I’m having trouble remembering ones I loved then but not now, so I’ll just talk about Fall Out Boy, which I already do all the time

I don’t even know why FOB is my heart band. As soon as I saw the Sugar We’re Goin Down I liked them, but after I saw the A Little Less Sixteen Candles video (also the first inkling of my vampire fixation) I knew I was in deep and would be buying what they were selling for a very long time. I’m not one of those salty From Under the Cork Tree people who’s mad at them for changing their sound so often. I haven’t listened to any album I didn’t like. People are allowed to change.

A handful of hot cardboard takes

So due to having assignment work to do and a relatively busy day tomorrow, I’m going to be writing both today and tomorrow’s blog articles tonight. Unnnnfortunately, it’s approaching 11PM, and I haven’t even figured out what I’m writing this one about- it has to be relatively short, since I don’t have that much time, and I want the tomorrow one to be an album, and that always takes time, and ehhhh…

I guess it’s been a hot second (read: a week exactly) since I talked about Magic, so that’ll do. But what specifically?

I mean, I guess there’s these new spoilers to go on about. I guess I’m hotting some takes.

First of all, we have the D&D set, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. I feel like this set’s creation was inevitable. WoTC has had D&D and Magic for decades now, and the only crossover we got was the Un-Card Sword of Dungeons and Dragons? And yet fucking Walking Dead got a whole-ass secret lair? Yeah no way this wasn’t happening. So far we only have 5 cards, so one by one I suppose.

Tiamat was obviously going to be a thing, but she feels exceptionally underwhelming. Admittedly, cramming her massive list of abilities and flavour into one 2.5 by 3.5 inch card was going to be difficult, but this is just meh. She finds five dragons, whoop de fucking do. This is never going to see any play outside of Commander, and I can’t imagine picking her to lead your 5-colour Dragons deck above The Ur-Dragon, it’s Scion, or even Morophon. And, I’m all for underrated jank commanders, but I also don’t like tutors, and if you’ve ever resolved Conflux (which this kinda feels like) you know it can be a huge pain. A solid Meh/10. I do like that they didn’t give her an epithet, though.

The Vorpal Sword is actually pretty sick. Not only is it a cheap coloured equipment that slots great into Black/X Voltron Commander lists, not only is it an alternative wincon that isn’t complete shit but also requires going all in and is very interactable, but I actually think this has a slot in cubes interested in Black Aggro, Black Artifacts, or both. The arts for this card look sick aas hell, and I’m extremely interested in seeing in snicker-snack someone to death.

I was wondering whether or not Halfling was going to be a creature type, and that question got answered fairly quick. Citizen on the typeline is interesting considering it’s only been seen on 4 token producers so far (and also Mobilized District becomes one), and the recent Edgewall Innkeeper being a peasant. I guess this guy is too prosperous for the peasantry.

Oh, the card itself? Well, I was never a fan of Wily Goblin, but I don’t really think that’s why we’re here. This charming fellow is a second Green Soul Sister, supporting the Witherbloom lifegain archetype from Strixhaven, and it’s nice to see colours other than White (and occasionally, Black) get to do life things. It’s always been secondary (tertiary? They don’t get lifelink) in green, or only on shite cards, so it getting pushed is an interesting twist.

It is an utter tragedy that you can put a Bag of Holding in a Portable Hole in Magic now, and it doesn’t even do anything. I get the feeling this is going to be either everywhere or nowhere, though I’m leaning towards the latter. Any permanent type is really nice, but 2 or less is restrictive enough that this misses way more often than you’d like. But, if it ends up being good, you’re going to see a lot of Portable Holes exiling Portable Holes, and that’s just kinda funny.

Isn’t there supposed to be a colon in there? This is just a more splashable, flavour-twisted variant of Victim of Night- though that card ends up being one of the best Terrors Mono-Black gets to run, out of a long long list. This, unfortunately, is a bit worse than that is in competitive formats, and considerably worse in EDH where giant Angels, Demons, and Dragons are often the targets you want to tell to die. I’m just going to stick with Doom Blade. And Go for the Throat. And Snuff Out and Hero’s Downfall and Victim of Night and Heartless Act and

So, I actually really like these basics, but specifically for this set. Box text is an essential part of D&D, and putting it on the basics is just a lovely bit of flavour. I don’t know if they’ve said whether every basic variant is going to have this, but I kinda hope they do. The art for these is top fucking notch, too. I’m not convinced this should be a permanent thing though.

 But of course, that’s not the only set we have spoilers for, because Magic Spoiler Season is a sine wave of hype now and it will never end. Modern Horizons 2: because the first one didn’t fuck enough formats up. That’s not very fair, that set was cool as fuck, but in my eyes that’s for the kookier designs rather than the bonkers powerful shit. More Throes of Chaos, less Hogaak. Anyway, we’ve got 3 new cards and some reprints, so let’s get into them.

I’m really not sure how to feel about this art, but hey, that’s just my opinion. Brainstone is a solid role-player in all sorts of artifacty, eggsy decks, probably the best Egg we’ve seen in a while. It’s going right in my Radha deck, I’ll tell you that much. Considering how expensive the worst card ever made, Sensei’s Divining Top, is getting, having a colourless topdeck manipulation option that’s likely not too spenno is nice, even if it’s a oneshot. I like it.

Oh, haha, it’s Lion’s Eye Diamond but they drew the rest of the fucking Lion. While this looks absolutely gorgeous, it doesn’t go into Cat tribal, and I’m not that much of a degenerate, so meh. For real though, this doesn’t actually look broken to me- LED is powerful because it’s a lotus, whereas this takes that and makes it a slow, multi-turn Pyretic Ritual. I also don’t think having an LED effect in Modern does much for the format, so. Eh?

