ears nervously. "Sorry to interrupt, I just figured that I should probably introduce myself to you guys at some point since we'll be doing a lot of shows together. And I wanted to compliment you on your performance, it was really, really cool. I don't know how you can hold your breath for that long and keep your eyes open underwater and still to all those tricks and stuff. It was just really amazing."
"Thanks," Heather replied, taking another bite of her sandwich, "And to tell you the truth, it's really nothing special. Just lots and lots of practice."
"And the oxygen tanks help a lot," the man said, the first time he'd spoken since Steve first entered the room. He didn't seem like he'd be a quiet person, but Steve figured that maybe he just didn't really like new people. He could understand that. Still, he'd hoped that maybe he'd have more to say than just that. Heather seemed to notice this, because she looked between them for a second, rolled her eyes at the man, and then reached down to unzip a part of her tail and stick her feet out so that she could shuffle off into another part of the room, saying something about needing to use the bathroom and leaving the two alone.
"I meant what I said," Steve said, stepping closer to the other man, "Your performance was really good. I've never seen so many happy kids in one room before. And you didn't even seem like an actor half the time there. You actually seemed like you lived in the water for real. And I'll tell you, you got a set of balls on you, too. I'd never have the courage to swim straight up to a hammerhead and just start petting it like you did."
"Thank you," the man finally cracked a smile as a cute little blush rose to his cheeks. "Yeah, I've always loved the ocean and anything having to do with it. And normally, I wouldn't have the balls to swim right up to a shark, but we keep them pretty well fed here, so I had nothing to worry about. But still, thanks for the compliments." The man paused again, setting down his sandwich, wiping his hands on a napkin, and training those striking blue eyes on Steve while he stuck out his hand and said, "I'm Billy."
Steve shook his hand, and he could feel his own face lighting up with a smile.
"Nice to meet you," he said, his heart fluttering when the other man's face finally broke into a full grin.
"Likewise," he said, and they began to slip into a more casual conversation as Heather returned and she and Billy finished their lunches and got ready for the next performance. Steve would have to leave soon to get his microphone and his notes sheet again, but he stayed for as long as he could, quickly becoming friends with the two actors and making a few plans to make their next show an even bigger hit than the last one was. Finally, it was just a few minutes before Steve would have to start welcoming families back into the theater, and Billy went off somewhere to do one last thing before the show.
"Oh, and hey Steve, I have a quick question for you," Heather said, just before he left.
"Yeah?" Steve asked, stopping just short of the doorway.
"Can I get your number?" She asked, thrusting a napkin and pen into his hands. "It's not for me, though, it's for Billy. Y'know, just in case you were wondering. He nearly choked in the tank earlier when he first saw you through the glass, however blurry. And he said you had a nice voice. But he's too much of a wimp to ask you himself, so write a corny little note and leave him your number so that I don't have to hear about how out of his league you are for the next fifty years, because he will complain for that long."
Steve was taken aback at first, but he was flattered, and he liked the other guy, too, so he decided, why the heck not? He scribbled down a note and his phone number quickly, then high-tailed it out of the room to be in the theater for his cue, just as Billy came back over.
"Steve asked me to give this to you," Heather grinned like a shark, handing him the note. Billy took it, puzzled, and almost missed his own cue to get in the water as he read and reread it to make sure it sunk in.
Steve left him his number. And a terrible dad joke, but mostly his number, and said he wanted to go out with him sometime. He'd said he wanted to be 'part of his world', and as much as the pun made Billy roll his eyes, he couldn't help but find it cute. He could definitely arrange that. But first, he had to get back in the water, and hopefully nobody would notice as he stared at Steve's ass through the glass.
And if they did, he could just pass it off as a merman curious about how the humans walked around on their two large fins.

Genesis 19:26 - Lot’s wife turned into a pillar of salt
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
The angels tell Lot to gather up his family and flee because the city is going to be destroyed. Don’t look behind you, don’t stop anywhere in the plains, but flee to the hills or else you’ll also be swept away.
Lot, his wife, and two daughters leave. The Lord rains down brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot’s wife turns around to look and is turned into a pillar of salt. There is no further explanation, no moral of the story is given. She turns to salt and we move on.
