George W. Eades Flies the Firestone Plane
nov 1930 Geo. W. Eades, local Firestone Dealer recently paid a visit to Ottawa, where he was a guest of the Hugh Carson Company, Limited, Firestone Distributors for Eastern Ontario and portion of Quebec. While in Ottawa,. Mr. Eades was taken for a flight in the giant Firestone Airplane which is making a goodwill tour of Eastern Canada and has on board officials of the Firestone Tire and Rubber…

Okay I keep seeing this from modern fantasy writers with Rings of Power
Modern fantasy writers and their fans: Fantasy lack diversity!
Me: okay i understand when it comes to fantasy most western think of lord of the rings and other European stuff. But when in the crimson FUCK you were force to SOLELY use those European settings?!
Also someone pointed out that when it comes to games like Forspoken “diversity” they point out the issues of CULTURAL EXCHANGE when it comes to non white characters
Probably because the writers don’t look up or don’t understand it…or presume the trendy 2nd to 4th generation SJWs non whites known everything about their heritage….
Like I pointed out how Assassin Creed used historical trade routes to their advantage or most famous is them using the polo brothers travels to the east to set up the Italy renaissance games
I rant on forspoken a lot because it came from a cancelled sequel for Final Fantasy 15 and use the same engine
Wanna guess how I feel seeing the lane af shit in Forspoken which was supposed to be “next gen” vs the cool shit I did in FF15 that I own a physical copy since I was 16? 🥴
Also you can solely introduce Afro Mythos ti western audiences, get them familiar with it. And than do bigger projects
Long term gain is how Henry ford, Firestone, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and historical figures made us their sheep even in death
ALSO FUCKING USE FANTASY MIX WITH STEAMPUNK FOR BLACK AMERICANS INSPIRED CHARACTERS- oh right they hate capitalism and don’t understand that black Americans, and Americans in general, are a new breed of humans history haven’t seen before at such a large scale
“PRAISE THE CHIMERAS, AS THEY ARE THE UNHOLY UNION OF COUNTLESS ROOTS!”
You says I might disappear for 8 weeks straight as soon as shadows get into my hands. I would but I need money!
Ugh, how did these writers work on so big projects?
Me: okay i understand when it comes to fantasy most western think of lord of the rings and other European stuff. But when in the crimson FUCK you were force to SOLELY use those European settings?!
I'd love to see some Nigerian folktale get turned into a movie or series and force in some Koreans in the name of diversity™ and see how that goes over, probably not well since it's supposed to only be European folktales.
Also someone pointed out that when it comes to games like Forspoken “diversity” they point out the issues of CULTURAL EXCHANGE when it comes to non white characters
Again that only works if it's not a story that's European in origin, like it looks like you're saying.
Probably because the writers don’t look up or don’t understand it…or presume the trendy 2nd to 4th generation SJWs non whites known everything about their heritage….
Most of us know we're mutts, or I'd hope we do at least. Genetics=/=culture, white baby that is the only survivor of a plane crash in Chad and is adopted by one of the local families, grows up knowing only that culture and what not is going to be more African than a 5th generation black American dude in Harlem.
Wanna guess how I feel seeing the lane af shit in Forspoken which was supposed to be “next gen” vs the cool shit I did in FF15 that I own a physical copy since I was 16? 🥴
I imagine that's common for lots of people.
Also you can solely introduce Afro Mythos ti western audiences, get them familiar with it. And than do bigger projects
I would enjoy that so long as I don't have to put up with people telling me "It's not for you" because then I will just not interact with it thus denying it my money, since if it's not for me why do I care.
See previous "mutt" comments
“PRAISE THE CHIMERAS, AS THEY ARE THE UNHOLY UNION OF COUNTLESS ROOTS!”
Amen
You says I might disappear for 8 weeks straight as soon as shadows get into my hands. I would but I need money!
Still working, just not on here so much was what I was getting at, free time will be taken up with playing Shadows and soaking all of it in.
Ugh, how did these writers work on so big projects?
For Stephen King it was copious amounts of cocaine, at least after he was established.
Getting yourself established is the issue, used to be you had someone that was rich as a patron, those are few and far between now but Pateron does exist so they can try and get covered by lots of people, which seems to work for some folks.
Which I'm glad about that, oddly that was one of the original reasons for onlyfans to exist, pateron alternative, people found out they were porn friendly tho so it went the way it's going now.

📻 what are some things tye and gabe feel for each other 👀
oh, you have no idea what you've unleashed!!!!
I know the ask is supposed to be one random song but you're getting 3 from each playlist because these boys make have made me insane for YEARS now amd i'll explode if i don't gush about them.
Gonna put them under a read more cause there is so much lol
thank you for asking and enjoy <3
my number 3 songs for Tye about Gabe:
Strawberry Mentos - Leanna Firestone
During their travels to get Tye's halo back and get intel on the Angel Trappers that had captured Tye the boys travel from town to town. It's slow going since Tye is still recovering from losing his wing. He goes through a pretty bad bout of depression and Gabe notices.
One day Gabe comes back with a lil bag full of Tye's favourite candies to cheer him up, something Tye only off-handedly mentioned once a few days back. That incredibly small but overwhelmingly thoughtful gesture, the fact he even remembered, is the very first spark for Tye that makes him realise he might feel something more for Gabe.
Favourite Lines:
You're deliberately kind, you make efforts to share your time You're not afraid of your feelings, and you're not afraid of mine I never knew love could be soft, I never knew love could be light And now I'm so helplessly sugar high on you
Ready Now - Dodie
Back to Tye's depression for a sec. During their whole adventure, Gabriel is only ever short with Tye once. The rest of the time he's patient, lets Tye open up slowly which he eventually does. Gabe gives him the room to recover from losing his wing both physically and mentally and he's forever grateful for it.
Favourite lines:
Something new, something strange Ten feet taller, I had changed I believe you, I'm not wrong Oh, it suits me to feel strong You said "I will listen, tell me it all You don't like the ending? Then we'll find one that's yours" Oh, how did you know? That's all we need? A promise of hope Is enough to feel free
Things That Make it Warm - Cavetown
this is mostly just vibes since the rest of the song doesn't super fit but like...
Tye loses his wing and then his depression and other injuries make it hard to groom the other one so Gabriel does it for him. Wing grooming is a bonding ritual between Angels and those they trust (friends, family, etc) so he's initially nervous about letting a guy he's known for like a week do it but it easily becomes the best part of each night. Gabriel is gentle with him. cautious of his injuries and it just makes him feel warm inside. Reminds him of the home he probably won't ever see again.
Favourite lines:
My feathers seem to have taken the brunt of the storm They are feeling pretty worn We finally found shelter tucked away inside a wall Though for now it's pretty small
my number 3 songs for Gabe about Tye:
Aphrodite - The Ridleys
First off i know about the bad luck surrounding comparing others to Aphrodite ESPECIALLY because she was my matron deity for a while but like cmon man...
It's Gabriel pining over Tye secretly (this is a VERY common theme in his playlist lmao)
He thinks he's the most beautiful thing to ever grace all three planes even when his feathers are all messy or he's all snotty from crying.
Tye is sweet torture when they're not together and when they finally do get together he can't believe how fucking lucky he is to be cosmically paired with this breathtakingly beautiful man.
Favourite lines:
I see the galaxies when I look in your eyes And I, can't speak, no, I, can't speak at all I swear to Zeus, you're Aphrodite in disguise Don't think that you could hide it from me Oh, no, I never thought I'd get this close to someone so divine Oh, I, can't breathe, no, I, can't breathe at all Aphrodite, could you, could you please be mine? Oh Could you please be mine? Oh, mine
"Do You Wanna Be Friends?" - Leanna Firestone
Gabriel pining part 2 but this time sadder.
It's about the Soulmate stuff.
One night in their travels they talk about stuff and the question of their soulmates comes up.
Neither have found theirs yet and without Tye's Halo he won't ever have confirmation if he does find a demon with his mark.
They talk about what they'd do if they never found their other half. Tye says he'd wait forever if he had to, that he wouldn't want to hurt either his Soulmate OR his potential future partner.
When Gabriel realizes his feelings he's stuck. Even though he didn't care about finding his Soulmate or whatever but Tye did.
He doesn't ever want to put Tye in the position of having to choose but he's also too afraid to show Tye his mark incase they didn't match because he can't imagine a world where they're apart anymore.
So he pines quietly, puts all of his affection in friendly gestures. Buying Tye his favourite candies, grooming his wing, helping make his cane etc
Favourite lines:
And so we'll be friends And I'll be okay The world won't end If you don't love me Even if it feels that way
Suneater - Leanna Firestone
This one is also for vibes???
I just think the lyrics accurately describe Tye in my brain and therefore in Gabe's too.
Favourite lines:
And I see the whole galaxy in your eyes And I long to tell you But I think it'll only make you shy You got the heart of a Leo But you're sweet like a Pisces And the only thing I know is I think I might be falling for The boy who swallowed the sun
And last but not least one from BOTH their playlists that kinda started their playlists to begin with and it would be a crime not to mention (EDIT: i checked the playlists and there's one song that predates LE by like a month but i assume its because i wasn't fully committed to making the playlist yet)
Life Eternal - Ghost
Its self-explanatory really... It's more vibes and soulmate bullshit :}
Favourite lines:
Can you hear me say your name forever? Can you see me longing for you forever, forever? Would you let me touch your soul forever? Can you feel me longing for you forever, forever?
It was the main catalyst for a whole series of drawings I did for them that really shaped my art for the better
Like this speedpaint and the drawing after are only a year apart and I might just do a third. Make this piece a yearly or semiannually thing
Anyways
if you made it all the way down here you are a fucking real one. Thank you for reading my 3-5 am rambles about 2 motherfuckers who I made all the way back in HIGHSCHOOL, forgot about until 2021 or 2022 and then proceeded to irreparably change my brain chemistry.
One day i'll actually work on their book/webcomic but until then
<3

