ââ1 Samuel⏠â17:41â-âŹ47⏠â(ERV)âŹâŹ. âThe Philistine slowly walked closer and closer to David. Goliathâs helper walked in front of him, carrying a large shield. Goliath looked at David with disgust. He saw that David was only a handsome, healthy boy. Goliath said to David, âWhat is that stick for? Did you come to chase me away like a dog?â Then Goliath used the names of his gods to say curses against David. He said to David, âCome here, and Iâll feed your body to the birds and wild animals.â David said to the Philistine, âYou come to me using sword, spear, and javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord All-Powerful, the God of the armies of Israel. You have said bad things about him. Today the Lord will let me defeat you. I will kill you. I will cut off your head and feed your body to the birds and wild animals. And we will do the same thing to all the other Philistines too. Then all the world will know there is a God in Israel. All the people gathered here will know that the Lord doesnât need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to the Lord, and he will help us defeat all of you.â
âA Sure Defenseâ By In Touch Ministries:
âChoosing to stand for the Lord is a victoryâno matter the outcome of the battle.â
âDavidâs battle with Goliath was more than a fight between two nations. It was a defense of Jehovahâs name and a challenge to those who doubted His supremacy.
King Saul doubted that the young man could be victorious over a seasoned warrior like Goliath. But as David pointed out in todayâs passage, the only way a boy with a sling could defeat the giant Philistine was by the Lordâs hand (v. 37). In confronting Goliath, David showed courage, but what really drove him was righteous indignation: âFor who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he has dared to defy the armies of the living God?â (v. 26).
Today this narrative is often read merely as a triumphant underdog tale. Modern audiences may take comfort in the belief that theyâll never have to deal with such a scenario. But the real story is that David stood up for God, and there are times when we should do the same. We donât need a degree to defend our faith. Our âsmooth stonesâ (v. 40) are the truths weâve learned from the Bible. Just remember that whatever the outcome, the battle is the Lordâs (v. 47), and He gives victory to the faithful.â

Quote
Civilizations may try to live forever by exploiting the time-dilation effects near a black hole to hibernate and survive into the very far-future universe. Something like this is wonderfully described in Isaac Asimov's short story "The Last Question." A hyper-computer called the Cosmic AC reboots the universe after our cosmos has fully entropied. After mulling over the darkness, the multidimensional machine says: "Let there be light!" Ultimately, a super-civilization may attempt to artificially create a universe in the laboratory via black hole fabrication. This far-out notion of artificial cosmogenesis might explain why the many constants in our universe are so precisely tuned for our existence. For example dark energy -- a repulsive form of gravity -- is a whopping 123 orders of magnitude weaker than what would have been predicted from quantum physics. This could not have happened by coincidence unless there is an infinity of parallel universes with their own different dark energy values, speculate some astrophysicists. Or instead, dark energy is a signal of â- dare I say -- intelligent design. Iâm not implying spiritual metaphysics here, but perhaps our universe might simply be a science fair project of an entity from an exo-universe.

Hubble Captures a Dozen Galaxy Doppelgangers
NASA - Hubble Space Telescope patch. Nov. 7, 2019 This NASA Hubble Space Telescope photo reveals a cosmic kaleidoscope of a remote galaxy, which has been split into multiple images by an effect called gravitational lensing. Gravitational lensing means that the foreground galaxy cluster is so massive that its gravity distorts the fabric of space-time, bending and magnifying the light from the more distant galaxy behind it. This âfunhouse mirrorâ effect not only stretches the background galaxy image, but also creates multiple images of the same galaxy.
Image above: This recent picture from Hubble shows a galaxy nicknamed the Sunburst Arc that has been split into a kaleidoscope illusion of no fewer than 12 images formed by a massive foreground cluster of galaxies 4.6 billion light-years away. Image Credits: NASA, ESA and E. Rivera-Thorsen (Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics Oslo, Norway). The lensing phenomenon produces at least 12 images of the background galaxy, distributed over four major arcs. Three of these arcs are visible in the top right of the image, while one counter arc is visible in the lower left â partially obscured by a bright foreground star within the Milky Way. The galaxy, nicknamed the Sunburst Arc (officially designated PSZ1 G311.65-18.48), is almost 11 billion light-years from Earth and has been lensed into multiple images by a massive foreground cluster of galaxies 4.6 billion light-years away. Hubble uses these cosmic magnifying glasses to study objects that would otherwise be too faint and too small for even its extraordinarily sensitive instruments. The Sunburst Arc is no exception, despite being one of the brightest gravitationally lensed galaxies known. The lens makes images of the Sunburst Arc that are between 10 and 30 times brighter than the background galaxy would normally look. The magnification allows Hubble to view structures as small as 520 light-years across that would be too small to see without the turboboost from the lensing effect. The structures resemble star-forming regions in nearby galaxies in the local universe, allowing astronomers to make a detailed study of the remote galaxy and its environment.

Hubbleâs observations show that the Sunburst Arc is similar to galaxies that existed at a much earlier time in the history of the universe, perhaps only 150 million years after the big bang.
