Brown's unlikely comeback: "Close to tears for many of us"
MALMÖ. Against all odds, Fiona Brown, 27, charges as newly crowned Swedish champion to face one of the world's best club teams.
When she suffered her fourth knee injury last year, the Scot was ready to retire.
- I wasn't sure I would be able to handle it, she says.
On Monday, FC Rosengård became the champion.
The day before, Fiona Brown had scored her first goal after the fourth severe knee injury when she scored 2–0 away to Kristianstad.
- I didn't think about it when I scored the goal, that it was my first. But the sick thing is that everyone else had thought of it.
- It was close to tears for many of us. I was sitting on the bench when she scored that goal. A fantastic feeling of course. She is one of my closest friends so extra special to me, says Olivia Schough.
The SM gold is the Scot's third, but it could just as well have stopped at two. Because when Brown suffered a cruciate ligament injury in August 2021, she didn't think she would be able to make it back one more time.
- I've said this a thousand times but I'm just so happy that I play in this club with my best friends, because they were the ones who believed in me so much and helped me so much in the beginning that I could start believing in myself myself and that I would make it one more time, she says and continues:
- I'm very glad that I could do it because what if I had sat at home now and not played football anymore and Rosengård met Barcelona?
Supported by Schough
It was the Scot's third cruciate ligament injury. Add to that a severe cartilage injury in the knee and three operations and you might be able to enter the darkness that Brown felt just over a year ago.
But then the friends were there.
It was also together with Schough, Emma Berglund and Caroline Seger that Brown celebrated the SM gold on Monday.
- Seger and I sat and watched TV and talked to each other and just, well, what do we do now? But it was good that we were together because it was a bit of a last minute plan. We made homemade pizza and thought of having a pizza night but it turned out to be a golden night.
Is it the weirdest celebration?
- Last year I was injured and I sat at home with my mother when they played in Piteå. It was the first time I didn't go with the team. My mother just "sorry I'm here", so it was a bit strange too but then they came home and we partied.
- But this was really very strange.
"A dream"
There was no party after the SM gold. It will have to wait, because now Rosengård will face FC Barcelona. Before a sold out Malmö IP.
- For me personally, it has been a tough journey to get there and to now be able to play and experience this with my friends and teammates. Everything is worth it, says Brown and concludes:
- I love football, I love that I can play again and I love that I have teammates who care so much about me and about my journey because they were there all the way. They were there from the beginning and they have been there at the end. They are the ones who have experienced this with me every day and had to deal with my mood swings. That we get to experience this together is a dream. SM gold for Rosengård!
