FOR HIS HEART CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
in which — dan feng can’t imagine a life without you. so even when death takes your hand, he'll hold on to your other and do anything to get you back in his embrace, no matter the consequences.
pairing — dan f/heng x gn!reader
wc: 2.5k, lovers to enemies, you both are lowkey bad with feelings LOL, i lied when i said there's an alternative ending for hurt/comfort enjoyers, now suffer. (reblogs w comments are appreciated, pls enjoy <3) ps. dividers aren't working cus tumblr is being mean to me so using dashes instead ARRHGHGHG
—
lying in your shared bed, your breathing grows increasingly shallow, your hands tremble uncontrollably, signaling another episode of your deteriorating condition. the dim, cold room feels oppressive as you catch the distant echoes of the best physicians from all around xianzhou, their hurried steps reverberating against the walls as they hasten to your side.
dan feng tightens his grip on your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours, his expression etched with concern. the smell of herbal remedies and the sharp scent of sickness fills the air, mingling with the mustiness of the stone walls; a familiar sense of dread washes over you as you struggle with each breath.
his brows are furrowed, and his lips are pressed into a thin line, his knuckles turning white from the tightness of his grip on your hands. the pressure is so intense that it almost hurts —almost, but not quite enough to cause you (more) pain. he would never hurt you, not even over his own grave.
despite the best efforts of your personal caregivers, the limitations of medical knowledge, and the uncertainty of your treatments are harsh realities you have to face. it fills him with anguish to witness your episodes almost daily —suddenly collapsing in his arms, gasping for breath; moments like these are where he feels like he's standing right beside your deathbed, desperately hoping for signs of improvement each time you open your eyes again.
it kills him that there's nothing he can do but watch over you, he watches as you waste away before his eyes, feeling a piece of himself wither away in tandem.
dan feng’s eyes search yours the moment you regain consciousness, the doctors respectfully step back, bowing before hurriedly exiting the room. his heart breaks into a million pieces when he sees your eyes that were once bright with joy, now clouded with tears. the sight pierces through him, stirring a deep ache in his chest.
"dan feng," you whisper hoarsely, your voice fragile with pain. “it hurts, it hurts so much…” he presses a soft kiss against your entwined hand, his touch a soothing balm amidst the storm raging within him. “don’t worry,” he murmurs softly, “i’ll make it go away soon, i swear.”
“thank you.. but promise me, if i don't make it, you'll find a way to move on.” you manage a weak smile through the pain. his eyes glisten with unshed tears, he shakes his head slightly, "i won’t let that happen."
of course he won’t. you were the kindest, most lovely soul before this godforsaken unknown illness with no definitive cure stole your life away; he sees your smile slowly losing its radiance, and your eyes dulling as each day passes.
“this body… it’s useless, i’m useless. i’m sorry, i—” dan feng places a finger against your lips. his touch tender yet firm, stopping your words. "don't say that," his voice choking with emotion. "you're not useless, in fact you're the strongest person i know."
hearing you utter such self loathing words is like a dagger twisting in his heart, tipping him over the edge. you, who have always been his anchor in life's turbulent seas, slipping away feels like fragile glass shattering into countless shards, leaving him scattered and irreparable, each piece cutting deeper into his core with every breath.
he can't face the idea of losing you. it destroys him from within, even more so now that time is running out. but he won’t let anyone else have you, not even the cold hands of death. for you, he’s willing to pay any price, even if it means he has to break the highest laws of xianzhou.
—
you wake up feeling unusually energized, a stark contrast to the persistent aches and pains that have haunted you for so long. as you sit up, the familiar discomforts are no longer present, instead replaced by an almost surreal sense of vitality.
but something feels strangely off, an unsettling sensation gnawing at the edges of your awareness. your eyes dart around the room, frantically searching for your boyfriend’s presence; he has never left your side without a word (his protectiveness wouldn't allow it anyway), especially not for this long.
panic flares as you look down at your body. the surgical wounds that once marked your skin have vanished without a trace. your breath catches in your throat as you run your fingers over the smooth, unblemished surface where scars should be.
you push back the covers and swing your legs over the side of the bed, struggling to piece together what could have happened.
where is dan feng? is he in trouble? and, why do you feel so... alive?
then, a chilling realisation dawns on you. you try to shake the thought from your mind, but no matter how hard you try, you aren’t able to find any other explanation that fits your condition. as the high elder, dan feng should know better than anyone that such an act is a sin —a disgrace...
the truth begins to settle in, he really did sacrifice everything to grant you immortality.
—
“you’re literally the high elder for god's sake, what have you done?!” you exclaim, your voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and anger.
dan feng's expression is pained as he meets your gaze, his own eyes filled with a desperate resolve. “i’m only trying to help you. you don’t understand, i—”
“help me?” you cut in sharply, scoffing. “you betrayed xianzhou! you betrayed me. i was ready to let go, so why?”
he reaches out to you, his hand stopping, and hovering in mid air as if unsure whether to touch you. "i can't bear to lose you," he confesses, his voice barely a whisper. "i can’t just stand by and watch you suffer when i have the power to save you."
tears well up in your eyes, the room feels suffocatingly small as you stand in front of him. for the first time, you find yourself on opposite sides of the battlefield, the weight of his transgression hangs heavy between you, tearing apart everything you once knew.
“by defying everything we stand for?” you choke out, your words laced with venom. “do you realise just what you’ve done?” he takes a step closer, his face etching with anguish. "i know i’ve made a grave mistake." he admits, “but will you believe me if i say that i didn’t regret it one bit?”
“how can you do all this… for love?” your eyes search his for answers that seem unfathomable. “no, my dear, for you.” he steps closer, his breath warm against your skin, gaze locking onto yours with an almost desperate intensity.
"but how can i ever love you again after this?" you whisper, your voice trembling. his heart shatters at how your eyes taint with fear and betrayal, the sight wrapping around his chest like a vice. the mere thought of losing you, of seeing you banished because of his desperation, is a torment he can hardly bear —but now one that he has to face.
"if you can't accept what i've done, i'll grant your wish, whatever it is.” he murmurs. “for you, i’m willing to pay any price."
though when bound in chains, his title of high elder does little to shield him from the repercussions of breaking the sacred laws. he’s taken away; his fate sealed by the very rules he broke. and you, the one he tried to save, find yourself exiled, cast out for the sin you never chose.
as you wander, lost and alone, the realisation of what he gave up for you lingers, a bittersweet reminder of his love that defied everything, yet cost you both so much.
—
the land of xianzhou is something dan heng is strangely familiar with; he walks through the maze of narrow alleys and crowded squares, every corner seems to whisper fragments of memories long buried.
“dan heng! look, isn’t this so cool?!” the excited voice of a pink haired girl reaches his ears. her eyes sparkle with enthusiasm as she animatedly gestures towards a nearby market stall with hand-carved trinkets. she continues to gush over the intricate designs while holding the hand of her grey haired companion, eagerly dragging them towards the stall.
his eyes follows them as their silhouette grows smaller and smaller, eventually disappearing amidst the crowd. just then, another figure in the distance catches his attention.
it’s a brief glimpse, a fleeting moment where your eyes meet across the street. perhaps it's your mannerisms, your familiar gestures, or simply the way you carry yourself —whatever it is, it stirs a rush of adrenaline, a sense of déjà vu that he can’t quite shake.
dan heng pushes through the bustling throng, eyes darting frantically in search of you. the world blurs around him as he focuses solely on catching another glimpse of you; he spots you slipping into a narrow alleyway, and without hesitation, he follows.
the noise of the market fades into a distant hum as his footsteps echo softly against the alley walls. he turns a corner and sees you up ahead, your figure outlined by the dim light filtering through cracks in the buildings.
you soon reach a dead end, but as you turn to leave, you bump into someone’s chest. the world seems to stand still for a moment, dan heng's breath catches in his throat as he looks down at you. although your face is partially obscured by a thin veil, your features are still discernible.
“oh? it seems you still remember me.” you finally meet his gaze. those eyes he cherished so dearly still hold a spark of life. “[name]?” he murmurs, the sound of your name still so intimate on his lips after many years.
“you haven’t changed one bit.” he reaches out to gently push the veil covering your face aside. a flood of memories rushes through his mind, one a sharp pang in his heart. seeing you again triggers a vivid recollection of the exact place and position you were in years ago, a memory that stings to recall.
“i wonder whose fault it is?” you tilt your head, if only he knew the trouble you went through to find him again; given that goodbyes were never exchanged between you, it seems fitting to offer one now.
before he can say a word, you swiftly grab his collar and wedge him firmly against the wall. he doesn’t resist even when he feels the cold sharp edge of your dagger pressing against his throat, his gaze still fixing firmly on yours.
"have you ever felt remorse?" you lean closer into him, your voice is barely audible through your gritted teeth. he ignores your question; unexpectedly, he grips your hand, dragging the blade down to his chest, positioning the point directly over his heart.
"as long as my blood is on your hands, go ahead, do it." he whispers, his voice steady despite the tension. "my heart has always been yours anyway." his eyes bore into yours as if daring you to follow through.
his grip on your hand tightens, urging you closer. "and if this is what it takes to ease your pain, then i'm ready."
"...what? you must be out of your mind if you think this way of making amends will work." your disbelief is clear in your voice; you try to shake his hand away, but he refuses to budge.
dan feng couldn’t imagine a life without you, so when death takes your hand, he holds on to your other —and finds you again as dan heng. even as he gets on his knees and begs for your forgiveness, he still holds on to your hand as tightly as he can, afraid that any moment you might slip through his fingers.
“i’m sorry, i just couldn’t accept the thought of you leaving me.” and i still can’t, so please don’t leave me again.
you feel your willpower wavering, his very being melting away at your resolve. it's too much to bear, and you feel yourself slipping under the weight of his words. even still, you find yourself struggling to deny him. to deny yourself. to deny your own feelings.
you fight the urge to simply give in, torn between the desire to just let go and fall into the sweet oblivion of his embrace, and the fear of getting sucked back into a cycle of destruction and pain. the weight of all that history, all those memories of your bittersweet love, it's overwhelming, nearly crushing.
“i know.” your heart aches, but you still deny the crave of the comfort of his arms. “and you’re not wrong,” the dagger clatters to the ground, the metallic sound echoing through the alleyway.
“your heart is mine.” you push the veil to cover your face, placing your hands on his shoulder, leaning in. the cool silk brush against his parted lips, and oh… he’s been waiting so, so long for this moment.
though you pull away just as he comes to his senses. for the first time in years, he sees your smile again —the same smile that first captivated him, the one he had cherished and sought to preserve over the years.
"remember the wish you owe me?" he nods, unable to find words. the memory of his promise resurfaces with startling clarity, his mind racing with the possibilities of what you might ask for.
—
dan heng looks in the dagger's reflection; a dishevelled and broken man stares back.
the cold metal digs deep into his palm, the sharp edge slicing into his skin. in that moment, he wants nothing more than to be free of it, than to plunge the blade into his own heart. he feels the pain all over again, the pain of not being able to hold you, to touch you, to be with you.
for he knows that no matter how tightly he grips the dagger, it will never be the same as holding your hand. he knows that no matter how deeply it cuts into his flesh, it will never feel the same as holding you close.
“i wish i never loved you.” your words echo painfully in his mind. “and i hope we never cross paths again. goodbye, dan feng.” he releases the dagger with a sudden twist of his arm.
if choosing you over xianzhou was wrong, then consider him a sinner, and if loving you this much is his downfall, then consider him already on his knees.
but was it worth everything? was it worth it to see the look of utter desperation on his face? was it worth it to see him break apart in front of you? you feel only resentment and satisfaction; you made him feel what you wanted him to feel, you made him suffer for you.
the blade falls from his grasp, he stands amidst the shards of shattered illusions; the pain of your absence cuts deeper than any blade ever could.
perhaps in another lifetime, he can find you again.
for now, he honors your wish and only watches as you live on from the sidelines, yearning to be a part of your life again, even if only in his thoughts and dreams. he remains steadfast in his longing, a silent witness to the unspoken ache that lingers in the wake of your parting words.