Ectogenesis: Will it End Labor Pains and Miscarriages?
What is Ectogenesis?
Can you think of a situation where children are born by machines rather than the usual procedure of a pregnant woman? Can you imagine a world where natural pregnancy is extinct? Where women no longer feel labor pain nor experience the feeling of carrying an unborn child?Have you ever thought of a world where premature babies, ectopic pregnancies, abortion, and other maternal risk issues no longer pose a threat to human race reproduction? Well, ectogenesis technology is working on changing the face of human reproduction and making this a reality. Before I go on, do you understand what ectogenesis is and where the idea came from?Ectogenesis is a medical technology that provides similar environment conditions to a natural womb of a female human reproduction system. The technology aims to handle the development, growth, and delivery of a fetus outside of a woman's body. Also called the artificial womb, the technology is still a fiction development and holds significant potential in human reproduction. A successful ectogenesis is when fertilization, gestation with the complete process of conception and embryo growth occurs outside the human body.Research is still progressing to achieve this throughout the globe, due to its complexity. The main task behind the artificial womb is to provide a similar environment condition to that in a mother womb and provide a successful offspring delivery.
The origin of Ectogenesis
J B S Haldane, a Biologist at Cambridge University came up with the word Ectogenesis to describe the formation of fetus independent of the human body. He was the first Biologist to suggest that an egg could mature outside a mother's womb. He explained the theory in an event that took place at the Heretics Society of the University of Cambridge. His lecture was driven by an ideology written by a student in 2073 writing about biological advances preceding 150 years. The student's essay explains how two scientists extracted the ovaries of a woman from a plane crash in 1951 and fertilized her eggs outside her womb. The actions of the scientists gave Haldane the idea of Ectogenesis technology. This term has been a topic of interest for a very long time, with researchers and scientists making progress in its development.During World War II, progress towards achieving Haldane's idea slowed down. The interest dimmed due to mixed reactions from society. It wasn't until 1970 when a feminist, Shulamith Firestone, published a book, The Dialectic of Sex. She stated that the idea could only be successful through machines. Her book further explained that the reason why science failed to accomplish the idea by then was due to its repercussions. In the late '90s and early 2000s, scientists across the globe started experimenting with Haldane's idea of Ectogenesis technology by using animal lamb fetuses. The idea is stated fictious due to unavoidable questions about the implications and the risks that follow. An artificial human reproduction system seems too complex to achieve since the required aspects are difficult to handle to produce accurate results.
What is the significance of Ectogenesis?
This technology application has different impacts on the society, science and the health industry. Here are some of the significances of ectogenesis:- Medical Advancements: Ectogenesis provides a controlled and sterile environment to a fetus through a monitored technology that acknowledges any hazard. Doctors have a chance for a quick response on any unusual incident to ensure the safety of the fetus. Through this concept, ectogenesis has the potential to revolutionize neonatal care and reduce mertanal risk. Managing these risks will come in a better manner with better chances of saving the baby and mother. - Reproductive Freedom: As ectogenesis is becoming a reality, couples can choose either the natural way or the artificial way. A number of women want children but do not want to get pregnant. Adoption is always an option here, but ectogenesis provides a better option. - Gender Equality: For a long time, a woman has a greater responsibility to parenting than the opposite gender. It has made women feel over burdened, leaving men with a minor task. Many couples seek alternatives like adoption, or hire people to fulfill the responsibility. Ectogenesis now provides an option where the woman attains lesser burden. For couples finding it a challenge to go the natural way now have otherwise through technology. - Reproduction Options: People with abnormalities concerning reproduction may get relief due to the introduction of ectogenesis technology. The concept applies to women who have womb complications that hinder pregnancy. It is now a reality that you can bear a baby without the necessity of a natural womb. The required conditions to carry a child are provided by ectogenesis if your womb cannot meet them. - Research Breakthough: The above concept requires significant advances in technology and medical research, which could lead to breakthroughs in fields such as stem cell research, tissue engineering, and developmental biology.
What is the science and technology behind Ectogenesis?
Ectogenesis aims to create an environment outside the human body where an embryo or fetus can gestate and develop until it reaches a viable stage for birth. With similar conditions experienced in a mother's womb, the technology should perform similary or better than a human body.Let us have alook at the elements building up this technology, they include,- Artificial Womb Technology: For ectogenesis to work, creating an artificial womb is an important aspect. The artificial womb provides replica conditions to that of a natural womb. In the artificial womb, this is where the fetus grows and matures till birth. As the fetus grows, supply of required necessities takes place to ensure the survival of the fetus. The design of the womb provides a home to the fetus until birth. - Fetal Development: After fertilization, the embryos develop through assist of technology concepts like the vitro fertilization procedures. The artificial womb supports the development and growth at all stages. Procudures put here follow an automatic system ensuring growth of organs and circulation of nutrients. Monitoring the procedures makes sure no unusual incident occurs. - Stable Environmental Control System: There are required conditions and factors to meet while the fetus grows in the artificial bag. A control software system works in ensuring the artificial wombs meets these conditions. Maintaining an appropriate temperature is one crucial element needed. For a succesful outcome, the control has to ensure that these conditions are similar to that of a human body. - Resources delivery: For the fetus and body organs to grow, supply of nutrients required is vital. The artificial womb involves the nutrient-rich solution circulated through the system to copy the applications of the placenta in a natural pregnancy. Regulating the movement of nutrients is crucial since over supply can damage the fetus. - Monitor and Control System: The growth of the fetus is a slow procedure, and a miss step can lead a fatal outcome. As the fetus grows in the artificial womb, sensors placed ensure nothing goes wrong according to plan. Any vital action or adjustment of the environment is immediately detected.
Is Ectogenesis Necessary?
A number of people around the globe find bearing children a challenge due to different factors affecting the outcome. The common element taking attention of many is maternal health risks witnessed during pregnancy and birth.Couples facing maternal health risks are the priority of ectogenesis technology, and it's evident from the basis of the idea. These health problems, would only be solved with the advancement of the technology. Some of these risks are ectopic pregnancies, placental complications, preeclampsia, premature births, and others. In a situation where you do not detect the health issues early enough, its unfortunate the damage could be irreversible. Other factors affecting the above issue include social influence and personal reasons. Some women find pregnancy a burden and would wish to eliminate the process but still be able to bear children.Transferring premature babies to incubators to complete body development is part of ectogenesis, but the primary goal of ectogenesis technology is to replace the human womb and not for rescue missions. Experiments done to support this technology have not produced the desired results, with progress detected in various institutions. Experiments that brought progress Experiments carried out at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel are an example of studying how genetic mutations occur. The use of mice and lamb embryos is to determine whether human culturing is possible. After five days of gestation in the mother mouse, scientists transferred the embryos to artificial wombs. A span of six more days, is used to grow the embryos through ectogenesis. The lead doctor, Dr. Jacob Hanna, further reported more progress after transferring an embryo at day 0 of gestation. The main challenge is understanding how a single fertilized egg cell can create all the required specific cells of a human body.In Philadelphia, a different research group developed an artificial womb called Biobag. While using a sheep, scientists successfully transferred a fetus between 120 to 140 days of gestation. This age is equivalent to 23 to 24 weeks in humans. Observers say that the technology used is not yet suitable for human culturing, but with progress, this could be a reality. More advanced technology and research is needed to achieve this idea.
Benefits of Ectogenesis
Despite the fact that ectogenesis is still an idea under implementation, there are potential benefits that can come along with it. Alot of research in making this tecnology a reality is on to ensure benefits do not come at a cost. Some of the benefits said to come along with the technology are:- Decline in Maternal Health Risks: Gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and complications from cesarean sections are examples of maternal health risks withnessed during pregnancy and childbirth. Ectogenesis includes a full-time monitoring of the fetus, with an immediate response when anything goes wrong. - Alternative to Natural Pregnancy: The reproduction technology offers couples or individuals with more control on reproduction. If the individuals involved do not wish to undergo the natural pregnancy model, ectogenesis could be an option. - Controlled Premature Infant Care: Premature babies is a common challenge during pregnancy. With the monitoring systems applied by Ectogenesis, one can easily detect the problem and action taken accordingly. The controlled environment will ensure that the organs are fully grown to increase the chances of survival. - Reduction in Abortion cases:The effect of abortion is well understood to harm both the mother and the unborn child. Well, ectogenesis provides an alternative to individuals who want to eliminate the natural pregnancy. The technology allows a smooth transfer of the fetus from the natural womb to the artificial one harmless. - Assisted reproduction:Individuals who cannot perform a natural pregnancy due to health problems now have an alternative to reproduce. Women with womb complications that hinder the natural pregnancy can use ectogenesis technology. The technology does not depend on parent health for reproduction since it is constant in all aspects.
Moral Concepts Challenging Ectogenesis
- Religious leaders and society elders believe pregnancy is a sole act of creation. Only God can perform this act, and involvement of technology is considered immoral. The act of creating life is not a human responsibility and is a challenge to God. - The role of parenting is not the responsibility of technology. If we encourage the techology, it will leave many parents irresponsible toward artificially gestated children. The connection between a child and the mother starts immediately after fertilization and requires the natural pregnancy. - Ectogenesis has the potential of enhancing embryos during the process. Many researchers would to try out techniques that valuate natural or divine order. The manipulation would bring about spiritual disorder according to the religion.
Conclusion
The main idea behind the invention of ectogenesis is unclear since it provides diverse solutions and ideas. The use of this technology depends on why and how factors. As research continues, alot of effort is to be applied to make this a reality.Technology and scientific concepts have to work hand in hand to reduce any errors. Configuring the stated functions seems unrealistic at the current level of technology.Researchers have to concentrate on the need for limiting maternal health risks rather than for optional use. All parties must be involved, and strick measures put in place. Read the full article

