First of all, thank you so much! I'm absolutely thrilled to hear you love my work so much. I had to have a think on this one (and find the time to dig out my faves—why do I never use bookmarks?). shadowgast fic rec list: the modern au edition - part one

This has been a long time coming, and hopefully the start of a few, but I have been intending to make some fic rec lists for a while. I am time-poor and generally bad at remembering to bookmark fics, but I figured I shouldn't let that stop me.

I have a love for modern au's, I write many of them, and I often see arguments against them when the source material is fantasy based for a number of reasons. But, I wanted to shine a light on some out there that tickle that box for me of being delightful.

Listed below the cut are a bunch of fics I have enjoyed, in no particular order and of varying lengths. I will of course forget some, but I hope to do some more lists in the future as I have more tabs open than I can reasonably fit in a list.

Fundamental Forces Other Than Gravity by mllekurtz (TheKnittingJedi)/@mllekurtz (1/1 chapters, 40,676 words, E, no warnings)

- A shadowgast college au with great characterisation and weaving of the Nein throughout. This one has chronic pain Essek, and I love how it is handled. As a note, Essek is briefly one of Caleb's professors, however, there is little power imbalance between them.

the fire kept closest (burns most of all) by mousecookie/@ariadne-mouse (3/3 chapters, 21,822 words, M, warnings: MCD)

- The fic that created the vocaleb tag. Essek is scientist on a research team studying a volcano, for which a tragic accident occurred years prior. It's told in a series of present and past, and the slow build of the relationships throughout the fic are gorgeous. For those eyeing the MCD warning, know that it is also tagged with 'angst with a happy ending'.

I've been lost before (and I'm lost again, I guess) by toneofjoy/@fireryn (21/21 chapters, 165,080 words, E, no warnings)

- The boys are rock climbers in this one. I know, it sounds odd, but trust me and read this. It has incredible characterisation and conversations about sexuality and gender (I hold the cafe scene in my hands so gently), as well as some wonderful sexual tension that builds until it bursts. This fic also got me into recreational rock climbing and I owe the author for it big time. As a note, Essek is Caleb's coach in this fic and this is a plot point for the background of their developing relationship.

- This has the sentence "Have you been taking four legged showers with Essek Thelyss?” in the summary and it has lived rent-free in my head ever since. Modern-wth-magic university au where they are both students with some lovely build-up of sexual tension between them. Hot smut to go along with it.

- The corporate lawyer au of my dreams where they are friends with benefits and hiding it from the rest of the Nein. This has a delightful background of plot, along with ambiguous not!wizards hiding their true feelings behind an air of casualness, and snappy writing that keeps you reading.

Inside Edge, 3 Turn, and Closed Hold by MithrilWren/@mithrilwren (3/? works, 16,060 combined words, T/G/M respectively, no warnings)

- The shadowgast figure skating au I didn't know I needed until I read it. I've reread this one so many times and keep coming back to the characterisation and the way the story is slowly told across all three fics. There's a richness of the world behind what we see, and I adore coach!Beau in this one. Another with chronic pain Essek, and generally a careful understanding of the risks that go into the sport.

Labor of Love by OMGitsgreen (6/6 chapters, 43,331 words, M, warnings: CNTW)

- Bakery au. It's a classic, and it's done so well here. This is one of the earliest fics I remember reading, and it's a warm hug on a cold day that is great for when you're wanting something nice.

- A classical music au (there really needs to be more of these, please) where they are both piano students. The focus of this one is less the music world and more the character dynamics, and they are incredibly well done. The smut is hot, there is delightful miscommunication, and tense dynamics (ha) throughout.

- Professor au where they meet at a conference, Caleb a professor of modern history and Essek an expert in Latin. This fic has everything--wizards being nerds in every universe, first kisses, developing feelings, long distance relationship, emotional stakes, and dramatic declarations of love. I adore Mlle's writing (it really should not be a surprise at this point) as they have a way of capturing emotions and turning them into stunning pieces of prose. This one is also a love letter to Paris and Berlin, and please give it a read!

Aster Acanthus

Aster is V's first ex-partner. He was her highschool sweetheart

He is the same age as V, who is 26 years old

They didn't work out because schoolwork was always on the way and they made little to no time for their relationship

Because of that, they had a mutual agreement to break up and remain friends

Until today they are still in good terms :)

Aster is an artist, mostly focused on painting. He loves fantasy books and DnD as well

He also like to play both basketball and volleyball; he enjoys the thrill of sports

Aster is obviously not entirely human. Why? You'll find out soon...

