RM is the third member to do a solo release in Chapter 2. According to his posts, notably the identity film and the preview of the content, this album is:
Record of RM : Indigo From the colors of nature, human, etc.
Use it

He explained in the episode of the jacket shoot, that after releasing Mono that’s black and white, Indigo is the color that express himself (he also mentions it in the interview of Proof collector edition (src)). He adds brown too, with natural and warm shades.
The studio Sparks Edition was in charge of the album design.
Some people also noticed that in Korean, indigo is written 남색, which can be interpreted as an acronym for 남준의 색깔, meaning Namjoon’s colors (cr.).
RM posted several stories on Instagram before the release, including a picture of Oregon blue, a pigment considered as the bluest blue (src).

In his photos, RM is surrounded by props meaningful to him:
a painting (see below) by Yun Hyongkeun, called Blue, 1972 (src #1, #2, #3, you can also check page 4 of this PDF for more info). RM admires Yun a lot, to the point that the first song of the album is named after him and has citations from him in the lyrics
Pierre Jeanneret’s desk and chair. He’s a Swiss architect RM likes
Namjoon’s old jeans and stools. He mentioned that jeans feat well with the concept as the more you wear them, the more comfortable they get

I thought since Danica McKellar has signed an exclusive two year contract with GAC Family and can’t appear on Hallmark, or any other network, that we’d take a look back at all the movies, and some other stuff, that Danica did while apart of the Hallmark family. Who’s to say she won’t come back one day.
First up, the movies and specials.
2015 - The Perfect Match (HC/June Weddings)
2015 - Crown for Christmas (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
2016 - Wedding Bells (HC/June Weddings)
2016 - My Christmas Dream (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
2017 - Campfire Kiss (HC)
2017 - Coming Home for Christmas (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
2018 - Very, Very, Valentine (HC/Countdown to Valentine’s Day)
2018 - Spring Fever Preview Show (HC/Spring Fever)
2018 - Love in Design (HC)
2018 - Christmas at Grand Valley (HM&M/Miracles of Christmas)
2019 - Love and Sunshine (HC/Summer Nights)
2019 - Matchmaker Mysteries: A Killer Engagement (HM&M)
2019 - Christmas at Dollywood (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
2020 - Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Preview Special (HM&M)
2020 - Matchmaker Mysteries: A Fatal Romance (HM&M)
2020 - Christmas She Wrote (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
2021 - Matchmaker Mysteries: The Art of the Kill (HM&M)
2021 - You, Me & the Christmas Trees (HC/Countdown to Christmas)
Let’s break this down shall we.
16 total films
12 films for the Hallmark Channel
4 films for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries
2 hosted preview specials
2 June Wedding movies
2 non movie block themed movies
6 Countdown to Christmas movies
1 Miracles of Christmas movie
3 signature mystery movies
1 spring fever movie
1 summer nights movie
Danica also appeared in the 2016 and 2020 ’12 Days to Christmas’ specials that Hallmark was doing. Basically short videos taking about special Christmas moments with Hallmark acotrs. These were posted on their website, and aired on the Hallmark Channel in segments during Countdown to Christmas programing.
In 2021 Danica, along with Tamera Mowry-Housley, hosted a sneak peak of some of the movies for Countdown to Christmas that aired during the commercial breaks of the premiere of the last Fall Harvest film ‘Advice to Love’. While Hallmark had put on end to the preview shows by this time they probably thought we gotta do something to promote Countdown to Christmas.
Listing all the Hallmark premieres, talkshows, and functions Danica attended promoting her films, or just Hallmark in general, is a lot. She popped up quite a bit for the network, and plenty of articles listed her as one of the most recognizable Hallmark faces along with Candace Cameron Bure, Lori Loughlin, and Lacey Chabert throughout the years. I did look up that she was a guest on Hallmark’s former daytime talkshow ‘Home & Family’ twenty four times in the show’s nine season run.
I think that’s it, but if I missed anything let me know, and thanx.

Preview: 2021 Independent Film Festival Boston
My favorite film festival in Boston, in Massachusetts and possibly the world is Independent Film Festival Boston (read my coverage here).  I have a special place for this festival: in 2014 my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at the festival, and in 2015 I was on the Documentary Jury. 2020 felt very strange to not have IFFBoston, which usually occurs in late April / early May. However, we were lucky to get a virtual version of the their mini-fest IFFBoston Fall Focus last November. While we are not returning to the Brattle, Somerville and Coolidge Corner theatres for this year’s festival, I am over-the-moon that this year IFFBoston is back with an online festival from May 6-16, 2021.
Tumblr media
Here are the films on my radar for this year’s fest.:
Thurs. May 6:
Opening Night Film is the documentary Summer of Soul, the directorial debut of Questlove! I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about this concert doc since its Sundance premiere. Can’t wait!
Fri. May 7:
The documentary feature A Reckoning in Boston premieres. Directed by James Rutenbeck, who is no stranger to IFFBoston: he directed the short doc Class of ‘27 and was the editor on Intelligent Lives, which were both really good!
Sat. May 8:
What a day for the fest: the scap metal drama Holler features the always reliable Pamela Adlon. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is about an online role playing game.
I’m very excited about the doc Spring Valley, from my friends director Garrett Zevgetis and producer Ariana Garfinkel, whose last doc was the excellent Best and Most Beautiful Things, one of the highlights of IFFBoston 2016. Full disclosure: I was a donor to this doc!
Sun. May 9:
Next up is the Toni Collette-lead ensemble film Dream Horse. Also this day is the doc Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America.
Mon. May 10:
The Dry is a mystery crime story lead by Eric Bana.
Tues. May 11:
The Oxy Kingpins looks at the pharmaceutical companies and those responsible for the opioid crisis.
Wed. May 12:
I’m a big fan of Edgar Wright’s films notably Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver. Now he has made his documentary debut with The Sparks Brothers about the influential art rock duo Sparks. As someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about them (though I did like their song “Eaten by the Monster of Love” on the Valley Girl soundtrack), I am looking forward to this doc!
Thurs. May 13:
Marvelous and the Black Hole is a coming of age comedy about magic, featuring Rhea Perlman. Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliche documents punk singer Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex and it’s co-directed by her daughter.
Friday May 14:
First Date is a coming of age comedy about a teen’s first date gone awry. Its been a long time since we had a movie like this, which is why I’m intrigued.
Sat. May 15:
The drama Last Night in Rozzie is about friends from Boston’s Roslindale reuniting years later. I’m psyched it co-stars Kevin Chapman (who I worked with on Monument Ave). Strawberry Mansion is about a dystopian future where people have to submit their mind for dream audits.
Sun. May 16:
The Gig is Up documents the people behind gig-based economy such as ride shares and food deliveries. The Closing Night Film is How It Ends, co-directed by Zoe Lister-Jones (her film Band Aid was one of the stand outs of IFFBoston 2017) about a party on the night an asteroid is about to obliterate Earth.
In addition to all of the feature films, there are several shorts programs (narrative, documentary and student) the festival has scheduled as well.

It’s 6am and Brandon woke me up when he got up to go to work so now... i answer asks bc i cant sleep.
Tumblr media
@mileyzangel said: Can you please make a Harley Quinn hairstyle from both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey?
I went and watched Birds of Prey the other night and it was really good. Brandon went to sleep I think tfgvhb. But I doubt I’ll try doing her hair from either of the films. @enriques4 is working on one for her Birds of Prey look if you are interested in that <3

Anonymous said: is tiny living worth it? im leaning towards the gameplay although i love cas. is the gameplay as bad as people say?
I honestly don’t think the new beds do anything. They’re... there. Lmao I think the CAS and buy items are very nice. If we get some cc murphy beds then that would make them a lot more usable tbh.

Anonymous said: how do you and ayoshi keep making some fantastic collabs?? y'all are literally the first people i go to when I make a fresh install and I can't wait to see what you do next
Anonymous said: AxA CC KINGS!!!
Anonymous said: you guys didnt have to snap like that on AxA
Anonymous said: I LOVE EVERY SINGLE PACK U AND AYOSHI DO PLEASE KEEP MAKING MORE
Anonymous said: another iconic ah00b x ayoshi collab YAS LESSGOOOO
We put a bunch of cc ideas (hair and clothes) in a discord server we have together and then work on the stuff together on call usually so each item is the way we both want me. Like for example i’ll be meshing the Ivy top while he works on texturing the ribbed version.  We also only do collabs when they happen, we didn’t plan AxA 2019 or this new set, mainly just made cc starting in May and wrapped it up in July to release in August. Then this time we started making stuff late December and got most of it done by the time I got done with my break. Having a planned collab/deadline makes stuff less stressful and the stuff usually turns out better imo