Ok, here’s the one everyone’s talking about. Urza’s Saga is such a slam-dunk on a meta level. It’s a card named after a set, a fun reversal of Time Spiral block all being named after cards, and considering Modern Horizons was basically Time Spiral 2 I wouldn’t be surprised if MH2 was TSP3. It’s also an Enchantment Land but doesn’t look like it, referencing the fact that Urza’s block was actually Enchantment Matters but no-one remembers that because basically none of those cards were the good ones. This card is blatantly powerful, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see it pop up in a loooot of decks in various formats. In commander, this is a land for 3 turns that then turns into a Sol Ring, while also maybe making you a token or two and maybe even finding a weird hate piece or combo machine (…or Top) instead. In Modern or Legacy, it tutors for all sorts of nonsense, while making potential threats for artifact decks in the land slots. This card, while slow, has potential to be patently absurd, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it was banned in at least one format by the end of the year. We’ll see which ones.

Counterspell in modern is something a very specific group of people were counting for. Personally, it’s not the vintage spell I would have been hyped for, I was wanting Swords, but here we are. I almost feel, however, that Counterspell’s potential in Modern has been wasted at this point. Like, how many decks are even running Mana Leak these days? And how many of those decks want to be holding up UU on turn 2? Because in a fast format like this, Mana Leak might as well be Counterspell most of the time. The new art is baller, ill give it that.

I…don’t know enough about how this card is in Legacy Death and Taxes to know how well it would be in Modern Death and Taxes. It seems pretty good? I like that they’re doing old-border reprints again, though, that was like the only good thing behind Time Spiral Remastered.

Fucking Finally. With that said, I’m not convinced that finally reprinting these fetches is going to keep the price down much, and for long- the Horizon lands from MH1 see a fair bit less play, and they are creeping up to $20 a pop for some of them at this point. I guess if you need them, buy them now, because they aren’t going to stay low. It’s going to take more than a single reprint in a premium product before I’m satisfied in the reprint quality.

 Anyway, that’s the lot of them. My takes on these cards was probably a bit chiller than what you’d see from someone who’s actually in the know of competitive formats these days, but if you came here for serious analysis, then I’m not sure what to tell you. More well-thought-out Magic talk, uhh, next time I talk about Magic.

Birds of Prey: Not gonna win Best Picture, but still great fun.

I went into Birds of Prey with a lot of hope and excitement, the concept and the visuals of the promotional material grabbed my interest more than any action film in a long, long time. The ads are colourful, chaotic, campy and badass and for the most part the whole movie keeps a lot of these qualities. While it’s nowhere near perfect, it’s still a fun time.

We follow Harley through a fractured narrative that at times is confusing, as she finds herself on the wrong side of pretty much everyone in Gotham after an epic breakup with Mr. J who, blessedly, doesn’t make an appearance the whole film. While at first she struggles to cope, downing cheese whiz from the can, buying a hyena and playing knife darts with a picture of her exes face. Then she finds out everyone in Gotham is now free to settle their grievances with her, free from any payback from the Joker.

The whole movie is basically Harley scrambling for her life against cops, gangs, and Roman Sidonis AKA Black Mask, who she’s promised a big important diamond. That’s the official storyline, Sidonis wants a diamond and his quest fucks with all the birds in Gotham, so they have to come together to stop him.

Black Mask is actually my biggest issue with the film. He posses a lot of decent villain qualities, an entitled arrogance, a penitent for gratuitous bloodshed and a cool mask. But he is so heavily queer coded that it’s comical, and almost offensive. Even though it’s not overtly stated, and he and Victor Zsasz don’t hump in the open it’s been heavily implied in marketing and he has all the characteristics you’d think of from an old Disney villain based on a drag queen. He’s impeccably styled, ostentatious, dramatic, and Zsasz has to talk him down in weird, intimate ways that imply heavily they do it. This is all disappointing to me because queercoding a homicidal freak is not the same as actual, positive representation.

The movie DOES have that tho, in spades. Dinah Lance/ Black canary, a black bar crooner and seemingly expert kick boxer is the badass with a heart of gold, who for me was the films breakout star. Jurnee Smollet Bell spins from vulnerable to kickass to wiseass and masters all these rolls, looking amazing. Renee Montoya is a cop, which isn’t entirely her fault. She’s a strong Latina woman whose accomplishments are stolen by men, so she doesn’t get a lot of respect. She brute strong, and the only one of the birds with a moral compass. Little Cassandra Cain is a sharp departure from her comic persona; she’s the films McGuffin who needs to be protected. She’s great. Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), is kind of a weird one. She has one of the best fighting styles, but she’s awkward in a very confusing way.

Obviously Margot Robbie’s Harley is the films main badass obviously. Her constant voice-over narration is a bit taxing at times but for the most part you’re entirely on her side/ want her to come through this breakup and murder attempts. Because the premise is pretty thin the film relies on her bombast and charm to be entertaining and she actually does accomplish this, it’s a FUN movie.

Another saving grace for the film is the fight sequences. From Harley’s takeover of the GCPD with a beanbag gun, to the final battle between the birds and Sidonis in the amusement park the action is dense, well choreographed, and entertaining. Harley and Co find lots of cool way to keep the fighting fresh. Harley’s ability to use guns as clubs is particularly fun. And its great just great to watch these five women beat the shit out of an endless parade of men in tacky tribal masks. Accompanying these fights is usually one of the BALLER tracks from the Birds of Prey album featuring an all lady line up of songs that just kick ass. I have most of them downloaded; I haven’t been this into a soundtrack since Black Panther.

So even though it’s no Parasite, there are a lot of reasons to go out and support this movie full of amazing women on a fun, if simple, joyride into gratuitous violence!

𝐢. 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 .

          born  in  a  moderately  comfortable  home  in  chicago  ,  il  ,  marcus  banks  never  really  knew  what  he  wanted  to  do  .  he  could  have  been  the  first  in  his  family  to  go  to  college  ,  especially  since  his  father  went  into  the  army  right  after  high  school  and  his  mom  worked  at  a  mac  counter  in  the  mall  to  give  herself  something  to  do  instead  of  being  a  stay  at  home  mom  .  when  he  was  in  high  school  ,  marcus  was  the  quarterback  for  his  school’s  team  ,  but  he  had  no  interest  in  playing  football  in  college  .  he  does  end  up  going  ,  and  manages  to  get  himself  into  prestigious  hbcu  morehouse  college  in  atlanta  ,  georgia  .  marcus  discovered  that  he  was  unhappy  at  morehouse  and  dropped  out  ,  so  like  most  twenty  year  olds  with  nothing  to  his  name  and  a  single  ticket  to  new  york  ,  marcus  somehow  managed  to  get  a  position  as  an  intern  at  uptown  records  .

