“King Leonard is so rich that he can buy whatever he wants. Anything old or broken is thrown onto the growing pile of rubbish outside his castle. But one day something breaks that can’t be easily replaced. And what’s worse, King Leonard can’t find anyone who knows how to fix it”
What can children do when their favourite toys are broken? And what can we all do to cut down on how much we buy and throw away? ‘King Leonard’s Teddy’, Phoebe Swan’s new picture book for children is a classic story about attachment, which through its wonderful illustrations also shows us all how small actions can have a big impact on our environment.
We first met Phoebe Swan at the Curve Garden when she was teaching at Holy Trinity Primary School in Dalston. We are delighted that just a few years later she has chosen to launch her special book here on Saturday 9 March, 2-4pm. The free event includes drop-in family workshops making funky patchwork pencil cases, Phoebe will be reading from ‘King Leonard’s Teddy’ and you will also be able to buy copies of the book.
Phoebe grew up in Hackney and was encouraged to 'make it yourself', helping her Dad rescue things from skips to be turned into works of art. She made her first illustrated book at the age of 5! She studied Children's Book Illustration and now teaches Illustration and Graphics at Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts.
She explains her Illustration technique:
“I started making a lot of illustrations using lino print whilst on the MA in Children's Book Illustration. However with this project, because there are a lot of details I developed a digital technique, 'carving' into layers of scanned textures in Photoshop with the eraser, to re-create the lino print effect. This gave me a lot more flexibility to change things and move them around.”
Phoebe describes some of the inspiration behind ‘King Leonard’s Teddy’:
“I came across an article about an old toy hospital that after the recession was suddenly doing more business as people wanted to have their toys repaired, rather than buying new ones. I thought this sounded like good material for a children’s story. Then on a holiday I did a lot of drawing and when I wrote the story, I based Leonard’s home on a castle on a hill in Portugal. In the book I replaced the hill with the pile of rubbish!”
Phoebe hopes her book will help show children and their families how to reduce waste and look after the environment:
“There is value in learning to fix and make things yourself. Most of us don’t think about how much we waste; our rubbish is collected regularly, so it’s easy to forget. The pile of rubbish surrounding Leonard’s castle helps us to visualise what the accumulation of all that stuff would look like. Small actions such as repairing an object instead of buying a new one might not seem like they will make much difference to the environmental crisis the world is facing, but if everyone made the effort, it would add up to a big impact.”

Trainee Lydia, in becoming a History Explorer
Tumblr media
It’s been a whirlwind start to this Traineeship (in the best of ways) and I can’t believe how quickly the first two months have gone. I’ve been able to pack in so many things so far! So, I’m a third of the way through, what have I been up to?
The first big project I got started on was ‘My Richmond’, a four week course, based on exploring the history of the local area, working with families to help them work together to explore their local heritage. I was supported to take ownership of the project; researching the local history, planning the sessions and delivering the course. It was a really exciting project to get stuck in to. I started off researching the history of the Castelnau area of Barnes (the course took place in Castelnau library), and I really enjoyed delving into the hidden history of the area, as well as finding out a bit more about some of the more famous stories. From there it was all about planning the course. As it took place across four weeks I decided we’d go on a little journey; Week 1 we started at the end of Castelnau, looking at the history of Hammersmith Bridge.  Week 2 we went below the bridge to look at the River Thames. Then across the bridge we went to look at the small Castelnau area and its famous buildings in Week 3. Then finally for Week 4 we met some more of the local People.  Each week we added to a group model of the local area, building 3D elements which matched with that week’s theme. It looked fantastic when it was all done and we were all very proud of our creation!
Tumblr media
Being from a heritage and theatre background I decided to mix the two together and started each session with some storytelling. As the group were a mixture of ages and abilities this was a really fun way to engage the group in the history. From there, families could then move around six activities related to the stories we just explored.  These activities included a mixture of arts and crafts, ‘acting it out’, and exploring historic sources.
I really enjoyed this course, I love exploring history in creative ways and with a group of brilliant and enthusiastic families who joined me in becoming ‘History Explorers’ that’s exactly what we did each week.  The opportunity to lead the research, planning, admin, creation of activities, and facilitation each week was such a fantastic experience and a great part of the traineeship!
