Like Jerry Dandridge in the first film, Regine Dandridge in Fright Night Part II transforms into a bat monster in some scenes. This was achieved as both a large puppet for closeup sequences, based on sculpts by Brian Wade, and a smaller stopmotion model (as seen in the third image) for distance shots that was animated by Justin Kohn.

Sundays were always your favourite thing about your parents being home. The smell of Italian sausage and carbonara had summoned you from your room to the living room, where your family sits spread out around the large room, with their dinner plates.
When you and Nicky were kids, your Mom would lose it if she caught you guys on the eggshell coloured living room carpet with anything darker than water. Ever since Henley and Patton were old enough to eat on their own, your dad has enforced mandatory family time, which was simply eating dinner while watching a movie together on Sundays.
To be fair, despite all the travelling, they tried really hard to be home every Sunday. You took your spot at the coffee table and picked up the only unoccupied plate.
“I’m feeling Marvel tonight.” Nicky commented, twirling his fork around in his pasta. “Or maybe Disney?”
“Turning Red!” “Inside out!” Your younger brothers both called out simultaneously. You bite the inside of your cheek to stifle a chuckle as your mom warily eyes the excited kids, or more accurately, the food balanced on their laps. She’s hopeless, you think freely.
“I’m thinking we should watch Euphoria. Bring some real world problems into this oasis.” you comment, earning a look from your Mom as well. Your older brother's idiot laugh doesn't go unnoticed.
Your Dad raises his wine glass to his lips. “I don't feel like having a stroke at 39. Peter Pan and Wendy it is.” Despite the child-like film, you all cheer as he hits play. Finally you start to dig into the meal your Mom, with the help of little Patton, made.
After you all finish eating, your dad pauses the film. You and Nicky carry the dishes to the dishwasher, load and start it, before making your way back to the living room. Your parents are curled up together and you take the spot on the other side of your dad, while he wraps an arm around you, the boys pile up on the mountain of blankets covering the floor.
As he plays the movie, you find your mind wandering to last night. To what you did in the hot tub at Tanneyhill. To Rafe fucking Cameron. Part of you felt guilty about messing with Roman’ s cousin and lying to your Mom, but the other part of you was burning. Burning to feel his hands on you again, burning to feel that intense pleasure over and over, and burning to know more. And then there was an even smaller part that wanted to know what such an intimate thing would feel like with Roman.
Even though you were still pissed at him for a number of reasons. You never made it back to Rafe’s room last night.

You giggle quietly as he opens the back door and carries you the few steps across the kitchen, to plop you down on the island. “Want some water or something?”
You swing your legs back and forth, feeling the effects of the alcohol you'd been consuming since you got here. “Yes, please.” You turn your head momentarily towards the doorway as you hear light footsteps upstairs. You brush it off, enjoying your inebriated break from everyone else in the world but the man who just made you cum on his lap.
Rafe grabs two waters and comes back to stand between your legs. He moved nervously, you noted. He looked at you, like really looked at you, as he handed you a water bottle. “You okay? How are you feeling after... well- after everything tonight?”

Your head whips over to see three shocked teens standing at the entrance of the kitchen with varying reactions. Rafe slowly lifts his head but doesnt look away from you. Your mouth opens and closes, floundering for words. You look between the three and Rafe as you push him away and jump off of the counter.
Nicky and Mia are slowly starting to snicker, but Roman is just staring at you with disbelieving eyes. The other girl is nowhere to be seen.
“Okay, now this. This makes more sense.” Nicky laughs, referring to this morning when your parents caught you and Roman in your bed, asleep.
“Looks like you have a date to midsummers now, Y/N.” Mia comments with a raised brow.
You remain frozen, aside from your bottom lip wobbling and you biting it in a second attempt to keep your tears at bay tonight. How many times can one girl be humiliated in a day? You don't even want to look back at Romans face.
Rafe eyes your wobbly lip and reaches for you, tugging your hand into his. “Hey, wanna go to sleep now?”
“What the fuck is this? What's happening right now?” You look up from your entwined hands, at Romans dubious tone.
“Roman-”
“Come outside, Y/N.” He walks past you both, through the doors you just entered from, ignoring Mia calling his name on the way out.
You inhale a deep shaky breath. Your brother casts Mia a clueless, questioning glance, which she ignores as she's focused on examining you and Rafe. “I should...” You trail off as Rafe squeezes your hand softly, meeting his eyes.
“Its okay. I'll talk to him later, yeah?” He places a quick peck to your head.
“Y/N, what's going on? I feel like I'm missing something.” Your brother comments quizzically.
Rafe moves to usher them out of the kitchen, “Later , man.” You hear him mutter quietly to Nicky, who meets your gaze one more time before turning back to the den area. Mia lingers a second as you squeeze and shake your hands out, nervously.
“He’s never gonna get it together. Not for you, princess. Listen to Rafe, maybe that way you can stop stepping on people's toes and you won't get hurt.” Mia says the words quietly, but her tone of voice makes it clear that it's a threat. She smiles at you and follows in the direction of two older boys, while you do your best to ignore her and choke down all of the unpleasant feelings building up and make your way to the patio doors.
When you open the door, you immediately see Roman sitting on the porch swing with his head back, looking up at the sky with his usual pout. He doesn't move, or say anything so you walk over to him and sit down. Anxiety wracks your body, as you prepare to inevitably have an uncomfortable encounter with the bipolar boy you called your best friend.
You risk a glance at him and are alarmed to see moisture pooling in his eyes, “Roman.” You whisper. “Hey, I-”
“What was that?” He sits up and turns to face you.”Just- what the hell was that?”
Your eyes widen a little at the intensity of his behaviour. He takes one of your hands in his and looks at you expectantly. “Was that just you guys being dumb, or was that -” He stutters for a second and then takes a deep breath. “Or was that something more?”
“I dont know.” The truth, you were too drunk to decipher your current feelings toward Rafe.
“What?” He scoffs. “I just caught you making out with my cousin,Y/N, and youre saying you don't know why?” He drops your hand, and faces forward, rubbing his eyes in frustration. Your eyes narrow at him. He was the one who'd failed to verbally recognize the fact that something definitely happened between you two. He's been avoiding it hardcore for the past month or so.
“No, Roman, I don't. Besides, you didn't catch me doing anything.” You snap. “The word ‘catch’ implies that i’m in trouble, and I can do whatever I fucking want, technically. Nobody else seems to give a damn about my feelings.” You run your hands through your messy hair. Maybe you shouldn't have thrown that in his face but at the moment, he was pissing drunk you off.
The lanky boy looks at you with ferocity lurking beneath his incredulous expression. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
“Use your fucking context clues.” You cuss back.
He just stares at you as you attempt to avoid looking him in the eyes. For a second it seems like he's going to finally acknowledge the kiss you shared, weeks ago. You see the recognition in his features for a fraction of a second before he’s up, pacing. “You're ridiculous. Seriously, if you think Rafe is gonna commit to you, or treat you well for that matter.”
Your mouth falls open in shock when you hear Rafes name come out of Romans mouth. He didn't just blatantly deflect the topic of conversation, did he? Bastard.
“Jesus, have you lost your mind? You know what kind of person he is, Y/N. I thought you were smarter than that.” He pinches the bridge of his nose as he spews his bullshit.
You take his dramatic, silent irritation as an invitation to add fuel to the fire, fed up with his week-long diversions from the underlying issue in your friendship. “Yeah, well, at least he didn't kiss me and then pretend it never happened.” You stand up and cross your arms defiantly.
Roman sighs a deep, shaky breath of air. “Y/N... Jesus. You really wanna do this, huh?” You look up, toeing the area of grass you'd just been staring at. His face, his eyes, his whole demeanour are pleading with you to stop. “It was my first kiss, Roman.”
He shuts his eyes for a second and you watch as his breathing becomes a little heavier. When he opens them, he starts toward your teary eyed figure but you step back and he stops in his tracks. “Y/N, i'm so sorry. I didn't know that.”
You nod, tears spilling over your waterline and cascading down your cheek into the ground. Where you wish you could disappear. You ignore the pain in your heart. You ignore the way this feels like a friendship ending argument. You ignore his own tears as they begin to meet yours in the soil.
“I know.” You sniffle, you didn't want to punish him. You don't even know what you want from this conversation. This isn't a good idea, you're drunk. You can't ignore the wave of anxiety that hits you, completely out of nowhere. “I just can't do this, Rome.”
You start to back up, but he follows you. “Do what?”
You squeeze your eyes shut and uncross your arms to instead wrap them around yourself. After a breath, you open them. Roman looks regretful. “Do what,Y/N?”
Be your friend, Is what you wanted to say.
“I can't see you right now.” Is what you say.
You turn around before he has time to see your face completely crumble. Panic, anxiety, and heart ache all fight for dominance over the sob working its way up your throat. You swallow it down and go find Nicky. You wouldn't be staying in Rafes room tonight.

