Beach Reads for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fans
The Alexander Inheritance by Eric Flint (due out 7/4/17):  NEW TIME TRAVEL ALT. HISTORY FROM A MASTER: Flint's Ring of Fire and Boundary series have proved him to be a master of time travel alternate history. Here then, a new tale of persons displaced in time, fighting for their lives. Twice before, mysterious cosmic catastrophes have sent portions of the Earth across space and back in time—first, with the Grantville Disaster in West Virginia, and then again with a maximum security prison in southern Illinois. Now, the planet is struck with yet another such cataclysm, whose direct impact falls upon the Queen of the Sea, a cruise ship in the Caribbean. When the convulsions subside, the crew and passengers of the ship discover that they have arrived in a new and frightening world. They are in the Mediterranean now, not the Caribbean. Still worse, they discover that the disaster has sent them more than two thousand years back in time. Following the advice of an historian among the passengers, Marie Easley, they sail to Egypt—or, at least, where they hope Egypt will be. Sure enough, Egypt is there—ruled over by Ptolemy, the founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty and one of Alexander the Great’s chief generals. Alexander the Great, it turns out, died just two years ago. The western world has just entered what would become known as the Hellenistic Period of history, during which time Greek civilization would spread around the Mediterranean and beyond. But the first fifty years of the Hellenistic Period was the Age of Diadochi—the Time of the Successors—when Alexander’s empire would collapse into chaos. By the time the Successors finished their strife, every single member of Alexander’s dynasty would be murdered and only three of the generals who began that civil war would still be alive. That is the new world in which the Queen of the Sea finds itself. Can Marie Easley and Captain Lars Flodden guide the crew and passengers through this cataclysm? Fortunately, they have some help: a young Norwegian ship’s officer who forms an attachment to Alexander’s widow; a French officer who is a champion pistol marksman; a canny Congressman from Utah—and, most of all, many people of the time who are drawn to a vision of the better world of the future.
Alien: Covenant by Alan Dean Foster:  Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with Alien: Covenant, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien adventure. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise. But it is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imaginations, they must attempt a harrowing escape. Acclaimed author Alan Dean Foster also returns to the universe he first encountered with the official novelization of the original Alien film. Alien: Covenant is the pivotal adventure that preceded that seminal film, and leads to the events that will yield one of the most terrifying sagas of all time.
The Day After Gettysburg by Robert Conroy:  New Alternate History from a Master of the Form: Robert Conroy was an unalloyed master of alternate history. Now, J.R. Dunn completes one of his final novels. LEE STRIKES BACK! After a terrible setback at Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee does not retreat across the Potomac and his ultimate surrender at Appomattox. Instead, he turns the tables on Union General George Meade with a vicious counterattack that sets the Union Army on its heels. While Lee sets across Pennsylvania in a dazzling war of maneuver, a crazed actor closes in on President Abraham Lincoln. Standing in his way is Major Steve Thorne, a thoughtful lawyer-turned-soldier fighting for the Union and his own self-respect, and Cassandra Baird, a young woman whose courage is only surpassed by her determination to teach emancipated slaves to read and write, and so ensure their freedom. Opposing them is Colonel Corey Wade, a brave Confederate officer who is just as determined to fight to the death for his honor and that of his state. And, in the end, the fate of a nation may come down to a freed slave named Hadrian, a man with an iron resolve never to return to bondage. The time has come to strike a blow for liberty—or go down swinging!
Gilded Cage by Vic James (paperback due out 7/25/17):  MAGIC RULES. WE SERVE. In a darkly fantastical debut set in modern-day Britain, magic users control everything: wealth, politics, power—and you. If you’re not one of the ultimate one-percenters—the magical elite—you owe them ten years of service. Do those years when you’re old, and you’ll never get through them. Do them young, and you’ll never get over them. This is the darkly decadent world of Gilded Cage. In its glittering milieu move the all-powerful Jardines and the everyday Hadleys. The families have only one thing in common: Each has three children. But their destinies entwine when one family enters the service of the other. They will all discover whether any magic is more powerful than the human spirit. Have a quick ten years. . . .
