Our Lady of Fatima is one of the most revered apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Catholic Church.
The Feast of Our Lady of Fatima marks the date she first appeared to three shepherd children in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal.
The messages delivered during these apparitions included a call to repentance, prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Feast Day: May 13
The Blessed Mother appeared on May 13, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal, to three little shepherds: Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
As they were praying the Holy Rosary, she appeared over a small oak tree, dressed in pure white, and said: 'Have no fear; I come from heaven, I want you children to come here on the thirteenth of each month, until October. Then, I will tell you who I am.'
In the course of the apparitions, the beautiful Lady requested to build a church in that place, to pray the rosary every day, and to add after each mystery the so-called 'Fatima Prayer', for the conversion of sinners.
After showing the fires of hell, she said: 'Did you see the hell, where the souls of the poor sinners are cast down? The Lord, in order to save them, wants to establish all over the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart.'
Then, the Lady revealed the three secrets.
The first was about the war; she said: 'This terrible war is about to finish; however. if men do not stop offending the Lord, there will start a more terrible one.'
The second, was about Russia and the spread of Communism.
The third secret was to be reserved for the Pope, and included a reference to an assassination attempt of the Holy Father, which, in fact, happened on May 13, 1981, John Paul II was shot at St. Peter's Square by Mehmet Ali Ağca, a Turkish assassin who was a member of the militant fascist group Grey Wolves.
On October 13th, the Lady appeared and said: 'I am the Lady of the Rosary, and I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. People must say the rosary.'
Francisco died on April 4, 1919 at the age of 10 in Aljustrel, while Jacinta followed him at the age of 9 on February 20, 1920 at Queen Stephanie's Hospital in Lisbon, and they were both beatified by John Paul II in 2000, and seventeen years later by Pope Francis on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first apparition.
Lucia, in the meantime, died on February 13, 2005 at the age of 97 in Coimbra, and was accorded the title Servant of God, as the first major step toward her canonization.

Sister Agnes, visionary of Our Lady of Akita, died on the feast of the Assumption
In Akita, Japan, Sister Agnes Sasagawa Katsuko, a nun and member of the Institute of the Servants of the Holy Eucharist, renowned for her visions of the Virgin Mary, died on August 15, 2024, at the age of 93, on the Solemnity of the Assumption.
Her story is marked by three Marian apparitions and messages delivered by the Blessed Virgin, recognized as authentic by Cardinal Ratzinger, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1988.
Agnes Sasagawa Katsuko was born into a Buddhist family in 1931. At the age of 19, a botched appendix operation left her paralyzed, leading to a series of twenty operations. It was through contact with a nurse that she discovered Catholicism and decided to be baptized. She took the name Agnes when she entered religious life. 
On June 12, 1973, Sister Agnes saw rays of light emanating from the tabernacle in her convent, a vision that recurred two days in a row. On June 28, a cross-shaped wound formed on her hand, bleeding profusely. Soon afterwards, messages from Our Lady of Akita began to reach her. On July 6, 1973, a voice coming from a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary asked her to “pray in reparation for the sins of men”. The voice also taught her a prayer of consecration to the heart of Jesus. On August 3, 1973, Mary delivered an “important” message to Sister Agnes, telling her: “Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls who console him, to appease the anger of the Heavenly Father.”
On October 13, 1973, on the 60th anniversary of the miracle of the Fatima sun, Our Lady warned: “If men do not repent and improve themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible chastisement on all mankind”, adding that the only weapons left to the survivors would be the Rosary and the Sign left by her Son.
From then on, a series of supernatural manifestations began, some of which were filmed by Japanese television: premonitory dreams, demonic attacks, various changes in appearance to the statue of the Blessed Virgin of Akita. The statue wept 101 times between January 4, 1975 and September 15, 1981.
In 1984, Bishop John Shojiro Ito recognized the supernatural nature of the events linked to the statue of Mary and authorized the veneration of Our Lady of Akita in his diocese. The Redemptoris Mater shrine in Akita, completed in 2002, attracts some 7,000 pilgrims each year.

