almost certainly not done messing with this one but i'm going to go insane if i don't share it, so here's ska cover of a pigeon pit song that i've spent the last couple days feverishly working on
composing the brass parts was really fun, and in general i've had a great time turning an alt-country song ska

yearnings
[✨ this was written for zelink week 2023 organised by @zelinkcommunity and is a companion piece to 'repast' and 'kin'] Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pairing: Link/Zelda Words: 1140
Despite all that time has taken from her, the Light Dragon can still recall names.
The skies in which she swims belong to Hyrule, and her sister dragons that she shares them with are Naydra, Farosh and Dinraal. Yet the Light Dragon no longer has a name, and her heart cries out in search of one — though she does not know why.
Each day at sunset, her sisters join her above the clouds. Sister, they say, come with us, to where the land meets the sky and where the mortal beings dwell. Each day, for many years, the Light Dragon cannot accept. She awaits another, one who will awaken on the Great Sky Island that she dutifully guards. This purpose, though its details are lost, burns within her.
When the swordsman finally awakens, the Light Dragon senses him immediately. She watches with muted curiosity as he begins to explore her island in the sky. Why had he come to this place? Were all the mortal beings so small? Soon she finds him on the ancient circular landing behind the island’s temple, and watches as the sword in his hand disappears in golden light. She is drawn to him then, called by a voice within: the swordsman must have a sword. Perhaps on the surface, where her sisters call to her, he will find another. Determined, the Light Dragon splits the clouds guarding the island from the world below. The swordsman does not wait; he leaps, surface bound. The Light Dragon follows.
The vast lands below swallow the swordsman whole. There are deep valleys that cut the earth and mountains that pierce the skies. There are churning rivers and yawning bays. There are open plains, marshy swamps, and rolling deserts. He must be out there, somewhere, and across all four corners of Hyrule the Light Dragon searches.
In winding canyons flooded with water, she meets her sister Farosh. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Farosh answers: None with valour and courage enough to impress me, sister.
Among rocky crags and cooled lava, in the shadow of a great volcano she meets her sister Dinraal. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Dinraal answers: Hyrule has seen many, sister, for blood flows here as easily as water flows to the sea.
Between gentle mountains, as snow feathers down, she meets her sister Naydra. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Naydra answers: Yes, he flies as we do, sister. I am sure he will visit you soon.
But he does not. The sorrow the Light Dragon feels at this is powerful and achingly fresh. Against her will, tears well in her eyes. She begs them not to fall; each time they do, they take more of her with them. She tries to hold on, and hold fast, but the tears fall anyway. The Light Dragon forgets why she was crying.
It is not long after this that he finds her. And it was as Naydra said; the swordsman could fly like the dragons, capturing the winds to soar through the sky. He lands softly on her back, his footsteps tickling, almost pleasant. Then he is holding onto her mane, holding very tight; is he worried he might fall? Then she can hear weeping. She hopes he is not unwell.
After some time, the swordsman speaks: “Is that really you, Zelda?”
She does not understand nor does she answer the question.
“Gods… you have the Master Sword. You’ve really had it all this time…”
Then he is moving, light feet padding about her mane. “Sorry, old girl, I’ve gotta take it from you.”
She is just thinking that she likes the gentle weight of him when a blinding pain rips through her head and down the length of her body. She lurches skyward, roaring, but the pain doesn’t stop, and it’s like something is tugging very hard on her head. It is not nice! Whatever it is should let go! It is her fur there! It keeps her warm! Let go! Let go!
The sky suddenly flashes white, and next she knows she is enveloped in clouds of shimmering gold. Calm washes through her and she relaxes, allowing herself to float. The swordsman is still there, murmuring: Hylia help me, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that’d hurt— Are you okay?
Yes, it is all going to be okay. She closes her eyes and recalls the final piece of her memories that had not yet slipped away; she has the sword, which she guarded much as she guarded her island in the sky. How this came to be, and why, is lost to her. But it is no matter. Her purpose is fulfilled. She is at peace.