Anonymous said: hi! ur sims are so prettyyyy what skin texture and eyes do u use?
Anonymous said: hi! wcif the eyes of the sim in the edit that Dogsill edited for you please? thank you!
Anonymous said: Hi! I really love the way your sims looks so, I was what skin and eyes you use?
I actually am changing my default eyes so I need to update my resource page soon ;n; but the skins they use are all listed for each sim on the resource page here
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: you always name axa packs by the year but this one was named after a season those that mean.... 👀
We are wanting to do something in the fall, just not sure how our lives will be then ya know? There’s a chance that this will be the AxA 2020. Since we weren’t sure I didn’t want to label it that if 2 AxA’s release this year lmao
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: what game is the pokemon thing you're playing!? pls help a guy out i'm in love with the art style
Pokemon Sword and Shield (I have shield) for Nintendo Switch. I’ll prob post more pics once I get some new shinies :P
Tumblr media
@kristabunny said: lol is it bad that when I saw your Santana hair I read it as Satan Hair XD
tbhhhhh it was lowkey referencing that lmao. I made the hair in October for a speed meshing video and since it was around Halloween I was like “lemme give her an almost demonic name” also Santana from glee is a queen
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: Tbh I absolutely adore your female cc but I LIVE for your male cc!!!
Thank you! lmao the only thing I can take full credit for is the AxA male hairs. I mesh the clothes for packs but ayoshi does the texturing for them.
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: Could you have a go at the updo Dua Lipa has on the cover of her Future Nostalgia? The high bun with a flick in it and the strands of hair down the sides. Thanks if so :)
I’m not the biggest fan of the hairstyle tbh ;n; but we will see. (Physical is a serve, just saying)
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: So ive never played pokemon before until my friend gave me a copy of pokemon moon. I love cats so of course my starter was a litten, but i had no clue about evolutions or anything like that. I was heartbroken when my cute litten turned into some big man cat :(
omg noooo ;n; yeah Litten is a cutie... incineroar is... well I got used to him tbh and kind of like him now? I absolutely hate scorbunny’s evolution (and most of the SWSH starters final evolution) so I think that made incineroar slightly better in my eyes. My shiny litten will be staying a kitten however :)
Tumblr media
@multifandom-slytherin said: Hello! I love your cc! Would it be possible for you to make the bangs from your Bree Hair a separate accessory that you can put with other hairs (for example the BG low ponytail)? Thank you so much!
Anonymous said: have u considered making or allowing someone to make an acc version of your handmade bangs?
I have thought of doing accessory bangs tbh, I just like... don’t like using accessory bangs myself. So I’m not sure if I’ll end up doing it. I might try it for myself and see how many hairs they work with, and if it is a decent amount I’ll release.
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: First off I want to say how amazing all of your hairs and collabs are! Second I was curious if you ever thought of going back to your old hairs and updating their thumbnails / display indexes so they matched your stuff now?
I really really wanted to have all my 2019 hairs updated by 2020. It was only January 2019-April 2019 that needed updated (thumbnails and display indexes). But I just lost motivation for doing it. I will focus on it next time I have a big break from school. Also planning on updating select stuff from 2018 and 2017.
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: please put Sophia Barker in the gallery. PLEASEEEEE it's the most beautiful sim I EVER seen! >:3 PLEASEEE!!!!!!!!!!
She should be on there? I think? Make sure you have CC enabled and if you can’t find me through the gallery her tray files are here
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: Hi! After the recent patch I started having a small issue with Bree hair(without bangs), when I zoom out it looks like a completely different hair, something similar to that one basegame hair that's layered with tips pointed outward but longer. Thought I'd let you know, maybe others have had a similar issue or maybe I need to change a setting or something. Love your work so much!
Really surprised this is the first time someone told me about this lmao. The hair should be updated now on SFS/Patreon <3
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: I tried to look around for this on your "Asks" portion before bothering you (so sorry), but do you have a link perhaps for all the lips you use on your models? Are they in game or a cc you create? Thanks so much! Love all of your work! I'm super new to cc stuff and I found yours like 2 days ago and have been going nuts with downloads lol
like presets? None of my cc models use a lip preset. I do use this slider on some of them though. For lipsticks, that is listed for each model on my resource page <3
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: i’ve been looking for a hair like lexi that i actually like forever and now i find it but it’s for paterson peeps and i’m like actually broke and i’m like :/
im sorry ;n; at least it wasn’t too long of a wait? :/ I hope you liked the hair
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: I can't find your jisoo ponytails in your downloads?
they’re in my retired section... may they rest in peace. scroll to the bottom of my downloads and youll see ‘RETIRED.’ click that for the retired download page.
Tumblr media
@eclypt-0-sims said: Hi, I recently started making MM hair and I know you're probably an expert at this but; every time I go into CAS to test a hair, all of my accessories clip with the hair. Like the hair texture would cover some glasses if my sim was wearing glasses. I don't know how to fix it, someone told me to delete an eye weight in blender but I don't really understand weight painting that much, any suggestions? love your content btw
this is a late as hell reply i’m sorry. I think that you have texture where the glasses texture would be. Hair texture should only be in hair section or hat section (if you don’t want it hat compatible). Here is a UV map layout that I use for making hair textures. It shouldnt have anything to do with weights
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: Do you use reshade when you take previews for your cc? and also is the tropical punch ombre overlay a palette or did you make it?
I do use reshade when I take cc previews. It adds a bit of saturation to my sims and gives them some shadows under their chin/clothes. Nothing major. Also, myself and @imvikai came up with the tropical punch palette together.
Tumblr media
@little-eris said: You probably have answered this before but who drew your tumblr icon? I’ve seen the same art style with other simmers 👉🏼👈🏼 it’s super cute!
thank you! here is their twitter
Tumblr media
Anonymous said: The male sim in your Tiny Living review looks soo familiar; was there inspiration from anyone IRL? The person he reminds me of isn't even famous so I don't even know! He is very pretty though *-*
He was a gallery sim that I just revamped a bit so I’m honestly not super sure lmao. But he is very attractive yes I agree
Tumblr media
that concludes this ask ceremony please collect your things and move to the exit to your left. fvghbjn if you sent something I didn’t answer and it was off anon I’ll get to you soon (person who asked what beards I used for AxA... I see you)