Injection Burn by Jason Hough:  Part one of a thrilling action-adventure sci-fi duology featuring indomitable characters, incredible worlds, and plenty of rip-roaring action and thrills! Rescue operation—or suicide mission? Skyler Luiken and his ragtag crew of scavengers, scientists, and brawlers have a new mission: a long journey to a distant planet where a race of benevolent aliens are held captive behind a cloud of destructive ships known as the Swarm Blockade. No human ships have ever made it past this impenetrable wall, and Skyler knows not what to anticipate when they reach their destination. Safe to say that the last thing he expects to find there is a second human ship led by the tough-as-nails captain, Gloria Tsandi. These two crews—and their respective captains—initially clash, but they will have to learn to work together when their mutual foe closes in around them and begins the outright destruction of their vessels—along with any hope of a return to Earth.
Nevernight by Jay Kristoff: Nevernight is the first in an epic new fantasy series from the New York Times bestselling author, Jay Kristoff. In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, a sixteen year old Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic — the Red Church. Treachery and trials await her with the Church’s halls, and to fail is to die. But if she survives to initiation, Mia will be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the only thing she desires.
The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden: From a new voice in the tradition of Lauren Beukes, Ian McDonald, and Nnedi Okorafor comes The Prey of Gods, a fantastic, boundary-challenging tale, set in a South African locale both familiar and yet utterly new, which braids elements of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and dark humor. In South Africa, the future looks promising. Personal robots are making life easier for the working class. The government is harnessing renewable energy to provide infrastructure for the poor. And in the bustling coastal town of Port Elizabeth, the economy is booming thanks to the genetic engineering industry which has found a welcome home there. Yes—the days to come are looking very good for South Africans. That is, if they can survive the present challenges:A new hallucinogenic drug sweeping the country . . .An emerging AI uprising . . .And an ancient demigoddess hellbent on regaining her former status by preying on the blood and sweat (but mostly blood) of every human she encounters. It’s up to a young Zulu girl powerful enough to destroy her entire township, a queer teen plagued with the ability to control minds, a pop diva with serious daddy issues, and a politician with even more serious mommy issues to band together to ensure there’s a future left to worry about.Fun and fantastic, Nicky Drayden takes her brilliance as a short story writer and weaves together an elaborate tale that will capture your heart . . . even as one particular demigoddess threatens to rip it out.
Scourge by Gail Martin (due out 7/11/17):  Corran, Rigan and Kell Valmonde have been orphaned—their father murdered by the city guard, their mother slain by monsters—and left to run the family business alone. Undertakers, gifted with ancient grave magic, they help souls pass into the After. Their home city of Ravenwood is a battleground for decadent princes and powerful guilds, and for Lord Mayor Ellor Machison, who crouches at the heart of it all like a bloated spider. The city has long been beset by monsters—flesh-eating ghouls, hideous snake-fiends, monstrous maggots—yet the city guards do nothing. When the toll climbs too high, it’s up to the people to take arms and defend themselves. But in fighting for their lives, the Valmonde brothers become targets in a deadly game, and must risk everything to survive.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets by Christie Golden (due out 7/25/17):  In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
You Die When You Die by Angus Watson:  YOU DIE WHEN YOU DIE . . . You can't change your fate - so throw yourself into battle, because you'll either win or wake up drinking mead in the halls of your ancestors. That's what Finn's tribe believe. But when their settlement is massacred by a hostile tribe and Finn and several friends, companions and rivals make their escape across a brutal, unfamiliar landscape, Finn will fight harder than he's ever fought in his life. He wants to live - even if he only lives long enough to tell Thyri Treelegs how he feels about her. The David Gemmell Award nominated author of Age of Iron returns with You Die When You Die - in which a mismatched group of refugees battle animals and monsters, determined assassins, powerful tribes, an unforgiving land and each other as they cross a continent to fulfill a prophecy.

Alaskan Iditarod, NFL, Spirituality, Do They Relate?