By the end of the movie, your two youngest siblings are asleep. With Olivia having every Sunday off, you and Nicky fold up the blankets quietly talking about the film. Meanwhile, your Parents had each carried a sibling to bed to be tucked in. You grab a stack of blankets and carry them into the hall to put away in the linen closet. When you come back to the living room, your Mom is refilling your parents wine glasses, preparing to watch another movie with your Dad.
Nicky makes eye contact with you and widens his eyes slightly, insinuating something up.
“Ah, the gangs all here. Good. Sit.” Your Dad walks into the den and clasps his hands quietly.
You and Nicky both sit down on a loveseat near the front door and exchange a look. Your parents only do these little meetings to drop big news.
“So, nothing major but Wednesday night you're both expected to be home early for dinner. We're having guests over and there's a surprise involved.”
Nicky groans,”Mom, please. If you're pregnant again, I'm getting emancipated.”
You scoff out a laugh at your brother's blatant statement, before covering it up as a cough when you get a look from your Mom.
“Dominique.” Your father deadpans. “If your mom is pregnant, I’ll take you all and run. It isn't that.”
Your mom downs her wine. “This is why they don't have respect, Joseph.”
Your Dad gives her a warm grin and wraps her up under his arm. “Like I said, just be home early for dinner. Understood?”
You and Nicky ultimately agree without too much prying for details. After bidding your Parents goodnight, you both make your way upstairs. Your brother stops at your door as you enter your room and leans against the doorframe. “So....” He trails off and you roll your eyes as you search through your dresser for a large Tshirt, settling on one that Roman left here.
“Yes, Nicky?”
“What happened last night? I saw you mackin’ on Rafe but why was Roman so mad?” He walks further into your room and plops on your bed.
“Nicky!” You whine, batting at him with the t-shirt in your hands. “Get the hell off my blankets, you went outside in that outfit!”
It's Nicky's turn to roll his eyes at your rules, as he dramatically rolls off of your bed onto a pile of laundry on the floor, stretching out like a starfish. “Whatever. So what happened? I noticed that you stayed at the house all day. And kinda have been for a while.” He adds.
You let out a dramatic sigh of despair and slide down your dresser so that you're sitting facing your bed. “I’m so dumb, Nicky. I think I fucked up.”
He sits up on his elbows, facing you. “Wait, what? What's the matter?”
You contemplate telling him everything for a moment. What's the worst that could happen? Then you think back to the last time you asked yourself that question, and any ideas of total honesty dissipate. “I don't know...” and then, you remember. “What did you mean when you said that me and Rafe made sense?”
He sits up all the way and musses his hair. “I don't know, I was drunk, Y/N. I guess I always just assumed you’d rebel against Mom and Dad. Rafe would make sense for that. More sense than your childhood best friend.”
"Me and Rafe are friends, too.” You point out, although you know it's not the same.
“Not like you and Roman.”
You contemplate this quietly. Nicky comes over to where you're sitting and plants himself beside you.
“Listen sis, I don't know what the hell is going on, but you can tell me if I need to kick someone's ass. I won't ask questions.”
You shake your head sadly. ”It's not like that. I just did a dumb thing and now I have to live with it.”
Your older brother stands up and ruffles your hair. “Well, that's nothing new, is it? Goodnight Y/N/N.”
“Goodnight, Nicky.”
He shuts your door and you change into your shirt before turning on your fan and hopping in bed.
After about 15 minutes of staring at your ceiling, trying to make sense of your feelings, you were over it. You were agonising over whether or not to check your phone for a text from Roman and beating yourself up over what happened with Rafe. You flip over and grab the TV remote. Deciding to listen to something scary, you settle on a rerun of the Paranormal Activity films and turn back over, letting the TV lull you to sleep.
Not 10 minutes later, when you're almost out like a light, does your phone begin ringing quietly on the nightstand. You register the noise and flail under the covers, frustratedly. You snatch your phone up and accept the call, barely registering the name on the screen.
“What?” You almost growl.
“Wow, hello to you too, beautiful.” Rafe’s deep voice rings through the speaker.
“Do not disturb means do not disturb, not call twice, Rafe.” You can't help your tone, your anxiety keeps you up most nights, and you were so close to ending the night on a good note, moments before.
“I'm sorry, I’d take any option that guaranteed your attention.” He laughs.” Did I wake you up?”
“Yes actually.” You sigh, readjusting your covers from the flail. “Did you need something?” “Can I come over?”
“Seriously, Rafe? Its-” You pull your phone away from your cheek and look at the time, faltering.
“Only 9 P.M.? Exactly.” You can hear his smug face over the phone. “So?”
You feel queasy at the thought of seeing Rafe, despite being so explicit with him the night before. It felt like a betrayal to Roman in a way because you two hadn’t spoken since the fight last night where he expressed his disapproval of Rafe and you together. Although a small part of you doesn't care about his opinion, after his blatant disregard for your feelings.
“I don't think that's a great idea, Rafe, my parents are awake downstairs.” You try.
He’s quiet for a second, and then there's an incoming facetime from him. You answer the call and you see Rafe sitting up, shirtless, against his headboard. He has to fight his smile, seeing you laying on your side, hair cascading around your shoulder like a waterfall of curls.
“Is it because of last night?”
You mentally smack yourself for answering a call where he can see your face. Rafe always knew when you were lying. When you guys were 12 and 13, you covered for him when he broke one of Wards Golf awards and he figured out that you had a tell. You couldn't make eye contact.