Birds of Prey (Or, Men Suck: An Action Movie!)
Before 2019’s Captain Marvel or 2017’s Wonder Woman had the opportunity to be smash successes, Margot Robbie’s turn as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, a character that was equal parts bad-assery, sadism, and unabashed sexuality, was the closest the comic book movie world had to a genuine female star. And, yes, that’s a direct knock on ScarJo’s Black Widow. Given the character’s popularity, Robbie’s interest in playing the character, the Me Too movement, and the subsequent success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, a Harley Quinn movie was somewhat inevitable. The marketing for the film made it quite clear that Quinn’s new movie, Birds of Prey, aimed to rise far above the ashes of its predecessor. The previews advertised Quinn literally killing off the Joker (and symbolically cutting ties with one of the most complained-about aspects of Suicide Squad) by blowing up an ACE Chemicals building with Joker presumably inside. It was the location in the previous film where the Quinn and Joker’s relationship was born. This seemed like a bold, exciting jumping-off point for the film. Combined with its striking art design and lengthy sub-title (Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) the movie had me excited to watch a spirited indictment of the patriarchy under the guise of a comic book movie. That’s mostly what I got.
The movie indeed starts with an effectively brief animation detailing Harley’s life up to that point: haunted by her abandonment by her father and raised by harsh nuns, Harley’s need for male approval and hate of the establishment were finally realized when she met the Joker, a man for whom she cast aside her MD/PhD in psychology for a life of crime. But she gets tired of doing all the work and planning for Mr. J., but receiving none of the credit. It’s here you’d expect some big fight between Joker and Harley culminating in the explosion from the trailer. But the trailer was deceiving. We don’t see the fight. We just see Quinn’s reaction to being dumped by the Joker in a manner similar to how break-ups are portrayed in thousands of other pieces of fiction: crying hysterically, getting belligerently drunk, getting a pet, and denying that the break-up even happened. All this onscreen activity is accompanied by constant narration from Quinn who, instead of telling the truth about her pain and insecurities, lies and brags about her strength and maturity in dealing with the situation. When she ultimately decides to blow up ACE Chemicals, it is not an attempt to fight back against her abuser, but is instead her response to hearing other women talk shit about how she will likely go running back to the Joker. Blowing up the building doesn’t kill Joker (he’s not even present); it was just an immature, symbolic gesture to let the Joker know that she wasn’t coming back to him (like he would even care).
This rather weak portrayal of Quinn stands in stark contrast to the character as portrayed in the pilot of the recent animated show Harley Quinn. Interestingly, the show has Harley, who has recently been left for dead by the Joker, empower herself to leave the Joker. Yet, the portrayal at the start of Birds of Prey is intentional. It paves the way for eventual growth. It wouldn’t be much of a movie if she achieved her emancipation in the first five minutes. Plus, it perfectly falls in line with the relationship and characters established in Suicide Squad. There, Quinn and Joker were a couple madly in love, always desperately trying to get back to one another. Still, by shying away from the truth and horrors of the abuse Quinn suffered from the Joker and instead choosing to couch her abuse as “not getting credit/appreciation,” the movie weakens her power, strength, and growth in character. Her emancipation becomes less an empowered victory over abuse and misogyny and more just escaping the shadow of her arrogant boyfriend. This is unfortunate as symbolically it is satisfying that even Quinn’s first step towards independence, blowing up the ACE chemical building, is met with punishment and the assumption by male society that she can no longer defend herself. Seemingly every other bad guy in Gotham City knew to interpret the explosion exactly as Harley intended, and now they all seek vengeance for Miss Quinn’s many misdeeds, now that she lacks the protection of Mr. J.
The actual plot for the movie focuses on its villain, Ramon “Black Mask” Sionis, the epitome of white male privilege but without the confidence, a wealthy billionaire man-child so insecure he lashes out violently in response to the smallest insult. Sionis is trying to acquire the film’s MacGuffin, a diamond, on the exact same day all of Gotham’s underbelly, including Sionis, is out for Quinn’s head. The diamond is inadvertently pickpocketed by Cassandra Cain, a teenaged, female ne’er-do-well (Ella Jay Basco) who, like Quinn, is the victim of abuse and abandonment and has now turned to thievery to get by. For reasons I won’t spoil, Cassandra is unable to part ways with the diamond, so the hunt for the diamond becomes the hunt for Cassandra. It’s a hunt that involves multiple female protagonists. There’s Detective Montoya (Rosie Perez), a veteran detective trying to make a criminal case against Sionis. There’s Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), a singer in Sionis’s nightclub whom he forces to be his personal driver and errand-girl. And then there’s the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a cross-bow-wielding bad-ass who actually isn’t after Sionis at all but is just kinda there on her own, separate revenge scheme. And, of course, Quinn inevitably gets involved in the hunt as well.
But for as much as the plot is about acquiring the diamond and escaping Sionis and his goons, it really is a film about female empowerment. The patriarchy, its inherent misogyny and perpetuation of rape culture, is the true villain. And emancipation from the grips of patriarchy is ultimately desired by all its female protagonists, not just Quinn. Detective Montoya is constantly passed up for promotions at work for decades even though she’s the brain by many successful operations. Black Canary, a Black woman, has an arc that combines misogyny with racism as she is forced into near slavery by Sionis (a white male who refers to her as “his little bird” and, not so subtly, “owns” an extensive collection of shrunken African heads). Her arc is my favorite in the film. And then there’s Huntress who… well, she’s just doing her own revenge thing, man. Like she’s killing dudes and stuff, but it’s hard to really link her with the deep anti-patriarchy themes the other three protagonists have. But where the movie really elevates itself beyond the sort of surface-level “girl power!” (that the Huntress unfortunately sorta represents) is in its willingness to be honest and nuanced about the brutality of sexual assault, even in the small degree it does address it.
Twice, Quinn finds herself incapacitated while being directly threatened by a man. The first occurs after her post-break-up binge-drinking night out where on the verge on consciousness, she is being caressed and fondled by a man in an alley and nearly kidnapped (and presumably raped) by two men. In the second instance, she’s hit with a paralytic agent. Her assailant crouches down next to her, puts her arm around his neck. “You’re still conscious,” he says to himself, as if reassuring himself like a man about to rape a drunk girl on the drink of consciousness. It’s rather disturbing and powerful to see our protagonist who is, in every sense of the phrase, a bad-ass be just as susceptible to be raped and taken advantage of as any other woman in society. No one is safe, and she’s not alone. There’s another rather difficult scene where the movie’s villain, Ramon Sionis, forces an innocent female patron at his night club, under the threat of death, to strip and dance on top of a table in front of the whole club. These are powerful and scary scenes that generally aren’t a part of superhero movies. No doubt, the success and nuance of the scenes is due to the fact that the movie is directed by a woman, Cathy Yan, written by a woman, Christina Hodson, and produced mainly by women (including the star Margot Robbie herself). If allowed to explore these issues more deeply, it would have been a fantastic film.
Still, this movie is not intended to be a deep, serious dive against real issues women face; I recognize its an action-focused comic book movie. And to that degree, the movie is mostly a success. It’s a fun movie with clever, visually-stunning action sequences. I was floored by its use of color (of purples, reds, and blues particularly) throughout all the fight scenes. There’s an extremely satisfying scene where Quinn infiltrates a police station with a gun that shoots out what looks like bean bags that release colorful dust/confetti upon impact. And the final battle scene in an abandoned boardwalk’s funhouse featured one of the most creative set pieces for an action movie this side of Temple of Doom, replete of trampolines, mirrors, and gripping melee combat (with mallets, bats, and kicks to the groin, instead of the often-more boring-shoot-outs.)
I really cannot say enough good things about the visual style of the film or its tightly choreographed fight scenes. Less good things can be said about scenes that do no feature fighting/action. McGregor as Sionis is fine, but Sionis is an uninteresting villain, and his over-the-top childish nature is boring to watch. The movie would have been better served by a villain like Jason Schwartzman’s Gideon from Scott Pilgrim vs the World, a well-respected, successful, confident, misogynistic tool, rather than the insecure mess seen here. Also, Ella Jay Basco as the teenaged pickpocket Cassandra is not a great actress and there was little chemistry between her and Robbie. This is unfortunate since the movie aims to cast Harley as Cassandra’s new foster-mother to highlight Quinn’s growth and this sequence takes up a good chunk of the middle of the film. I did like how the film explored the idea that Harley Quinn, though a “super villain,” is a normal person who needs to get groceries like the rest of us. Scenes like these helped to make Quinn more sympathetic but were largely hampered by bad dialogue.
Furthermore, are we just going to ignore that Harley handed Cassandra a bomb with a lit fuse, giving Cassandra no choice but to throw the bomb out a car window thereby killing one of their assailants?! Cassandra cannot be more than 15 years old, but the movie does nothing to explore what this obviously traumatic situation does to Cassandra. I’ll buy the film’s excuse that she has a penchant for pickpocketing as a consequence of her social circumstances… but you can’t tell me that she would have no second thoughts/trauma about killing another human being! Sorry, that’s the pediatrician in me getting out.
So yeah, I liked the movie. It’s not great, but it ain’t bad. Its weak dialogue and weak villain are made up for by the film’s great visuals and its absolute commitment to doing right by its themes, even approaching serious issues with nuance and grace, something that would never have happened if a bunch of dudes crafted this picture. And even if the first hour isn’t great, most of my complaints washed away in the last half hour when all the female protagonists finally join together and that awesome funhouse battle takes place. Further, it is satisfying to see that Harley Quinn really does change throughout the film. In defeating Sionis, she is able to finally free herself from the Joker, but also from all the men who assumed she was nothing more than the Joker’s bitch. The movie doesn’t leave much room for a sequel which in itself is refreshing. It tells a complete tale. Still, I’d happily seek to watch more of these birds of prey having been let out of their cages, free to take on more of patriarchy.

Research summary
For assessment1 I decided to make some buildings that I am more interested in. I did some research on these types of buildings and some modeling tips.
I positioned the theme of this work as a non-existent fantasy architecture. This building is based on ancient Chinese architecture and was created and designed in the structure and color scheme of its houses. The environment is a fairyland of clouds and mist. At the center of the scene is the fantasy building, which is built on a larger floating island in the center, surrounded by smaller islands. The island is made of stone and has some greenery on it. I will focus my production on the center building, with the surrounding island stones as a background. The viewer's eyes will pass by the different shapes of the stones and finally fall on the main building.
I chose this theme because of the variety of forms and styles of ancient Chinese architecture. There were majestic cities, majestic tombs, glorious palaces and beautiful woodland gardens, these ancient buildings full of national characteristics were the mother lode that nourished the ever-growing Chinese culture. This glorious architectural heritage is the source of living water for modern painting, architecture, sculpture and game design. As far as game scene design is concerned, the diverse architectural elements of ancient China are an inexhaustible treasure trove for designers. Looking back at the history of Chinese architecture, although ancient Chinese architecture can be simply categorized into four styles: solemn monument type, graceful and noble palace type, friendly residential type and poetic and picturesque garden type, there are many types when subdivided. If we divide them according to regional styles, the natural conditions of each place are quite different, and in addition, there is a strong enclosed nature between regions (especially in mountainous areas and minority areas), so the architecture of each place and each nationality shows its own characteristics, and the styles are quite different from each other, showing distinct regional characteristics such as northern style, southern style and inner Mongolian style(Chen & Wang 2013, p. 1).
The architectural styles were very different during different periods. There are three representative styles: 1.Qin and Han styles: Qin Shi Huang unified the six kingdoms and became a powerful state. In order to consolidate his rule and show the imperial authority, Chinese architecture also entered the era of grandeur. There was the "overwhelming" A-Fang Palace and the massive Shanglin Yuan. In addition, there was the Great Wall, which "meandered for more than ten thousand miles". From the architecture alone, one can see the imperial atmosphere of Qin as a unified great power. During the Han dynasty, the architecture was more magnificent and the styles were more diverse. Representative buildings include the Chang'an City, Weiyang Palace, Jianzhang Palace, Shanglingyuan and many ritual buildings. Palace imposing, and after the court and some of the ritual building and elegant, free, euphemistic beauty(Deng & Bai 2012, p. 1300). Sui and Tang styles: Similar to the Qin and Han dynasties, the achievements of Sui and Tang architecture were closely related to the political and economic development of the time, mainly reflected in the construction of the imperial palace. The architecture is like a mirror, the Chang'an City, the Daming Palace and other gigantic and magnificent buildings, will be the Tang Dynasty most vividly reflected. Its architectural fusion of classical Chinese and Western architectural elements is a vivid portrayal of the economic prosperity and social openness of the time. In addition, there were also some religious buildings, which were the spiritual home of people.3. Ming and Qing styles: Regarding the architectural styles of this period, domestic studies on architectural history and art history have already made a comprehensive overview, and this paper absorbs its excellent results and summarizes them as follows: the important architectural activities and changes in this period were reflected in the construction of the metropolis of the Yuan Dynasty and the Beijing of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the Ming and Qing Dynasties reached the last peak of traditional Chinese architecture. It presents an image of a concise form and cumbersome details. As the proportion of the dou-arch is reduced, the depth of eaves is reduced, the proportion of columns is slender, the birth, side feet and rolls are no longer used, the proportion of beams is heavy, and the soft lines of the roof disappear, thus presenting a restrained but rigorous style, the building form is refined, and the symbolism is enhanced.
In order to create a wonderland-like feel, the atmosphere of the scene is a worthwhile study. Scene design includes the design of the physical space and the design of the psychological space. The physical space is the concrete representation of the game designer's simulated worldview in the game scene. The designer can both simulate the real world in the modeling and create his own imaginary space. However, when creating physical space, it is mainly a matter of using some design techniques, and it is easier to express physical space than mental space. In the design of this scene, the physical space must break through the real world to create a space and visual experience that is completely different from the real world to highlight the fantasy atmosphere of Wonderland. The psychological space is difficult to express, it is a space that the viewer can feel but does not exist, because this space is difficult to produce and express, so the designer is required to have a deeper understanding of the expression of the scene, and some design skills and the integration of various elements of the scene, and then integrated into the scene design.
Color factor, material factor, light and shadow factor are the key factors in creating atmosphere in scene design(Huang 2016, p. 2). Color factors in the design of space atmosphere can effectively mobilize the emotions of the viewer. Bright colors can show a relaxed and cheerful space atmosphere, while cool colors often create a gloomy, tense and frightening space atmosphere. Through different color performance can design a different space atmosphere, color has an important role in mobilizing emotions. In scene design, the embodiment of material factor needs to be carried by concrete objects; and the abstraction of material factor makes it not as intuitive and obvious as color factor in the performance of spatial atmosphere. However, in scene design, material factors have a key role in expressing the texture of objects and are also important factors in scene design. The creation of space atmosphere cannot be separated from the light and shadow factor. Reasonable use of light and shadow can enhance the perspective effect of the scene itself, light and shadow is also an important factor in driving the visual center of the viewer. Light strength, weakness, cold, warm, large, small, smooth, reverse, different choices and combinations can create an orderly space level. Reverse light can effectively open up the depth of space, and warm light through its soft light performance can create a warm, quiet atmosphere of space. Thus, different light and shadow effects can not only enrich the scene, but also make up for the lack of spatial atmosphere.
In order to show a better effect, I made physical models to determine the approximate location. The main modeling methods applied are data modeling techniques, IS planning techniques, structured design and analysis methods, object-oriented methods, and Business modeling methods(Anderson & Fu 2017). In addition to proper modeling, the use of animation split-screen is also very important. In the film and television animation production process, the split-screen script design belongs to the preliminary screen design work, is very important and can not be omitted. A good animation or film, there must be qualified sub-scenes script design. It is not only a preview of the film and television animation, but also a director's manual in the middle of the animation process, and can be used as a reference for post-production editing.
These are my investigations on assement1, including the background of the scene, techniques for creating the atmosphere for scene modeling, and modeling techniques. Learn about the academic background of scene modeling while learning about modeling.

