A particle that marks a direct object

Example:

スミスさんは車を買いました

Sumisu san wa kuruma o kaimashita

Mr Smith bought a car

私はケーキを食べています

I'm eating cake

Note that the direct object in English is not always marked by o (を)in Japanese. Example:

私は英語が分かる (I understand English)　➞ Refer to Lesson #4

In some constructions, the direct object marker o (を)can be replaced by the subject marker ga (が)

Example

ミルクを飲む (Miruku o nomu) ➞ I drink milk

To: ミルクが飲みたい (Miruku ga nomitai) ➞ I want to drink milk

日本語を話す (Nihongo o hanasu) ➞ I speak Japanese

To: 日本語が話せる (Nihongo ga hanaseru) ➞ I can speak Japanese

O (を) cannot occur more than once in the clause. It is grammatically incorrect.

父は私に(×を)酒を飲ませた

Chichi wa watashi ni (o) sake o nomaseta

My father made me drink sake (liquor)

When a sentence involves the verb noboru (のぼる) to climb, there is an important difference between the use of the particle o (を) and that of ni (に)

Mari climbed Tokyo Tower

マリーは東京タワーにのぼった

Mari wa toukyou tawa- ni nobotta

Mari went up Tokyo Tower

The particle de (で) also marks the space in which an action takes place. The difference between de (で) and o (を) is that de (で) can be used with any action verb while o (を) can be used only with motion verbs such as aruku (歩く) to walk, tobu (飛ぶ) to fly, etc.

When either de (で) or o (を) is possible, there is usually a subtle difference between the sentence

Guys, one day, you’re going to get caught with your pants down – and you’ll at least look cool if you’re wearing the latest line of underwear from JOCKEY. The American brand has a long history in Japan, nearly 40 years. Since 2004, JOCKEY wear for men and women has been sold in Japan by JC Ltd Corp, a subsidiary of Aichi-based Chiecas Co Ltd, which designs and sells underwear for men, women and children.

Heading up JC Ltd is Taro Usami, 40. Born in Aichi, Usami studied law at Tokyo’s Aoyama Gakuin, before going to the UC Santa Barbara where he obtained his master’s degree in Asian studies. After working in the U.S. for a couple of years, Usami went to Beijing to study Chinese and then moved to Singapore to work for an American company for one year. Upon returning to Japan 12 years ago, he joined Chiecas, which was established by his father.

Currently based in Kiyosu, Aichi, Usami regularly visits Tokyo, which is where Japan Today editor Chris Betros caught up with him to hear more about JOCKEY.

You must do a lot of traveling.

Yes. I come to Tokyo every week. I wish I could get some mileage on the shinkansen.

What is JOCKEY’s history in Japan?

The brand was at the peak of its popularity 30-40 years ago. We became the sole licensee in Japan for JOCKEY in 2004. Consumers in their 40s and 50s think of JOCKEY as a genuine underwear brand. When JOCKEY first came to Japan, there were hardly any other foreign brands. Now the business is much more competitive with a lot of designer brands.

Why did Chiecas set up a separate company for JOCKEY?

The nature of the JOCKEY business is a little different from our existing business. We usually sell our products through middle men or wholesale companies. We don’t usually sell directly to retailers because we don’t have direct accounts with department stores.

How do you sell JOCKEY in Japan?

For men’s underwear, we have a sales agent, a company called Fukusuke, which sells at 60 outlets such as department stores like Matsuya Ginza, Tobu, Hanshin. We provide all the information from the U.S. and our merchandising plan. They do everything else.

What are your major products?

Underwear for men, ladies and children. We are also starting to sell yoga wear because more and more consumers want to buy something between underwear and outerwear.

What are the latest items?

The 3D-Innovations underwear. It has 8-way stretch capabilities so it exactly follows the shape of your body. JOCKEY scanned the bodies of 10,000 people in the U.S. of all ethnic backgrounds and ages. It uses high quality cotton and spandex. The fabric is elastic, so after you stretch it, the fabric will return to its original shape.

Are the products changed for Japan?

Designs are inspired by American designs and we have to follow head office. They are very strict on labels and the swirl mark logo. The packaging is a little bit different for Japan.

How do you market the brand?

On March 19, when we launched 3D-Innovations, we had a press conference with Junichi Ishida. He was very familiar with the brand and a lot of TV programs covered his comments on JOCKEY. Building brand awareness is still our biggest challenge.

Do you often visit stores to see how your merchandise is displayed?

Yes. I often visit stores on weekends with my wife. It’s very hard to get enough space to display everything. Some department stores don’t even want to show the JOCKEY logo. I’d like to see them promote the brand image more.

What is a typical day for you?

I start with email correspondence from around 8:30 a.m. and after checking incoming email, I usually meet with my staff to make sure things are going OK. Then I may be out visiting clients or making business trips to Tokyo and Osaka.

Do you wear JOCKEY?

I do but it is not a company rule.

How do you like to relax when you are not working?

I like all kinds of sports. My son is into baseball, and I like bike riding.