author's notes!! (my line of thought when writing this lul)
1. you made him suffer for you. -> irony. vengeance. he made you suffer BECAUSE of him granting you immortality. 2. dragging the blade down to his chest, positioning the point directly over his heart. = "my heart has always been yours anyway." -> which reader says with “your heart is mine.” 3. “and i hope we never cross paths again. goodbye, dan feng.” -> reader refers to dan heng as dan feng, i wonder what that means. 4. perhaps in another lifetime, he can find you again. -> you're both evil asf ngl, yes he will find you, you can't die aka you can't leave (him). ^ the only reason why he doesn't keep pursuing u now is cus he promised to grant your wish which is "to never cross paths again". (wow, he's such a man of his words.) 5. reader kisses dh over the veil, deliberately denying him the satisfaction of any intimacy. can be seen as a form of "punishment", leaving him yearning for more.
ty for reading xx for each reblog i will write 100 words for pt2 /j (BUT DO REBLOG IF U ENJOYED!! and it might not be a slash jay after all heuehehheh)

April 13, Xi'an, China, Shaanxi Archaeology Museum/陕西考古博物馆 (Part 3 - Qin dynasty to Sui dynasty):
First up is one of many bronze edict tablets of the 2nd emperor of Qin dynasty, made in 209 BC. Inscribed upon it in Seal script is one of two edicts, specifically the one from the 2nd emperor of Qin dynasty (秦二世), which basically is a continuation of Qin Shi Huang's edict on standardizing all weights and measurements. Here Qin Shi Huang/秦始皇 is referred to as Shi Huangdi/始皇帝, where shi/始 means "origin", and huangdi/皇帝 means "emperor".

^The edict inscribed is as follows (this is my VERY rough translation, please take this with a grain of salt, I'm not great at reading Old Chinese; original text is on bottom right of picture):
“First year (209 BC; first year of 2nd Emperor of Qin's reign), [We] issued an edict to chancellors Li Si and Feng Quji: Shi Huangdi pioneered this effort to standardize all weights and measurements, since then all such edicts have been inscribed on bronze. Now that [We have] inherited this Huangdi title, [We] shall not refer to Ourselves as Shi Huangdi here. Likewise, should Our descendants continue to produce tablets of Shi Huangdi's edict, they shall not take credit for Shi Huangdi's achievements. [We] hereby inscribe this edict on the left, so that all may be clear."
Ever since Qin Shi Huang tried to standardize systems of measurements for the entire country, every dynasty since Qin dynasty has also done the same. These are the standardized weights and volume measurements (all made with bronze) from Western Han dynasty (202 - 8 BC). Those volume measurement tools are very much like oversized measurement spoons, since they are mostly used to measure liquids and grains (in ancient China grains can be measured by volume).

Looks like I forgot about this one in part 2, this is a bronze sword from Warring States period (475 - 221 BC), I believe. It's decorated with carved pieces of jade (some are on the scabbard, but the scabbard has presumably decomposed over time):

The painted and carved stone doorway to a Eastern Han dynasty (25 - 220 AD) tomb. The actual (double) doors are in the middle, and the pieces around them are the side jambs and the lintel. Note the animals, mythical creatures, and humans depicted. On the double doors, in order from top to bottom, there's a pair of Zhuque/朱雀/Vermilion Bird, a pair of symbolic door knockers shaped like a beast carrying a ring in its mouth, and a pair of oxen. On the top right and top left of the lintel piece, you can also clearly see the sun crow and the moon toad, respectively.

The layout of some Western Han dynasty (202 - 8 BC) mausoleums. Note that the "pyramids" on the model aren't stone pyramids like the Great Pyramid of Giza, they are actually fengtu/封土, or artificial mounds of earth on top of the actual tomb to symbolically seal the tomb (feng/封 means "seal" or "to seal"), and can serve as tomb markers. Fengtu can differ vastly in size according to the social status of the deceased, so the fengtu of imperial tombs are usually huge, some so big that they are like small hills. However, while Western Han dynasty imperial tombs have these square-ish fengtu mounds, in Eastern Han dynasty (25 - 220 AD) the fengtu mounds became circular, and imperial tomb fengtu have been circular pretty much ever since. But fengtu wasn't just reserved for the elites, common folk also built small circular fengtu mounds on top of graves (these graves are called fen/坟; graves without fengtu are called mu/墓), and this is still practiced today, albeit much more common in rural areas since there are less people and more land. When people tend to the graves of their family members and ancestors on Qingming Festival, if the grave is a fen grave, people would pile more earth on the fengtu to make it rounder as part of the upkeep process.

A set of pottery figurines of entertainers from a Western Han era tomb. I love how they set the display up here, you can practically imagine the music and the dancing

More pottery figurines from Western Han era tombs

Western Han era hollow clay bricks depicting the Four Symbols/四象 of the cardinal directions: Qinglong/青龙/Azure Dragon of the East, Zhuque/朱雀/Vermilion Bird of the South, Xuanwu/玄武/Black Tortoise of the North, and Baihu/白虎/White Tiger of the West.