Evanescence Return With Heavy, Soulful New Single ‘Wasted on You’
Band will release first album of original music in nine years, The Bitter Truth, later this year
Evanescence have previewed their first album of original music in nine years with new single, “Wasted on You.” The group’s fifth album, The Bitter Truth, will be released later this year.
“Wasted on You” starts off slow and soulful, with singer Amy Lee detailing a relationship that keeps pulling her under. “I don’t need drugs/I’m already six feet low/I’m wasted on you/Waiting for the bitter truth,” she belts in her signature soprano. The song builds heavier and heavier, with the full band bringing their familiar gothic metal sound as it carries on.
“We were recording this music right up until we couldn’t go into the studio anymore, and finished it remotely through file sharing and phone calls,” Lee said in a statement. “Tweaking mixes, adding background vocals, creating the video and album art all from home has been like water in the desert for me, my light in a dark time. We are still writing and have a lot more work to do on this album, but this time we wanted to release the songs individually, as we create, to live more in the moment with our fans and our music.”
The “Wasted on You” video was filmed entirely in isolation, featuring somber shots of the band at their respective homes following stay-at-home orders. They can be seen performing their parts of the song while taking socially distant walks and disinfecting their groceries.
Evanescence’s last metal album was their 2011 self-titled LP, which featured singles “What You Want” and “My Heart Is Broken.” Following Evanescence, Lee pursued solo projects. She collaborated with Dave Eggar on Aftermath, the 2014 soundtrack for the film War Story and followed the soundtrack with the EP Recover, Vol. 1, a collection of covers. Her first official solo LP was 2016’s Dream Too Much, a children’s album that featured a combination of original music and covers.
In 2017, Evanescence returned, releasing orchestral album Synthesis, which was also their first on new label BMG. The album mostly featured reworked versions of their old music, like breakthrough single, “Bring Me to Life.” The band marked their return to rock last November with a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” They were due to go on tour this year, but the dates have been postponed until at least this fall due to the ongoing pandemic.

Good Stuff's Best of 2019
WARNING: Just wanted to say cheers to you for making it through another year. I send you best wishes for next year to be fruitful. Thank you, take care out there, and enjoy. (Best of 2017) (Best of 2018)
Dedicated to Russi Taylor, John Witherspoon, Rip Torn, Tartar Sauce, Caroll Spinney, Peter Matthews, and the many of KyoAni lost in the arson incident. You all did wonderful; rest in peace.
Welp, I figured the last year of this decade would be the most chaotic one by far, then again everything peak after 2012. As for now, I am counting down the best cartoons/animations/comics I’ve seen and loved this year in no particular order other than #1. Same rules apply: No sneak previews of future projects, no repeats, and this time anything goes.
Runner Ups: Superman Smashes the Klan, Marvel’s Aero, Infinity Train, Enter the Florpus, Amphibia, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart, Helluva Boss, Meta Runner, Lego Movie 2, Forky Asks a Question
Anyways, Badda boom bang whiz, let’s do this shizz...
10. Super Mario Bros GT
Tumblr media
Nostalgia can be quite a mystery, especially one that can come out of nowhere. Super Mario Bros Z kicked so much ass as a kid that now, it still frustrates me to this that it got a cease & desist from Nintendo, even the reboot from the same person couldn’t last long. But the gods have offered a slight miracle in the form of this new spiritual successor that has heart and soul put into every pixelated frame. There is much to celebrate with Youtube animation, where many say it’s dying due to the algorithm and all of the site’s corporate bullshit, but it’s stuff like this which helps me understand why we should celebrate. Against all odds, channels like Smasher Block willfully put their works out their for the people and continues to because on top of getting a little dough, it’s what they want to do.
9. DC SUPER HERO GIRLS (2019)
Tumblr media
Awwwwww yeah, this is She-Ra and the Princesses of Power done right. Diverse female squad, each given a quality screen time to truly shine (Beecher especially) on their which makes the episodes where they’re all together feel earned and joyous to watch. Certainly reminds me of Friendship is Magic, which is coincidental since they were created by the same woman. I’d like to think this and MLP G4 were the answers to Faust’s cancelled project Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls where multiple personalities collide to one extraordinary superhero team of girls capable great feats that are lifted from their insecurities or drawbacks. And on top of this being a fun series to kick back to all around, it’s a comforting, somewhat aspiring thought to consider.
8. JOKER
Tumblr media
I am somebody that rarely goes to the theaters to watch a film; you have to hook my tight just for me to even think of buying a ticket, no less plan to. But honestly, Joker was worth the hype, the ticket, and the fact that it wasn’t the incel uprising that buttfuck normies tried to make it out as. It’s lower on the list because in thought, there definitely could’ve been some tweaks to the dialogue and a couple scenes that I felt didn’t work in the long run. But really, this movie to me worked because of the escalation that leads to a cathartic climax and ending that left me in actual tears. I don’t give a shit if it “doesn’t fit”, having Frank Sinatra sing the film's credits put me in shambles. Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal as Arthur, and this movie felt authentic in its many details. This is definitely up there with my favorite comic book films of all time. Good thing, too, Spider-Man was taking up most of that shelf.
7. TUCA & BERTIE
Tumblr media
This series being what I can’t help but say is a spin-off to Bojack Horseman, a show I respect, was enough to pull me into watching it. But it being like Bojack where it’s tight-roping between a bouncy comedy and a grounded drama was what kept me around for more. It is a damn shame this was cancelled after one season (while 13 Reasons Why gets FOUR seasons like what the fuck), because while this did feel enough like a complete series, I was certainly interested for more because I really enjoyed it all. I have my issue with a couple choices in the show, but I am sure this series would’ve addressed them later down the line. I can see why some women would find this personally endearing, it felt like the personal stories of actual people, and it deserved better. Either way, I enjoyed this series and I recommend it just as much as Bojack.
6. PRIMAL
Tumblr media
Genndy Tartakovsky is that kind of cartoon creator where you feel he’ll go beyond if you give him the right amount of space. He’s not a perfectionist like John “Dirty Diddler” Kricfalusi, but with things like Hotel Transylvania and Samurai Jack, he certainly has proven to have the range in animation where you know how he plays. Primal showcasing his noted skill in dialogue-less storytelling and dynamic action scenes, able to convey everything clear with its ruthless yet careful protagonist and his dinosaur friend, all on top of the most luscious backgrounds. This is a series that definitely feels like Genndy’s taken what he’s used from his previous works and putting it together for a brutal yet passionate look at the prehistoric life. He truly brought us an adult series to enjoy and to look forward to more in the coming year.
5. SPINEL
Tumblr media
Bet you didn’t expect a character to be on this list, eh? Spinel is the best thing to come out of Steven Universe in general; makes me wish she was in a better movie. The crew certainly did their darndest to make her not only an enjoyable and connectable character through and through, but a very versatile character that the fandom could take in any which way. Call it corny, but Spinel perfectly represents SU as a whole: a lovable goof that can certainly mean business but deep down is deserved of a hug because of what she’s gone through. Wish she had a more satisfying resolution in her respective debut, but really it’s the balance between those three elements mentioned that makes Spinel almost eternally wonderful.
4. MOB PSYCHO 100 II
Tumblr media
As someone that doesn’t like reading, I’m a firm believer that the best animations or visual medias elevate the writing to a memorable degree; the visuals hook to the point where you want to think about what you saw and how it was conveyed. Mob Psycho 100, for two seasons now, does this in spades where Studio Bones throw them bones in animating one of the most dynamic animes of the modern era, providing the writing and characters a proper chance to flex its muscles. The characters are especially what makes this and MP100 as a whole work so well, the story being about a boy learning to be more sociable as well as emotionally stronger all while helping others understand maturity and empathy. For more on this, I recommend Hiding in Public’s video(s) on Mob. But with the animation, Bones was able to provide a sense of impact and immersion to the moments that matter, not making it an overstimulating mess, and putting some respect on ONE’s webcomic art style.
3. KLAUS
Tumblr media
Hands down, this is a great Christmas movie. Take away the animation and you have a charming, wanna say ground and authentic, story about the makings of Santa Claus. With memorable and likable characters, a nice escalation in terms of the plot, and moments that are/can be so satisfying, they can bring you to tears. A couple overdone tropes in the road that doesn’t make this the most perfected story, but those sincerely minor compared to everything else that makes this story the best. Now. Add in the animation, and you have a gold, nay a platinum animated story of the year where the visuals definitely enhance the story to a degree where they’re undoubtedly inseparable. The visuals alone is enough to check this movie out and it’s eye-opening when you learn of how it’s all done. Klaus is a film that did it’s job and then some, and I hope this will be well remembered as a classic holiday film for it deserves that status.
2. BEASTARS
Tumblr media
I’ll be fair, I’m mostly referring to the manga and not the anime but since the anime premiered this fall, it counts. Because be it the anime or the series overall, Beastars has such well intricate world building all while offering a little something for everyone (violence, romance, slice of life). The story is well paced and even when we aren’t focusing on the main characters momentarily, Itagaki is surprisingly able to make every supporting/side character we come across memorable in their own way; like I said before, the city is much a character in this story. Oh yeah, and the mangaka is the daughter of Keisuke “Grappler Baki” Itagaki, that in itself is a treasuring bit of trivia for this. Everything about Beastars is enticing and Studio Orange certainly helped in giving this series more of a following.
1. GREEN EGGS & HAM
Tumblr media
Well, well, well. Guess Netflix is three for three in terms of bringing its best foot forward among its few steps back each year. The best term to describe this series is surprising. Surprising that this is a Dr. Seuss story that got expanded a 13 episode series, that has fleshed out characters, fun hijinks, an easy story, lovely emotional, more quieter moments... on top of being 2D hand drawn animated. I mean, what else is there to say? Green Eggs and Ham is to Dr. Seuss what Seven was for Final Fantasy, what Friendship is Magic was for MLP, what watermelon was before a nice menthol cigarette. This definitely took the top spot because to me, it was able to bring many good elements from the previous entries and knot it all together into a well kept bow that I never knew I wanted until now. I’m genuinely glad this show got to exist the way it is and I am hoping, praying, that the second season keeps that momentum up.
That leads us to the actual number one which is
1. STEVEN UNIVERSE FUT-
Tumblr media
Total Dramarama is now the two time World Heavyweight Champion, babey. Will 2020 give us a quality contender? Will the streak last another year?
Stay tuned, and always seek out the Good Stuff.

