The Science Behind Slow Movement Exercise: Why it’s the Future of Fitness
In the world of fitness, innovation, and research are constantly shaping how we approach health and wellness. One of the most groundbreaking methods gaining traction today is the slow-movement exercise. This technique, exemplified by approaches like the Super Slow method, focuses on deliberate, controlled movements to maximize muscle engagement and minimize the risk of injury. As more people seek efficient and effective ways to stay fit, slow motion strength training exercise is emerging as the future of fitness. Let’s explore more about the science behind it, how it compares to traditional workouts, and its unique benefits.
What Is Slow Movement Exercise?
Slow movement exercise involves performing each repetition of a workout at a significantly reduced pace. Instead of quickly moving the wieghts, you focus on controlled, deliberate movements, often taking 10 seconds or more for both the lifting (concentric) and lowering (eccentric) phases of an exercise. This method emphasizes precision and proper form, ensuring that muscles are fully engaged throughout the movement.
Tumblr media
The approach is rooted in principles of time under tension (TUT)—a concept in exercise science that suggests the amount of time muscles are under strain influences strength and hypertrophy (muscle growth). By slowing down movements, you extend TUT, leading to more effective muscle activation. This slow movement & high-intensity strength training method yields more muscle in less time, and you can learn how it is effective here.
How It Compares to Traditional Workouts
Traditional workouts often involve faster-paced repetitions resulting in less intensity. These workouts prioritize speed or volume over form, increasing the risk of injury and putting unnecessary stress on joints.
In contrast, slow movement exercises:
Minimizes Momentum: Traditional workouts sometimes rely on momentum to complete reps, which can reduce muscle engagement. Slow movement eliminates this, ensuring muscles do the work.
Reduces Injury Risk: The controlled pace allows for better focus on form, significantly lowering the risk of strains, sprains, and other injuries.
Requires Less Equipment: Because the technique emphasizes controlled tension, you can achieve significant results with lighter weights or even bodyweight exercises.
Time Efficiency: While traditional workouts often require longer sessions to achieve similar results, slow exercise sessions can be shorter while delivering equal or greater benefits.
The Benefits of Slow Movement Exercise
Enhanced Muscle Activation When you perform slow, deliberate movements, muscles are continuously engaged throughout the entire range of motion. This leads to improved strength gains and muscle tone compared to faster, less controlled exercises.
Increased Safety Slow movement exercise prioritizes proper form, reducing the likelihood of injuries. It’s particularly beneficial for beginners, older adults, or individuals recovering from injuries who need a safer approach to fitness.
Improved Joint Health By eliminating jerky, high-impact motions, this method is gentler on joints. It’s ideal for people with arthritis or joint sensitivities who still want to maintain an active lifestyle.
Efficient Use of Time Slow movement exercises deliver maximum results in minimal time. A 20- to 30-minute session once a week can produce significant improvements in strength and endurance.
Boosted Metabolism Every pound of muscle burns 30-50 calories per day. The best way to stimulate the metabolism is to increase the amount of muscle tissue. The slow movement method focuses on bringing the muscles to fatigue, which efficiently increases muscle mass thereby promoting calorie burn and fat loss even after the workout is over.
Mental Focus and Mind-Body Connection Slowing down the exercise movement speed requires more concentration, helping you develop a stronger mind-body connection. This can also make workouts feel more meditative and stress-relieving.
Why It’s the Future of Fitness
As fitness trends evolve, people are looking for methods that balance efficiency, safety, and results. Slow movement exercise ticks all these boxes:
Time-Saving: In today’s fast-paced world, workouts that deliver results without hours in the gym are highly appealing.
Accessible for All Ages: Unlike fast repetition workouts, slow movement exercises cater to a broader audience, including seniors and those with physical limitations.
Backed by Science: Studies have shown that slow and controlled resistance training can produce equal or superior results compared to traditional methods, making it a scientifically validated approach.
Focus on Longevity: As more people emphasize long-term health over short-term gains, safe and sustainable methods like these are becoming a priority.
Conclusion
Slow movement exercise is more than just a fitness trend; it’s a science-backed approach to achieving maximum results with minimal risk. By focusing on controlled, deliberate movements, this method offers a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional workouts. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness Personal Training journey, slow movement exercise can help you achieve your goals while promoting overall health and wellness.
As the fitness industry continues to embrace innovation, this form of exercise is proving to be a game-changer—one that prioritizes quality over quantity and longevity over quick fixes. If you are living in Santa Rosa, and looking for a personal trainer, click here to book a free session.
Start living stronger today!

Umineko - question arcs playthrough -> ep 2 - 3
last part - All parts and episodes - next part
So this post was just sitting in my drafts and i completely forgot about it lol?? I assume i wanted to put some more photos but id argue it's enough, so here is part 3.
Maria has a little fit in the train, and Rosa hits her again, to the shock and horror of everyone else in the train. It really is sad to see this, both for Maria for obvious reasons, and for Rosa for seeing how much she fails at being a mother.
Tumblr media
child abuse. Lovely.
Tumblr media
it hurts me too, personally. This really is tragic, Ryukishi why must you hurt us like this. But this does really put in perspective why Maria is so obsessed with witches and magic.