Owen Thomas

Owen is V's ex-fiancé (surprise surprise)

His age is 30 years old, 4 years older than V

He is actually a really nice guy, but he was blinded by the greed to defend Joja Co. at all costs

Owen likes playing chess and debating, but he also has an interest in drawing (he unfortunately sucks lol)

Because Owen was blinded by his greed, he pressured his fiancée and the other lawyers to work in order to be able to protect Joja Co., since the law firm strongly favored it

When V turned down the engagement and left, he actually regretted his mistake (no way it's crazy but it's true)

He resigned from the law firm to leave the trance of pride and greed. Owen currently works as a Mathematician

He still loves V after the breakup, but he respects her decision (he still tries to get her back tho but Owen's got character development)

Only a few days after the 2024 presidential election, I am strangely feeling more at peace than I thought I would be. Not to say I don't think the US is f'cked in more ways than one for years to come, but rather that the doom in the horizon has left me looking around me and appreciating things I never did before. First of all, I don't think I have ever felt as much appreciation for Black people, especially Black women, as I do right now. Seeing the numbers for their turnout votes, seeing their work for Kamala and their presence at her rallies, and their passion and work for her was awe inspiring. I know the rest of the country messed up and let them down (my own Latino men & women included), and did not turn up as much as they should have, but dam, seeing Black people come together filled me with so much appreciation and love for them. Second of all I, selfishly, have a lot of newfound appreciation for California, the state in which I am lucky enough to be a part of. It ain't perfect, but it's home and I feel relatively safe in it, knowing that most people specially the ones in cities like the one I live in voted against the orange cheeto. I have never been the type to have "team spirit" for a sports team, or a state, or a school, or even a country to be honest. I thought those things were silly, but suddenly I find myself very proud and relieved to be a Californian. I'm also grateful for all the people who have kept on fighting/are preparing to fight. Immigration lawyers I have seen expressing their readiness to help should immigrants need it, people continuing to debate MAGA supporters and trying to make them join/at least understand us/our worries (I would never be able to do this as gracefully as many of them do), people who haven't stopped sharing Gaza newlines and trying to help them (AND acknowledged we live in a two party system, and should vote blue, never abstain or throw away a vote to third parties because we live in reality and not in fantasy land), and the many people in general just checking up on others, sharing helpful sites/numbers, and wishing others well. I hope this isn't too insensitive, seeing as I am aware many people are not lucky enough to be in places they feel safe in right now, but I do generally feel a sense of gratitude I did not expect to have after the rage and despair I felt at the results on Tuesday night. Anyways I'll end this long essay with my favorite LotR quote. A lot of you give me courage, and I'm grateful for that.

ML: Wish Fufillment

You know, at this point, my friend’s joke AU is looking really appealing right now … 

Basically, someone from the “real world” or someone from a really messed up future *cough* S5 *cough* manages to steal the Miraculous, and makes a wish. The entire show jumps back to Origins, and everything seems like it’s the same, except there’s a new person Quinn, someone who works at the school. Who are they? Where did they come from? What’s even her job? The whole show starts to proceed as it did, only during the first battle with Stoneheart, another Hero shows up - the Holder of the Raven Miraculous, Omen, able to see the future, and who’s main goals, besides stopping Hawk Moth, are to make Ladybug and Chat Noir have common sense and therapy.

The basic Idea is that Omen is someone who’s seen the show/is from the future, and who goes back in time to try and fix it. Now, due to the complicated nature of time travel, wishes, and “dramatic nonsense” she can’t actually just tell the Heroes that Hawk Moth is Gabriel, or reveal Ladybug and Chat’s identities, or any of the other really big pieces of information that would cut through at least half the idiocy, but she can be really, really, REALLY obvious.

They only real notes we have on Quin are:

- Full name is Quinn Conners 

- their costume looks like a fantasy plague doctor 

- they are somewhere between nineteen and twenty-five

- everything they wear has feather motifs. Everything.

- Kwami is called Sibill (spelling not final)

- weapon is a cane sword, sheath can be used as a baton

- first thing They did upon jumping to the past was steal Adrien, Felix and Kagami’s Amoks. Second thing was start an Audrey smear campaign

- their abilities are Clairvoyant- see the future, with sub-ability Consequence- see what is the most likely outcome of an action or choice, Skip- (this had a really long winded explanation, but to summarize, it’s basically really short range teleportation) and final, Shared Sight (name not final)- they can share their visions with others. the idea was that Omen shares her “visions” of the future, aka, “Canon”, and the characters reacting to the insane shit they’ll apparently do if they

Yeah So

I'm abandoning my Bingo Card and just... doing the AUs I feel like because I am not good at structure. XD

Anyway, here are some I'm trying to hit for sure - if you out there have a request, hit me up and I will try to work it into the lineup for sure (Also, in June if not sooner, regular WIP updates are a go).