“The real reason you don't want to see me.” He says in a bored tone. “Is it because of Roman?”
“No.” You roll your eyes.

“Fine, yeah. It Is, Rafe.” Pulling the covers up to your chin. “He’s one of my best friends, and you're his cousin. It feels weird that things are like this. I can't stop thinking about that stupid fight.”
You hear shuffling on Rafe’s end and then the sound of keys.
“What are you doing?”
“I'm comin over.” You start to protest but he cuts you off. “I'm gonna take your mind off of it.”
He ends the call and you're left staring at the screen dumbfounded. Now that he’s ended the call, you see a whole slew of texts and missed calls from John B and Kie, and even JJ asking you to join in on the boat day they had today. Nothing from Roman. He was usually always the first to cave after an argument, seeking you out almost every time. The lack of contact, admittedly worried you.
You sigh, sitting up in bed now. There are so many questions swirling around in your head. What was Roman thinking about? Was he still angry with you? What was Rafe thinking about? Was he going to try something? How were you supposed to hide yet another boy in your room without invoking your Mothers anger? More importantly though, how did you look right now?
You spring up and run to the ensuite bathroom. You clutch your chest and take a step back just as he pushes off of the branch and pulls himself through the window. “Why didn't you just climb onto the balcony, you could've fallen.” You comment as he steadies himself.
Rafe examines your face, stepping closer. “Your Mom had all the trees near it cut down, remember?”
You’d forgotten about that. As soon as you turned 15 your Mom had to escape-proof your room because of an incident involving a party, a week prior. Which included cutting down the trees near your balcony and removing the garden trellis that crept up right beside it, leaving only an old oak tree beside the window that was across from your bedroom door. “Oh, right.”
You back up and sit on the edge of your bed, patting the spot next to you. Rafe pushes his hair off of his forehead as he takes a seat. The sound of the movie playing is all that can be heard as you both quietly observe each other. He looks really good in his simple blue tee and basketball shorts, and you can't help the natural, girly giddiness you feel.
“You look really pretty.” he starts.
Letting out a small laugh, “Shut up. I look like I was about to go to sleep. You look good though.” You go to smack his chest playfully, but he catches your hand.

Your heart flutters a little at his words, but you quell it and withdraw your hand slowly. One thing Rafe and his cousin had in common was their notoriety as two of the island's biggest playboys. “Don't say things you don't mean, Rafe.”
Rafe smiles at you knowingly, yet you don't know why. “Remember when we were like...” He thinks about it. “I was 9 and you were 8. We were playing hide and seek with a bunch of other kids at Olivia’s garden party?” He questions.
You remember. You’d gotten locked into the old outdoor cellar, while trying to use it as a hiding spot. You'd been locked in for what felt like hours as you plotted a way out, the music and ongoing party drowning out your cries. As a kid you remember thinking you’d be down there forever, You nod, telling Rafe to go on.

He raises his head slightly, back to you, but doesn't move otherwise. “Jellybean?”
“Yeah... it's me, what's going on Roman?” You put a hand on his shoulder, sitting down beside him. “What are you doing sitting out here? It's almost Midnight.”
Roman looks at you in a mixture of melancholy and clear intoxication. His lips twitch into a slight frown, as if he is going to cry, but only momentarily, before he takes a shot and hands you the bottle. You take it, gratefully. “I needed to see you, talk to you.” He’s slurring, dangerously. ”I really fucking hate what happened yesterday.”
Before you reply you take a shot too, and sigh. “Which part?”
“All of it. I really fucking hated it all, guppy.” He turns towards you, his demeanor slightly more defeated than a minute ago. He was naturally a manic person, but when he was drunk, he went from tough guy to busting out every pet name in the book in hopes of being babied. “Seeing Rafe touch you, seeing you like it.... us fighting.”
Your eyes widen, slightly. “What does that even mean, Roman?
Roman stares at you with his sad green eyes, dejectedly. “I want to fix it. I fucked up and I want to fix it.” He taps the bottle in your hand and you hold eye contact as you take another drink, passing it to him afterwards, him doing the same.
“It's not entirely your fault, Roman.” You let your eyes fall to the sand between you. You hated lying, but you didn't know what was going on in his head and telling him about Rafe being in your room, less than 3 hours ago, would possibly just serve to make him more upset. “I shouldn't have kissed Rafe.” You omit the part about you grinding and cumming on his dick, for Romans sake.
He grabs your hand in his and pulls you to scoot closer, you do. “Ya’guys only kissed cuz’ I never talked to you about us.” he says. “M’ sorry if I hurt you baby. I love you, Y/N. I really fucking love you.” He cups your face, dragging his thumbs across your cheeks.

