New bookshelf organization! I went back to author last name; color coding is pretty but annoying

this book im reading is giving every indication that it takes place in the 1920/30s and yet. and fucking yet the main character starts singing a taylor swift song. get out of my face. please just fucking decide what time period your book takes place in instead of doing this. it also has some of the dumbest takes and brings too much dumb internet discourse straight onto the pages. the main character actually said the line "or maybe he's gaslighting me?" shut up

°․✶ My June Wrap Up
June was a strong month for me, it was this month that my reading spark fully reignited and my love for all things bookish took hold once again. I’ve missed it. Getting lost in books again has been amazing, and luckily this month I read some really good books! So here’s a summary of what I read in June and my quick thoughts about them! ‘Dark Rise‘ by C. S. Pacat » Book #1 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really got on…

“Renowned young adult author, So and So’s adult debut!”
And then it’s just a YA book with spicy scenes, a 600% increase in swearing, and a 20 year old MC instead of an 18 year old MC

Hi Jenn, Recently I’ve noticed many special editions even for debuts, like new books coming out with multiple different covers, sprayed edges etc. and authors on socials trying to get readers to buy more than one copy. Previously I thought books only did special editions on occasions like a 10 year anniversary. Is this a trend for new books and how common is it really? How do they come about, are they included in contracts? And how do publishers decide which books/authors get them?
I don't really rep the kinds of books that get that "special edition" treatment. (No shade to my books at all -- my books are terrific! I just don't rep a lot of books in the YA/Adult Fantasy/Romantasy space!) -- so, I asked some of my colleagues who do, and this answer is cribbed from that conversation:
Those cool editions with sprayed edges and alternate covers, etc, are definitely trending right now for certain kinds of books, likely in no small part because of BookTok and Bookstagram. People love posting and boosting pretty book packages and I think publishers are leaning into that--especially with books they think will do well on social media.
These are the "buckets" a special edition might fit into:
-- As you mentioned, it's a special edition of an already very popular book created by the publisher. Perhaps to celebrate something like an anniversary, or a big award, or just because there are enough fans that there might also be collectors out there! For example, the HUNGER GAMES Illustrated Edition, or the recent WICKED Collector's Edition with sprayed edges and a new cover that, not-so-coincidentally, came out just in time for the movie.
-- It's a “deluxe first edition” created in a limited quantity by the publisher, who wants to signal this as a splashy book and to boost pre-orders. I think the thought is that when something is a limited edition it can spur folks to buy before they run out. There are a lot of factors that go into deciding if a special edition can happen, including cost and deadlines because printing takes longer. And, they would only do it if they thought there was a good chance that it would REALLY move the needle and get the audience interested. (A "special deluxe edition" of a random middle grade book or adult litarary fiction book is simply not going to attract Book Tokkers the same way a Special Deluxe Edition of a new "Fourth Wing" type book might, you know?)
-- It's a special edition created by a third party, such as a Book Box or a specific retailer, in order to bring buyers to their platforms. For example, a B&N special edition, a Waterstone's special edition, or a subscription box like Owlcrate or Fairyloot. Usually, it is the publisher pitching to these accounts to secure those special editions, and they commit to buying x-number of copies and get their own print run with their special cover or edges or whatever it is.
Because the publisher can’t guarantee years in advance that the book will have a special first edition or be accepted into a subscription box, etc, it is never specified in the contract that there WILL be one. What is outlined in the contract is what the royalties from those special sales, subscription boxes, etc, will be, should they happen.

Fairyloot is such a mess with how their quality and customer service has gone to the trash. But j also can't help but notice anytime the characters are poc or a gay couple there is a wave of readers complaining that it reads like ya as opposed to adult. I also notice a lot of pushback in comments when people ask for more queer rep