          marcus  worked  his  way  up  from  intern  and  eventually  became  a  talent  director  ,  and  this  is  when  he  discovered  his  own  passion  for  music  as  well  as  how  exciting  it  was  to  help  develop  talent  .  while  at  uptown  records  ,  marcus  had  a  hand  in  developing  a  lot  of  the  talent  from  the  90s  ,  such  as  jodeci  and  mary  j .  blige  .  marcus’s  time  at  uptown  came  to  an  end  when  he  decided  that  he  wanted  to  start  his  own  label  ,  which  he  called  kingdom  records  .  through  those  years  ,  he  helped  to  manage  and  produce  tons  of  popular  artists  from  the  late  90s  and  early  2000s  .  although  marcus  enjoyed  his  time  as  a  producer  and  he  watched  as  his  wealth  grew  ,  he  also  knew  that  he  wanted  to  have  a  wife  and  children  .

           he  married  his  wife  ,  jada  long  ,  after  they  met  when  she  came  in  with  her  girl - group  to  become  the  next  big  trio  .  while  the  trio’s  career  didn’t  take  off  ,  jada  managed  to  find  love  with  marcus  and  they  married  after  six  months  of  dating  .  after  being  married  for  three  years  ,  they  welcomed  their  first  child  ,  a  son  named  isaiah  born  in  1993  .  in  1995  ,  jada  and  marcus  were  originally  expecting  twins  ,  but  one  of  them  absorbed  the  other  ,  so  that  explains  why  the  couple  decided  to  name  their  second  son  khaos  .  the  couple  had  one  more  child  ,  a  daughter  they  named  mariah  ,  in  1999  .  marcus  and  jada  settled  with  their  family  in  los  angeles  ,  where  their  company  expanded  and  marcus  started  his  own  music  career  .

          originally  ,  critics  were  skeptical  because  he  was  known  for  managing  and  producing  ,  not  rapping  ,  but  he  released  his  debut  album  in  2001  and  let’s  just  say  that  critics  were  floored  .  the  album  debuted  at  number  one  and  went  2x  platinum  ,  earning  him  his  first  grammy  nomination  .  marcus  continuously  released  music  throughout  the  2000s  and  even  into  the  2010s  ,  which  has  earned  him  18  grammy  wins  and  received  the  commemorative  ‘ salute  to  industry  icons  ’  in  2017  .  marcus  has  since  retired  from  music  after  touring  a  few  times  ,  and  now  mainly  cites  himself  as  a  businessman  .  he  is  the  head  of  banks  enterprises  ,  which  is  the  umbrella  com[any  for  his  restaurants  ,  fashion  line  ,  liquor  brand  ,  and  he  eventually  went  into  television  production  as  well  .

          as  for  their  son  khaos  ,  he’s  got  a  sick  case  of  middle  child  syndrome  .  while  growing  up  ,  he  always  felt  overshadowed  by  his  brother  who  went  into  the  music  industry  and  even  by  his  younger  sister  as  she  had  a  natural  talent  for  gymnastics  .  when  he  was  in  high  school  ,  khaos  played  football  because  it  made  sense  ,  but  he  wasn’t  as  passionate  about  it  as  his  father  .  football  was  never  an  interest  to  khaos  ,  and  he  never  had  an  interest  in  attending  college  for  it  either  (  sound  familiar  ?  )  he  wanted  time  to  figure  out  who  he  was  and  things  of  the  sort  ,  but  his  dad  was  a  stubborn  man  who  barely  let  him  decide  what  he  wanted  despite  the  fact  that  he  allowed  it  for  his  other  children  .  khaos  never  really  knew  how  to  tell  his  dad  that  he  didn’t  want  a  life  as  some  pro - baller  ,  so  he  started  hanging  around  the  wrong  people  .

          when  it  started  , khaos  primarily  hot - boxed  in  his  car  with  his  friends  ,  stayed  out  for  far  too  long  ,  and  occasionally  got  busted  in  the  mansions  that  were  up  for  sale  in  their  neighborhoods  .  to  him  ,  it  was  all  fun  and  games  ,  but  the  laughs  came  to  a  halt  when  his  father  picked  him  up  fueled  with  rage  and  his  mother  had  tears  in  her  eyes  because  he  was  ‘  headed  down  a  dark  path  ’  .  of  course  ,  khaos  never  took  heed  to  what  his  parents  had  to  say  about  anything  ,  so  he  continued  to  act  up  (  you  can  get  snatched  up  )  and  when  he  was  eighteen  his  parents  had  had  enough  when  he  was  placed  on  probation  for  two  and  a  half  years  for  reckless  driving  and  drag  racing  .

           the  heads  of  the  banks  household  decided  that  they  would  have  khaos  complete  his  probation  in  chicago  ,  and  was  made  to  stay  with  his  grandmother  for  the  duration  .  of  course  ,  khaos  was  mad  about  it  ,  but  he  decided  that  he  wouldn’t  stay  in  chicago  once  it  was  over  .  he  was  supposed  to  return  to  california  ,  but  somehow  managed  to  convince  his  parents  that  he’d  be  better  off  moving  to  new  york  ,  and  so  they  let  him  . 

𝐢𝐢. 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 .

now  ,  he  lives  in  new  york  and  pretends  like  he’s  the  ‘ changed ’  son  that  his  parents  want  .  in  reality  he’s  just  doing  whatever  the  hell  he  wants  because  his  parents  made  sure  that  the  media  didn’t  discover  that  he  was  going  in  and  out  of  jail  and  on  probation  for  a  period  of  time  .  he  mainly  lives  the  life  of  a  socialite  ,  taking  random  excursions  around  the  world  when  he  feels  like  it  and  popping  up  in  the  tabloids  because  he’s  having  another  club  night  escapade  .  