—————————————————————
I have usually heard this taught as Lot's wife was turned to salt as punishment for disobeying the angels' warning. By looking back at the cities, it showed she secretly longed for that way of life, that’s where her heart was, and this made her unworthy.
Lot was saved because Abraham pleaded for him, not because Lot was worthy to be saved. Lot was accepted by the residents of Sodom because he was a wealthy man, he lives as they live, and yet the woman is held up as the problem. 🙄
Maybe the sound of destruction caused her to turn to look to see what is making that noise. Maybe she’s thinking of her married daughters and sons-in-law who stayed behind. Maybe it’s one last look to remember her home and the memories and her family there.
—————————————————————
These scripture stories aren’t literal accounts, they’re meant to convey lessons and principles, to teach us how to live our life correctly. The author could’ve said that Lot’s wife (she doesn’t even get a name) is vaporized or disintegrated or turned into sand and blown away. Instead it's a pillar of salt. What are they trying to convey by this detail?
Instead of assuming this was a curse, what if we view this as a blessing?
Salt is valuable, wars have been fought over it. Salt is a preservative and has been used to treat meat so that it lasts and doesn’t go bad. Salt can pickle foods for future use for when food isn’t as plentiful.
Our tears are salty and being made into salt can be seen as recognizing the tears she has at the loss of so much life.
By becoming a pillar of salt, has become a memorial preserving the memory of what happened.
When there is tragedy or suffering, often the only thing we can do is bear witness. I can’t cure your cancer, but I can sit with you as you deal with the consequences of the treatment. I can’t relieve the loss you feel as you mourn someone who has passed away, but I can be present with you. I can’t change the transphobic laws that passed in my home state of Florida, but I can let you share your fear with me.
There are people she loves in Sodom & Gomorrah. Perhaps she turned around to bear witness because she has pity for those who are there. For being a witness, she becomes a pillar of salt future people will see and recall this story.
—————————————————————
What would be a queer application of this?
Allies need to be witnesses to the pain inflicted on queer people. Allies need to testify of the suffering that the anti-gay and anti-trans laws cause in the lives of people they love. They need to testify of the results of theology that makes people feel broken and unworthy and causes families to abandon their own children. Our stories matter. Our stories need to be known and remembered. Our stories have the power to change hearts and lead to change.
Lot's wife became a memorial to the destruction of two cities and we need to witness and bear record of the suffering and marginalization of queer people

About the Disney College Program (DCP)
Unless you're a Disney super fan or a Florida resident looking for an interesting job, I doubt you've even heard about the Disney College Program. At least, I know that I hadn't, but ever since I began my program in early June, I've made it my mission to find answers to the questions that so many people are asking. Here are 5 of the most common questions about the DCP with answers.
What is the program?
The Disney College Program is a paid internship in which current university/college students or recent graduates can have the opportunity to work in the parks.
2. Do you have to do classes while in the program?
No, you do not have to be actively taking classes during your program. I would say that most participants choose to take the semester off of school in order to focus on their program. However, in order to apply, you must be actively enrolled and taking classes at an accredited institution, OR you must have graduated within the last 24 months of the application date.
3. Can I choose what job (usually referred to as your 'role') I end up getting?
The short answer is no, roles are assigned based on operational needs and usually have little to do with your resume or preferences. The long answer is that SOME work experience almost guarantees you certain roles. For example, if you applied with Starbucks experience, you will almost certainly be placed at a Starbucks location within the parks. Another thing to keep in mind is that the DCP's main purpose is to fill the undesirable roles within the parks. This means that roles such as Custodial, Quick Service Food & Beverage, Houseperson, and Merchandise are extremely common. Roles such as Character Performer, Character Actor, and Attractions are both very highly sought after and very rare for DCP participants to get.
4. Where would I live?
Both DCP participants and full time/part time cast members have the option to live at Flamingo Crossing Village, an apartment complex near Walt Disney World. While the apartments themselves are not owned by nor operated by Disney, they are very well maintained, and feature both single and double rooms, new appliances, complimentary furniture, a pool, a community center, and a nearby plaza with retail and dining options. If you're interested in seeing an apartment tour, feel free to check out my apartment tour which is posted to my TikTok and my Instagram.