Fall into film: 2017 Fall Arts film preview
Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Horror Fest, Riverdale's Art House Day offer something for all.
For whatever reason, Arkansas's cinema cup seems to have runneth over in recent years, and I'm not talking about the 84-ounce, $7 bladderbuster you can buy at your local theater. From the long-running Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival to the long-mourned Little Rock Film Festival, to still newish offerings like the Bentonville Film Festival and the Arkansas Cinema Society, film buffs have a lot to be thankful for. That's especially so in the fall of the year, when a lot of the more brilliant stars in the state's silver screen firmament come out to shine. The biggest news in Arkansas film this fall is the 26th annual Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, which runs Oct. 6-15. Always a draw for lovers of nonfiction shorts and features, the HSDFF has a few extra reasons to celebrate this year. Its opening night film, for example, is "LADDIE: The Man Behind the Movies." The feature documentary, which includes commentary from luminaries like Mel Brooks and Morgan Freeman, is director Amanda Ladd's tribute to her father, the great film producer Alan Ladd Jr., who emerged from the shadow of his own famous father to carve out his bit of Hollywood greatness by producing a host of classic films, including "Alien," "Blade Runner," "Star Wars," "Braveheart," "Young Frankenstein," "Chariots of Fire" and "Police Academy." Kathleen Turner, the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning star of such films as "Romancing the Stone," "Peggy Sue Got Married," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and the Ladd-produced "Body Heat" will be on hand in Hot Springs to introduce the film and serve as the festival's honorary co-chair. The HSDFF has managed to score another big-name draw in booking an appearance by the masterful doc director Werner Herzog, director of such classics of the genre as "Grizzly Man," "Cave of Forgotten Dreams," "Encounters at the End of the World," and others. The festival hasn't announced whether Herzog will be screening a film, but meeting one of the great directors of our time is worth the price of admission, whatever he's going to do. Those are only two highlights of a festival with a slate of over 50 international documentaries — many with their filmmakers in attendance — plus parties and panel discussions and all manner of things to delight a cinephile. Ticket prices range from $10 for a single screening to $300 for an all-inclusive pass with priority admission. Visit hsdfi.org for more information.
Another light of Hot Springs film, though a decidedly darker one, is the Hot Springs Horror Film Festival, which rips into its fifth year of scares Sept. 21-24. The festival features over 50 shorts and features, from the eerie to the blood-drenched, with filmmakers on hand to discuss many of the films. Guest speakers include Bob Sheen — grandson of film and TV star Martin Sheen and the son of Mr. "Winning!" himself — who will be on hand to screen his horror film "The Rake." If you're into forensic investigation, a must-see attendee is Joseph Scott Morgan, who has appeared on shows across the cable spectrum to comment on cases ranging from the Jon Benet Ramsey murder to the Zodiac Killer. Tickets for the festival range from a $25 day pass to $55 for a full weekend badge. Festival sponsor Hot Springs Hotel and Spa is offering discounted rates for the weekend. For more information, visit the festival website at hot springshorrorfilmfestival.com
Another promising film event coming up soon is Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema's Art House Theater Day, starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24. The five-picture mini-festival features some real gems, including "Stairway to Heaven" (1946), about a man who, thanks to a heavenly mix-up, survives a fall from a plane without a parachute. The film stars David Niven with Kim Hunter, Kathleen Byron and Sir Richard Attenborough. Also on the bill is the rarely seen 1967 documentary "Titicut Follies." An unflinching look at the conditions inside the Massachusetts State Prison for the Criminally Insane at Bridgewater, Mass., the film was one of several late-'60s efforts that led to reforms in the treatment of the mentally ill. Fans of foreign film will want to catch director Dmitri Kalashnikov's "The Road Movie." Created entirely from clips shot via automobile dashcams, the film captures surprising scenes of life in Russia, including the chaos following the assassination of a dissident leader and tanks rolling through a car wash. For more information on Riverdale's Art House Theater Day or to buy tickets, hit its website at riverdale10.com.
While it doesn't have any new events scheduled yet, another group to keep an eye on is the new Arkansas Cinema Society. The society, founded by Arkansas-born director Jeff Nichols ("Mud," "Take Shelter," "Midnight Special") and Kathryn Tucker ("Glee," "40," "Oblivion"), held its first festival Aug. 24-26. It was definitely a down payment on great things to come, bringing big name actor Adam Driver, who stars as "Star Wars" villain Kylo Ren, to town, along with up-and-coming director David Lowery ("Pete's Dragon," "Ghost Story") and producer Noah Stahl, whose film "Patti Cake$" was a Sundance hit. Check out the ACS website at arkansascinemasociety.org and follow its Facebook page to stay up to date on the society's future offerings.

'I Want You For You' by Isabelle Fries and Seth Baer is Pure Gold
Isabelle and Seth issued a joint statement about what this song means to them, “Music has the power to bring people together, and this collaboration is an example. This song is meaningful to us because it puts a positive message into the world about the importance of seeing people for their heart and soul and not for their status or exterior.”

