In the end, politics was an accretion of personal decisions, and that means that the personality of the protagonists cannot be left out of the discussion. It determined not only how they reacted to the situations in which they found themselves, but how others reacted to them. The growing support for Edward IV in 1461 must have owed something to the realisation that he would make an effective king - whereas his father never seems to have been regarded in that light.
--Rosemary Horrox, "Personalities and Politics", The Wars of the Roses (Problems in Focus), edited by A.J Pollard
...When the worst had happened, and civil war was a reality, the overwhelming imperative was to find some way of restoring order. At the level of high politics, what this entailed in practice was a rallying around the de facto king. The Wars of the Roses, far from weakening the monarchy, actually strengthened it, since the king was the only man able to surmount faction. In spite of [Henry VI’s] manifest failings, Richard, duke of York's criticism of the regime commanded little high-level support - and would have commanded even less but for the crown's alienation of the junior branch of the Nevilles, headed by York's brother-in-law the earl of Salisbury. York in fact never did attain the political viability to break the vicious circle of temporary ascendancy and political exclusion. It was his son, Edward, earl of March, who finally mustered enough support to take the throne. He was able to do so in part because the situation had been transformed by the country's descent into open war, which reduced the compulsion to uphold the king as the embodiment of stability. Once it was no longer a matter of averting war, but of stopping it, political opinion began to divide more evenly between Henry VI and his rival. However, the crucial change may well have been York's own death at the Battle of Wakefield late in 1460. In the ensuing months Edward of York was able to present himself as the man who could mend the shattered political community. That self-identification with unity proved immensely potent, and it was not a role which could plausibly have been filled by his father. In the eyes of contemporaries, York had been the begetter of faction: a man tainted by his willingness to go to extremes.
#oof💀#I can't decide if this is more awkward or ironic#But it's nevertheless VERY interesting#Edward IV#Richard Duke of York#my post#wars of the roses#Edward still had to win Towton (ie: a military victory) to actually secure his kingship and bring over a lot of the nobility to his side#But this point is nonetheless very true - not just for his road to victory but also for the image he cultivated after he had won#It's very common to hear about how Edward IV was eventually viewed by many as a 'better' alternate to the throne than Henry VI#But what isn't acknowledged nearly as much is how by that logic he would've equally been viewed as a better alternate than his father#Ironically this entire point is made even clearer by the actions of York's own staunchest supporters ie the Nevilles#Certainly both Edward & Warwick learned their lesson from York's disastrous attempt at an acclamation in 1460#Considering how comparatively well-planned and well-executed Edward's own acclamation was in comparison#This is another reason I dislike how the Yorkists are often viewed and spoken of as a collective. the broader dynastic label tends to#minimize the differences in certain situations like this one or Richard's usurpation

Pet peeves: category: TV detectives.
OK OK what rEALLY cheeses me off is when a TV detective carries around a backpack all the time and never fucking takes anything out of it or puts anything in it.
When it's just a fucking prop, like, for what reason?
My backpack has a brush, moisturizer, pen, notepad, measuring tape, penknife, leash (for when I come across a stray dog), bus pass, keys, wallet, sunglasses (on sunny days), phone, band-aids, aspirin, binoculars, compass, breath mints, fruit bars, a book.
And believe it or not all of those things have come in handy at one time or another.
And it can expand to hold a goddamn baby elephant.
So what's the point of a detective who never puts anything in his backpack and never takes anything out? He just lugs it around, to show, what? How proletariat he is? Pockets aren't enough for this sleuth, he needs a Hershel pack for all the shit he doesn't have.
Columbo kept all kinds of stuff in his raincoat. Cigars, matches, hard-boiled eggs, salt shaker, gumdrops, dog treats, once an entire fucking Thermos. Miss Marple had lots of handy things in her purse, from hankies to knitting. Father Brown had a purple stole and lock picks in his cassock. Maigret had a tobacco pouch, matches, and pipe in his coat.
But Backpack Detectives don't have so much as a sandwich in a paper bag.
It just irks me. Couldn't the writers come up with something the characters actually used?