5. Do you get to get in to the parks for free?
Yes! Once you have completed your first round of training you will receive your self admissions pass, which allows you to enter any of the parks as many times as you want for free! Not only can you enter yourself, you also receive Chip and Dale passes, which allow you to bring friends and family into the park with you. You don't get unlimited Chip and Dale passes however, so be mindful of how and when you choose to use these passes.
Thank you for reading my post! Feel free to submit any other questions you may have about the program, working at Disney, or questions about my life in general. Also, leave a comment if you'd like to hear more about the DCP interview process.

With the rise of anti trans bills taking away my rights I am now looking for roomate applications.
MUST live in a state where there are little to no bans on trans healthcare ( Oregan, Washington, Vermont, ect ) will accept back up states but bans cannot be as bad as Florida.
I am in the process of obtaining disability, my food stamps pay for 280$ in groceries, my dad covers my medical and gas bills.
I cannot work and am very obviously autistic. It effects my speech. May wanna read up on more serious forms of autism before thinking about letting me in.
I'm only testing the waters right now, but I am very close to having my rights to my HRT stripped away. So this is me asking for help from the kindness of anyone's hearts just in case shit goes south here. Which it's starting to.
Hmu if you're interested. I'll be going back to my regular posting now.

Quick Takes: Recent Romance Reads
It's that time of year again! The 5th annual Bookstore Romance Day is almost upon us. Saturday, August 19th will be full of great romances and equally great giveaways and deals, both from us and from our audiobook partners at Libro.fm. You can sign up for free virtual panels featuring a variety of topics and amazing romance authors, or stop by the store for fun displays of romances of all sorts. In case you want to get a head start on some great recommendations, a few of our staff have highlighted favorite recent romance reads below!
Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams
Recommended by Lori
Florist Annie Walker is the youngest, sweetest sister of four. Orphaned at an early age, Annie's grown up under the protective wing of her older brother and two older sisters, not to mention the close-knit (and nosy) population of Rome, Kentucky. But now Annie would really like to find "the one," settle down, and have a family. That would fill the emptiness that nothing else seems to satisfy, right? Except Annie's social anxiety makes dating a nightmare, and when her most recent date fakes an emergency to ditch her, Annie is ready to give it all up. Enter tattooed bodyguard Will Griffin, back in town to guard Annie's future sister-in-law, pop star Amelia. Will agrees to be Annie's dating coach, just to give her tips and practice with the things that seem so hard when she's in the middle of a date. Unsurprisingly, the more time Annie and Will spend together, the closer they become, and the more Annie wonders what she's going to do when Will's assignment with Amelia is over. Annie is so delightful as a character, trying to break out of the box her siblings, and everyone in the town have put her in -- and with Will she is able to explore aspects of her personality that she hasn't shown anyone else. Will, of course, has his own past to contend with, and his own hangups to overcome. I listened to the audiobook on this one, and the dual narration really brought the novel to life. As I say in my rec card, "the most adorable small-town romance."
With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson
Recommended by Lillian
Even though I think there is too much talk about tropes these days, it does work as a quick way to sum up a story. With Love, From Cold World seems like it would be easy to categorize. It's an Enemies to Lovers, workplace romance. The author ticks a few classic Rom-Com boxes - stuck in the office overnight together, beach trip sunscreen application, the setting is an almost too-quirky Winter-themed amusement park in Florida called Cold World. But hold on - there's more going on here that just that. Every layer starting with something as simple as the cover and continuing on to the emotions of the main characters is handled with a little more thought and a little less cookie-cutter storytelling. Lauren is a buttoned-up accountant, but getting her to open up and take risks for friendship and love didn't feel simple. Asa is a career Cold World employee who is not living up to his potential, but actually maybe he's doing great right where he is. There were moments I laughed, got choked up, and—of course—swooned. I found their getting together to be surprisingly touching. Definitely recommend for the romance reader as well as the romance-curious.
Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee
Recommended by Becca
All Dylan Tang wants is to help keep his aunt's struggling Chinese takeout, Wok Warriors, afloat. He has a plan, too. Win the Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake competition—using his grandmother's unique blue mooncake recipe—and get Wok Warriors featured on a popular food television show. There are only two problems: 1) his aunt doesn't have the recipe, and 2) Theo Somers. After Dylan has an unfortunate run-in with Theo's best friend, Theo (wealthy, charming, and very attractive) tries to make it up to him by making a rather large donation to the takeout. Unable to refuse the needed money but not wanting to owe any favors, Dylan agrees to be Theo's fake date to a family wedding. But a weekend in the Hamptons surrounded by rich-people problems and having to contend with his growing attraction to Theo as they get to know each other might be more than he bargained for. Will sabotage, scandal, and stress get in the way of their budding relationship, or will Dylan learn the secret ingredients for both mooncakes and romance? Short, sweet, and a quick read, Fake Dates and Mooncakes was everything I wanted. Delicious food descriptions and a fake dating plot where they don't mess around too long saying, "Oh, it started as fake but now I have feelings for him and I can't act on them because we had an agreement!" (my least favorite part of the trope), took it over the top. Also, the cover art! I'm in love.
Long story short, next Saturday should be a lot of fun. Good vibes, good people, and good books. Come stop by and celebrate love and people who love love!

"I already have the next couple books lined up, but after that...
The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
It was a deadly mistake. Joseph Malik, editor of a radical magazine, had snooped into rumors about an ancient secret society that was still alive and kicking. Now his offices have been bombed, he's missing, and the case has landed in the lap of a tough, cynical, streetwise New York detective. Saul Goodman knows he's stumbled onto something big—but even he can't guess how far into the pinnacles of power this conspiracy of evil has penetrated.
Slewfoot by Gerald Brom
Connecticut, 1666: An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector. The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil. To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help. Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan – one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.
Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too. Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures. As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly?
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to an isolated mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die…
Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive?
FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven
Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts?
Presented as a fact-finding investigation and a series of first-person interviews, FantasticLand pieces together the grisly series of events. Park policy was that the mostly college-aged employees surrender their electronic devices to preserve the authenticity of the FantasticLand experience. Cut off from the world and left on their own, the teenagers soon form rival tribes who viciously compete for food, medicine, social dominance, and even human flesh. This new social network divides the ravaged dreamland into territories ruled by the Pirates, the ShopGirls, the Freaks, and the Mole People. If meticulously curated online personas can replace private identities, what takes over when those constructs are lost?

Help trans Floridians affected by Hurricane Milton!
Check out how to donate in our linktree!
After getting feedback on most immediate needs for Hurricane Milton relief, we're setting this initial goal to help Florida trans folks through power & food loss, fueling, hygiene needs & more. We will be posting updates as we distribute funds.
Currently there is a need for $70 to cover travel & some pet food for individuals relocating to South Florida and staying with family until power is returned next week.
^ This goal has been met!! 🩷
There's also a need for $70 to help purchase food for another individual.
We also currently need to purchase some phone chargers & flashlights / batteries to distribute (probably around $200 as a rough estimate). Then there's otherwise general food & hygiene needs, which would bring up the rest of the total. We will obviously probably go beyond $500 in needs, but this was just to get something going for now. We will continue to update as things progress.
Most of this is within the Tampa or St. Pete area as well, so if you're able to donate items or further assist in any way, please DM!
Any larger individual needs, please continue to use our crowdfund application (link in bio) & we will post on your behalf as usual.

i was looking for a website that would make a simpsons chalkboard gag for me so i wouldn't have to open photoshop (or comparable free application) and instead i found a list of chalkboard gags from the show
only they were formatted in such a way that they looked like a poem
thus i present to you a found poem i call Standards:
I will not carve gods. I will not spank others. I will not aim for the head. I will not barf unless I'm sick. I will not expose the ignorance of the faculty.
I saw nothing unusual in the teacher's lounge. I will not conduct my own fire drills. Funny noises are not funny. I will not snap bras. I will not fake seizures.
This punishment is not boring and pointless. My name is not Dr. Death. I will not defame New Orleans. I will not prescribe medication. I will not bury the new kid.
I will not teach others to fly. I will not bring sheep to class. A burp is not an answer. Teacher is not a leper. Coffee is not for kids.
I will not eat things for money. I will not yell "She's Dead" at roll call. The principal's toupee is not a Frisbee. I will not call the principal "spud head". Goldfish don't bounce.