𝐢𝐢𝐢. 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲  .

khaos  is  pretty  much  the  epitome  of  a  spoiled  rich  boy  .  he’s  really  arrogant  ,  and  thinks  highly  of  himself  but  he’s  not  really  in  your  face  about  it  .  it  mostly  can  be  seen  in  his  aura  /  his  energy  as  he’s  not  much  of  a  talker  in  the  first  place  .  he  doesn’t  brag  or  boast  about  himself  or  his  family’s  wealth  because  well  ...  there’s  no  need  for  that  .  as  soon  as  people  hear  the  ‘ banks ’  last  name  ,  they  automatically  know  who  he  is  .

he’s  the  most  charming  man  !  he’s  really  chill  and  he  really  likes  conversation  ,  so  watch  as  he  fills  it  with  compliments  but  mainly  to  get  what  he  wants  .  if  he’d  being  honest  ,  he  gets  his  charm  from  his  father  ,  even  though  he  doesn’t  really  want  to  admit  it  ,  and  he  gets  his  incredible  sense  of  humor  from  his  mother  so  chances  are  ,  he’s  gonna  get  what  he  wants  .  

uh  ,  he’s  an  asshole  ,  too  ?  like  he  tends  to  think  he’s  not  ,  but  he  doesn’t  really  care  for  his  dad  and  borderline  would  beat  his  ass  if  he  had  the  chance  to  .  he’s  not  an  asshole  outright  where  he’s  a  standoffish  dick  face  ,  but  khaos  does  have  his  moments  where  his  temper  won’t  be  as  mellow  as  it  usually  is  .

𝐢𝐯. 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬  .

his  family  owns  a  few  houses  around  the  united  states  .  they  have  their  main  house  in  hidden  hills  ,  their  house  in  chicago  ,  two  vacation  homes  in  aspen  and  southampton  ,  and  a  more  ‘ modest ’  home  in  beverly  hills  .  khaos  lives  in  a  loft - style  duplex  condo  in  greenwich  village  .

it’s  my  dream  car (  rip  to  tesla  ig  lol )  ,  but  khaos  drives  primarily  a  porsche  taycan  .  it’s  the  main  car  he  drives  in  nyc  ,  but  back  home  in  california  he  has  a  fleet  of  cars  ranging  from  a  range  rover  ,  bentley  bentayga  ,  rolls - royce  phantom  ,  a  ferrari  548  italian  spider  ,  and  the  beautiful  bugatti  chiron  .

his  fashion  sense  is  primarily  streetwear  .  he  likes  to  dabble  into  luxury  sportswear  as  well  ,  but  mainly  sticks  to  brands  like  supreme  ,  commes  des  garcones  ,  balenciaga  ,  vetements  ,  supreme  ,  off - white  ,  alexander  wang  ,  etc  .  

this  is  so  headass  and  it  fits  his  aesthetic  lmao  ,  but  khaos  wears  a  an  eight  tooth  grill  (  both  top  and  bottom  )  every  single  day  .  ofc  he  takes  them  out  to  be  cleaned  /  brush  his  teeth  ,  but  he  never  leaves  the  house  without  them  and  they’re  valued  at  $45k  each  .

mostly  because  he’s  annoying  ,  his  favorite  thing  to  eat  is  cronuts  and  he’d  literally  fly  back  to  los  angeles  for  the  vegan  cronuts  at  donut  farm  .  that  being  said  ,  he  is  vegan  but  not  annoying  about  it  ...  at  least  i  don’t  think  he  is  lmao  .

a  feminist  !  specifically  ,  an  intersectional  feminist  and  he's  gone  to  the  women’s  march  in  nyc  every  year  since  he  made  the  official  move  ,  and  uh  ,  probably  got  arrested  during  a  peaceful  protest  when  the  ab*rtion  bill  became  a  thing  .

Pairing: Jungkook & OC

Summary & Warnings: Aspect is one of the hottest, up-and-coming bands in the world, headed up by it’s maknae and lead singer Jeon Jungkook. Aspect is on the rise but when one of it’s members abruptly quits, they are left without a bassist. When they find Leilani Kang, they’re blown away by her talent and she joins the band. I leaned back in my chair, bringing my hand up to my mouth to chew on my nails as my gaze remained on the president of the label. After that night that I offered to help Jungkook write some stuff for the album, we ended up writing five songs together. In the four weeks since then, he and I have actually been getting alone somewhat...well. He’s can actually be pretty decent when he wants to be; don’t get me wrong though, he’s still a dickhead.

Once Jungkook and I finished the songs, we managed to show them to the group, record them, and finish compiling the album. Since we as a group were satisfied with the tracks, it was time for Bang Si-hyuk to hear them.

To say that I was nervous would be a complete understatement. I mean, I’m the new person in the band and what if Bang thought that I messed up the flow of the group? Or that I wasn’t good enough to add anything to them, in a musical sense? 

Jimin, who was sitting to the left of me, must’ve noticed the look on my face because he grabbed my left hand, the one that wasn’t in my mouth, and intertwined our fingers. I glanced over at him and gave him a small tight lipped smile. Suddenly, the music stopped playing and I looked back at Bang, who had just pressed stop on the stereo in the room. He leaned back in his chair, bringing his hand up to stroke thoughtfully at his chin. 

“So, what do you think?” Hobi wondered hesitantly and Bang looked at him before a smile took over his features.

“I think you guys have another number 1 album on your hands,” he announced and we all let out audible breaths of air as we started to celebrate. “Alright, alright, calm down you all,” he hummed and we all quieted down. “So, you guys know that I make it a point to never intrude on inner group politics, especially when it comes to the removal or addition of new members.”

Oh god, here it comes. He’s probably gonna tell them what a mistake it was to add me to the group. I don’t know made me think I could do this in the first place.

“But you guys made the best decision ever when you decided to add Leilani here to the group,” he finished, and my eyes widened. 

“Really?” I questioned. “You think so?” 

“Absolutely,” he nodded, smiling widely now. “Those riffs of yours, mixed with JK’s vocals,” he sighed dreamily. “Plus, I know that Yoongi composed most of the songs but a little birdie told me that you and JK also composed some songs.”

“Yeah,” Jungkook confirmed. “Frustrated, Focus, Could’ve been, Pillowtalk and Truth.”

“Hm, interesting,” he simpered. “Well, we can talk definite release dates another time but I do want us to get this out as soon as we possibly can. Namjoon, me and you will need to meet along with the board to discuss single selection.”