Thank you for adding your comments! Tsunakawa told Amou that he had felt like getting Doumeki (ch.36). It would mean he started planning to make Doumeki a regular member of Sakura Family. So, he has been quite careful in confirming Doumeki’s identity. In chapter 37, he inquired in person about Doumeki’s relationships with women, pointing out that “You must like toshima [the literal meaning is aged, usually used for women].” Doumeki agreed that he preferred toshima [he did not explicitly say they were women]. Yashiro is 11 years older than he, and I had been thinking Doumeki was still single-mindedly in love with Yashiro.

Doumeki replied to Tsunakawa, “I take care of it myself” or “I do it myself,” and added, “sessou ga nai node (because I am unprincipled).” I could replace them only rigidly as usual...

sessou: noun; constancy, fidelity, integrity, chastity, or one's beliefs, principles, assertions (unexpectedly dense concept to depict in English...)

ga: case particle

nai: adjective; non-existential, one does not have, or meaning of negate

node: conjunctive; because, since, as

Although the words are not uncommon including sessou, it is difficult to understand what Doumeki was trying to say. Tsunakawa said, “What do you mean by that?” “If you are unprincipled, you can sleep with any woman (an unprincipled man, that is all the more reason for sleeping with women indiscriminately). I cannot understand you.” And me, either. Why is even masturbation an “unprincipled” deed for Doumeki??

Doumeki’s feelings remain unclear, at least when he was assigned to chase Kido, a former member of Matsubara-gumi (an affiliate of Doushinkai, disbanded in the past), he seemed to be unsettled back of his mind (ch.38). Since any time in four years, he might have been checking on Yashiro’s movements in order not to stumble upon him inadvertently rather than to reunite with. Tsunakawa was going to carry on observing Doumeki closing into the old haunts.

Doumeki is in the state of being sexually quite principled, in other words, chaste. If he is going to dedicate his chastity to Yashiro, that would be understandable. However, it seems that even masturbation is something he should not do or is allowed only compellingly. That is going too far... I suspect that he blocks the exercise of his sexual ability [function?] in general.

As you mentioned in another ask me, in Tobu tori ha kotoba wo motanai (the translated title: Flying birds never speak, end of vol.6), Nanahara said that Yashiro’s sleeping with men was not a tendency of his own choice. Then some realization flashed in Doumeki’s mind.

Doumeki said that he wished after the Aoi incident he had killed his father (ch.2), at the same time he was disgusted by his own violent nature and the sexual function he too, had within himself. Besides, he held self-punishment for not taking care of his sister. He thought it was all right to remain impotent.

I do not think Doumeki does not have any resentment against Yashiro for throwing him away, yet on the other hand, he could be driven by remorse that he might have done something wrong to Yashiro. It seems to me that Doumeki places his own sex at the core of the remorse and restrains him from using(?) his sexuality. Despite his being extremely calm in bed with Yashiro, he would not currently be impotent. I assume that he is, yes, self-punishing again. He might be scared again that he is like his father. Yashiro had told him in chapter 24 that he was different from his father...

In the meeting with Tsunakawa, Yashiro must have been prepared to explain to some extent what had happened four years ago. Doumeki knew that, sat with his head upright, and listened attentively. Yashiro did what he had to do as a former employer -- he recommended Doumeki to Sakura Family as trustworthy man, even though it was a follow-up. The utterance that Doumeki recklessly saved Yashiro's life was both true and had the nuance of gratitude. As you mentioned, Doumeki looked surprised that Yashiro commented so. He did not expect Yashiro to thank him, I guess.

According to the monologue of Nanahara, Yashiro was speaking unusually honestly up to almost 50 percent. I think that the keystone of Yashiro's speech was a pure person like Doumeki should not have been close to a twisted person like himself. He had “grieved” that such a Doumeki would have tried to follow him, therefore he had let go of Doumeki. That was also true and would have been a kind of clarification about his past choice. Doumeki had been back to being expressionless, yet the fact that his profile was in close-up indicated that he heard it anyway and had some thoughts on it.

Changed and unchanged have been the keywords since the meeting with Yashiro and Tsunakawa in chapter 42 (vol.7). Doumeki looks to have changed completely into yakuza, but is it still Doumeki inside? I have begun to assume the possibility that he tried to break off his lovesickness for Yashiro during the four years. He did not go to see Yashiro despite his tracking Yashiro’s movement. He cannot and will not forget Yashiro, only he might have tried to sublimate those whole affairs as a remembrance, and he might have thought that he could already have done so. At the beginning of their reunion, it looked as if Yashiro were the person of bittersweet memory (ch.41, 42).