Roman pauses as he hiccups, and gathers his words. "She would text her cryptic shit from my phone and then delete it so that it seemed like her angry texts were random, she’d tell her that she wasn't good enough for me and me the same. Allie told me she didnt want to see me anymore after my mom told her mom that I’d been having sex with multiple girls at a time.” He chuckles. “I was still a fucking virgin. She just wanted to ruin what I had. I realized she’s only going to let me be with someone that she chooses for me.”
“Roman...” Your mouth opens and shuts while you process your next words. “Im so fucking sorry, that I didnt know about that. That's literally insane.”

“Y/N?” Roman bites his lip and a slight frown forms between his brows as he glances down at your lips. “Can I kiss you?”
In lieu of answering, you tangle your hands in his hair and pull him to you, desperately connecting your lips. You caught Roman off guard but he quickly grabs ahold of your waist in his free hand, managing to hastily pull you onto his lap.

“Of course, it is. I know I've been so wrapped up in my own head, trying to keep everything...normal, but I don't want to do that anymore.” He pulls you close again and rests his forehead against yours. “I want this, baby. I want you.”
No, no, no. Roman, dont. Not right now. The guilt is going to crush you. You look down. “Will you be my girlfriend?” His hopeful eyes await yours.
You're quiet for a beat too long before you slowly look back into his expectant face. “I can't, Roman... my Dad. You know how he is.” It's bullshit, but he doesn't know it. Yeah your dad would have an aneurysm but you didn't care in the slightest. You had to make sure that Rafe wouldn't say anything about what you guys did, and break things off with him first, before you made an even bigger mess. Roman was wasted, he might not even remember this in the morning.
Romans face falls a bit at your words. He just promised to endure his mothers psychopathy for you and you wouldn't even return the favour? You hate the look that flashes across his face and hurry to reassure him. “I'll talk to him, okay? After dinner on Wednesday.”
He nods somberly, “Yeah, okay. If you want to.”
You grab his face and plant a kiss on his pouty lips. “I do, Romeo, don't worry. And I promise, I will.”
He laughs at that, loving the nickname. You made many mistakes, but you wouldn't let this be one of them. The feelings that the boy under you made you feel, compared to absolutely nothing else. At least that's what you keep telling yourself.

Movies I watched in March 2024

Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** Absolute bobbins of a script is still beautiful to look at, very gay and of course mainly a vehicle for Prince's music. Under the Cherry Moon was the follow up to Purple Rain. It was a box office flop, a critical failure that earned Razzie nominations, but is a worth another look. Prince and Jerome Beton are sex workers with a rich female clientele on the French Riviera, the kind of career that only exists in movies. Kristin Scott Thomas makes her film debut as the debutante who comes between the friends and threatens to part them. Prince's death scene, harkens back to Camille with Prince playing Garbo. Like Garbo, Prince was happy to exploit his own androgyny and like Garbo, he was doomed to only explore that in a way that could be squeezed into heteronormative films.
I'm not There: (2007)*** A fascinating look at Bob Dylan, dividing him into six personae played by six different actors. Haynes uses different film styles, the Cate Blanchett mid Sixties Dylan of Bringing it All Back Home and Blonde on Blonde is matched in style with the black and white cinematography of D.A. Pennebaker's Don't Look Back. It also has elements of the Italian Surrealists like Felinni or Antonioni with a scoch of A Hard Day's Night. The soundtrack is particularly good, avoiding for the most part, the licensing pitfalls that plagued Haynes' Bowie biopic, Velvet Goldmine. Some of the most effective moments of I'm Not There, pair landscape shots with Dylan's music. Given the catalogue and the array of talent, Haynes has gathered, one perhaps expects a bit more , but then that has always been Dylan's nature, he's mysterious and aloof, leaving us wanting more.
Jingle All the Way (1996)* We watched this Christmas movie in March because we recently learned that part of it was filmed at my son's elementary school. It had Jake Lloyd somehow being more annoying than he was in the Phantom Menace as a bonus. Phil Hartman got dragged into this unfunny mess as well.
Three Graves to Cairo (1943)** Tense war time drama about a British officer who gets trapped behind the lines and ends up hiding out in a hotel working as a waiter for Field Marshall Rommel. Billy Wilder ratchets up the tension, his script giving all the best lines to Rommel, played by Erich Von Stroheim who really owns the film though Anne Baxter and Franchot Tone nominally "star."
Hitchcock (2012)** Hichcock's struggle to make Pyscho dramatized with fantasies where he hangs out with Ed Gein, while Alma Hitchcock gets involved in a Hitchcockian romance with a hack writer. Scarlett Johannson plays an almost deliberately obtuse Janet Leigh and James Darcy captures pre-Psycho Tony Perkins. It's a bit silly but I'll never turn down Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins in anything. This has a slight, arch feel to it, like many of Hitchcock's pictures, but lurking underneath are the ordinary hates and passions of a man who fears being left behind, at the height of his career. For his long-suffering wife's part, she too feels she's being replaced by the young actresses that Hitchcock is obsessed with at the moment. The conclusion is sweet enough for the Hayes office: husband and wife rediscover the magic of their working relationship, which was always the rock upon which their relationship was built.
The Silent Partner (1978)** With Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York in the cast, this should have been better. Decent heist plot that devolves into slasher film . Christopher Plummer takes on the dubious mantels of playing a villain in a piss-poor American action film and a cross-dressing murderer.
Possession (2002)** A rather thin adaptation of a great novel, A.S. Byatt's story of two modern academics who disover a previous hidden romance between two Victorian poets. The film lacks the poetry of the novel, which I think is necessary for the story to have its full impact, but the film is full of plenty of jabs at academia as well as burning passions. Gweneth Paltrow and Aaron Ecklund play the young couple, while Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle play the poet/lovers. Tom Hollander has a small but memorable part as does Toby Stephens.
Oppenheimer (2023)** My least favorite half of Barbenheimer still damn good and the physics nerd in me reveled in seeing my dead physicist boyfriends on screen. There are better films about Oppenheimer's life (BBC did a mini series starring Sam Waterston and it's on youtube) but something about the dreamy quality of Nolan's film captures that quantum mystery kinda vibe and put it in a blockbuster package. Cool.
Oscar Wilde (1960)** Preceded the landmark film Crisis by one year, without the world shaking honesty that film managed, around the topic of homosexuality and the law. Both films hinged on blackmail of a gay man but Oscar Wilde is careful to skirt around explicit mentions of sexuality, using tricks like showing the dictionary definition of "sodomy" briefly on camera. More was needed and more was achieved a year later. Ralph Richardson contributes to the courtroom scenes admirably and Morley is a terrific Wilde, who would rather make point for style than save himself from prison.
Turning Point: The Cold War and the Bomb (2024)** Fascinating background to our current situation, most of which is terrifying and now I'm worrying about the bomb again. I took off a star for the sheer number neo-con/Reaganite talking heads in this...
Anselm (2023)*** Wim Wenders stirring mostly visual documentary about Anselm Kiefer, a German artist who has explored his childhood memories of post war Germany in a frank and intimidatingly in your face way, on a massive scale combining sculpture, painting and physical spaces, many of which he has engineered himself. As a middle aged person who feels estranged and terrified to look more deeply into her own childhood, Anselm was something to sit with for two hours.
24 Hour Party People (2002)** Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson, the Manchester TV personality and club owner who helped launch the careers of Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays. Coogan has a tendency to make all his characters Alan Partridge and this is no exception, but it kind of works? It did more to get me to listen to Joy Division that numerous goth roommates ever could...
Two of Us (1999)*** I can't stop watching this made for VH-1 fanfiction of a movie starring Jared Harris and Aidan Quinn as John Lennon and Paul McCartney, dramatizing a probably apocryphal tale that John and Paul met up in NYC in the 70s when Paul was playing Madison Square Garden. Pure fluff and nonsense. I need it like air.
Remains of the Day (1993)*** Revisiting this old favorite and finding that it's kind of pacey and funny for a Merchant Ivory pic. The movie that made me love Tony Hopkins as an actor, his Stevens is really such a fascinating, ostensibly tragic character and yet there is a weird kind of triumph to living one's life so completely to a schedule and a code, and yet never being to eliminate desire and feeling.
Doubt (2008)*** This is the second Philip Seymour Hoffman movie I've watched in the last few months that has left me utterly haunted. Like The Master, Hoffman creates a villain who charms the audience at the same time you know that he's probably done unforgivable things and is only at the start of a long career of doing unforgivable things. Meryl Streep gives a heavy handed performance (Streep never met a colloquial accent that she didn't wear like a Groucho Marx nose) that certainly gets the point across that unpleasant people usually aren't the bad guys you want them to be. Amy Adams plays a naive young nun who, like the audience, is left wondering what to believe.
Dune (1984)*** Unapologetic Lynch Dune lover here. I love the cheesy acting, the wild tonal shifts, and the attempts to put this sprawling multibook epic in the Star Wars shaped box that the studio wanted him to use. My favorite scene has become Lynch's cameo, he seems so happy just pretending to be a spice miner, in his little spice mining suit in his little unconvincing space ship. I love him and this whole stupid mess. Sorry Frank Herbert.
Dune Part II (2024)*** My prediction is that Villeneuve's probable trilogy will--like so many franchises--peak in the second film. The first part was a slow-moving visual feast, that only hinted at the potential of this cast. Things actually start moving in the plot and Chalamet's Paul does his best to cope. Unlike MacLachlan's avuncular Atreides, who takes being a Messiah as just being another Tuesday of being the Universe's Most Gifted Child, he actually seems conflicted. Zendaya continues to utterly dominate every time she's on screen. Can Channi be the focus of the movie? Please?