Left: a piece of intricately painted lacquered wood, I forgot where it's from but it was probably a piece of decoration on a larger artifact. Right: a piece of gold decoration inlaid with turquoise from Western Han era

The biggest decorated yubi/玉璧 (jade disc with hole in the middle) found so far, from an early Western Han dynasty tomb. Its diameter is 43.2 cm (~17 inches). If you zoom in, the inner band is decorated with these almost tadpole-like little swirls, and these are called gu pattern/谷纹, since they might represent sprouting rice kernels. The outer band is decorated with 4 sets of kuilong patterns/夔龙纹 and 4 sets of dragon-phoenix patterns/龙凤纹. It's speculated that the patterns here together depict the universe, and the hole in the middle is where the spirit of the deceased will travel through. This particular yubi also has 六六十一 ("six hundred and sixty-one") carved discreetly on the side, presumably a "serial number" left by the artisan who crafted this piece.

Decorated backs of bronze mirrors. I didn't take a picture of the plaque so I'm unclear on what time period these are from (may or may not be from the time period indicated at the beginning of the post):

Left: a hand-held incense burner. Right: a particular type of incense burner called a boshanlu/博山炉, so named because the lid was made to look like a mini mountain

Various Northern Zhou dynasty (557 - 581 AD) painted pottery figurines. Below middle arranged in a circle is the metal pieces on a belt.

Sixteen Kingoms era pottery entertainer figurines:

Thoughts on this pist? The three pillar theory of Azula?
I think it's a shame that it started out as a genuinely good analysis that wasn't neglecting either Azula's "evil" side nor her "good/innocent" side, and was quickly derrailed into nonsense that either lies about or grossly misremembers canon events.
Here are the five mistakes that ruined this analysis (and plenty of others).
1 - Unwillingness to accept that, while Azula is wrong about Ozai, she is 100% right about Ursa
Ozai was an abusive parent towards both of children. Ursa was a better parent - this does not mean she was perfect.
We see her spending time one-on-one with Zuko, and sometimes including Azula in it, and looking happy when her children are seemingly getting along. So far, so good.
But she doesn't spend one-on-one time with Azula, Bryke describe Zuko as Ursa's FAVORITE, and Zuko himself does not defend his mother when Azula says she loved him more. Not so good.
When Zuko throws bread at the turtleducks and hurts one, Ursa is horrified, but only reprimands him a little before hugging him and playfully explaining to him why what he did was bad. Through the rest of the episode, we constantly see her either telling Azula to not speak the way she does or scolding her harshily - without ever explaining the reason why. Zuko, the year-old, is the only person that bothers to explain things to Azula (like Iroh coming home early because he's grieving and how that's not weakness) and question her in an attempt to force her to put herself in someone else's shoes (asking how she'd feel if their cousin wanted their dad to die).
Ursa's 10-year-old son, even when in a fit of rage, did a better job than her at parenting her 8-year-old daughter.
And, finally, this person mentions the comics as "proof" of Azula just "not understanding" that her mom totally was treating her and Zuko the same, unlike their dad.
In the comics, Ursa ignores her daughter, even she's in the room. She wakes Zuko up to say goodbye when she's banished, so he'll know he was loved, but doesn't do the same to Azula, meaning their last interaction was a fight. She then willingly forgets her own children, and then she has her memories back she rarely ever bothers to mention that Azula, who is in the middle of a psychotic episode, is missing. There's no concern for her well-being, only "Oh, I wonder how my OTHER daughter is doing." Can't even say her fucking name.
Ursa played favorites and it damaged her daughter. The mirror scene is quitely literally Azula desperately wanting Ursa to treat her like she used to treat Zuko - explaining what she did wrong, how she can be better, and assuring her that she is loved. The only time Azula is treated fairly by her mother was literally a hallucination.
2 - Bizarre need to make every mundane thing Azula does be connected to/a result of some pathological condition
Azula is a manipulative person, no one in their right mind can deny that - but I gotta laugh when people act like her giving her mom puppy-dog eyes and repeating the line Ursa probably used to make her kids play together is on the same level of her manipulating Long Feng, or that her playing a prank on Zuko and Mai is no different from messing with his head in "Avatar State."
Just because she is villain, doesn't mean everything she does has an evil, hidden motive. We first hear "Azula always lies" when she tells Zuko THE TRUTH about their dad going to murder him.
No one believes someone who is NEVER honest. No one gets attached to someone that is NEVER kind. Not dick move is a result of someone's greatest flaws. A child telling a white lie is not the same as some crazy scheme to manipulate someone.
3 - Not understanding that unhealthy/selfish love is not the same as FAKE love
I don't think I've ever been more mad at a line in an analysis about Azula (which is saying a lot) than I was when I read this person claim that Azula didn't genuinely love Mai and Ty Lee and justified with the absurd sentence "People don’t fall apart the way Azula did because somebody they love leaves them."
Yes, they do. When you have a ton of problems, be it psychological ones or life-problems, having the people you care about turn away from you can absolutely make you spiral out of control. You don't even need some kind of unhealthy, excessive dependence on them for that to be the case. Losing people is very painful, and during low points a great deal of pain can fuck you up.
Azula's dynamic with them is not healthy, but that doesn't mean her love isn't real. And I don't mean it in a "It's real FOR HER", no, it's just 100% real, plain and simple.
If Azula didn't care about them, she would have never done things like not punish Mai for blatanly disregarding her orders in The Drill, or apologize after making Ty Lee cry, admit she was JEALOUS, and then ask advice. She'd sure as hell not have conversation with her "mom" (herself) about how she hurt them and abused their friendship/her authority over them.
She loves her friends, but she was never taught how to have a normal, equal relationship with anyone. She was raised to see things as a matter of who is in charge and who is subordinate. She is the princess, therefore it's her right to put her wants and needs before that of her friends. She even says to "Ursa" that she doesn't have the option to NOT act like that, because "fear is the only reliable way."
That is a key factor of Azula's tragedy, because her relationship with Ozai is the center of her universe, it is the basis of all other relationships in her life - and it is rooted in her never doing anything to displease him because she's terrified not only of the potential punishment, but of also losing that bond. So she uses fears to keep others close to her, not realizing that if she didn't do that they wouldn't WANT to cut ties with her.
(Also, fuck me, I nearly punched my computer when I read "Ty Lee ran away with the circus to be free of Azula." She literally tells us it was about her bad relationship with HER PARENTS AND HER SISTERS. It had nothing to do with Azula - what is it with people and this obsessive need of blaming my girl for things we KNOW weren't her fault?)
4 - Not understanding that Zuko is more than just Azula's rival/the exemple of what happens when you displease Ozai
Azula loves her brother. According to the lead writer of the show, Zuko is the person Azula loves the most (after Ozai, hence all the tension in their relationship).
Azula didn't know Aang had any chance of survival until Zuko let it slip - when they were ALREADY home, meaning the plan to blame him for everything if Aang survived could not possibly exist yet.
In the following episode, she warns him to be careful when visiting Iroh, otherwise people could think they were plotting together. Zuko asks what she's gaining by letting him know, and she says she's just looking out for him - and it never comes back, because she was not lying. She WAS taking care of him.
The Last Agni Kai hits so hard because they COULD have had a good relationship if things were different. If Ozai and Ursa hadn't played favorites. If Ozai wasn't abusive. If Zuko hadn't left after Azula brought him home, or if Azula had understood WHY he left.
Even in "The Spirit Temple", one of the few comics that are actually good, Azula says she wished their mom had let Ozai kill Zuko... yet we see that her ideal, happy life includes her loving, unscarred brother that is super proud of her. She spends the entire comic saying Zuko is weak and a coward who can't face her, yet when she sees "him" (an hallucination) directly confroting her about her own mistakes and the pain she caused, demanding her to apologize, it is Azula herself who runs away to hide from him.
Azula hurt her brother many times, and she knows that - and she is in denial about the guilt she feels over it because feeling guilt over hurting someone who is "lesser" is a weakness and an imperfection, and she needs to be strong and perfect all the time.
If you disregard her conflicting feelings on her brother, you disregard half her character.
5 - Forgetting that Azula is a child soldier under Ozai's orders
This is THE big one, guys. It's astounding how people just forget that Ozai isn't just Azula's abusive parent, he is the absolute monarch that can legally punish her if she displeases him.
Does she repeatedly fight Zuko because of their rivalry? Sure. But half the time she's doing it because Ozai literally gave her the mission to do so.
Does she threaten Ty Lee at the circus because she doesn't like being told "no"? Yes... but also because Ty Lee would be a valluable team member, and she needs a small elite team to properly do the task Ozai gave her.
Even the Last Agni Kai happens in the context of "Ozai just told Azula that he's trusting her to protect defend their throne."
There's a reason why, at "The Beach", she can handle pretending to be regular girl instead of a princess, but is CONSTANTLY on "battle mode", trying to turn a game into a war, praising a guy's outfit by sayind it'd make thousands drown at sea with how sharp it is, and why her flirting game consists of "We'll take over the world together!"
She grew up seeing violence be normalized and glorified every second of the day, to the point that things don't even register to her as being violent at all anymore.
Of course she's toxic and full on hostile in her relationships, no matter how much she cares about the person in question: All she's ever known is war, and Ozai deliberately blurs the lines to make his abuse of her and Zuko seem normal.
You can't disregard "Ozai will punish me if I don't do this" as a factor when talking about Azula.