hi all! i got the november 2023 YA fantasy fairyloot box a few days back and wanted to share with you. the theme of november's box is "alchemy of us" and the book this month is The Scarlet Alchemist by Kylie Lee Baker. it's the first book in a series set in ancient China, and this fairyloot edition has the prettiest sprayed edges and gorgeous endpaper art (i'll share photos of these in an upcoming post). i'm super excited about this book! a few years ago i fell down a rabbit hole of fantasy novels set in ancient China, so The Scarlet Alchemist sounds right up my alley. additionally, in the author interview pages, Baker mentions that she takes inspiration from Full Metal Alchemist. i'm curious to see how that plays out.
the november box came with a lot of fun goodies i haven't seen before from fairyloot, including a hanging pocket organizer which i laid flat for the photo above. (i struggle with these photos. i wanted to hang up the organizer and have all the items peeking out but it wasn't going how i imagined it so i did a floor layout instead. i did my best!! lol). there's an id card holder with a detachable lanyard and cell phone loop, so you can choose how/where/if you want to attach it. the id card holder is inspired by the Vampire Academy book series, which i haven't read, but i'm enjoying the theme of it anyway.
additionally, there's a calendar based on Sarah J. Maas' books (the title on the box reads "The World of Sarah J. Maas Calendar"). i haven’t read Maas' series either so i’ll probably give the calendar to a friend, but it is a really fun calendar set. there’s a wood block with a notch in it, and then a card for each month of the year, with character art in the background. the cards have pretty foil lettering and edges, too. maybe i should finally give in and read acotar?
a few more things, of which we've previously seen iterations: this box came with the next two tarot cards to add to the ongoing tarot deck, and it came with the third installment of the hollow books series! the "advanced alchemy" book in the photo is actually a hollow book with a magnet closure. it can be used to tuck away items on a bookshelf: knickknacks, valuables, bookmarks, etc. there's also an author letter and spoiler card, both with artwork on the opposite side, and a bookmark version of the spoiler card art.
and that's everything for this box! thanks so much for reading. as a heads up, i put my fairyloot subscription on pause for a month, so i will not have a post about december's box for you all. i'm taking a month to determine whether i want to continue my subscription or not. as much as i love receiving these boxes, i've been in a very specific reading mood over the past few months and am not at all caught up on the fairyloot books i've received, so it might not make sense to continue ordering them. gotta make sure i'm spending my money wisely etc. i'll post an update in january on whether i decide to continue my subscription.
hope you're doing well. ✨

hi nat!! i was wondering if you knew of any more places like the abominable book club that you'd recommend/that aren't too costly😅? thanks :)
i have tried three different book boxes and the abominable book club is my favourite; i can't really give any other recs for horror/thriller boxes as i've never tried a different one! however i have tried:
(and a note that i'm in the uk so these are very much with a uk reader in mind!!)
fairyloot: i got one fairyloot box and decided it wasn't for me; i really enjoy the reading/discovering new part of my subscription boxes and fairyloot is very much 'here is one very beautiful book and a bunch of merch of stuff you might not even have read'. usually ya, though they have an adult box too!
a box of stories: i really liked my box of stories box! i chose fantasy/horror and though they weren't stuff i'd pick myself, they were still interesting - and i liked that it was a book box about the books and not the merchandising of books, if that makes sense? you can pick what genres you like/don't like or want! i asked for no crime personally; a lot of horror sometimes gets tangled up with crime but i'm not a fan! they also have an option where you can link your goodreads, so that you don't get books you already own! if i wasn't committed to the abominable book club i'd probably be getting these monthly instead!
and i know lots of people love illumicrate: it seems too close to fairyloot for me to personally enjoy it, but if you're a merch-driven person it might be more enjoyable! again, ya fantasy!
i've been hearing a lot of good things about the broken binding recently too: they do a subscription that's basically a reissue of an older trilogy/series but Fancy! fantasy, usually.
i am constantly getting facebook ads for the locked library, which i believe is a special edition direct from the publisher (harpercollins in this case) - but i really personally prefer a mix of books and no need for special editions in my own boxes, so i haven't tried it!

"YOUR NAME IS NO CURSE, LITTLE BIRD. I JUST LIKE THE TAST OF IT."
Finally finished Belladonna by Adalyn Grace. I got the fairyloot edition a year ago! The story and characters are simply delicious. While I'm normally not one for murder mysteries, this one had me hooked. The romance between Signa and the Death was tantalizing (this is a YA so no sex scenes but there is some passionate kissing)
My only negative is this author like to make a point in telling the reader that the character is not wearing a corset very often. Every time it's brought up I was dragged from a beautiful scene.
Over all this is a four star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book for me. I will be getting the second book Foxglove. Hopefully it won't take me a year to get to it.
