This is Flora Klein and her son Gene Simmons. Born in Hungary in 1925, Flora was just 14 years old when she and her family were sent to Nazi concentration camps. She and her brother, Larry, were the only ones to survive. In 1946, Flora married Jechiel Witz and the two moved to Israel and started a family. In August 1949, she gave birth to Gene Simmons, (b. Chaim Witz) in Haifa. By 1958, Flora had divorced Jechiel and moved with Gene to Queens, New York. Simmons has always been close with his mother; she always supported her son on his path to success as frontman for KISS, the rock band he co-founded in the early 1970’s. Flora passed away in December 2018 at the age of 93.
"My mother told me why she had survived. When she was a 12-year-old girl, she came to a hairdresser and learned how to cut hair. The SS commander's wife needed someone to do her hair. She asked several girls: 'Do you speak German?' The girls raised their hands and said 'Yes'. Whoever raised their hand was sent to the gas chamber. My mother spoke a little German, but she didn't say so. That was the reason for why she was chosen. When she was doing the hair, the commander's wife thought she wouldn't understand anything. But she did."

Stellantis wants to make scabbing woke
Tumblr media
I'm coming to Minneapolis! Oct 15: Presenting The Internet Con at Moon Palace Books. Oct 16: Keynoting the 26th ACM Conference On Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing.
Tumblr media
I know, I know, it's weird when the worst people you know are right, even when they're right for the wrong reasons: like, the "Intelligence Community" is genuinely terrible, pharma companies are murderous crooks, and Big Tech really does have a dangerous grip on public debate. The swivel-eyed loons have a point, is what I'm saying:
https://locusmag.com/2023/05/commentary-cory-doctorow-the-swivel-eyed-loons-have-a-point/
When conspiratorialists and reactionaries holler about how the FBI are dirty-tricking creeps who are framing Trump, it's tempting to say, "well, if Trumpists hate the FBI, then I will love the FBI. Who cares about COINTELPRO and what they did to Martin Luther King?"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI%E2%80%93King_suicide_letter
It's a process called "schizmogenesis": forming new group identity beliefs based on saying the opposite of what your enemies say, and as tempting as that is, it's extraordinarily foolish and dangerous:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/12/18/schizmogenesis/
It means that canny reactionaries like Steve Bannon can trick you into taking any position merely by taking the opposite one. Bannon's followers are even more easily led, so it's easy for him to convince them that we have always been at war with Oceania. The right has created an entire mirror world of "I know you are but what am I?" politics.
Anti-vax co-opts "bodily autonomy." Climate denial becomes environmentalism ("wind turbines kill birds"). Transphobia becomes feminism ("keep women-only spaces for real women"). Support for strongmen becomes anti-imperialism ("don't feed the war machine in Ukraine"). These are the doppelgangers Naomi Klein warns us against:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not-that-naomi/#if-the-naomi-be-klein-youre-doing-just-fine
The far right has even managed to co-opt anti-corporate rhetoric. Culture warriors rail against "woke capitalism," insisting that when big businesses take socially progressive positions, it's just empty "virtue signalling." And you know what? They've got a point. Partially.
As with all mirror-world politics, the anti-woke-capitalism shuck is designed to convince low-information right-wing pismires into buying "anti-woke pillows" and demanding the right to pay junk fees to "own the libs":
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/04/owning-the-libs/#swiper-no-swiping
But woke capitalism is bullshit. Corporations – profit-maximizing immortal transhuman colony organisms that view workers and customers as inconvenient gut-flora – do not care about social justice. They don't care about anything, except for minimizing compensation for workers while maximizing the risk those workers bear; and locking in and gouging customers for products that are as low-quality as can be profitably sold.
Take DEI, a favored target of the right. It's undoubtably true that diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives have made some inroads on correcting bias in hiring decisions, with the result that companies get better employees who would have been excluded without this explicit corrective.
However, corporations don't value DEI because they abhor their history of hiring bias. Instead, DEI is how corporate management demonstrates to workers that their grievances are best addressed by trusting corporate leadership to correct their error of their ways – and not by forming a union.
Before the passage of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935, corporations would create fake "Company Unions" whose leadership were beholden to the company executives. These were decoy unions: they looked and sounded like unions, but when they negotiated with management, they were actually working for the bosses, not the workers.