After this, the swordsman visits her often. He brings her apples cooked in butter, which she eats even though she can’t really taste them, doing so because it seems to make him happy. Then he brings her flowers, threading them into her mane, which she likes for the soft pull of his fingers through her hair. Sometimes he comes to talk, telling stories of the surface, using words she doesn’t understand but enjoys for the sound of his voice. Sometimes he just comes to sit, clinging to her mane, always clinging.
Then, the last time he comes, she is sitting with him on top of the temple on the Great Sky Island, dozing. Her sisters have teased her for this. Sister beloved, what need does a dragon have for sleep? The swordsman sleeps, she has told them, and often sleeps for entire days. It seemed a pleasant activity to try, and she has found it helps her to enjoy the feeling of the sun on her back.
On this final day, she awakens to find the swordsman brushing her mane, running his hands through the strands.
“I have to go soon, Zelda,” he says. “I’ve stalled for a long time. I need to finish what you started.”
He has an apple in his hand, which she obligingly eats. “If I don’t come back, old girl, you know I love you, right? If there’s even a tiny bit of Zelda in there, I want her to know…”
Zelda. She yearns to understand this word. Is that a name? If it was, could it be hers? She does not know how to tell the swordsman this — that she can be his Zelda, if he wants. Instead she pushes her snout into his hand, nuzzling against him.
In response he wraps his arms around her, holding tight. At his back is a noble sword, in a scabbard of blue and gold. Then he lets go, runs a gentle hand across her fur one last time, and departs.
The Light Dragon Zelda returns to the sky, unmoved. He has left her before, and always returns.
Content to wait, she flies away free.

A Patreon request for rome.and.stuff (Instagram) - Pachyrhinosaurus perotorum… that I went a bit overboard with lol. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to draw my favorite ceratopsian, and to digitally adapt my old Pachy marker drawing design.
Tumblr media
So! Pachyrhinosaurus! As seen above, there were three known species of Pachyrhinosaurus, living in different locations and eras in Late Cretaceous North America.
The oldest, P. lakustai, was native to the Wapiti Formation of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. It’s known for the extra spikes it has at the center of its frill.
The slightly younger P. canadensis was native to the lower Horseshoe Canyon Formation and the St. Mary River Formation of Alberta and northwestern Montana. It was the largest of the three.
The youngest, P. perotorum, was native to the Prince Creek Formation of Alaska. As this ceratopsid seemingly stayed put during the long, dark, cold Alaskan Winters, it likely had adaptations for keeping warm.
Tumblr media
The depiction of a “woolly” Pachyrhinosaurus was first popularized by Mark Witton as a speculative work, but the trope has prevailed. While many paleontologists find a heavy feather covering on a centrosaurine to be highly unlikely, and maintain that the animal’s size and homeothermy would have kept it warm enough, we still have no skin impressions to suggest that P. perotorum was fully scaly. So a feather coating is not completely out of the question (though it is unlikely). Still, I love the look of a woolly Pachyrhinosaurus and how it challenges our previous conceptions of non-avian dinosaurs. Stranger things exist in nature. I had to include a “woolly” option, especially since I already use the guy as my avatar on my paleo Instagram account, SaritaPaleo.
Tumblr media
Pachyrhinosaurus was particularly unique in that it seemingly traded off something that had previously worked for other ceratopsians, horns, for a large nasal boss instead. For Pachyrhinosaurus, a battering ram worked better than a sword.
It was herbivorous, using its strong cheek teeth to chew tough, fibrous plants. Perhaps during the dark and cold Winters, P. perotorum would have also dug for roots or even scavenged carcasses. At any rate, from observations of their unusually conspicuous growth banding, it appears growth for P. perotorum would have been stunted during the harsh Winter, but was extremely rapid in the warmer months, an adaptation for the Alaskan climate.