ENJOY THE BEST OF GLOBAL CINEMA AT MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL GEMS 2018
By Rafa Carvajal & Michael Bustamante
Tumblr media
The fourth annual Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival GEMS 2018 is set to take place October 11-14 at MDC's Tower Theater Miami. This exceptional festival is a fall extension of the annual, internationally-renowned Miami Film Festival that will celebrate its 36th edition March 1-10, 2019. Wire Magazine has sponsored and covered the GEMS film festival since its inception, and year after year the films have been true gems. If you haven't been to this festival, make sure you purchase tickets to watch some of the films this year because the lineup is outstanding. To buy tickets, visit gems2018.miamifilmfestival.com.
Miami Film Festival GEMS 2018 will be broken down into two distinct sections, The Spotlight Stage and The Discovery Stage. The Spotlight Stage will feature high-profile, major-interest films from internationally renowned directors. The Discovery Stage will feature new filmmakers creating some of the year's most interesting debut work. The opening night film of GEMS 2018 on Oct. 11 will be Birds of Passage. Co-director Cristina Gallego will attend and participate in a conversation with the audience. Gallego received Colombia's first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film back in 2015 for her collaboration with her filmmaking partner Ciro Guerra on Embrace of the Serpent, and hopes to give Colombia its second ever nomination with Birds of Passage.
This year, acclaimed Spanish actress Bárbara Lennie will be accepting the Festival's Precious Gem Award in recognition for her incredible cinematic achievements prior to the showing of her newest film, Petra, directed by Jaime Rosales. Lennie will also join Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, and Ricardo Darín in Oscar-winning Director Asghar Farhadi's latest film, Everybody Knows. Cinematographer Diego García will receive the Art of Light Award before the Florida premiere of Wildlife, starring Cary Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal. García will participate in a conversation about his craft prior to the film. Additionally, he will lead a Master Class on Cinematography for attending local industry members and film students. Some of García's previous credits include his Fenix Award-winning work on Gabriel Mascaro's Neon Bull, and previous Miami Film Festival selections Cemetery of Splendor (2015) and The Darkness (2017).
Tumblr media
The virtual reality (VR) sidebar, in partnership with MDC's Miami Animation & Gaming International Complex (MAGIC), will return to GEMS for the second year in a row. This cutting edge exhibition will include five projects of VR, 360° video technology and Alternative Gaming, and will be available throughout the entire weekend. Some highlights include Swamp Scapes and Big Huggin'.
To preview this year's GEMS, we sat down with Director Cristina Gallego from the opening night film, Birds of Passage.
Rafa Carvajal: Who are the main actors in the film and what roles do they portray? Cristina Gallego: Carmiña Martínez: Ursula (the mother), Natalia Reyes: Zaida (the daughter), Geider Meza: Leonidas (the son), José Acosta: Rapayet (the son in law), Jhon Narváez: Moncho (the alijuna/the foreigner), Juan Bautista: Anibal (the cousin), and José Vicente Cotes: Peregrino (the word messenger).
RC: What was your favorite part of directing the film? CG: The editing.
RC: What were your biggest challenges directing Birds of Passage? CG: Creating the complexity in the relationships of a big amount of the characters, and trying to bring the audience inside the tragedy in a way that they can feel and understand how we feel about narcotraffic.
RC: What is the main message of the film, and why is it so important? CG: For me, it's about the disconnect between the real and intuitive world and how much we don't hear this part of us. The conflict between tradition and modernity is reflected in the way we perceive the world.
RC: What would you like audience members to walk away with after seeing Birds of Passage? CG: I think the actual reception is the one that we wanted for the film. The audience goes out, moving, knowing the other side of the history, questioning their role in its history.
Tumblr media
RC: Tell us about your background, your experience directing films and how you became a director. CG: I was a creative producer for around 16 years, with creative concerns that became stronger with the time, especially in the previous process with Ciro – my creative partner and ex-husband. I studied cinema, but as soon as I began to work I focused to become a producer. I started to feel that the border between being a producer and director had started to blur, especially in Embrace of the Serpent, when I explored that creative role deeper. When I realized that, I was producing more for the role that society gave to women. I also realized that we needed to help, take care and carry, but I also realized that I have the need to create, communicate, and that my point of view is giving a complex and new way to see. I started to have confidence that I didn't have before, and I began to share my desire with Ciro of co-directing the film. To give a gender twist to the gangster character, traditionally told from a male perspective.
RC: Describe Birds of Passage in three words. CG: Power breaking tradition.
RC: What are you looking forward to the most about participating in GEMS 2018? CG: For us, the important thing with festivals is to penetrate the minds of the audience as much as possible. We feel that the world needs to know the drug trafficking history from our point of view as Colombians. Particularly the history we share with Miami – the other side of the necrotrophic was here (the consumption and U.S. distribution). Miami and Colombia changed forever in the '70s with the arrival of this new business that brought an enormous change in the city, but also with the arrival of the violence and the drug war.