“Uh actually,” Jungkook spoke up and Bang looked over at him. “We were kind of discussing this already and we think the single should be Pillowtalk.”

“Pillowtalk?” Bang repeated. He thought for a minute before looking over at Namjoon. “Namjoon, what do you think?”

“I agree,” Namjoon answered. “It’s definitely different from the last album but not too different that it’ll alienate long time fans. Plus, we all love it.”

“Hm, I do too,” he admitted, making me grin. “Alright, Pillowtalk will be the single as long as the board agrees after listening to the album.” He then stood up and we all did the same, bowing to him and exchanging goodbyes before he walked out of the room. 

“Fuck, we did it!” Jungkook yelled and we all erupted into cheers. I gave a tight hug to Jimin and also a hug to Jin, Hobi, and Namjoon. When I got to Jungkook, he smirked cheekily at me.

“I guess we don’t make such a bad team after all, huh Leilani?” He commented, holding his arms out for a hug. To everyone’s surprise, including Jungkook’s I think, I wrapped my arms around his neck as I molded my body to his. Hesitantly, I felt his arms wrap around my waist and squeeze me lightly. 

“I guess not,” I agreed before pulling away from him.

“Hey, why don’t we go out tonight and celebrate?” Hobi suggested, making us all look over at him. “I feel like dancing.”

“I’m all for that,” Jimin agreed as he did a little dance where he was standing. 

“Oh, we should call Yoongi hyung too,” Namjoon added. The guys all started to make the plans as Jungkook looked over at me with that smirk on his face.

“You down?” He wondered, licking his lips afterwards. I bit my lip at the sight before nodding my head.

“Hell yeah.”

I have no idea how the fuck it happened, especially since we didn’t chose a club to go to until 30 minutes before we got there. However, when we stepped foot inside of the Avalon, people immediately began to flock to us. We were whisked away to the VIP section, where we had a large booth to ourselves and copious amounts of booze. 

“Wow,” I breathed as I watched Jin pour me a drink. 

“Crazy right?” He asked and I nodded slowly. He finished pouring my drink and then handed it to me, smiling lightly. “You’ll get used to it eventually,” he promised.

“Thanks,” I smiled before taking slow sips from the glass. Jimin and Hobi came back to our section, both of them starting to sweat lightly from dancing. 

“Did the shots we ordered get here yet?” Hobi asked. 

“You two felt the need to order shots? On top of all this alcohol that we have here?” Yoongi questioned. 

“Hyung, there’s no such thing as too much alcohol,” Jimin giggled as he flung himself down inside of the booth next to Yoongi, throwing his arm around his shoulder. 

“Speak for yourself,” Yoongi grumbled as he shrugged Jimin’s arm off of him. “I’ll still never understand how someone so small can drink so much and not be super fucked up.”

“It’s called skills hyung,” Jimin gushed. 

“Oh, here they are!” Hobi shrieked, making me, Jin, and Namjoon cringe. A waitress carried a tray full of different colored shots over and set them on our table and Jungkook handed her a $50 bill as a tip. 

“Baller, shot caller huh?” I teased, and Jungkook smirked. 

“Eh, I like to help out,” he shrugged. We all grabbed a shot and after a sniff of it, I realized it was tequila. We all stood up and held our glasses together.

“A toast to us, for making a bad ass team,” Jungkook boasted. We all cheered in agreement and clinked our glasses together. I brought mines to my lips, tilting my head back and swallowing it as quickly as I could. 

“Come on Lani, let’s go dance!” Jimin begged, grabbing my wrist and pulling on my arm lightly.

“Alright, alright,” I chuckled. “Gimme a minute.” He nodded and watched as I grabbed another shot from the tray, this time whiskey, and slammed that one back as well. As soon as I set the empty glass back down, Jimin whisked me away and out towards the dance floor with Hobi following close behind us.

Once we got to the middle of the dance floor, Borderline by Ariana Grande was playing and the feel good beat caused me to instantly start moving my hips. Jimin and Hobi sandwiched me, with Jimin in front of me and Hobi behind me. Honestly, with the way that Hobi and Jimin can move those hips of theirs, it’s almost a shame that him and Jimin didn’t become dancers. 

We continued to dance through two more songs all together before Earned It by The Weeknd came on. Hobi and Jimin immediately got grabbed by two random girls and even though Jimin didn’t want to leave me on my own, I told him it was ok.

“You sure Lani?” He yelled. 

“Go ahead, have fun,” I nodded, shooing him away. He gave me one last smile before letting the girl who was hanging onto his arm lead him away. I was about to make my way back to our private section when I felt a pair of hands settle on my waist.

“What the?” I was about to turn around when I felt his grip tighten on my hips.

“It’s me,” Jungkook whispered in my ear, his breath fanning across my neck. 

“What are you doing?” I asked haltingly, slightly relaxing into his chest. 

“You danced with Hobi and Jimin and I have to admit, I’m a little jealous,” he teased, making me roll my eyes.

“Seriously Jungkook,” I chuckled.

“I just want a dance,” he said as I felt him shrug his shoulders. “Think you can do that?” He murmured and I could almost feel his lips against the shell of my ear, that’s how close he was. I nodded and he lopped his arms across my stomach, guiding me as he started to rock back and forth. 

I leaned my head back, letting it rest in the crook between his neck and shoulder. I think it might’ve been the alcohol but feeling Jungkook’s strong chest against my back sent a shiver through my body. Feeling a little more comfortable, I began to swivel my hips slowly, brushing against the front of his black jeans each time I did so.

“Mm,” he groaned, his arms moving from my stomach as he used one hand to grasp my hip again, while the other settled on my thigh. Hearing his groan in my ear only spurred me on more and I made sure each time I brushed up against it, I’d press my ass against him a little harder.

“Lani,” he whispered and I hummed in response. His hand that was on my thigh started to creep upwards and I had no issues with it, until he cupped me underneath the skirt that I had on. Feeling his hand there, it’s like the cloud broke and I grabbed his arms, pushing them away from me as I moved away from his body at the same time. I turned around and looked at him, the both of us breathing heavily as I tried to process what happened. 