(I admit I haven't seen all episodes of Unforgotten and Death in Paradise, so it's possible they used their backpacks and I didn't see it, but in all the episodes I have seen they've never zipped open those suckers even once.)
The other thing that irks me is that Backpack Detectives always carry their pack only over one shoulder.
If you're kneeling down to examine the body or footprints or blood smears, or bending over to squint at the shattered vase or bullet in the coffee table, that pack will slip right off your shoulder. So you have to hold it in place with your other hand. Which means you only have one free hand.
If you do the sensible thing, the thing backpacks are designed for, you have both your arms through the straps, which leaves you with both hands free.
A detective wants both hands free. What if the murdered person's spouse offers a cup of tea while Backpack Detective is picking shards of bone out of the carpet? He doesn't have a free hand.
Screenwriters need to think about this shit more.

side eyeing the person who said there are parallels between regulus black and tom riddle. and I just don’t see it?
regulus is the favorite younger son of an old-money wizarding family. who easily and enthusiastically subscribed to the family beliefs in wizard-nazism until having a moment of conscious based on his connection with the family house elf.
tom riddle (while his mother comes from a noble, old house) isn’t raised in that world. he grows up poor in a muggle orphanage with no familial love/support. not to mention his family had by that time lost all their money/respectability. riddle is also not as easily led and based on context clues, much more charming and intelligent (sorry regulus fans). unlike regulus though, he displays 1. no conscious and 2. no genuine connection to anyone. regulus is able to do a brave and selfless act because of his love for kreacher. and most importantly, regulus is able to do the one thing riddle is scared of most: die. regulus willingly sacrifices himself to try to destroy the locket.
I think it’s more interesting that regulus has no parallel’s to riddle, yet he was the only person aside from dumbledore that was able to figure out that riddle was using horcruxes (slughorn doesn’t count because riddle all but told him).
anyway, riddle’s parallels are to harry, dumbledore, and snape. to me those four and their connection are kinda the heart of the story.
#riddle and harry’s similarities are so fascinating to me#like harry (before knowing he was voldemort) seeing himself in riddle asking if he could stay at hogwarts over the summer#riddle choosing harry over neville because lily was a muggleborn and thus reminding him of his father#the scene where harry finally gets the memory from slughorn being so similar to tom’s scene asking slughorn for info about horcruxes#harry potter#sorry regulus girlies i hope you don’t find this bc you guys scare me

Henry [VII] spared Richard's nephew and designated heir, John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln, and made the Yorkist heiress [from 1499] Margaret Plantagenet Countess of Salisbury suo jure.
unless i'm very much mistaken... wrong henry
#🗡️#afaik salisbury wasn't returned until 1512#by *henry viii*#because uh#margaret wasn't heiress to shit as long as her brother(/cousin) lived#a concept that maybe familiar to you if you have heard of elizabeth of york#edward was the heir to both salisbury and warwick (but the lands were controlled by henry vii during his minority/imprisonment)#and warwick returned to the crown after his attainder or else it wouldn't have been an available title for john dudley in 1547#it was only salisbury that margaret was granted#i think elizabeth of york actually was made duchess of york right at the start of henry vii's reign?#but that has fuck all to do with margaret#look i understand it's hard to keep track of all these attainders being thrown around#but the concept of male-preference primogeniture... should not be that complicated...#and at any rate (as the english nobles were damn well aware) attainders had no impact on edward's right to the throne#or for that matter warwick or salisbury - since neither were inherited from his father; ergo edward only lost warwick/salisbury#because HE was attainted and executed; so margaret being returned salisbury#again really had nothing to do with george of clarence or for that matter henry vii#edward's inheritance was prompted by the deaths of a) anne neville b) edward of middleham and c) being given that title by his uncle

Harry and Lily's motivations and thought patterns can be said to be similar, though, even with how cruelly they were separated.
