Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
Tumblr media
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a humble first chapter with lots of charm. What it does well, it gets so right you can’t help falling under its spell. Every time I see this adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novel, I like it a little more.
Orphaned Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) lives with his cruel aunt (Fiona Shaw) and uncle (Richard Griffiths), who spoil their son Dudley (Harry Melling) and treat him like a pest. Everything changes when Harry receives an acceptance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Aided by the gentle half-giant Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), he learns all about potion-making, wand-waving, ghosts, enchantments. But Hogwarts isn't all wonder. When Harry and his best friend (Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) begin suspecting that their Potions teacher (Alan Rickman as Severus Snape) is after a mysterious artifact hidden deep inside the school, they take it upon themselves to stop him.
This film covers a lot of material. First, we learn about Harry’s Cinderella-like life in the "Muggle" world, then there’s Hogwarts and the secretive people associated with it, the friends he makes at school, and finally the whole plot about that titular Philosopher’s stone. As such, the story moves quickly, maybe a little bit too fast. At the same time, the pace ensures young audiences will never be bored. Director Chris Columbus, the special effects people, the seasoned actors, along with juniors Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint bring the magic of the novel to life. This film is aimed towards children and they'll go crazy for it. As an adult, you can see the seeds being sown for bigger, more mature adventures and it’s fun to watch, knowing full well this was just the beginning of something much bigger. You’ll also get a kick out of the veteran actors. Many of them will be back in the future, and that’s something to get excited about.
I was ready to look past dated special effects and performances that were less-than-stellar from the child actors. Indeed, some of the broomstick flying scenes are a little rough around the edges but before you can raise your complaint, we've moved onto something else. For the most part, practical effects are used whenever possible (the goblins inside the Wizarding Bank are a great example). Unless some cynical jerk isolates clips and shows them to you, you're unlikely to wince and for 2001, the visuals are good. The same applies to the performances. Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson grew into their roles over the years and they’re decent here. The story does a lot of the heavy lifting and when it’s set in a world that’s as rich as this one that goes a long way.
You’ve got a lot of memorable moments throughout, an engaging mystery set in an exciting world, populated likeable, timeless characters. Most important is the enthusiasm radiating from everyone. More than convincing special effects, strong performances, or a masterfully penned script, what’s most important about a film is how it makes you feel. This magical tale will put twinkles back in your eyes and make you remember what it was like when you were a kid.
At points, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone feels like it should’ve been a mini-series instead of a film. Generally, it also sticks a bit too close to the novel. With that said, if that’s what you want to see, that’s what you get. As an adaptation, it will please the fans. You're certain to be humming the memorable score by John Williams on the way out. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a film that will stand the test of time. (On DVD, December 16, 2016)

fiona shaw’s acting is just incredible. every scene she’s in just gives me chills. can’t believe she’s the same actress who portrays aunt petunia in the harry potter series. her talent and beauty as an actress is impeccable.