James Rosenquist, F-111, 1965.
"Rosenquist created F-111 for his first solo show at New York’s Leo Castelli Gallery: the dimensions of its fifty-nine interlocking panels were determined by the four walls of that particular space, so that the work, once hung, would surround and enclose the viewer. An F-111 fighter-bomber stretches the length of the painting, enveloped and overtaken by oversize images culled mostly from photographs and printed advertisements, including a wallpaper-like floral pattern, an angel food cake, a Firestone tire, light bulbs, a fork stuck in spaghetti, and a beach umbrella superimposed on an atomic blast. With its jumps in scale, its collage-style juxtaposition of image fragments, and its vivid palette, the painting exemplifies Rosenquist’s singular contribution to Pop art.
F-111 was painted in the middle of one of the most turbulent decades in US history. The fighter-bomber it depicts was, at the time, in the planning stages, and Rosenquist understood its mission to be as economic as it was military—to create jobs for Americans and support the country’s gross national product. He characterized the imagery of the painting as “a plane flying through the flak of an economy,” with the little girl under the metallic hairdryer as its pilot; he described its underwater diver in more ominous terms, as evocative of humans gasping for air during an atomic holocaust."

Today I got to visit Greenfield Village
So to keep it short, Greenfield Village is an outdoor attraction section of the Henry Ford Museum in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, the whole place is themed with historical locations centered around the mid to late 1800s and early 1900s, when things like Model T cars became the norm, and when the Wright Brothers would give rise to the aviation industry with their working model plane.
The following are captioned shots taken mostly with Pokémon GO, bringing my partners along to spice up the experience! It is also here where I'd finally catch the Sky Forme Shaymin in the Radiant Reunion quests!
Borealis the Amaura standing in front of a Dymaxian house, a concept made by retired soldiers out of plane parts to serve as a home during a housing crisis.
Claire as a Riolu next to a delicately built model house.
My main pingüino Scalder standing beside the geyser fountain in the middle of the plaza entrance to Greenfield.
Glory in her Land Forme sitting among some flowers in one of the plaza flowerbeds surrounding the fountain.
My Raichu, Saffron, exploring a locomotive workshop demonstrating all the processes that go into building trains.
Matricia the Gardevoir elegantly fitting into the old-fashioned American style residential home of the Wright Family.
I also had myself a root beer float when I stopped by the Frozen Custard snack stand, that was some of the sweetest tasting soft serve I've ever had!
Glory in her Sky Forme resting beside me while I'm having my float, enjoying the short moment we had to relax.
Clockwork the Klang admiring the Model T Ford car resting in the Ford Motor Company works.
And to cap it all off, Claire standing at the first section of the village where a ride train was just about to leave the Firestone station!