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH GERI-NIKOLE LOVE
Tumblr media
Geri-Nikole Love has tuned her passions into a career and beautiful lifestyle – one full of art, giving back, and staying active. It hadn’t been a childhood dream, but life can be full of surprise and opportunity (as well as hard work). Born in England, Love grew up in Florida and Georgia, before moving to New York City to complete her BFA in Theatre at NYU. She currently lives in Los Angeles.
You have an extensive background in (and love for) theatre! When did this passion first take hold for you, and what do you most enjoy about performing on the stage?
In high school I auditioned for the Governor's Honors Program in Georgia. I was accepted into the program as a drama major and had the opportunity to study acting on a university campus for the summer prior to my junior year. For the first time, I wasn’t just putting on a play at school. We were studying the history of theatre, acting methods and human (including personal) observation. After that summer, I became very aware that acting is a craft that can be studied, explored, and developed. Since I could remember, I had always wanted to be a lawyer and prior to that summer my long dream of becoming an attorney had morphed into a fascination with forensic pathology. However, after that program I knew that all I wanted to do was study acting.
When it comes to theatre, there is nothing like the rehearsal process, previews, opening night, a live audience and the journey you get to go on through a run of exploring a character. I’ve fallen in love with on-camera, but theatre will always be my first love.
Tell us about the shift to working in film and TV. Did it come naturally, and did you always have an ambition to do projects beyond the stage?
I spent a lot of my youth moving around. I went to over 8 different grade schools before moving to Atlanta. Coming out of a BFA drama program, there was a big push to do regional theatre, and by this point NYC was the longest I’d ever lived anywhere. It felt more like home than anywhere else I had lived, so to leave just didn’t sit right with me at the time. I had also established myself as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor, which was a huge accomplishment, in one of the toughest cities in the world. Packing all that up also didn’t make financial sense for me. So, while I auditioned for theatre, I figured film, TV and commercials would be a great way to keep bringing in money while doing what I love, acting.
Coming out of a BFA Conservatory you are not given all of the tools you need for the business side of the industry, but I was doing really well in independent films. I learned on the job, and before I knew it, I felt at home on camera. Looking back, it makes sense. I didn’t grow up going to the theater. We did double features on the weekends, I watched movie musicals, old black and whites, and a lot of television. At the time I didn’t know it, but the screen was my first introduction to entertainment and realizing that pushes me to want to inspire people in that medium.
You relocated to Los Angeles from New York in 2017. For anyone that’s made big city moves for their career and themselves, what words of wisdom or advice can you provide about that transition?
My relocation was quick and ultimately painless. I moved with my boyfriend, had a job with SoulCycle for security, and had a handful of friends from New York who were already out here. I also had been getting a ton of callbacks from self-tapes in New York for projects casting and shooting in Los Angeles. I miss New York most days, I’m falling in love with Los Angeles, but it’s taken some time. I don’t really feel comfortable telling others what’s right for them, but I’ll give 3 offerings of advice.
1. Live close to where you will be spending most of your time, which hopefully will be auditioning, so if you can be central to the studios and casting directors that would be ideal. We did NOT do that. We were far west in the valley our first 2 years in LA. You miss a lot being that far out. Whether it’s networking, hanging with friends, or just hours of your life sitting in traffic.
2. Get into an acting class (or two) right away. Not just because you should always be working on your craft, which you should be, but you build community, make friends, and meet collaborators and that’s so important. LA can feel big and lonely. Honestly, it's much lonelier than NYC. Finding ‘your people’ helps LA feel more like home.
3. Check out my friend Krystina Bailey Brawer’s book, “Actors! What You Need to Know Before Moving to LA.” She’s great, her book is great and we all can use a bit more greatness in our lives.
You will star as Dr. Maya Schmidt in the Fantasy Island holiday special “Welcome to the Snow Globe.” What can you share about Maya and the mystery that brings her to the island?
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that this 2-hour Christmas special is chock full of reveals and surprises. This episode is filled with strong women who know what they want and are brave enough to go after it. I’d love for every viewer to feel inspired to do the same no matter how scary their journey may seem.
Had you been familiar with the series on Fox, or the 1970’s original run on ABC? What intrigued you about its premise, and the idea of a luxury resort that can fulfill fantasies?
I’m a bit too young to have watched the original when it aired, but I did watch a lot of Nick@Nite as a kid. I watched a handful of the original when I was younger but honestly, I was obsessed with female led shows, “I Love Lucy,” “Bewitched,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” etc. So the fact that this generation gets to have this “Fantasy Island” with two strong female leads is amazing. Who doesn’t want to have their wildest dreams fulfilled? But I love that it is always for the purpose of learning more about who you are and what’s actually important in your life.
Especially in this social media world where we are consuming everyone’s best days, filtered and with a soundtrack. Most people come to the island thinking they want to escape and ultimately find out that they already have everything they need.
youtube
You worked opposite Mackenzie Astin as Maya’s husband, Daniel Jones, Roselyn Sánchez and Kiara Barnes as Elena and Ruby, respectively. What can you share about your time on-set, and experience with your co-stars?
Mackenzie was a dream to work with. From the moment we met on set it was like finding a long-lost friend. He’s obviously such an experienced actor and this was my first top-of-show guest star and he was so supportive throughout the process. I feel so blessed to have had a scene partner that was so kind and present on and off set.
I can’t say it enough, the cast and crew of “Fantasy Island” is such a warm and welcoming family. Roselyn Sanchez is such a generous lead and it’s reflected in how close everyone is on the show. Every first encounter I had with every single person was memorable because of how bright and open they were - from my fitting with wardrobe, to hair and makeup. Even when I met Kiara randomly on set when we were shooting different episodes, it was like grabbing tea with a new friend. Made some lovely connections and memories.
You’re also a certified personal trainer, and have skills in stage combat, boxing, salsa dance and kung fu! Tell us about your goals of maintaining an active lifestyle, and how it’s helped you in your life.
Movement is everything to me. My body has been through many stages. I’ve been overweight, lost 70lbs, been underweight with an eating disorder, and now I’m on a body positive journey. In every single stage of my physical life, movement has been a refuge. There was a short time where I abused movement to fit into a socially acceptable size, but even then, being able to teach movement as a fitness instructor was a sanctuary for me. We are so much more than just our bodies, but they are a vessel for us to discover, express and challenge ourselves. Such a gift.
You found SoulCycle and a family in this pack. Tell us about this fitness family of yours, how the brand aligns with you, and that memorable Kelly Ripa shoutout you received!
It’s funny, because what’s meant for you, is meant for you. In 2012, Marvin Foster Jr. (Sr. Director, Global Instructor Talent Acquisition / Master Instructor) invited me to try out his SoulCycle class. I had just been voted #2 Best Zumba Instructor in NYC (rateyourburn.com) so I guess he was curious to see what I could do on the bike. The second the lights went down, the music started playing and Marvin’s voice and presents consumed our every move, I was hooked. It was my first SoulCycle class ever, but I knew that I could lead a pack.
I took a few more classes in preparation to audition to be an instructor, but ended up having a huge conflict on audition day. I just figured ‘next time,’ but was given the opportunity to come in at the end of the 3 hour audition and tryout. I’m sure every person in that room was like ‘who’s this chick,’ but I didn’t let my nerves get to me. I remember that one of my audition songs was "Church" by T-Pain. I asked the room to ‘go to church with me’ and everyone found something left in their tank to hoot, hollar and dance on their bikes. The rest is history. Got into instructor training and didn’t look back.
Tumblr media
That led to me waking up one day to my phone lit up with messages. ‘Kelly Ripa shouted you out on LIVE!’. Now, Kelly had been taking my class for a bit and she was always such a light in the studio. She was so present and shared her energy with the room, so I figured she liked my class, but to hear on national television that she LOVED my class, was heartwarming (and bananas).
I learned so much about myself at SoulCycle. I thought I was a loner but discovered that I thrive in a community. I found my sexy, I explored my spirituality, and I found my voice. I love inspiring people and now I know that I can do that by just ‘seeing’ another person. Looking into their eyes and letting them know that they matter. My SoulCycle family will always have a special place in my heart. We climb every hill together.
You are involved in organizations and charities including My Friend’s Place and The Loveland Foundation. Tell us about your connection to these causes, and why it’s important for you to be involved.
It all stems from my mom and how I was raised. She’s a single mother who gave 20 years to the military and after retiring had to shuffle me and my younger sister Ebony around to find work. Sometimes working 3 jobs at a time. I didn’t know it at the time, but we were riding the poverty line. Even though things were tough financially, she still found space in her heart to be a social worker, adopt my younger sister and foster children. The system isn’t helping those who need it the most. From our vets to foster children and so many people in between.
Once I came out to LA I was introduced to My Friend’s Place by a friend. They are a nonprofit drop-in resource center in Hollywood offering a comprehensive continuum of care, health, educational, and therapeutic services to nearly 1,400 youth experiencing homelessness and their children each year. All the dots connected for me from there. The large percentage of foster children who age out, end up on the streets. Our vets are suffering from mental illness and don’t have enough resources to help them find the support they need. Black and Brown kids who end up in the system because they don’t have the community support to reach their potential. It’s been a lifelong personal journey that’s led me to a deep understanding of how close I was and so many of us are to living that kind of life. I honestly want to do more and am hoping as I have more platforms to engage with that I can help spread awareness and inspiration to help change our failing welfare system.
I am a blessed soul who has been able to use The Loveland Foundation services. They are committed to showing up for communities of color in unique and powerful ways, with a particular focus on Black women and girls. Post George Floyd (and I’m sure prior) they were offering therapy support to Black women and I was lucky enough to receive those resources. I had never been in therapy prior and found myself, like most people in 2020 needing mental health care. The funds that Loveland offered to me honestly changed my life. I am beyond grateful to the organization.
You like to post motivational, self-love quotes on Instagram, as well as images of inspirational figures, perfect for a pick me up and mid-day inspiration! Why do you choose to share this with others?
I’m gonna be honest, Instagram and social media don't come easy for me. I started posting because it was this cool new app that all my friends from NYU were on, so I wanted to try it out to stay connected. Then it became part of my job as a fitness instructor to post about my classes and class schedule. After a while it all started to feel a bit disingenuous. I would leave a night out or an event completely consumed by the experience and have no photos to post the next day. Which in truth, I was fine with, but I needed content.
Quotes, clips of me dancing on a SoulCycle bike in the lobby, #SoulSistasSunday, they all grew from me just wanting to post what I loved versus just selfies. It also allowed me to not feel so guilty if I didn’t have my phone out whenever I was out. I like to be present. Life is happening and it’s not on my phone. I’m a strong believer in giving out what you personally want more of in your life. Want love, give love, so I try to keep that as my measuring tape for posting on social media.
Tumblr media
Last year, you added a rescue pop, Milo, to your family. Tell us about him, and what you enjoy about being a dog mom! Is he high maintenance?
Milo is a spiritual journey. Full stop. I’ve never had a pet growing up. My mom is allergic to most animals and I actually had an intense fear of dogs up until about 5 years ago. As I grew out of that fear what was left was this intense need for a fur baby. Enter Milo. He is crazy smart, stubborn, loving, the vets classify him as a hyperactive pup. Every day is an adventure and I love him sooooo much.
Our signature question – if you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?
Mint Chocolate Chip. Cool but familiar. I’m pretty calm under pressure and I’m not big on small talk. I prefer sitting down, having deep conversations about life, the universe, hopes and dreams. Also, It was my go to flavour as a kid :)