Yet in the washroom, when Inami’s name appeared on Yashiro’s phone, another emotion was evoked (ch.43, vol.7). Doumeki’s words were offensive: “You still do it with anyone as used to be, right? (You are still sleeping with men promiscuously)” Yashiro, in the bathroom, pondered the words hurled at him for a few panels, and replied, “What makes you think I have changed in just four years? (No, I have not changed).” Doumeki widened his eyes and the momentary expression on his face was not disturbing; in fact, it appeared to be the opposite. On the next page, however, he put his head down and muttered with an expression of discouragement, “No, [no subject] cannot change so easily.” From those on, he held on to a series of provocative words and actions. What was the precise subject of “cannot change so easily”? He might have been disappointed in himself, realizing that he, too, could not change – that he could not let go of his intense feelings for Yashiro. He has exposed his obsession with Yashiro around the edges. He himself must be aware of that now.

Doumeki informed his boss that he was not in a physical relationship with any woman, and he was in a so-called ‘my dominant hand is my lover’ state, adding “as I am unprincipled (ch.37, vol.7).” I suspect that he intentionally suppresses the utilization(?) of his bodily functions, which was able to say had been restored by Yashiro. My inference is that he must really not make even his own hand his lover, still, he allows that, thus it may mean unprincipled. Similar to his coping (none coping) after the Aoi incident. I would say that had been self-punishment. If he feels the need to do so again, he could have any realization about the significance of the affair of volume 5 to Yashiro. Or, to say further, about Yashiro’s sexual behaviour.

Yashiro’s sentiment toward Doumeki is romantic, regardless of how he perceives himself (ch.46). He had been giving his heart to Kageyama in silence for long years and once secretly kissed Doumeki (ch.5, vol.2). Becoming a smart, skillful, and ‘lecherous’ yakuza leader, down deep inside he retained such tender feelings. Can it be counterposed to ‘lechery’? Being ‘lecherous’ was a strategy for him to find pleasure in violence and focus on it in order to survive the assault he had been forced to. After the night with Doumeki, the strategy turned ineffective – the indiscriminate pleasure was gone. Even so, he has any reason to need Inami’s violence. The persona of ‘lechery’ may be unusual, but however unusual it may be, for him it is a means of survival found in extreme conditions. In volume 5, Doumeki unintentionally tore Yashiro’s persona away. Yashiro confronting Hirata was driven by the urge for self-destruction more than usual, while no doubt he did not want Doumeki to die. Eventually, he threw Doumeki away almost desperately. It was also to send Doumeki back to the non-yakuza world. It was supposed to have been.

In chapter 40 (vol.7), reuniting Doumeki, Yashiro’s view was distorted as he walked alone to the bridge. And his expression resembled the one he had in chapter 32 (vol.6) when he was fastened his seatbelt by Doumeki after the heated argument about whether to get out of the car or not. Doumeki’s words that his time and body were his own were impressive, declaring that he was in the yakuza world by his own will. What was going through Yashiro’s mind at that time?

He overall highly praised Doumeki at the meeting with Tsunakawa, and I believe that they were in effect directed toward Doumeki (ch.42). He meant that a pure person like Doumeki should not have been close to a twisted person like himself… His distortions – for example, ‘lechery’ – could contaminate Doumeki, and the yakuza world surrounding him could take Doumeki’s life. In chapter 34, when Doumeki was shot in his left chest by Hirata, and when Doumeki dropped down, it seemed that Yashiro’s face was more like a dead. He looked discernibly insane beating Hirata up with the rubble. Amidst the roar of the plane, realizing anything infinitely close to love, he touched Doumeki’s face. Simply put, he let the man go because he held him very dear. But this time Yashiro has grabbed Doumeki. In chapter 49, Yashiro repeats, “I have not changed essentially,” which is not true.

A well-equipped barge on a wide riverbank, slowly moving upstream. The novelist is sitting on the roof of the barge. There are white papers and pen in front of him. He is writing, a detailed description of the river, buildings, temporary sand dunes on the banks of the river, tents in Tripol of few small rural fairs. The novelist continues to write page after page, today he is satisfied. But he has lost sight of some events. The bride is riding in a small boat coming from the opposite direction having two opposite feelings in her heart. She left behind his father, mother, adolescence…... Moments of anguish await. The prospect of a new life in a new place, the excitement of having a family with her husband. A young woman in her thirties, losing her sindur, with tears in her eyes, fearing an uncertain future, is returning home from the ghat. The dumb boy is standing beside the burning cheetah, he has just lost his father. A young woman at the fair forever, sitting hunched over and buying glass bangles without knowing that, her dream man, lost his life on the battlefield two days before or the young man who sits on the bank of the river with a bored look, reminiscing about the happy days spent with his beloved and weeping silently. Due to caste and religion, his beloved was never found in his life. These small feelings of happiness and sorrow, which are deeply rooted in human life, which are contemporary but eternal….. was noticed by a person. He was a writer of short stories. The author is weaving a garland of joys and sorrows, acknowledging the emotions of those unspoken people.

About the author

SUBHASHIS CHOWDHURY, born in the year 1966 at Chittaranjan; a railway township situated in Bengal-Jharkhand border. Primary & high schooling completed at his birth place. Came to Kolkata for higher studies and got admitted in Maharaja Manindra Chandra College. Started writing on the wall magazine of that college with the pen-name ‘SUBHO’. But, returned from Kolkata after couple of years after getting job in Indian Railways at his native place. Writing had been stopped but became a good reader of Bengali literature consists of novel, short story & poem. Realising that the short stories are more lively than the novels, affection was generated towards the short stories; specially written by eminent writers like Ramapada Chowdhury, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay, Banoful, Manik Bandopadhyay etc. Got inspiration from their short stories and started writing seriously in the year 2017.