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD
Idiomatic Meaning: The point at which a theory or idea is put to a practical test; the most important point for something, the moment of truth; A place or circumstance at which the implementation of a plan or intent is to be achieved.
Literal Meaning: The location or place where a rubber object, presumably but not necessarily a tire, comes in contact with a street, road, highway, etc.
Usage: Informal or formal, spoken or written American and British English.
Origin: Mid 20th- Century, American English. This expression seems to be referencing the rubber wheels of a vehicle hitting, or making contact, with the road. The earliest appearance in print was from the year 1956, in several newspaper articles describing current advertising jargon. Other variations begin with the adverb “When” or say “hits the road” instead of “meets the road”. In the 1960’s, it was the actual slogan for the Firestone Tire Company.
Why is this funny? In the photo we see that a large passenger jet has landed not on a runway, but on a highway, directly behind a car. One person in the car is hears but hasn’t seen the plane yet and asks what the noise is. The second person is also oblivious to the jet plane directly behind them. The second person responds with a guess that the noise is construction of an airport that is going to be built where they are. The Rubber of the airplane tire has met the road, and this is the point at which the “rubber meets the road” because they plane is about to crush the car and its unaware occupants.
Sample sentence: With 15 candidates running for mayor of New York City, “the rubber will (finally) meet the road” when all the votes are tallied.

Anyways! I think I'd match you up with….
Mitsuya Takashi !
"do you have any idea what you're doing?" The words fly out of your mouth faster than you mean, but the sight of Mitsuya about to dog ear half of the page he was reading of your favorite book, makes you want to smack him upside the head
He jumps in response, then turns to face you, giving a lopsided smile, "saving my spot for later?"
You stare at him for a moment, then look at the book, and then back at him. He in return, looks at you, then the book, and then back to you.
"Is something wrong?" He asks, an innocent air to the way he does so.
"I just…you can't just…" you pause, and look at your own book, and sigh quietly.
You reach for it, and pull out what used to be a woven bracelet up until it had broken. You were able to save it by tying on a cute little animal shaped bead at the end, and thus turned it into a bookmark. It was something you've held onto for quite some time, and it had grown to be something you cherished.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, you pull the bookmark from its place, and hand it over to Takashi, "take care of this for me, okay?"
Your hands touch for a second as he takes it from you, knowing just how much you loved the thing. He had hardly ever seen you without it whenever you were reading, and even the times you would just carry it around for good luck.
He swore his heart grew a pair of wings, because why else would he feel like it was about to beat out of his chest?
"I will, i promise,"
And he does. He takes extreme care of the damn thing, to the point where the others poke fun at him for it. But he doesn't care. To him, its not just a book mark. Its quite literally a token of your affection. It's a reminder that, even if you are too shy or bashful to say it, that you love him.
And that's enough for him.

Katie Firestone headcanons?
Katie Firestone is flawless. She has two Fendi purses and a silver Lexus. I hear her hair’s insured for $10000. I hear she does car commercials — in Japan. Her favorite movie is Varsity Blues. One time she met John Stamos on a plane, and he told her she was pretty. One time, she punched me in the face. It. Was. Awesome.
(In all seriousness — Katie Firestone comes from a rich ass family [do they own the tire company? I don’t know. No one does]. She went to Sea World at least once a year when she was a Youth™️ which got her interested in orcas. She boycotted theaters that showed Blackfish and gets upset with anyone that tries to tell her Sea World is actually bad. Even Jenna, her gf, argues with her on this, but Katie won’t budge. Though she does listen to Jenna more than other people around her.)

After seeing the world in Detective Pikachu I’ve been dying for someone to dive into a supergirl pokeverse fic and honestly you’re the perfect person do it with your particular brand of fun writing style (read: you’re funny af). So I hope you’ll give it a go at some point. 🙏🏻 And that pokemon AU you already wrote is fuking perfect with Kara having a ditto as hers. My mind is reeling from possibilities of whose pokemon is who ajshdkfkfl
I got this ask so, so long ago, but I kinda put it on the backburner while life happened. Then I got another, more recent anon about a Supergirl/Pokemon crossover, so might as well tackle this now…
All right, so this is just me going more in-depth on a ficlet I’ve already written, so if you need context or a refresher, I suggest that you read that first (:
Kara: Ditto (Pikachu & Pidgeot)
When Kara first lands on Earth, she refuses to get a starter. They didn’t have pokemon on Krypton, so 1) the idea takes some getting used to, and 2) she’s still pretty reluctant to commit to assimilation. Plus, she’s seen a typical starter. All it would take is one wrong step for Kara to accidentally punt Alex’s teeny-tiny growlithe into the very yellow sun that gave her the ability to do so.
Then one day, Kara comes across a wild rattata that’s pretty insistent on getting in her path. And after one too many missteps where Kara’s forced to hover so as not to step on the pokemon, she gets frustrated enough to uproot a tree—a small one, sure, but a tree nonetheless—as if to demonstrate that she’s a force to be reckoned with.
The rattata blinks at her, melts into a purple blob, then rapidly sprouts up into a large onix. It uproots an even bigger tree. Then Kara—who’s had to practice for months on end how to be gentle—reaches out and touches the onix without any forethought or worry. When it responds with a small nod instead of recoiling in pain, it’s the first time Kara feels like a human.
They decide on pikachu for Kara Danvers because it’s disarmingly small and packs a powerful wallop. Pidgeot is decided for Supergirl because it’s the only pokemon that could have flown as quickly as she when Alex’s plane was falling from the sky.
Lena: Persian
Lena has collected many pokemon over the years because she’s a practical, resourceful woman. Poison types for developing antidotes and vaccines, electric types for conducting (hah!) experiments & such, and a kadabra to telekinetically handle dangerous chemicals, etc. Her main, however, is a very old persian that’s pretty much useless in all things but taking naps in the morning, afternoon, and setting sun in the corner of her L-Corp office.
But the persian was originally her birth mother’s main, and now it’s the only thing Lena has left of her late mother besides her first name. And though Lillian let her keep the persian, Lena was also forced to get a “proper” starter—a nidoran—so she’s got a pretty hardy nidorina for battle purposes as well.
Alex: Arcanine & Sam: Ninetales
I originally gave Alex an arcanine because I just really adored the image of Alex riding one into battle, but okay, let’s get a bit deeper than that, lmao. And to go deeper, I need to draw some parallels.
Arcanine and Ninetales are both fire pokemon, yes, but even more importantly, they’re both pokemon that are only evolved through a firestone. That is to say, they don’t just evolve by leveling up like most other pokemon do, it has to be a conscious, thoughtful, active decision. And as an older sister & single mother respectively, Alex and Sam would both make that decision without question.
They would both opt for having stronger pokemon, even if it means losing some of the more nuanced developments along the way. That, in contrast to the un-evolved pikachu (another pokemon that requires an evolution stone) that Kara’s ditto presents as? Really speaks to Alex’s need to protect her sister as loudly as possible.
And some honorable mentions:
James isn’t really one to battle—preferring gentle, yet emphatic words & political efforts rather than fists—but when he does, his onix is quite formidable. When he becomes the Guardian, his onix evolves alongside him into a steelix.
Winn’s main is more for companionship than anything else, so his cubone is perfectly suited for sitting on shoulders rather than battling.
Like Lena, Lex also took on a nidoran as his starter, but his is evolved all the way to a nidoking—a status symbol of sorts, because it shows that he could afford a moonstone. (Lena could afford one as well, obvi, but she’s a teensy bit less flashy and is perfectly happy with her nidorina)
J’onn doesn’t have a main, or so he says, but he always seems to have the exact right pokemon he needs, perfectly suited for whatever problem that might have arisen…. which is weird because trainers are technically only allowed to carry six at a time. Surely, he can’t be switching out his pokemon that often that quickly, right? Then one day, Kara catches him off guard at the DEO, and manages to see a flash of—oh my god, J’onn. Is that a mew!?
#sorry @ the eevee anon.. but hopefully this scratches your itch somewhat!#my asks.#my words.#i guess? whatever my tags.

