THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Feast Day: May 13
The Blessed Mother appeared on May 13, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal, to three little shepherds: Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
As they were praying the Holy Rosary, she appeared over a small oak tree, dressed in pure white, and said: 'Have no fear; I come from heaven, I want you children to come here on the thirteenth of each month, until October. Then, I will tell you who I am.'
In the course of the apparitions, the beautiful Lady requested to build a church in that place, to pray the rosary every day, and to add after each mystery the so-called 'Fatima Prayer', for the conversion of sinners.
After showing the fires of hell, she said: 'Did you see the hell, where the souls of the poor sinners are cast down? The Lord, in order to save them, wants to establish all over the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart.'
Then, the Lady revealed the three secrets.
The first was about the war; she said: 'This terrible war is about to finish; however. if men do not stop offending the Lord, there will start a more terrible one.'
The second, was about Russia and the spread of Communism.
The third secret was to be reserved for the Pope, and included a reference to an assassination attempt of the Holy Father, which, in fact, happened on May 13, 1981, John Paul II was shot at St. Peter's Square by Mehmet Ali Ağca, a Turkish assassin who was a member of the militant fascist group Grey Wolves.
On October 13th, the Lady appeared and said: 'I am the Lady of the Rosary, and I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. People must say the rosary.'
Francisco died on April 4, 1919 at the age of 10 in Aljustrel, while Jacinta followed him at the age of 9 on February 20, 1920 at Queen Stephanie's Hospital in Lisbon, and they were both beatified by John Paul II in 2000, and seventeen years later by Pope Francis on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first apparition.
Lucia, in the meantime, died on February 13, 2005 at the age of 97 in Coimbra, and was accorded the title Servant of God, as the first major step toward her canonization.

She appeared six times and identified Herself as “Our Lady of the Rosary”, asking that they pray the rosary daily for the conversion of sinners. Mary also spoke of observing first Saturdays, devotion to her Immaculate Heart and the conversion of Russia. During the final apparition, the dance of the sun took place in front of 70,000 people.

What's my thing with the saints
Or "Why a hard polytheist will include saints in their cult?"
(very long post, I don't know how cut it on mobile)
To understand what saints are doing in my spiritual life, we need some context about Brazilian history.
Brazil is home of several religions that are based on the religions of the enslaved Africans. Candomblé and Umbanda are the most notorious, but this is a very spiritual country, and many others exist for almost so long as Candomblé.
But we are also a country that had eugenics as a state policy even after WWII. And we had one of the biggest nazi party outside Germany before it. And in the colony time, and again during the begging of the XX century, there was an effort to "whitening the population", which means forced mixing races, and destruction of African and Native culture.
The African based religions was considered ilegal until the 1970's, and even today, police will illegally act against the Terreiros, the sacred grounds of these religions. Neo pentecostal groups are know for attacks, burning down, breaking the sacred objects and statues, hurting the caretakers of the place. Babalorixas and Yalorixas had been even murdered.
So, the syncretism was, until not that much time ago, a survival tool for these religions.

And here, as in most of Latin America, is very hard to say if someone is praying for a Catholic Saint, a folk Saint never recognised by the church, or a Saint, meaning you are praying for a orixá, a spirit guide, a god, or a deified ancestor.
And most of the time, it's a mixture of any of this.
The African religions community is know as the Povo de Santo, the People of the Saints.
Even if I'm not an initiate, because I already had other spiritual compromises, I'm a proud son of Ogum. I do what a non initiated can do to honor him, what includes... Going to feasts of Saint George, celebrating Ogum in April 23, Saint George day. (also candles, baths and offerings at railroads when adequate). I have a lot of icons of Saint George, and I pray to Saint George, but I'm really praying to my father Ogum.
I was catholic until 14. Not only raised catholic, I actively wanted to be a priest. My first altar, at 6, was for Hermes and Our Lady of Fatima. I developed relations with many Saints. It was the end of the 80's, beggining of the 90's, and I was constantly sad that the old gods was not been worshipped - and in the moment I figured that they are still worshipped, I migrated to the polytheism.
But what to do with my saints? I had a particular situation with Saint Michael, when I received a grace about my health.
And them I saw someone who worshipped Apolo using Saint Michael as syncretism.
I'm an art history nerd. I can talk about the symbols and iconography of lots of religions with the same passion. I'm constantly studying sacred iconography, no matter of what faith.
And been a nerd, I knew a lot of how early Christians syncretism with Greek and Roman gods happened, and I did the opposite way. Jesus the good shepperd is Hermes. Most symbols for Christ are dionisian imagery.
And what are the ancient demi-gods if not other type of Saint?
I looked at the Saints, and saw the gods and spirits of this land, of Latin America, I saw Gods and Orixás, I saw the Honored Dead. I see icons to guide me.
In my personal spiritual path, the cult of the Saints, as it happens in Latin America, is part of the Ancestors cult. The saints are housed in the altar for the home and land spirits, the Ancestors and Lare, the spiritual guides.
When I celebrated Saint Martin day I celebrated the spirits related to wine and marginalized people. I celebrated the force that is enthroned in hundreds of little stores in Mexico, and the pre-colombian spirits that come to feast in Central America. The hands that guide South American people to prosperity and solidarity. I celebrated the dead and the other folk that come to Magusto to eat and drink with the living. I celebrated the Old Halloween. And in a sense, I celebrated Exu/ Ellegwa, because of the cuban Santería syncretism.
And I celebrated San Martín Caballero, the patron Saint that gave me my name, in ways that catholics don't really appreciate, but been connected with the Saint's People, is very natural for me.
So, when I talk about saints, all this is carried by the word.