Royalty AU - LarsDunn probably also some a/b/o action

Historical AU - just gotta decide on a time period and a WHO. It's so tempting to do a Jo/MackGatsby thing but I already wrote one devastating fic for that pairing I should try for something happy.

Regency AU - which yes is historical but come on we all know there's a difference. I almost want to try some Wyatt Johnston/???(Roope? Pavelski? Miro AND Roope? Ty? Logan?)

Western AU - gotta do some cowboy stuff I mean... Matthew is just. Right there. Cowboy hat in hand. Waiting.

The world's longest-serving death row prisoner thanked his supporters for helping him achieve "complete victory" after a Japanese court last week overturned his decades-old murder conviction.

After a long fight for justice led by his sister, 88-year-old Iwao Hakamada was on Thursday declared innocent of the quadruple murder that he spent 46 years on death row for.

"Finally I have won full and complete victory," the former boxer told a group of supporters on Sunday in Shizuoka, the region southwest of Tokyo where the ruling was issued.

"I couldn't wait any longer" to hear the not-guilty verdict, said a smiling Hakamada, sporting a green hat.

"Thank you very much," he added, accompanied by his 91-year-old sister Hideko at the meeting, which was shown on Japanese television.

Japan and the United States are the only major industrialised democracies to retain capital punishment, which has broad support among the Japanese public.

Hakamada is the fifth death row inmate granted a retrial in Japan's post-war history. All four previous cases also resulted in exonerations.

Decades of detention – mostly in solitary confinement with the threat of execution constantly looming over him – have taken a toll on Hakamada's mental health.

His lawyer and supporters have described him as "living in a world of fantasy".

Hakamada was released in 2014 pending the retrial but rarely speaks publicly.

Despite the retrial verdict, his acquittal isn't finalised – prosecutors reportedly have until October 10 to decide whether to appeal the Shizuoka District Court's ruling.

But they may face an uphill battle, as the court delivered a sweeping rebuke of the prosecution's arguments, saying that investigators fabricated key pieces of evidence.

Hakamada's initial confessions of having robbed and murdered his boss, the man's wife and their two teenage children were obtained through "inhumane" interrogations and mental and physical torture, making them invalid, the ruling said.

Blood-stained clothes used to incriminate him were also ruled a set-up. The court said investigators had put blood on them and planted them in a tank of miso fermented soybean paste to be discovered.

what is Mara’s family like?

OOH i’m excited about this one!

Mara’s an only child, though she has an abundance of cousins and aunts/uncles from both sides of her family.

Her father, Henry Ambrose is a muggleborn from New York and was a total quidditch stud back at Ilvermonry. He’s a big fan of the sport, and writes columns in the prophet and other wizarding papers and gives betting advice and predictions (much like modern fantasy football podcaster’s lolol).

Her mother Edith Ambrose, is a lawyer of wizarding law and comes from a minor pureblood family. Her family which has more acclaim and titles, is the surname which Henry takes. They’re acclaimed Occlumens and it’s a skill any Ambrose is expected to have some familiarity with. As such, the family all has their fair share of well kept secrets.

Amara has some tension with her mother, because when Edith took a new position to be a private lawyer for a very, very wealthy family within the Ministry she had to leave her life at Ilvermorny behind. Her mother has always been a bit more distant and pushes Amara to pursue her aurorship pretty intensely (mommy issues) and Amara really doesn’t confide in her at all. With her father she’s a bit more open, but she’s still overly guarded. She doesn’t have any quarrel with her parents but she just draws herself further from them, which only worsens after she becomes a werewolf - something they don’t even find out until she tells them in her mid twenties.

BUCKLE UP. This is really hard, because several do live in my mind ALL THE TIME. They are genius and I do love me a good lawyer au. Below are all RWRB but one, but it’s RWRB-infused, so.

It’s a vampire au and I don’t particularly like vampires necessarily but it is soooo good. Did I mention how good it is? 😋 A SLIGHTLY HYSTERICAL VAMPIRE FANTASY MOMENT. 🧛🏼‍♂️

RWRB fic: you may know my lovey @cheesecurdsgravyandfries as the writer of extremely hot, explicit RWRB & SCHITTS CREEK fics, but did you also know she is hilarious and sweet? I don’t completely know why, but I’ll never forget this adorable and clever stripper au told from Henry’s dog’s perspective. THE GOODEST BOY, HIS HENRY, AND THE OTHER GUY. 🥹 (Fun fact: this is the only G rated fic in my list.) 😏