This is more mirror-world tactics. They're the labor equivalent of the "crisis pregnancy centers" that masquerade as abortion clinics in order to fool pregnant people and trap them with endless delays until it's too late to terminate their pregnancies. Company unions get workers to trust in negotiators who are secretly working for the bosses, who emerge from the bargaining table with one-sided, abusive contracts and insist that this is the best deal workers can hope for.
Company unions were outlawed 90 years ago, and for decades, labor had a seat at the table, with wages tracking productivity gains and workers getting protection for discrimination, unsafe labor conditions, and wage-theft. Then came the neoliberal turn, and 40 years of wage stagnation, increased inequality, and corporate rule.
Anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop. Finally, finally, we have reached a turning point in labor, with public approval for unions at levels not seen since the Carter administration and thousands of strikes and protests breaking out across the country:
https://striketracker.ilr.cornell.edu/
It's not just the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA, either. For the first time in history, the UAW is striking against all the major automakers, and they are winning:
https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/10/striking-uaw-workers-win-key-battery-plant-concession-from-general-motors/
The automakers are getting desperate. Stellantis – Chrysler's latest alias, reflecting the company's absorbtion into corporate-human-centipede of global carmakers – has mobilized its DEI programs, trying to get marginalized people to believe that scabbing is a liberatory activity:
https://theintercept.com/2023/10/10/uaw-auto-strike-stellantis/
Stellantis calls each of its DEI silos a "Business Resource Group" (BRG): there's a "Working Parents Network," an "African Ancestry Network," "Asians Connected Together," a "DiverseAbilities Network," a "Gay & Lesbian Alliance" and more:
https://blog.stellantisnorthamerica.com/2021/07/20/business-resource-groups-drive-inclusion-and-diversity/
The corporate managers who lead these BRGs have established a scab rotation for each subgroup, calling on members to cross a UAW picket-line at a Michigan Parts Distribution Center run by Stellantis subsidiary Mopar:
Each BRG will pick a specific day of the week/weekend to volunteer as a team. Help continue to be the RESOURCE the BUSINESS can count on! Stellantis needs your help in running the Parts Distribution Centers (PDC) to ensure a steady supply of parts to our customers while negotiations continue. Working Parents Network has identified Friday, October 13 as WPN’s BRG Day at the PDCs!"
Now, these BRGs weren't invented by marginalized workers facing discrimination in the workplace. They come from literal union-busting playbooks produced by giant "union avoidance" firms that charge bosses millions for advice on skirting – or breaking – the law to keep workplace democracy at bay. All the biggest anti-union consultancies love BRGs, from Littler Mendelson to Jackson Lewis. IRI Strategies touts BRGs as a way to "union-proof" a business by absorbing workers' grievances in a decoy committee that will let them feel listened to.
BRGs, in other words, are the Crisis Pregnancy Centers of workplace discrimination. They're a Big Store Con, a company union dressed up as corporate social responsibility.
Now, let's not pretend that unions have a sterling record on race and gender issues. Giant labor organizations like the AFL had to be dragged into racial integration, and trade unions have sometimes been on the wrong side of anti-immigration panics:
https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1997/summer/american-labor-movement.html
But unions have also been the most reliable way for people of color and women to win better workplace treatment. The struggle for racial and gender justice was fought through labor organizing. Remember that MLK's "I've Been To the Mountaintop" speech was given in support of striking sanitation workers in Memphis:
https://www.afscme.org/about/history/mlk/mountaintop
Black organizers have always been militant labor organizers. Labor Day commemorates the victory of the long, hard-fought Pullman strike, where Black workers brought one of the most powerful companies in America to its knees:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pullman_Strike
And women have always fought for gender justice through the labor movement: the New York shirtwaist strike is the Ur-example, when women-led unions fought thugs and scabs on icy New York streets:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_shirtwaist_strike_of_1909
It's no surprise that labor activism, anti-racism and feminism go together. Since the earliest days, the labor justice struggle was also a social justice struggle. To learn more check out Kim Kelly's Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor:
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Fight-Like-Hell/Kim-Kelly/9781982171063
The most exploited, underpaid, and abused workers in America are also the most marginalized (duh).