I quickly turned around and began to push my way through the crowd of people, wanting to get as far away from Jungkook as possible. Once I made it off of the dance floor, I paced down the hallway to the ladies room and walked inside. I walked over to the sink and grabbed a paper towel, turning on the cold water and dampening it. I then took the wet paper towel and wiped over each of my wrists a few times before setting it on my neck, hoping that it would cool me down a little.

What the fuck is wrong with me? Just because Jungkook and I are somewhat getting along now does not mean that I should fuck him. At least, that’s what the rational part of me says. Every other part though, including my vagina, is currently fucking screaming at me for being an idiot and pushing him away. 

A loud slam of the bathroom door makes me open my eyes and when I look into the mirror in front of me, the eyes that I meet are Jungkook’s. I quickly drop the paper towel in the sink and turn around to look at him.

“Jungkook, what are you doing?” I questioned, my breath becoming labored as I watched him lock the door. 

“You ran away from me Lelani and I know it’s because you’re trying to be smart,” he began as he stalked over to me. Once he got about an arm’s length away from me, I began to back away until my butt hit the sink behind me. Jungkook continued to come closer until his chest was touching mines and his hands were on the edge of the sink behind me, effectively trapping me in front of him.

“You want to, don’t you?” He asked and I tilted my head back, trying to create some space between us.

“Want to what? I don’t know what you’re talking about Jungkook,” I tried to make up an excuse but he clearly saw right through it because I heard him suck his teeth.

“You do too,” he countered back. ”You want to fuck me, don’t you?” He clarified and I inhaled sharply. His fingers griped my chin and pulled downwards, making me bring my head down and look at him again. “You do, right?”

I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of saying yes but I also knew that if I said no, he’d see right through that. That left me with one option: to shrug childishly which is what I did. He chuckled deeply and brought his hands up, cupping my face.

“Well, I want to fuck you,” he confessed and my eyes widened. “I’d love to fuck you, if you let me.” 

Oh, fuck it.

I smashed my lips against his, throwing my arms around his neck as I kissed him passionately. Despite my aggressiveness, he never missed a beat as he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer. I don’t know what I expected but he’s a damn good kisser. Like, really good.

I gasped in surprise as he lifted me up and set me on the edge of the sink, all without removing his lips from mine. I parted my legs and he stood in between them, his hands settling on my breasts through the front of my top. He eventually moved from my lips and trailed kisses down the side of my jaw to my neck, where he began to suck harshly.

“Fuck,” I gasped, tilting my head to give him better access. He trailed one hand down and settled it underneath my skirt before pulling away from my neck to look at me.

“Is this ok? You ran from me the last time I did this,” he breathed out, panting slightly. I nodded and set my hands in the hair at the nape of his neck.

“Please,” I said and that’s all it took before he was suckling on my neck again. His hand that was under my skirt moved up and I felt his finger lightly rubbing up and down the outside of my panties. 

“Jungkook, please,” I pleaded, wanting him to touch my bare skin and not through a barrier. He chuckled deeply as he pressed his fingers against my clit. 

“Greedy,” he tutted but nonetheless, he pulled my panties to the side and slipped his pointer finger inside of me. I shuddered in pleasure, pawing at his back.

“Fuck yes,” I purred as he began to pump his finger in and out. 

“I knew it was only a matter of time,” he murmured, licking a stripe up the length of my neck. “They always come running to get fucked eventually.” I immediately opened my eyes and set my hands on his shoulders, pushing him back with all of the strength that I could muster. He stumbled back, barely stopping himself from falling to the ground.

“What the fuck Leilani?” He chided as I hopped down off of the sink and readjusted my clothing.

“Is that what you think I am? Just another piece of ass?” I accused, glaring at him. 

“I didn’t mean it like that,” he tried to say but I held my hand up, stopping him. 

“You did and it’s ok. I’m happy you said it before I actually let you fuck me,” I snapped before pushing past him and walking over to the door, unlocking it before storming out of the bathroom.

1. I Forgot That You Existed: A certified bop. My mum loves this one too. Really sets the tone for the album and the production absolutely SLAPS. Pls have this on set list. Best lyric: "In my feelings more than Drake, so yeah." 8/10

2. Cruel Summer: Everyone loves this song including me. Was my initial favourite. Chorus and bridge are probably two of the best moments on the album it's so good and catchy. Best lyric: "I love you, ain't that the worst thing you've ever heard?" 10/10

3. Lover: My favourite single by a mile!! This song warms my heart and is literally top 3 I stan it so hard. Will probably be my wedding song. Fave lyric: All of it, it's PEAK softness 13/10

4. The Man: I like it and the message is good but it's not my favourite? Idk it's amazing but I stan the rest of the album too hard oops. Fave lyric: "I'd be a bitch not a baller." 7/10

12. Soon You'll Get Better: This is such a sad song that I actually can't listen to it in public bc I cry. I've been through something similar and boi this had me sobbing at 6am on first listen. 13. False God: WOW I love this song. I love a good horn section and this is IT chief. This is sexy and soft and I just love it honestly it's so underated even though it's god ;) tier. Unbounded Lands postmortem

 this takes a kind of circuitous path and gets heavy fast.

The fall before I started Teratoscope, my brother and I were in a car accident.

The morning of, I made a stupid turn that put a headlight out of commission and mangled the fender pretty badly. It was the first time I’d ever really fucked up a vehicle. Every forty-five seconds or so the car would make this brief scraping noise. I had a good three-hour drive ahead of me that would take me through St. Louis and, I would quickly discover, a torrential rainstorm. Stupidly, I pressed on anyway. I had to pay rent that day. I was full of miserable thoughts about how much it was going to cost me to get the headlight replaced and the body work done, about what might happen if I crossed paths with a cop, you get the idea. I had this recurring imp-of-the-perverse notion that if the car got utterly trashed at least I wouldn’t have to worry about getting the damn thing fixed.

Because I was eager to put a long convoy of semis behind me, I spent a lot of time in the left lane and above the speed limit—way too far above for the amount of water on the asphalt and the crap visibility. Eventually, I got to thinking I was clear on the right; anxious to get back to a reasonable speed, I started to change lanes.