According to the Gospels, Mary was a young woman living in Nazareth when she was visited by the angel Gabriel. This event, known as the Annunciation, marks a pivotal moment in Christian history, as it signifies the incarnation of God through Christ.
Mary is often depicted as a model of purity and grace, her life defined by her deep trust in God's will, even in moments of great trial, such as when she witnessed her son’s crucifixion. Her unwavering faith is highlighted in the Magnificat, a hymn of praise she sings during her visit to her cousin Elizabeth, where she glorifies God for the great things He has done (Luke 1:46-55).
In addition to her role as the mother of Jesus, Mary is honored as a spiritual mother to all believers. Her maternal care is symbolized through the various titles given to her, such as "Our Lady," "Queen of Heaven," and "Mother of Mercy." Throughout history, she has been an intercessor, someone believers turn to in prayer, asking for her help in approaching God.
Catholic and Orthodox Christians venerate Mary, believing in her special role in salvation history. They celebrate several feast days in her honor, such as the Immaculate Conception, which teaches that Mary was conceived without original sin, and the Assumption, the belief that she was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
Mary's appearances in various apparitions around the world, such as in Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe, have further deepened devotion to her, as she is seen bringing messages of peace, conversion, and hope.
In art, Mary is often depicted wearing blue, symbolizing her purity and role as Queen of Heaven. May 13 is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. 
She appeared six times to Lucia dos Santos (9) and her cousins Francisco Marto (8) and his sister Jacinta Marto (6) between 13 May 1917 and 13 October 1917.
The story of Fatima begins in 1916 when, against the backdrop of the First World War that had introduced Europe to the most horrific and powerful forms of warfare yet seen, and a year before the Communist revolution would plunge Russia and later Eastern Europe into six decades of oppression under militant atheistic governments, a resplendent figure appeared to the three children who were in the field tending the family sheep.
“I am the Angel of Peace,” said the figure, who appeared to them two more times that year, exhorting them to accept the sufferings that the Lord allowed them to undergo as an act of reparation for the sins that offend Him and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners.
Then, on the 13th day of the month of Our Lady, May 1917, an apparition of ‘a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun’ presented itself to the three children saying, “Please don’t be afraid of me. I’m not going to harm you.”
Lucia asked her where she came from and she responded,  “I come from Heaven.” 
The woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand.
The woman asked them to pray and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity, and to “say the Rosary every day to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.”
She also revealed that the children would suffer, especially from the unbelief of their friends and families, and that the two younger children, Francisco and Jacinta, would be taken to Heaven very soon.
However, Lucia would live longer in order to spread her message and devotion to the Immaculate Heart.
In the last apparition, the woman revealed her name in response to Lucia’s question:   “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”
That same day, 70,000 people had turned out to witness the apparition, following a promise by the woman that she would show the people that the apparitions were true.
They saw the sun make three circles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a manner, which left no doubt in their minds about the veracity of the apparitions. 
José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, declared the events worthy of belief on 13 October 1930. They have been approved by the Church as authentic.
The messages Our Lady imparted during the apparitions to the children concerned the violent trials that would afflict the world by means of war, starvation, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father in the twentieth century, if the world did not make reparation for sins.
She exhorted the Church to pray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peace may come upon the world and that the trials may be averted.
Our Lady of Fatima revealed three "prophetic secrets.”
The first two of which were revealed earlier and refer to the vision of hell and the souls languishing there, the request for an ardent devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finally, the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism. 
The third “secret” was not revealed until the year 2000.
It referred to the persecutions that humanity would undergo in the last century:
“The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated'”. 
The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been interpreted to include the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13, the 64th anniversary of the apparitions.
The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady:
“... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.”
What is the central meaning of the message of Fatima? Nothing different from what the Church has always taught:
It is, as Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVI,  has put it, “the exhortation to prayer as the path of “salvation for souls” and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.”
Perhaps the most well known utterance of the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was her confident decalaration that “My Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
Cardinal Ratzinger has interpreted this utterance as follows:
“The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind.
The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time.
The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God.
But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word.
From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: “In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).
The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise.

