Note to Self - Word Balloons: A Study
(No spoilers, don't worry)
14 total comics to compare against, across genres with half as traditionally printed comics and half from webcomics. While not an exhaustive list, should be enough to start to give some idea about preferences.
Text Type: Either fully capitalized (EXAMPLE) or with mixed case (Example)
All Caps versus Mixed Case
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for all comics
Tumblr media
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for Traditional Printed Comics AND for all webcomics (same results)
Tumblr media
A slight preference for the traditional method of writing out word balloons with text in all caps
Spacing Between Text and Outer Balloons
Min Spacing versus Regular Spacing versus Max Spacing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spacing between text and outer balloon for all comics
Tumblr media
Traditional comics are basically evenly split between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and min spacing (which leaves essentially no room between the text and the balloon)
Traditional comics slightly tend toward a minimizing the spacing between the text and the balloon
Tumblr media
Spacing between text and outer balloons for webcomics
Webcomics are split between between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and extra spacing (which can sometimes double or triple the distance between the text and the balloon). Webcomics slightly tend towards adding additional space between the text and the word balloon
Tumblr media
Word Balloons Within or Outside the Panels
Within Panel versus Outside Panel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whether word balloon (typically) lie entirely within or can exist outside the strict space of the panel
Tumblr media
This is perhaps the most obvious difference between webcomics and traditional comics. All traditional comics in this set only have word balloons that lie within the panel, while all the webcomics typically have there word balloons lie outside their panels
Conclusion
As reductive as it sounds, the overall conclusion is that any combination of word balloon choices are well represented in both traditional and webcomics. The only noticeable difference is that webcomics tend to take greater advantage of the negative space between panels by moving their word ballons out of the panel borders

So I had this really fun idea recently for a Lore Olympus AU.
I thought it would be really fun to reimagine Once Upon a Time characters as Gods from the acclaimed Lore Olympus webcomic by Rachel Smythe. (Not Greek Mythology - not matching characters with specific Gods. I mean Rachel’s interpretation and art style specifically) I absolutely LOVE that series’ art style and the way Rachel uses color to tell the story.
So obviously I had to start with my favorite character!!!
Rumplestiltskin
God of
Textiles
Fatherhood
Dark Magic
Wealth
and Deals
(He’s an old God - he’s been around and is the deity of a lot of things.)
Tumblr media
I have also drawn Belle but am yet to color her. I’m thinking she’s going to be the goddess of learning, stories, books, and redemption, and she’s going to be all shades/tints of light blue.
What other characters/gods & goddesses would you like to see?
Also some notes about my design/thought process and some other ideas about Rumple in this AU if anyone’s interested:
I put a lot of thought into Rumple’s design and what colors I should use for him. I wanted to incorporate gold into it obviously but I thought that all gold would be more appropriate for King Midas and Catherine. (And I wanted to try for something more original since Hera in LO is all gold) That, and I didn’t think all gold would fit all of his vibes. So eventually what I decided on was this:
Rumple’s main color was inspired by amber for a couple of reasons.
I thought oranges and browns would suit him well at all stages/phases of his life, from the spinner then the dark one to Mr. Gold then Detective Weaver.
Because amber fits well with the design concepts I have in mind for Fiona, Malcom/Peter Pan, and Baelfire.
Because his coloring is inspired by amber, which is a translucent stone, he can look different depending on the lighting he’s in or his mood, which suits him really well as an ever-shifting, complicated, and at times unpredictable character.
His hands however, have been corrupted by him overdoing it with his powers, so they’re black up to the elbow. Save his fingers, which turn gold when he’s spinning.
I also had the idea that his ankle was injured in the war against the titans, leaving him with scars that hurt and bleed ichor from time to time.
Also his like “god form” when he’s angry or otherwise using a LOT of power at once is either all gold or black with gold speckles/stars. I haven’t decided yet.
And I put him in the blue outfit for the sake of this drawing because I thought it would contrast nicely with his skin.
And the sparkles around the gold straw may be a little overboard and were a last minute decision but they were ✨fun.✨ ☺️
I had a lot of fun with this and probably won’t be able to resist drawing the God of Wealth again.

What Makes A Baby By Cory Silverberg
Tumblr media
What Makes a Baby is a children’s picture book about where babies come from, written by sexuality educator Cory Silverberg and illustrated by award-winning Canadian artist Fiona Smyth.
Geared to readers from pre-school to about 8 years old, it teaches curious kids about conception, gestation, and birth in a way that works regardless of whether or not the kid in question was adopted, conceived using reproductive technologies at home or in a clinic, through surrogacy, or any of the other wondrous ways we make babies these days, and regardless of how many people were involved, their orientation, gender and other identity, or family composition.
Just as important, the story doesn’t gender people or body parts, so most parents and families will find that it leaves room for them to educate their child without having to erase their own experience.