There was somebody coming out of my blind spot; I caught them coming and started to course-correct. We were on a pretty dramatic curve in the highway, or coming up on it, on approach to an overpass.  I started hydroplaning. I panicked, not remembering how to stabilize, and the car spun out.

I don’t have a great sensory recollection of what happened next, but this is what the bystanders saw. The car threaded the needle between two semis, tore through a good ten feet of highway railing and a lamppost (just barely clearing the concrete nub it was bolted to), and ground to a halt after slamming into the hill the overpass was built into. It was sitting mostly on its side, with bits of hill stuck in it.

My brother and I were completely unharmed, aside from some unpleasant bruises.

What I remember from the accident is the sudden, overwhelming loss of control, the terrible lurch I felt as everything outside the car blurred together into an unintelligible slurry, and then the smell of gunsmoke and my hands clawing in horror at this vast volume of gray, thinking this is what death is like, then.

It was the airbag.

These are things that snuck up on me in bed and in the shower for many months afterward. I don’t get the flashbacks anymore, but when I’m not distracting myself with work or stories I’m susceptible to this visceral awareness of my presence as a body in time. I can feel myself hurtling through the fourth dimension, and it feels a lot like being in that car.

It forces me to reckon with big questions about death and consciousness and embodiment. Which is what got me thinking very seriously about sizes of infinity and negative spaces—not just in space but in time and possibility.

I don’t think I started Teratoscope as a way of coping with my trauma and the existential challenges it forced me to acknowledge, but looking back on Unbounded Lands it’s hard to ignore that they’re in there. The Unbounded Lands are, to an extent, a vision of the world as riddled through with existential anxieties as I am. It’s a place with negative possibility space bleeding into it, with multiple ambiguous pasts and futures looping back around into the now and forcing it to confront the moral exhaustion of perpetual being.

I don’t think I’ve fully reckoned with this stuff. That DNA’s carried over to Freestar One; if anything it’s only going to get more so in the next series.

On a lighter note, design!

I did a lot of wavering back and forth about damage and lethality; it’s something I’ve struggled with designing monsters before, partly because I’m lethally allergic to “strategic balance.” Challenge Rating as a concept can eat my whole ass. Generally speaking I think of D&D as in large part a horror game, and so I tend to lean towards lethal critters, but as wary as I am of turning into a 4e-style fight clockmaker, I’m equally concerned about the “Killer DM” rep that so much OSR design carries with it. This is definitely still a problem I’m wrestling with—I think the root of it is that, much as I love the mode of tabletop these critters are for, I don’t get to play it much with the regular group I’ve got. We’re more of a storygames crowd in practice.

Something I mostly tried to avoid while writing Unbounded Lands was giving critters “spell-like abilities.” Something I fucking loathe about later editions of D&D is the way it sucks the mystique out of its own design by making the bulk of its game effects modular. Now, there have always been monsters with spell lists in D&D, but I think it’s gotten progressively more egregious with each subsequent edition. A lot of the problem has to do with feature bloat and the need to turn away from the monster stat block to look something up; in my opinion a tabletop game should be designed such that one needs to do as little cross-referencing as humanly possible. On a related note, whoever came up with giving monster writeups long lists of feats should be caned.

That being said, I should note I’ve broken my own rule a couple of times in Unbounded Lands—the Catalyst Sprite and Slinn are both pretty clear examples of this kind of design. I’ll admit they were ideas I liked, but didn’t have elegant mechanics in mind for them at the time. I’ll likely revisit them in one form or another one day, once I’ve built up a sufficient stock of critters that no longer appeal to me as they did when I first conceived of them. Like a “Misfit Monsters Revisited,” but, you know, for a system I find bearable.

Finally, I figure it pays to rattle off a bit of an “appendix N” for Teratoscope—readings and extracurriculars that played an inspirational role in developing the setting:

any of China Mieville’s Bas-Lag novels. Mieville’s a fucking legend when it comes to whipping up critters; Iron Council is the overall best of the three. Also, his essays and lectures on variations upon the uncanny are absolute must-reads for any teratologist.

A Storm of Wings by M. John Harrison. The Unbounded Lands are a bottomless time abyss, not dying by degrees like Harrison’s future-Earth, but the ontological crisis/alien invasion that forms the central plot of the second Viriconium novella is a very appropriate sort of horrible thing to happen there. As a side note, I would kill for a game with Soulsborne-inspired gameplay and Viriconium’s genre sensibilities.

Fire on the Velvet Horizon. My most direct inspiration for writing a monster manual, period. My resolution at the start of Teratoscope was that if I could create critters half as fucking baller as Patrick Stuart’s and then bolt some pretty serviceable mechanics to them, I’d have succeeded.

the artwork of Alexander Kostetsky. There’s a lot of art references I could drop in for Unbounded Lands, but Kostetsky marries the ludicrous scale, kaleidoscopic palette, and feverish organic form that I think is integral to the setting to this sense of bleakness, patience, silence, openness. Which is a fucking challenge, and also suits Unbounded Lands quite well. The barren stretches of Manmonumeq and sunken spires of Old Hyrkonia are his.

YT//ST - Yamantaka Sonic Titan. My brother once summarized this album’s sound as “being sung at by a sea witch and her army of clothes dryers with bricks thrown in them.” He’s not wrong. It slaps. Put on Crystal Fortress over the Sea of Trees and go fight the Hecatoncheiropolis.

1. raindrops(an angel cried)

Thoughts: okay this was a really beautiful track and I enjoyed it. The raw acoustics and the tone of the voice was absolutely beautiful. I love that echoey sound in the background and it sounded like she was really vulnerable. This was really beautiful. I’m hoping Ariana releases a longer version of this

Thoughts: This song is a shock to me. The transition from raindrops to this is a splendid surprise. Now for the track overall I didn’t really enjoy it particularly. This would be the song I’d listen to just for ariana’s voice. Like she picked up this song and I feel like the music at the back was really tacky and I didn’t dig it. They both did a good job.