Harry did not have the chance to be raised by Lily, true. Personality is not solely shaped by genetics: also true. But Harry still shares Lily's stubbornness, cutting tongue, and her strong sense of justice. He shares her belief in the value of sacrifice, even when that sacrifice is personal, final, and has no guarantee of leading to the most ideal outcome. Like both Lily and James, like Sirius and Remus, Harry has no fear of sacrificing himself for friends and family—no fear of dying for what he believes in. He believes in doing things for the benefit of the many, even at his own expense.
This isn't because he's been "groomed" to be that way. It is an innate part of his character from the moment we first meet him in chapter 2 of book 1. It is a part of his character that is clear to characters like Albus, Sirius, Remus, and Severus without Harry ever having to express it in words. It's not an aspect of his character many people like that much, much less accept, but it is a distinct tie between Lily's character and Harry's.
The wizarding world has only a vague idea of who Harry is, and Harry is only infrequently bothered by their opinions of him. His strongest rejection of any role they might put him in is during year 5, when the general public's denial of Voldemort's return is literally threatening his life. But the Ministry and the general public don't have the slightest idea of who Harry is and what he's motivated by—ironically, very similar to many members of Harry's own fandom.
As for Lily's home life, we know that her parents adored her and she had a strong friendship with Severus. But we also know that all was not rosy (no pun intended) in her early life before she grew up and joined the fight against Voldemort. She and Petunia had a rocky relationship which only worsened the more Lily leaned into her identity as a witch. Her first best friend splintered off at some early point during their school years, splitting his time between her and a group of people who thought she was sub-human and a thief of magic. Of the other close friends she may have had, none seem to have outlived her, and she spent at least some of her last days on earth getting news of their deaths.
Lily does not get the screen time she deserves, and much of her behavior is left only to our speculation as fans. But Lily's words and choices in light of the few things we do know about her speak to a deep strength of character, an inflexible sense of right and wrong. Lily Potter is an altruistic woman who is able to empathize with others even without suffering a quarter of the harm that her son comes to experience once she is gone.
Harry was most certainly abused: neglected, treated as less than his cousin, left alone to handle problems no child should have to handle. But I'd argue that these things did not take away his sense of identity, or prevent him from having one; and that it's a common fanon misconception that Harry is either a beaten-down butterfly or a blank-slate everyman.
One of the thing many fans miss about Harry (despite how much his mistreatment is discussed) is that even with the way the Dursleys treat him, Harry does not bend or break before them. A different child might have been submissive, shy, obedient. They might have taken on some of the same ugly beliefs as their 'caretakers'. At eleven years old, Harry is and does none of those things. He is defiant. He is snarky. He is strong-willed, and extremely opinionated, and loyal—though he doesn't fall in line behind the first person with power or wealth or even a winning smile. As he matures throughout the series, these core traits mature with him.
The Harry who sends his friends away for help and decides to face Voldemort at eleven, knowing he will likely die, is the same Harry who goes in secret to face Voldemort at seventeen, knowing he will most certainly die. And he shares this choice, and the belief system it's based on, with the woman who threw herself in front of her killer, her son's would-be killer, and said please not Harry. Have mercy.
Harry Potter wasn't raised to be a soldier or a self-sacrificial lamb. Harry experienced criminal neglect in his early years and realized that no one was going to swoop in and save him when he needed help. He took that to mean that if he wanted something done, if he wanted to help others, he needed to do it himself. By the time he met with adults who did want to help him, and could have helped him, their hands were tied by murderous half-dead men and bureaucratic conservatist systems and discrimination and their own misconceptions of him and a million other things—and that cemented the part of Harry's personality that insisted he must handle things by himself.
And that, acting where others don't or won't, is a choice he makes on his own throughout the series. Harry has plenty of chances to run away from his issues, and a host of people who might have been glad to let him do it. But he doesn't, because he never wants to be a bystander. He never wants to be the type of person who turns his back on the suffering of others—like Wormtail, like the Death Eaters, like the Ministry of Magic. It is a trait he shares with his mother, who could have just as easily packed up and moved clear across the world when Voldemort started terrorizing Britain—but didn't.
Whether they are loved or hated by others, villainized or lionized, both Harry and Lily choose to make personal sacrifices to fight for what's right.