What are some of your favorite bad fantasy movies that you’d recommend? The world wants to know
Sure thing! Some of these I found or are also shown on MST3K or Rifftrax (I'll put asterisks on those), some through my own strange film journey.
Hawk the Slayer*: A very D&D movie, if your DM included silly string as a weapon alongside scenes that were supposed to be dramatic. The lengths you had to go to before The Princess Bride and Lord of the Rings for a D&D movie!
The Sword and the Sorcerer*: Sleazier than the above, containing the iconic and nonsensical Triple Sword, one of the dumbest weapons in all of fantasy fiction!
Sword of the Valiant: This "adaptation" of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is on here for one reason and one reason only- Sean Connery as the Green Knight with holes cut in his armor to show his nipples. Just as the Pearl Poet intended!
The Magic Sword*: Both Rifftrax and MST3K have done this, because it has Basil Rathbone and Bert I. Gordon's terrible special effects and a hero who has to keep being saved by his mom. Watch either the original or the Rifftrax version for the whole company of knights with different bad accents!
Prince Valiant (1954): Another iconic Gawain movie, where Texan-accented film noir actor Sterling Hayden plays an incredibly loveable Gawain in a relationship with his squire so homoerotic that my husband and friend and I kept pausing the movie to look at each other and go "We're all seeing the same thing, right?" It's more cheesy than outright bad, as another bonus.
Cave Dwellers*: You could start with the supposed first movie in the series, Ator the Fighting Eagle, but the character is completely retooled into a barbarian engineer genius between movies and the lore is literally made up from one scene to the next, so just start with Cave Dwellers.
Deathstalker: On the one hand, this movie makes me fall over laughing. On the other hand, it is about as gross and sleazy as you can get outside of actual horror or porn. The sequels, Deathstalker II and Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell* are more accessible, but for better or for worse, not as jaw-droppingly awful.

Army of Darkness is full of memorable scenes and big laughs. It may not be as ghoulishly funny as Evil Dead 2 but look at the film’s title. This isn’t Evil Dead 3; it’s its own thing. Remarkably well-directed and sturdy for a low-budget production, this is a movie you'll come back to.
Following the events of Evil Dead 2, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) has been sent to the Middle Ages. After an initial scuffle with the locals, our hero embarks on a quest for the magical Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. With it, he can return to his own time, but Ash isn’t the only one after the book.
The plot of Army of Darkness is episodic. On his quest to find the Book of the Dead, Ash has to fight miniature versions of himself, gets split into two, must save his love interest from the Deadites, trains villagers to fight against the incoming Army of Darkness, and more. The character does not grow or learn anything. He makes his way through these obstacles, all of which are wildly creative and a riot to see, but most of them could be swapped around without affecting the plot. The film film is not deep but it is fully aware of this. That may or may not be a flaw. It depends on your preferences.
For the most part, the special effects look terrific considering the $11 million budget. There is a wide assortment of creatures in this dark fantasy horror comedy even before we get to the titular army. There are a few instances where the budget does show, however. Mostly, a shot where tiny creatures attack Ash Gulliver’s Travels’s style and some close-ups of the undead. This is the kind of movie that plays better on VHS or DVD than Blu-ray, let me put it that way.
The wildly different tone of this picture will initially be off-putting for fans of Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 but if you give this film a chance, it will win you over. Bruce Campbell has excellent comedic timing and it’s hard to imagine anyone else pulling off some of the wild sight-gags director Sam Raimi (who directed, wrote and edited the film) dreamt up. I don’t know if anyone else would’ve even agreed to perform this part. It’s so bizarre. Army of Darkness" has a unique take on A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, with Ash being the ultimate reluctant hero. The score is terrific. The events keep you guessing and wondering what's coming next, even when you sort of know. Above all else, the picture is just fun to watch.
Army of Darkness is not as good as The Evil Dead or Evil Dead II and it's significantly different from them tone- and story-wise. I'm still calling this one of the best "trilogies" (I put that in quotations because there is a sequel series and films that follow, but they only came in fairly recently). Unlike other series whose third installment you could only imagine people revisiting because they’re making their way through the whole franchise (cough Blade cough), Army of Darkness will have a special place in many fans' hearts. And from the summary of its plot, this is how the film ends:
In the end, [an angel] has June [...] prove that she genuinely loves Peter by telling her that the only way to save his life is to take his place, whereupon she steps onto the stairway to the Other World without hesitation and is carried away, leaving Peter behind. The stairway comes to an abrupt halt and June rushes back to Peter's open arms. As [the angel] triumphantly explains, "… nothing is stronger than the law in the universe, but on Earth, nothing is stronger than love."
Assuming the fan theory that Crowley used to be the Supreme Archangel, or at least an Archangel, is correct—and given all the hints of it throughout season 2, it certainly seems to be—then Aziraphale has quite literally taken Crowley's place. We just have to wait until season 3 for the rest!