[China Tang Dynasty]Chinese Armor:The Dunhuang Heroes | 敦煌英雄
The ShaZhou/沙洲(China Dunhuang, old name) is still there, and the Tang Dynasty is still there!

The yellow sand flowing through fingers represents the lost youth and blood and tears of the Guiyi Army(归义军) of the Tang Dynasty in Dunhuang. They are not quicksand but the shining golden soul of the Tang Dynasty army.
This series of works is inspired by the upcoming Chinese Tang Dynasty historical film "Heroes of Dunhuang/敦煌英雄".

The film tells the story of the Guiyi Army in the Tang Dynasty. After the An Lushan rebellion broke out, the Tubo/吐蕃 invaded Shazhou/沙洲 (now Dunhuang City, Gansu Province China). In 848, Zhang Yichao/张议潮 led his people to revolt and drive out the Tubo rulers, recovering Shazhou and starting the tragic story of the Guiyi Army for 200 years.
The story revolves around Zhang Yichao, a general in the late Tang Dynasty of China, who led the people of Shazhou and other places to break free from the rule of the Tubo/吐蕃 nobles.
Zhang Yichao (Chinese: 張議潮 or 張義朝; pinyin: Zhāng Yìcháo; 799−872) was a Chinese military general and politician of the Tang dynasty who was a resident of Sha Prefecture (Chinese: 沙州; pinyin: Shāzhōu, in modern Dunhuang, Gansu,China). When the Tibetan Empire/吐蕃 plunged into civil war, he led a rebellion, capturing several cities and reverted the area's allegiance to the Tang dynasty. He subsequently conquered the Hexi Corridor and governed it as the military commissioner (jiedushi) of Guiyi Circuit (headquartered in modern Dunhuang) under nominal authority of the Tang emperors.
Following the An Lushan Rebellion, the Tibetan Empire conquered the Sha and Gua prefectures of the Tang dynasty in 781. Han population of the locality remained. By 851, the Tibetan Empire which had ruled the southern Tarim Basin and modern Gansu region since 790 was being torn by civil war.
In the second year of Jianzhong (781),Sha Prefecture, which had held out for many years, also fell. After the fall, the people of Hexi were ravaged by Tubo. Adult males became slaves, farming and grazing; the elderly and weak were killed, and some were "cut off their hands and eyes" and then abandoned. The people wanted to return to the Tang Dynasty day and night.
During his growing years, Zhang Yichao personally experienced the brutal rule of Tubo, which aroused his anger. Feeling the desolate scene of the people's livelihood under the rule of Tibetan Empire/吐蕃, Zhang Yichao sympathized with the people's suffering and had great respect for Feng Changqing, a famous general who was framed by the eunuch Bian Lingcheng in the suppression of the " An Lushan Rebellion". He personally write a"Feng Changqing Death Letter"
The "Zhang Huaishen Monument/张淮深碑" records that Zhang Yichao "discussed military affairs and swordplay, and studied martial arts classics" on Sha Prefecture. He believed that "the fate of Tibetan Empire was over", so he "vowed to return to his country, with no doubt in his determination." To this end, he began to accumulate power and seek support from many parties, such as:
1.Dunhuang's prestigious and influential families such as the Su, Zhang, and Li clans had numerous members and substantial strength. They made significant contributions during Zhang Yichao's uprising and the reconquest of Hexi Corridor.
2.Buddhist monks and disciples. Despite being highly respected by the Tubo for his profound knowledge of Buddhism, the eminent monk Hong Bian of Hexi was appointed 'Chief Executor of the Vinaya and Teacher of Conduct' but 'longed for his homeland and wished to be under the Imperial wind,' so he did his utmost to assist Zhang Yichao in reclaiming Shazhou. Buddhism in the Western Regions was thriving, with a large number of followers, and the extensive influence of these monks among the people instilled a deep-seated spirit of resistance against Tubo, driven by their influence;
3.Heroes and righteous men. Figures such as Zhang Yichao's trusted subordinates Deputy Anjing and tribal leader Yan Yingda (also known as Shang Yanshin) were renowned local heroes.

↑<Zhang Yichao Leading the Army Mural>: The man on the left, wearing red, is Zhang Yichao.
It was with the great help of these people that Zhang Yichao clearly put forward the slogan of "returning to the country" and widely organized and united forces from all sides.
After the 9th century, the strength of the Tibetan Tubo Empire continuously declined, with frequent internal turmoil. During the Huichang era (841-846 AD), Tubo Empire suffered consecutive years of disasters and famines, leading to widespread starvation and epidemic, with corpses lying next to each other.
During this period, the Tibetan Tubo general Lun Kongre led five thousand cavalry to Gua Prefecture, plundering the eight prefectures of Hexi including Shanshan and Kuo. This action not only stirred great resentment among the people of Hexi but also caused discontent among his subordinates, who all desired to rebel against him.

↑China Dunhuang Mural Showing Zhang Yichao departure
When the time was ripe, Zhang Yichao launched a rebellion in Sha Prefecture in the second year of Dazhong (848 AD), leading his forces in a fierce battle to expel the Tibetan garrison. After the Tibetan army retreated, they gathered reinforcements from the surrounding areas and besieged Sha Prefecture again. Zhang Yichao led his troops out of the city and defeated the Tibetans, finally establishing a foothold in Sha Prefecture
This unrest quickly spread like wildfire and even caused major turmoil within the Tibetan Empire. Tibetan historical texts record that this rebellion '起于康,遍及全藏,如鸟飞百影,四面楚歌,天下大乱' Lun Kongre also rebelled, seized power within Tibet, proclaimed himself prime minister, and engaged in mutual slaughter with the Tibetan military governor of Shanshan, Shang Bipib."
In 863, Zhang Yichao led a group of 7,000 Han and non-Han soldiers to capture Liang Prefecture (涼州, in modern Wuwei, Gansu).
In 866, Zhang submitted a report stating that the Uyghur chieftain Pugu Jun (僕固俊) had recaptured from the Tibetan Empire Xi Prefecture, Ting Prefecture (庭州, in modern Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang), Luntai (輪台, in modern Ürümqi, Xinjiang), and Qingzhen (清鎮, modern location unknown)—apparently implying that Pugu Jun did so under his command.
In 867, Zhang Yichao visited Chang'an and paid homage to Emperor Yizong of Tang. Yizong made him a general of the imperial guards and kept him at Chang'an. Yizong also commissioned Zhang's nephew Zhang Huaishen (張淮深) to serve as the acting military governor of Guiyi. He died in 872, probably while residing at Chang'an.

