FALLOUTOBER DAY 2: LITTLE FISH
[So I misread the prompt as ‘big fish’ and only just realised my mistake as I am making this post aaaaaaa]
When you walk into bunker hill for the first time, you will overhear two traders discussing ol’ Peg, the ghoul whale! I’ve always loved that conversation and its implications for the ocean at large in fallout.

food in the wasteland
this post is inspired by @newvegascowboy 's post on food in the wasteland (go check it out if you haven't read it, its wonderful), and it got me thinking, much of the world in fallout has one characteristic, in one way or another, there is always some group grasping onto the past, and i wondered how that could affect food
lots of folks hold recipes and family tradition close, and at the end of the world that's all some folks have, and with that thought i started wondering how culture would affect food and food would affect culture
a couple notes first, if yall will humour me
i wont be covering fallout 76 or prime (for now) as i have next to no knowledge of them
the Nuka world dlc will get its own post because of unique circumstance within the setting
this wont be all encompassing, it is a collection of thoughts and notes (which yall can use as a basis for any ideas)
yall are wonderful and enjoy

vibes of the food
hardy food, mostly local with a lot of proteins and carbs, stuff that lasts, especially through the winter. diamond city and goodneighbour have more high end food, good cuts of beef, venison and even deathclaw are found in the markets, takashi toils over hardy broths and succulent mirelurk paired with glowing fungus, fresh breads and high end cooking, down south and along the coast, theres lots of fish and mirelurk on the menu, small house gardens, while to the north there are many orchards, and fields, small by prewar status but mind blowing to folks who come from dc way, central boston is home to more merging of the local diets, but much more pre-war food, folks scrounge for food more than grow it. the food is almost reminiscent of the colonial days, lots of dried or canned goods

boiled fog crawler
cooked meats
homemade stews
fried eggs
homemade gravy
roast chicken
homebrewed alcohol
baked (silt) beans
razorgrainmeal (oatmeal stand in)
food vibes very hearty but humble, lots of seafood, meat heavy meals are meant for special occasions, salted foods are common, lots of preserved foods, very dense foods, very filling, typical of a town where you have to worry about fish people and ancient sea gods, it is the food of people who think that an easy week is half a day off after a full 50 hour work week, imported foods like mutfruit jam is saved for the guests kinda food

squirell stew: made with squirell, potato and carrots
cooked meat
possible recipes
boiled mirelurk
apple "jam"

food vibes desperate and despair, most soil is unfarmable due to all the bombs, people eat what they catch, brahmin are sickly and produce precious little food, its inventive in a sad way, even with cleaned up rivers the fish are still unfit to eat, and will be for a while, the soil will take lots of tlc and hydroponics can only do so much, its a wasteland
the mojave
go to meats/egg
bighorner (used for milk, wool and hides)
brahmin (used for milk, fertiliser, transport and hides)
deathclaw

stews -soups
tamales
grilled maize
fried fish (near lake mead)
cactus fries
nopales
jalapeno poppers
sopapillas
homemade bread
homemade rolls
food vibes western-new mexico, the strip has more high end food but most of the mojave has more rural staples, very flavourful, kinda ranch food, keeps you going all day and makes you glad to come home, really homecooked vibes, lots of variations, like never ask for a recipe in a crowded room cause it will start a fight over whose grandma had the better recipe, lots of meat and vegetables, very little fish, not a lot of "pickyness" over food
zion canyon traditional
meat
perch
rainbow trout
yao guai
gecko
mantis
bighorner
molerat

roasted pinyon nuts
food vibes not highly intricate but somehow nostalgic, very traditional indigenous, simple in an uncomplicated way not a bad way, some of the best quality ingredients around, clean food and clean water, smoky flavors, food isn't meant to be showy or fancy, its meant to leave you full and happy as you spend time with family, its meant to be honored and not wasted
new California republic
meat
brahmin
deathclaw
deathclaw egg
gecko
gecko egg
fish
various wild game
crops
potato
onion
cabbage
maize
green mutfruit
fava bean
apple
rice
tomato
carrot
foraged
seaweed
recipes
shi rice: cooked rice served with a side of seaweed or fish
brahmin, any cut of meat grilled or fried
cornbread
grits
tortillas
cabbage soup
chile
cabbage salad
mashed potatos
baked potato
sauerkraut-coleslaw
pickled veg
jerky
mashed potato
baked potato
stews
soups
food vibes very diverse, lots of regional staples, San Francisco has lots of seafood while towns like Modoc have mostly brahmin meat and veg, Klamath has gecko, its very locale dependent ¨(out of character, fallout 1-2 is super bleak and sparse) food is often a matter of survival more than fancy, with the exemption of larger settlements and cities where imports are available and you can afford to experiment with food