Her Prophet Speaks: The Six Mothers of The Sisterhood
~I had been planing on an essay about how these six women laid the foundations of The Sisterhood, but it has proved to be a daunting task. And I need to get the first edition of the Liber published. So I'm punting.
I'll write said essay for a later edition. For now, here is the opening text from their respective Wikis with links to same...
Shulamith "Shulie" Firestone (January 7, 1945 – August 28, 2012)[2] was a Canadian-American radical feminist. A central figure in the early development of radical feminism and second-wave feminism, Firestone was a founding member of three radical-feminist groups: New York Radical Women, Redstockings, and New York Radical Feminists.
In 1970, Firestone authored The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution. Published in September of that year, the book became an influential feminist text.[3]Naomi Wolf said of the book in 2012: "No one can understand how feminism has evolved without reading this radical, inflammatory, second-wave landmark."

Donna J. Haraway (born September 6, 1944) is an American Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness Department and Feminist Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, United States.[1] She is a prominent scholar in the field of science and technology studies, described in the early 1990s as a "feminist, rather loosely a postmodernist".[2] Haraway is the author of numerous foundational books and essays that bring together questions of science and feminism, such as "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century" (1985) and "Situated Knowledges: The Science Question in Feminism and the Privilege of Partial Perspective" (1988).[3][4] She is also a leading scholar in contemporary ecofeminism, associated with post-humanism and new materialism movements.[5][6] Her work criticizes anthropocentrism, emphasizes the self-organizing powers of nonhuman processes, and explores dissonant relations between those processes and cultural practices, rethinking sources of ethics.[7]
Haraway has taught Women's Studies and the History of Science at the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins University. Haraway's works have contributed to the study of both human-machine and human-animal relations. Her works have sparked debate in primatology, philosophy, and developmental biology.[8] Haraway participated in a collaborative exchange with the feminist theorist Lynn Randolph from 1990 to 1996. Their engagement with specific ideas relating to feminism, technoscience, political consciousness, and other social issues, formed the images and narrative of Haraway's book Modest_Witness for which she received the Society for Social Studies of Science's (4S) Ludwik Fleck Prize in 1999.[9][10] In September 2000, Haraway was awarded the Society for Social Studies of Science's highest honor, the J. D. Bernal Award, for her "distinguished contributions" to the field.[11] Haraway serves on the advisory board for numerous academic journals, including differences, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Contemporary Women's Writing, and Environmental Humanities.

Andrea Rita Dworkin (September 26, 1946 – April 9, 2005) was an American radical feminist and writer best known for her criticism of pornography, which she argued was linked to rape and other forms of violence against women. Her views were widely criticized by liberal feminists and others. At the same time, she maintained a dialogue with political conservatives, and wrote a topically related book, Right-Wing Women. After suffering abuse from her first husband, she was introduced to radical feminist literature, and began writing Woman Hating.
After moving to New York, she became an activist and a writer on several issues, eventually publishing 10 books on feminism.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Dworkin became known as a spokeswoman for the feminist anti-pornography movement, and for her writing on pornography and sexuality, particularly Pornography: Men Possessing Women (1981) and Intercourse (1987), which remain her two most widely known books. She wrote on pornography from a feminist perspective and in opposition to obscenity law, and she worked with Women Against Pornography and Linda Boreman. She considered the pornography industry to be based on turning women into objects for abuse by men. Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon developed a legislative approach based on civil rights rather than obscenity to outlaw pornography and allow lawsuits against pornographers for damages, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. She testified at a federal commission against pornography, leading some stores to withdraw certain magazines from sale, but a court ruled the government's efforts unconstitutional. Critics argued that no causal relationship between pornography and harm to women had been found. In 1992, a Canadian court adapted parts of Dworkin and MacKinnon's theory on sex equality, although Dworkin opposed parts of the court's view. Some sex-positive feminists criticized Dworkin's views as censorious and as denying women's agency or choice in sexual relationships, leading to the so-called feminist sex wars.
Her book Intercourse, which addresses the role of sexual intercourse in society, has been interpreted as opposing all heterosexual intercourse, but Dworkin said it does not and that what she was against was male domination by intercourse. Some critics of Dworkin accused her of supporting incest, and she sued for defamation, but a court did not forbid the criticism. She subsequently wrote much in opposition to incest. She wrote some fiction, some of which was held for a time by Canadian customs authorities before it was released, giving rise to a controversy over whether her support for antipornography law had led to the seizure of her own work. When she said she was drugged and raped in a hotel in 1999, controversy over the truth of the allegations followed. In her later years, she suffered from severe osteoarthritis, which limited her mobility. She died of acute myocarditis at the age of 58.

Catharine Alice MacKinnon (born October 7, 1946) is an American radical feminist legal scholar. She is the Elizabeth A. Long Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, where she has been tenured since 1990, and the James Barr Ames Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. From 2008 to 2012, she was the special gender adviser to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.[1][2]
As an expert on international law, constitutional law, political and legal theory, and jurisprudence, MacKinnon focuses on women's rights and sexual abuse and exploitation, including sexual harassment, rape, prostitution, sex trafficking and pornography. She was among the first to argue that pornography is a civil rights violation, and that sexual harassment in education and employment constitutes sex discrimination.[1][3]
MacKinnon is the author of over a dozen books, including Sexual Harassment of Working Women (1979);[4]Feminism Unmodified (1987), described as "one of the most widely cited books on law in the English language";[5]Toward a Feminist Theory of the State (1989); Only Words (1993); a casebook, Sex Equality (2001 and 2007); Women's Lives, Men's Laws (2005); and Butterfly Politics (2017).

Susannah Bright, also known as Susie Sexpert (born March 25, 1958), is an American feminist, author, journalist, critic, editor, publisher, producer, and performer, often on the subject of sexual politics and sexuality.[1]
She is one of the first writers/activists referred to as a sex-positive feminist.[2] Her papers are part of the Human Sexuality Collection at Cornell University Library along with the archives of On Our Backs.