Tumblr media
"Wdym i'm projecting my insecurities and issues on my child? it's the 9y olds fault that my husband doesn't love me!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rosa reminds me to an uncomfortable level of my mom, so I can't help but hope that perhaps in another life (cough cough some fanfiction) she got the help and therapy she needed and was able to be an actual good mom. Or perhaps she's just an actual horrible mother who hates her child and is just a horrible being in general and i am the one doing the projecting now. nooooo
Tumblr media
Yeah i was gonna say that i suspect that Maria thinks her mom is possessed by some evil spirit, and seems like that's true. Is that another reason why Rosa doesn't deny the witches stuff? Because she needs it as an excuse for her abuse?
Anyways Rosa offers to buy Maria some sweets and they go to a supermarket. In the meantime we are showed some discussions in Krauss' family
Tumblr media
Me after the 7th billion test where i cross out the right answer moments before the end of the test because i don't trust myself.
Tumblr media
O? So does that mean that they won't let his siblings to talk to Kinzo?
Tumblr media
Is this refering to Beatrice or could it refer to Battler? Idk it would make no sense to be Battler but i just have a feeling it might refer to him. Who knows
Tumblr media
#relathionshipgoals
Tumblr media
woah woah what's this? feat my achievment
Tumblr media
huuuuuuhh??? why is she playing a game with HIM?? Where does this happen? In that purgatory place??
Tumblr media
Ok so yeah prolly in that purgatory. Also idk why it took me so long but I'm starting to believe that "believe in you" isn't as literal as I've been taking it, and is actually more philosophical.
Tumblr media
Battler pulled the danganronpa/ace attorney pose before it was cool.
Tumblr media
why do all of these people act like 9 is the peak of maturity?? Bitch i still believed in santa claus at 9?? I thought i was some cat hybrid, who will be welcomed back by the shadow clan at 9. And like that was before i discovered twilight and thought i was a vampire. My cousin believed he's some shadow magic welder at 12. 9 is not that much y'all.

La Squadra's favourite italian festivals and why~
Risotto ✂️: " Macchina di Santa Rosa"
Risotto really got into this tradition after he visited Formaggio in his home region, Lazio. They went to Viterbo, a city not really far from Rome, and during their staying they were challenged by a couple of Chads to join the festivity from beginning to the end. And so the two of them got caught up into a 1 km run with other buff dudes, carrying a 5.100 kg overly sparkly and decorated pillar ( 30 mt of height ) yelling " Evviva Santa Rosa " ( Hurray for Santa Rosa). Formaggio hated every second of it and swore to never go to Viterbo again...Risotto after 5 years is still the favourite " Facchino " ( handyman) of the town, because of his dedication to the Saint's statue and the history of this tradition (it started in 1258 and is still very relevant )....also he likes to show off his ridiculous strenght.
Prosciutto 🍖: " Festa di Sant'Agata "
Prosciutto's family was a very strict, traditionalist, hypocritical, catholic family....so the classic italian standards. When he was little he hated going to mass with his parents cause being a child born in the mafia, found disgusting how his father prayed God for His forgiveness and then killed an entire family just cause they witnessed a drug trade in his territory. But he loved Sant'Agata's night, he truly did: being so close to his Nonna Agata ( on his mother's side ) he was so happy to spend the weekends with her, away from the coldness of his mother and cruelty from his father and older siblings. The two of them would walk through the streets of Catania, looking at the beautiful lights hanged in the streets of the town, it looked so magical...And his beloved nonna would spoil him by getting him the traditional dessert " cassateddi do sant'aita " little cassata that looks like tiny breasts, to remind what the legend said about the type of torture the young saint endured before her martyr ( roman soldiers tore off her breasts to torture her, cause she was a christian ) His nonna told him to enjoy those desserts cause they were made with love and devotion, like Saint Agata loved God and her faith...young Prosciutto turned that deep thought into " Yeah i'm a tits guy "...Ok jokes aside, he still is fond about those memories with his granny.
Formaggio 🧀: " Sagra del Padellone "
who loves food? This cheese man here!! He endures every year all italian public train transportation's bullshit just to go to Camogli ( Liguria ) to witness the magnificent vision of the "Padellone": a gigant frying pan of 8 mt where over 3 tons of fresh fish gets fried up and served to all the peoe gathered around to enjoy this traditional festivity. Maggio loves good food and parties, so of course he had to check out this event! He'll take a couple of days to himself to chill, eat and maybe hook up with a cute turist before disappearing to watch the fireworks on the pier, beer in his hand and forgetting about the mafia life for a moment.
Illuso 🔎: " Carnevale di Venezia "
Fancy costumes? Incognito mode? Neverending gossips? This is Illuso's territory, he loves the Carnevale even more than Ghiaccio, who is more accostumed to this event. He will dress up so fancy in those elaborated costumes and roam around the city to take pictures with turists ( steal some wallets too), spy on people he finds interesting and then cheer like a maniac during the " volo dell'angelo" where a mechanic bird that looks like a dove, flies across Piazza San Marco to shoot confettis all over the people partying underneath it. For someone who likes staying in the shadows like Illuso, this is truly his jam!
Ghiaccio 🧊: " Trento-Bondone "
Ghiaccio is the type of person who hates everyone and everything that doesn't fit in his very analytical and 0 bullshit mindset. But there's one event that mixes perfectly his love for cars and the chance to just unwind and be himself once a year: the oldest car race in Northen italy " Trento Bondone". He wakes up at dawn, jumps into his red Mazda and drives fast as he can to be between the first to set his tent nearby the street so he can see all the different vehicles that will run the race that year. All the festival itself, other than cars and motorbikes, is just loud music with tons of alcool and random bullshit happening here and there. In these moments, Ghiaccio truly feels like a normal 24 years old guy, having the time of his life headbanging to some Martin Garrix or Gigi D'agostino.