Tumblr media
The tundra of the Prince Creek Formation housed a surprising amount of diversity. Pachyrhinosaurus perotorum would have lived alongside smaller ceratopsians like Leptoceratopsids, as well as other ornithischians like the pachycephalosaurine Alaskacephale and the hadrosaurid Edmontosaurus. Theropods such as Dromaeosaurus and Saurornitholestes, as well as a yet unidentified giant Troodontid, lived here as well. P. perotorum’s main predator would have been the tyrannosaur Nanuqsaurus. Small mammals were also somewhat common here, such as Cimolodon, Gypsonictops, Sikuomys, Unnuakomys, and an indeterminate marsupial.
(Btw, the request tier for Patreon starts at only $5 a month. 😉 Link is pinned at the top of my blog.)

Owlcatober - Day 15 - Flying
The fledging of a mythic angel for @owlcatober.
[Ao3 Link]
====
The canyons south of Drezen were wide and generous, and offered some protection from the howling winds of the Worldwound. It was for this reason that Ulbrig had preferred to fly through them, and to race down as Arueshalae became more confident and was ready for good-natured sport.
Now, however, those two had something different to do.
"Come on, warchief!" Ulbrig teased, having already partially-shifted into his griffon form so that he had his own brown-feathered wings sticking out from his back, "It's time to fledge!"
"I'm still not sure about this," Elaina admitted as she looked at the river at the bottom of the canyon. It was sufficiently deep to catch her, and Nenio (who was taking notes) had provided her with a day-long Featherfall spell just for this purpose, and she was wearing a double-padded bascinet to protect her head, and Arueshalae was there to catch her. But still!
Her nervousness was obvious, though, particularly as the golden-white feathers of her two new body parts fluttered. Transforming into an angel was going to come with such wings - she had intellectually known it for some time - but finally manifesting them as the mythic power transformed her was something else.
"You said that the wings react like you always had them," Arueshalae offered, holding her now non-demonic hand out. "You can fly."
“When I am not thinking about them,” she pointed out. “And I am very much thinking about how I am about to jump off a cliff.” As if to emphasize the point, she was consciously driving her wings to flap to try and reassure herself. One flap at a time - keep a steady but high pace to support her weight. She will need to do so even harder once she puts on her plate harness and other wargear. The Hand could fly - and would fly again - but now she needed to.
"Come on," Arueshalae tugged her hand again, "You can do it. I know you can. Don't you want to fly through the night? With me?"
"Of course I do!" she answered back, "but-"
A large burly hand suddenly pressed against her shoulder, and she went over the edge. While no doubt there was a comedic scene of everyone staring at whoever had pushed her, right now Elaina had bigger problems. Namely, plummeting off the cliffside. Ten feet per second was still a fast pace!
Falling was not a new sensation, from being knocked in the back by the quintain during training, planar travel through rifts, or even Deskari cutting open Kenabres. This should have been an old hat for her.
Of course, back then she did not have two feathery capes behind her, slowing her down further as they reflexively expanded to create drag. She could feel the wind pushing past her - and the ground coming for her. Flailing her arms, she tried to orient herself - like a bird, face towards her destination. Flap the wings - flap, flap, flap!
She slowed down, and finally began to level off, until finally she managed to pull herself upright, a steady pace of her wings keeping her aloft as she looked around. Arueshalae and Ulbrig had both jumped after her, but were far enough back there had been a clear delay. The shifter was laughing, while Arueshalae's expression was contorted - from fear, to laughter, to anger, then back again.
"Ulbrig!" Elaina nearly snarled, "What was that for?!"
"Sometimes you just need a push!" he chuckled. "See warchief? You just have to trust your instincts. Can't train for everything."
Elaina suddenly lost altitude - catching herself and trying to focus again as she almost fell.
"Well, maybe some," he offered, looking at Arueshalae, then back. "Why don't I give you two lovebirds some time to figure it out? See you at the other end!"
Before either of them could retort, Ulbrig turned into his full griffon form and dove down the canyon.
Arueshalae held out a hand, beaming they were both flying. "Don't listen to him, you'll get it. If you do need training though, there's plenty of angels and archons in Drezen now."
