Fareed Haque, Voices Rising (1988)
january 8, 2024
as part of my ongoing obsession with whatever world music is (as beautiful, diverse and useful a category as it is inherently objectionable, idiotic and racist), i was naturally intrigued by this moody-looking, wintry record with a young Fareed Haque smoldering at me from back in time.
Haque is a jazz guitarist with Pakistani and Chilean roots who was raised in Chicago. and if you know anything about me, you know i'm obsessed with third culture music. what does it mean to be a diaspora musician? how do you articulate the question of race while also trying to, in Haque's case, make a splash with his debut record (which, fun fact, was released on the musician Sting's record label)? i don't know that Haque ended racism by just making a record as a Pakistani-Chilean man. i also don't know that this is even a "world music album" – what it is, is a really good guitar-forward jazz album, best listened to with an espresso, a long skirt, and lots of cleaning to do. highly recommend for indoor listening.

Ten songs I’ve been listening to lately:
1. patti smith - gloria (inspiration for a short story I’m writing called “The Center for Responsible Living”)
2. charles mingus - nostalgia in times square (have to play drums on it with a combo)
3. nas - cops shot the kid (very catchy)
4. ryuichi sakamoto - thousand knives (something irresistable about this)
5. fareed haque - giant steps (one of my favorite versions of g.s. very drum n bass inspired on the drums and very future thinking. shout out to mr. haque)
6. baths - wilt (i love the 3 over 4 feel and the somber mood)
7. lightning bolt - usa is a psycho (lightning bolt is the no. 1 most sonically intense aural fucking of a band I have ever heard and I love them, this is their newest single from their soon-to-be-released album Sonic Citadel)
8. rejoicer - double astral move (I was exploring more of Stones Throw’s catalog recently and found that, yes, every single artist on their roster is still amazing)
9. nnamdi ogbonnaya - let gO Of my egO (criminally underrated artist, a totally bizarre math rock hip hop experience, this track is extremely, extremely fun)
10. kyeremateng atwede & the kyeremateng stars - i go die for you (this track is very romantic and sweet, a chill jam to warm your heart and you can dance as well :) )

It’s another Thursday night so that means it’s another Levitt AMP night out on the Y-Block here downtown. This is concert number 5 in a ten part concert series happening every Thursday night this summer, thanks to the Levitt AMP Grant our city won and a few other organizations for making this possible. An old soul in a young body, Dan Nimmer plays with the spirit, the passion and the soul of someone who has been on the planet much longer. With prodigious technique and an innate sense of swing, his playing often recalls that of his own heroes, specifically Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Erroll Garner and Art Tatum. As a young man, Mr. Nimmer's family inherited a piano and he started playing by ear; he was, if you will, "called" by the instrument. He studied classical piano and eventually became interested in jazz.
In 2005, Mr. Nimmer became a member of Wynton Marsalis's Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, both in which he has been a member ever since. In addition to Wynton Marsalis, Mr. Nimmer has performed and or recorded with Jimmy Cobb, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon,Chick Corea, George Benson, Houston Person, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones, Jon Faddis, Benny Golson, Brian Lynch, Lewis Nash, Peter Washington, Fareed Haque and many more.