All this to say—I agree with the OP. Harry Potter is not James Potter and he is not Lily Evans Potter either. But I also believe Harry does have some of his parents' less obvious traits, traits which shine through in some of his most perilous moments and give him the strength to overcome his opponents. Still, Harry should NOT be written or interpreted as a carbon copy of either of his parents, because it was Harry James Potter alone who had the personality, the strength, the wisdom, and the selflessness necessary to destroy Voldemort.
Harry Potter is an extremely complex character who deserves actual deep analysis of his choices and character that aren't tied to what his parents said or did or how fans feel about his sacrificial tendencies.
harry potter is NOT james potter.
I love parallels. I love people reminding others of those they've lost along the way.
But Harry Potter is not James . And that is so vital to his entire character.
When people see Harry, they see James. They see a James who sees the world through Lily's eyes. When they see Harry, they don't see Harry.
And that is so vital to his entire being. It's vital to how people see Harry. The people that didn't know James, see the Boy-Who-Lived.
The people who did, who were close to Harry, to James, to Lily. They see James and Lily Potter. They see the people who died, people they were close to, people they miss every day but will never see again.
Remus, Sirius, Snape, McGonagall.
At first, they see James and Lily. And then when they meet him - apart from Snape- they quickly realise he is anything but.
Harry is not arrogant, rich, spoilt. He doesn't have an ego, he doesn't play pranks, he isn't a chaser, he doesn't pick fights.
Harry isn't exceptionally bright at everything he does, he isn't inconceivably forgiving for those who don't deserve it.
He is not Lily and James.
When peole write Harry as a golden retriever, as effortlessly good at everything, they aren't writing about Harry.
Harry who grew up not wanted. Harry who grew up believing something was wrong with him. Harry who was forced into the wizarding world with no knowledge. Harry who is as stubborn as a mule,. Harry who is loyal to a fault, who forgives those he loves, Harry who isn't his parents.
He has traits of them, their anger, their ability to love, and much much more.
BUT Harry Potter isn't them. He isn't the 'best of them both' he isn't James or Lily or Sirius or Regulus.
Harry Potter is Harry. Just Harry.
And that is why he doesn't get along ith Snape. That's why McGonagall believes Harry dragged Neville out for a joke in first year.
When people see Harry, they don't see Harry. And by writing Harry as somebody else, or as 'so-and-so's child' you're not doing the character justice.
'I want a complex character with complex relationships'
'i want an angry character'
'i want to read a book that makes me think'
you couldn't even handle Harry Potter.
#Harry Potter#Lily Evans#harry and lily#potter meta#evans meta#mikailakay#hope you don't mind me offering some counterpoints#this isn't in a rude way I just want to offer a different perspective since my opinion's more in line with the OP#not fireandgold#Harry has some qualities that he shares with his parents. BUT. until the fandom stops treating him AS his parents#OR as some other marauder-era character reborn I think we have to keep making meta posts like this#and no offense but I truly believe that downplaying or minimizing Harry's CHOICE to sacrifice himself (multiple times not just in DH)#is a disservice to his character and leads to missing clear themes of sacrifice and shielding/protection throughout the series#this is such a hard line to walk! if I had my way people wouldn't mention Harry's parents much when writing about him#unless they were sharing old stories with him or reminiscing about qualities Lily and James ACTUALLY share with Harry.#but that nuance is mostly missing in fanfics which means you get people believing one thing or an opposite thing#you also have things like That Woman reusing ideas from the original series in FB and other HP media which waters down the original intent#like Albus teaching Defense. it's not supported by canon and doesn't make sense and it takes away from Remus teaching Defense in year 3#and it means that when you have REAL parallels like Lily standing up for Snape and Harry standing up for Neville they get lost in the noise#Harry and Lily both defend unpopular people and stand up to bullies and that's miraculous when you consider Harry's upbringing#Harry got one year with his parents. Whatever That Woman says to the contrary matters not. That's basically nothing.#Nurture should have screwed Harry over but instead he had such a strong sense of self that he mirrored his mother's choices 17 years later#without ever knowing much about her or his father. that's amazing! it shouldn't be reduced to ''another smart jock who loves redheads yay!'