SAINT OF THE DAY (May 13)
May 13 is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917.
She appeared six times to Lucia dos Santos (9) and her cousins Francisco Marto (8) and his sister Jacinta Marto (6) between 13 May 1917 and 13 October 1917.
The story of Fatima begins in 1916 when, against the backdrop of the First World War that had introduced Europe to the most horrific and powerful forms of warfare yet seen, and a year before the Communist revolution would plunge Russia and later Eastern Europe into six decades of oppression under militant atheistic governments, a resplendent figure appeared to the three children who were in the field tending the family sheep.
“I am the Angel of Peace,” said the figure, who appeared to them two more times that year, exhorting them to accept the sufferings that the Lord allowed them to undergo as an act of reparation for the sins that offend Him and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners.
Then, on the 13th day of the month of Our Lady, May 1917, an apparition of ‘a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun’ presented itself to the three children saying, “Please don’t be afraid of me. I’m not going to harm you.”
Lucia asked her where she came from and she responded, “I come from Heaven.”
The woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand.
The woman asked them to pray and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity, and to “say the Rosary every day to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.”
She also revealed that the children would suffer, especially from the unbelief of their friends and families, and that the two younger children, Francisco and Jacinta, would be taken to Heaven very soon.
However, Lucia would live longer in order to spread her message and devotion to the Immaculate Heart.
In the last apparition, the woman revealed her name in response to Lucia’s question: “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”
That same day, 70,000 people had turned out to witness the apparition, following a promise by the woman that she would show the people that the apparitions were true.
They saw the sun make three circles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a manner, which left no doubt in their minds about the veracity of the apparitions.
José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, declared the events worthy of belief on 13 October 1930. They have been approved by the Church as authentic.
The messages Our Lady imparted during the apparitions to the children concerned the violent trials that would afflict the world by means of war, starvation, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father in the twentieth century, if the world did not make reparation for sins.
She exhorted the Church to pray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peace may come upon the world and that the trials may be averted.
Our Lady of Fatima revealed three "prophetic secrets.”
The first two of which were revealed earlier and refer to the vision of hell and the souls languishing there, the request for an ardent devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finally, the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism.
The third “secret” was not revealed until the year 2000.
It referred to the persecutions that humanity would undergo in the last century:
“The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated'”.
The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been interpreted to include the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13, the 64th anniversary of the apparitions.
The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady:
“... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.”
What is the central meaning of the message of Fatima? Nothing different from what the Church has always taught:
It is, as Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVI, has put it, “the exhortation to prayer as the path of “salvation for souls” and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.”
Perhaps the most well known utterance of the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was her confident decalaration that “My Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
Cardinal Ratzinger has interpreted this utterance as follows:
“The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind.
The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time.
The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God.
But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word.
From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: “In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).
The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise.

Sister Agnes, visionary of Our Lady of Akita, died on the feast of the Assumption
In Akita, Japan, Sister Agnes Sasagawa Katsuko, a nun and member of the Institute of the Servants of the Holy Eucharist, renowned for her visions of the Virgin Mary, died on August 15, 2024, at the age of 93, on the Solemnity of the Assumption.
Her story is marked by three Marian apparitions and messages delivered by the Blessed Virgin, recognized as authentic by Cardinal Ratzinger, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1988.
Agnes Sasagawa Katsuko was born into a Buddhist family in 1931. At the age of 19, a botched appendix operation left her paralyzed, leading to a series of twenty operations. It was through contact with a nurse that she discovered Catholicism and decided to be baptized. She took the name Agnes when she entered religious life.
On June 12, 1973, Sister Agnes saw rays of light emanating from the tabernacle in her convent, a vision that recurred two days in a row. On June 28, a cross-shaped wound formed on her hand, bleeding profusely. Soon afterwards, messages from Our Lady of Akita began to reach her. On July 6, 1973, a voice coming from a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary asked her to “pray in reparation for the sins of men”. The voice also taught her a prayer of consecration to the heart of Jesus. On August 3, 1973, Mary delivered an “important” message to Sister Agnes, telling her: “Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls who console him, to appease the anger of the Heavenly Father.”
On October 13, 1973, on the 60th anniversary of the miracle of the Fatima sun, Our Lady warned: “If men do not repent and improve themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible chastisement on all mankind”, adding that the only weapons left to the survivors would be the Rosary and the Sign left by her Son.
From then on, a series of supernatural manifestations began, some of which were filmed by Japanese television: premonitory dreams, demonic attacks, various changes in appearance to the statue of the Blessed Virgin of Akita. The statue wept 101 times between January 4, 1975 and September 15, 1981.
In 1984, Bishop John Shojiro Ito recognized the supernatural nature of the events linked to the statue of Mary and authorized the veneration of Our Lady of Akita in his diocese. The Redemptoris Mater shrine in Akita, completed in 2002, attracts some 7,000 pilgrims each year.