Our Lady of the Rosary is the title of the Blessed Virgin Mother.
The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7 every year in the Catholic Church to celebrate the anniversary of the victory that Christians got at the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece on October 7 1571 against the invading Ottoman Turks in Europe.
Pope Pius V was having a problem with the Turkish Ottoman Empire, an Islamic empire centered in Istanbul, which was expanding rapidly in the Christian regions of Europe.
The Turkish empire might have permitted the expansion of Islam deep into Europe.
Pope Pius V organized an alliance called the Holy League who set sail, with around 200 ships, in the Mediterranean to fight a very powerful Ottoman navy that had nearly 300 warships.
The Pope knew the military might of the Ottoman Turks, he, therefore, encouraged the Christians throughout Europe to gather in their churches and pray the Holy Rosary to invoke the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary against the powerful Ottoman navy.
On October 7 1571, the Christian fleets battled the Ottoman fleets at the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece and managed to capture and sink all but 13 of the Turkish ships.
The Christians won the battle which was attributed to the help of Mary Mother of God through praying of the rosary.
Pope Pius V dedicated October 7 as a thanksgiving day to Our Lady of Victory.
The name of the feast was later changed to Our Lady of the Rosary by Pope Gregory XIII.
This feast of Our Lady of the Rosary emphasizes the intercessory power of Mary.
It reminds us that when we Christians are in danger, they can pray to our Mother Mary for help.

According to the Dominicans, in 1206, St. Dominic had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary who gave him the rosary to use as a tool to fight the heretics.
The Rosary has its roots in the 150 psalms where people who couldn’t read began praying 150 Hail Marys instead.
In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to have 5 joyful, 5 sorrowful, and 5 glorious mysteries.
The 5 Mysteries of Light were added to the Rosary in 2002, by Pope John Paul II.

After the victory of the Battle of Lepanto, Pope Pius V instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory in 1571.
The name of the feast was changed to Feast of the Holy Rosary by Pope Gregory XIII, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of October.
In 1671, Pope Clement X extended the feast to the whole of Spain, and on August 5 1716, Pope Clement XI extended the feast to be celebrated by the Universal Church.
In 1913, Pope Pius X changed the feast day to October 7.
During the 1969 liturgical reforms, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is listed as a mandatory memorial.

Our Lady of Fatima: Formally known as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima, is a Catholic (Marian) title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria in Fátima, Portugal. The three children were Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, declared the events worthy of belief on October 13, 1930. Pope Pius XII granted a pontifical decree of canonical coronation via the papal bull Celeberrima solemnia towards the venerated image on April 25, 1946. Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella, the designated papal legate, carried out the coronation on May 13, 1946, now permanently enshrined at the Chapel of the Apparitions of Fátima.
August 7 - Iroha Inukai (Cure Friendy)
St. Cajetan: Italian priest and religious reformer who is known as the co-founder of the Congregation of Clerics Regular of the Divine Providence aka the Theatine order. The order grew at a fairly slow pace: there were only twelve Theatines during the sack of Rome in 1527, during which Cajetan was tortured by the Spanish soldiers of Charles V who had mutinied. Canonized as a saint by Pope Clement X in 1671, he is the patron of the unemployed, bankers, workers, gamblers, jobseekers, document controllers and gamers.
December 21 - Yuki Nekoyashiki (Cure Nyammy)
St. Peter Canisius: Dutch Jesuit priest who, known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, and Switzerland. Through his preaching and writings, he became one of the most influential Catholics of his time. Canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and declared Doctor of the Church the same year, he is the patron of Catholic press and his major shrine can be found in Fribourg, Switzerland.
November 5 - Mayu Nekoyashiki (Cure Lillian)
St. Elizabeth: She was the mother of St. John the Baptist, the wife of Zechariah and a relative of Mary, mother of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Luke and in Islamic tradition. She was past normal child-bearing age when she conceived and gave birth to John. She is also present in art when she is greeted by Mary, and is known for the Visitation, which can be found as a Second Joyful Mystery in the Holy Rosary.
September 7 - Satoru Toyama
St. Marko Stjepan Krizin (Marko Križevčanin): Croatian missionary, theology professor and Catholic priest who was active in the 17th century. He was executed in 1619 in the course of the struggle between Catholicism and Calvinism in the region. Beatified by Pope St. Pius X in 1905, and canonized by Pope St. John Paul II at Košice, Slovakia in 1995, Marko’s relics can be found at the Esztergom Basilica in Esztergom, Hungary.
March 27 - Daifuku (Daifuku Toyama)
St. Rupert of Salzburg: 8th century Austrian bishop who is the first Bishop of Salzburg and abbot of St. Peter’s in Salzburg, and was the contemporary of King Childebert III. By the end of the 7th century, the Agilolfing duke Theodo of Bavaria requested that he come to his residence at Regensburg (Ratisbon) to help spread the Christian faith among the Bavarian tribes. In Christian art, he depicted with a barrel of salt in his hand, thus he is the patron saint of salt miners.