You Don't Have to Be Psychic to Find HINAMATSURI's Real-World Locations

HINAMATSURI is shaping up to be the best comedy of the young spring anime season, which isn’t all too surprising considering the show’s absurd story and extremely wacky but lovable cast. The story revolves around Nitta, a mid-level yakuza executive with a soft spot for expensive vases, whose extravagant bachelor lifestyle suddenly gets turned upside down when a young girl confined in an egg-shaped metal pod randomly teleports into his apartment. You’d think that a notorious yakuza would make short work of the intruder, but as it turns out, Hina has extremely powerful telekinetic powers (and she’s not afraid to use them), leaving Nitta no other choice than to take her in. Their odd life together is obviously not destined to run smoothly, but they quickly develop a genuine father-daughter relationship.

From the tiny bits of flashbacks that we got about Hina, she seemed to have been exploited for her powers in the past, which understandably prompted her to escape – and to be more precise, to Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, where she settles into her new "ordinary" life incredibly fast.

But her transition from unscrupulously used weapon of mass destruction to ordinary middle school girl in Tokyo isn’t going to happen without any hiccups, since she has to release her pent-up powers every now and then. Luckily, Nitta is surprisingly capable of keeping her in line, so she actually still hasn’t gone on a Godzilla-like rampage through Ikebukuro, like the image above would suggest.

The giant apartment complex in which Nitta resides is not real, but it would’ve been located somewhere in Ikebukuro, which is a commercial and entertainment district in the north of Tokyo and the main setting of HINAMATSURI. Pictured above are the Seibu and Parco department stores on the east side of Ikebukuro Station.

And this is the Tobu department store on the west side of the station.

Ikebukuro has a lot to offer for anime fans, as the area recently established a name for itself as a center of otaku culture, mainly geared towards the female audience. The area also has several arcades like Sega and Adores to offer.

Countless other anime also have Ikebukuro as their setting, with the most prominent one probably being Durarara!! The latest episode of Steins;Gate 0 also has Okabe standing at the exact same spot as Nitta here.

So it’s not without reason that Hina calls Ikebukuro a "dangerous town full of temptation," although for her the temptation seems to be the various restaurants and food stands in area. The Bakudan Yaki shop seems to have especially caught her interest with its extra-large takoyaki and her absolute favorite, salmon roe (ikura). I also always see the shop having some kind of anime collaboration going on when I’m around myself.

As already mentioned, Ikebukuro gained reputation as an area catering more to female anime fans, and Otome Road (otome meaning girl) right here is at the center of it all. Here you’ll find stores like Animate, K-Books, and Mandarake, but also several butler cafés.

And Otome Road is also where Anzu, our second otherworldly super-powered girl, arrives.

Now, let’s move on to another part of Tokyo, which should already be fairly familiar to people who watched SHIROBAKO or sweetness & lightning. HINAMATSURI is the next anime joining the ranks of shows that feature Skip Street, located north of Musashi-Sakai Station.

Skip Street appearing in an anime can be used as a good indicator that the studio producing the show is located somewhere nearby, in the western part of the Tokyo Metropolis, which is home to a plethora of anime studios. And indeed, Studio Feel, the studio producing HINAMATSURI, is only located one station away, near Higashi-Koganei. Skip Street is simply conveniently located for many anime studios around the area, making it easy for them to collect reference material there. Summed up, whenever you see Skip Street, Musashi-Sakei Station, or any other station on the Chuo Main Line for that matter, you can safely assume that the anime studio itself is also not too far off.

Interestingly, the ramen restaurant where Nitta first meets Anzu does not actually exist in real life.

But all the other stores on Skip Street have been accurately reproduced.

With Studio Feel located along the Chuo Main Line, you’ll find that most of the other non-Ikebukuro locations are not located too far away either, like this one right here near Mitaka Station, only two stops away from the studio.

My personal highlight so far, the cabaret club scene, takes place near Kichijoji, only three train stops away from the studio. At the end of the second episode, Hina wants Nitta to spend more quality time with her, resulting in both of them, Hina’s middle school friend, and a gang of drunkards gleefully hitting up an extravagant cabaret club in Kichijoji, perfectly executing HINAMATSURI’s absurd and hilarious humor. By the way, the cabaret club does not exist in real life (sadly).

Golden Week Travels (2/3)

Tochigi

My plan for the day was simple enough: for the whole day, I’ll just be at Nikko Edomura (Edo Wonderland). I woke up at 5am in the morning so that I would be in Asakusa in time for an express train to Kinugawa Onsen and take a bus to the amusement park from there.