Is it true that RichardIII and Anne Neville are friends from childhood before marriage?
Hi! I'm not as familiar with this phase in Richard's life, but to quote David Horspool from his book Richard III: A Ruler and his Reputation:
"Some people who were also under Warwick’s roofs at this time would become Richard’s loyal friends and companions, even to their deaths. It may be tempting to suggest that Richard’s future wife, Anne Neville, Warwick’s younger daughter, would have been among them. Certainly Edward IV’s own example gives the lie to the idea that all high-level medieval marriages were matters of diplomacy and political calculation. But Anne was four years younger than Richard, and it is perfectly possible that they lived at different Warwick houses – and boys and girls were, in any case, educated separately. So while Richard’s future bride would not have been unknown to him, it is fantasy to conclude that ‘in childhood they had known each other well'."
I should also point out that their personal dynamic, whatever it was, wouldn't have really been a factor in Richard and Anne's marriage to each other. Theirs was a transactional marriage similar to most aristocratic unions at that time, made (primarily) for Richard's political and financial benefit and (secondarily) for Anne's security and inheritance. What they personally thought about each other would have been irrelevant when making the match.
Hope this helps!
#ask#richard iii#anne neville#speaking of Richard in the 1460s#I'm not sure where the idea of Warwick being some kind of father-figure to him comes from?#There is no evidence for any kind of a dynamic or personal closeness between them#It's possible in the sense that anything is theoretically possible but it's not supported on anything or based off anything#It's pure speculation#And while it could be interesting from a fictional perspective i#It absolutely cannot be applied when studying them from a *historical* perspective#(though truthfully even from a fictional angle I'm not sure why anyone would choose this when a VERY tragic and compelling dynamic#of the sort already historically exists between Warwick and Edward IV across the 1460s.#it personally doesn't make sense to me)

Hello love<33 i saw ur requests were open if it hasn't been done before can i request a Potter! Reader x Slytherin boys like the reader is Harry's twin sister?
Absolutely inlove with your writing btw🫶🫶
Potter!Reader || Slytherin Boys
type :: fluff
tw/cw :: abuse mention (tom, mattheo)
contains :: draco, tom, mattheo, theodore, lorenzo
notes :: i love this idea so much, i didn't think it would be this fun to write for - also i know neville technically killed voldemort BUT, just go along with me when i say harry killed voldemort
DRACO MALFOY
Getting a crush on someone was already hard enough for Draco to do
To be able to look past someone's flaws and finally see the beauty inside of someone
But all of that was quickly ruined once he found out you weren't just Harry Potter's sibling but his TWIN?
He genuinely gets so upset and angry not only at you but himself
He's not sure how to handle this information
But at the end, he decides that he can't stand the idea of dating Harry Potter's twin and possibly growing to be Harry Potter's brother-in-law
So he tries to avoid you at all times
But he can't, his body just won't allow him
And also, you're really good at finding him
In the end, he learns to accept it but Harry and Draco still bicker and fight
Even when you guys are 20+ years old, they still fight like siblings - which is actually perfect since they're brothers in law now
TOM RIDDLE
After Harry defeated his father, aka Voldemort, and brought "peace" to the world - he's hated his guts
Because although Voldemort was a mass murder, genocide supporter, blood racist, classist, backstabbing, asshole... That was still Tom's dad
But even then, Voldemort wasn't a great father. He was actually the worst father to ever live. For all of Tom's childhood, he was brain washed and tortured to believe his father was amazing, and sadly it worked on him
So finding out that his s/o, which was already an EXTREMELY rare sight since he can't tolerate anyone, was Harry Potter's twin....
Oh, he goes fucking insane and runs away to the forbidden forrest to "process" all of his emotions (he kills almost every animal in there out of pure strength)
Falling for the person who's related to your father's killer is not easy to handle
So,,, honestly I think Tom would break up with you and never give you a shot again
But, he still owns you - he just can't be with you duhhh
If you ever try to move on or get a new boyfriend, he simply make them "disappear"
It makes you isolate yourself from the dating world - but thank god Tom is there to offer to be fwb!