Audra McDonald
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Audra Ann McDonald (born July 3, 1970) is an American actress and singer. She has appeared on the stage in both musicals and dramas such as Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun and Porgy and Bess. With her full lyric soprano voice, she maintains an active concert and recording career performing song cycles and operas as well as in concerts throughout the U.S. She has won six Tony Awards, more performance wins than any other actor, and is the only person to win all four acting categories. She starred as Dr. Naomi Bennett on the ABC television drama Private Practice.
Early life and education
McDonald was born in West Berlin, Germany, the daughter of American parents, Anna Kathryn, a university administrator, and Stanley McDonald, Jr., a high school principal. At the time of her birth, her father was stationed with the U.S. Army. McDonald was raised in Fresno, California, the elder of two daughters. McDonald graduated from the Roosevelt School of the Arts program within Theodore Roosevelt High School in Fresno. She got her start in acting with Dan Pessano and Good Company Players, beginning in their junior company. "I knew I wanted to be involved in theater when I had my first chance to perform with the Good Company Players Junior Company." "The people who have had the most impact on my life: Good Company director Dan Pessano and my mother." She studied classical voice as an undergraduate under Ellen Faull at the Juilliard School, graduating in 1993.
Career
Theatre
McDonald was a three-time Tony Award winner by age 28 for her performances in Carousel, Master Class, and Ragtime, placing her alongside Shirley Booth, Gwen Verdon and Zero Mostel by accomplishing this feat within five years. She was nominated for another Tony Award for her performance in Marie Christine before she won her fourth in 2004 for her role in A Raisin in the Sun, placing her in the company of then four-time winning actress Angela Lansbury. She reprised her Raisin role for a 2008 television adaptation, earning her a second Emmy Award nomination. On June 10, 2012, McDonald scored her fifth Tony Award win for her portrayal of Bess in Broadway's The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, thus tying Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris. Her 2014 performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill earned McDonald her sixth Tony award and made her the first person to win all four acting categories.
McDonald appeared as Lizzie in the Roundabout Theatre Company's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade, directed by Lonny Price at Studio 54, for which she shared the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Musical with Donna Murphy. On April 29, 2007, while she was in previews for the show, her father was killed when an experimental aircraft he was flying crashed north of Sacramento, California.
McDonald is known for defying racial typecasting in her various Tony Award-winning and -nominated roles. Her performances as Carrie Pipperidge in Nicholas Hytner's 1996 revival of Carousel and Lizzie Curry in Lonny Price's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade made her the first black woman to portray those (traditionally white) roles in a major Broadway production. Of her groundbreaking work in encouraging diversity in musical theatre casting, she said in an interview for The New York Times, "I refuse to be stereotyped. If I think I am right for a role I will go for it in whatever way I can. I refuse to say no to myself. I can't control what a producer will do or say but I can at least put myself out there." In a 'Talk of the Nation' interview on NPR, Asian-American actor Thom Sesma said McDonald's performance in Carousel "transcended any kind of type at all", proving her to be "more actress than African-American."
McDonald appeared in a revised version of Porgy and Bess, at the American Repertory Theatre (in Cambridge, Massachusetts) from August through September 2011, and recreated the role on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, which opened on January 12, 2012 and closed on September 23, 2012. For this role, McDonald won her fifth Tony Award and her first in a Leading Actress category. This American Repertory Theater production was "re-imagined by Suzan-Lori Parks and Diedre Murray as a musical for contemporary audiences."
She appeared at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Williamstown, Massachusetts, in Eugene O'Neill's play A Moon for the Misbegotten in August 2015, co-starring with her husband Will Swenson.
In 2016, McDonald starred on Broadway as the vaudeville performer Lottie Gee in a new musical titled Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed about the making of the 1921 musical Shuffle Along. McDonald left the show on July 24, 2016 to begin maternity leave. Shuffle Along closed on July 24, 2016.
Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill
McDonald played Billie Holiday on Broadway in the play Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in a limited engagement that ended on August 10, 2014. After previews that began on March 25, 2014, the play opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre on April 13, 2014. Of the play, McDonald said in an interview:
It's about a woman trying to get through a concert performance, which I know something about, and she's doing it at a time when her liver was pickled and she was still doing heroin regularly...I might have been a little judgmental about Billie Holiday early on in my life, but what I’ve come to admire most about her – and what is fascinating in this show – is that there is never any self-pity. She's almost laughing at how horrible her life has been. I don’t think she sees herself as a victim. And she feels an incredible connection to her music – she can’t sing a song if she doesn’t have some emotional connection to it, which I really understand.
McDonald won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for this role, making her the first person to earn six Tony Award wins for acting (not counting honorary awards) and the first person to win a Tony Award in all four acting categories. In her acceptance speech, "she thanked her parents for encouraging her to pursue her interests as a child." She also thanked the "strong and brave and courageous" African-American women who came before her, saying in part, "I am standing on Lena Horne's shoulders. I am standing on Maya Angelou's shoulders. I am standing on Diahann Carroll and Ruby Dee, and most of all, Billie Holiday. You deserved so much more than you were given when you were on this planet. This is for you, Billie." This performance was filmed at Cafe Brasil in New Orleans and broadcast on HBO on March 12, 2016. McDonald received a 2016 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in the broadcast.
McDonald had planned to make her West End debut as Holiday in Lady Day in June through September 2016, but after becoming pregnant she postponed these plans. She will perform in Lady Day in June 2017 through September 9, 2017 at the Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End.
Recordings and concerts
McDonald has maintained ties to her classical training and repertoire. She frequently performs in concert throughout the U.S. and has performed with musical organizations such as the New York Philharmonic and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Carnegie Hall commissioned the song cycle The Seven Deadly Sins: A Song Cycle for McDonald, and she performed it at Carnegie's Zankel Hall on June 2, 2004. She sang two solo one-act operas at the Houston Grand Opera in March 2006: Francis Poulenc's La voix humaine and the world premiere of Michael John LaChiusa's Send (who are you? I love you). On February 10, 2007, McDonald starred with Patti LuPone in the Los Angeles Opera production of Kurt Weill's opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny directed by John Doyle. The recording of this production of Mahagonny won two Grammy Awards, for Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Album in February 2009.
In September 2008, American composer Michael John LaChiusa was quoted in Opera News Online, as working on an adaptation of Bizet's Carmen with McDonald in mind.
McDonald has recorded five solo albums for Nonesuch Records. Her first, the 1998 Way Back to Paradise, featured songs written by a new generation of musical theatre composers who had achieved varying degrees of prominence in the 1990s, particularly LaChiusa, Adam Guettel and Jason Robert Brown.
Her next album, How Glory Goes (2000), combined both old and new works, and included composers Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Kern. Her third album, Happy Songs (2002), was big band music from the 1920s through the 1940s. Her fourth album, Build a Bridge (2006), features songs from jazz and pop.
In May 2013, Audra McDonald released her first solo album in seven years, Go Back Home, with a title track from the Kander & Ebb musical The Scottsboro Boys. To coincide with the album's release, McDonald performed a concert at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City that aired on the PBS series Live from Lincoln Center titled Audra McDonald In Concert: Go Back Home.
At the 2010 BCS National Championship Game on January 7, McDonald sang America the Beautiful for the sold-out stadium fans to celebrate the final game of the college football season.
In May 2000, Audra McDonald appeared as "The Beggar Woman" in Lonny Price's concert version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, performed at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, New York, with the New York Philharmonic with George Hearn and Patti LuPone. She reprised the role in some performances of the March 2014 Lincoln Center concert production, again directed by Price, this time opposite Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson. She performed three concerts, titled "Audra McDonald Sings Broadway", in the Sydney Opera House in November 2015, which also included "The Facebook Song" by Kate Miller-Heidke.
Television and film
McDonald has also made many television appearances, both musical and dramatic. In 2001, she received her first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for the HBO film Wit, starring Emma Thompson and directed by Mike Nichols. She also has appeared on Homicide: Life on the Street (1999), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2000), Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years (1999), the short-lived Mister Sterling (2003), The Bedford Diaries (2006), and Kidnapped (2006–2007), and in the 1999 television remake of Annie as Daddy Warbucks' secretary & soon-to-be wife, Miss Farrell. She sang with the New York Philharmonic in the annual New Year's Eve gala concert on December 31, 2006, featuring music from the movies; it was televised on Live from Lincoln Center by PBS. In 2013, she appeared in the HBO documentary Six by Sondheim.
McDonald appeared as Naomi Bennett in Private Practice, a spinoff of Grey's Anatomy. She replaced Merrin Dungey, who played the role in the series pilot. McDonald left Private Practice at the end of season four, but returned for the series finale at the end of season six to bring closure to Naomi's storyline.
In films, McDonald has appeared in Beauty and the Beast (2017), Ricki and the Flash (2015), Best Thief in the World (2004), It Runs in the Family (2003), Cradle Will Rock (1999), The Object of My Affection (1998), and Seven Servants by Daryush Shokof which was her film acting debut in (1996).
McDonald played Mother Abbess in the 2013 NBC live television production of The Sound of Music Live!.
Since 2012, McDonald has served as host for the PBS series Live From Lincoln Center, for which she shared an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Program with the show's producers.
Personal life
McDonald married bassist Peter Donovan in September 2000. They have one daughter, Zoe Madeline Donovan, named after McDonald's close friend and Master Class co-star Zoe Caldwell. McDonald and Donovan divorced in 2009. She married Will Swenson on October 6, 2012. On October 19, 2016, they became parents to a girl, Sally James McDonald-Swenson.
McDonald attended Joan Rivers' funeral in New York on September 7, 2014, where she sang "Smile".

Creative Careers | Three Early-Career Filmmakers on Audience-Building and Engagement
Tumblr media
With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explore the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences.
Films are created for audiences to experience, and audiences in turn are essential to a filmmaker’s career. With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of The Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explored the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences.
In a new short video series, Flavio Alves, Eliza Hittman, and Yance Ford share unique insights around finding and interacting with audiences. They touch on topics including the use of social media, working with outreach partners, making personal appearances, and making themselves part of the distribution campaign. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Each video is available for viewing here, with short preview clips and more on each filmmaker below.
youtube
Yance Ford is director of Strong Island, winner of the “Special Jury Award for Storytelling” at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. He graduated from Hamilton College in 2004, and studied film in the Production Workshop at Third World Newsreel. He is a Sundance Institute Documentary Program Fellow, a MacDowell Colony/Fledgling Fund fellow, a Creative Capital Grantee, and he has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine's “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Ford is a former Series Producer of POV, the PBS documentary series. Strong Island was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018 and is currently in the running for Emmy Award in documentary filmmaking. It is Ford’s first film.

Flavio Alves is a Brazilian who was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998. Shortly thereafter he attended Columbia University, where he earned a degree in Political Science. In 2007, Alves returned to school to study film production at New York University. Since then, he has directed and produced more than 20 films, including the award-winning short films, The Secret Friend (2010), and Tom in America (2014), which was named “Best Short Film” by the National Board of Review. His first feature film, The Garden Left Behind, is Fiscally Sponsored by NYFA and will premiere in the fall of 2018. It is the first film to be funded substantially though sales of donated items on eBay.

Eliza Hittman grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. She received a BA degree in theater and drama from Indiana University in 2001 and an MFA degree from the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts in 2010. Her short film Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight (2011) premiered at Sundance. Hittman was nominated as “Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director” at the Gotham Awards and for the “John Cassavetes Award” at the Indie Spirit Awards for her first feature, It Felt Like Love (2014). Her second film, Beach Rats, won the Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018. Hittman teaches at Pratt Institute.