Unfortunately for me, I got lost in the station and arrived at the correct platform 2 minutes after the train had already left. The only other way I could arrive in Kinugawa Onsen before 11am was if I transfer multiple times, or take the Limited Express train. Obviously, the lazy ass that I am, decided to take the Limited Express train. There was one leaving at:645 am but I had no luck and the tickets were sold out. Hooray for Golden week... I did get an 8:33 Limited Express train though it doesn’t go all the way to Kinugawa Onsen so I took it until Shimo-imaichi and transferred there. Once I arrived at Kinugawa Onsen, I took a 420 yen bus ride to the amusement park.

Okay, so I didn’t plan enough. I actually wasted a lot of time and money getting to Edomura. Here are things I discovered and realized:

If I was taking the Limited Express anyway, I should have gone straight to Tobu Nikko station because it is actually just a minute’s walk away from JR Nikko station.

There is a FREE bus ride between JR Nikko station and the amusement park at certain times of the day.

The bus from Kinugawa Onsen station has a “Free Pass” which isn’t actually free but is an 820 yen ticket that allows the holder unlimited rides with that bus for a whole day. The bus goes around and stops at multiple tourist spots besides Edomura, such as the Tobu World Square. The price is equal to a two-way ride to Edomura so if you’re touring the spots, it’s very worth it.

Edomura was so much fun. It was my first time alone in an amusement park and I don’t really recommend being alone but if you want to anyway, I just want you to know it’s still going to be fun.

Before I even talk about the shows, the activities, the food, etc, the place itself is just wonderful! You get a feeling of old Japan. All the buildings are in the traditional design, all the stores are also in the old structures, all the staff are in traditional attire (be it a normal kimono, a samurai outfit, a ninja outfit, etc.), and even the signs and the way the staff talk are all ancient Japanese!

You can rent traditional attire so you can blend in with the environment. A lot of people do this, especially kids and large groups or young couples. I even saw one family who didn’t need to rent because they came in full attire. In the river, you can take a boat ride with a traditional rower. Or you can eat street food at (literally) the side of the street while drinking alcohol. Or you can enter the blacksmith’s house and see how swords are made. Or you can go to the horse stalls to watch or feed a horse.

I watched the Great Ninja Show, which was amazing!! It was so funny when they gave us pieces of paper and before the show began, they told us it can be used to throw at the actors at any time. LOL Even if you don’t understand Japanese, I recommend watching it! There’s limited dialogue and although it’s funny if you understand them, the illusions and the stunts that the actors perform are reasons enough to watch. I am very sad that this was the only show I got to watch. Every single time since that I decided to watch the other shows, I end up getting distracted by something else, forgetting the time, and realizing it’s too late.

I ate yakitori for lunch and shared a table with a family of four. Their older daughter kept looking at me and when I decided to be un-Japanese and say “hi”, she smiled so wide and waved at me. It was definitely a highlight of my day. When I finished eating and stood up to leave, she waved at me and said “bye-bye”. Awwe cutie pie. The parents said sorry (which really wasn’t necessary) and thanks to me for entertaining their daughter. Thanks, too, it was super nice. <3

When I visited the jewelry/bead-arranging house (sorry, I don’t actually know what it’s called), I got to talk with an adorable father-daughter duo, the auntie staff (in-charge of the place), and 2 other staff who came in to hang out a little later. (This makes the whole “old Japanese village” feel even more amazing when the 2 others just came in the house and greeted the auntie and she just told them to “sit over there” like normal neighbors and friends).

The auntie was teaching the daughter to create a flower bead and the father was saying how he used to do this in his time. After talking a while with the auntie staff and mentioning I was Filipino, she reintroduced herself to me in Filipino! “Ikinagagalak ko kayong makilala.” I was amazed! Her pronunciation was great, too, actually. Before I left, she handed me a small giveaway candy because it’s “Kodomo no Hi” (Day for Children). I joked that I’m still a kid yey!

I went in the ninja house and the ninja maze. Both were fun though I’d have enjoyed the ninja house more if I didn’t have my heavy travelling backpack with me as I ducked and climbed in narrow spaces. I also watched some activities that they hold for kids such as the “Catch the thief” activity I watched in the morning and the “Ninja Training” I watched in the afternoon. Even if you can’t join these because you’re no longer under 10 (lol), they’re fun to watch and I honestly could have spent the whole day watching these activities because they are all over the “village”.

I also went inside the slanted house, which is... a slanted house. Unfortunately, heat was getting to me and the slant just really made me feel sick. I took the first emergency exit and didn’t make it past the first room (I suck ;__;). It’s actually a two-story building :(

There was also a “prison”, which is actually a recreation of what prisons before were like. A building also serves as a wax-doll museum for how execution and torture was done. There was also a “Modern Technology Museum” which isn’t about today’s computers and all, but really about inventions from the past that have survived in some way or form in the current Japan (e.g. wooden combs, uchiwa fans, etc.).

One of the best things I decided to do inside was also when I just bought kakigoori and decided to sit down and relax at a riverside bench. When the traditional boat passed, the rower actually interacted with me and the other people relaxing at the benches, commenting on our snacks.