Melone 🍈: " Lucca Comix and Games "
He goes there for the sexy cosplayers...Ok not only for that, but it's a very good reason on why purple man loves this event. Melone is somewhat of a nerd but the fact that an entire community of people who loves all science fiction and fantasy, reunites to celebrate and enjoy all this is truly amazing. His brain at first would try to analyize all human interactions on why someone would cosplay as a villain, before reminding himself that in this case, it's all fiction; everyday he is the villain of the history. People would compliment his " costume " and ask for pictures, what inspired him, if he can hang out to talk about his " character"...and he does. He creates new scenarios, background stories, shenanigans every year, he reinvent himself every year to give the people that approach him what they want: a good storytelling and character building. But then he starts to have fun, to actually listen to other's stories, characters and ideas: he starts going to young artists to compliment their work, he gets trinkets for his team even if they never heard of that comic or anime, he joins random flash mobs around the town and for 4 days he lives in his own fantasy world, carefree...before he notices the cute girl cosplaying like Chun-Li by Tekken hitting another girl for having a better costume, time to make another Jr i guess~
Pesci 🐟: " Notte della Befana"
Call him basic all you want but this big boy LOVES celebrating la Befana ( there's no real translation to that, so let's just call her Old Hag, the festivity has greek origins tho! From the word ἐπιφάνια, epifáneia).
He loved it as a child when his mom would help him knit the big sock to put on his bedframe, so that La Befana could pour toys and sweets inside cause he had been a good kid all year! The mornings had the smell of chocolate, caramel and the paper who wrapped the little toy car he saw in the toy shop just two weeks before! Now as a mafioso he still gets the " Calza della Befana " from supermarkets to feed his inner child, but hides it from the team so that they won't bullg him more than usual...prosciutto lnows about it, but for once he can leave the newbie be, it's just sugar after all.

“The typical commando is a man with an above average to high IQ who is extremely fit. He is a man who on the surface seems hard, callous, and emotionally indifferent. In truth, he is an extremely emotional and compassionate person. He is often obsessed with winning. He hates to lose, but is rarely willing to cheat or lie to win. He holds himself to a very high standard of honor and integrity and despises people who lie and lack character. He would, without thought or hesitation, give his life to save the life of a fellow commando. His biggest fear is that he will have wasted his life by not pushing himself hard enough. He despises people who live their lives unjustly. He dislikes politicians and bureaucrats and displays an open animosity toward them. He is trained to kill in a lethal and efficient manner and, over time, comes to accept it as a just and reasonable way to solve a problem. If you can convince him that a person is bad enough, he will pull the trigger with a clear conscience. Of course, there are exceptions to this, but for the most part, this is the norm.” ~ Vince Flynn, from the book "Term Limits" • This picture was taken in 2017 before a night HAHO MFF (High Altitude High Opening Military Freefall) into the Santa Rosa Sound in Navarre, FL. Our DZ (Drop Zone) marker was a boat with a green light on It that was driving in circles, the winds were really high which made the flight under canopy feel like a life time...knowing you’re about to land in the cold dark ocean doesn’t make the ride down any more enjoyable. The perks of learning another way to get to work, I suppose. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSzRgXYLTWk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Recap of the tri-fecta
Over the weekend, I completed my third race in as many weeks. I started the trifecta with the Des Moines Escape Triathlon, an Olympic distance race in the new Escape series. From there, I came home for a few days, then drove with Gloria and my parents up to Santa Cruz for IM 70.3 Santa Cruz. Then home for the week before the Nautica Malibu Triathlon on Saturday, another Olympic distance race.
Training between each race was necessarily limited a bit, so it actually made for some easy weeks with extra time to spend with Gloria and friends. And now that I’m taking a full week off before a final push to Los Cabos 70.3 in November, I weirdly feel lazy. Triathlon is a strange sport and I’m a strange person.
Escape Des Moines
The trip to Des Moines started to go downhill when I locked myself into the Nursing Room at LAX at 5am to use my breast pump and realized I’d forgotten all the pump parts on the drying rack at home. I wasn’t scheduled to land in Des Moines until 2pm. Oh boy. The discomfort got pretty extreme, but luckily I had a sweatshirt to hide any unsightly leaks. On landing in Des Moines and meeting my Dad, who amazingly flew out to meet me and hang out, we drove directly to Target to purchase some pump parts to I could relieve myself on the parking lot.
That done, I could think and breath again, so we found our hotel downtown, and the trip continued the downhill slide. I was racing with my brand-new Liv Avow 0 bike, after about 3.5 hours of ride time. The mechanic at my shop, Giant Santa Monica, helped me pack it. But there were some surprises when I tried to assemble, just due to growing pains with a new bike, and my ineptitude. So we used FaceTime on and off for about 2 hours trying to troubleshoot. Once that stress was done, Dad and I then went to find some beer. Downtown Des Moines was surprisingly great and there were lots of places to drink local beer and get some good food.
The following day we went to the nearby race site and I took the fully functioning bike out for a little spin. And as a bonus, my wonderful friend from college Brooke was driving to NY from South Dakota and managed to meet us at this park in Des Moines to a quick visit with her and her daughter. The trip definitely took a sharp uphill swing at that point, and stayed up! The rest of the day was easy, as we went downtown again to the finish site to register and attend the pro meeting. I met Sarah Haskins, the other lactating mama on the start list, and was able to tell her how helpful her blog was to me throughout pregnancy and during the beginning of my comeback training. Dad and I found some more good food and beer and set the alarms for a somewhat early day.