Thoughts: This song was a banger. I enjoyed it’s like one of my favourites because Nicki’s opening hook in the song is bomb, she was the best pick for this part. I didn’t really get a lot of vocals from Ariana because she was talking through her part but I really enjoyed it. I would change how Ariana sings it and maybe dampen the political voice at the back

4. R.E.M

Thoughts: It really transitioned from the light is coming fast! The beat at the back is really nice and could probably put someone to sleep. We get more vocals from Ariana in this track and she really shows a softer side to the album in this song and it’s really nice. I dig the harmonies and it’s just really well put together she really outdid herself on this track. This track is beautiful. It has a sitting on clouds kind of vibe

5. god is a woman

Thoughts: The first time I listened to this song. I was astonished. It was so beautiful. Like I was a bit skeptic all about listening to it because I’m Christian and I thought it would contradict my culture but it did anything but that. It actually opened my eyes. Her vocal are beautiful, the beat is gorgeous, and you can tell she really tried hard for this one. I loved it. Ariana really knows how to wow people. The video too was moving with so many older art references. Just a work of art

Thoughts: i was really looking forward to this track. And I listened to it in shock. Like MISS ARIANA GRANDE. It was so fucking good. This is really different from her other songs. And I like that she was trying new things. Because she is capable of a lot of things and I think this just opened the door to new possibilities. I didn’t know that she could do this. Most definitely deserves to be a title track. It was beautiful and I enjoyed it so much she really did so well with this. I will definitely be twisting to this for a while. good fucking job. It’s beautiful

This song isn’t the best but I like the meaning of it.

I wouldn’t give this over 3 stars because the production was really weird. But this is my opinion. You guys may still like it

I live this song and she showed her emotions really well. This should really be longer

Thoughts: Okay last song on this album. I really resonated with this song. It felt like she was asking the listeners if she was sane or even normal. She was talking about how her life was controlled and she just wanted to do this song for the Manchester Attack. imagine how much ptsd she has from the attack and her being scared that it will happen again. She really related with her listeners in this song. And I know that is said she showed herself in some songs on this album but this is the big kahuna. She really opened up not just about her feelings but what was on her mind and she showed anxiety in this song I don’t know. And the 44second of silence to commorate those who died from the attack really shows us what Ariana is aiming to be and how there is truly a new her revealing from this album.

How Far We've Come - You cannot say this isn't a Homestuck song. It was made like right after Cascade dropped back in 2011, and the OP actually UPDATED it for the end of Homestuck. If I'm not mistaken, this AMV started the trend of putting series finales to this song! Ever since I've seen one for Gravity Falls, and Steve Universe among others. It's just. Iconic. Imagine: You and G finally think you have it all. The fame. The fortune. The relationship. The Passion. It should all be ok right?

“Babe? Baby? G. Young Gerald? Gerald! ATTENTION G-EAZY!” He finally snaps up from his computer to give you an annoying side eye that he only gives you when you call him by every name he has.

“Eww gross! Don't give me that look,” you snap at him playfully causing him to smirk. Oh that infamous smirk. It sends girls into a tizzy and makes your heart skip two beats every time he flashes it in your direction.

“Yes Baby Girl?”

“Eww don’t call me that either.” You said this half jokingly only because Baby Girl was the term he used for any girl that he either didn’t know their name or didn’t care to use it. It was his way of being charming but it really grinded your gears when he called you it. He knew this; but of course, he had to say it only because he loved how it got you pissed.

“Sorry, Doll Baby,” he said with that same smirk as always, but adding a lip bite to drive you absolutely mad with desire.

“That’s more like it Babe. Now I need to know how many people you invited over so I can figure out if I should cook or call a caterer.” You were planning an album release party for the new stuff G was putting out. He still didn’t know when he was releasing it but hopefully by Friday night he could get it together.

“I don’t know Doll like a fuck ton I guess?”

“A fuck ton haha. How are we supposed to fit a fuck ton in the backyard? L.A backyards aren’t that big.”

“Challenge accepted! We will have a fuck ton and see how many can fit! And if the neighbors try and call the cops then..”

“They’re bitches and got you Fucked Up?!” You say coyly as you roll your eyes at the beautiful handsome man you grew to love.

 It was never supposed to happen between you two. He was this big time rapper and you a ghost writer that didn’t care about all that. You prided yourself on being an indy hippie with a gangster mind so the glitz and the glamour was very off putting for you. He loved the stuff you wrote and insisted on meeting you. You politely rejected him and his team more than a few times until one day he popped up unannounced at a studio session you had with Keisha Cole. She had needed help for a song that she had in mind showing love for the Bay Area, and who walked in not even 15 minutes into the session? Mr. Bay Area himself. She introduced you two and he, being the asshole that he is, started in on you. 

“So this is the chick that won’t work with me huh? ˙Her little hippie self doesn't feel up to par with the Big Ballers, Ey Baby Girl?” You had told him not to call you that even then and kindly explained to him how if you wanted to work with a greasy haired, love for booze and women, playboy then you would have gotten into contacts with Bieber. You had also added in how you liked to leave a message in your writing for the greater good, and not just talk about hoes and needing that Henny. He respected your wit and insults, bugged you for your number and texted you non-stop. It eventually got to the point where he found you at a LA club with your friends, dancing with some guy to his music, and he stole you away. He literally stole you away, it was actually more like kidnapping. You had wound up in his car, on the way to his house. You were drunk and couldn’t keep you hands off of him so you wound up having a little sleep over and the rest is history.

“Yes they’d have me fucked up!” His response broke your momentary flashback.

 “Fine then haha I’ll just have to call a caterer and have them prepare a fuck ton of food. Or we could just have a taco man, In-N-Out truck, Pink’s Hot dogs and buy a whole lot of Booze and Jarritos?”

“Definitely plan number two! Just remember extra booze and maybe some bud. This is why I fucking love you! You know me so damn well, you’d have all my favorites for something so special to me.” He bent down and pecked your lips, and just as you were about to walk away to make the preparations, he pulls you back and kisses you deep. You give him the satisfaction, and allow him to deepen the kiss only to pull away from him just as it was on the cusp of getting good.

“Hey!” “What?”

“Why’d you pull away?”

“That’s what you get for not answering me ya dick!” He put his hand over his heart and acted shocked. His shock then turned into that damn smirk and he ran right at you.

“Come here you little shit!” You squealed cutely and ran up the stairs having G hot on you ass!
