personally I think the best thing that the joker sequel did for me was expose the exact degree to which how much of internet/public criticism is not based on genuine analysis of the content using social and cultural resources to support an actual argument but is actually adult children whining because someone took their batman toys and put them up on a high shelf for once and they, as a consumer, feel like they're entitled to throw a tantrum about it
#one of those 'if everyone's a critic no one will be' kind of situations#like every day I have to see 30 youtube thumbnails saying 'joker 2 bad' and then they say 'this scene was bad' and the only evidence they#give for their reasoning on it is 'it didn't make sense' and I want to turn into my english teacher and give reading comprehension question#like. if something doesn't make sense then why not examine the deeper reasoning that led you to that conclusion? why not then also entertai#the circumstances in which the situation would be plausible? you know? find some actual answers? but that is too much to ask of people#truly the gulf between a really well educated opinion analyzing the actual content rather than knee-jerking and saying 'I don't like it' is#far and fucking wide. I literally have only found ONE video essay that actually does a decent job talking about theme and the cohesion#between the two movies about the gulf between reality and fantasy which I thought was REALLY a good and thoughtful take on it all#but the rest of them are just like 'OOOOH MOVIE BAD MOVIE SO BAD'#like. you can't just say that!!! I know it's the internet and it's edged your ego enough to make you think you can#but some of us would like you to unpack your actual reasoning. but you do not have the capacity for that. clearly#go back to ninth grade for god's sake like this is a really basic skill for actually analyzing narrative and film and you do not have it#joker#folie a deux#joker 2#arthur fleck

#Seeing the dune part 2 american centric red carpet and as a devoted aficionado of the books and yk a moroccan person here are my 2 cents#Dune was one of the few Western works inspired by MENA culture that that felt genuine and respectful#But ofc despite the profound symbiosis with Middle Eastern and North African culture evident within the pages of the novels#the movie adaptation lack of substantive representation from these communities both in on-screen portrayals and within production roles was#very much disappointing in part 1 and i doubt there are any change now#While drawing inspiration from the Amazigh peoples of Algeria and Morocco#the film barely skims the surface of its MENA influences leaving substantial potential untapped#Herbert openly acknowledged the profound impact of Islam and MENA culture on his noveIs#from the metaphorical representation of Spice as oil#to the allegorical parallels drawn between the occupation of Arrakis and real-world MENA geopolitics#By marginalizing Arabs from the narrative fabric of Dune the essence of the story is being undermined particularly its anti-colonial core#the irony of this is kiIIing me because this was a direct resuIt of us impérialism on the middIe east#But the reality is that Dune is an American production tailored for an American audience so it makes sense for it to be what it is now#a big production running from its original essence#What adds to my disappointment is the fact that I liked Villeneuve's adaptation of Incendies and I had what you call foolish hope hfhg#Dune feIt Iike a squandered opportunity to authentically depict the cultural milieu that inspired it#Given the narrative's inherent anti-colonial themes#the omission of Arab and North African voices dilute its message if any of it is even left#without representation from Arabs and Amazigh people the cultural essence becomes another appropriated resource watered down to an aestheti#rather than serving as a critique of the destructive actions of colonialists seeking power and dominance#the narrative becomes susceptible to distortion and co-option by the very entities it was intended to condemn and hold accountable

ok so apparently i can just never articulate my Deep Thoughts on purpose and can only do it by accident whilst rambling in the notes of a bookmark where the veneer of anonymity feels like a false-protective coat to hide behind, or somesuch-something like that. idk. anyways. anyways. i don't like how fucking mean-spirited across the spider-verse as a film seemingly is for literally no reason at all other than just bcuz it Could Be. y/k.
#talking tag#atsv#spider-man#spider-man 2099#miguel o'hara#miles morales#suicide mention#suicide tw#& i am talking abt the Actual Textual Content of atsv btw not the Fandom Interpretation of it. bcuz those r 2 different things lmao.#every additional piece of context that we learn abt the behind-the-scenes too. it just. Sours this film to me. like drinking rotten milk#only ONE person outside of his family unconditionally supports miles. ONE. ONE!!!!!!!!!! the whole film!!!!#(obie obie broauwn i hate the AM i hate the PM u will live in my heart for ever)#and Knowing now how much the writers obviously didnt give a shit abt Mig.. it all just reads like that rotten any1 can wear the mask but yo#and that echoes in the narrative disdain for the one other spider-man in the whole movie whose origin is /like miles/.#who DID have a spider-man in his world who died before he got his powers who IS motivated by fear by wanting 2 be good but thinking he cant#You Cant Wear This Mask. The Only People Who Are Like You Actually LIKE You Are Twisted And Wrong And Warped Inevitably By That Wrongness.#Nobody Will Ever Understand What You Have Been Through And You Were Stupid And Naive To Ever Try Otherwise. You Petulant Child.#and the spider society treats miguel like shit like im honestly surprised that was just such a Casual Thing in the movie but no#they microaggress him 2 hell and back they insult him to his face they do not respect his boundaries they flat-out just Dont Respect Him#and he Takes It. of course he takes it. it is Literally All He Knows. taking it and hating himself and knowing that he is Different.#Christ almighty. what a shitshow.