Catholic and Orthodox Christians venerate Mary, believing in her special role in salvation history. They celebrate several feast days in her honor, such as the Immaculate Conception, which teaches that Mary was conceived without original sin, and the Assumption, the belief that she was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
Mary's appearances in various apparitions around the world, such as in Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe, have further deepened devotion to her, as she is seen bringing messages of peace, conversion, and hope.

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY Feast Day: Saturday following the Feast of the Sacred Heart
"If you put all the love of all the mothers into one heart, it still would not equal the love of the heart of Mary for her children." -St. Louis de Montfort
This feast is celebrated on the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, on March 25, 2022 – the Solemnity of the Annunciation – Pope Francis consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in union with Catholic bishops and Catholics from all over the world to implore an end to the war. This act of consecration was pronounced by the Pope Francis on the afternoon of Friday in St. Peter's Basilica, at the Vatican City, and, on the same day, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner, performed the same act of consecration at Fátima, Portugal, as the envoy of the Pope.
The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, symbol of her love for Jesus and all mankind, beautifully expresses our affection for our heavenly mother. Her heart that was never touched by the stain of sin, experienced the joy of divine motherhood, the pains of the Passion of Jesus, and the ecstasy of his resurrection. The Heart of Mary is mentioned twice in the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
First at the presentation of Jesus in the temple, when old Simeon said to Mary: 'A sword will pierce your Heart…'
Then, after the finding of Jesus in the Temple, Mary could not understand what Jesus said to them: 'but she kept all these things in her heart.'
The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was fostered by St. John Eudes in the 17th century, was officially approved by Pope Pius VII in 1805, and the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917, had a very strong influence in popularizing the devotion.
On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII consecrated the whole world to the Immaculate Heart. In 1944, to commemorate this special consecration, Pope Pius XII extended the solemn feast to the Universal Church.

Our Lady of the Rosary is the title of the Blessed Virgin Mother.
The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7 every year in the Catholic Church to celebrate the anniversary of the victory that Christians got at the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece on October 7 1571 against the invading Ottoman Turks in Europe.
Pope Pius V was having a problem with the Turkish Ottoman Empire, an Islamic empire centered in Istanbul, which was expanding rapidly in the Christian regions of Europe.
The Turkish empire might have permitted the expansion of Islam deep into Europe.
Pope Pius V organized an alliance called the Holy League who set sail, with around 200 ships, in the Mediterranean to fight a very powerful Ottoman navy that had nearly 300 warships.
The Pope knew the military might of the Ottoman Turks, he, therefore, encouraged the Christians throughout Europe to gather in their churches and pray the Holy Rosary to invoke the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary against the powerful Ottoman navy.
On October 7 1571, the Christian fleets battled the Ottoman fleets at the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece and managed to capture and sink all but 13 of the Turkish ships.
The Christians won the battle which was attributed to the help of Mary Mother of God through praying of the rosary.
Pope Pius V dedicated October 7 as a thanksgiving day to Our Lady of Victory.
The name of the feast was later changed to Our Lady of the Rosary by Pope Gregory XIII.
This feast of Our Lady of the Rosary emphasizes the intercessory power of Mary.
It reminds us that when we Christians are in danger, they can pray to our Mother Mary for help.

According to the Dominicans, in 1206, St. Dominic had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary who gave him the rosary to use as a tool to fight the heretics.
The Rosary has its roots in the 150 psalms where people who couldn’t read began praying 150 Hail Marys instead.
In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to have 5 joyful, 5 sorrowful, and 5 glorious mysteries.
The 5 Mysteries of Light were added to the Rosary in 2002, by Pope John Paul II.

After the victory of the Battle of Lepanto, Pope Pius V instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory in 1571.
The name of the feast was changed to Feast of the Holy Rosary by Pope Gregory XIII, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of October.
In 1671, Pope Clement X extended the feast to the whole of Spain, and on August 5 1716, Pope Clement XI extended the feast to be celebrated by the Universal Church.
In 1913, Pope Pius X changed the feast day to October 7.
During the 1969 liturgical reforms, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is listed as a mandatory memorial.