In the later part of the afternoon, there was also a parade (not sure if this is an appropriate word) for the geisha, just like in the past. It was beautiful! I only noticed it because suddenly there was a large crowd near the geisha house.

I’m not even sure if I was able to mention everything I wanted to mention here. But I would 100% love to come back here, hopefully next time with friends and/or family. It would totally be fun!

There are three Davids.

Two of them don’t exist anymore, not really.

The first David is the one Toby and his sisters try their hardest to protect, the one that is impossibly bright and not yet able to fight his own battles.

He can be annoying sometimes, this little puppy, always nipping at Toby’s heels, always wanting Toby’s attention and approval. Toby’s long-suffering sighs fool absolutely no one; they all see how he patiently teaches this David all the things he’ll need to know in the years to come.

2. THE GODS HAVE CONSPIRED - PROLOGUE

January 2038

Inauguration Day

A long time ago a friend of mine (though there was nothing amicable about our relationship at the time) told me what sort of man it took to be President.

“The man in that job shouldn’t have to be presented with anything!” he bellowed at me. “It’s for someone who grabs it and holds on to it, for someone who thinks the gods have conspired to bring him to this place, that destiny demands of him this service!”

Ten year-old Toby Ziegler had spent the afternoon playing baseball with his sister Judith and her friends. Now that Toby was ten and the rest of them were about to enter High School they didn’t often let him play with them, but today they had relented and they had played until the sun had gone down.

The twenty boys (and Judith, the only girl) had gathered their things and had split up to head home, with five of the boys making their way back home with Judith and Toby because they all lived on the same street

They weren’t far from their street when shots rang out.

4. THE WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT

1966

Westport, CT

Miriam Lyman heard the wooden floor behind her creak. She put her book aside and turned to look at the little boy she knew she would find, his walk and the sound it made was unmistakable. At five years old Joshua Lyman already swaggered; it was a walk befitting a child who was his family’s little prince, spoiled and adored by all.

In his small hands there was a large leather bound book.

"What have you got there, Joshua?“

“It’s one of your scrapbooks, Nana,” he said, lifting the book higher in order to give his grandmother a better look.

5. WHILE NORMAN SLEPT

New York City

December 1995

With a quick flick of the wrist, Joshua Lyman, Esq. tossed his subway token. And, with the impatience of a highly-strung racehorse, he waited to hear the click that always followed the sound of his token clattering against a metal surface, the click that told him that he could push the turnstile and dash full speed toward the subway train.

6. INKBLOTS

Josh is having a difficult time staying connected to what is going on around him. He wants to be aware of his surroundings, to be able to call out for help. But all he can think about as sirens wail and red lights flash is how hard it is to breathe, how much his chest hurts, and how much the blood on the concrete looks like an inkblot.

His mind begins to wander through memories dulled by time, made hazier by the pain.

Rorschach. It’s a funny name, like one of Joanie’s composers.

7. AN INVITATION

Late May 1987

Westport, Connecticut

Rachel Abravanel felt her bed dip beneath her and she groaned.

“Buenos dias, Rahelica,” said the distinctly deep voice Rachel usually found comforting, but that today brought back memories of the rare days she hadn’t wanted to go to school and her father would have to coax her out of bed.

“Dad,” she whined without making a move to free herself from her cocoon of blankets.

Rachel’s father responded with a low chuckle.

8. IT’S QUIET UPTOWN

November 18, 1969

It was Noah Lyman’s first day back at work since his daughter’s death.

The firm had been extremely sympathetic, had told him to take as much time off as he needed. They’d promised to farm his cases out, everything would be taken care of.

His colleagues felt guilty despite Joanie’s death being no fault of theirs; Noah and Ada had been at a dinner party for the partners and their wives the night it happened after all.

9. PROMISES

Ryan Pierce speed-walked past desks, flipped through papers, and managed to avoid crashing into any of the support staff that zipped by.

Ryan had news for the President-elect on the people they had been vetting for Senior Staff positions. The majority of them had worked for the campaign and had made it through a round of vetting for their campaign jobs so it hadn’t taken long to make sure there weren’t any skeletons deeper in the closets of people who were going to be working in the White House.

10. SHIVA IN THE WHITE HOUSE - Ryan

Washington D.C. - 2043

Ryan Pierce rounded up the most trusted members of the Senior Staff and told them that their jobs were going to be a little harder for the next few days and that he expected them to rise to the occasion. There would be no setting of fires that would require the President to put out, they would make sure that the West Wing continued to run like a well-oiled machine. Ryan was willing to move heaven and earth to make sure nothing ended up on the President’s literal and figurative desk unless it absolutely needed to.

11. SHIVA IN THE WHITE HOUSE - Sam’s Revelation

Maryland - 2043

Sam and Toby were sitting in a secluded corner of Andy’s backyard. He’d come directly to Andy’s from the airport with Ainsley. Sam’s two Secret Service agents were parked in front of the house and Ainsley was in the living room with CJ, Andy, and the rest of Toby’s family.

