Dear all fans of Joel Smallishbeans, here is your weekly reminder that C!Joel is definitely a fae who is desperately trying to learn how to lie to fit in with everyone else.

Reasoning/evidence:

His character traits change in fandom and canon spaces to match with the biome or habitat he's in. Body changing to fit nature?? Nature fae moment.

He has pulled so many people so fast, you know what creature is known to be inhumanly beautiful and charismatic? That's right. Fae.

Pretending to be a god is such a faerie move.

In esmp s2 he was the one to make Jimmy a sentient toy and convinced the entire server to play along. Fae curse also fae move.

Esmp s1 he was unaffected by Xornoth's magic, I dunno about you but that sounds like fae bullshit to me :/

Esmp s1 again, he worshipped a MOTHER TREE that BROUGHT LIFE to HIM AND HIS ENTIRE AREA. If you need a reminder, FAE ARE BORN OF PLANTS 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 AND FIERCELY PROTECT NATURE SURROUNDING THEM.

Esmp s1 again again, he hated Scott, a canon faerie from what I assume to be the winter court? (Judging by Rivendell) Joel would probably be from the summer court. Obviously as both are on two ends of the extremes they wouldn't clash very well.

Fae Joel lore and my 'evidence' aka fuck you he's a fae.

Joel is a summer court fae! Which also means he is Seelie. My reasoning for this is a combination of two things: personality traits and aesthetic

For personality he aligns with a lot of the Summer fae traits, he is kind and more benevolent than a fae from the Unseelie courts but is still capable of a lot more cruelty than the spring court. Fae of the summer court usually are rather frivolous and hotheaded. They hold politeness and manners highly but not as high as say the spring court. Fae from the summer court are more willing to cut losses and not force life. (Ex if the see a dying animal they would be quicker to put it out of its misery and feed it to another animal rather than spent long hours of trying to save it. They acknowledge death as a part of life and see more of the negative side of things but still choose to focus of positive aspects. Summer fae tend to lead a more arrogant and hedonistic lifestyle but do not enjoy pleasure at the expense of another happiness. They are more willing to spend time helping another than themselves.

As for aesthetic: Summer court colors are Forrest greens of healthy plants and rich golds an oranges of the sun, they also lean towards richer pinks and reds than spring fae. So you know, Mezalea, Stratos, his normal green?

Headcanons to go with Fae!Joel

-Joel is definitely a fae who will spend decades learning how to lie like other creatures. He's still terrible at it because fae can't lie, but he has spent so much of his life around humans and other creatures able to lie that he has the capacity for sarcasm and white lies. He's still working on real lying though (see: Secret Life smp)

-He is immortal until proven otherwise.

-He's a dragonfly based fae with wings and antennae to match

-When Scott killed him in third life he definitely damaged Joel's wings and Joel wasn't able to heal them until he was off server. So he didn't really like him.

absolutely loving the permitmaster episode, especially the melon task because of how everyone did it

joel got more and more panicked with each slice he ate and eventually started punching grian and cub to get them to want to punch him even though they were already punching him on request

cleo broke it and then it didn't drop as slices so they were being clever and assuming cub and grian had done something tricky while simultaneously being silly cause. silk touch axe. also "you can't see it therefore it doesn't exist. object permanence is a lie"

beef going all "ce n'est pas une pipe" and saying 'the melon's demolished its now melon slices?' and his very convenient lava

the sound effect in grian's pov for false loading after reading the task and then her deciding damaging herself to eat melon is more fun and therefore better than just throwing it away

joe shooting a rocket and saying "oh no it exploded" and committing to pretending the melon was gone

Fae Joel and Shadowfae Lizzie the beloved

Joel grins without any of his usual good humor, and she catches sight of canines that are longer, sharper than usual. Ah, it’s been a long time since she’s seen him like this— not since he first came courting, still very much wild from the Hunt. The arena has definitely taken hold of him.

She wonders what will happen when it fully takes her. 

She thinks she might enjoy it.

But out loud, she says, “You should probably go, before anyone shows up and gets the wrong idea.”

“We wouldn’t want that,” says Joel with another flash of his sharpened teeth, but he steps back anyway. He hops up onto the parapet again, then looks back over his shoulder. “You know, your hound was a king, the last go round. A bloody and vicious one.”

