You know what, Tommy will be alright.

Tommy will go home and sit in the darkness of his living room and stare at nothing for a while. Tommy will hold back his tears and feel numb for a while.

And then Tommy will drag his ass to the 217 again in the morning. Tommy may not fly helicopters for a while for being too sleep deprived in despair, but eventually he will fly again. Tommy will touch the sky again.

Tommy will eventually start enjoying Muay Thai again even if it is without his new best friend. It will hurt for a while to not have a partner anymore but he will enjoy it again.

Tommy will also start going to basketball court again, fly to Vegas to watch sold out fights. Tommy will still have those friends who give him those tickets. Tommy will still have his coworkers who will probably see him sitting alone without his boyfriend and invite him to hangout.

Tommy will still have those bars he frequents to and waiters there who eventually started caring about their older gay patron who seems a little sad lately.

Tommy will eventually meet someone, or several someones who he will call his family. Tommy will eventually find people who don't give up on him the moment he runs, but chases behind him to bring him back.

Tommy will eventually see the clouds of fear, fear of being left alone fade away slowly. Tommy will eventually smile again. And he will pick himself up and dust himself and be upright like he has done thousands of times already. But Tommy will eventually feel a little brighter and lighter.

Tommy had breakups before. Tommy will have breakups again. But it will not break him.

Thomas Kinard, Firefighter Pilot, Muay Thai enthusiast, will be alright.

His heart may be a little more charred, a little more scarred, but it will still be whole. It may take a little while, but he will get there eventually like he always does. And this time he will get there the way he deserves to be.

Buck prioritizing his relationship isn’t weird or out of character. "He should’ve been with Bobby." Bobby was with his wife and his kids, Buck didn’t need to be there. "It didn’t make sense for—" It didn’t make sense to you, but what you would have done isn’t important because none of these characters are self inserts. "Tommy’s daddy kink topic was weird and came out of nowhere." It was initiated by Buck. They are two consenting romantically involved adult men who are both bonding and showing attraction towards one another in an intimate space. There’s absolutely nothing weird, misplaced, or inappropriate about that. Again, these characters are not self-inserts. What you would have said or done doesn’t matter. Both characters expressed how they felt in the moment on screen, so the narrative that one of them was even slightly uncomfortable at any point is untrue.

So, as promised, I'm gifing the scene that made me believe that Tommy was already in love with Buck. He knows it's too soon but he can't help it.

So during the dinner scene, Buck talks about how Bobby is like a father to him, and then Tommy start opening up too. He starts talking about his complicated relationship with his father.

And the moment Tommy starts talking, Buck "drops everything" to listen to Tommy (metaphorically but also literally because he immediately dropped the cutlery he was holding to give Tommy his full attention):

Then he listens to Tommy very carefully, with a little bit of concern until Tommy cracks a joke and Buck goes back to smiling.

I'm not sure Tommy has ever been with someone like Buck, who looks at him like that, who's so attentive, listens to him carefully and makes him feel like he's a priority.

Tommy is comfortable with Buck and can be open him and share his vulnerable side (how he was jealous of the 118, how he wasn't always out and was lying to himself, and here, his relationship with his father).

I think Tommy already has strong feelings for Buck and feels so good with him and comfortable and he trusts Buck and Buck keeps proving to him that he's right.

it is my firm belief that Tommy Kinard appears cool because people don't try to know him better, they are happy being casual friends and Tommy keeps these friends at arm's length because he doesn't know if he can be that open with them. they like him for what he gives to them, his time or the perks etc, and he's always ready to help, but Tommy probably isn't good at asking for more either

i hope his Evan will give him so much love and security that Tommy learns to be selfish and he learns to want to keep Evan as his forever and ever

so for the tuesday tidbit @tiltingheartand tagged me in, this is it: im breaking the rules a bit by posting a tommy headcanon

tommy can fly anything that he can pilot from the inside

buck finds out while they're in bed, enjoying the after-afterglow. he's got his phone out, scrolling through wikipedia and he's kinda teasing, kinda flirting, kinda just running his mouth, naming different vehicles that can be flown

and tommy goes: "yeah, i could fly that" every time. and maybe even: "flown that"

and thus, buck unwittingly talks himself into showing his competence kink and going a second round, because at some point, the idea that his hot pilot boyfriend can control and maneuver those kind of behemoths through the sky????

maybe he whimpers a little bit when tommy confirms the blimp

(it later transpires, perhaps at denny's bday party, that tommy cannot fly a drone. to great comedic results. he promises to buy denny a new one)

Several Sentence Sunday

Okay, so I was tagged by @perfectlysunny02 and @do-androids-dream-ao3acc for this and because this snippet is 😂 more than a few sentences, I'll put the tagging for this up here - anyone who wants to do Several Sentences Sunday, just say I tagged you.