To baristas:
https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/29/business/starbucks-union-wages/index.html
To fast-food workers:
https://www.ufcw.org/about/
The vanguard of today's labor surge is Black, brown, female and queer. Without a union, workers who face discrimination are on their own, hoping that their bosses will voluntarily do something about it. Black workers in Tesla's rabidly anti-union shops face vicious racism, from slurs to threats to violence. Without a union, they have to rely on the shifting whims of an Apartheid emerald mine space-Karen for relief, or hope for help from the NLRB or a class-action lawyer:
https://apnews.com/article/tesla-racism-black-lawsuit-class-action-21c88bddf60eca702560be58429495de
The far right isn't wrong when they holler that woke capitalism is bullshit. As with so many of their mirror-world causes, they've got a point, but only a limited one. The problem with woke capitalism is that it's no substitute for a union. The problem with relying on Business Resource Groups to fight racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia is that these struggles are all class struggles, and a BRG is never going to fight against the company that created it.
To understand how bankrupt woke capitalism is, conside this: Stellantis is calling on its "Working Parents Network" to scab this Friday. Stellantis is also being sanctioned by the Department Of Labor for discriminating against nursing mothers – the same "working parents" that the BRG is meant to protect:
https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2023/02/08/investigation-finds-stellantis-violated-rights-of-nursing-mothers-at-sterling-heights-plant/
Woke capitalism is just another kind of "predatory inclusion," like Intuit's campaign defending its "Free File" tax-prep scam, where they're claiming that ending this ripoff is racist because it denies Black families the right to be tricked into paying for something they are entitled to get for free:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/27/predatory-inclusion/#equal-opportunity-scammers
When I learned about Intuit's wokewashing, I thought I'd found woke capitalism's rock bottom, but I was wrong. Stellantis's call for woke scabbing is a new low.

oh my god i love your art so much! what are some of your biggest inspirations?
Hi! Thank you so much :D It makes me so soooo happy to hear that!
I have a few inspirations for different things. In regards to backgrounds, my 3 big ones are all artists who worked on Hanna-Barbera cartoons (examples shown below, respectively in each row): Bob Gentle, Art Lozzi, and Monte (Fernando Montealegre)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also really like Samurai Jack backgrounds, I am unsure of who all the artists that worked on the show art, but I can identify Scott Wills' works (he has a site btw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the bg art style of My Life as a Teenage Robot (I don't know who the artists are for these though)
Tumblr media
Character designs, I am heavily inspired by various character designs of Stephen Silver (mainly Clerks & Kim Possible)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also My Life as a Teenage Robot, Clone High, Total Drama, Dexter's Lab, & Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy are some big ones for character design inspiration as well. (Also Hanna-Barbera designs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My biggest inspiration in regards to my art as a whole and my principle on making art is pretty much just mid-century art (approx. 40s - 70s), which if you google, there is no single main style. There's similar style trends (simple, abstract, geometric shapes) but every artist is just experimenting with different tools and techniques which makes it really fun for me, with not having to worry about having a "consistent style" or whatever. Animation wise, I also like UPA's style but my pet peeve is everyone grouping mid-century styles as "UPA". School House Rock is another good one. Also various Soviet cartoons too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like the works of mid century illustrators/graphic designers: Bernice Myers, Aurelius Battaglia, Jim Flora, Mary Blair, and Lou Peters among others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also love the works of Saul Bass, Alvin Lustig, and Paul Rand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also these 2 illustrations in particular that I'm a huge fan of but am unsure who made it (unfortunately a lot of graphic artists during this time are uncredited or I can hardly find anything about them/other examples of their works):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also like travel posters (David Klein in particular) and National Park posters made by the WPA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks for asking! I always love to share my inspirations.

Haunted Dreams (Licht Klein x MC)
Happy 3ish days after Valentines! Lay witness, friends, to my piece for @ikemenlibrary's Valentines exchange. I was assigned to @midwinterrmemento for some sweet sweet angst. Type of angst was never specified, so I went for the classic bad dream scenario. Also romance is my weakest genre but god did I try my best okay bye
Tumblr media
There’s something to be said about springtime in Rhodolite. In a country famed for its roses, it’s easy to overlook the blossoming flora that surrounds the outer edges of the kingdom. Perhaps it’s not quite the sprawling, expansive ecosystems found in Jade, but there’s a certain charm in the soft chirping of birds and gentle breeze that blows through the trees and rustles through Emma’s hair, and makes one feel as though they’ve stepped right through the pages of a storybook.