Tumblr media
The following pictures are from multiple Iditarod races in Alaska.   Below is an article in regards to the NFL as well as the Iditarod race concluding with a spiritual parable relating to the Iditarod.     Many sports loving fans in the states are very aware of the NFL as well as various teams and players and quite eager to watch the games.   According to an article in Forbes magazine titled "How The National Football League Can Reach 25 Billion In Annual Revenues",  it states that revenues are now at $9 billion which means the league is the most lucrative in the world.   Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner wants more, much more.   In fact, he is the one that came up with the $25 billion annual revenue figure for the league by the year of 2027.  You might ask, what does that have to do with the Alaskan Iditarod?  Simply put, the NFL is a good illustration of how important and riveting sports games are to a city, state or nation. Alaska has eyes fixed on the exciting race of the Iditarod.   Any Alaskan will tell you that this race plasters the television screen during the events, much like the NFL does in the lower 48,  North America  and for good reason as well. As a fan, following any sports player on the team is exciting when the fan is well aware of the players challenges, strengthes, defeats and victories.  Somehow there is a connection made when fans can relate or be inspired by a finish line even if they are not the ones in the game or the race.   Somehow,  fans live vicariously through the athletes and feel as though they win when the athletes win. In Alaska, finishing the race is a goal, but winning is the ultimate goal.  The race is 1049 miles along the Iditarod Trail and is sponsored by major companies known as Cabela's, Wells Fargo, and Anchorage Chrysler Dodge as well as Chevron, Texaco, Alaska Airlines and many more. For more information on the Iditarod, please visit Wikipedia.org,  or read about the race on other major news sites listed below:   The Sportsman Channel OutDoor Sportsman Group Newsbay Media Multichannel News Alaska Businss Anchorage Daily News   Below you will find an interesting discussion or talk in regards to the  Iditarod and  spirituality and an interesting connection between the two.   As Jesus gave parables about various issues and subjects, Al Baird from the International Church of Christ, uses the Iditarod  to describe a spiritual race.   Scroll down and you will find the text version of the beginning of the sermon as well as a video of the sermon itself.
Tumblr media
Parable Of The Iditarod by Al Baird, International Church of Christ Today were are going to be talking about a parable. Now this is going to be an unusual sermon. It is going to be different than a sermon you have heard before and certainly different than a sermon that I have done before. this was inspired because Gloria and I went with Bob and Susan to Alaska in June and we had a fantastic time seeing the sights of God's creation, but there was something that really impacted me there that I want to talk about today. Originally when I got back I preached a sermon in the West and Floyd heard about it and thought it would be good to share. It is not because I am such a great guide preacher whatever, but I think this is a very valuable lesson for you. We understand what parables are. A parable is a physical story with the spiritual application and Jesus of course primarily taught through parables. In fact Jesus had 46 different parables that are shared in the Gospels and we're familiar with those they stick with us, new wine in old wine skins, treasures in a field, the pearl of great price, workers in the vineyard, the parable of the lost coin, the parable of the soils and we can go on and on and on. This parable is different. I first started thinking about this and I thought I had call this the parable of March madness, but then I thought you would get the wrong idea because this is not a parable about basketball however, it is about a sporting event that takes place every March of the year and it is called the parable of the Iditarod. How many people of heard of the Iditarod? You are different than me before I went to Alaska I never heard of the Iditarod. But I got hooked on Alaska and got hooked on the event and for the things that go on. see the Iditarod and you may recognize a couple of these beautiful women here, the Iditarod is a dog sled race that goes across Alaska 1049 miles, Non-Stop and it starts the first Saturday of every March. We were not there in March but we certainly saw a lot of the evidence and people love the Iditarod. And this is a picture of Susan Butch, she's the second woman to win the Iditarod and she won the Iditarod 4 times. The Iditarod starts in March in Anchorage and it's more popular in Alaska than basketball is in the lower 48. It's just that important. Here's a map showing you that starts in Anchorage and goes all the way to gnome, 1049 Mi, to put this in perspective it's like going to Phoenix to Dallas, it's that long. The idea started about 40 years ago and it's been running every year. This is a picture of what it's like and you think this is a great run, it would be a lot of fun, it takes about 10 days and is non stop. The record is eight days it's been done in 8 Days however, this is not what it looks like all the time, because invariably their blizzards and typically there are temperatures of 40 below zero and this is typically how a mushroom looks on this trip. that's not all if it was a weather thing it might be a little different however, there are lots of bears and bear love dogs, the weather and the Bear the major problem the major problem are moose. You see moose are afraid of dogs and try to kill dogs . In fact Susan Butcher the first time she ran had two of her dogs killed as she ran had two of her dogs killed and five injured by Moose and five injured by Moose. So you see this is not just a simple thousand Mile Run. It's braving the elements, but it's also braving the wild life. Now , the race is really about the dogs and that's what we're going to be talking about today. I mean the mushers just ride the ride , but the race is about the dogs so typically a team is about 10 to 16 dogs who run and pull the sled. The mushers raise these dogs and breed these dogs especially for racing and they raise them from pups and pick the best ones bred for teams. Now, some of you are looking at this picture and are probably asking, are these dogs dead? They're not dead they're just sleeping. They get to sleep two hours every 40 miles or so, just because of the endurance. You can imagine a thousand miles race like this. Now there are about 40 different stops on the race where they get food they get water , the vets have to check the dogs to make sure they are healthy they get a little bit of sleep. On average for this 10-day race the musher gets on average at one to two hours every night, that's about it and so from that we're going to talk about a parable. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this particular race, in fact there are four different lessons that I want to talk about. . The first one is eagerness. We were able to go to an area where actually, Susan butchers dogs are bred. it's very interesting probably in this compound there were about 60 dogs and they bred all these dogs and they pick out the very best ones. it's very interesting what these dogs do, because they'll take practice runs and only 12 to 16 dogs get to be in a run and all other dogs are jumping up and down because they don't get to run and even the dogs in a harness before they get to run, they are all jumping up and down. it's amazing , these dogs want to run. We live in a time and culture where it's not cool to be eager. isn't that right? it's just not the culture to really be eager unless you're really going for a promotion, but it's not that way for the dogs and it's not the way we should be in the kingdom of God. the Bible talks a lot about eagerness in fact we all know from the Bereans , because we studied that when we became disciples in Acts chapter 17 , they were eager. do you remember what it was like when you study the Bible? do you remember your eagerness ? do you remember how you could hardly wait for the next study? do you remember what it was like for the first time you read the Bible? you were so eager wait for what was coming next. These dog sled teams are chosen number one for the eagerness of the dogs. now if God were choosing a team based on eagerness would he choose you? compared to the eagerness you had when you started studying. compared to the eagerness you had when you were a young disciple. you know, we can get kind blahzay, some of us have been around for 20 or 30 years it's not simple to stay eager is it? it's not simple, it just doesn't happen naturally. you know, how was your Bible study now, do you look forward to your Bible study? I mean, probably a lot of your read the Bible through about 15 times or so, but are you eager to find new things or do you feel like , I've read that before. What about worship, how eager are you to worship? that's sort of indicative on how early you get here. I'm not pointing my finger I didn't keep score tonight of who came in late or whatever. you know, I'm going along out tomorrow night to see the Cardinals in the Jets play. you know, I'm not going to be late for that game. I'm going to get there early, maybe an hour early. I'm eager in the seats are already reserved I don't have to worry about that, it's exciting! do you have that kind of eagerness in your worship? This concludes the first part of Al Baird's message in text form. To finish the sermon, please watch the video below:

Alaskan Iditarod and Spirituality, Does It Relate?
The Alaskan Iditarod. Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner once more, much more.   in fact, he is the one that came up with the $25 billion annual revenue figure for the league by the year of 2027. You might ask, what does that have to do with the Alaskan Iditarod?  Simply put, the NFL is a good illustration of how important and riveting sports games are to a city state or nation.   Alaska has eyes fixed on  this exciting race, the Iditarod.   Any Alaskan will tell you that this race plasters the television screen during the events, much like the NFL does in the lower 48,  North America  and for good reason as well. As a fan, following any sports player on the team is exciting when the fan is well aware of the players challenges,  defeats and strengths.   Somehow there is a connection made when fans can relate or be inspired by a finish line  even if they are not the ones in the game or the race.   Somehow,  fans live vicariously through the athletes  and feel as though they win when the athletes win. In Alaska, finishing the race is a goal,  but winning is the ultimate goal.   the race is 1049 miles along the Iditarod Trail  sponsored by major companies by the name of Cabela's, Wells Fargo, and Anchorage Chrysler Dodge as well as Chevron, Texaco, Alaska Airlines and many more. Scroll down will below you will find the text version of the beginning of the sermon as well is a video of the sermon itself.

Parable Of The Iditarod by Al Baird Today were to be talking about a parable. But I got hooked on Alaska and got hooked on the event and for the things that go on. see the Iditarod and you may recognize a couple of these beautiful women here, the Iditarod is a dog sled race that goes across Alaska 4049 miles, Non-Stop and it starts the first Saturday of every March. The idea started about 40 years ago and it's been running every 40 years and this is a picture of what it's like and you think this is a great run, it would be a lot of fun , I might like to do this. it takes about 10 days and is non stop. the record is eight days it's been done in 8 Days however, this is not what it looks like all the time, because invariably their blizzards and typically there are temperatures of 40 below zero and this is typically how a mushroom looks on this trip. that's not all if it was a weather thing it might be a little different however, there are lots of bears and bear love dogs, the weather and the Bear the major problem the major problem are moose. To finish the sermon, please watch the video below:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR-AhYtr-W0     Sermon by Al Baird | International Church of Christ Article above written by Steve Sramek | ChurchInMyArea.com                                                                             Sermon by Al Baird International Church of Christ   Today were to be talking about a parable.