This is for a fic idea that I just thought of on a walk? It's basically a Teacher AU. Sort of. Buck is a second grade teacher, who befriended Eddie when Chris was in his class seven years ago. Tommy is still a Firefighter Pilot, but he and his best friend Natalia Dollenmeyer decided to have a kid together fourteen years ago. They co-parent and have a kid Chris' age named Natalia (she goes by Nat or Junior). Tommy met Eddie on a call and they became fast friends. Eddie learns that Nat has CP (I'm basing Nat a bit off of famous wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft) and recommends the school that Chris goes to. Natalia and Tommy agree the school will be good for Nat and enroll her there, which is where Tommy has his meet-cute with Evan. Enjoy! 🥰

“We’re lost,” said Nat, “Aren’t we?”

Tommy was lost.

Absolutely lost.

“We’re not lost,” Tommy lied as he stared hopelessly around the halls, “We’re just – turned around a bit.”

Tommy could navigate the skies like the back of his hand, but the moment he touched the ground, all that sense of direction disappeared like a mirage in a desert. He had visited this school three times before this. First when he, Natalia, and Nat went on the tour of the grounds. Second when he had dropped Nat off to take the entrance exam. Third for the parent meeting. He had been shown this school on three separate occasions.

And he didn’t know where the fuck he was.

Nat laughed.

“Dad, let’s ask for directions,” said Nat, “What do you always say?”

Tommy.

Sighed.

“When you don’t know where you’re going, it’s okay to ask for directions,” said Tommy back to his child.

“Not hard to admit,” said Nat, and Tommy liked that he had at least taught her that.

That it was okay to ask for help. It took so long for Tommy to teach himself that. It was good that she understood that now as Nat wheeled herself over to the first new adult she saw. She pulled up in front of him, waving her hand to get his attention.

“Hi,” she said, her smile all charm, “My name’s Natalia, but I go by Nat. or Junior. But Nat works just fine. Over there is my dad. Can you show us where Ms. Flores’ room is?”

And.

Oh god, he was hot.

Fuck, the man was handsome. He had these wonderful dirty blond curls. He was wearing this dapper green sweater. And he had this distinctive birthmark that peppered right on the edge of his eyebrow. He seemed amused, if not delighted by how friendly Nat was.

“You are, are you?” asked the man, grinning as he –

He.

Looked.

Tommy’s.

Way.

And Tommy felt his heart skip a beat. He did his best not to think about that as he walked over to the man and said a little smoother than he felt, “Yes. I’m her dad. Tommy Kinard. A pleasure to meet you.”

Should Tommy be introducing himself? He was only asking for directions. All the same, he found himself extending his hand and – and the man shook it.

“E – Evan Buckley,” said the man, said Evan, as he kept shaking Tommy’s hand, “I’m a second grade teacher here. Not. Wandering the halls aimlessly or something. Not sure why I said it like that.”

Huh.

That name sounded familiar. Though. Tommy wasn’t really thinking about that.

Tommy laughed.

“I kind of assumed you were a teacher, but thanks for the clarification,” laughed Tommy, and why was Tommy still shaking this man’s hand, “Nice to know you’re not just aimlessly wandering the halls.”

“Yeah. That would be weird,” said Evan, still shaking Tommy’s hand, “Red flags there.”

“Wait. Second grade? We’re not even on the right side of the school, Dad,” said Nat, which reminded Tommy to actually stop shaking this man’s hand.

“Yeah. You need to go to the east side of the school. It’s the big, sort of mismatched building that looks recently built. Ms. Flores is, uh – she’s freshman year, so she should be on the first floor. I’ll show you where it is,” explained Evan as he walked them out of the building they were in and toward the complete opposite side of the school’s campus, “She’s great. All the high school teachers are amazing, but she’s a fantastic English teacher. She runs this book club I’m in. She really makes you think.”

“She does, huh? I know Nat’s mom met her during a separate tour they did without me for the athletics at the school. Nat – Nat came here partially because there’s an actual wheelchair racing team and a coach here,” explained Tommy.

“Not your wife? Her mom?” asked Evan who seemed to perk up, and – and.

Huh.

“Not – not that I mean to pry, I’m sorry,” continued Evan, laughing nervously.

“No, we’re, uh. We’re coparents. We kind of decided at the same time that we wanted a kid and, we, uh. Had one together as friends. And we ended up with the best, most active kid in the world,” explained Tommy, which.

He knew people weren’t always so accepting of their situation. They barely got past the parent interview. People didn’t tend to get why a gay man and a bi woman simply decided to be parents together.

But.

They had.

And it had been all the better for them both.

“She’s also going to try out for seated discus,” gushed Tommy, “She made regionals in seated discus last year. You should have seen her.”