Emma finds herself flitting off into her own daydreams as she and Licht stroll hand-in-hand through the forest path. She indulges herself in thoughts of fairytales and princely romances as they continue along the trail, just as she did as a child. How odd to think that she’s found herself a prince of her own. One who’s endlessly kind and selfless, and does nothing but smile softly at her whilst she rambles on about her silly romance novels, wordlessly readjusting the hood of her cloak when the deep red fabric of her hood threatens to fall. In her free hand, she carries a basket brimming with wild flowers. They must have been collecting them along the trail, though Emma finds that she’s unable to recall exactly when they had stopped to pick them up. It gnaws at her, being unable to remember, but quickly she dismisses it. It’s rude to let her mind wander off in such a manner whilst in the company of her lover.
The stem of a flower tucks itself behind her ear, startling her from her thoughts. Licht stands in front of her, face expressionless aside from the fond, inquisitive look in his eyes. She must not have wiped the brief dismay from her face quickly enough.
“Are you alright?” Licht’s voice is smooth, tinged with such a soft concern that Emma has to fight back a blush.
“Hm,” she hums and tilts her head with a small smile. “I’m fine, just lost in my head. Maybe we should go back to the palace now? It’s getting a little cold out here for me with the breeze.” Emma makes a show of pulling her red cloak tighter around her body and hopes it’s enough to brush off the question. It’s a weak attempt, but it seems to have worked well enough. Licht untangles their hands to wrap an arm around her, pulling her closer into his side and takes the basket of flowers from her with his free hand.
“Of course.” His arm tightens around her in a protective manner. “I’ll draw you a bath, too. So you won’t get sick.” Emma lets out a small laugh, tucking her head into his shoulder with a grin. Who’d have known that the emotionless, solemn prince of wolves would have such a wide protective streak. She’ll have to find a way to repay his kindness someday, but it seems as though her debt will keep growing by the hour.
The trek back seems to take much longer than the time it had taken them to get there. The trail twists with curves and turns that have Emma scrunching her eyebrows as she tries to recall coming across them before. Licht seems unaware of her growing unease, continuing down the path in front of him with an air of steadfast confidence; and it’s a comfort to know that her lover isn’t put off by the changing scenery.
There’s a markedly different feeling to the woods then there had been earlier. The sun has hidden away behind a wall of thick gray, and a light layer of fog now clings to their feet and shrouds the trees around them in an ominous cloud. Neither of them speak as they wade through the fog, and it’s now that Emma has a realization.
It’s quiet. Not a single sound is coming from their surroundings; there are no birds chirping, or trees rustling from squirrels. Apart from the crunch of dirt and rocks under their feet, the forest has fallen utterly silent. Emma’s earlier unease is slowly settling into a deep fear as the path continues to twist in an unknown direction. She grips onto Licht’s arm like a vice. She wants to say something, ask him what’s going on, why he seems so unshaken by their surroundings, but the words die on her tongue just as soon as her lips part to speak. A growl rips through the silence, low and menacing.
A wolf parts through the fog, head dropped low and teeth bared in a snarl. It’s large. Bigger than any wolf Emma has seen, or even read about. She takes a stumbling step backwards, keeping Licht’s arm clutched close to her chest in fear. Licht’s free hand immediately falls to the hilt of his sword, and gently, he pushes Emma behind him to shield her. It feels as though time has slowed around them. The fog has grown thicker, blurring out the treeline almost entirely. It feels as though they’ve been backed into a corner by a monster rather than a simple animal.
It prowls closer, one slow, deliberate step after the other, until there’s only an arm’s length of space between Licht and the wolf. His sword is drawn and at the ready, waiting for the attack. There are tears pooling in the corners of Emma’s eyes as she watches the beast rear down on its haunches.