Another great surprise was in store as my cousin Melissa, who just took a teaching job at nearby Iowa State, was able to meet us for race day! Who knew Des Moines would host two great reunions?! Race morning was chill, as the lake was an easy trip from downtown. I managed time well, getting in a good warmup jog and swim before the start.
The swim was in warm water on a chilly morning. No wetsuits! And with a field of good swimmers, I was soon alone looking at feet splashing in the distance. I came out of the water a disappointing 5 mins back from the lead pack of 4 who swam together. But, that did make the rest of the race pretty simple.
It was an individual time trial bike ride on my brand new Viserion the Ice Dragon to try and make up time. I ended up with the fastest bike time (but only by about 20 seconds over Sarah Haskins, Lauren Goss and Heather Lendway)
Then, a chase on foot to see how much time I could make up. It wasn’t enough to move up any places, and I had to be satisfied with 5th place, the final spot for some money.
But, looking at the results, I was happy with my bike time and the power I sustained. I was also happy with my run, the third fastest of the day, after a good effort on the bike. The swim was about what I figured it would be, as my elbow is still healing, and I’ve cut most of my swim workouts short. And also, those athletes are just better swimmers than me anyway!
After happy post-race musings with Dad and Melissa, we got ready to repack my bike (much easier than building it) and head to the airport. I was able to fit in three more local beers before boarding my flight home to Artie and Gloria. It was a great trip!
Santa Cruz 70.3
My parents arrived Wednesday so they were around to help out for my last couple pre-race shake-out workouts. We picked up a minivan Thursday afternoon and packed it up for an early Friday morning departure. We made it up to Santa Cruz in about 7.5 hours. Not bad with a baby! Thank goodness my Mom sat in the back to entertain G the whole way. Our arrival in Santa Cruz was not without drama, as our reservation for a large enough room for three adults and a baby was nowhere to be found. But after some cajoling, almost tears, and a 60 minute walk around the boardwalk, the room was located, cleaned and inhabited. Exhausted from the day, we opted to use the hotel kitchen to heat up some Trader Joe’s meals. The following day I got in a ride on the beginning of the bike course and a jog. I opted to stay out of the water because it’s cold, I’m lazy, and there was a vague warning about blooming red algae. Gloria cried through her nap time, so I put her in the baby carrier so she would fall asleep. While I kept up the constant bouncing and jiggling, she slept on me through registration and the pro meeting. After lunch Gloria and I met up on the beach with a friend who was there for his first ever triathlon. The rest of the day was a sleepy blur and we ended up eating some more fine Trader Joe’s meals for dinner.
Tumblr media
Race morning logistics were easy since my Mom found a hotel directly across the street from transition. I was able to use the breast pump in the hotel room before heading down, set up transition, and make it to the water in time for a swim warmup and final snacks. But then, fog rolled in, no one could see, and the start was delayed at least an hour. Kudos to the organizers for figuring out how to move forward with a swim. They condensed the course to 750 meters on one side of the pier and lined the course with paddlers. It was impossible to see beyond the paddler right in front of your face, but they had enough that we could navigate the course without too much difficulty. The shortened course helped my elbow a lot, and also got me out of the water before I got too cold. I was grateful for that as well.  The chilly water and air were causing me some terrible Santa Rosa flashbacks of shivering for 2 hours on the bike. I spent some extra time in transition putting on arm warmers and socks, so I was comfortable the entire bike ride with no shivering. Hurrah. I did feel gypped of the spectacular coastal views though!
Tumblr media
I moved into 8th position off the bike with a solid effort that I was happy with. Right before leaving for the race, Willie at Giant Santa Monica fiddled with my fit a tiny bit, and I was even more comfortable on Viserion. I went a little hard for the first hour, wanting to break free of the athletes I was nearby so I wouldn’t have to deal with jockeying for position with the narrow bike course and passing cars. Once I felt solidly in 8th place, I backed off the effort to a more sustainable one and cruised about a minute behind Ceclia in front of me for the rest of the course. It was fun having zero flats, just constant rollers out and back on PCH. It felt similar to riding on PCH outside of LA, except way less populated and way prettier.
Heading out of transition I heard the announcer say I was in 8th, but that most of the athletes ahead were fairly close together. With the shortened swim we all stayed together more, which made the race really fun. I knew I had a chance to run into a money position, so that was the goal. My legs were feeling good, so I just tried to hit a pace and settle in without surges. The steady pace was enough to get me into 6th place by mile 5, so then I just tried to keep my shit together. I’d lost some gels off the bike and managed to miss handoffs for more at aid stations. Then, I lost a gel running too somehow. I was afraid to take a new kind of gel, since I’ve had stomach troubles in the past doing that. I tried to make up for it with coke at aid stations, but still started feeling woozy and light headed around mile 8-9. It was a battle of wills from then on to not F up and lose my spot. I kept chugging coke and kept trying to keep the pace steady. Happily it worked out and I stumbled through the sandy finish happy with another payday and happy to see my baby and parents!
Tumblr media
We finally ate at a restaurant that wasn’t Trader Joe’s post-race and found some race local IPA. And cookies. Those were delicious cookies.