A Matter of Life and Death is a 1946 British fantasy-romance film set in England during World War II. On 2 May 1945, Squadron Leader Peter Carter, an RAF pilot, is flying a badly damaged and burning Lancaster bomber over the English Channel, after a mission over Germany. Carter is expecting to die, after ordering his crew to bail out, without revealing to them that his own parachute has been destroyed. The only radio operator receiving him is June, at a USAAF base on the coast of England. For a few minutes Carter converses with June, before jumping from the Lancaster without a parachute.
Peter should have died at that point, but the guide sent to escort him to the Other World misses him in the thick fog over the English Channel. Peter wakes up on a beach near June's base; he meets June cycling back to her quarters after her night shift and they fall in love. The guide stops time to explain the situation, urging Peter to accept his death and accompany him to the Other World, but Peter demands, and is granted, an appeal.
The defense counsel argues that, during his additional time on Earth, Peter has fallen in love and now has an earthly commitment that should take precedence over the afterlife's claim on him. In the end, the counsel has June take the stand and prove that she genuinely loves Peter by taking his place, whereupon she steps onto the stairway to the Other World without hesitation. The stairway, however, comes to an abrupt halt and June rushes back to Peter's open arms. As the counsel triumphantly explains, "... nothing is stronger than the law in the universe, but on Earth, nothing is stronger than love."

aso is on here because it's space opera and watch the gunner channel be bozos in live action? hilarious. i've seen some animatics that are incredible though, so this season could go either way.
acofaf is here because i'd want to see the costume department go ham. bridgerton but fairies? guess what. diverse actors, tons of practical effects, a little raunchy, a little heartbreak, what more could you want.

as stated earlier fantasy high is a running animated series with two current spinoffs: one movie (pol) and one miniseries (t7). combination high school slice of life with action/adventure.
acoc is a game of thrones style series--animated to keep the comedy, with trw functioning as a hotd style prequel series. the calorum seasons could easily read live action though, just like aso could be animated.
neverafter is animated, but the style changes throughout the season. maybe they start live action and become animated when they wake up in the new timeline. no change in world physics, no acknowledgement, just a seamless switch. ooh maybe they shift to traditional animation when they're in the lines between.
video games:
shriek week
coffin run
these come down to gm style and also system. shriek week is already a cryptid dating sim. coffin run is crunchy, a little bit horror with a lot of adventuring options to explore.

Prosthetics designed for Julie Carmen as Regine Dandridge in Fright Night Part II (1988), sculpted by Brian Wade and Bart Mixon as part of Gene Warren Jr.'s Fantasy II Film Effects. The first image is an earlier sculpt by Wade that didn't make it into the film.
The mold casting for the prosthetics, performed by Wade and Mixon, proved to be a stressful experience for Carmen, inducing claustrophobia and causing her to have panic attacks. She jokingly claimed to Fangoria Magazine that she would add a clause to her contract forbidding her to ever have latex applied to her body again.

