I’d get so much done if there was more of me.
With AyeforScotland Media Group, or AFSMG, video essays would be back on the menu, I’d actually get round to my white whale, the Grim Fandango essay.

Critics Consensus
Once you get past the horrendously unrealistic costuming, The King’s Honour becomes an admittedly predictable, but humorous, effortless evening watch.

To save the king, you must first break the curse. A very compact and concise film, but weak on the soundtrack and dialogue. Too many unnecessary monologues.

Knocked off half a star because no one took their shirts off. Unrealistic. Some of those shirts were far too flowy not to have an ‘accidental’ nip slip.

Well, that was truly delightful! The cast has amazing chemistry. Both between the lead mains and all the side characters! This is a film that knows what it is (and is not ashamed about it!): a light-hearted film that never takes itself too seriously, but manages not to become a satirical parod…

----------------------------------------
The King’s Honour
16+ | Magical Realism, Historical Fiction, Romance | Directed by Niki Lauda
This is a truly a soulless and uninspired chickenshit explotation of queerness and the use of fantastical elements in a desperate attempt to prop up a flailing script that falls flat. Calling this ‘magical realism’ is an insult to Gabriel García Márquez’s memory.
Every single element of this film is subpar at best, lacking in colour and substance and a solid foundation of existence. While one would think the landscape the film is shot in, the Scotland highlands, would improve the viewing, but somehow the cinematography is so terrible, it is just another way everything and everyone gets lost. It is a backdrop of breathtaking opportunity and they don’t simply drop the ball but not even bother to pick it up. There is little to no directional awareness in the camera work and the script and the honestly incoherent cinematic flow of this piece. There is not even a NOD to authenticity of any kind, even on a satirical level as that would require a modiqum of thought not seen here.
I could not call this a categorical fail at hubris because I truly can not fathom what Lauda was aiming for here in this production. If someone held a gun to by head and told me to guess the director of this film correctly, my husband would be receiving my life insurance payout in the morning. How the mighty have fallen.
Everyone is a take away from a cigarette break, a sudden career exit, or at some points, a cliff’s face. And in knowing this, it is the only way I feel even remotely connected to what I see on screen.

Marita Vlachou at The Guardian:
Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, on Wednesday announced the spinoff of many of its cable TV channels, including MSNBC, carrying out a plan the company had hinted at earlier this year. In addition to MSNBC, the portfolio of the newly created company titled “SpinCo” will also comprise CNBC, USA, Oxygen and E!, among other channels, as well as digital assets, including Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes. Those assets made about $7 billion in revenue in the year that ended Sept. 30, the company said in a press release.
Bravo, the NBC broadcast network, the Peacock streaming service, Telemundo as well as the theme parks business and film and television studios will remain part of Comcast. The Wall Street Journal was first to report the transaction was imminent. Mike Cavanagh, the president of Comcast, said the move will enable “both SpinCo and NBCUniversal to play offense in a changing media landscape.” “Taken together, the entirety of NBCUniversal will be on a new growth trajectory, fueled by our world-class content, technology, IP, properties and talent — all working in concert with each other as an integrated media company,” Cavanagh said. Mark Lazarus, the outgoing chair of the NBCUniversal Media Group, will serve as chief executive of the new company. The process is expected to be completed in about a year, the Journal reported earlier.
Comcast spins off nearly all of NBCU’s cable networks, including USA, CNBC, MSNBC, and E!, into a separate spin-off company named SpinCo. NBCUniversal will retain NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, and Peacock as its key assets.
Splitting off CNBC and MSNBC, and possibly USA, from NBCU, is a disastrous decision, mainly due to newsgathering resources being shared (MSNBC and CNBC) and sports coverage (primarily USA, but also some CNBC).

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.
youtube
We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.
youtube
Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.