Nautica Malibu Olympic
Malibu is always on the race schedule, except last year when I was pregnant. I was excited to go back and try to regain my crown this year, even when I found out it would be my third race in three weeks. But at least Des Moines and Malibu were Olympics, so it worked out. I didn’t train that much in the week leading up to Malibu, and still woke up race morning feeling tired. But on a positive note, Artie and Gloria were both coming to the race! We got up there in plenty of time to park, get situated, get in a swim warm-up and be on the start line with a minute to spare. There were no nerves race morning, as I had spent the while morning chatting with friends. I absolutely love this race for that. The race started with pro women, men and a large wave of age group men, so the trip out to the first buoy was rough. After the right turn we all spread out and settled down. I came out of the water close to Madi and with a good swim time (for me), happy the my elbow hadn’t hurt at all.
Tumblr media
Vision felt great again, and I am starting to feel more and more comfortable on my new ride. My legs didn’t have much power, so I rode only a tiny bit above 70.3 watts for the course. That was ok by me, and enough to move me into 1st place with a decent time. I wanted to break 40 minutes on the run, so I didn’t want to overextend, just push hard enough to feel like I did some work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got to race with Coach Dusty cheering me on in person for the first time!
Heading onto the run course, I was pleasantly surprised with my legs feeling not-terrible. A run (and Olympic distance PR) were in play. It was fun to be at the front of the field, see the leading elite men run by on the out and back sections, and be able to cheer for friends. The cheers from friends who were spectating were awesome, and made the run feel a lot easier than it was. I didn’t have to dig as deep for motivation during this run as I often do. I knew that upon finishing I’d be starting a full week of zero activity and lots of beers. And, I knew Gloria was there. What more motivation could a mama need?! I squeaked across the line just under my sub-40 goal with a 39:30 run time for the 6.2 mile course. And, I think, a PR for the distance! I’d gone faster in Des Moines, but the course was a little short. Here, in photos, are two really great feelings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m now on day 5 of zero activity and many beers. You might think I’d be going a little bonkers, but I’m vacationing hard. At least as hard as I train. I know that the 6 week block of training that’s incoming will be challenging, so I’m really enjoying this time with family, friends, beers, and sleeps.
Thanks for the continuing support family and friends! And among those I consider family and friends, my sponsors. Thanks to Skechers, Roka, Champion System, Bonk Breaker, RipLaces, ISM, Profile Design, and Triple C, I’m able to pursue this passion. And, huge thanks to Giant Santa Monica for all their work and help getting me aboard Viserion and getting him ready to race in such a short time frame.
Three more days off until the work starts again!

May 5, Volunteer to Raise a Service Dog
Why not raise a service dog while you’re taking care of your own dog?
Do you love puppies? Can you teach simple commands and proper behavior? If so, then you might want to consider volunteering as a puppy trainer to assist people with special needs.
The world’s largest provider of dogs that help people with physical disabilities is the non-profit organization Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), and they are looking for a few good dog lovers to help with this important and worthwhile cause.
CCI has regional centers serving states throughout the nation. Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Santa Rosa, California, they are now in need of puppy trainers. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they helped disabled people gain independence by supplying them, at no cost, with assistance dogs.
What It Takes to Raise a Service Dog
Once you have been thoroughly screened and accepted into the program, you will bring a puppy into your home and community for a little over a year. In raising your service dog you are responsible for:
• Providing a safe environment for the dog
• Loving the animal and helping with socialization
• Paying for and feeding the dog a healthy diet
• Taking the puppy to approved obedience classes
• Transporting the puppy to, and paying for, its medical check-ups.
As a member of your home and family, the puppy's habits and behaviors will become well-known to you. You are expected to submit monthly reports to the organization. When the dog is not indoors or sleeping in a kennel or crate at night, it is expected to be on a leash when outdoors or in a fenced yard.
Process of Becoming a Puppy Trainer
This successful program has a rigorous application process. It can take as long as two years for a person to be accepted as a volunteer. People wanting to raise a service dog must be at least 18 years of age. If they are under that age, a parent or guardian must be the co-applicant. Puppy trainers must acknowledge they are to return the puppy after training is completed. People interested in joining the program may begin by going online to the organization's website to request an application: www.cci.org
Where the Dogs Come From
Labrador retrievers, golden Retrievers, and mixtures of the two breeds are top choices of Canine Companions and come from the organization's own breeding program. In choosing one from a litter, the organization looks at the dog's temperament, health, trainability, sisters and brothers, and the past offspring of its dam and sire.
Volunteer to Become a Breeder-Caretaker
Canine Companions also needs another type of volunteer: a breeder-caretaker for Labrador retriever and golden retriever service dogs. People who live within 90 miles of Santa Rosa, California can apply to help care for breeder dogs. Once the pups are born, the volunteers will raise them as outlined above. Anyone interested in pursuing this job may go to the organization's website to get the phone number or email address.
Interim After Home Instruction
When training ends at your home, the dog is typically 14 to 16 months old. From there it goes to a professional training center for 6 to 9 months of advanced training. Even at this point, some dogs may be released because they are not a good fit for the program. During advanced training, basic commands are reinforced. Dogs also begin working around a wheelchair and learn the “retrieve” command. As the weeks go by, the puppies learn commands such as “pull” and “light switch” and “open the door.” By the time they are finished, they will understand 40 cues.
Team Training
Finally, the dog is partnered in a two-week training camp with the person it will assist. During these sessions, commands will be modified to ensure the recipient and the dog are well matched.
Types of Assistance Dogs
After training is completed, the dog will be used as a service dog, hearing dog, facility dog, or skilled companion. Service dogs perform common tasks such as picking up keys, turning on lights, pushing elevator buttons, opening doors, and pulling on a person who's seated in a manual wheelchair.