Mud is not one of the 4 food groups. No one is interested in my underpants. I will not sell miracle cures. I will return the seeing-eye dog. I do not have diplomatic immunity.
I will not charge admission to the bathroom. I will never win an Emmy. The cafeteria deep fryer is not a toy. All work and no play makes Bart a dull boy. I will not say "Springfield" just to get applause.
I am not authorized to fire substitute teachers. My homework was not stolen by a one-armed man. I will not go near the kindergarten turtle. I am not deliciously saucy. Organ transplants are best left to professionals.
The Pledge of Allegiance does not end with "Hail Satan". I will not celebrate meaningless milestones. There are plenty of businesses like show business. I will not re-transmit without the express permission of Major League Baseball. Five days is not too long to wait for a gun.
I will not waste chalk. I will not skateboard in the halls. I will not instigate revolution. I will not draw naked ladies in class. I did not see Elvis.
I will not call my teacher "Hot Cakes". Garlic gum is not funny. They are laughing at me, not with me. I will not yell "Fire" in a crowded classroom. I will not encourage others to fly.
I will not fake my way through life. Tar is not a plaything. I will not Xerox my butt. It's potato, not potatoe. I will not trade pants with others.
I am not a 32 year old woman. I will not do that thing with my tongue. I will not drive the principal's car. I will not pledge allegiance to Bart. I will not sell school property.
I will not burp in class. I will not cut corners. I will not get very far with this attitude. I will not belch the National Anthem. I will not sell land in Florida.
I will not grease the monkey bars. I will not hide behind the Fifth Amendment. I will not do anything bad ever again. I will not show off. I will not sleep through my education.
I am not a dentist. Spitwads are not free speech. Nobody likes sunburn slappers. High explosives and school don't mix. I will not bribe Principal Skinner.
I will not squeak chalk. I will finish what I sta "Bart Bucks" are not legal tender. Underwear should be worn on the inside. The Christmas Pageant does not stink.
I will not torment the emotionally frail.

I'm seeing a lot of "what are arts grants" in the tags. I want to help!! I used to be the Grants Manager at an arts council and ran like 5 different grants programs. I am also a solo artist myself (illustration/visual arts).
Who gives grants?
Arts organizations, including arts councils, foundations, collectives, agencies, government departments (often parks and rec if not a separate arts dept), nonprofits, and associations have money to grant to artists!!! This usually requires an application (hopefully an easy one) and possibly a project proposal.
Who is eligible?
ALL art disciplines. Theater, dance, music, choral arts, visual arts, film, writing/poetry, culture/folk arts, etc. Some grants are general, some are specific to disciplines.
Some of these individual artist grants only fund project expenses. Others fund your salary without restrictions on what you use the money for.
If you're an artist who primarily displays your work online, emphasize your IMPACT on your audience. Some grants are hyper local and only open to people living or working in a specific region. You should not be barred from those grants just for having a predominantly online presence.
How to find grants:
Tbh, even I haven't totally figured this out despite working in this industry. Beyond googling, your local libraries may have access to databases where you can search for grants (mine does). If you're an individual artist (not part of a company, collective, or non profit), there are specific grants for you, but they may be more rare and harder to find.
Reach out to your local arts councils. Hopefully they are plugged in to the local grants scene and can steer you in a helpful direction. They might even have a newsletter or webpage specifically for artist opportunities.
You can also try searching on grant application websites. My former organization used Submittable as our application platform.
Why does America lack arts funding?
Fucking politics, man.
Unfortunately, op is right, there is a massive lack of arts funding here.
IMO, this is primarily because artists, regardless of discipline, are not seen as workers like people in other industries despite contributing billions to the economy. Artists are workers, obviously, and need funding for expenses for everything from specialized equipment (like dance studio flooring) to childcare, food, rent, etc. In a perfect world, we artists would all be earning a guaranteed, basic salary just because we make and share art and for no other reason. (Read about AFTA's survey of economic impact of the nonprofit arts sector->AEP6).
I used to work for a really cool arts council in a culturally diverse county in a major metropolitan area with over 1 million residents. All our grants money came from the county budget. Despite HUGE NEED AND DEMAND, we had less than $1 million to give out, and pretty much all of it went to nonprofit, community arts organizations. Individual artist grants were cut during the pandemic, and while I was there, I was working on proving that there was demand for salaries for working artists.
