ok actual ghost king xie lian hours now.
xie lian dies in that coffin, fully and wholly. repeated deaths wear his body down to the point where even the curse shackles cant bring him back.
his ghost body, that of a wrath, looks divine. his clothes are simple and white, golden stitching and patterns barely visible.
his fingers, once worn out, having repeatedly fallen off in his attempted escapes, are now made of gold.
all of his scars are filled with gold, in fact.
the hole through his chest, directly piercing his heart, flows over with gold and spreads out around his torso like shattered ceramic.
the flesh once covered by the cursed shackles is a line of gold, cracks flourishing like vines, under his jaw and up to his cheeks and eyes like tear tracks.
his lips once chapped and torn and bitten now shine gold under the sunlight.
his ears are pointed and he finds joy in wearing jewelry that jingle when he walks.
his red blood is now golden.
he makes his lair overtop of his grave, a cave that was only barely passable as a yong'an mausoleum, with no visible markers that anyone was buried there.
the blood from his hundred year burial infected the land around him for miles, and now its just as much his own as ruoye or fangxin. it listens and responds to him, and he can feel it move.
he still travels, but now he has somewhere to return to, and with his luck returned to normal, things are mostly fine.
instead he hosts markets in order to find cursed goods and keep them out of the hands of mortals. his lair is filled with so many cursed objects.
when he becomes a calamity, his motivation is to keep others from stumbling upon his lair and becoming hurt. as soon as he's out of the kiln he dissolves into gold dust and glitter, teleporting right back to his den and confusing the officials sent to observe him.
he still finds his human disguise being involved in the conflict between banyue and yong'an, and becoming general hua xie, and "dying" that same death.
his third ascension happens after he deals with a particularly nasty curse, he ascends in his human disguise which is basically just canon him. he gains the title as the martial god of curses and spells, which is quite accurate but he can't exactly tell people that he's been studying weird objects for centuries now can he? no one knows that he's the calamity known as White Gold Gathers...

thinking back on it some of those names in tgcf were really pointedly chosen
Yin Yu's name is the second half of 抛砖引玉 throwing out a brick to lure jade, a saying often used humbly to mean something like "i'm putting out my inferior work in the hopes of inspiring someone more skilled" (you actually see this a lot in fandom circles with people being humble about their fanart or fanfic)
Xie Lian's sword Fangxin 芳心 literally meaning fragrant heart, but metaphorically meaning a young girl's heart and especially her first love as in the saying 芳心暗许 a girl secretly pledging her heart (first crush).
I was confused about Ruoye 若邪 in the past, it's possible mxtx is going for a slightly more meta layer here because 邪 is normally read as xie2 and when read xie it means evil, essentially, but here it is read ye and when read ye (Classical Chinese only) it is generally just a tone particle. However there is a famous historical sword 莫邪 Moye (the "female" sword in the pair of swords 干将莫邪 gan jiang and mo ye) from the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BCE to 221 BCE) so perhaps that is the reference. However if read as Ruoxie then the meaning of this name is "like/as if/resembling evil" which is why I suspect its possible mxtx was going for a double meaning there from the "visual" first instinct interpretation when a reader sees 若邪 and hasn't gotten to the author's note clarifying its read as ruoye and not ruoxie.

The way Xie Lian is trauma bonded to both his spiritual weapons..
Well, kinda.
At first I was mortified after learning their origins and that Xie Lian kept them both.
But then it felt very...expected?
This is xie lian—he takes in misunderstood, broken, and lost people and things left and right and gives them homes and care, even when no one else would dare—especially then.
Of course he wouldn't blame them for being used as a tool for inflicting evil and pain, just as he had almost been used as well—and by the same person, nonetheless.
it wasn't Fangxin's fault and Ruoye wouldn't have wanted to hurt him either if it were sentient at the time.
So “kinda” as in they're bonded from trauma, but they’re also bonded over trauma, in a way.
(I also really love how Hua Cheng is definitely mortified for a moment as well, but still does not judge Xie Lian or question his choices or treat the two weapons a certain way based on his own personal feelings towards them—minus the time when Xie Lian was about to use Fangxin for you-know-what in the revised fangxin guoshi arc. He truly never disrespects Xie Lian’s wishes unless he is actively harming himself.)
#I was going to put the majority of this in the tags but oh well#as I was typing this autocorrect changed Xie Lian to Xie Pain??#does autocorrect read tgcf#I’m convinced#I haven’t gotten to book 4 in my reread yet so I’m sure I’ll have more thoughts later but#I love that xie lians spiritual tool is ruoye#it just feels so perfect for his character and story for many different reasons#Fangxin too#tian guan ci fu#heaven official's blessing#tgcf#xie lian#hua cheng#ruoye#fangxin

We need to talk about Lang Qianqiu more. What do you mean he was a crown prince? What do you mean his whole family and more were massacred in front of him by what he assumed to be his own teacher? What do you mean that until that point, he'd looked up to his teacher so fucking much, he had admired him and wished to be like him, he wanted nothing more than his approval? What do you mean that after his parents death, he was forced into the role of king and had to sort out politics and had no time to grieve? What do you mean that in the little time he had, he sought out his families (presumed) murderer and stuck him to a coffin with forty-nine (49) wooden nails? What do you mean he loves his family? What do you mean he ascended to godhood? What do you mean one of his best friends died? What do you mean people don't understand his character? What do you mean he has a kind heart and a good soul, respects honor and has a bit of pride? What do you mean that he doesn't have anyone to love and his parents death were a lie? What do you mean that he feels so fucking guilty for what he did to the wrong person, that he chases the culprit for 3 fucking books off-screen before showing up again? What do you mean that after his parents murderer turns into a ghost fire, he takes care of his son? What do you mean that he's trying to forgive the same way his teacher did? What do you mean that he's trying his best, he's fucking trying, he's well-respected and kind, but no one truly understands him besides his teacher, who he has a rocky relationship with at best? What do you mean that his teachings were so ingrained that after 400 years, he still calls him his guoshi? What do you mean he has a tiger in the manhua? What do you mean he's handsome? What do you mean he's protective and eager to serve? What do you mean he probably has PTSD and nightmares? What do you fucking mean? What the fuck do you mean?!

Thus, Ruoye dragged its bandages and listlessly floated to the side. Hua Cheng also casually tossed Eming over, and Eming assumed a dignified pose upon landing. Ruoye had been moping facing the wall, but it suddenly discovered a shimmering silver scimitar leaning against that same wall. It very carefully approached. The eye on Eming’s hilt twirled and looked over, its gaze calculating.
Fangxin remained somber and unmoved, making no show of acknowledging anything.
Not gonna lie, I would actually gladly read an entire 800-page book of the adventures of the sentient weapons. I like sentient weapons. It's a fascinating trope and an excellent narrative device. And these three weapons sound very interesting and plot-conducive.