Jade Dragon’s Iron-Clad Camellias [3]
Dan Feng x Reader
[ao3] or #df-camellia on my profile!
There are things which you always finish first, mostly those you don’t enjoy.
Buying groceries could prove hard at times, and so you were reduced to three locations ran mostly by servants of richer Xianzhou natives. You had time in recent days to come by, given the newly remade schedule of your work—something rather pleasing. Seeing your own, despite the differences, was as comforting as it could be infuriating.
Metals and ores needed for forgery were more accessible than back then, thanks to the image of the figure you’ve created; life was slowly mellowing out, certain things just needed to be dealt with faster than the other ones. Groceries before your hobbies, and then gathering before forging.
The new spear was what proved to be a nuisance.
A weapon of this caliber could take months to be done(proven by the many weapons you’ve created since owning the forgery), then again Dan Feng was offering what he claimed to be a special sort of treatment. And, despite his constant pestering about the smith, the weapon was slowly being finalised.
It would be easier -and faster- if he didn’t insist on intruding. You could not let anyone see you work—not only were you not Yingxing, you also didn’t have a license; something that could only be signed off by an immortal supervisor. While technically Yingxing was such a figure, he could not help you. After all he would have to come and present himself to authorities, something he couldn’t possibly execute from the confines of your skull.
The sound of bristles echoed and muffled your thoughts as you swept away the leftover pieces of metal chiseled the night before, the floor creaking after each step you took. The dim light long became your friend, eyes having adjusted over the years of darkness—each sweep of the broom cleared some of the wooden floor, although it was stained beyond repair.
You didn’t bother washing it anymore.
The sound of your sweeping and your footsteps was joined by a soft ring floating through air, its voice as annoying as it was soothing. You only tipped your head towards the entrance, and Dan Feng’s face softly tilted towards the upper corner of the doorframe.
”One was not aware of a bell before.” He noted, and he was correct. The bell was but a recent development, after tiring days of tolerating his presence.
You were made aware of his figure thanks to the small item you've made at least—that was the intention. Making yourself stand properly, you leaned the broom against the darkened wall of the forgery, keeping your hand on it still. The furnace did not spit heat today. All the fire in the room was the fire in your mind.
“We are closed. Cleaning day.”
The Vidyadhara glanced at you, at your broom, and then towards the furnace. “While One’s weapon is queued up?”
You took a deeper breath in, hand tightening against the item. It was rough to the touch, a new broom not yet smoothened down. The wood bit into your skin unpleasantly—irritating the scarred inside of your palm, knuckles nearly turning white.
“I don't question Master’s choices.” You lied through your teeth. Working on the new spear proved to be difficult due to constant intrusions, and you've long decided to not work at it during daytime. It appeared that you really would not come back to your natural schedule unless the weapon was done. You’d have Dan Feng off your shoulder.
That's precisely why nothing was prepared for forging. The tools hung like they were hanging before, everything as clean as it could be in those conditions—only a fool would believe any craft was done today.
Dan Feng nodded. “That's a shame. Ask on One's behalf about the state of the spear then,” he spoke as clear as ever, tone commanding. It made you want to get out of your skin. “One shall gather the news next time.”
For a High Elder of Vidyadhara, power was all that mattered. Same went for Dan Feng, both because of his need for combat, and for the preceptor’s need for authority.
The question lingered on the tip of your tongue, falling out unintentionally.
“High Elder, why show up personally?”
It was something he did not expect to be asked.
You knew what he must've believed himself to be, Inhabitant Lunar Dan Feng—the Higher Elder of Xianzhou Loufu’s Vidyadhara, or some even more elaborate of a title.
He had servants at his side, and he was of importance according to other immortals of Xianzhou. So, why show? Why try to put in all this effort?
You bit the inside of your cheek, the bastard must've thought that he was lowering himself to the people's level by coming here. He must've assumed authority, did he believe doing that would bring his weapon any more effort?
“It is a serious matter for One.” Was all he said.
Alas, a client is a client.
—
The news of the forgery spread like water after the tsunami, reaching the ears of the Scalegorge Waterscape, and the Sea Palace.
New talents in Loufu were nothing unseen. Within his life, the High Elder witnessed the rise and fall of many; spare for this one. Weapons which are unique and not mass produced, tailored. Swift and merciless, especially against dealing with those mara struck.
Weapons which hurt.
No ordinary person could afford such a commision—novel yet expensive, another part which seemed to tickle his already hoarding-oriented senses. After a reconnaissance ordered by the High Elder, he was informed that the forgery did not accept all commissions, either.
An exclusive treat indeed—something elusive, uncommon. Right for the Vidyadhara’s taste; considering the many items lining the Palace and the ‘gardens’, he simply could not think otherwise.
A rare pearl within his necklace of many, something so simple, yet necessary.
The High Elder was faintly aware of his tendencies to have and wield. Such is the fate of a Vidyadhara after all; leftover traces from their Draconic predecessor, little quirks and needs which could show right away, or take a timeline to unravel.
One of those traits for Dan Feng was his inability to tolerate certain things; rejection, events out of his control and especially—whatever it is that he cannot have, cannot know.
Whoever Yingxing believed himself to be, he could not be as important as to omit the High Elder’s gaze. And so, once a servant delivered the news, Dan Feng felt.. strange. Years have passed since someone last declined the offer made in his might and benevolence—it was unthinkable to even consider it happening.
“His assistant has said—“
The Vidyadhara pulled his hand up, his sleeve spilling downwards to pool at his elbow.
”It does not matter, then. You’re dismissed.”
Curt and to the point, but Dan Feng needed no explanation. His invitation to meet in the palace was rejected, and now he was left to figure out exactly what went wrong. Something akin to burn in his chest, a heat in his veins and a tight grip on his mind. The Vidyadhara was unable to identify what the feeling was, and as such chose to resolve the matter personally.
After mulling over it for longer than necessary, he rose from the carved seat, leaving the hall. The walk towards the exit was lined with high ceilings and plasters lining the edges, pillars and tiles. The surrounding area—usually lined with turquoise—shimmered in many different colours, each window composed of thousands of shards. Parts of it bore a different shade, stuck together with gold-like metal.
His steps echoed, and he didn’t face the many decorations, and he didn’t stop to appreciate the doors either, pushing through till the sun temporarily blinded him. Dan Feng’s pupils thinned visibly. If the smith refused to meet him, he would stoop down to meet his level.
Persistence always paid off. Something preceptors taught him, and something he learned himself. To have is to persist, be it in hard work or otherwise—Dan Feng was no stranger to that.
But how long can you throw the bait, if the fish learned what it is?
He has tried before, through extending an invitation by his own servant. And then he went as far as to extend an invitation through an assistant, having to leave Scalegorge Waterscape solely to do it. He, in his expensive silks and thick fragrances, has come and found nothing that he looked for—something that didn’t improve no matter his frequent visits. Catching the smith off guard proved to be futile.
The High Elder was a moderately busy man. Managing the affairs of Vidyadhara and controlling the council of preceptors, paired with seeking an utmost appropriate weapon. He was used to reaping results, and for the first time in forever he was left with neither results, nor the strange ease he felt when getting them—the more he tried, the more it evaded him.
Day after day of him trying, his focus was no longer the weapon.
It was the elusive figure of a mystical smith. Because Celestinae and Foxians might have given up—but not him. Not a vidyadhara, and certainly not the High Elder who oversaw everything relating to the affairs of his people; especially not Dan Feng, whose first and foremost trait was not just ambition, but determination.
From results came a thrill, and this time, it was not here. Something so obvious that he was used to; tilling the land brings fruits most ripe and sweet, but the flowers withered before their transformation, leaving Dan Feng to look at the petals scattering in the winds.