“And now he’s a knight, bound to a queen,” Lizzie answers, with perfect equanimity. 

Joel scoffs and disappears over the edge of the parapet into the night.

Changeling! Scott stuff

Some lil ideas for Changeling! Scott

(my first idea and this is its continuation)

Scott Smajor was a name he made up during X Life. He heard "Lizzie LDShadowlady" and "Joel Smallishbeans" so he came up with "Scott Smajor"

Completely awkward during X Life. He struggled to be a human so badly. Thankfully he was on his own for a while so no one could really see his awkwardness until he ran into someone.

When he's alone, he does go into his changeling form and is still a black bug changeling not a rainbow changeling since he used to serve Queen Crysalis.

He loves forms where he can fly, like being a starborn, since it makes him feel like his changeling self rather than being in that form.

During Limited Life, Jimmy finds out he's a changeling and realises what Scott does and it tears such a wedge between the two, hence the whole "Say I love you back!" "You have 30 seconds" bit.

Jimmy still doesn't trust him due to knowing the truth no matter what Scott does nor the amount of apologies he has made.

Jimmy understands why but he still doesn't forgive Scott.

Nobody else has caught on that he's a Changeling yet. The Watchers are a bit suspicious of him and some of the Lifers and Empires members too.

He does eventually go back home where he becomes a new Changeling and learns to share love, rather than take it.

This does happen before Secret & Real Life where he's more accepting in a way that Jimmy doesn't want to be his flower husband anymore and is learning to let go. He may drop a couple of hints to it but doesn't go deep into it.

He has gotten better at being human, but slip ups can still happen. He has gone days where he doesn't eat or drink since he's feeding off of love (before he's reformed), the occasional forgetting that he's human and saying non human stuff or acting non human-like.

He's been spotted moving on all fours as a human on occasions. It's still confusing even to this day.

His Scottish accent is his way of being undercover in case any other chngelings show up.

Scott's so used to talking in a Scottish accent, he forgets that it's fake and not how he actually sounds so when he returned home, he had to force himself to go back to his old voice, which he now despises.

🧸 A headcanon about their childhood

my headcanons about joel’s childhood are incredibly self indulgent and ties into a lot of hyperspecific lore that is also very self indulgent so i’m just gonna say that his childhood was relatively normal (as far as being a fae goes lmao) and he kinda just fucked around for a bit with minimal adult supervision until he actually started making friends

in the faeU how did joel and lizzie end up meeting and falling in love with eachother?

Lizzie and Joel have been together for as long as anyone could remember. No one knows how they met, or what caused them to fall for one another. A lot of people wonder how someone like Joel, who looks like he hasn't shaved in years, ended up with Lizzie, the refined Lady of Shadows, terrifying and elegant.

Compared to some of the speculation among the fair folk as to how they met, their actual love story is... rather straight forward. Joel heard whispers about the Lady of Shadows in the forest, and decided to check them out, see if they were true, and also... maybe kill her, if she was seriously threatening anyone.

This was before he met up with Scar, so he spent most of his time wandering by himself from town to town, helping with magical problems like vengeful ghosts and curses.

At this point, Lizzie hadn't completed her transformation into an eldritch guardian. She was still... partially fae, she still had many of their weaknesses, and her omniscience wasn't fully developed. The only person she'd had to talk to since the fae had left was Cleo.

So it was to her great surprise when a human simply walked into her forest untouched by the sometimes extremely aggressive animals who lived in it.

Joel saw this beautiful woman with an already insane (and quickly growing) amount of power, and it was all over for him. It wasn't love at first sight, exactly, but he was quite taken with her. Enough that after his first visit, he kept coming back.

Lizzie was intrigued by this strange human. She found him amusing, and quite skilled with the limited magic he possessed. (Side note: Joel is quite powerful for a human wizard. Lizzie just has a very warped sense of power from... ya know).

And over a couple decades, that interest in one another developed into something more. Soon enough, Joel proposed to Lizzie, and then they were married.

It's a very loving relationship. Joel still lives in the mountains with Scar, but he visits whenever he can. Cleo has described their reunions after a particularly long stretch of not seeing one another as "toothrottingly affectionate." They're practically attached at the hip whenever Joel's around.