Amphibia x Slugterra Status
What if the Calamity trios used to lived in Slugterra and then got sent to Amphibia.
The girls grew up in the slum in Antimony Cavern. Both Anne and Marcy lost their parents and Sasha was left behind by the Watiton, (she changed her last name to Waybright). They had to work on delivery, taking odd jobs, scavenge a few places and stopping poachers. They hate poachers, especially slugs poachers.
Their slugs act like their good conscience and are considered family.
The people known the girls as calamity trios due to their reputation of using collateral damage to win the duels and stopping slug poachers.
The girls are 15/16 years old.
Anne is dress in blue shirt, twin gray arm guards, gray gloves and gray trouser, armor holder at hip
Sasha is dress in pink shirt, a reddish cuirass from arm to  right shoulder, gray gloves and gray trouser, armor holder at hip
Marcy is dressed in green shirt, green goggles, gray gloves and gray trousers, armor holder wrap around the chest.
The media, fictions and food style are similar as Earth culture.
The Mecha beasts are programmed to be loyal to their riders, sometimes act a bit like animals.
Slingshot were made first then blasters for slugs.
Marcy likes to create makeshift bombs and tools to help their journey, such as stink bombs, flashbang and grapinghook. She has hi-tech glasses that allow to record, take pictures and connect to Daredevil’s goggles to see what he sees.
Anne makes the homemade slug food, Marcy asks the slugs to help with her experiments and Sasha helps the slugs remain in top shape.
The girls will have their supplies as well as maintenance tools in Amphibia but no mecha beast.
Slug energy can make plants grow faster than one usually in Amphibia.
Anne’s blaster is light blue with the barrel decorated in web style similar to X-duty takedown
Sasha’s blaster is pink, acts like a revolver fire mechanism and the barrel shape as a sharp edge.
Marcy’s blaster is light green, the barrel has small fins at top and side of the barrel, acting like a crossbow.
The girls know a few people, such as the Tracker molenoid Pronto; the mechanist slugslinger Kord Zane; the two robotics geniuses Jess and Ally; the historian and explorer Dr. Jan; scientist Terri; and best trickshot and pizza restaurant worker Mario Bravado.
Slugs used:
Anne: Arachnet (Web), AquaBeek (Splash), Diggrix (Digger), Fandango (NRG), Flaringo (Torch), Frost crawler (Frost), Gazzer (Gaz) (season 2), Hoverbug (Aero), Phosphoro (Aurora), Polero (Duo), Slyren (Singer),
Sasha: Armashelt (Hardshell), Dirt Urchin (Spike), Geoshard (Shard), Grenuke (Bombshell), Hop rock (Rocker), Lavalynx (Magma), (MakoBreaker (Chomper) season 2), Rammstone (Smasher), Sand angler (Sandy),Thresher (Sawbite), Tormato (Storm),
Marcy: Bubbaleone (Bubble), Crystalyd (Driller), Flatulorhinkus (Funk), Frightgeist (Phantom), Hexlet (Hex) (season 2), Hypnogrif (Psi), Jellyish (Goo), Lariat (Slime), Neotox (Tox), Vinedrill (Vine), Speedstinger (Daredevil), Tazerling (Shocker)

Just a random thought that I've just had, but it's crazy to think about the sheer amount of critically acclaimed media that came out in 1998. Like
In anime:
Perfect Blue
Serial Experiments Lain
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Cardcaptor Sakura
Yu-Gi-Oh
Initial D First Stage
Outlaw Star
In manga:
Hunter x Hunter began serialization
Kaiji had the Card E arc (okay this might just be a personal favourite)
In videogames:
Ocarina of Time
Half-life
Metal Gear Solid
Grim Fandango
Resident Evil 2
StarCraft
Banjo-Kazooie
Baldur's Gate
Xenogears
Thief: The Dark Project
Also Fallout 2, Sonic Adventure, Spyro, the Game Boy Color...
In cinema:
Saving Private Ryan
The Truman Show
There's Something About Mary
Mulan
A bug's life
The Prince of Egypt
(also Armageddon, which is considered the "most scientifically inaccurate" film ever made! That's worth mentioning)
That's A LOT. If you wanted to watch/read/play every single one of these, you'd have about 12 days per piece. Crazy.

Ref: Stepdad Master List
Anonymous asked (Before Fandango, after hypothetical drabbles):
i think the social media stepdad!joel things you put out are so indefinitely juicy
like, personally im a bit of a silent grudge holder, and ikik he’s technically with the mom, but if that was me, id make the man sweat/feel as shitty as him fucking the mom made me feel if u get me??
like the first thought that crossed my mind was that id send a video of ME getting fucked. but then i was like.. no, bc then he’d know that i was still thinking of him AND i fucked the guy because of him out of spite and sent the video to piss him off and get him off (even if Joel was thinking abt me while he fucked the mom, it doesn’t matter).
so my second thought: bringing a guy back home, but actually acting a little shy/coy, like a little flustered with him (maybe both Joel and the mom are home and greet them etcetc), and THEN fucking upstairs. the delicious torture that’d be for Joel. like pretending ur trying to be quiet, making it seem to Joel like u are too type of thing.
like he’s getting no pictures or videos. no attention. not even a glance. then fucking some guy that, in Joel’s head, actually makes u blush/feel good. and the best thing?? how can he be mad? he has the mom sat next to him :] every line that he swears can’t be crossed with you isn’t even a line that exists anymore because you’ve made it so he isn’t even in the equation anymore. he kept insisting that u both cant be sexual with eachother, that it’s wrong and shouldn’t happen. he was always the one who refused to touch you/do anything, so he can’t be mad for so many reasons when you find someone who can, and that wants to, and that won’t touch anyone else (and I think that last little bit would kill Joel - knowing this guy u brought back would touch you and no others. it’s a ‘luxury” Joel cant have in any way you look at it. he can’t not touch the mom, he won’t let himself touch you. and now that you’ve taken yourself off the table completely, what exactly can he do abt it?? would he be able to come onto you at all? idk, maybe no, cus how could he come onto you when before, he was always “can’t touch, cant fuck, even just watching each other is too much”)
------------
You make some great points!