Valerie Jean Solanas (April 9, 1936 – April 25, 1988) was an American radical feminist and author best known for writing the SCUM Manifesto, which she self-published in 1967, and attempting to murder Andy Warhol in 1968.
Solanas had a turbulent childhood. She said her father regularly sexually abused her and she had a volatile relationship with her mother and stepfather after her parents' divorce. She was sent to live with her grandparents but ran away after being physically abused by her alcoholic grandfather. Solanas came out as a lesbian in the 1950s. After graduating with a degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, Solanas relocated to Berkeley, California, where she began writing her most notable work, the SCUM Manifesto, which urged women to "overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and eliminate the male sex".[1][2]
Solanas moved to New York City in the mid-1960s. She met pop artist Andy Warhol and asked him to produce her play Up Your Ass. She gave him her script, which she later accused him of losing or stealing. After Solanas demanded financial compensation for the lost script, Warhol hired her to perform in his film, I, a Man, paying her $25. In 1967, Solanas began self-publishing the SCUM Manifesto. Olympia Press owner Maurice Girodias offered to publish Solanas's future writings, and she understood the contract to mean that Girodias would own her writing. Convinced that Girodias and Warhol were conspiring to steal her work, Solanas purchased a gun in early 1968.
On June 3, 1968, she went to The Factory, where she found Warhol. She shot at Warhol three times, the first two shots missing and the third wounding Warhol. She also shot art critic Mario Amaya and attempted to shoot Warhol's manager, Fred Hughes, point blank, but the gun jammed. Solanas then turned herself in to the police. She was charged with attempted murder, assault, and illegal possession of a gun. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and pleaded guilty to "reckless assault with intent to harm", serving a three-year prison sentence, including treatment in a psychiatric hospital. After her release, she continued to promote the SCUM Manifesto. She died in 1988 of pneumonia in San Francisco.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_Solanas
The Sisterhood is not in total alignment with the philosophies/ideologies of these six women. In fact a few of them might reject SH in whole or in part. But without their work, SH would not, likely could not, exist.

Ectogenesis: 5 Positive and Negative Reproduction Effects

This was something I sketched out quite a long time ago, I've been going though some old stuff I had started on but never finished, I decided to just go with whatever was already on the canvas. I had already done sketches and had the names, I don't remember how I came up with the names, I think most of them were kind of random, but I must of been planning something because I apparently named that one guy after the Greek God of Doom? (super edgy, also doesn't make much sense, because I decided all these characters live on a different planet) but anyways, I just went with what I already had and decided to make him somewhat of a villain, I think that may have been what I was planning anyways.
So they live on a planet that's a lot bigger than Earth, there's parts of it that are way more advanced than other parts, mostly because the distance between locations is so big that most major civilizations have never interacted. In general the planet is mostly a fantasy setting, with lots of different species and races. There are many locations that are still unexplored and have not been settled.
MOROS used to be the villain, until he lost his memory(sort of cliche) I haven't completely sorted out his backstory. He came to be when some evil wizards or something were attempting some kind of spell, they were using dark magic to do some kind of generic evil wizard stuff. (ok so I decided the spell was to summon some kind of dark god or deity, to ask for power) The spell involved a bird and some other ingredients, but it didn't go as planed and the result ended up taking the form of this little bird kid. (the god gave them power in the form of Moros who would be very powerful with magic, but the wizards didn't realize that)So basically Moros used to be a bird. The wizards used him as a servant and treated him terribly, they also used to test other spells on him throughout the years. He stopped aging around 18 and is somewhat immortal, the wizards also live for many years longer than humans, they use dark magic to prolong their lives. They kept him locked in a bird cage a lot, but he learned how to sneak out and would read all the spell books while the wizards weren't around. (they live on a small island, in a building surrounded by enchantments he can't escape from even if he escaped the cage) He taught himself how to do magic, and became a master at it. He eventually destroyed to wizards and decided to take his revenge out on the world. He pretty much just became super edgy. He summoned all sorts of dark creatures to be his minions and went about destroying lands and such. In his downtime he would use magic disguise himself as a human teen, and hang around in human villages to internally laugh at their miserable lives. Something ends up happening while he's in this disguise (I never decided what) and he is knocked out and loses his memory. He wakes up in a village having no idea who he is. He meets up with the rest of the characters at some point and they become friends and he grows as a person. Then some drama goes down when he eventually realizes who he is. (the group of characters were actually on a journey to defeat him, some of them weren't at first but joined up with the ones who were) Then he has an identity crisis. He likes who he's grown to be, and cares about his new friends, but then has to struggle with how he used to be. As his old self he was kind of a cliche evil villain, he hated the world for causing him so much pain and only really thought about causing others as much pain as he had felt, he was just a huge edgelord. After he loses his memory he is able to change and grow as a person. He starts out shy and unsure of himself. He becomes more confident once he makes friends. He learns he knows how to do magic, and decides he wants to use it to help defeat the evil that is plaguing the world. (ironic haha)
ADMA is 19 years old and TIKKI is 18. They are orphans that live in a village that worship the sun and moon. Hundreds of years ago some sort of cosmic force or spirits of the sun and moon or some kind of magical whatever granted two people of their village powers, one of the sun and one of the moon. When they died two new people in the village were granted that power. These people would use their power to protect the village. As the years went on the cycle continued. The power is always granted to someone between the ages of 5 to 20. So a lot of the kids in the village would start training in case they ended up being the ones to receive it. If they weren't they would still be able to protect they village with their skills. Adma and Tikki grew up together in an orphanage, it was always Tikki's dream to be granted the powers of the moon(I have no idea what these powers are) She self proclaimed herself The Moon Goddess Tikki and always wears a moon necklace Adma made for her when they were kids. Even though she wanted the moon powers, she never took her training seriously and always slacked off, she didn't think a Moon Goddess should need to learn how to use her own powers. While Adma spent her time training in case she received powers, she also just wanted to protect the village. The current moon and sun power holders, were off fighting Moros's(character from the original pic) armies. The moon one was killed and Tikki ended up receiving the moon powers (and a bit of an ego) Adma is quite jealous because she was the one who put in all the hard work while Tikki just slacked off all the time. Tikki is sent off to find the current sun power holder and Adma goes with her. They eventually meet up with the other characters. The sun power holder is killed during this time and Adma inherits the sun powers. Her and Tikki have a falling out and fight a bit. But eventually make up and try to be friends again.