These graduate dogs can even help people with their business transactions by transferring money, collecting receipts, and receiving packages. Service dogs are helpful to individuals with arthritis, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, and many other disabilities.
Hearing dogs alert their partners to sounds by nudging or pulling on their arm or leg when they hear sounds such as the call of a name, the doorbell or a fire alarm. Facility dogs are paired with a person who works at a rehab center, hospital, school, or similar setting. Dogs who are skilled companions work with a facilitator a minimum of 20 hours per week. When facilitators groom, feed and play ball with these animals, they benefit both mentally and physically. By being the link between the dog and its partner, this person promotes bonding between the two.
Help for Veterans -- The Newest Assistance Dog Program
Canine Companions for Independence is now seeking veterans as volunteers to train dogs to aid members of the armed services who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. This program currently selects its volunteers from people who live within 90 miles of Santa Cruz, California.
Other Populations Working as Volunteers
The organization's Prison Puppy Raising Program is active in 13 institutions in nine states, allowing inmates to raise a service dog. The prisons select the inmates, and donations instead of taxpayer funding support the training. CCI also operates their Collegiate Puppy Raising Program serving disabled students in over 18 of the nation's colleges and universities.
People who love puppies and who can make a commitment of time and talent will find purpose and joy when they raise a service dog. Yes, it’s a sad day when you must part with your special companion, but think of the newfound ability your efforts will bring to that person less fortunate than you.

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio — He captured hearts after picking out his own toy at the store, but Anatoli is no ordinary dog. He’s got a job.
In the video, which went viral in April and reached viewers around the world, a dog walks down the aisle of a store alongside his human. He pauses briefly at each bin to consider his options before carefully selecting his own birthday present, a stuffed rabbit.
Mike Cantu, Anatoli’s owner, said this wasn’t the first time Anatoli chose his own toy. The dog, who turned four in April, did the same thing for his birthday the year before.
“I was expecting him to just try to pick up every single toy there was, but it was interesting cause he was very methodical about it,” Cantu said.
This time, though, Cantu and his mother decided to record it. Cantu posted the video on his Instagram account, where it got a lot of attention. He ended up posting it on Reddit, too.
“I’ve heard of a sub-Reddit called Dogs with Jobs, and I thought, you know, this is perfect. He’s a perfect fit for that,” Cantu said.
Cantu said he didn’t expect the video to become so popular. A few viewers even mailed Toli presents, including one person from the U.K.
“When we filmed it, I thought, ‘My friends will get a kick out of this,’” Cantu said. “Nothing more. I had no expectations of it going anywhere past my Instagram.”
Toli may now be famous on the Internet, but he’s still working his day job as Cantu’s service animal. Cantu is a quadriplegic, who broke his neck in 2011 in a trampoline accident. He said he has no use of his hands and limited use of his arms.
Tumblr media
Olivia Fecteau
“Toli helps me a lot, especially at school, with opening doors, picking up things that I drop cause I’m very clumsy,” Cantu, who graduated in May from Kent State, said. “He can turn on and off light switches. He will carry things around for me. He can open up drawers and things like that.”
Cantu said he was initially hesitant to get a service dog, feeling sorry for dogs who had to work, but finally decided to apply. When he met trainers and dogs from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), he changed his mind.
“I instantly knew these dogs absolutely love what they do,” Cantu said. “Every morning when I get his vest out, he gets super excited.”
Cantu waited two years to get Toli from CCI. The North-Central region of the organization, which covers 14 states, is headquartered in central Ohio and graduates approximately 60 new service dogs each year, according to John Phillips, president of the Northern Ohio Chapter.
“These dogs, at the early ages, they’re eager to learn,” Phillips said. “And when you’re holding a treat in front of them, they learn relatively quickly.”
Tumblr media
Olivia Fecteau
A puppy lies on the ground at a CCI training session in Strongsville.
Phillips, a puppy-raiser himself, is now training his third dog with the organization. He said volunteers typically get their puppies at eight weeks old and raise them for the next 16 months, shouldering all the costs for their training. Volunteers teach the dogs approximately 30 commands and send monthly reports to the regional training center.
“At about 18 months old, they go back in,” Phillips said. “We call it matriculation, and they go to professional training for six months, and hopefully there they become a service dog.”
The dogs sometimes attend group training sessions, which the Northern Ohio chapter holds on the first and third Mondays of each month. At a recent training session in Strongsville, dogs walked up open stairs, walked through tunnels and spent time around firefighters and fire trucks. Dogs also learned to listen to their puppy-raisers and obey commands even in distracting, noisy situations.
Tumblr media
Olivia Fecteau
CCI dogs work on obeying commands at a training session in Strongsville.
Phillips said 75 to 80 percent of the chapter’s puppies graduate, compared with 55 to 60 percent across CCI in general. The dogs are then paired up with people who have disabilities to work as service dogs.
Tumblr media
Olivia Fecteau
These three puppies are in training to become service dogs.
For Cantu, having Toli has been “huge.”
“Toli legitimately has changed my life for the better,” Cantu said. “It’s hard to imagine going back to life without him.”
Cantu graduated with a degree in zoology and will now navigate a post-college world with help from Toli. He praised Kent State for having a campus that is “very used to and very accommodating to service dogs, which helped a lot.”
Phillips said CCI has a breeding program in Santa Rosa, California, where 125 to 150 former CCI dogs are bred for "service dog quality" traits—dogs that are calm and eager to please their humans.
Although it is difficult to say goodbye at the end of a puppy-raiser’s time with his or her dog, Phillips said it’s worth it.