"Maybe," Elaina admitted as she took it, "but maybe I think I'd prefer an azata."
Arueshalae blushed.

got tagged by @annunakitty in a thing! yippee tag game!
now the tag game was to introduce yourself with:
one tv show
one movie
one album
one video game
however, i'm doing two for each category! why? because i'm cute and special and get to change the rules, of course! and also because i'm really enthusiastic about sharing my favorite things with people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tv shows: adventure time & scavengers reign
not being able to pick between these two shows is the reason i'm doing two for each category. adventure time is my all-time favorite show hands down, but scavengers reign took second place (overtaking russian doll, which previously held that rank) when it absolutely blew me away earlier this year. i've watched it twice now and definitely plan on giving it a third watch sometime soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
movies: i saw the tv glow (2024) & suspiria (2018)
as someone who repressed my gender really hard throughout most of college after flirting with transitioning in high school, this movie really spoke to me. i've seen it twice now and found a lot of value in the rewatch. i definitely want to watch it again at least one more time. this is an incredibly profound movie that has changed me as a person.
on the other hand, suspiria (2018) is an enduring favorite of mine for a very silly reason. it is a straight up good movie, but the actual reason it's my second pick for this post is that for like a year after first watching it, i kept seeing the mangled bodies of characters from it as sleep paralysis hallucinations. it was terrifying at the time but i find it incredibly funny to look back on, and think very fondly of this film in general. i got to rewatch parts of it for free irl! thanks, sleep paralysis demons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
albums: feather river canyon blues by pigeon pit & kudzu, devour everything! by levees
for two years now, feather river canyon blues has very unambiguously been my favorite album of all time. it's lomes oleander's bold, dense, imagery-filled lyricism at its best, backed by the full band that her voice deserves playing alt-country sounds that strike the perfect balance between gentle and energetic. it's simultaneously desperate and hopeful, joyous and melancholy, and at every moment filled to the brim with emotion and beauty. this album feels like watching every sunset at once surrounded by your best friends and loved ones. transgender folk music will save us. if you have to pick one song from this album to listen to, make it milk crates:
kudzu, devour everything! is the reason i started playing banjo. levees is a friend of a friend, and i was introduced to their music because said friend was praising this album in our friend group's discord server. i find levees' idiosyncratic manner of clawhammer playing--often very fast and full of non-traditional rhythms--to be absolutely magical. their songwriting is also excellent, full of vivid stories and characters sung about in prose that weaves effortlessly between the elegantly straightforward and beautifully dense. i also recommend listening to their album vultures, as well as quarantipilation volumes 1 & 2. it's actually not one of the songs that contains banjo, but if you have to pick one to listen to from this album, i recommend her/hymn/their, which won't embed for some reason but hey here's the link
(also, honorable mention to drink the sea by the glitch mob, which is the first album i ever really fell in love with, and which inspired little 13-year-old elise to grab a copy of ableton and learn how to make music myself. until feather river canyon blues came along, i would have probably picked drink the sea for this post.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
video games: signalis & mice tea
first off, i cried at the end of signalis! while streaming! it was really, really good!!! it has a delightfully dreadful atmosphere, great story, very interesting worldbuilding, phenomenal art style, and excellent character design. plus, it was great for practicing my german. i strongly recommend signalis to anyone who likes survival horror.
second off, yes, i am choosing mice tea, a transformation fetish visual novel, as my second pick here. judge me all you like. i stand by my choice. its story is fun! the characters are excellent! its humor and conceptual ridiculousness disarm you and make way for genuinely emotionally impactful storylines! it has a lot of interesting commentary on gender! it almost single-handedly turned me into furry! also, it's hot! go play mice tea!
now, finally, it is time to tag! don't feel pressured to pick multiple things or provide explanations like i did! i just enjoy doing more than is assigned lmao. tagging @rotten-spaceymage, @birras0, @citrusuprising, @roboticvenusian, @femboty2k, and anyone who sees this and wants to do it themselves!