EDIN is 16 years old, his parents where the king and queen of a kingdom of elves. When Moros(character from the original pic) first started attacking villages, Edin was a baby, many of the elves in the kingdom fled, but his parents and their army decided to fight back. They sent Edin to a human village far away from anything that was happening, they wanted to make sure the heir to their kingdom was kept safe. The village they send him too is one they were in good relations with. He lives on a farm with his adoptive parents and siblings, he doesn't know he's a prince, he just knows his parents went to fight a war with the other elves. Years pass with no news from his parents or news about the war they were fighting. Moros's armies eventually reach his village. His family live near a mountain and there are few passage ways there that can be used to escape. His adoptive parents tell him about his parents being royalty and give him a map to where their kingdom used to be. They also give him some money his elf parents had left for him. They fight off Moros's forces long enough for the kids to escape but end up dying. Edin and his siblings escape through the mountain, and travel for a while to the next village, there they use the money to find someone with a horse and carriage to take them to the farthest village they know of. Once there his sister decides to stay there with their younger brother while Edin sets off to find out what happened to his parents. Edin is very nervous, and easily stressed out. He had never left the village he grew up in so being out in the world terrifies him, he misses his parents and siblings, every thing that happened to him recently made him a nervous wreck. I never actually named either of his sets of parents or his siblings. His sister is very tomboyish and rebellious and is brother is a very happy and energetic kid. His elf parents left money and clothes for him to wear as he grows up with his human parents.
GINA is 14 years old, her mother is a giant and her father a human blacksmith. Giants are mostly a nomadic race, they travel from place to place, they settle in some places for maybe a few years at a time. Her parents met when her mother's tribe was settled near her father's town for a while. They fell in love and had her, a lot of the humans are a bit racist against the giants, they think of them as dumb and uncivilized (even thought it's untrue) while they tolerate them living nearby they don't like it. They don't like them hunting the animals in the area because they eat quite a bit more than humans and there are less for the humans to hunt. When it came time for the giants to continue their travels, the villagers would not allow her mother to stay, so Gina was left to be raised by her father. Her father is a skilled blacksmith and taught Gina everything he knows. He ends up dying in some kind of accident( I never decided what) and Gina leaves the village to search for her mother. She eventually runs into the other characters. Gina has a pair of enchanted gloves she made herself, she embedded them with some kind of magical firestone. They shoot out fire when she punches(but only if she wants them to, they don't activate untended) it's dangerous to be traveling alone, so she uses them to fight with. I added some more elemental stones, she has a few different bands with different elemental stones which she can switch out. She carries them in her bag. Elemental stones are magical stones that are formed during strong natural weather events and such. A lighting stone is sometimes formed when lighting strikes a tree, the magical energy during this somehow causes the stone to form or grow (i don't know just MAGIC) Fire stones sometimes form during forest fires. Water stones(really need a new name for that) are formed after a terrible flood. They are essentially just magical rocks that are the concentrated energy of those events. When refined down and combined with runes a person is able to wield them as a weapon. She has a pet named Birdy ( she named to when she was very little) She has a cheerful, good natured personality, she is kind of awkward and also very determined.
NALO is 17 years old. She comes from a tribe that is pretty much a bunch of hippies, they are all pretty chill and never seem to worry about anything. Her tribe worships some kind of goddess of peace and protection or something, they believe she protects them from harm. While there are deities and such in their world (i haven't really worked out how all of that works) this particular goddess isn't real, so she can't actually protect them form anything. I'm not actually sure how they started worshiping her. Anyways, Nalo is an inventor, she wants to make a difference in to world. She can't do magic but she does study science and magic and how they relate. (I really haven't worked out many details of her character yet, I don't even know what her goggles do, I just thought they looked cool, I haven't worked out all the details of how magic works in this world) She realizes many nearby villages are being destroyed by the forces of evil. Her village doesn't seem to be worried since they think their goddess will protect them, but she decides to set out and find help or find a way to defeat the attacking forces or protect her village. She eventually meets up with the other characters Nalo is kind of quiet, she doesn't say much unless it's about something she's really interested in, and then it's hard to get her to stop talking. She can be a bit of a know it all when it comes to something she thinks she knows a lot about. She uses her throwing knives to fight with.
RED is a robot from a huge island in the middle of nowhere. It is way more advanced than the rest of the world. The people there mostly don't interact with the rest of the world, but they do keep tabs on them. When they see the havoc Moros (character from original pic) is wrecking they decide to send out a highly advanced assassin robot to kill him. Red meets the other characters and joins them, and ends up developing self awareness and becomes friends with them. Red's cloak can change colors and camouflage itself. He can also fire lasers. His joints work kind of like magnets, I'm not really sure how they work, but a combination of magic and science or something. He can detach parts and connect them to other joints, and can move his fingers to different hands, he can connect all his arms together for super long arms, and can do the same with his legs.
The last picture I mentioned in Nalo’s description that her village worshiped some sort of goddess of peace and protection or something. And while there are deities and such in their world that this particular goddess didn't exist.
This character was a powerful wizard that lived in Nalo's village over a thousand years ago, she protected their village and helped keep peace in the area. A statue was built in her honor in the center of the village, and her story and legend were passed down long after her death. But, somehow over the years the story got changed to where she was a goddess instead of a wizard and the people began to worship her. Believing worshiping this goddess will protect their village from any serious harm. But it won't because she wasn't a goddess and has been dead for hundreds of years. I haven't named her yet. There are different kinds of wizards in their world, wizards like this one, with a natural talent for magic who study and work hard to become stronger. Most people have to be born with magic to do it. Some of those who aren't use dark magic or something. (I haven't really worked out all the details of how it works.)