(this was his plan all along. he will never stop loving you but he doesn't have the guts to fully commit to a relationship anyways but he still wants you - so fwb is the easiest solution for him to avoid the guilt of actually dating you whilst still getting to own you in some way)
MATTHEO RIDDLE
He's the exact opposite of Tom, he actually really respects and likes Harry
After Harry killed Voldemort, he felt so free. It was like Harry got rid of the shackle that was keeping him down for so long
Unlike Tom, Mattheo always knew that what their father was doing was wrong and cruel - but he was forced to go along with the family's plans because he'd be punished if he didn't
Not only that, Mattheo and Harry both play Quidditch and are good rivals - he loves the competition
So he actually gets along fine with Harry
When he finds out you two are actually TWINS he's so shocked like omg
He wonders what would have happened if you ate Harry while in the womb or smth
And he also wonders why you and Harry aren't exactly identical (you are identical... mattheo just doesn't understand why harry has glasses and you don't....)
Doesn't mind bringing Harry on a couple of dates - But when Harry does come... it's basically like you're third wheeling
Your cute dates are ruined because these two dumbass men decide to do stupid stuff
Like for example, a cute date of mini golfing got ruined because Harry and Mattheo decided to see who could chuck their golf ball the farthest
They ended up breaking multiple windows...
Or when Mattheo took you out to go ice skating but it got ruined because fucking Harry surprised Mattheo with hockey gear
The two ended up playing hockey,,,, just a 1v1,,,, and crashed into so many bystanders that they just shut down the rink
They are now brothers for life... you must deal with this
THEODORE NOTT
When he finds out you're twins, he takes such a big sigh of relief
"Oh my gosh, that why you guys always hang out... I thought you might have been dating."
Instantly, you want to vomit in your mouth
Theo has little to no history with Harry, besides bullying Harry during their first few years at Hogwarts
But Theo was never a good bully... especially when he was younger
Because he was still learning English and had the THICKEST Italian accent that you barely understood him
One time in their 2nd year, Theo came up to Harry and insulted his nerdy glasses
But Harry simply tilted his head, "Sorry, no espanol."
From that day, it's a strong inside joke between all the Slytherin boys and Theo can never escape it
Harry's unintentional roast made Theo study English 10x times harder than he ever did before
So he's kinda grateful to him in a way but he does wanna get back at him
He's super chill around Harry and the two get along fine and dandy but nothing too special
They both respect each other a lot actually and don't cross any boundaries with each other
Since they're kinda similar actually: quidditch players, pull tons of bitches, decently smart, and "foreign" in some way
Basically: coolest in laws ever
LORENZO BERKSHIRE
Oh my fucking god these two suck each other dicks
The amount of glazing they do for each other is CRAZYYY
When Enzo finds out you're twins with Harry - he's so happy because Harry and Enzo are actually really cool with each other
They both play quidditch together sometimes, play the same games, and they love the same shows
You basically lose your boyfriend... to your brother
Everywhere you two go,,, Harry is invited against your will
Going to watch a movie? Harry and Enzo are gonna share a blanket and leave you in the cold
Going to an arcade? Harry and Enzo will play every single game against each other and even take selfies of their wins
Fuck, even going shopping, the two banter and chat while you try on clothes
One time they got bored of waiting for you to try stuff on so they LEFT YOU and went to go get MATCHING T-SHIRTS???!?!??!?!?!???
Of course,,, you and Enzo do get alone time - some times
But you honestly love seeing how strong Enzo and Harry's bond is because it makes you happy that you picked the perfect boyfriend for your family
It's even better when Harry get his yearly girlfriend (that he will eventually leave heart broken)
So now you can go on double dates!!!
And hopefully the girl that Harry is with is cool, so that way you can also share a strong bond just like Enzo and Harry
But you can't get too attached.... your brother is a man-whore after all... 😞