“A lot of tears are shed, but you know the dogs are going for a greater purpose,” Phillips said.

Ironman 70.3 Santa Rosa in the books. Out of all the Ironman races I've done over the past 10 years this has to be one of my favorite courses and experiences of all time. I felt strong the entire race and had to hold back a bit because I didn't feel like I was totally rested from New Zealand just a week earlier. My personal race recap of Santa Rosa 70.3 will be up on my website soon and thanks again to all my friends, family, and sponsors for the support leading up to this warm up race for the big ones to come later this year. @ironmantri #trilab #roworx #redaceorganics #ironmantri #ironmansantarosa703 #awaironman #santarosacity #winecountry #Triathlete #training #travel #therapy #wine #vineyard #experience #lakesonoma #medal #fit #fitspo #motivated #motivation #inspiration #inspirationalquotes #inspire #mgsport #redacebeets #mdot #crosstraining (at Santa Rosa, California)

Original Post from SC Magazine Author: Doug Olenick
These five women have exerted influence on a variety of cybersecurity issues — from policy, awareness training and legislation to R&D and regulatory compliance.
Dinah Davis vice president, research and development, Arctic Wolf Networks
When she started university studies as a math major 20 years ago at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, Dinah Davis thought she would pursue the traditional track for a woman – a career as a math teacher, as suggested by her high school career counselor.
“One of the great things about my undergraduate years at Lethbridge was that they encouraged us to take a lot of different courses outside of our major, so I took as many courses in computer science that I could,” Davis says. “Over time I discovered that computer science fit in nicely with the way my brain works in terms of a problem-solving approach.”
Davis also was exposed to cryptography as part of the internships she did with the Canadian government during her undergraduate years at Lethbridge. Later on as a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, Davis earned a master’s degree in mathematics majoring in cryptography.
After graduation, she worked for eight years on the development team at BlackBerry that focused on security.
“I was part of the team that made BlackBerrys secure enough that government agencies and corporations would use it for their most sensitive data,” she says.
Today, she heads up the team at Arctic Wolf Networks that’s building the underlying platform for the company’s SOC-as-a-Service offering.
Davis has also become a major advocate for encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM fields. She founded Code Like A Girl, a publication that supports women in tech, guides allies on how they can help, provides resources for parents and teachers for getting girls involved in tech, and works to change perceptions of women in technology.
“On one of my previous jobs, I had a misogynistic boss and I decided to leave,” she says. “I started blogging about my experiences and it turned into the site that exists today where we now have 40,000 followers and up to 3,000 unique views a day.”
Davis has also been planning to bring many female keynoters to the CyberCity Conference in the Waterloo area in October. She says that with so many open jobs in cybersecurity, it makes sense the industry should steer women into a career in that field. Davis wants to promote the Waterloo Region as a cybersecurity hub along with its existing reputation as tech hub. “We have a female keynote speaker yet to be announced and are also looking into running a blind CTP event so that gender will have no play in who we choose to speak at the conference,” Davis says.
“I am not a fan of Women In Security panels where they talk about being a woman in security. That story has been told already,” she says. “We want to see women in security speaking about security so that they become role models for other women and men in the audience.”
The security field offers a career path where people can start off as an entry-level analyst and work their way to becoming a security engineer or researcher, says Davis. In fact, she points out that a Deloitte study identifies something like 20 different titles within cybersecurity.
“There are a lot of ways people can get involved, they don’t have to have a math background like me,” she says. “People can participate in various capture-the-flag events both locally and online, take a college program geared towards cybersecurity, or simply do reading on their own.” – Steve Zurier
Angela Davis Dogan director, vendor risk and compliance services; member, executive strategy team, Lynx Technology Partners
Angela Davis Dogan’s contributions to the field of cybersecurity can be neatly summed up as a combination of “Risk” and “Reward.”
As director of vendor risk and compliance services for infosec company Lynx Technology Partners, Dogan develops third-party risk management programs for enterprises and public sector organizations, allowing them to mitigate threats that often arise when sharing data or systems with business partners.
Then, in her spare time, she mentors underrepresented women and minority youths in the Greenville, South Carolina area, encouraging them to reap the rewards of a career in cybersecurity.
Dogan has devoted 16 years to helping companies combat third-party risk. She presently serves on the Steering Committee of the Shared Assessments Program, a global member-led organization with a mission to drive third-party risk assurance via best practices, training and technology. Dogan also chairs the organization’s Standardized Controls Assessment Tool Development Committee, which aids in the advancement and adoption of emerging risk management solutions.
The Shared Assessments Program is managed by the Santa Fe Group, a strategic consulting company where Dogan worked as senior project manager from 2013-2017. During this time she helped guide the development of best practices and resources that were ultimately integrated into leading organizations’ vendor risk management frameworks. Before that, she was a vendor auditor with Resurgement Capital Services, a manager and servicer of consumer debt portfolios for credit grantors and debt buyers.
Dogan also serves on the Cloud Security Alliance’s Cloud Controls Matrix Working Group, assisting in the organization’s efforts to further enhance its cloud security framework for the past three years.
Last year Dogan received an Outstanding Service Award from the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP), where she volunteers in an effort to grow the cyber workforce through diversity initiatives. She is a current member and past director of the organization’s Corporate Events Committee and has assisted in the development of its K-12 outreach program. Dogan is also a member of Techgirlz, Women in Cybersecurity (WiCys) and Women In Technology (WIT).