Enough was enough.
A man who had what he wanted, was a man who never let things slip. Be it minor crimes, or antiques from ancient eras left by his predecessors. Dan Feng remembered how he felt then—when he was entrusted with the relics of Vidyadhara. A heavy stone from his heart, thrown off temporarily.
And now it was back, weighing not just as stone, but as a boulder.
He’d find that little Celestinae smith and teach them a firm lesson of subordination. No one rejects High Elder’s request; not another Vidyadhara, not a Foxians, and definitely not a Xianzhou native.
With the need for justice came his shift. Dan Feng no longer only cared about the weapon; a man so picky and hard to please—no, he did not need the weapon. He needed something he could not have, something far more pleasing than a spear. He needed Yingxing—and, once he had him, then he’d get his weapon.
The more Yingxing ignored his appeals, the more firm in his goals he became. Because who are you to reject your High Elder’s request? As if he was nothing—as if he did not matter.
It took time to find space for extracurricular activities, but he was no stranger to waiting for his trap to catch. It would not be enough to have a third party drag the smith to his feet for judgement; it was personal now, after all the chances he’s been given.
Dan Feng could bet his tail and a horn that this was deliberate.
With an excuse of a simple stroll, the High Elder descended from Scalegorge Waterscape to the Loufu’s main area.
The streets were spacious, occasional buzzing of the lanterns being the only thing that accompanied his steps over the wooden surface. He stood out like a beacon in his white vest and long sleeves, the night sky clear yet dark all the same. It was better on his eyes at least, and he could comfortably look around without having to squint. If it was up to him, he’d rather be nocturnal.
On his way to the forge he noticed many things, one being the absence of light in people's windows, and the lack of their colour. So unlike his, plain and see through. It was late—a load of time after midnight, but he didn’t know how much exactly.
Another thing was the trinkets, usually laid out near the doors, conveniently hidden in shadows—his palace was always full of light, even at night. Then again—this was the common folk he was dealing with.
Third, and likely most agitating, was the sound from the forge. Just as he had expected—if Yingxing never shows up during daytime and yet the progress is made, it must mean he works when no eyes can see.
Truly a cunning subject he was.
His steps were light, something hot bubbling in his chest, and his eyes involuntarily narrowed the more he thought about it. Despite the closed windows, the light—although weak, was fairly visible. And frankly, the echo of metal against metal was enough to prove his theory.
Dan Feng has thought about this for many days, weeks. Maybe even a month. Has it been a month already? More? He never counted time, why would he?
His approach was measured, stepping shy of the entrance, as if sliding between the grass in wait for the prey to make a move. All that was left for the snake to do was to slip inside. His hand slightly shifted towards the handle. And as always before, he twisted it, his touch delicate—to seamlessly open without a sound.
Dan Feng’s brows furrowed, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the doors. He gave it one more go, but they did not move, and the bell did not ring.
His throat felt tight, and for a moment an overwhelming feeling overtook his mind, creating something akin to a thought spaghetti, where he could no longer see where each string started and began.
The doors were locked.
Not only personal anymore, no, this was deliberately directed. His fingers slowly tightened against the knob, his knuckles turning paler than they were before. High Elder’s eye twitched.
He was no stranger to trickery, and while he wished things were easier, they evidently weren’t.
With a sharp move his other hand moved behind his head, long fingers gripping onto the metal hairpin that held parts of his hair. The black locks spilled free, perfectly straight despite their former confinement, going over his shoulders, while some neatly fell onto his back, covering the intricate design of his clothes.
He did come here with a purpose—if he was to show himself to the ever-elusive smith, he needed to look his best. Perhaps out of the sheer need to establish an authority, even if it was first meant to be an outer one; it would be useless to try and show it through actions, Yingxing clearly had no care for his status.
Dan Feng’s eyes lingered on the long pin, looking at its design, the branches sticking out from the end to create a pattern of a tree, accompanied with gemstone flowers at the ends. For a moment his gaze lingered.
The High Elder refused to think about it more than necessary. He shoved the sharp end of the pin right into the lock, a simple lock really—thick and rusty, aged. No later than that he let go of the knob, pointing his straightened palm parallel to the doors, turning it. Being the High Elder of vidyadhara gave him many tricks indeed, perhaps this would be considered abuse of power.
But the preceptors weren’t there to nag over his ear like old consorts, and a soft click was all he heard, right before—
The half of the hairpin that stuck out of the lock suddenly tilted downward with a ring, the metal which Dan Feng hadn’t realised to be fragile was now snapped. His eyes widened, and his fingers twitched, palm slowly curling into a fist.
Parting with one of his favourite hairpins wasn’t something he expected today. But, if it had to be sacrificed, then he had no regrets—well, it wasn’t all done for.
Yingxing owed him this; a repair would not be difficult.
Dan Feng pulled the metal out of the lock, holding it in his hand. And then he stared at the doors, ones he knew were unlocked, and he hesitated.
His chest felt a little tight, and something he hasn’t felt in a while bloomed in his mind. Last time it happened, he was still quite a youngling, boarding a Starskiff for the very first time in order to learn it. It wasn’t a sense of fear, but a sense of excitement. An eagerness to explore, to feel the unknown.
The High elder felt similar now, but he hesitated. He hesitated because it was too easy. He hesitated because it almost felt like cheating. This was no feat at all, and if anyone saw him on the street right now, he’d become a laughing stock. His mind whispered a simple answer; desperate.
His eyes narrowed once more; no, no. Why should he care? He is Imbibitor Lunae, the High Elder of Vidyadhara. He is Dan Feng.
With a final inhale he twisted the handle slowly, pushing the doors open. His hand shot up, using his innate talent of Cloudhymn to silence the bell before it even moved. The first thing he felt was the rise of temperature.
Near darkness, spare for the furnace and the light that hot metal emitted. The shadows around Dan Feng flickered like a candle’s flame, an occasional crackle accompanying the otherwise rhythmic thudding. Sharp noise, again and again, no longer dulled by the doors. Metal against metal, and the smith did not hear nor see him.
The air was thick with heat, weighing down on his lungs as he pressed on, his steps slow and deliberate until he finally saw the other end of the forge, where all the noise started. Where the artist was hammering, robed in tradition and dressed in work and mysticism, with an imposing stature deserving that of a smith. A man lost in the heat of work and ambition—surrounded by embers and flame.
Yet this is not what he saw—his eyes widened in bewildered surprise.
The assistant. Alone. Hammering away—measured and precise, unfaltering and confident. The Vidyadhara remained silent, his hand moving to the wall so he could seamlessly lean into it, melting into the shadow.
Each move was filled with confidence, hammer pulled upwards just to crash down again, over and over, timed. There was no hesitation, no second-guessing or regret. He watched each motion—not wasted, not random, but utterly and truly purposeful.
Dan Feng would’ve assumed the assistant to merely play with metal when the true smith was gone—a theory shattered instantaneously when the assistant turned the metal over to continue their craft.
Not clumsiness he expected no, it was skill and precision. Dedication you only get after many times of practice—efficiency.
Dan Feng felt a spark of fire in his throat, burning at it like an amber, his eyes narrowing from mild irritation. He’s been tricked—many times. Because you were no mere messenger. You were the smith.
And as his feelings simmered, he allowed them, his eyes not once leaving the figure in front of him. The anger inside Dan Feng made way for intrigue, and instead of speaking up like he should’ve, he left his lips sealed for what felt like a moment too long.
But he could no longer. High Elder pushed off the wall, taking a deliberate step into the light. No later than after he has spoken, your shoulders tensed. The hammer wasn’t raised for another strike, the upper half of your body twisting just enough to see him.
”Yingxing.”