Meanwhile a neighboring county in another state with similar demographics had over $3 million to give out (more than my entire state, I think). And their state has tens of millions to regrant. Maybe more.
I grew up in Maryland which happens to be one of the better funded states. Here's an example of an artist grant (link).
Desantis just cut ALL OF Florida's state level arts and culture funding. The previously approved amount was only HALF of the demonstrated need requested by their arts commission. This is so tragic like, I can't even put it into words (read more: link).
Speaking from the perspective of a former grants manager in an underfunded state, all is not bleak. My county increased arts funding for nonprofits because of the pandemic.
Also, the grant making industry is trending towards very progressive practices and theories, including anti-racism and universal basic income. And I've spoken with grants managers from other orgs with so much funding my head was spinning.
Even if you can't find a single grant you're eligible for, you need to vote for politicians who will INCREASE arts and culture funding. Please vote, please. You can also communicate with your representatives and show up at budget hearings to show your support for arts funding and granting.
#dont dm about finding or applying for specific grants i cant help you im sorry#but i can answer general questions#ref#grants#grantmaking#artist grants#artists on tumblr#moral of the story is make sure Grant making organizations actually know you exist and that you want money#also tell your government I guess#and don't credit me with this idea but like maybe get together with a couple friends and form your own non-profit??#which will open your eligibility to more grants

Oh my god the public application is horrible. It’s like, training video bad, and you didn’t even get hired yet. They should pay me at least $5 for having to sit through that.
I should go in and talk to a manager tomorrow.
I gotta make some money to get home. And then….to get a home…fuckin bastard ex who I still love so much and it’s so frustrating…
But hopefully they don’t actually care about weed in their drug test cause, yeah, no fucking way ha
Also I’m thinking of trying to sell some baked goods?? Pies for thanksgiving and cookies for Christmas. I don’t really know how I will find people to sell them to however. I posted on Facebook marketplace and Nextdoor. And I’ll ask my family to spread the word I guess. If I could sell even like 10 cakes at $50 each that would be helpful…and there aren’t like actual food laws in Florida here so I don’t have to buy any permits or anything and my parents will probably help buy ingredients if not fully buy them for me…
If any of y’all are around Clearwater Florida, and you want the best pumpkin pie, cheesecake, or chocolate cake you have ever had for thanksgiving, hmu
The cookie trays for Christmas I haven’t decided on types yet, but all of my recipes slap for real…
#help me make some money if you can#if you live in Clearwater or know someone who does#that would be cool#I’m not sure how well I can actually work rn#my physical health is not good#I am quite weak#but a lot of my baking can be done sitting down#and legit I might just get premade crusts since the filling is what is special about it anyway#and that would save a lot of time#I can just get some extra dough to use for decorating

What are CBD Products?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring chemical in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the psychoactive ingredient present in marijuana, CBD does not induce a "high" and is generally regarded safe to consume. CBD products are made by extracting CBD from hemp plants, which have low levels of THC Products. These items are available in a variety of formats, including oils, tinctures, capsules, gummies, topicals, and more.
Types of CBD Products
There are various types of CBD products available, each with its unique advantages and applications. Here are some of the most popular categories:
CBD Oils and Tinctures
CBD oils and tinctures are some of the most common and versatile CBD products. They are typically made by infusing CBD extract into a carrier oil, such as coconut or hemp seed oil. Users can consume CBD oils and tinctures sublingually (under the tongue), mix them into food or drinks, or apply them topically.
CBD Capsules and Softgels
For those who prefer a more convenient and discreet method of consumption, CBD capsules and softgels are an excellent option. They contain pre-measured amounts of CBD, making it easy to monitor and adjust your dosage. Capsules and softgels are typically taken orally and can be incorporated into your daily supplement routine.
CBD Gummies and Edibles
CBD gummies and edibles are a tasty and fun way to consume CBD. They come in various flavors and shapes, making them an attractive option for both new and experienced users. Gummies and edibles offer a slower release of CBD as they are digested, which may provide longer-lasting effects compared to other methods.