Lord of the Flies Prompt List (Mild TW mentioned/implied topics)
-What if the island wasn’t tropical
-What if the boys (aged up) were actually in the military on their way to war when they crashed
-The beast was actually real
-When the boys are eventually rescued, they don’t return to England. Instead, they are sent to America as war continues
-(my friend gave me this one) When the officer lands, he does not speak English

-Disease strikes the boys
-Jack was always the chief
-It wasn’t Roger that killed Piggy
-Modern AU
-Simon isn’t the only one the Lord of the Flies ‘talks’ to
-Cannibalism.
-One of the boys, thanks to the impromptu landing, is left with an injury that will stick with them for years
-What if there were predators on the island?
-Simon can see the future (because he’s not beating the prophet allegations with this one boys)
-The plane doesn’t end up crashing into the water, it very much stays on the island (dead pilot time)
-British boys weren’t the only ones there
-Character(s) break the fourth wall but are really bad at doing it
-Ralph’s kind of experience on a farm helps to start a little garden

-The Painted Faces Possess. There Is Much More To Fear Than The ‘Beast’.
-The boys never get fire
-Alternatively, the boys become much more civilized under Piggy’s ruling
-Ralph and Jack enter a partnership. Ralph is the level-headed and rational thinker, Jack has the voice and quick thinking. Jalph shippers go wild
-Describe the conversation between Jack and Simon’s guardian and Roger and Piggy’s Auntie.
-Ralph’s father does actually search for them.
-There are snakes
-What is the littluns point of view for through this?
-How do Sam and Eric feel during the rescue and/or hunt?
-Simon comes across the remains of the piglets (the lord of the flies babies)
-Disease does not affect the boys, but the island’s flora
-Disease does not affect the boys, but the island’s fauna
-Acid rain
-Prehistoric remains are found
-Ralph starts enforcing his rules with violence
-The island changes them in more ways than one
-It’s a different animal they are hunting
-Piggy has an asthma attack
-The biguns go through Uncomfortable Island Puberty TM
-Jack’s tribe leans more into cultic behavior. Now, they worship and sacrifice to the Beast
-Simon successfully tells them the truth of the ‘Beast’
-Out of every boy on the island, Jack feels the most guilt in the aftermath. Especially when Ralph is found drowned in a cow trough.
-The littluns start their own tribe
Added 4/22/25:
-Explore the fate of Piggy’s parents
-What was (any of) the boys life like before the island?

-They weren’t the first humans to wash up on that island
-There are caves beneath the island, going down miles and centuries
-Jack never meant for things to go so far. But now, with the weight of his own deeds, he can’t stop.
-The littluns are the only mature ones
4/23/25: some fantasy prompts to explore more supernatural themes
-Mermaid AU
-Fantasy creatures inhabit the island
-Do something magical with the conch I guess
-The boys get animal mutations
-the war was a government cover up for an active alien invasion the boys experience first hand.

If you do use any plz don’t credit I don’t own ideas but plz plz PLEASE tell me if you do end up posting anywhere so I can read it