I played mouthwashing because of a person on the dash 2 days ago and it hasn't left me alone for even a second. I've been unable to sleep for 2 nights now, not because I played a horror game and got scared, but because I keep waking up in a cold sweat with half-formed essay ideas on my lips. I think this game changed me as a person
#i think it's mainly bc the game does such a good job of getting you into the headspace of the player character#a lot of games force the player into doing stuff they don't want to that's not anything new#but combined with how well it sets up the human emotions at play and the fact that you /know/ someone who /would/ do these things...?#man i just#huh#feels bad to hurt people#also i'm usually the kind of person pretty convined that i would do better in horror films#rationally i know that depending on the situation your brain just stops functioning correctly etc#but for example (until dawn spoilers) that game /never/ made me feel like in that situation i would have cannibalized my sister#it just didn't make me feel desperate enough for that ig?#mouthwashing however... i don't think i would have coped better if i was anya#anya coped extraordinarily wel#and the way the narrative tries to minimize her role makes me feel queasy#like fuck#good game#i want to play it again and see all the implications i missed#more games should be 2-3 hrs#admittedly i rushed through it a bit#bc i am soooo scared of horror games#i actually wanted to quit after 1 hour bc i just don't deal well with the feeling of a jumpscare around the corner#but i saw that i was p much halfway through anyway and continued on#best decision of my life#now on to play how fish are made#if it's even half as well-thought-out and written as mouthwashing i'll gladly be freaked out again#(maybe if i force myself through enough jumpscares i'll finally desensitize myself)#(ongoing project of my life)#(i LOVE horror but i am sosososo scared!!!!)#also if you are the person who has been reblogging this game the past few days PLEASE say hi#i've been scrolling but i can't remember your username and i want to thank you and also yell at you :')

once i get some experience working with other people's short films i want to make one of my own but also. my brain has fixated on a very specific short story of mine for this purpose and somehow it has decided that this is the one i Have to make. but how am i supposed to adapt something to screen if most of the story is just the protagonist's internal monologue. how do you accurately depict that in a short film. and also how on earth will i acquire live jellyfish