Hot In Cleveland
Greetings to literally no one! Hopefully that will change....
I’ve had this account for a while now and I’ve finally thought about what I want to use it for.
Starting today, this will be a literary analysis of some of the entertainment media I have consumed over the years. Why you ask? Hmmmm, that’ll be for a later post. I hope that you enjoy reading this!
WARNING: THESE POSTS WILL UNASHAMEDLY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
Today, we’ll begin with a sitcom that’s very close to my heart - Hot In Cleveland
[cue title music - ba ba ba baaaa... ba ba baaa... dwing dwing HEY!]
PREMISE
Hot in Cleveland first premiered in 2010 on TV Land as their first ever original production. Up until that point, the network was well known for airing reruns of previously ended shows, such as The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls. One of the producers of the show was Sean Hayes of Will & Grace fame.
The show revolves around three middle-aged women bound for Paris to forget their troubles of broken hearts and struggling careers when their plane makes a emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio. Deciding to explore the city, they find it a more compassionate and welcoming than the glamorous, youth obsessed Los Angeles and decide to relocate there. When they rent a house, they find it comes with a decidedly snarky housekeeper.
CAST & CHARACTERS
Valerie Bertinelli as Melanie Moretti - a recently divorced one-time author, she has known very little beyond her roles as mother and wife. She tends to be very optimistic and romantic, often to the annoyance of her friends. Out of the younger trio, she takes the most to Cleveland and tries new things to broaden her horizons. She is the most compassionate out of the three, often being the glue that binds them together. Though she’s a very nice character to watch, she lacks true grit and comes off as a pushover at times. I don’t know much about Valerie’s work before the show, but she does do quite well, with her natural warmth and friendliness coming through.
Wendie Malick as Victoria Chase - an ambitious but ditzy soap opera actress, she has just had her show cancelled and falls into despair at not being in the public eye anymore. Self-centered and willing to do almost anything, Victoria is the least enthusiastic about moving to Cleveland due to the lack of botox and paparazzi among other things. Over time, she takes on various projects to try and revive her career, resulting in an Emmy & Oscar win. Wendie Malick is best known for her role on Just Shoot Me as well as her voice acting in various shows and movies, such as The Emperor’s New Groove and BoJack Horseman. She’s an absolute delight to watch here, completely immersing herself in the role and surrendering to Victoria’s insanity.
Jane Leeves as Rejoyla ‘Joy’ Scroggs - a beautician with a business that’s starting to fail, Joy’s real problem is being unlucky in love. From being abandoned by her teenage sweetheart when she fell pregnant by him, to being left at the altar on her wedding day, Joy’s endless parade of bad luck has left her cynical and just a tad yandere for any man who dares cross her (watch out boys...). She’s neutral to Cleveland, but secretly longs for romance and eventually settling down to start a family. Jane is best known for her work on Fraiser. She’s initially a bit frigid over the first two seasons but warms up to the role as she gains more prominence in the show over the later seasons.
Betty White as Elka Ostrovsky - an escapee from WWII Poland, she is a widow who lives in the house as a caretaker. Though she finds the LA trio’s obsession with glitz and glamour very strange, she quickly makes friends with them to varying degrees, often dispensing advice and acting as a voice of reason when the others get a bit too crazy or feel despondent. She is very proud of Cleveland, eventually becoming its mayor and is not averse to doing things outside of the law. Betty White has a career in television spanning over 80 years. She was initially only supposed to appear in the pilot episode but the audience response was quite positive so the producers upgraded her to series regular.
STRUCTURE, WRITING & DEVELOPMENT
The series plays out as a typical slice-of-life sitcom. The idea of older women living together and going through life isn’t new - think Golden Girls in the modern era and you pretty much have the gist of the show. However, is that such a bad thing? I think every TV era needs a show that focuses on the challenges one faces as the march of time proceeds; something that feels comfortable without pushing the boundaries too much and HiC was that for a generation who missed out on Betty White’s previous hit show. It wasn’t cerebral watching and it didn’t need to be.
In line with this, many of the plots are taken out from well known tropes that have developed over the years. Love triangles, a vapid rivalry in Hollywood, false pregnancies and lost loves returning all play part in the show’s six season run, edited and polished for character context. This is a big part of why the show felt so familiar to many viewers. Script structures followed one of three methods:
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1 whilst C & D take part in subplot 2 - this proves most effective for humor, balancing out the plot and giving each character something to work with
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1, C in subplot 2 and D in subplot 3 - this proves most effective for character development but can feel too scattered at times
Characters A, B, C & D take part in the main plot - this is most effective for plot lines, usually occurring at season premieres or finales
In terms of character development, the main trio of ladies find fulfillment in each other’s status. I’ll explain:
Melanie was an author but didn’t really have much experience in the working world, choosing instead to derive her satisfaction from being a mother and a wife. Now that her marriage is over and her kids are in college, she feels lost and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Over the course of the show, she has a series of meaningful relationships but develops the most in her career;becoming a column writer, a public relations assistant, a radio show host and a restaurant manager. This is what Victoria was trying to achieve at the beginning of the show.
Victoria is an out of work actress who has to resort to all sorts of tricks to get back into the public eye. Her approach is hit and miss, but she eventually goes on to win an Emmy and an Oscar, along with some work in critically acclaimed stage plays and a brief period as a news reporter. Despite this, she finds more satisfaction in her love life (despite being married EIGHT times!), eventually marrying her one true love at the end of the series. This is what Joy was trying to achieve at the start.
Joy is struggling as a beautician who looks for love in handsome men and one night stands, but never seems to catch a break. Her love life goes from bad to worse and her relationships fail due to a combination of her own issues with trust and the fact that the men she loves aren’t that great to begin with. She eventually puts her cynicism and stalking tendencies (I told you to watch out for her!) to good use, studying criminology and becoming a private detective. She also reconnects with her son that she gave up for adoption and gleefully accepts when she finds out that she’s a grandmother. Long story short, she’s looking for stability and finds it in the most unlikely man, becoming a wife and a mother at the end of the show. This is what Melanie was looking for at the start of the show.
Over the first three seasons, a heavy emphasis is placed on Elka due to the show trying to capitalize on Betty White’s resurgence in popularity at the time. This is in spite of the fact that Elka kind of feels like a lost puzzle piece. She doesn’t really fit in to the whole cohesiveness of the other three characters. This is changed in season 4, when the character of Mamie Sue (played by Georgia Engel, Betty’s costar from The Mary Tyler Moore Show) is promoted to a recurring character. It not only gives a nice chemistry to a previously ill fitting character, it creates a parallel with the LA trio: Mamie Sue is a combination of Victoria’s airheadedness and Melanie’s kindness to Joy’s cynicism found in Elka.
The show starts off quite shakily, despite its hype, but takes a turn for the better around the fourth season. The frivolous story lines from earlier episodes are eschewed for more long term plots with more emotional impact. Themes of loneliness, love at middle age and returning to correct past regrets are explored quite deeply. The show also loses some of the LA stereotypes as it goes on.
Some really big names are booked as guest stars, some notable ones being:
Susan Lucci as a parody of herself, being Victoria’s arch-nemesis
Joe Jonas as Will, Melanie’s son
Craig Ferguson as Simon, Joy’s first love and babydaddy
Jon Lovitz as Artie Firestone, an eccentric billionaire who takes an interest in Joy
Heather Locklear as Chloe, one of Melanie’s bosses at her PR job
The entire cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as G.L.O.B. (Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling)
Alan Dale as Sir Emmet Lawson, a renowned actor and Victoria’s sixth husband
Rick Springfield as a parody of himself
BULLSEYES & IMPROVEMENTS
What the show gets right:
Exploring the crossroads many women face at middle age, in terms of the main aspects of life: family, love & career
Great acting, especially in the later seasons
Wendie Malick - she deserved an Emmy nomination for her acting here
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Emmy, Victoria’s eldest daughter. Seriously, watch her episodes and tell me they aren’t funny
The general lack of pressure - you don’t need much attention to cycle in and out of the show, it’s easy watching
The consistency and plot development post season 3
What I think should be improved upon:
Melanie can be TOO nice, something that’s actually picked upon by other characters. Her cancer subplot was a nice opportunity to get some grit, but most of it was just by the way and not fully delved into
Victoria’s job as a news reporter was forgotten as soon as she landed a part in a Woody Allen movie. It would have been nice for her to be in that occupation a bit more or go back to it after her Oscar win and give her a chance to be on the other side of fame
Elka’s love life - every boyfriend seems to be a copy of the other and there are way too many of them
CULTURAL & PERSONAL IMPACT
This article from the A.V. Club goes into detail about the show and I have to say, I agree with it wholeheartedly agree. HiC was a reminder of what was before the more intellectual comedies came along. It shamelessly pandered to an older generation who wanted something familiar in an ever changing landscape. The fact that it didn’t take many risks in its approach was a risk in itself. It was clearly one that paid off, given the six season run. It wasn’t a darling of the critics, but it didn’t need to be. This was a show that could be watched to generate a few laughs without the need for in depth discussion with a coworker in the break room the next day.
A few years after the show’s cancellation, Valerie Bertinelli expressed her anger at TV Land for the decision, calling it sexist. I can’t really comment on that, given that I’m not too familiar with TV Land’s other work, but I will say that HiC did what it had to do. Six seasons in an age where you’re lucky to get more than three is amazing. The plot lines tied up quite nicely at the end and in the end, that’s all that everyone wanted.
Personally, I watched this show at two very difficult times in my life. The first was at college during my final year, when deadlines loomed and twisted my stomach in anxiety. The second was a few months ago when I had quit my job and needed something to distract me from the depression. On both occasions, this show has really made me laugh and fall in love with its simplicity. It’s undemanding and solid, just what I need to get through a trying period.