It’s a startlingly quick procession. The wolf lunges forward with teeth bared, and Licht wrenches his arm free from Emma’s hold to shield her completely with his own body, sword raised to defend them both. She thinks he yells for her to run, but the words don’t quite register. Emma stands stock-still in the middle of the warped forest trail, tears now streaming down her cheeks in waves. It’s not long before the sword has been knocked out of Licht’s hands and the wolf is on him in seconds. It’s jaws open wide, wider than should even be possible, before it descends upon Licht with killing intent. And Emma screams. She shrieks a piercing scream, and keeps screaming until the fog is closing in around her with crushing weight, as though it wants to bury her. It wraps around her chest tightly, and Emma lets out one final guttural sob before the fog overtakes her entirely.
Until it hasn’t. She’s still crying as reality reshapes around her, sobbing loudly for her lost lover as warm callused hands gently shake at her shoulders. “It’s just a dream,” a familiar voice whispers into her ear. It’s soft and filled with hesitant concern, and Emma clings to the sweet nothings as they slice through the terrible images in her mind with a striking ease, “You’re okay. It’s just a dream. I’m here.”
When her eyes finally open, it’s not to the sight of blood, or fog, or a ravenous beast coming to finish her off. It’s Licht, reliable, steadfast Licht, staring down at her with wide eyes and a pinched expression. His hands lay gently on her shoulders, fingers twitching to hold tighter, pull her closer, but he doesn’t. He stays hovering, keeps his gaze glued to her form as if one glance in another direction would send her back into whatever horrible dream she woke from.
“Are you…okay?” There’s an uncertainty to the tone of Licht’s voice, a fear, and it squeezes Emma’s heart to know that she had been the one to cause it. Her scream must have startled Licht from his own dreams.
“I’m okay now. Please. I’ll tell you about it in the morning, just,” she hesitates, not wanting to worry her love any further than she already had. “Just hold me, please.”
The hands on her shoulder move as soon as the request has been made, quickly swapping the two of them into a more comfortable position. Emma’s head is tucked neatly into the side of Licht’s neck, where each breath she takes is accompanied by the scent of his cologne. His arms wrap around her waist, providing a soothing weight. It’s… blissful.
All of the lingering fear has melted away into the background as Emma’s breath evens out with slumber for a second time. This time, there’s no sign of changing paths or ominous feelings as she sleeps. Only the faintest hint of cologne and a reassuring warmth wrapping her up in a blanket of safety.

Flora!

Note
my biggest fear is that the writer was pushed by the agency to finish it quickly. like nooooooo please T.T
It’s an understandable fear, my dear. Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but I haven’t seriously considered a scenario where the ending wasn’t planned (yet).
Although I’m not much informed about Korean agencies specifically, in general, when writers work for an editorial there’s a lot of team planning prior to launch. What I mean to imply is that Naver was probably aware of MOTH’s extension long before they decided to promote it (keep in mind that they also agreed to serialized it on a webtoon format). Sure, they could’ve realized later that MOTH wasn’t engaging as much readers as the author’s previous work and, therefore, they could’ve tried to give it an end as fast as they could. But, in that case, wouldn’t they have tried to give readers a much more encompassing, likable and definitive ending? At least, the should’ve been able to fill the “likable” category.
With the current state of things, we’re still missing critical info even about MLs:
1. We don’t know Tasir’s baby name.
2. We never saw Guesta’s baby.
3. Klein is still a temporary consort.
4. We don’t know if Ranamun’s daughter (Flora) will die young.
5. We don’t know if Sonnaught’s daughter will ever become a vampire.
6. We don’t know what happened to Girgol’s son (Sell) after he was sealed.
7. We don’t know if knowing the truth about his real father will impact Carlein’s adopted son (Kailetta).
I could go on with other blanks related to the prophecy, the awakening, Latil’s ability to read minds, Raean and Anya’s relationship, the assassination of the King of Milo in Guesta’s hands, the Count Sywillen, and countless of other things that could’ve been easily solved or never mentioned if they wanted to rush the story towards an earlier end.
So, I keep my hopes up for an upcoming work that will follow the original story, but that will also be focused in something else besides the harem. A lot of comments complained about Latil’s poor time management when it came to her husbands, so if the author wants to explore other topics, it’s not a bad idea to go for a change of title and theme.
Let’s hope for the best 🙌
Gobi