TGCF communication array verbal password headcanons
Xie Lian: Lumpy Loquats
It's canon that it is something that makes Feng Xin laugh Everytime and that mu Qing thinks is stupid. This is what I came up with.
Feng Xin: Nan Yang
Literally is just his name. For the guy who just jangled up his 2 names as a disguise, I figured this suits him.
It's an easy password so other officials can remember easily so they can contact him when needed. It's also the only thing he could come up with that he'd remember himself.
Mu Qing: Li, yi, lian, chi, form the four pillars of a nation.
Mu Qing would choose something meaningful and classy. This is a Chinese proverb he might value as a cultivator.
He chose a longer password to confuse people. He wants people to mess it up so that they don't talk to him. If you can't get it right, you aren't worth his time. Because he is Mu Qing.
SXQ: swooosh
Wind sound, with 3 O's to be cute.
He Xuan: Peking Roasted Duck
Food. His password is some kind of food, i believe this wholeheartedly.
Hua Cheng: [An entire Prayer to Xie Lian]
It's canon that it makes Xie Lian blush so it's either something naughty or something about Xie Lian himself.
I headcanon that If you dare to call Hua Cheng, you need to pray to his highness first. No exceptions.

tgcf; Hua Cheng finds Fangxin Guoshi!Xie Lian before the massacre happens AU
it's been two, three years since the kidnapping attempt? Xie Lian's position in court is, ah, stable? his reputation as a mysterious and wise immortal master cultivator guy has settled, at least — who would have thought hiring that one very random street preformer to be Guoshi would work out so well!
someone paints a picture of the sword Fangxin Guoshi carries. Hua Cheng sees it and thinks; oh
if dianxia wants to raise the Yong'an crown prince, then dianxia is going to raise the Yong'an crown prince, no interruptions
Hua Cheng joins the Yong'an court by the way of money, forms a spy network through similar means, and becomes the good friend of Fangxin Guoshi because he really, really wants to and Xie Lian is very, very lonely
they spar a lot! it's very impressive. Lang Qianqiu finds it very cool
the entire court gossips about them. Xie Lian pretends not to know
Xie Lian finds out Hua Cheng is a ghost from Xianle which serves as a temporary explanation for what, exactly, is a ghost king doing hanging out in Yong'an.
they have a date in Ghost City — it ends with a scene with Xie Lian taking off his Fangxin Guoshi mask & Hua Cheng showing him his true form
Hua Cheng is like. Lang Qianqiu's uncle. he warms up to the kid, like, eventually, a little — he's not saying he likes him —
they have a Qi Rong fieldtrip! fun is not the way to describe it
Lang Qianqiu ascends
VERSION 1.
Lang Qianqiu ascends alone and, later, has a very awkward conversation with his Guoshi about maybe choosing his master (and uncle Hua Cheng) as Middle Court officials...? Guoshi? uh. why not?
XL: yeah so im a banished god. twice banished. for reasons! don't worry about it
HC: it might be possibly more awkard if you make me a Middle Court official
VERSION 2.
the three of them ascend together — the event is very destructive! Heaven ah. breaks? a little! but there's three of them, so that's. that's an explanation. for that.
it's a such lovely story — the crown prince of Yong'an, has ascended together with his two mentors after defeating the Green Ghost Qi Rong!
Xie Lian does not take off the mask. he just. doesn't! he means to, he thinks about it, he intends to do it, but enough time passes that it becomes awkward — Feng Xin and Mu Qing have introduced themselves to him! it would be just weird at this point...
Hua Cheng supports this wholly. Feng Xin and Mu Qing have no idea why this one guy in red hates them — well, there is that one guy in red who hates them, but there's no way in hell he ascended to Heaven!
Jun Wu realizes who Xie Lian is imidateley. he and Xie Lian have a conversation in which he agrees to allow for Xie Lian's stay in Heaven to remain anonymous — though he is a little preoccupied with stopping Heaven from falling down to really have time for plotting
a great opportunity for fun logistics-of-how-was-heaven-made-actually worldbuilding!
Jun Wu does not know who Hua Cheng is. Xie Lian doesn't tell him. it's funnier this way
He Xuan does know who, exactly, has ascended (again) and struggles not to laugh. he is one of the very few people well-informed enough to know how fucking hilarous this is
there are now three Calamities is Heaven
Lang Qianqiu is just happy his two mentors have ascended with him, really! very happy. Heaven seems to have been a little. uh. damaged. he'd hate to need to deal with it on his own!
the golden palace of lies collapses in some hilarous way as our heroes try to stop Heaven from falling down due to structual damage. Jun Wu's reveal speedrun
VERSION 3.
the three of them ascend together, but but it's known who Xie Lian & Hua Cheng are
divergence happens during the Qi Rong thing — Lang Qianqiu finds out about the stuff because Qi Rong figures it out
there's a whole scene — Xie Lian takes of his mask, all; yeah I'm the crown prince of Xianle, don't listen to my idiot cousin he's just terrible, he's always been terrible, your life isn't a lie — there are just shitty people in the world, sometimes, and, look, we stopped the tragedy, didn't we? — because in this AU they did; Hua Cheng has spies, the plot is over before it even begins, the massacre doesn't happen, Xie Lian does not kill Lang Qianqiu's father...
Qi Rong points out there is a fucking Devastation right there isn't he plotting things also?
Hua Cheng magic girl transformation into ghost king regalia, says some things about Xianle/Yong'an relations, and being a soldier while he was alive that mostly boil down to listen to what your Guoshi teaches, he's a wonderful amazing person the best in the world, the smartest, the most beautiful —
Lang Qianqiu finds that reassuring because that's just how Hua Cheng normaly acts, see, he's clearly here because he has a crush on Guoshi! it's not about revange or Yong'an at all, the man is just in love
Lang Qianqiu has some sort of a hero speech, very serious vow to be a good king and a good person and follow Guoshi's teachings! Xie Lian is very proud
they defeat Qi Rong with the power of friendship — and then the three of them fucking ascend
Xie Lian, no mask — Hua Cheng in ghost king regalia — Lang Qianqiu also there being the objectivley least interesting person in the room
every god in Heaven freakes the fuck out
it's a disaster, it's hilarous. He Xuan contacts Hua Cheng asking what the fuck he is doing. Hua Cheng just laughs
Xie Lian wants to leave, so bad — it feels like this situation would become a whole lot simpler if he and Hua Cheng weren't there, but he can't just leave Lang Qianqiu to this mess....
if Xie Lian leaves, so will Lang Qianqiu, really, if Heaven is to good for such an honorabile and good and just person as his Guoshi then maybe there is something wrong with Heaven (Hua Cheng is so proud)
HC: this is my second ascenshion and Guoshi's third ascenshion, so don't you worry, kid, we're old hands at this business
LQQ: I am worried for this reason exactly
Xie Lian has a whole thing trying to convince Lang Qianqiu to stay in Heaven even if they two do get kicked out for structual damage all I know it sucks but you're a prince, it would be very rude to tell the Emperor to fuck off —
LQQ: okay, so, how about this; if you two leave I cannot stay because your combined power wrecked Heaven so bad it might fall off the sky and I am not shouldering that debt on my own
XL: oh fuck I forgot about that
plot happens: heaven might fall down so we should deal with that! dealing with that is mostly a logistics thing. also, a war between realms might be around the corner.
somewhere in this there is a scene of Feng Xin snd Mu Qing trying to rescue Xie Lian & Lang Qianqiu from evil Hua Cheng's cluthes
#tgcf#fanfiction idea#if somebody wants to write this id love to read it#fangxin guoshi#hua cheng#lang qianqiu#xie lian#this has been gathering dust in my drafts for months#plot bunny for adoption

The FSYY Body Count List
…Because when you are trying to procrastinate an assignment, you'll focus your attention on anything that isn't the assignment, no matter how strange the subject matter is.
So here is a list of the individual Chan juniors' body count during the course of the FSYY novel. Fantastic creatures (non-sapient, not yaoguais that have cultivated a human form, but aren't regular animals either) are listed separately.
Nezha: 15 characters
-Li Gen the Yaksha (Qiankun Ring to the head)
-Ao Bing (pulled off steed with sash, Qiankun Ring to the head, tendons pulled out)
-Verdant Cloud Boy (archery accident)

-Gao Lanying (didn't get her needles out in time, knocked down, speared)
-Ding Ce (killed by the Qiankun Ring)
-Lu Renjie (knocked off his steed by the Qiankun Ring in a fatal blow)
Note: I didn't count the Colored Cloud Boy, Lady Shiji's other disciple that gets bonked by the Qiankun Ring, because his death is never confirmed, even though he was already "struggling for his life on the ground" when Shiji comes out of the cave.
Yang Jian: 13 characters, 2 creatures
-Chen Jiugong (speared)
-Zhou Xin (Skyhowler'ed, then chopped in half)
-Bi Huan (Skyhowler'ed, then speared)
-Wen Liang (tried to escape after being bricked by Nezha, got hit in the shoulder by Yang Jian's slingshot, fell off his horse, and died)
-Yu Hua (Leizhen Zi knocked him off his steed, Yang Jian finished him off with his polearm)
-Zhang Kui's mom (indirectly, he tricked Zhang Kui into killing her via transformation arts)

-Wu Long (Yang Jian turned into a golden rooster and pecked it to pieces)
-Yang Xian (tried to flee after seeing Yang Jian turn into a tiger, chopped in half)
-Dai Li (Skyhowler'ed, then speared)
-Guo Chen (speared)
-Lei Kun (speared)
-The Nine-headed Pheasant Demoness (indirectly: Skyhowler'ed, then decapitated by Zhou soldiers on the execution ground under Yang Jian's watch)
Creatures:
The Flower Fox Ferret, Mo Lishou's monstrous pet (Yang Jian burst out of its body after being eaten, tearing it into two halves in the process)
The One-horned Black Smoke Beast, Zhang Kui's magical steed (indirectly, same as Zhang Kui's mom)
Huang Tianhua: 7 characters
Chen Tong (Fire Dragon Dart sucked into Tianhua's flower basket, then decapitated by the beam of the Moye Sword)
The Four Mo Brothers (killed by the Heart-piercing Nail)
Yu Qin (killed by the Fire Dragon Dart)
Chen Geng (knocked off steed by the Fire Dragon Dart, then decapitated)
Yang Ren: 6 characters
Fang Yizhen (incinerated by the Five Fire Fan)
Li Ping (caught in the fan's AOE while trying to persuade Lv Yue)
Chen Geng (incinerated by the fan)
Lv Yue (incinerated by the fan)
Yu Xian & Yu Zhao (incinerated together)
Leizhen Zi: 5 characters
Xin Huan (Skyhowler'ed, then finished off by Leizhen Zi with a staff to the head)
Zhou Xin (Staff to the head)
Peng Zun (knocked off his steed via a staff to the shoulder, then decapitated)
Yu Guang (staff to the head)
Lei Peng (KO'ed with staff)
Huang Tianxiang: 4 characters
Feng Lin (speared)
Tao Rong (speared)
Gou Zhang (speared)

Jade Pipa Demoness (indirectly: decapitated by soldiers under his supervision)
Jinzha: 3 characters
Wang Mo (immobilized by the Dragon Stake, then killed with a sword)
Yang Sen (immobilized by Dragon Stake, killed with sword)
Dou Rong (indirectly: Jinzha immobilized him with the Dragon Stake, but Jiang Wenhuan made the killing blow)
Muzha: 2 characters
Li Xingba (killed with one of Muzha's twin flying swords)
Lady Chedi (killed with twin flying sword)
...
Final Thoughts
-If you count the creatures, Nezha and Yang Jian's kill counts will be equal, though several of Yang Jian's kills are indirect.
-Jiang Ziya: tfw your logistic guy, responsible for overseeing the supply line, has a body count as high as your designated army vanguard.
-Yeah, Yang Jian's official job in the Zhou army is the Grain Transport Officer. I think it really fits his personality——the clever, ruthless trickster who's also a mature, polite disciple.
-Though Leizhen Zi's kill counts can't match Nezha and Yang Jian, there are multiple descriptions of him knocking down whole sections of the city wall with a single staff strike. Maybe he's the anti-fortification specialist of the team or something. /lh
-Huang Tianhua: the ranged attacker who keeps trying to be a melee DPS. /j
-For real though, he seems to rely a lot more on the Fire Dragon Darts from a slain foe, and when the Heart-piercing Nail is used after the Mo brothers' demise, it only ends up going straight through Xin Huan's wing and the Winged Immortal's right arm.
-Yang Ren always gives me the impression of a soft-spoken bureaucrat who gradually discovered his inner pyromaniac after receiving the Five Fire Fan.
-My list is only counting the named characters, but everyone on this list who's still alive during the Ten Thousand Immortal Formation Arc are described as unleashing their might and treasures during the battle.
-Considering the AOE effects of some of these treasures, they probably send a lot more filler NPCs into the Investiture.
-BTW, there are 151 names on the Investiture who are labelled as having died in the Ten Thousand Immortal Formation. 123, if you leave out the 28 Lunar Mansions, who are killed by the 4 Immortal Swords seized from Patriarch Tongtian's previous formation.
-How many percent of those 123 kills each Chan Sect participant is responsible for is up to your imagination.
-Forget about the Nezha age discourse——Huang Tianxiang was probably about 10 when he made his first kill, since the text described his head as "still bald". If I remember correctly, in the Ming dynasty, before 10, most children had their heads shaved completely bald, or leaving only a few patches of hair tied up in a braid/bun.
-He's also 14 when he made his third kill, and 17 when he was executed by Qiu Yin. Four chapters prior, Huang Tianhua died to Gao Jineng.
-Jinzha and Muzha: tfw your total kill counts combined is only a third of your little brother's.
-The one detail I've observed is that Jinzha ends up rescuing/attempting to rescue Nezha, Huang Tianhua, Jiang Ziya, and Tianhua again (together with Muzha) after they get knocked down.
-I feel kinda bad for Muzha when I look at the numbers. He does cut off one of Lv Yue's arms after recovering from his first plague attack, though.