Talking to the wall here, but I've been thinking more about Nausicaa manga recently and specifically Kushana and the way she's portrayed in it. If you think that viewing the manga through queer lens is impossible just scroll past this and don't scream at me, I'm not making anyone read this or agree with me, I'm just writing down my thoughts
Anything gender related doesn't*really* get talked about in the manga (except for maybe hate towards women in Tolmekia?) but I've read many reviews/analyses regarding Nausicaa and Kushana and the way they're shown as female characters and different"feminine" traits they have, and while I don't really understand treating various personality traits as "masculine" or "feminine" I believe that we don't talk about Kushana's lifestyle literally challenging the way Tolmekian society treats gender norms enough. Just think about it. A princess born in a country where women are looked down on and not taken seriously, where they have 0 chances of gaining any power, commands an army and takes the throne. Not to mention that Kushana also had 3 elder brothers who were more than likely to become rulers of Tolmekia. She's also admired and respected or even feared by many people despite nearly being called "inferior" in the scene with her brother just because she was born a woman. What caught my attention however is that it's unusual to see a princess being given the same kind of upbringing as the princes. Kushana and her brothers were given military education and were expected to command armies, despite the fact that in many ways (gender, being the youngest in the family, not being a biological child to the emperor * according to one of the interpretations of 3 really confusing panels *, just to name a few) Kushana was not supposed to gain any political power at all. You could almost say that Kushana was treated as a prince, despite being a girl, which is exactly why I started writing this wall of text.
Kushana is everything men are supposed to be in this kind of *medieval-ish* society: a leader, a military commander, an excellent swordsman and rider, a talented tactician etc. even more so than her brothers who are never depicted doing anything she did . Sadly, the manga never mentions anything about how Kushana views her position and her responsibilities as well as the way she achieved her status. We never see how she views herself and her gender and how she's treated by her brothers (and probably other people as well). I believe that being female is not exactly comfortable for Kushana, given her rather abusive family.
It may not have been a conscious choice for her, but taking up a social role of a prince is what gave her the privileged position she had. Unlike Nausicaa who never really was limited to a certain type of social behavior dictated by the binary norms, Kushana had to behave according to these norms, but the manga does not explore that.
I'm entering headcanon territory at this point, just a warning for those of you who have read this far. Ever since I reread the manga for the 2nd/3? rd time I can't help viewing Kushana as a transmasc character. She doesn't necessarily present herself in this way fully (the clothing aspect mainly, which isn't explored either) but behavior-wise she definitely does. Her hair could also have been an aspect of presenting in a different way than her cis gender if her decision to cut it short was less impulsive. Obviously that's not the only way to interpret that, because being a butch lesbian also fits Kushana really well. Neither of these hcs have any confirmations and that's why both of them can be valid. Her backstory is a very interesting part of her character I wish more was said about it in the manga

Last night (well, this morning, really; it was like 3am) I slipped and fell down a Loki disk horse rabbit hole and, to be frank, I am already exhausted and season 2 hasn't even started yet. I'm not gonna lie, idk if I'm going to be able to fandom-along for season 2; I might just end up quietly watching on my own and keeping my thoughts to myself. Which - isn't as fun, really, so lol fuck me I guess.

#mood gif#loki pokey artichokey#standom frank#i'm just venting but.#idk. bitches be unhinged#and this might be a hot take but I truly genuinely 110% don't understand why#if you hated the show so much that you're still meta-ing about it three years later#why would you keep up with season 2? why are you engaging with the trailers and the gifs and the fandom reactions?#when you have absolutely nothing positive to say and instead are just regurgitating all the same things you had issue with for season 1?#i'm not trying to gatekeep the loki fandom but i'm just saying#i love loki but i hate infinity war - i hate the opening scene i hate the death scene i hate how the narrative treats his death and absence#for the rest of the film and i don't mind dr strange objectively but my opinion of him is colored to this day#due to feeling so bitter over how much magic and world-saving he got to do in iw when loki should have been part of that#if not *most* of that#but you know what i don't do? i don't fucking engage with or talk about infinity war#unless to reference it through the lens of thor's pov in post-iw/endgame fic#but i don't post about it. i don't post about the russos. i don't hop on people's posts to point out all the issues i have with iw#especially if said post is in support or praise of it#i engaged with endgame only to the extent to find out how loki would be treated. i watched the entirety of the movie once via torrent#and i moved. the fuck. on.#so i genuinely don't understand why i can't peruse loki series stuff and gifs and the tags without coming across the inevitable anti wank#from the same group of people who seem to be taking the release of season 2 as open invitation to remind everyone#how much they hated season 1 and how loki was characterized and how the narrative was unfair to him#and blah blah blah sylvie sylvie wahhh#it literally makes me not want to bother re-engaging with fandom or posting any of my thoughts or meta that i might have#bc my opinion's never been black and white but even if it *was* people are bound to misunderstand it anyway#like the playground is for everyone but if you hate the sandbox and keep talking about how much better the swings are#go play on the fucking swings then?#not sure that metaphor follows but you get it#anyway i just needed to get this off my chest

what is your opinion on the episode
wharf & peace.
Hmm, I really only discuss Seasons 1-7.
I did go ahead and watch this one and I have to say it only confirms the wisdom of my original boundaries, mwaha. I can't get invested either way.

I just got finish watching the first two episodes of Chucky season three and I keep looking back at the teaser for the next episode and I swear to god if they kill Andy I just might quit the series altogether!
Absolutely, that's the same mindset i'm in.
I said it before, if they brought Andy back only to kill him in a stupid and anti climatic way after that pseudo clousure they gave him at the end of season 2 I would proceed the same way me ( and many others) with the walking dead after the death of Carl.
Abandon the show into irrelevance.