Can you imagine if Bethesda let you roleplay in Fallout 4. There is so much opportunity for an incredibly interesting backstory given your character lived before the war.
You could’ve been a stormwater technician with a background in water purification systems that could’ve been an essential help to the Minutemen and the people of the Commonwealth. You could’ve been a botanist or biologist who has a better handle on how flora and fauna have evolved and mutated over overtime. That would’ve made you an incredible asset to the Brotherhood or helped you fit right in with the Institute. You could’ve been a city planner that knows the Commonwealth and it’s underground secrets like the back of your hand. The Railroad would’ve coveted those skills when trying to come up with new routes or find secure safehouses. All of these professions and many more could’ve come with stat bonuses or special feats or unique dialogue like in The Outer Worlds.
But no, you are a wife-having male soldier or a husband-having female lawyer who has a baby son that you can’t even choose the gender or name of. And no, you don’t get stat bonuses or anything interesting like that. Each sole survivor had unique dialogue regarding their past lives that was cut from the game despite being fully implemented in an attempt to not box the pre-boxed characters Bethesda already created. They even have canon names and some people for some reason choose to keep them!!! And above all the “choice” that you are forced into is inherently sexist because why would a pre-war lawyer know how to use power armor in the first quest or even fire all these crazy kinds of guns. The game is practically built around the male sole survivor, even the intro features him.
How can Bethesda claim Fallout 4 is a role-playing game when you are forced to have a white voice, a white grandfather/grandmother/father (also in the intro) and to be a certain sex (no nb option and incentivized male character choice) and have a certain background job and the dialogue options that you are given are “yes, no, sarcasm, and question”. Fallout 4 had the potential to be the best game in the entire series and it is still my favorite but fuck the wasted potential is so rough.

I tried searching but with the hellsite being the way it is it most likely just didn't want to actually search your blog, but what are your thoughts on fallout 76 then?
I know the game gets made fun of a lot but it's definitely turned around, and it actually has much more varied flora than fallout 4.
Also fauna, but that should be a given!
I've never actually played 76! The last I checked up on it was when I made deathjaw for deathclaugust, only to then discover they'd added snapping turtles to the game in the form of the Ogua, and went on a little wiki journey of all the critters and locations and got very indignant that they put all this thought into 76, a game I personally would never play and most people who do would never really appreciate. how dare they
except it's obviously that 4 had to make its engine and ran up on time constraints, but 76 got to capitalize on the existing assets and put more time into new and far more wild things to decorate it with. it's tough looking at it from the outside because there's only so much that wiki screenshots can really convey but it looks WAY more verdant and fun to explore, and has some actual sub-biomes to roam around in. 4 didn't have much beyond 'wasteland', 'beach' and 'far harbor', though far harbor was a very good step in the right direction, mood lighting and pervading sense of terror on a survival game notwithstanding.
A lot of the general creature mutations are 'make it bigger' which I'm kind of bored with in the Fallout verse, so I appreciate the critters like opossums and frogs being tiny but really fucking weird! and the plants straight up overgrowing locations, that's cool. mutant kudzu when
my takeaway from all this is they overextended their goals way too hard in making it a multiplayer online game, thus losing out on polish, optimization, and accidentally making it feel really, really lonely bc the player interaction they relied on for making it seem like a more social game simply can't be there all the time. This can have a plus because it looks like there are way more things that want to eat you, and you're the last one. everyone else has been devoured

Polin Fic Recs - Polin vs Pebling
Evidently, I awoke this morning and chose chaos (aka tumblr ranting). Since I'm already knee-deep in the mud, might as well go all in. Here are my top fic recs for the "Pen marries Debling" AU.
Prepare for MAXIMUM ANGST.
These fics explore the fallout of Pen's regretful choice, featuring infidelity, heartbreak, and ultimately, a path towards healing and a Polin HEA (thank god).
Trigger Warning: Infidelity.
I'll be back to my usual fluff and sunshine soon, but sometimes a heavy dose of angst is a guilty pleasure of mine.
1. grieving for the living by itwasglorious Mature. Regency. Complete. 51,527 words. Pen marries Debling. Colin leaves and returns to London after 1 year. Lady Danbury is Team Polin and the MVP. Debling is absent and just not right for Pen. Polin HEA guaranteed, but it is torture getting there.
2. Secret Love Song by usuallysunny Explicit. Regency. Complete. 77,920 words. Pen marries Debling. Colin leaves and returns to London after 5 years. Debling is having his own regrets about marrying Pen. Violet gives both Colin and Pen an honest talking to. Colin helps Pen and together they find a HEA for all.
3. you're gonna break my heart tonight by the_strangest_person Explicit. Regency. Complete. 12,264 words Pen is engaged to Debling. Colin is feeling lots of angst. At the Pebling engagement ball, Colin begs Pen to marry him instead, but she will take some convincing.
4. Penelope married Debling by elhigd General audience. Regency. Complete. 4,132 words. Told from Debling's POV. Debling marries Pen and then leaves for two years to document flora and fauna. He returns to find his wife has had two chestnut haired babies in the meantime. I quite like Debling in this story, he is kind and sensible.