Toby had known that there was something on his friend’s mind the moment he’d seen him so he dragged him outside and away from everyone else as fast as his old joints would allow, and had waited patiently for whatever it was that was eating away at Sam to come out.

“I loved him,” Sam whispered, half to himself, as if the statement was more for Sam’s own benefit than Toby’s.

I don’t really have any other published stuff (nothing I’m particularly keen to share) but I do have a my massive af WEST WING vignette collection The Gods Have Conspired currently in progress. The following are excerpts from the beginnings of vignettes I’m working on for that collection.

The Catskills 1966

Several heads turn when Felix appears by the pool. He’s wearing short teal swim trunks that show off his long lean legs, a towel that hangs from his neck obscures most of his chest but a small gleaming Star of David, which hangs from a gold chain is visible in its nest of sparse chest hair, catches peoples’ eyes and makes them wonder what the rest of his chest looks like and hope that he’ll toss the towel off soon. Felix cuts a handsome figure. He’s no strapping David hewn from marble but there is something of a classical handsomeness to him, the contrapposto pose he assumed as he took in his surroundings was certainly giving the girls at the pool ideas.

“So, what's it like being a Lyman?” the young bikini-clad woman asked Josh*.

“Honestly? It's a pain in the ass.”

“Oh,” his companion responded, not expecting that answer at all. “But like, everyone loves your family, you guys are like a huge deal.”

“Yeah, but there are certain things Lymans are supposed to do. Like, just about my entire family is in politics, you know? And that’s not what I want to do with my life. I mean fuck, my mom is an actress and even she’s really involved in political shit. My grandfather was president, my great-great-grandfather was president, so what, I wasn’t around for any of that so why the fuck should anyone expect me to be involved?”

Josh cocked his head and raised an eyebrow.

“Well you didn’t always hate them,” she replied, waving the picture she had found in front of him. “What’s that you’ve got in your arms?”

“That’s Heifetz,” he said as he looked at his smiling five year old self cradling the grey cat like a baby, the cat looking almost indulgent and completely used to being handled by a rough-and-tumble little boy.

“Dad, don’t you dare jinx it or I will make you go outside turn around, spit, curse, and whatever else you are supposed to do, I don’t care how old you are. We’re not done yet, and you are already trying to jinx it.”

“Well, leave it to the Jewish President to shake things up in Israel,” _____ said, after flashing his father a cocky grin that made him look like a teenager instead of a middle-aged man.

“Just give up, Tobus. He’s gonna be calling you that even after you quit fighting it,” CJ said. “Isn’t that right little man?”

“Jay!” Zach shouted, raising his arms up toward CJ, his way of asking to be picked up.

“While you’re busy being a grump over the name ‘Bee’ I am going to embrace the name I’ve been given by my diminutive pal,” CJ said as she lifted Zach up on began bouncing him on her lap, much to his delight.

Annie suddenly went rigid on top of _______.

“Oh my god, my grandparents had sex in this room.”

“What?”

“My grandparents, they had sex. In this room.”

“Yeah, well I am sure they’ve changed the mattress and sheets since then, even if it is the same bed frame,” _______ said with his attempt at an innocent smile.

“______ ______!” Annie shouted as she grabbed a pillow and hit her husband with it.

“Ow, Annie, you’re hitting the President of the United States!”

Beginning of 4th year of Seaborn Administration

Josh Lyman had run as fast as his body would allow from the security check-in desk to the office outside the Oval.

“Ainsley?”

“Hello, Josh. You alright there?”

“Yeah, I just need to catch my breath.”

Ainsley nodded.

“He’s in the situation room right now,” Ainsley informed him.

“D’you know what’s going on?”

“I don’t know much, I just know what they’ve been reporting in the news.”

“Which really isn’t much, is it?”

“No.”

There was very little the news was able to reveal at this point, the rioters were making it hard for any foreign correspondents to get close to the embassy.

Germany 1945 Jakob tried to steady himself when he felt his legs begin to weaken and threatened to give way underneath him.

He felt his chest begin to tighten and he found himself forced to lean up against the wall. He had managed to get through so much in the last several weeks without letting his emotions get the better of him but he could no longer keep up the pretense that he wasn’t affected by what he saw. The city of his birth in ruins.

It was impossible for him not to be conflicted, his liberators had been left with no options, and so his beloved city had had to pay the price for the sins of its inhabitants; it had to become a shell of its former self, a daily reminder of his neighbors’ transgressions.

Josh doesn’t say anything, he decides to stare at the IV port taped to his hand.

She’s so nonchalant about it, just throws it out there while skipping a marble across a chinese checkers board.

Ok… so patterns… I use way too many commas, I often state the year (because I’m a history nerd through and through and I love to skip around to different times in my massive epics). I lowkey feel like Sophia from Golden Girls… “picture it: Sicily 1922″ hahahaha. I don’t seem to open with dialogue in my finished drafts but my WIPs usually open with dialogue. I’m too tired and lazy to keep looking for patterns ;-P

We’re getting close to the deadline for drafts

Artists,

You have one week remaining to send your stuff to [email protected]. You can send everything now, if you want to get that load off your mind. There’s an example under the cut if you need it!