Sci-Fi Saturday: Invisible Agent

Rationale for Inclusion: 
As I wrote in my post about Dr. Cyclops (Dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1940, USA) a few weeks back, most of the purer works of science fiction in the 1940s were being produced in serial or short format, whilst features were mostly horror hybrids, and frequently linked to past Universal Horror movies or adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. As a result, this post will be the last one on sci-fi films of the 1940s, and also will finally feature one of the Universal Monster sequels.
While the sequels to Frankenstein (Dir. James Whale, 1931, USA) leaned more into fantasy and horror, the sequels to The Invisible Man (Dir. James Whale, 1933, USA) showed more cross-genre compatibility. The first sequel, The Invisible Man Returns (Dir. Joe May, 1940, USA), sticks to the horror, sci-fi roots of the original with the added thriller narrative of a wrongly convicted man trying to prove his innocence of a murder. The second sequel, The Invisible Woman (Dir. A. Edward Sutherland, 1940, USA), goes the comedy route, and narratively has little to do with the prior films apart from its title. The third sequel, Invisible Agent (Dir. Edwin L. Marin, 1942, USA), puts the invisibility serum of the original film towards the war effort in a sci-fi espionage film. Two more sequels followed, The Invisible Man's Revenge (Dir. Ford Beebe, 1944, USA) and Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (Dir. Charles Lamont, 1951, USA), which were a return to horror and comedy, respectively.
For all its cultural dominance during the 1940s, World War II rarely shows up directly in feature length sci-fi films of the era. Part of that has to do with the United States' late entry into the war, but also other mediums, like comic books and radio, being the preferred showcase of spectacular worlds and technology. The novelty of its espionage plot is why, out of all the Universal Monster sequels that also fit in the sci-fi genre, I thought Invisible Agent warranted inclusion on this survey.
Reactions:
Continuity within the Invisible Man series is frequently casual, since unlike the Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman films, no characters exist in multiple films. Invisible Agent does narratively connect back to The Invisible Man by having protagonist Frank Griffin Jr., alias Frank Raymond, (Jon Hall) be presented as the grandson of the first film's Dr. Jack Griffin, who possesses a copy of the recipe for the invisibility serum. Never mind the fact that in The Invisible Man Jack Griffin was not married, nor shown to be a philanderer, and deliberately destroyed the only existing copy of the invisibility serum formula; the filmmakers probably figured their audience would not have seen the 1933 film, or at least not recently enough for the change in continuity to be an issue.
Retroactive continuities, or as we say today "retcons", have been fixtures of popular media since popular mass media first took shape at the end of the nineteenth century, anyway. So it is safe to presume that audiences in 1942 were apt to just accept the changes with minimal reaction or thought. Increased access to past works in the post-modern, digital age have prompted a more negative response from devoted fan communities when continuity is deviated from. As a fan spoiled by access who typically watches The Invisible Man annually, I definitely responded to the retcon in Invisible Agent by thinking that it made no sense based on what was present in the original film.
However, retconning aside, having the grandson of Dr. Jack Griffin use the invisibility serum to help the United States government and Allies, instead of giving it to the Axis Powers, or maniacally sewing anarchy as a free agent with it, was the story that the era demanded. The film unfolds as a competent sci-fi, spy thriller with gimmicky yet clever effects moments to convey invisibility that were the true hallmark of the series.
The whole narrative is itself a work of Allied propaganda, but it only goes explicitly heavy handed during a speech of Griffin's whilst trying to get information out of the incarcerated Gestapo Standartenführer Karl Heiser (J. Edward Bromberg).
Given the history of German emigrants playing Nazis in American films during the war, it may be a surprise to modern audiences to discover German emigrant Peter Lorre in yellowface playing a Japanese agent, Baron Ikito. Lorre, who worked his way from France to England to America to get away from the Nazi regime as quickly as possible, had previously played Japanese detective Mr. Moto in eight films between 1937 and 1939, so audiences were accustomed to seeing him play Japanese characters. Between his experience playing Moto, and Lorre's skill as an actor, his performance of Baron Ikito is fairly neutral for a yellowface performance, albeit problematic by its very nature. 
Invisible Agent is an interesting cultural artifact. Its narrative is built on a respectable sci-fi concept and it places middle of the pack when it comes to Universal Monster sequels.
World War II and Nazis factor more deeply in later retro and period piece science fiction works than during the actual 1940s. It is somewhat disappointing, but if anything is an incentive to look more into the print offerings of the era.
Next week we move onto the 1950s: flying saucers, aliens, and all manner of atomic terrors.

Netflix:
The Gray Man (2022) - Rated R. A CIA spook known only as Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) is assigned to kill a former Sierra member... only to find himself at the center of a conspiracy. At the same time, he becomes the target of a sadistic ex-CIA mercenary (Chris Evans).
Genre: Action/thriller. There are likely to be more Gray Man films coming in the near future, along with a television show based on Chris Evans's chillingly villainous Lloyd Hansen.
Rocky (1976) - Rated PG. Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is a washed-up boxer who works as a Mafia enforcer. He gets an unexpected chance at glory when boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) wants to fight an unknown.
Genre: Drama/sports. If you don't know the story behind Rocky, it's almost as good as the movie itself!
The Imitation Game (2014) - Rated PG-13. The story of Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), particularly his work in World War II to decode Enigma transmissions intercepted from the Axis powers.
Genre: Biographical drama. The Imitation Game is the story of Alan Turing's life, both triumphs and tragedies. It contains themes of hidden homosexuality, cruel and unusual punishment, and suicide.
Max:
Triple Frontier (2019) - Rated R. An ex-Delta Force soldier (Oscar Isaac) asks his prior teammates to come on one final mission, with the promise of an incredible payout.
Genre: Action/adventure. Triple Frontier is a typical action/adventure movie with some interesting effects and a cast (Isaac, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund) that elevates it a little further.
Parasite (2019) - Rated R. The Kim family struggles to make ends meet until Ki-woo is referred to tutor a rich teenager. Through manipulation and daring, the entire Kim family ends up employed by the unknowing Park family.
Genre: Black comedy/thriller. Full of fascinating dynamics and an interesting look at divisions of wealth in South Korea, it's clear to see why Parasite gained such acclaim.
Casablanca (1942) - Rated PG. Casablanca, Morocco is a popular departure point for people fleeing the Nazis. Jaded nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) must decide whether to risk his life to help his ex (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband escape.
Genre: Romance/drama. Casablanca is considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made. If you haven't seen it, try it. Keep an eye out for dry humor and the way the director uses shadows to keep the black and white film interesting!
Ex Machina (2014) - Rated R. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins an office lottery to help the company's CEO (Oscar Isaac) test his new AI (Alicia Vikander).
Genre: Sci-fi/psychological thriller. With incredible effects, a labyrinthine plot, and uncomfortable questions about what makes us human, it's easy to see why Ex Machina is considered one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade.
Hulu:
The Last Action Hero (1993) - Rated PG-13. Film fan Danny (Austin O'Brien) goes to see the latest in his favorite franchise, he finds himself pulled into the movie, working alongside his hero Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzeneggar).
Genre: Fantasy/action/satire. Think of every action trope you associate with Arnold Schwarzeneggar, mix it with a vibe like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and add some self-aware humor, and you have The Last Action Hero. This is not a popular film among internet aggregators, but I enjoyed it!
Palm Springs (2020) - Rated R. Reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) is fascinated by a wedding guest (Andy Samberg) who seems to know more than he should. When she follows him from the wedding, she finds herself stuck with him in a time loop.
Genre: Sci-fi/rom-com. Though Palm Springs has some real COVID-19 quarantine vibes, the plot keeps it from feeling like a time capsule.
Whiplash (2014) - Rated R. Talented drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is identified for an elite jazz band by sadistic and manipulative conductor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).
Genre: Drama. Though Whiplash is not a horror movie, it is partially produced by Blumhouse Productions. That darkness really shines through in Fletcher's abusive behavior.
Role Models (2008) - Rated R. After a disastrous, drunken day at work, Danny (Paul Rudd) is assigned community service in a big brother program. He is assigned to awkward teenager Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and accompanies him during his favorite activity: LARPing.
Genre: Humor. Though Role Models can get a little close to cringe comedy, it's got enough genuine humor and heart to get away with it... and even be a little sweet.
Amazon Prime:
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Rated R. An author tells the story of Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the owner of a once-grand hotel in the former country of Zubrowka, using several frame stories.
Genre: Drama. Wes Anderson's films have a very characteristic style. The Grand Budapest Hotel features stunning sets, a ton of cameos, and enough quirky humor to keep you entertained!
Hot Fuzz (2007) - Rated R. London police officer Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is reassigned to the small town of Sandford. He's frustrated by the small town at first, but a string of murders make him suspect something more is going on...
Genre: Action/comedy. Hot Fuzz is the second installment of the Cornetto Trilogy. It is a satirical look at the cop film genre - and thus has a lot of overdramatic violence - but it manages to stand on its own at the same time.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - Rated PG. Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are two teens more interested in their band than their studies. But if they don't pass their history final, Ted will be sent to military school. A mysterious stranger gives them a time machine, sending them off to write the best essay of all time!
Genre: Comedy/sci-fi. If you're used to Keanu Reeves as a broody hero, you're in for a shock and a treat to see him at his surfer/stoner/slacker best!
The Iron Giant (1999) - Rated PG. In 1957, 9-year-old Hogarth Hughes finds a 50-foot tall robot in the woods. He befriends the giant and the two work to evade the government, who suspect it is an attack on the United States.
Genre: Family/adventure. The Iron Giant is one of the most recognizable and emotional animated films of the 1990s - extra impressive considering it's a Warner Bros film that came out in the middle of the Disney Renaissance!