here's something no one asked for: bats fallout 4 au
cass: made as an institute courser and the best of the best with a perfect clear record until she was ordered to execute a traitor and she bounced, she drifts for years anywhere and everywhere, eventually ending up in goodneighbor and through Coincidences into the office of one Barbara Gordon
babs: a doctor in goodneighbor specializing in human/machine interface and neurobiology, aka railroad agent oracle she and her partner Dinah run the memory den, part therapeutic establishment part front for synth liberation activities Babs helps deprogram synths and let them lead normal lives
Jason: he was taken into bruce's vault after his parents died, he was born human but turned into a ghoul thanks to a near death experience and a radiation bath, by the time we meet him, he's a drifter blown into goodneighbor hiring out his services as a merc, steadily moving in organized crime through some maneuvering
duke: a psyker (kinda like the forecaster if you played NV), he has the ability to see into the future if he concentrates, however it leaves him with huge migraines, his parents went missing after a raider attack and he joins the minutemen (honestly what is more MM than WAR) to try and find them
steph: both she and her mom are prewar ghouls (all of the cluemaster stuff still happens but he doesn't survive the bombs in jail), they used to live in diamond city until all the ghouls got kicked out, they lived in goodneighbor for a time, with steph working at the local clinic, run by leslie, eventually they both moved north to the slog (a settlement run by ghouls in an old swimming pool) when crystal wanted to get clean, steph works there as basically the town doctor
tim: (spoilers for a ten year old game but:) kinda like synth shaun he is a permanently stuck at the age of like ten, still a tech genius but like.... litol (did I say this just cause I thought it was funny.... yes)
alfred: a fuckin mr handy
bruce: vault dweller that imprinted on said mr handy like a duckling after his parents died
dick: you can literally keep his backstory intact and he makes perfect sense, haley circus is just from new vegas, after his parents murder he joined up with lyons pride and moved east with the brotherhood of steel, when the new elder rose to power after the lyons' death dick started to see the writing on the wall of fascism and jumped ship leaving that life behind, joining up with duke's new and improved MM to protect people from people he swore brotherhood to
damian: obv still bruce and talia's kid, talia is a pre war scientist and businesswoman, keeping herself and her half siblings alive and young as long as they keep their father and his weird artifact locked up. damian grows up in the closest thing to pre war luxury the post apocalypse has to offer. Eventually he wants to go out and see the world, meet his dad, write a guide to wasteland fauna. talia hires jason to guard him so he stops trying to rush down feral ghouls with a sword.

ROUND 2 MATCH 17
Tumblr media
Nomi-Nomi propaganda:
“Most characters have at least one ending where the relationship ends for one reason or another but Nomi-Nomi doesn’t. They’ll stay by your side in any ending. They’re a geek who likes anime and video games. They’re obsessed with studying the flora and fauna of Vertumna so they can use it in their own stories. They’re demisexual. If Sol is nonbinary, they can exchange a secret nonbinary high five. (Which is a regular high five but you’re both nonbinary.)”
John propaganda:
“Sad beef jerky of a man with a sexy voice. He stabs a guy for being rude to you. He's cosplaying actual John Hancock. He's the town mayor that wants to leave and get shot at because he thinks he's getting too full of himself. He's also so, so sad and I need to hug him so bad.”

Happy WBW! What kind of other media inspires your worldbuilding? Are there specific movies, TV shows, video games, artwork, theatre, songs, etc. that have helped shape the settings for your stories?
The Fallout video game series really inspired the aesthetics of some parts of Arcadian Wilds, with the Wasteland inspiring Obsolete and the surrounding "fried" areas. Good Neighbour in Fallout 4 sort of inspired Sight, as well as real-life inspiration from the city of York in England, and also the video game Stray. The aesthetics of the Cyberspace were inspired by the video game art for Detroit: Become Human, and also Cyberpunk. Mad Max also gave me some ideas.
Music-wise I couldn't give you a list because I would be here all YEAR, but I will say the design of CS and the worldbuilding came whilst listening to a LOT of Wasteland, Baby by Hozier.
Released was inspired by the Magnus Archives (I haven't listened to the Magnus Protocol yet!).
A lot of my writing is inspired by (now painfully), Neil Gaiman, but also myths, folklore, Homer, verbal passed-down folktales, the brothers Grimm, an encyclopedia of Maltese beasts and fauna, and Welcome to Night Vale writers Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor.
Thank you so much, I didn't even realise all the little pieces of inspiration I have. I should give The Magnus Archives another listen, I've been stuck in the mud with Released.

