The Umbrellas — Fairweather Friend (Slumberland)
Tumblr media
The Umbrellas’ second album opens with a shimmer of cymbal, a bobbling pogo stick of bass, a jagged slash of guitar, hitting harder from the get-go than in the dream-poppy self-titled. Two distinct personalities emerge from songs which alternate lead singers. “Three Cheers,” and indeed, all the cuts lead sung by Matt Ferrara, leans hard into Postcard Records/C86-ish pop. Here especially, Ferrara’s scrappy heartfelt vocals give off a good whiff of Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins, and his dueling, scrabbling guitar jangle with Morgan Stanley evokes harder, more angular bands of the era, like Fire Engines.
Then, when Stanley takes the mic, the sonics turn softer and more expansive. In careening “Goodbye,” she starts the verse against the dry tinder of drumming (that’s Keith Frerichs), the playful hop of bass (Nik Oka) then twirls and swirls in giddy “bah bah bahs” at the chorus. Her songs have the barbed sweetness of the Aislers Set and Camera Obscura.
The two switch off, both between and within songs, and some of the best cuts are the ones where they both sing. “Gone” jangles dizzily around Ferrara’s rough, pitchy romanticism, while Stanley volleys in angelic, perfect descants in a dream-scented soprano.
The Umbrella’s debut was a pleasure, but Fairweather Friend aims at deeper feelings, sharper guitar play and more rambunctious rhythms. The closing “PM” feels like it’s going to be an introspective ending, as liquid, lyrical guitars crisscross and Ferrara channels hurt and confusion. But it kicks up in a surprising way, ratcheting up the power chords, rumbling up some drums, and inviting Stanley in from the wings to lead feathery layers of melodic ecstasy. The Umbrellas have always offered bashed up, joyriding sweetness, but here they reach at—and intermittently attain—a Spector-esque wall of rock ‘n roll sound. Even better, that larger scale doesn’t undermine the vulnerability of their songs, but instead amplifies and clarifies it.

You know what's bullshit?
Your band got new t-shirts in fucking NOVEMBER and I've asked you several times since then where to send the money so I can get a fucking shirt too, but I got blatantly ignored. I see some girl posting a selfie on your page wearing your shirt yet I've been asking for one for fucking months. I express how it upsets me and you turn it around to make it about yourself. I've put my wants and feeling aside for everyone else my entire fucking life but the one time I put my foot down, I'm the one who ends up feeling shitty and guilty for saying anything at all. Know what else fucking sucks? You send me songs your band records, I drop everything I'm doing to listen, tell you my thoughts, what have you. Even if it's not right away, I make sure I dedicate time to listen because you're my best friend and I love your band to death. I send you songs my band records and I get left on read. I send you songs and you tell me that you'll check it out later, which you never do. You get "distracted." You're too "agitated" to make time for me. I have to remind you multiple times, which makes me feel like an annoying pest asking over and over because your thoughts matter to me. I expected to have some kind of reciprocation when it comes to sharing my art with you, but you clearly don't care. You "don't have time" for me anymore. Yeah, you're "so stressed out" from "so many things," and you don't have time to take five fucking minutes of your "ever-so-busy" day to listen to my music that I poured my blood, sweat, tears, heart, and soul into recording, yet you're on Facebook all day posting memes, reacting to and responding to comments from everyone on your posts, and heart reacting to pictures of half naked OnlyFans chicks and their selfies. Makes me feel real good; thanks a lot, asshole.

Life´s too short for weird music Tagesempfehlung 28.01.2024
Album of the week: The Umbrellas / Fairweather friend
Track: Gone

Show up, Shut Up, and Lift Up
1 Then Elihu answered and said: 2 “Hear my words, you wise men,     and give ear to me, you who know; 3 for the ear tests words     as the palate tastes food. 4 Let us choose what is right;     let us know among ourselves what is good. 5 For Job has said, ‘I am in the right,     and God has taken away my right; 6 in spite of my right I am counted a liar;     my wound is incurable, though I am…

Found your letter on a full moon Sunday night
Some other girl in your spell,
casting plans for her life
Pour the vodka, it dulls sharp lines
And you didn't mean to do it,
So I don't have to believe it
If you didn't really mean it
The magical thinking gets us by

someone's anxiety needs to hear this:
they haven't moved on while you've been gone. it may look it because they're active in other things, but that doesn't mean your seat has been taken. you haven't lost any value in your absence. they'll just be happy to see you again.