This children’s book about where babies come from is a queer parent’s dream
An inclusive children’s book is gaining praise from parents everywhere since queer author Markus Harwood-Jones brought attention to it on TikTok. What Makes a Baby by Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth is an extremely accessible story of the many ways babies come into this world. Written for kids ages preschool to eight, the book is bursting with color and imagery that makes learning the science behind creating life a joy for all ages and all types of families. Harwood-Jones read the entire story on TikTok and praised it as “a beautifully simple yet accurate and inclusive depiction of how babies are made.” The story is not only applicable to LGBTQ+ parents, either. Through its inclusive language, it can apply to absolutely anyone. Instead of diving deep into a single process to create a baby like in virto fertilization (IVF), sexual intercourse, or surrogacy, the book tells the story of a sperm and an egg that must meet and be placed into someone with a uterus in order for life to form. It acknowledges the variety of ways this can happen and the variety of people that may or may not be involved. @markusbones “What Makes a Baby” by Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth – a beautifully simple yet accurate and inclusive depiction of how babies are made Highly recommend! #kidlit #bookreview #childrensbooks ♬ original sound – Markus Bones Comments on Harwood-Jones’s video praised the story. “I love the accuracy of the terminology,” wrote one user. “Human anatomy isn’t too much for children to learn and this book makes it so accessible for them to learn!” Another wrote, “My heart felt so warm with all the inclusivity!” “I’m an IVF baby, and would’ve loved this book when i was younger,” said a third follower. A fourth added, “My son was made with a donor egg, but born from me. This is the book we will use to explain it! I love it so much.” The comments go on and on. Many wished they had something like it growing up. Some said they cried. One user pointed out that the book’s inclusivity actually made sharing all the information simpler for kids. One person called it a “revolution.” Queer author and parent B.J. Woodstein told Metro that she recommends the book because its “bright illustrations depict people in colors that humans don’t actually come in, so anyone can relate to the story, plus they are all non-gendered, which shows readers that people with all sorts of bodies can have eggs or sperm or a uterus.” “For parents unsure how to talk about trans topics, this can be a great introduction. Furthermore, Silverberg leaves a lot of room for you to tell your own story, which makes the book applicable to any and every family,” Woodstein added. “Your child gets the basics of where babies come from, while you add the specifics of how you created your family, whether that was through adoption, fertility treatment, intercourse or another way,” Woodstein continued. “When Silverberg asks, ‘Who was waiting for you to be born?’, my daughters love to respond, ‘Mummy and Mama, and they wanted us so much!'” http://dlvr.it/T65jcM

It's Banned Books Week!
We are, of course, celebrating by reading books that have been frequently challenged and banned in schools and libraries across the U.S.
Here are the books we're reading, with the reasons they were challenged and/or banned:
Sex is a Funny Word by Cory Silverberg, illustrated by Fiona Smyth
Reasons: challenged, banned, and relocated for LGBTQIA+ content; for discussing gender identity and sex education; for concerns that the title and illustrations were “inappropriate”; and because it is believed to lead children to “want to have sex or ask questions about sex.”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou
Reason: sexually explicit, homosexuality, offensive language, racism, unsuited to age group, violence
The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison
Reasons: sexually explicit, unsuited for age group, “contains controversial issues", violence, offensive language, depicts CSA
George (retitled Melissa's Story in 2021) by Alex Gino
Reasons: challenged, banned, restricted, and hidden to avoid controversy; for LGBTQIA+ content and a transgender character; for not reflecting “the values of our community”; because schools and libraries should not “put books in a child’s hand that require discussion”; for sexual references; for conflicting with a religious viewpoint and “traditional family structure”; for encouraging children to clear browser history and change their bodies using hormones; for mentioning “dirty magazines”; for describing male anatomy; for “creating confusion”; and because the “sexuality was not appropriate at elementary levels”.
Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds
Reasons: Banned and challenged because of author’s public statements, and because of claims that the book contains “selective storytelling incidents” and does not encompass racism against all people
Source: ALA's list of most frequently challenged and banned books
Sorry for the long post! Turns out Melissa's Story has been banned, like, a lot. Geez Louise.
Anyway, you can find more banned books at ala.org/bbooks. That's also where you'll find support and a way to report it if people are trying to ban books in your community.
Now go forth and read!

DEBUTING AT TCAF 2018 - 4PANEL 2 by Various Artists
In the pages of 4PANEL 2, artists Jessica Bartram, Jonathan Dyck, Drazen Kozjan, Hartley Lin, Erik Nebel, Samplerman and Fiona Smyth explore the 4PANEL strip form in unique and beautiful ways, each presenting a collection of new strips in a self-contained section of the book.
In all ways an expansion on its predecessor, the massive 4PANEL 2 anthology demonstrates the ability of individual creators to artistically test the generative nature of the constraint-based 4PANEL template; the wonderful works filling up this book display a range of visual and representational styles, and of visual and narrative structures — and, happily, the resulting sections these seven contributors offer up could not be more different!
Exhibiting Creator: Jonathan Dyck, Hartley Lin, Fiona Smyth Publisher: Popnoir Editions Price: $22 CAD