Ten thoughts about Fallout Season 2:
1. The Ghoul and Lucy's journey, and further development of their relationship. Looking forward to seeing how the Ghoul and Lucy's dynamic will play out.
2. Curious of Norm's fate. And learning more about the experiment connecting Vaults 31, 32 and 33.
3. Maximus dealing with becoming a true knight within the Brotherhood
4. Further backstory of the Ghoul and his experience straight after fleeing with Janey from the nuclear fallout
5. More variety in the Wasteland fauna - i.e. Deathclaws, super mutants, mirelurks, radscorpions, cazadors etc
6. The realisation of the New Vegas strip to screen. (Perhaps a mention of the Courier too?)
7. Introduction of Synths into the series
8. References to other factions such as the Institute and the Enclave
9. Following Hank and his narrative unfolding in New Vegas
10. More of the Ghoul

re: the allergies/holidays/birthday/etc post you just reblogged, can we have a few little known facts about sarit, or iona? (or both if I'm very lucky)
Sure! (And thank you for letting me talk about my beloved characters)
Tumblr media
A funny thing about Sarit and her long list of medical issues: she has no known allergies at all! Even the exotic allergies common in the settled systems from various alien flora and fauna that can debilitate many other people. Sarit's ravaged and painful lungs have no problem handling all known forms of alien pollen/dander/allergens you can think of.
She grew out her hair only once, in her teen years when she was still figuring herself out. But other than that, Sarit has kept the same haircut she had since she was that sickly little boy sitting behind a computer terminal while bedridden.
She LOVES chunks pumpkin pie. This is perplexing to others, especially Andreja, since it has the consistency and appearance of gelatinous orange poison.
She can control her mechanical prosthetic right arm wirelessly. It doesn't happen often, but she does have the ability to make her arm crawl to her using its fingers like a horrible metal spider.
Her birthday is September 14.
I mentioned it before, but my favorite comfort headcanon is that Sarit is distantly related to an alternate-universe version of my Fallout 4 OCs Zoe and Nathan Bhatia. In Starfield's universe, Zoe and Nathan were happily married in 2077 and lived happily ever after with their son Shaun. Shaun would go on to have a brilliant career in robotics and computers that would lay the foundation for the technology used in the settled systems. Shaun Bhatia is Sarit's great-great-great-great-great grandfather.

Over the course of the crusade, Iona found various ways (many of them very unethical) to taste the blood of her companions, and learned to identify each of them from taste alone.
Iona's birthday is the Pathfinder equivalent of August 27. (and naturally, that is also Saints Row Iona's birthday)
When Iona is bored during a long war council meeting, she will summon a servant to fetch her a mug of cow's blood she will loudly sip to signal her desire to end the meeting. If things continue against her wishes, she will send for a crazy bendy straw to loudly slurp up the last drops of blood from the mug.
Iona is very tall, one of the perks of being a dhampir. She inherited many of the positive traits of a full vampire, including the unearthly conventional beauty and a tall physique. She is a very slutty supermodel with supernatural powers over blood.
Despite having a mountain of kinks, one of Iona's semi-secret turn offs is receiving pain. She is very much not a masochist in bed, and prefers inflicting pain via her fangs or other sex toys her partner consents to using.
One of her favorite ways of flirting with Arueshalae is following a battle, the two of them will walk through the battlefield, over the corpses of their enemies to retrieve Arue's arrows. Arueshalae will pull each arrow out of the bodies of their foes and salaciously hand them to Iona so she can lewdly lick the blood off the blades of the weapons. This display often makes their fellow companions uncomfortable, if not queasy. The two of them often have to quickly retreat to the privacy of the commander's tent in the aftermath, with Iona's chin dripping with gore and Arue's bright red eyes flaring with desire.