The Boondock Saints (1999) - Rated R. Irish Catholic brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) living in 1990s Boston are sick of the crime on the streets. They decide to take matters into their own hands.
Genre: Crime/drama. The Boondock Saints has low scores on almost every film aggregator site, but is widely considered a cult classic. (Edit: warnings for insensitive portrayal of homosexuality and transgenderism.)

The Reluctant Dragon (1941) - Rated G. Robert Benchley wants to sell a movie idea to Walt Disney. As he searches for Walt, he wanders through the studio and sees how many of the magical movie effects are done.
Genre: Family/fantasy. I'll admit, this film was included on purpose. Not because it's amazing (it's interesting at best), but because of the story behind it. The Reluctant Dragon was released three weeks after the majority of the animators went on strike. (And most of the "workers" in the film are actually actors, another sore spot.) Disney fired all of the strikers before eventually agreeing to let them unionize and rehiring those who wished to return. (You can read more about the strike here.)

Let me preface by say I like "Little Shop of Horrors." I do. It's got a great cast, iconic music, the special effects are superb. It's good campy fun. "Little Shop of Horrors" is a great film. But its ending leaves me no end of frustration.
I bought the director's cut for Princess Aurora under the erroneous belief that it would have both versions. It turns out I was wrong.

As far as special effects, the original ending is a masterpiece of puppetry and technological wizardry and was probably a blast to film. As an actual ending to the preceding film, it's a chore and a half to get through. Our two leads are devoured by Audrey II, then the monster plant wrecks havoc on New York, and eventually the rest of the world. It's a bummer ending that clocks in, from invasion to "The End?!?" at around five and a half minutes, but feels much, much longer.
Admittedly, I haven't seen the original stage show, so maybe it worked there, but when I watched it for the first time with Princess Aurora, at one point I turned to her and said, "Why is this still going? It's over!"

If you're a Kaiju-stan or a special effects buff, then this ending is for you, but for me personally, it just drags.
Apparently test audiences agreed with me, because this ending was scrapped and a new, happily ever after conclusion cobbled together. Seymour rises from the rubble and electrocutes the plant into oblivion, and he and Audrey finally leave Skid Row for the suburbs.

But that just creates a whole new problem.
"Little Shop" is a modern Greek tragedy in which Seymour is consumed, literally, by the symbol of his greed, and poor Audrey, the only innocent in the film, falls with him. With the new ending, the movie is suddenly reframed from tragic cautionary fable to the Ultimate Nice Guy fantasy, in which Nice Guy Seymour must rescue guileless Audrey from her violent Jerk Jock boyfriend and as a result, gets a nice, blonde Tradwife as a reward. It's frankly a little uncomfortable.
So which ending is better? Well Princess Aurora preferred the one that didn't make her sob, but for me, it feels like a no win either way. Maybe if the original had been shorter, a few less faces mugging for the camera, it would've worked better. Again, I don't know how it was on stage, but actually being in the room with the rampaging giant puppet is probably a lot more exciting than watching it Chihuahua-sized on your flat screen.
I'll still sing "Be a Dentist" whenever it's time to brush my teeth, and appreciate "Little Shop" as the classic that it is. I just wish there was a better way to end the thing.

What would their favorite movies be? Do any of them have a least favorite?
(Random asks are always welcome!) Gail's favorite movie would probably be Crimson Peak by Guillermo del Toro (she'd be a fan of del Toro's work in general). The special effects on the ghosts would be a highlight for her. She'd also really like John Carpenter's The Thing too. Really anything horror with practical effects, she'd be a big fan of.
Her least favorite film would probably be the Baz Luhrmann adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Partly because she was forced to watch it for English class, and partly because the choice to use the original dialogue but pair it with 1990s culture felt jarring and took her out of the story.
In general, I feel like she'd be a fan of horror and romance, but dislike a lot of the more mainstream comedy movies. She finds a lot of popular comedies rely too much on either sexual humor, gross-out humor, or both.
Jacob's favorite movie would be Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Mainly because he used to watch it a lot as a kid with his dad and brother. However, he does find Kirk's character arc to be compelling, and Spock's death scene always makes him cry (knowing he comes back in the sequel only slightly helps). His least favorite movie would be Annabelle. It's one of those cases where he knows enough about the "true" story to know what they either changed or got wrong, and it annoys him. Honestly, he probably doesn't like the Conjuring franchise in general because of how much they deviate from the original stories.
His favorite genre would be sci-fiction and action movies. He'd actually really dislike horror films, mostly because the ones he's seen tend to be bloody/gore-y and make him feel sick. Caoimhe's favorite movie would be Mad Max: Fury Road. She really enjoyed Furiosa's story, plus the car chases and action shots were really cool to look at. She'd also really like ParaNorman, mainly because she can relate to feeling isolated from her peers due to things out of her control.
Her least favorite movie would probably be The Crow. Not because it's bad, but more because of the fact the lead actor, Brandon Lee, died during production. She can't watch it without feeling like she's watching a ghost the whole time. To her, the whole movie feel cursed.
Her favorite genres would be adventure/fantasy movies, while her least favorite would be romance (they're just not for her).