“Dad. You don’t need to give him our life story. I don’t know if I’ll even make either of those teams,” said Nat.

“You’re making it. I know you will,” beamed Tommy, “We’re also partially here because a friend of mine suggested this school. His kid loves it here, so we thought it could be a good fit.”

“Chris is going to be in my class, actually,” said Nat excitedly as Nat pressed the button to open the door, “Apparently, he’s a cool kid, so I have like an automatic cool kid position.”

“Just use that power responsibly,” said Tommy as they walked in.

“I make no promises,” said Nat as she looked down at her schedule on her phone, “Room E105… there.”

She pointed to the room with the number above it.

“I’ll see you later, Dad. Thanks for helping us, Mr. Buckley,” said Nat as she sped to the classroom and turned inside, yelling, “Chris! My guy! How was summer in Texas?”

“Confident kid,” Evan said.

“She is. People say she gets it from me, but I think she gets it from her mom,” gushed Tommy, because he liked to brag about Nat.

“I don’t know. You seem pretty confident yourself,” said Evan, smiling at Tommy.

And.

Touching Tommy’s shoulder.

And.

Was – was this a moment? Was Tommy having a moment with this random teacher he just met?

Then.

The bell rang.

And.

Evan was still smiling at him; still touching Tommy’s shoulder.

“Do you not have a class to teach right now?” asked Tommy curiously.

“Shi – shoot. Right. Bell. Uh. Nice to meet you, Tommy,” said Evan as he rushed out of the building.

“Nice to meet you too,” said Tommy, waving at Evan as he ran out of the doors.

yall don’t know how badly i need buck to swoon over tommy these next few episodes, even if we don’t get an actual scene with tommy - i need him to be all blushy and smiley over his hot firefighter pilot boyfriend and the 118 is teasing him over it. just need at least ONE scene of it before we see tommy again and i’ll be the happiest person ever

I really hate to be the bad news bear, but Tommy didn't fly that plane in 2x14, I've written a piece about that C-130 belonging to CAL FIRE a couple of months back. To make up for it, and continuing on the topic about helicopter vs airplane pilots yesterday, here's some headcanon:

Tommy dated a CAL FIRE air tanker pilot.

He's fighting a particularly bad wildfire, when the fuel in his helicopter runs critically low, he has to land the bird at a nearby CAL FIRE facility, and there he meets his C-130 pilot.

Mr. CAL FIRE shares Tommy's passion in flying, they have that same sparkle in their eyes when they look to the sky. But unlike Tommy, who has to observe his surroundings and look down for a place to safely land at all times, Mr. CAL FIRE always look up and ahead to the future. He's bright, funny, kind, optimistic, always ready for the next adventure. Being with him feels like the September sun gently hitting Tommy's face.

Tommy has been playing the field, experimenting, since coming out some time ago. While all that was fun, he can't help but feel unfulfilled and lonely, when he comes home to an empty bed after a brutal shift. He wants to settle down with someone, and this time he can really see a future with Mr. CAL FIRE.

But the reality is, firefighting pilots work long, unconventional hours. Tommy works a traditional 24/48 schedule, but Mr. CAL FIRE works 10 days on 5 days off during wildfire seasons. They don't get to see each other often, and when they do, Tommy is content with relaxing and healing from his previous shifts with the man he loves, but Mr. CAL FIRE always has that itch to explore the world, to go on an adventure. Then they start drifting apart, loneliness starts growing again in Tommy's heart, while Mr. CAL FIRE feels suffocated, tied down.

One day, Tommy gets that same warm feeling of sun shinning on his face again. Only this time, he's at the airport, watching Mr. CAL FIRE fly away into the sky. He realizes it's time to let him go, to let each other go.

It hurts to end things with him, but Tommy also feels relieved. He likes guys who are basically sunshine personified, but maybe they're not what Tommy needs in his life, maybe they don't need Tommy in their lives, dragging them down.

Then one day, his old colleague at the 118 asks him to steal a helicopter and fly into a hurricane in the middle of the night, and Evan Buckley walks into Harbor station...

Oh I know what's the lightly angsty thing that could happen for Buck and Tommy to cause a teeny bit of friction: the LAFD CALENDAR

Buck thinks Tommy is hot and it's insane he has not been in any of the calendars so he wants Tommy to be in the LAFD calendar, Tommy's like I don't wanna be in it to be ogled at, but Buck really wants to show off his boyfriend, and they have a disagreement about what it means to be in a Hot Men calendar

In the end Buck gets a Hot Firefighter Pilot calendar that's all Tommy, January to December, and Tommy gets a full boudoir photoshoot of his boyfriend that tragically is not shown onscreen, everyone (except the viewers craving the boudoir shots) wins