yanqing abundance + origin thoughts/theory
so, i was doing whatever and a thought came to me (story spoilers also there's a lot of text)
i took a look around the loufu and realized something; all of the people had essentially every hair color except blonde. the only exceptions are people not native to the loufu, such as luocha.

yk. the one who happens to be ON THE PATH OF ABUNDANCE
and who else has blonde hair?
YANQING.

yanqing's origins are relatively unknown, all we know is that jing yuan found him somewhere and decided to take him in for whatever reason. in yanqing's character story, it says that it's recorded in the military annals of the cloud knights how jing yuan discovered him, but not where.
yanqing mentions in his character introduction how he was RAISED BY THE GENERAL SINCE BIRTH which... like. what. ok thats actually crazy bc either
1) jing yuan took him from his parents when he was like a day old or something
2) he was given to jing yuan (although, this is unlikely considering it was mentioned jing yuan 'discovered' him)
3) jing yuan lied for whatever reason (to protect him)
4) jing yuan indeed found him when he was born, possibly from a fruit of the ambrosial arbor
in the pic above, yanqing says 'but as you know, children aren't grown on trees." is this foreshadowing? or just straight up dropping a hint that his 'birth' was not a natural one?
the ambrosial arbor was inactive for approx. 2579 years before the sedition of imbibitor lunae. after that, the seals on the arbor were weakened. i haven't exactly worked out the specifics yet, but since bailu was created around 700~ years before canon and is still a little kid, and dan heng was presumably an adult/teen when exiled, my guess is that if yanqing has the lifespan/growth rate of a xianzhou native, he would've been born sometime in between den heng's hatching and bailu's hatching, a little closer towards bailu's. but what could've happened during that time? please hear me out the next part is kinda crazy
my guess is that during the tampering of the transmutation arcanum to revive baiheng (and presumably to allow other species to become vidyadhara, although the wiki gave no source... i'll trust it for now), dan feng and yingxing fucked up and created yanqing in a fruit of the arbor, while during the transmutation arcanum ritual, bc dan feng previously fucked with it, it failed and created bailu (and separated his powers between dan heng and bailu)
now, this seems... really out there. how the fuck would yanqing and bailu, a presumably xianzhou native/humanoid and a vidyadhara, be created from the remains of a foxian? i'll start with yanqing. it was stated that after baiheng's death, only a few drops of blood and a tuft of her hair remained. dan feng and yingxing created yanqing in a fruit of the arbor (like some sort of hatching rebirth... but a fruit) using either the blood or hair (most likely blood) of baiheng. it was a somewhat failed attempt at reviving baiheng. yes, it created life from her remains, but it was not her (think how dan heng ≠ dan feng, and also how vidyadhara can be different genders than their previous incarnation). during the time he was in the fruit, it dyed his hair and eyes blonde/gold, and also created the ring around yanqing's eyes (his is unique, the other characters' eye rings if they have them are a lighter color while his is dark, yes ik silver wolf has it too but her's is different).

before bailu's hatching and after subduing jingliu, jing yuan eventually came across the fruit yanqing was being held in, or found him wandering about, probably recognized the blonde/gold as the effects of the abundance, and took him in because dude he's not going to kill a literal baby (even if he could). he knew it would be dangerous to give him to a regular family, so he took him in and trained him himself
for more info abt yanqing's connection to the vidyadhara, i suggest checking out this post by astralexpressarchives.
although he is not baiheng, he did take on aspects of baiheng's personality, such as her free will and even laughing/giggling while in battle. he also enjoys flying (although with his swords and not starskiffs) and even has eyelashes similar to her's. and, just like her, yanqing's missions would often be dangerous, but he would come out relatively unscathed.
now, about bailu. dan heng says she was created after dan feng's ritual failed. if you take a look at bailu, she strongly resembles baiheng, and even starts with the same 'bai'.
same hair, same eyes, similar eyelashes, she even has a similar eye ring to yanqing. there's not too much to say here. while yanqing got baiheng's personality and fighting spirit, bailu got her appearance. now, why did this happen? im thinking its because of dan feng's meddling with the transmutation arcanum. because of that, yanqing was born, but it was 'incomplete'. so while yanqing got one part of baiheng, bailu got the other. yanqing was made on purpose, while bailu was somewhat of an accident. maybe some of baiheng's 'life' from yanqing's creation was still there when bailu was created? idk
the funny thing is, their paths are like... the complete opposite. yanqing follows the hunt (although he was born of the abundance) and bailu follows the abundance (although she was presumably supposed to follow the destruction or hunt).
theory tldr; dan feng and yingxing fucked up and created yanqing and bailu out of baiheng's remains
this is a yanqing post, time to get back to yanqing. hooray! i took a closer look at yanqing's outfit, and noticed numerous leaf/plant symbols.
...which are closely associated with the abundance. especially the gold leaves.

this further solidifies my belief that yanqing has something to do with the abundance.
jesus christ that is. a wall of text. pls tell me ur thoughts on this whole thing, i took like 2 1/2 hours to write it and its 2:40 am so sorry if it doesn't make sense i just need to put these thoughts somewhere

Hiii, how are you? I hope you are doing ok! <3 sending love and hugs. I wanted to ask you... i think i remember something about tgcf having live action adaptation. Was that real or was just a dream i had or something? If it's real do you know if we will have it or what happened to the project? Idk if my mind made that up! sorry and thanks :)
Hiii Anon!
No, it's not some mad collective fever dream we all had, they really did film it (6 months of shooting between July 2021 and January 2022). Native title is 吉星高照 (Ji Xing Gao Zhao) English title is Eternal Faith.
If we ever get to see it is another matter, i probably don't need to say the main reason is because it's a danmei adaptation - it'll have a harder time passing the censors than the average cdrama. Since the popularity of other dangais it seems the censors have become stricter in any case. Job one is always going to be passing the censors.
While checking chinese websites and articles I did find several sources of a rumour that the site security punched a girl who was visiting the set. I can't vouch for the reliability of this but anything that can potentially attract criticism can delay a cdrama release further. Other criticisms include the casting of the male leads, how cheap the set design and costuming look, and a cancelled actress who may have to remain uncredited.
So it will need to satisfy the censors in order to be relased, as well as satisfy the general public and tgcf fans to be worth releasing and I'm not sure if it can do it all. If all goes well and it does ever pass censorship, we won't get a release date in advance. I don't know if you've ever experienced waiting for a cdrama release but you will not get much warning when it airs. It will likey drop with a couple days warning in form of internet rumours, or just completely out of the blue.
HAVING SAID THAT - another rumour is that a full costume bl drama like the untamed will be released internationally in Sept 2024, bypassing a Chinese release. It's just a rumour but it does make this webpage very interesting! But please remember everything above and not get too excited just yet 😂.
I'm gonna share some set photos just because 😍

Zhai Xiaowen as Xie Lian

Zhang Linghe as Hua Cheng/San Lang/Crimson Rain Sought Flower

Chang Huasen as Shi Qingxuan/Wind Master & Tian Xuning as He Xuan/Ming Yi/Earth Master

Vin Zheng as Nan Feng & Li Fancheng as Fu Yao (+ bonus Wind Master)

Liu Lingzi as Xuan Ji

Liu Jinyan as Ling Wen & Wang Yueyi as Female Wind Master

Xiao Kaizhong as Feng Xin/Nan Yang & Cai Yao as Mu Qing/Xuan Zhen

Bian Tianyang as Qi Rong/Prince Xiao Jing/Green Ghost

Lu Yuxiao as Yushi Hung/Rain Master. She played Shangguan Qian in My Journey to You, but as she was fairly unknown at the time of filming jxgz so there are no photos to be found of her as Rain Master 😩.
Anyway, let's all quietly try to will this into existence with physic powers etc.
Thanks for sending me an ask, have a lovely day anon!