What you have to send:

a description of your work

which is all that writers will see on draft claiming day, so be sure to make it interesting! I recommend writing something like a fic summary, or the summary of a fic the art could be for, as well as a short list of things you might want in the fic

a draft of your work

i.e. proof that you’ve been working on something for more than an hour.

a more detailed description

which will be sent to the claimer. This bit has to include any worldbuilding you might have thought of, as well as any story developments up until the point where the picture fits in.

EXAMPLE EMAIL

Let use the good ol’ Tobu-san and Roki-kun AU from this FIBB example post. Here is what an email would look like:

Arragned Marriage AU set in 10th century Japan. Tobu-san is the heir of the renowned Tsukishima clan. He’s been slated to marry Rumiko of the Fujikawa family, but between his hatred of everything his father stands for and his homosexuality, he really doesn’t want to. So he dresses as a peasant, leaves behind his sword, and asks the first traveller he meets to take him with them. (Just his luck, though, that Roki-kun is secretly a ninja on a mission to assassinate the Shogun…)

There will be two pics. One of them is a comic showing Tobu and Roki training together, and Roki being surprised at Tobu’s skill. The other is the pr0n ;P Not super explicit or anything, but yeah.

Other important shit for my future author (hello btw!) to know:

Okay, so Tony is this really bratty child. Okay, so he’s more like 19-20, but still... He has CAUSE to be bratty, cause Howard (gotta come up with a japanese name for him U¬¬) is a True Douche TM, but he goes overboard in a ‘only I have the truth’ sort of way. He think everyone else is dumb as nails.

Loki... he’s like THOR!Loki before all the secrets came out. Loyal, happy, but very obedient and totally down for doing “the right thing”, ie what Odin says. He clashes a lot with Tony, esp. because Tony is the firstborn and only son and used to it, and Loki can’t get over that. “what an ungrateful brat” he thinks.

Erm... there is a LOT of UST. Like, A LOT. So maybe you’ll wanna do this in a “5 times they didn’t give in to their urges and one time they did” style?? I dunno. I only ask that you write in a fight/training scene for the comic. I’m not 100% on the dialogue yet, so you can change that if you want. I’d prefer if you didn’t write the fic in 1st person or in present tense (so i think it’s weird, sue me), but everything else is up to you!

I’m very excited to be working on this!!!!

- Shigan – A close-quarter combat technique, where the user pushes their finger into a certain target a t a very high speed, leaving a wound similar to a bullet wound. - Variations: Shigan Oren (rapid fire version)/ Tobu Shigan Bachi (sharp compressed air bullets)/ Shigan Madara (both hands and half Leopard form)

- Rankyaku – Is a kicking technique, where the user kicks at a very high speed and strength level. Sending out an sharp compressed air blade, which can slice objects and humans. - Variation: Rankyaku Hyobi – In half Leopard form, shaped in a swirl, like a high speed spiraling wind that can suck in nearby standing targets. Rankyaku Gaicho – In Half leopard form, using his hands instead of the legs and forms a Rankyaku in shape of a bird.

- Soru – A vanishing speed form, where the user has to kick the ground at least ten times in the blink of an eye. It is used to avoid attacks or get near the enemy to attack him. - Variation: Kamisori – Combination of Geppo and Soru, where he runs in zigzag motion in midair.

- Kami-e – Using this, the users body goes limp in order to avoid any attacks. He looks like a floating piece of paper then. - Variation: Seimei Kikan: Kami-e Bushin – Using this, his leopard form gets smaller, better said thinner and faster.

- Rokuogan – The user places both his fists right in front of the target and launches a devastating shock wave in a forward direction. The vbburst is a reminiscence to that released by an Impact or Reject Dial. (Variation: Rokushiki Ogi: Rokuogan)

Devil Fruit // Neko-Neko no Mi (Model: Leopard) – Allows the user to transform into a leopard hybrid and a full leopard at will, making the user a leopard human. The user has more physical strength in their hybrid and full leopard forms. As a carnivorous Zoan, they are more predatory and bloodthirsty than others by nature and better adapted for combat.

He comes off as a cold and collected person, who almost never displays any emotions. Getting him to a surprised face is rather hard, you will see him way faster with a smirk on his lips. So fast that it might even annoy you because it shows that he sees himself over you or has way to much fun with you right now.

You can say he is a little sadist since he loves to inflict physical as well as emotional pain on others. This side of him gets even stronger when he is in his full beast form. He will taunt you, demoralize you and hurt you if you show even the smallest weakness in front of him.

Wanting to see his soft side? This will take a good long while, if he doesn’t see you as worth of it he won’t show it. For him, it is simply a weakness that he is not giving so easily to others. As much of a sadist, he is if you behave he won’t inflict more pain on you. Go on his nerves as his prisoner and he doesn’t mind kicking you where it hurts. What might surprise others, is that he sends Hattori Away at the start of a fight or in dangerous situations. It will be pretty rare to see him without his little feathered friend.