A grandmother of four, Dogan says her personal goal is to one day develop a third-party risk management curriculum for students. – Bradley Barth
Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan director, cybersecurity research lab, professor, information technology management, Ryerson University
Dr. Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan may have settled into life as a professor at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she focuses on information systems security, cryptography and combinatorics, but she previously had an extensive career on the front lines of the cybersecurity field.
Mashatan’s co-workers nominated her based on her leadership and efforts in advancing the industry, as well as academic partnership with focus on cybersecurity. In her current role she “has been a tireless innovator and leader…for development of talent through mentorship and broader society in advancement of trust in technology through cybersecurity.”
Mashatan’s care and dedication to her subject matter is also obvious to many of her students who gave her a series of glowing reviews for the most recent semester.
“Professor Mashatan clearly cares about her students. She was always willing to help me and others after class. Her level of expertise and knowledge is evident in her teaching and she is able to clearly articulate the material. Tests and assignments were difficult but fair. They helped me gain new knowledge about information security,” said one student.
Prior to Ryerson, from 2012-2016, Mashatan was with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce as a senior information security consultant and solutions architect and led the evaluation of newly proposed and existing security systems while providing subject matter expertise related to threat and risk management. The preceding three years were spent as a scientific collaborator at the Security and Cryptography Laboratory of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences, EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne) where she conducted research on design and analysis of cryptographic protocols.
She is a Certified Service Oriented Architect (SOA) with honors and obtained the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification from International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) in 2015.  – Doug Olenick
Algirde Pipikaite project lead, governance and policy, Centre for Cybersecurity,  World Economic Forum
Devout ice skating fans might recognize Algirde Pipikaite as a former Lithuanian champion skater, but over the last 15 years, she’s also distinguished herself in cybersecurity, summoning legal, technical and business knowledge combined with prudent and pragmatic risk-taking to tackle complex issues and influence the advancement of cybersecurity in both the private and the public sectors.
Perhaps it is her fluency in chess – she’s a champion in that as well – that makes Pipikaite a successful and respected strategist in the security sector. As project lead of governance and policy at the Centre for Cybersecurity at the World Economic Forum, Pipikaite works closely with investors – bringing together leaders from the likes of S&P Global and Moody’s – to tease out new market incentives that will help make security a priority in technological innovation. By pushing for security to be backed into software, resulting in less vulnerable offerings, Pipikaite strives to shrink the cyberspace attack surface.
She came to the World Economic Forum from CyberSponse, Inc., where she was the vice president of information risk. Her journey to cybersecurity started with work on a variety of international development and security projects that included the launch of a community-driven group for incident responders.
Billed as a digital transformation and cybersecurity policymaker, Pipikaite holds an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an LLM from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and a B.A. from Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania. – Teri Robinson
Rosa Smothers senior VP, cyber operations, KnowBe4
As a cyber threat analyst who supported cyber operations in the Central Intelligence Agency for more than a decade and a veteran of the Iraq war, Rosa Smothers has built up a portfolio of skills and experience – much of which can’t be disclosed for national security reasons, though one supporter said her CIA work qualified her as “an all-out badass” – that make her an influential player in the cybersecurity industry.
At KnowBe4, where she’s senior vice president of cyber operations, Smothers conducts internal investigations that bring her research and forensics experience to bear – and showcases her ability to work with external subject matter experts in coordinated efforts to determine attack attribution.
Her extensive research into FedRAMP and contract-specific work shaped KnowBe4’s plan to become the first, and what is currently the only, security and awareness training platform in the FedRAMP marketplace. Exemplary of her influence is her work with two lobbying firms in Washington to help boost federal cybersecurity legislation.
Smothers puts in considerable time with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to develop cybersecurity working groups and caucuses aimed at tackling cybersecurity issues and has provided input to various committees across different industries that touch on cybersecurity. Her efforts have paid off and she’s lauded for increasing lawmakers’ understanding of the importance of security awareness training and simulated phishing to help mitigate cyber threats.
She is generous with her time in helping women understand their value and improve their status within the cybersecurity industry and cultivating the tools and confidence for them to develop persuasive and assertive skills. She has mentored countless women and was tapped as a designated mentor during her tenure at the CIA. Smothers also is a member of Women in Defense, aimed
at advancing women in national security.  – Teri Robinson

17: President and CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind Thomas Panek will run United Airlines NYC Half 2019 Marathon Completely by Guide Dogs
Accomplished distance runner and President/CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind Thomas Panek to run the United Airlines NYC Half marathon with several running guide dogs, including yellow Labrador Retriever Yukon.
Cheer on Thomas Panek, as for the first time, a blind runner will run this race — guided by a relay of three running guide dogs instead of human guides. These dogs are trained by Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a nonprofit organization that has been training service dogs for people with vision loss for the past 65 years. Thomas is running to raise awareness and funds to provide athletes who are blind with a service dog capable of guiding while running. An accomplished distance runner who is blind, Thomas will partner with a relay of three Labrador Retrievers who will pace him one at a time on the 13.1-mile race course. A team of veterinarians and volunteers stationed along the course will provide vet check-ups and ensure the team’s hydration, health and safety. Three yellow labs, Lynx, Waffle and Yukon, and one black lab, Westley, are logging in miles training for the upcoming race. Gus, a yellow lab and the first running guide dog to complete a sanctioned New York Road Runners and Boston Athletic Association Event as a running guide, will pace Panek for the final 5K across the finish line. Gus will officially retire as Thomas’ personal guide dog and running partner and trade in his Ruffwear UniFly Guide Dog Harness for a medal.