Comcast doesn't want its cable TV networks anymore
Tumblr media
Cable networks used to be incredibly valuable. But in the streaming and cord-cutting era, they're in decline.
That's why Comcast is ditching almost all its cable networks into a new stand-alone company.
It would like to persuade other cable-TV owners to join in.
One of the country's biggest cable TV companies doesn't want its cable networks anymore. Would you like them?
That's the pitch Comcast is making Wednesday as it announces plans to split off almost all its cable TV networks into a new company. It's the same pitch Comcast floated as a possibility back in October, and most of the details are the same.
Comcast is set to spin off a new publicly traded company, owned by its existing shareholders. Into the spinco goes every cable network Comcast owns except for Bravo. That means networks like CNBC, MSNBC, USA, along with a few digital assets, including its Fandango movie-ticket service.
It plans to hang on to the rest of its media business, including its NBC broadcast network, Peacock streaming service, Universal film and TV studio, and Universal theme-parks business. And Bravo. (Can't wait for someone smart to explain why Comcast is so attached to Bravo. Maybe it's as simple as "Real Housewives"?)
For the record: Comcast says it thinks the cable networks it is ditching can be successful on their own. The new company "will be ideally positioned for success and highly attractive to investors, content creators, distributors and potential partners," CEO Brian Roberts said in a statement. That "partners" reference is important — Comcast has also floated the idea of folding in other companies' cable networks into the spinoff, which would theoretically give it more heft and negotiating power with advertisers and pay-TV distributors.

Dear Evan, today i wanna write you something that is very close to my heart. ❤️ i am not an idiot you might never read this and maybe it is strange for you that someone you don't know writes for you, but I just want to write this down for you. Maybe knowing how you just by beeing you can help people is something that could brighten your day. I often in the past here on this page told you how much you helped me when I was dealing my mental health. Today I want to give you an example for it, but to write about it is not that easy because I have to go back to a day that was very painful for me. I lost my best friend three years ago. We were friends for over 20 years. Were extremely close. I talked about him here too. Especially recently as he died in August 2021. I miss him so much. As it happened and as i found out it hit me hard. I didn't want to talk to anyone or see anyone. I didn't talk for 5 days. The only thing i did was lying in bed, crying and i was not in a good place. He died on his way home from me the night August 7 to 8 in a car crash. I can't tell you how many what if questions went to my head. I was blaming myself for it too. Then in my pain i turned to you which i did before because of my mental health. Watched funny Videos of you. I found comfort in you as you remind me a little of him. You both had a simular laugh and sense of humor. It helped me. It gave me comfort as no one could give me comfort. It still does when i miss him and I want to thank you for that, for beeing you. Don't ever change you are right just the way you are love you always. 🩷 -𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒏
Evan has no social media. I know he won't read that. I write to him just for fun

It’s time to explore the final Hammer Horror film of the 1970s, To the Devil… a Daughter (1976). [Note: The mystery comedy film The Lady Vanishes (1979) would drop and… vanish… in 1979.] To the Devil… a Daughter has the reputation of putting the final nail into Hammer’s filmmaking coffin. The quality and success of Hammer productions spiraled throughout the decade as the landscape of horror films changed – especially after The Exorcist (1973). Surprisingly, the film is much better than how the Grue Crew remembers it and how its reputation proceeds it. That is, up until its abrupt and head-scratching ending and that strange devil puppet. If you know, you know. Check out what the Grue Crew thinks of the film directed by Peter Sykes and featuring Christopher Lee, Richard Widmark, and Nastassja Kinski.
At the time of this writing, To the Devil… a Daughter is available to stream from Peacock and PlutoTV as well as various PPV from Amazon and Fandango At Home. To the Devil… a Daughter is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from SCREAM Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973), an ABC Movie of the Week starring Kim Darby, Jim Hutton, William Demarest, and Barbara Anderson. Grue Believer Lone Wolf suggested this flick. Woot!
We want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: comment on the site or email the Decades of Horror 1970s podcast hosts at [email protected].
